Abstract
Background Health literacy is an important means to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities. It plays an important role in promoting multiple health-related behaviors of individuals. Numerous studies have demonstrated a number of sociodemographic and school characteristics, and family related factors were related to health literacy among college students. However, these characteristics and factors were relatively unchangeable. Research on the relationship between factors, that can be intervened, and health literacy remains scarce. This study aims to explore the association between personal and changeable environmental factors, and the level of health literacy in college students. Methods A cross-sectional study, which used a stratified random sampling method, was conducted at a university in Wuhan (N = 447). The survey questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, the School Environment Questionnaire, the Family Environment Questionnaire, the General Self-Efficacy Scale Questionnaire, and the Health Literacy Questionnaire. We used Spearman correlation tests, and Student's tests or analyses of variance to describe the relationship among continuous variables. In addition, we employed linear regression analysis to test the mediating effect based on the bias-corrected nonparametric percentile Bootstrap method. Results Factors related to socioeconomic status, such as living costs (p = 0.011), residential area (p = 0.003), annual household income (p = 0.001), and parents' education level (fathers: p = 0.001; mothers: p = 0.01) and occupation type (fathers: p < 0.001; mothers: p = 0.044), had close correlations with health literacy. School and family environments and self-efficacy had a positive impact on college students' health literacy (β = 0.235, p < 0.001; β = 0.323, p < 0.001; β = 0.489, p < 0.001). Self-efficacy had a mediating effect on the relationship between school and family environments, as well as health literacy. The total, direct, and indirect effects of the school environment on health literacy were 0.235, 0.157, and 0.078, respectively. The total, direct, and indirect effects of the family environment on health literacy were 0.323, 0.189, and 0.134, respectively. Conclusion This study confirms that improving school and family environments could directly or indirectly increase college students' health literacy through promoting their self-efficacy. Socioeconomic status has a significant impact on their health literacy. Moreover, other factors that affect students' health literacy and relationships among self-efficacy, surrounding environments, and health literacy may need to be explored in the future.

Abstract
Health literate self-management education is at stake for the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases in low resources settings and countries. Here we describe the Learning Nest in Ordinary Context (NA-CO in French, Nids d'Apprentissage en Contexte Ordinaire) aiming at the structuring of health education programs at the micro- (education sessions) and the meso-levels (adapted to context). The Learning Nest model was designed based on a combination on health literacy principles and on studies conducted with vulnerable people with non-communicable diseases. Observation of NA-CO active-learning sessions found them to be operational and relevant as they center on access, understanding, and use of health information while integrating the ordinary context of learners. The Learning Nest packages (including several adapted thematic sessions, training of trainers and development in context) were shown to be feasible and realistic in diverse locations (Reunion, Mali, Mayotte, Mauritius, Burundi). Qualitative and intervention studies have documented the potential usefulness of the Learning Nest model for context- and setting-specific health literacy interventions.

Abstract
ISSUE ADDRESSED With the emerging focus on designing health-literate organisations and health care systems, it is essential to understand the health literacy profiles of the medical workforce including medical students, as medical professionals play a key role in within these systems. Medical professionals contribute to good patient health outcomes through enabling access to appropriate health care, provision of quality health information and collaborative shared decision-making, which are fundamental health literacy competencies. The aim of this study is to identify health literacy strengths and weaknesses of medical students enrolled in an Australian Doctor of Medicine programme. METHODS Students from all 4 years of an Australian Doctor of Medicine programme were invited to complete an anonymous, online survey in January 2021. Health literacy profiles were identified using the 9-domain, 44-item multi-dimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire, a validated tool which comprehensively evaluates health literacy strengths and weaknesses from diverse perspectives. Demographic characteristics and social attributes were also recorded. The results were compared with Australian Bureau of Statistics data. RESULTS Eighty-six participants completed the survey. Most participants were female students (57%) who spoke English at home (88%) with tertiary-educated fathers (60%) and resided in locations associated with high socioeconomic status during adolescence (61%). Males scored significantly higher in three domains which explored health information access and appraisal, and ability to actively engage with health care providers. Students' scores were significantly lower than the Australian general population in Domain 6 (Ability to actively engage with health care providers) and Domain 7 (Navigating the health care system). CONCLUSIONS Medical students' health literacy profiles indicate areas of weakness in their ability to engage with health care providers and to navigate the health system. Medical educators will need to create opportunities to address these weaknesses within medical curricula. Gender differences identified in self-rated ability to access and appraise health information requires further exploration. SO WHAT?: Further understanding of health literacy profiles of medical students may influence design of medical school curricula.

Abstract
Evaluating prospective graduates' health literacy profiles before they enter the job market is crucial. Our research aimed to explore the health literacy levels of medical and health students by assessing their ability to obtain health-related information, understand healthcare systems, use e-health, and be informed about vaccination as well as to explore the factors associated with health literacy. Short versions of the HLS19-Q12 were used for a cross-sectional survey that was carried out among 1042 students enrolled in various medical and health educational programs at three medical universities in Kazakhstan between September and November of 2023. Additionally, instruments such as Digital Health Literacy (HLS19-DIGI), Navigational Health Literacy (HLS19-NAV), and Vaccination Health Literacy (HLS19-VAC) were employed. The score of General Health Literacy was 88.26 ± 17.5. One in eight students encountered difficulties in Vaccination Health Literacy. Despite overall high health literacy, Navigational Health Literacy posed challenges for all students. The Public Health students exhibited the highest General Health Literacy (91.53 ± 13.22), followed by students in Nursing, General Medicine, other educational programs (Dentistry and Biomedicine) and Pharmacy. Financial constraints for medication and medical examinations significantly influenced health literacy across all types of individuals. Since comprehensive health literacy instruction or interventions are still uncommon in the curricula, it seems reasonable to develop and incorporate appropriate courses for medical and health educational programs.

Abstract
Objective To explore the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) toward glioma of patients with neurological symptoms or diseases. Methods This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted at two medical centers in Henan Province between January 2023 and April 2023 and enrolled patients with neurological symptoms or diseases. The demographic characteristics of the participants and their KAP toward glioma were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. A structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine the relationship among KAP dimensions. Results The study included 442 valid questionnaires. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 7.65 ± 1.62 (possible range: 0-9), 37.98 ± 3.17 (possible range: 9-45), and 40.16 ± 4.17 (possible range: 10-50), indicating good knowledge, favorable attitude, and active practice. The SEM analysis showed that knowledge directly affected attitudes (β = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.73-1.06, P < 0.001) but not practice (β = -0.08, 95%CI: -0.32-0.14, P = 0.487), while attitudes directly affected practice (β = 0.35, 95%CI: 0.21-0.48, P < 0.001). Conclusion Patients with neurological symptoms/diseases who had heard of gliomas had good knowledge, favorable attitudes, and active practice toward glioma. Specific knowledge items that would warrant improvements were identified in the specific population of patients with neurological symptoms/diseases who had heard of glioma. Future studies should also examine the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cumulative evidence supports the importance of health literacy in determining the quality of healthcare delivery and outcomes. To enhance health literacy competencies among professionals and alleviate healthcare barriers owing to patients' inadequate health literacy, evidence-based health literacy competency guidelines are needed for the development of health professionals' training curricula. The aim of this study was to validate and refine a set of health literacy competencies, including knowledge, attitude, and skills of health professionals, and to prioritize the importance of health literacy practices among healthcare professionals. METHODS We employed a consensus-building approach that utilized a modified three-round Delphi process conducted in 2017. An online Delphi panel was assembled, comprising 20 Taiwanese health literacy experts from diverse fields such as medicine, nursing, public health, language, and communication. A set of health literacy competencies previously identified and validated by an international panel of health literacy experts was cross-culturally translated. RESULTS After three rounds of ratings and modifications, a consensus agreement was reached on 42 of 62 health literacy competencies, including 12 of 24 knowledge items, 9 of 11 attitude items, and 21 of 27 skill items. Of the 32 health literacy practices, "avoidance using medical jargon," "speaking slowly and clearly with patients," and "using analogies and examples" were deemed most important by the panelists. CONCLUSIONS The Delphi panel's consensus helped to identify a set of core health literacy competencies that could serve as measurable learning objectives to guide the development of a health literacy curriculum for health professionals. The prioritized health literacy practices can be employed as indicators of health literacy competencies that health professionals should learn and routinely use in clinical settings.

Abstract
Establishing new institutions for health professions provides the opportunity to implement innovative approaches catering to the current health needs and also allows to address the inadequacies of well-established institutions. Grabbing this opportunity, we initiated the implementation of reflective practices at Madan Bhandari Academy of Health Sciences, a new provincial university in Nepal. Though literature shows that reflection is a helpful tool to reflect on choices, experiences, and failures and obtain knowledge for the students, the adoption of reflective writing in health professions education in Nepal is limited. Therefore, we looked into the practices from other countries to adopt them in our settings and integrated them into our curriculum. But, we came across many impediments during the process-particularly those related to limited resources. We found innovative solutions like using technology and peer mentoring to overcome these challenges and integrated these practices to initiate reflective writing at the institution. The introspective "talking to oneself" has been a valuable strategy for implementing the reflective practices at our institution. Based on our experiences, we highly recommend educators in Nepal or similar settings embrace team-based writing practices that are contextually appropriate. But, we also recognize the benefits of team-based reflective writing that considers the cultural context. We hope this review will inspire educators, particularly those who lack the resources to initiate such practices at their institution. Our firsthand experience is detailed in this perspective article.

Abstract
Background Health literacy proficiency is essential for health care professionals to provide quality patient care. There is limited research exploring health literacy proficiency among undergraduate health science students. Objectives To determine health literacy among health science students in Singapore using the electronic Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). Design A cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling was conducted among undergraduate health science students. Methodology This study hypothesises that health literacy is influenced by gender, and it increases with the level of health science education, attributed to the increased exposure to the health care system and health care education as undergraduates progress through the years of study. Eligible students from the 4-year entry-level programmes of diagnostic radiography, dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, radiation therapy and speech and language therapy, aged from 21 to 50, were invited. Exclusion criteria were students who were no longer studying due to dropping out or having immediately graduated from these programmes and students in the accelerated programmes whose studies would be completed in less than 4 years. Results In total, 111 respondents (72 females and 37 males) completed surveys (response rate, 7.7%) returned from physiotherapy (n = 69), occupational therapy (n = 25), diagnostic radiography (n = 12) and dietetics (n = 5), with nil from radiation therapy and speech and language therapy. All participants were English literate. Female participants demonstrated higher HLQ with a mean total score of 30.67 (standard deviation (SD) = 0.61) versus male participants 29.83 (SD = 0.53). Year 2, 3 and 4 students generally scored higher than Year 1 across all nine HLQ scales. Overall, dietetics students had the highest total score on the HLQ, while the diagnostic radiography students had the lowest scores for all the nine HLQ scales. Conclusion This study established the health literacy level of health science students in Singapore. Gender and years of study influenced health literacy levels, supporting the hypothesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of global deaths. University students with unhealthy lifestyle constitute a high-risk group for NCDs. Evaluating and developing healthy behaviors during this period is very important for future health outcomes. This study was conducted to determine healthy life skills in university students. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted at a university, and data were collected between January and March 2023 in Istanbul. Data were collected using the healthy living skills scale in University Students and the Personal Information Form. Normal distribution conditions of the data were checked with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. According to data distribution, data with normal distribution were analyzed using parametric statistics including t-test, ANOVA and Chi-square tests and data with non-normal distribution were analyzed using non-parametric tests including Mann-Whitney U-test and Fisher's exact test. Logistic regression test was used to determine predictor variables. RESULTS The average score for healthy life skills was 63.5 out of 84. Significant differences were found in the scores based on marital status, economic income, social security insurance coverage, and educational grade (p = 0.03, p = 0.001, p = 0.004, p = 0.04, respectively). Students who reported alcohol and smoking consumption had lower scores (60.8 ± 12) out of 84. CONCLUSION The study revealed that university students in Istanbul possess a satisfactory level of healthy life skills. By providing social support, such as expanding the coverage of social security insurance and establishing conducive educational environments, while also paying attention to the influence of peers on students, we can contribute to the development of healthy life skills in university students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hospitals have a vital role in the future of health systems with upcoming structure, resources, and process changes. Identifying the potential aspects of change helps managers proactively approach them, use the opportunities, and avoid threats. This study presents a mind map of future changes in Iranian hospitals to develop a base for further related studies or prepare evidence for interventions and future-related decisions. METHODS This study is a qualitative-exploratory one, conducted in two phases. In the first phase, in-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify future hospital changes over 15 years. The interviews were analyzed using the content analysis method and MAXQDA 2018 software and holding two expert panels to develop the mind map using the 2016 Visio software. RESULTS In the first phase, 33 interviews led to 144 change patterns. In the second phase, a mind map of changes was drawn according to experts' opinions with ten categories: structure and role, knowledge management and research, service delivery, health forces, political and legal, economic, demographic and disease, technological, and values and philosophy, and environmental. CONCLUSIONS Many changes affecting hospitals rooted in the past continue to the future, but the point is the increasing intensity and speed of changes. Healthcare systems need a systematic approach to monitoring the environment to be updated, agile and proactive. These monitoring systems are essential in providing evidence for Macro-level decision-makers.

Abstract
BackgroundPrimary health care (PHC) serves as the gatekeeper of health system and PHC physicians take on significant obligations to provide health care services in the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). PHC physicians' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can have a strong impact on patients, physicians and the health care system. Lifestyle interventions are found to be effective to improve HRQoL. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between lifestyle behaviors and HRQoL among PHC physicians, so that lifestyle intervention can be tailored by policy makers for health promotion.MethodsA survey covering 31 provinces and administrative regions in China was conducted in 2020 using a stratified sampling strategy. Data on sociodemographic characteristics lifestyle behaviors and HRQoL were collected by a self-administered questionnaire. HRQoL was measured through EuroQol-five dimension-five level (EQ-5D-5L) instrument. A Tobit regression model was performed to evaluate the association between sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors and HRQoL.ResultsAmong 894 PHC physicians who completed the survey, Anxiety/Depression (AD) was the dimension with the most problems reported (18.1%). Regular daily routine (β = 0.025, 95%CI 0.004 to 0.045) and good sleep quality (β = 0.049, 95% CI = 0.029 to 0.069) were protective factors for HRQoL, while smoking (β = −0.027, 95% CI = −0.079 to −0.003) and frequency of eating breakfast (β = −0.041, 95%CI = −0.079 to −0.003) were negatively associated with HRQoL. Physical activity and alcohol drinking were not significantly associated with HRQoL.ConclusionThese findings suggest that tailored interventions on daily routine, improving sleep quality, and tobacco control among PHC physicians may be effective strategies to improve their HRQoL.

Abstract
Cluster analysis can complement and extend the information learned through epidemiological analysis. The aim of this study was to determine the relative merits of these two data analysis methods for describing the multidimensional health literacy strengths and challenges in a resource poor rural community in northern India. A cross-sectional survey (N = 510) using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) was undertaken. Descriptive epidemiology included mean scores and effect sizes among sociodemographic characteristics. Cluster analysis was based on the nine HLQ scales to determine different health literacy profiles within the population. Participants reported highest mean scores for Scale 4. Social support for health (2.88) and Scale 6. Ability to actively engage with healthcare professionals (3.66). Lower scores were reported for Scale 3. Actively managing my health (1.81) and Scale 8. Ability to find good health information (2.65). Younger people (<35 years) had much higher scores than older people (ES >1.0) for social support. Eight clusters were identified. In Cluster A, educated younger men (mean age 27 years) reported higher scores on all scales except one (Scale 1. Feeling understood and supported by a healthcare professional) and were the cluster with the highest number (43%) of new hypertension diagnoses. In contrast, Cluster H also had young participants (mean age 30 years) but with low education (72% illiterate) who scored lowest across all nine scales. While epidemiological analysis provided overall health literacy scores and associations between health literacy and other characteristics, cluster analysis provided nuanced health literacy profiles with the potential to inform development of solutions tailored to the needs of specific population subgroups.

Abstract
Background An adequate level of health literacy will help university students to better respond to public health emergencies and reduce unintended harm caused by public health events. The objective of this study was to assess the health literacy levels of students from Universities of Shaanxi province of China, in order to provide a basis for the development of health literacy promotion plan for university students. Methods An online cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted at five universities in Shaanxi Province of China on the Wen-Juan-Xing online platform. A purposive sampling method was used to 1578 students via self-administered questionnaire. Comparisons of means were made using the t-test and ANOVA, and comparisons of ratios or composition ratios were made using the χ2 test. Results The mean score for health literacy was (105.33±10.14) out of 135, and the mean scores for the three dimensions of health knowledge, attitudes and practices were (36.093±4.192), (34.178±4.227) and (35.059±4.515) respectively. Of the total sample, 39.2% were classified as sufficient in health literacy. Female students had higher health literacy level than male students (t=4.064, p=0.044), lower grade students scored higher than higher grade (F=3.194, p=0.013), students from urban cities scored higher than those who came from rural areas (t=16.376, p<0.001), and university students with health education experience scored higher than those without (t=24.389, p<0.001). Conclusion University students' health literacy is closely related to their gender, grades, family location and health education experience.

Abstract
Background This study aims to assess healthy lifestyle behaviors among undergraduate students and determine the association between electronic health literacy with lifestyle behavior among undergraduate Jordanian university students. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The study recruited 404 participants utilizing undergraduate students from public and private universities. The e-Health literacy scale was used to assess the level of health information literacy among university students. Results Data were collected from 404 participants who reported very good health status, the majority of the participants were female 57.2% with an average age of 19.3 years. The results showed that participants had good health behavior in terms of exercise, taking breakfast, smoking status, and sleeping status. The results have shown an inadequate level of e-Health literacy 16.61 (SD = 4.10) out of 40. The vast majority of students, in terms of their attitudes toward the Internet, thought that Internet health information was very useful/useful (95.8%). Also, they thought that online health information was very important /important (97.3%). The results showed that students who were attending public universities had higher e-Health literacy scores rather than those who were attending private universities, t (402) = 1.81, p = .014. The mean e-Health literacy score for nonmedical students was higher than those for medical students (p = .022). Conclusion The study's findings provide important insights into the health behaviors and electronic health literacy of undergraduate students in Jordanian universities, and offer valuable guidance for future health education programs and policies aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Health literacy is defined as the ability to collect, understand, evaluate and use health information. Previous studies have shown that the German population has only an average level of health literacy. Health professionals such as nurses, doctors or midwives need to be health literate themselves to promote patients' health literacy, as well as to protect and promote their own health. So far, there is a lack of research about health literacy among health professionals in Germany. The objective of this study was to assess the health literacy of health professionals. METHOD The study involved 583 participants from the final year classes of the DHBW Stuttgart and dual cooperation partners (vocational schools and academic teaching hospitals). These included graduates of nursing, midwifery and therapy (physiotherapy/logo-/occupational therapy), as well as management in health care and medical students in their practical year. The questionnaire HLS-EU-Q16 was used to record health literacy. By means of 16 questions, the participants rated on a 4-point scale how easy or difficult it was for them to find, understand, assess and implement health-related information. RESULTS The study showed that only 30.1% of the participants had sufficient health literacy; 48.9% of the participants showed problematic health literacy, 21.0% inadequate health literacy. The analysis of the individual questions showed that, in almost all areas, paticipants reported more problems in finding, understanding, assessing and implementing health-related information than respondents in other European countries. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows that young health professionals have limited health literacy. Further research is needed to obtain a more comprehensive and differentiated picture of health literacy among health professionals. Health literacy skills and competencies should be systematically introduced in health professions-related study curricula, as well as in bedside training.

Abstract
Objectives Self-report measures of health literacy frequently encompass a group of conceptually distinct but related domains scored as either a single scale or separately for each domain. Psychometric studies of the 44-item Health Literacy Questionnaire, scored as nine separate scales, typically report the results of correlated factors confirmatory factor analyses as validity evidence. However, some scales are quite strongly correlated, raising the question of whether there is sufficient discriminant validity to warrant separate scoring. This psychometric study aims to contrast the results of fitting higher-order and bifactor models as alternative options to illuminate the issue. Methods Correlated factors, higher-order and bifactor confirmatory factor analysis models were fitted to an Australian sample of responses to the Health Literacy Questionnaire (N = 813) using Bayesian confirmatory factor analysis methods. Results All models representing a nine-factor structure for the Health Literacy Questionnaire fitted well. The correlated factors model replicated previous findings, showing inter-factor correlations between 0.19 and 0.93. A higher-order model showed relatively high loadings of all nine first-order factors on the second-order factor with particularly high loadings (⩾0.97) for three. Two bifactor models showed that the majority of Health Literacy Questionnaire items were multifactorial, each containing systematic variance from both a General Health Literacy factor and a domain-specific factor. Seven items from four scales were identified as strongly associated with the General Health Literacy factor, with item content suggesting that this factor indexes a broad sense of agency and efficacy in interacting with health-related information and healthcare providers. Conclusion Contrasting correlated factors, higher-order and bifactor models fitted to the Health Literacy Questionnaire suggest that constituent items in self-report health literacy questionnaires might be anticipated to represent at least two sources of reliable and substantive common factor variance: variance associated with General Health Literacy and variance associated with a more specific domain, suggesting that items may be 'irreducibly' heterogeneous. Implications for test development and validation practice are discussed.

Abstract
An adequate level of health literacy is essential for clear communication between patients and health care workers. The internationalization of universities is increasing in the field of health care. The aims of our research were to measure (1) the level of health literacy and its correlation among university students and (2) the relationship between the different instruments measuring health literacy. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the 2020/2021 academic year. The questionnaire included questions on sociodemographic status, study data, health status, and health literacy level. According to the HLS-EU-Q16 health literacy questionnaire, more than half of the students had a limited HL level in disease prevention (52.4%) and health promotion (58.4%) subindexes. Nationality was found to be an influencing factor (p < 0.001). According to the NVS, 80.1% of the students had an adequate HL level. A significant correlation was found between the results and nationality (p = 0.005). None of the Chew questions demonstrated a correlation with nationality (q1 p = 0.269, q2 p = 0.368, q3 p = 0.528). Nationality is a key factor in the level of subjective and functional health literacy. We need to measure both types of levels to see the real results.

OBJECTIVES The objectives of the HOLISTIC Cohort Study are to establish a prospective cohort study covering a period of three years that characterizes the health of students within and across health professional education programs at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, implement an interprofessional student research team, and generate a meaningful dataset that is used to inform initiatives that improve student health. This report describes the protocol of the HOLISTIC Cohort Study, including survey development, recruitment strategy, and data management and analysis. METHODS An interprofessional student research team has been organized with the goal of providing continuous assessment of study design and implementation across the seven health science colleges (applied health sciences, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work) at the University of Illinois Chicago in Chicago, IL. To be eligible to participate in the HOLISTIC Cohort Study, students are required to be 1) age 18 years or older; 2) enrolled full- or part-time in one or more of UIC's seven health science colleges; and 3) enrolled in a program that prepares its graduates to enter a healthcare profession. The study protocol includes a series of three recruitment waves (Spring 2021 [April 14, 2021, to May 5, 2021; completed], Spring 2022, Spring 2023). In the first recruitment wave, eligible students were sent an invitation via electronic mail (e-mail) to complete an online survey. The online survey was based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2019 survey and the 2014 World Health Organization Report of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts Working Group Vaccine Hesitancy Scale. Electronic informed consent and study data are collected and managed using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) tools. This study utilizes convenience sampling from all seven health science colleges at UIC with a target recruitment total of 2,000 participants. DISCUSSION AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS A total of 555 students across all seven health science colleges (10.8% of 5,118 students who were invited; 27.6% of target sample size) enrolled in the cohort during the first recruitment wave. The pilot data establishes the feasibility of the study during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adaptations to overcome barriers to study implementation, including the use of remote, rather than in-person, study meetings, staff training, and participant recruitment are discussed. For the second and third waves of recruitment, the student research team will seek institutional review board (IRB) approval to implement additional enrollment strategies that are tailored to each health science college, such as online newsletters, virtual townhalls, flyers on bulletin boards near classrooms tailored to each health science college.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the attitude of medical students towards cultural diversity aiming to elucidate our current status in understanding cultural awareness and sensitivity. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A web-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 601 undergraduate health science students (medical and dental courses) at a health sciences university in eastern Nepal via various modes of social-media platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, Gmail, etc. OUTCOME MEASURES: Medical students' attitude towards cultural diversity and its association with the sociodemographic profile of the students. RESULTS A total of 601 students participated in the study, out of which, 64.2% were men with a sex ratio of 1.8:1 and a mean age of 22.3±1.9 years. More than two-thirds (77.2%) of the students had an excellent to good attitude towards cultural diversity. The proportion of students reporting 'excellent' attitude towards cultural diversity was higher among male students compared with female students (37.8% vs 20.5%) and students aged >22 years compared with younger students (37.1% vs 26.7%). Gender (p<0.001) and age (p=0.009) were significantly associated with the attitude towards cultural diversity. CONCLUSIONS Medical students, in general, are aware of the impacts of a cross-cultural society on the delivery of quality healthcare and also about the need to be aware of prejudices doctors may have towards certain cultures. Majority suggest the inclusion of concepts of multicultural awareness and sensitivity in the medical curriculum itself.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early intervention (EI) providers work with parents of children with or who have risk factors of developmental delay or disability through Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Many parents in the United States have low health literacy; therefore, EI providers should be aware of and address families' health literacy needs. EI providers need to be health literate themselves to implement evidence-based recommended practices. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to measure health literacy levels of interdisciplinary EI providers and investigate associations between health literacy levels and demographic variables. METHODS A survey containing the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) was completed by EI providers working at 10 EI centers in Massachusetts. Scale scores were calculated and compared across demographic variables, including EI job role, age, years of EI experience, and highest education level. KEY RESULTS Of 715 EI providers invited to participate, 376 surveys were completed (52.6% response rate). Most participants were women (92.6%, n = 348), reported race as White (85.4%, n = 321), had a mean age of 43.1 years (standard deviation [SD] 12.9) ranging from 20 to 74 years, and English as their primary language (89.6%, n = 337). EI providers scored the lowest on HLQ Scale 5 "Appraisal of health information" (mean [M] = 2.99 (SD 0.50) [confidence interval (CI) 2.93, 3.04]), and Scale 7 "Navigating the healthcare system" (M = 3.83 (SD 0.58) [CI 3.77, 3.89]). EI providers having stronger health literacy profiles were generally older, with a higher education level, were licensed providers, or had more years of EI work experience. CONCLUSIONS EI providers require adequate health literacy to manage their health needs and to effectively provide services to EI families. Study results may inform future targeted professional development to support improvement of EI providers' health literacy skills, including appraisal of health information and navigation of the health care system. Study results reveal EI providers struggled with health literacy skills of appraising health information and navigating the health care system, which are vital for EI practice. Abstract
Research evidence shows that health literacy development is a key factor influencing non-communicable diseases care and patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals with strong health literacy skills are essential for providing quality care. We aimed to report the validation testing of the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) among health professional students in Nepal. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 419 health sciences students using the HLQ in Nepal. Validation testing and reporting were conducted using five sources outlined by ‘the 2014 Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing’. The average difficulty was lowest (17.4%) for Scale 4. Social support for health, and highest (51.9%) for Scale 6. Ability to actively engage with healthcare providers. One factor Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) model showed a good fit for Scale 2, Scale 7 and Scale 9 and a reasonable fit for Scale 3 and Scale 4. The restricted nine-factor CFA model showed a satisfactory level of fit. The use of HLQ is seen to be meaningful in Nepal and warrants translation into native Nepali and other dominant local languages with careful consideration of cultural appropriateness using cognitive interviews.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review was to provide an overview of cross-sectional studies that examined health literacy among university students and to identify possible determinants related to health literacy. METHOD The current review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were systematically searched for cross-sectional studies that examined health literacy among university students. Results of included studies were narratively summarized. RESULTS The systematic review includes twenty-one research studies. The majority of studies report health literacy scores among university students that are lower compared to reference samples. The health literacy of students is influenced by different variables (age, gender, number of semesters, course of studies/curriculum, parental education, and socioeconomic background). DISCUSSION Health literacy activities should target all students. Universities should make use of their resources and offer health literacy courses for students in which content is used from disciplines available at the university (e.g., medicine, health, or psychology). To increase effectiveness, health literacy courses should be adapted according to the different needs and characteristics of the student subgroups.

Abstract
Health literacy is one of the most critical aspects of health promotion. Limited health literacy is also accounted for adverse health outcomes and a huge financial burden on society. However, a gap exists in the level of health literacy, especially among undergraduates. This study aimed to assess the levels of health literacy and its socio-demographic determinants among undergraduate students of Tribhuvan University, Nepal. A web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 469 undergraduate students from five institutes of Tribhuvan University, Nepal. The 16-item short version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16) was used to measure students' health literacy levels. Associated factors were examined using Chi-square tests followed by multivariate logistic regression analyses at the level of significance of 0.05. Nearly 61% of students were found to have limited health literacy (24.5% had "inadequate" and 36.3% had "problematic" health literacy). Female students (aOR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1-2.5), students from non-health related majors (aOR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.2-3.0), students with unsatisfactory health status (aOR = 2.8, 95% CI: 1.7-4.5), students with poor financial status (aOR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.2-6.8) and students with low self-esteem (aOR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.5-4.1) were significantly more likely to have limited health literacy. The majority of the undergraduates were found to have limited health literacy. Gender, sector of study, self-rated health status, self-rated financial status, and self-esteem were significantly associated with limited health literacy. This study indicates university students should not be assumed to be health-literate and interventions to improve students' health literacy especially for those whose majors are not health-related should be implemented. Further studies using a longer version of the health literacy survey questionnaire and qualitative methods to explore more on determinants of health literacy are recommended.

Abstract
This study examined student and practising nurses’ health literacy knowledge, and its correlates in Ghana. It was underpinned by an adapted version of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) conceptual framework of health literacy. We used convenience and snowball sampling techniques to collect data from 876 nurses (477 student nurses and 399 practising nurses) in a cross-sectional survey from February 2019 to June 2019. The respondents were drawn from all the former ten administrative regions of Ghana. Approximately 75.4% of the respondents had heard of health literacy. However, health literacy knowledge was generally low (average score of 6.6 out of 20) among both groups, with student nurses (average score of 5.8 out of 20) having significantly lower scores than practising nurses (average score of 7.4 out of 20). Factors associated with health literacy knowledge among student nurses included gender (male, B = −0.499, p < 0.01), trust in others (B = −0.874, p < 0.001), cultural values (B = 0.276, p < 0.001), year of study (B = 0.244, p < 0.05), and frequency of curative care use (B = −0.236, p < 0.05). For practising nurses, trust (B = −1.252, p < 0.01), cultural values (B = 0.357, p < 0.01), and working experience (B = 0.612, p < 0.01) were associated with their health literacy knowledge. Thus, responses targeted at gaps in health literacy knowledge of student and practising nurses must be sensitive to personal characteristics (e.g., gender), social values (e.g., issues of trust, and cultural beliefs and practices), as well as factors relating to nursing education and experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health communication is a field that uses social and behavioral models to improve health outcomes and raise awareness on major health risks that threaten human well-being. Low-income countries (LICs) suffer from the effects of communicable and noncommunicable diseases that are exacerbated by weak health-care systems, lack of awareness campaigns, and ineffective communication tactics. This work aims to explore health communication research in LICs to find strategies that help improve health outcomes in the future. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed database was explored systematically for publications related to health communication from LICs between January 1, 1960, and January 1, 2020. Publications were categorized according to country of origin and were analyzed with respect to population size, gross domestic product (GDP), and primary school enrollment of each state as obtained from the World Bank Open Data. RESULTS Collectively, LICs published 796 contributions, comprising 1.08% of the total biomedical research published by LICs and 0.27% of the world's health communication research. Malawi had the highest number of publications per GDP, with 32.811 publications per billion US$. Uganda had the most contributions per population, with 9.579 publications per million persons. Ethiopia had the highest amount of contributions per primary school enrollment with a ratio of 2.461 publications per %gross. The role of health communication in promoting HIV awareness and prevention was the most common theme explored. Other infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, and Ebola, were also highlighted. Improving communication in health education was also explored. CONCLUSION Health communication is a rising field in LICs, with research focusing on disease prevention. Efforts to amplify research are key to effectively utilize the health communication models and improve health outcomes in LICs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy (HL) and patient activation (PA) are necessary foundations to engage patients in self-management intervention. Each concept plays a unique role in improving access to the effective self-management of chronic disease. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the levels and determinants of HL and PA among the multi-morbid COPD patients in Nepal. METHODS We conducted interviews with a simple random sample of 238 multi-morbid COPD people from July 2018 to January 2019. The questionnaire included sociodemographic profiles, five domains of the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), 13-item Patient Activation Measure (PAM) and patient's illness perception by Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the associations. RESULTS Most people with COPD had low health levels across each of the five domains of the HLQ. The proportion of people with low literacy level across each of the domains was: (i) feeling understood and supported by healthcare providers (79.0%), (ii) having sufficient information to manage my own health (76.5%), (iii) social support for health (77.3%), (iv) ability to find the good health information (75.2%), and (v) understand the health information well enough to know what to do (74.8%), respectively. The majority of patients also reported low levels of patient activation (level 1: 81.5%; level 2: 11.8%), with only 6.7% (level 3: 5%; level 4: 1.7%) reported higher patient activation level. We found significant associations between poor HL levels in the HLQ domains and having no education, being female or from Indigenous and Dalits communities, and having a monthly family income of less than USD176. Having no education and poor illness perception were significantly associated with poor activation level on PAM scale. CONCLUSION A high proportion of multi-morbid COPD peoples had low levels of HL and were less activated than what would be required to self-manage COPD. These were in turn associated with socioeconomic factors and poor illness perception. The findings from this study are being used to design a COPD self-management program tailored to the low health literate population.

Abstract
Health literacy is the capacity to understand, access, and effectively utilize health information and healthcare to make informed health decisions. This cross-sectional study uses the multi-dimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) to investigate associations between demographic characteristics, self-rated health and health literacy among students (n = 932) in two Australian universities. We used Pearson's chi-square to determine differences in self-rated health between demographic groups, Cohen's defect Sizeto measure differences in HLQ scale scores between demographic groups, and logistic regression to determine associations between HLQ scores and self-rated health. A clear association was found between self-rated health and health literacy: as health literacy increased, so did self-rated health. Findings also demonstrate lower health literacy for culturally and linguistically diverse students, and those studying Arts compared to Health degrees. Lower self-rated health was correlated with HLQ scales including being less active in managing one's own health, having less social support for one's health, possessing insufficient health information and lower confidence in navigating the healthcare system. This study provides a comprehensive picture of potentially vulnerable students and identifies strategies for supporting their health endeavors while studying at university.

Abstract
Health literacy has been defined by the World Health Organization as the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. Its importance in reducing inequalities makes health literacy a thematic area that should be addressed in the training of professionals in the fields of healthcare, Social Work and Education. The objective of this study was to define the health literacy levels of students from the Universities of Girona and Barcelona (Spain) and the Regional Institute of Social Work in Perpignan (France). A cross-sectional study was conducted among students of Nursing, Social Work, Primary Education and Special Education in the 2017–2018 academic year. Sociodemographic and academic variables were considered and the HLS-EU-Q16 questionnaire was used to study health literacy levels. In total, 219 students with an average age of 24.9 participated. Of these, 64.4% were studying Social Work, 23.7% Nursing, 5.9% Primary Education, and 5.9% Special Education. Of the total sample, 36.5% were classified as sufficient in health literacy. The total average score of the health literacy index was 11.1; 13.2 among Nursing students; 10.5 among Social Work students; 10.1 among Primary Education students, and 10.1 among Special Education students (p < 0.001). Nursing students obtained the best results and healthcare was the highest rated subdomain, more than disease prevention and health promotion.
