Abstract
Research on the potential association between life-ever gallstones and depressive symptoms is limited. This study aims to evaluate whether the presence of gallstone disease is associated with depressive symptoms. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-March 2020 cycles. The presence of depressive symptoms and gallstone disease was assessed using questionnaire responses. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were calculated using a multivariate logistic regression model, with adjustments made for age, sex, race, body mass index, history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arthritis, and pulmonary disease across different models. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure the stability of the results. This study included 6201 adults aged 20 years and above, with 539(8.7%) experiencing depressive symptoms. After adjusting for age, sex, race, body mass index, CVD history, hypertension, arthritis, pulmonary disease, depressive symptoms were possibly associated with life-ever gallstones (OR 1.37, 95% CI 0.91-2.08).When depressive symptoms were categorized as mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe,life-ever gallstones was possibly associated with mild depressive symptoms (OR 1.12, 95% CI 0.81-1.56), moderate depressive symptoms (OR 1.37, 95% CI 0.89-2.12), moderately severe depressive symptoms (OR 1.93, 95% CI 0.93-3.99), and severe depressive symptoms (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.16-2.88).As a continuous variable, life-ever gallstones was associated with the PHQ-9 score (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.02-0.83). The results remained stable after multiple imputation for all missing data. This cross-sectional study demonstrates no significant association between life-ever gallstones and depressive symptoms in US adults.

Abstract
The association between live microbe intake and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women remains unknown. The research findings indicated that an increased intake of live microbes through dietary sources was associated with a low prevalence of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. PURPOSE To investigate the relationship between the consumption of live microbes in the diet and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. METHODS A cross-sectional investigation using data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was conducted. Participants were classified into three groups by using the dietary live microbe classification system developed by Sanders. Dual x-ray absorptiometry was used to measure body mineral density, and osteoporosis was diagnosed according to the World Health Organization criteria. We conducted a crude and adjusted multivariate logistic regression analysis, and utilized the restricted cubic splines model to assess the correlation between the consumption of live microbes in the diet and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. RESULTS A total of 1378 women who had undergone menopause were enrolled in the study. After controlling for potential covariates, individuals with a high consumption of live microbes in their diet exhibited a notably low prevalence of osteoporosis in comparison to those with a low intake of dietary live microbes (odd ratio: 0.46, 95% confidence interval: 0.23, 0.93, P = 0.03). Subgroup analysis showed the stability of the results, and restricted cubic splines showed an approximate L-shape curve. CONCLUSIONS In this research, a higher consumption of live microbes in the diet was linked to a low prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the potential association between dietary live microbe intake and sarcopenia. METHODS Data from 5368 participants were gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Dietary information was assessed using a self-report questionnaire. The participants were categorized into low, medium, and high dietary live microbe groups. Sarcopenia was defined according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) definition (appendicular skeletal muscle mass/body mass index <0.789 for men and <0.512 for women). Multivariate regression analysis and stratified analyses were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, individuals in the high dietary live microbe group exhibited a lower prevalence of sarcopenia compared to those in the low dietary live microbe group. The adjusted odds ratio (with 95% confidence intervals) was 0.63 (0.44-0.89) (p for trend <0.05). Subgroup analyses indicated a potential difference in the impact of dietary live microbe intake on sarcopenia between individuals with and without diabetes (p for interaction = 0.094). CONCLUSION Higher dietary live microbe intake was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES 'Super-agers,' individuals over 80 with memory abilities comparable to those 20-30 years younger. The relationship between super-agers and dietary acid load (DAL) is an area that warrants further investigation. We aim to examine the link between DAL and super-agers and assess DAL's effects on cognitive functions across different age groups and cognitive domains. DESIGN Employing a cross-sectional analysis of the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, we utilized propensity score analysis and multivariate-adjusted regression to mitigate confounding factors. SETTING Older adults aged 60 and above in the United States. PARTICIPANTS Our primary analysis encompassed 985 older adults, supplemented by a sensitivity analysis with 2,522 participants. MEASUREMENTS DAL was assessed through potential renal acid load (PRAL), estimated net acid excretion (NAEes), and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) indices. RESULTS Super-agers demonstrate a preference for alkaline diets, shown by their lower DAL indices. After inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), multivariate-adjusted logistic regression reveals that each unit reduction in NAEes and PRAL increases the chances of being a super-ager by 3.9% and 3.0%, respectively. The DAL's impact on cognitive function becomes more pronounced with age. Lower PRAL and NAEes scores are significantly linked to higher situational memory and overall cognitive performance scores in those over 70, with these effects being even more pronounced in participants over 80. CONCLUSION This research pioneers in demonstrating that super-agers prefer an alkaline diet, highlighting the potential role of alkaline diet in countering cognitive decline associated with aging.

Abstract
The impact of aging on diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains underestimated. The current study aimed to investigate the association between biological aging and DR, in contrast to chronological age (CA). Using the National Health and Nutrition Survey data from 2005 to 2008. Biological aging was evaluated through the biological age (BA) and phenotypic age (PA), which were calculated from clinical markers. DR was identified in participants with diabetes mellitus (DM) when they exhibited one or more retinal microaneurysms or retinal blot hemorrhages under retinal imaging, with or without the presence of more severe lesions. Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression was performed, and the regression model was further fitted using restricted cubic splines. The discriminatory capability and clinical utility of the model were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and decision curve analysis (DCA). Based on weighted analyses, of the 3100 participants included in this study, of which 162 had DR. In the adjusted model, BA (odds ratio [OR] = 1.12, 95% CI, 1.06-1.18) and PA (OR = 1.11, 95% CI, 1.07-1.14) were associated with DR, while CA was not significantly (OR = 1.01, 95% CI, 0.99-1.03). Narrowing the analysis to DM participants and adjusting for factors like insulin showed similar results. ROC and DCA analyses indicate that BA/PA predicted DR better than CA and offer greater clinical utility. The positive association between BA/PA and DR was consistent across subgroups despite potential interactions. Biological aging heightens DR risk, with BA/PA showing a stronger association than CA. Our findings underscored the importance of timely anti-aging interventions for preventing DR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the potential of adhering to the American Heart Association's updated Life's Essential 8 (LE8) scores in delaying biological aging amid growing concerns about aging populations and related diseases. METHODS A total of 18 261 adults (≥ 20 years old) were examined using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2005-2010 and 2015-2018. The LE8 includes 8 components, covering health behaviors and factors. Acceleration of biological aging was defined as an excess of biological/phenotypic age over chronological age, assessed by using clinical biomarkers. The association between LE8 score and biological aging was explored through regression analyses. RESULTS Each 10-point increase in LE8 scores was associated with a 1.19-year decrease in biological age and a 1.63-year decrease in phenotypic age. Individuals with high cardiovascular health (CVH) had a 90% reduction in their risk of accelerated aging based on biological age and an 81% reduction based on phenotypic age compared with individuals with low CVH. Bootstrap-based model estimates and weighted quantile sum regression suggested that health factors, particularly blood glucose, had strong impact on delaying aging. The association between smoking and biological aging seemed to differ depending on the definition of aging used. Among all subgroups, LE8 consistently correlated negatively with biological aging, despite observed interactions. Three sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of our conclusions. CONCLUSIONS A higher CVH is associated with a lower risk of biological aging. Maintaining elevated LE8 levels across demographics, regardless of cardiovascular history, is recommended to delay aging and promote healthy aging, with significant implications for primary health care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. We aimed to investigate the association between the percentage of dietary carbohydrate intake (DCI) and epilepsy prevalence among American adults. METHODS We analyzed the data from 9,584 adults aged 20-80 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2018. Logistic regression was applied to explore the association between the percentage of DCI and epilepsy prevalence. RESULTS A total of 146 (1.5%) individuals with epilepsy were enrolled in this study. The average age of the participants was 56.4 years, and 5,454 (56.9%) individuals were female. A high DCI was associated with an increased prevalence of epilepsy (odds ratio [OR], 4.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-18.69; P = 0.035) after adjusting for age, sex, marital status, race/ethnicity, educational level, family income, body mass index, smoking status, drinking status, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Stratified analyses indicated a positive correlation between DCI and epilepsy prevalence in adults with different characteristics. Compared with individuals in quartile 1 of DCI (<40.5%), those in quartile 4 (>55.4%) had an adjusted OR for epilepsy of 1.72 (95% CI, 1.09-2.73, P = 0.02, P for trend = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS A high percentage of DCI was associated with an increased prevalence of epilepsy. The risk of epilepsy increased 3.5-fold with a 1% increase in DCI. These results suggest an important role of DCI in the dietary management of epilepsy.

BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the relationship between vitamin B1 intake and cognitive function in older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional observational study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. A total of 2422 participants were included in the analysis, with dietary vitamin B1 intake being determined by averaging two 24-h dietary recalls. Cognitive function was assessed using three cognitive function tests: the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) for processing speed, the Animal Fluency Test (AFT) for executive function, a Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD) subtest for memory. Test-specific and global cognition z score was created. Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the association between vitamin B1 and cognitive function. RESULTS 2422 participants, aged 60 years and older, were included from NHANES across two survey cycles (2011-2014). Higher vitamin B1 intake was associated with higher DSST, AFT scores (P < 0.001) as well as the global cognition z score (P = 0.008). In the fully adjusted model, as compared to the lowest quartile (Q1), the highest quartile (Q4) of vitamin B1 intake was related to higher DSST score (β = 2.23, 95% CI 0.79 ~ 3.67) and global cognition z sore (β = 0.09, 95% CI 0.02 ~ 0.16). The association between dietary vitamin B1 intake and cognitive function scores in US adults is linear. There was no detected significant statistical interaction between these variables. CONCLUSIONS Increased dietary intake of vitamin B1 was associated with better cognitive function in individuals aged over 60.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that orally supplemented Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 (B. breve MCC1274) mitigated Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathologies in both 7-month-old AppNL-G-F mice and wild-type mice; thus, B. breve MCC1274 supplementation might potentially prevent the progression of AD. However, the possibility of using this probiotic as a treatment for AD remains unclear. Thus, we investigated the potential therapeutic effects of this probiotic on AD using 17-month-old AppNL-G-F mice with memory deficits and amyloid beta saturation in the brain. B. breve MCC1274 supplementation ameliorated memory impairment via an amyloid-cascade-independent pathway. It reduced hippocampal and cortical levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase as well as heat shock protein 90, which might have suppressed tau hyperphosphorylation and chronic stress. Moreover, B. breve MCC1274 supplementation increased hippocampal synaptic protein levels and upregulated neuronal activity. Thus, B. breve MCC1274 supplementation may alleviate cognitive dysfunction by reducing chronic stress and tau hyperphosphorylation, thereby enhancing both synaptic density and neuronal activity in 17-month-old AppNL-G-F mice. Overall, this study suggests that B. breve MCC1274 has anti-AD effects and can be used as a potential treatment for AD.

Abstract
Background The aging global population has led to an increased burden of cognitive impairment in older adults. Objective This study examined the relationship between fermented dairy intake and cognitive function in this population. Methods Yogurt, cheese, and fermented dairy consumption were assessed through two 24-hour dietary recall interviews, categorized into low, medium, and high intake groups. Multivariate linear regression was employed to examine the relationship between fermented dairy intake and cognitive tests, including the Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning Immediate Recall Test (CERAD-IRT), CERAD Delayed Recall Test (CERAD-DRT), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and global cognitive z-scores, adjusting for potential confounding factors. Results The study comprised 2,462 participants (average age 69.34±6.75 years, 52.07% female). Among yogurt consumers, global cognition and AFT z-scores are notably higher than non-consumers. Conversely, individuals who consume cheese display significantly lower CERAD-DRT z-scores. Compared to participants not intake fermented dairy, consumers of fermented dairy show significantly higher AFT and DSST z-scores and lower CERAD-DRT z-scores. Moreover, when categorizing individuals based on their intake of fermented dairy, those with low and medium consumption show significantly higher AFT and DSST z-scores, as well as significantly lower CERAD-DRT z-scores compared to non-consumers. Conclusions Our study suggests that moderate consumption of fermented dairy products is associated with better executive function and verbal fluency in the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To scrutinize the relationship between vitamin B2 consumption and cognitive function based on the NHANES database. METHODS This cross-sectional study included eligible older adults from the NHANES 2011-2014. Vitamin B2 intake was determined from dietary interview data for two 24-h periods. Cognitive function was evaluated through the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). The regression analyses were used to evaluate the association of vitamin B2 intake with cognitive performance. Stratified analyses based on gender, race, and body mass index (BMI) were conducted. RESULTS Higher vitamin B2 intake was correlated with higher scores on each test. As compared to the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of vitamin B2 intake was related to a 45.1-fold increase (P = 0.004) on the DSST test sores. Moreover, those who were males, non-Hispanic whites, or had a BMI of 18.5 to 30 kg/m2 had a stronger relationship between total vitamin B2 consumption and cognitive function. CONCLUSION It's possible that older persons who consume more vitamin B2 have enhanced performance in some areas of cognitive function. To determine the causal link between vitamin B2 consumption and cognitive performance, further long-term research is required.

Abstract
OBJECT To explore the potential association between dietary live microbe intake and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC). METHODS We conducted a cross-section study based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We categorized the participants into three groups (low, medium, and high dietary intake of live microbes) according to Sanders's dietary live microbe classification system and participants' 24-h dietary recall data. AAC was quantified by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and diagnosed by using the Kauppila AAC-24 score system. The analyses utilized weighted logistic regression and weighted linear regression. RESULTS A total of 2,586 participants were included. After the full adjustment for covariates, compared to participants with a low dietary live microbe intake, participants with a high dietary live microbe intake had a significantly lower risk of severe AAC (OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.22, 0.68, p = 0.003), and the AAC score was also significantly decreased (β:-0.53, 95% CI: -0.83, -0.23, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION In this study, more dietary live microbial intake was associated with lower AAC scores and a lower risk of severe AAC. However, more research is needed to verify this.
