Abstract
Older adults who experience cognitive decline are more likely to have a reduced quality of life. Identifying lifestyle factors that may influence cognitive processing and in turn improve quality of life during older adulthood is an important area of interest. Cognitive function, as measured by the P300 event-related potential (ERP), has been noted to be modified by physical activity; however, no study to date has examined relationships between this neurophysiological measure and physical activity and sedentary time in older adults. Furthermore, there is a gap in understanding as to whether physical activity and sedentary time assessed using self-reported and accelerometer-based methods similarly relate to the P300. This study aimed to assess the P300 during a Go/No-Go task in relation to self-reported and accelerometer-based physical activity and sedentary time in a community sample of 75 older adults. Results indicated that participants engaging in more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity had larger P300 amplitudes across self-reported and accelerometer-based measurements; however, no relationships between sedentary time and P300 amplitude were observed. Notably, accelerometer-based moderate-to-vigorous physical activity explained P300 amplitudes over and above self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity-an effect that remained significant even after accounting for age. Although these results highlight the importance of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in relation to cognitive function, as measured via the P300 in older adults, a secondary analysis indicated that engaging in lifestyle activity may have similar effects on the P300 as moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. In sum, the present study highlights the role of habitual engagement in physical activity as a possible means for supporting cognitive function during the aging process.

Abstract
Purpose One's amount, intensity, and distribution of physical activity may have implications for whether it has positive or negative effects on pain and quality of life for older adults living with chronic pain. Thus, we investigated baseline patterns of stepping related to pain symptoms and health-related quality of life at baseline and over a 12-week follow-up period. Patients and Methods Participants were low-active older adults (69.54±6.74 years) with obesity and chronic pain who enrolled in one of two randomized controlled trials. Participants completed measures of pain intensity, interference, and health-related quality of life and wore an accelerometer for 7 days at baseline and week 12. Functional principal components analysis identified patterns of within-day stepping behavior at baseline, and linear regressions were used to investigate how these component scores related to pain and health-related quality of life at baseline and over 12 weeks. Results Two patterns were extracted; one describing more vs less stepping and the second capturing movement later vs earlier in the day. More baseline stepping was associated with better physical functioning (B=0.148, p<0.001) and energy (B=0.073, p=0.033), while a later start in the day was associated with worse social functioning (B=-0.193, p=0.031). More stepping at baseline predicted positive changes in physical functioning (B=0.094, p=0.019), emotional role limitations (B=0.132, p=0.049), energy (B=0.112, p<0.001), social functioning (B=0.086, p=0.043), pain (B=0.086, p=0.009), general health (B=0.081, p=0.003) and pain intensity (B=-0.039, p=0.003). A later start to the day was associated with worsening physical functioning (B=-0.229, p<0.001), physical (B=-0.282, p=0.047) and emotional role limitations (B=-0.254, p=0.048), general health (B=-0.108, p=0.041), and pain interference (B=0.055, p=0.043). Conclusion Findings suggest there is value in activity patterns as an indicator for additional behavioral intervention, as those who move little and/or delay daily movement are likely to experience subsequent decrements in quality of life and pain symptoms.

Abstract
Background: Clinical management of chronic pain often includes recommendations to engage in physical activity (PA), though there are little data on the interplay between pain symptoms and key aspects of PA participation (e.g., intensity and bout duration) among older adults. Herein we investigate the longitudinal relationships between changes in PA behavior and changes in pain intensity and interference among low-active older adults with obesity and chronic pain. Methods: Participants (N = 41) were enrolled in two randomized pilot trials wherein they were assigned to an intervention focused on participation in frequent PA across the day, or to a low-contact control. Participants completed the 3-item PROMIS pain intensity scale and 8-item PROMIS pain interference scale before and after the interventions. Participants also wore an ActivPAL accelerometer for 7 days before and during the final week of the interventions. Results: A series of linear regression analyses demonstrated that increased time spent stepping at a high-light intensity in very short bouts was associated with increased pain intensity scores. By contrast, increased time spent stepping at a high-light intensity in bouts of 5-20 min was associated with reductions in pain intensity and interference scores. Increased time spent stepping at a moderate intensity overall was associated with reduced pain intensity scores, and time spent stepping at a moderate intensity for 10-20 min associated with reduced pain interference. Conclusion: These findings suggest older adults with chronic pain may benefit by moving at high-light or moderate intensities in brief bouts of at least 5 min in duration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low in-hospital mobility is widely acknowledged as a major risk factor in acquiring hospital-associated disabilities. Various predictors of in-hospital low mobility have been suggested, among them older age, disabling admission diagnosis, poor cognitive and physical functioning, and pre-hospitalization mobility. However, the universalism of the phenomena is not well studied, as similar risk factors to low in-hospital mobility have not been tested. METHODS The study was a secondary analysis of data on in-hospital mobility that investigated the relationship between in-hospital mobility and a set of similar risk factors in independently mobile prior to hospitalization older adults, hospitalized in acute care settings in Israel (N = 206) and Denmark (N = 113). In Israel, mobility was measured via ActiGraph GT9X and in Denmark by ActivPal3 for up to seven hospital days. RESULTS Parallel multivariate analyses revealed that a higher level of community mobility prior to hospitalization and higher mobility ability status on admission were common predictors of a higher number of in-hospital steps, whereas the longer length of hospital stay was significantly correlated with a lower number of steps in both samples. The risk of malnutrition on admission was associated with a lower number of steps, but only in the Israeli sample. CONCLUSIONS Despite different assessment methods, older adults' low in-hospital mobility has similar risk factors in Israel and Denmark. Pre-hospitalization and admission mobility ability are robust and constant risk factors across the two studies. This information can encourage the development of both international standard risk evaluations and tailored country-based approaches.

The effects of a real-life lifestyle program on physical activity and objective and subjective sleep in adults aged 55+ years. BMC Public Health 2022; 22:353. Abstract
Study objectives Age related changes in sleep result in an increasing prevalence of poor sleep in mid-aged and older adults. Although physical activity has shown to benefit sleep in studies in controlled settings, this has not yet been examined in a real-life lifestyle program. The aims of this study were to: 1) examine the effects of a lifestyle program on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and objective and subjective sleep in adults aged 55+ years; and 2) examine if the effects differed between good and poor sleepers. Methods This controlled pretest-posttest trial examined the effects of the 12-week group-based real-life lifestyle program ‘Lekker Actief’ on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (measured using accelerometers) and sleep (measured using accelerometers and the Pittsburgh Sleep quality Index, PSQI). The main component of the program was a 12-week progressive walking program, complemented by an optional muscle strengthening program and one educational session on healthy nutrition. Of the 451 participants who were tested pre-intervention, 357 participants completed the posttest assessment (200 in the intervention group and 157 in the control group). Effects on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and on objective sleep (sleep efficiency, total sleep time, wake time after sleep onset (WASO) and number of awakenings) as well as subjective sleep (sleep quality) were examined in crude and in adjusted multiple regression models. An interaction term between program (control versus intervention) and sleep category (good and poor) was included in all models. Results Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels significantly increased in the intervention group compared with the control group (43,02 min per day; 95%CI: 12.83–73.22; fully adjusted model). The interaction terms revealed no differences between good and poor sleepers regarding the effect of the intervention on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. There were no significant effects on sleep, except for good sleepers who showed an increase in number of awakenings/night by 1.44 (CI 95% 0.49; 2.24). Conclusions Although this program was effective in increasing physical activity, it did not improve sleep. Lifestyle programs should be promoted to increase physical activity, but more is needed to improve sleep as well. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (Trial registration NCT03576209).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gradual disengagement from daily physical activity (PA) could signal present or emerging mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE This study examined whether accelerometry-derived patterns of everyday movement differ by cognitive diagnosis in participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA). METHODS Activity patterns, overall and by time-of-day, were cross-sectionally compared between participants with adjudicated normal cognition (n = 549) and MCI/AD diagnoses (n = 36; 5 participants [14%] living with AD) using covariate-adjusted regression models. RESULTS Compared to those with normal cognition, those with MCI/AD had 2.1% higher activity fragmentation (SE = 1.0%, p = 0.036) but similar mean total activity counts/day (p = 0.075) and minutes/day spent active (p = 0.174). Time-of-day analyses show MCI/AD participants had lower activity counts and minutes spent active during waking hours (6:00 am-5:59 pm; p < 0.01 for all). Also, they had lower activity fragmentation from 12:00-5:59 am (p < 0.001), but higher fragmentation from 12:00-5:59 pm (p = 0.026). CONCLUSION Differences in the timing and patterns of physical activity throughout the day linked to MCI/AD diagnoses warrant further investigation into potential clinical utility.
