Abstract
Introduction Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the human ability to align body movement rhythms with external rhythmic stimuli. While the effects of rhythmic stimuli containing only temporal information on SMS have been extensively studied, less is known about how spatial information affects SMS performance. This study investigates the neural mechanisms underlying SMS with rhythmic stimuli that include both temporal and spatial information, providing insights into the influence of these factors across different sensory modalities. Methods This study compared the effects temporal information and spatial information on SMS performance across different stimuli conditions. We simultaneously recorded the electroencephalogram (EEG), the electromyogram (EMG), and behavioral data as subjects performed synchronized tapping to rhythmic stimuli. The study analyzed SMS performance under conditions including auditory, visual, and auditory-visual motion stimuli (containing both temporal and spatial information), as well as auditory, visual, and auditory-visual non-motion stimuli (containing only temporal information). Specifically, the research examined behavioral data (i.e., mean asynchrony, absolute asynchrony, and variability), neural oscillations, cortico-muscular coherence (CMC), and brain connectivity. Results The results demonstrated that SMS performance was superior with rhythmic stimuli containing both temporal and spatial information compared to stimuli with only temporal information. Moreover, sensory-motor neural entrainment was stronger during SMS with rhythmic stimuli containing spatial information within the same sensory modality. SMS with both types of rhythmic stimuli was found to be dynamically modulated by neural oscillations and cortical-muscular coupling in the beta band (13-30 Hz). Discussion These findings provide deeper insights into the combined effects of temporal and spatial information, as well as sensory modality, on SMS performance. The study highlights the dynamic modulation of SMS by neural oscillations and CMC, particularly in the beta band, offering valuable contributions to understanding the neural basis of sensorimotor synchronization.

Abstract
Background Music elicits multifactorial benefits in emotional, social, cognitive, and academic aspects of human life. Music is clinically proven to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood and self-expression, particularly after traumatic events. Studies have also demonstrated that music promotes parasympathetic autonomic systems, suppresses hyperactivation of stress responses, and boosts immune functions. However, its ability to promote brain plasticity and signalling are only beginning to be realized. Moreover, its employment as a therapy for the treatment of specific aspects of other neurological disorders, including neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions and their comorbidities, is fast becoming an interesting field of research. Objective The aim of this review is to summarize some of the recent studies focused on evaluating the applications of music therapy. For this purpose, we have focused on disorders encompassing both temporal extremities of brain developmental stages, from developmental conditions of autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to ageing-related pathologies of Parkinson's disease and dementias. Results The findings of the reviewed studies indicate potent utilities of music-based interventions in beneficially affecting multiple spheres of brain functions, such as sensorimotor, auditory, communication/language, psychological/emotional, behavioural, sleep and memory and cognitive attributes of patients diagnosed with diverse neuropathologies. Nevertheless, lack of standardized protocols for music provision as well as absence of information regarding key aspects, such as cultural and musical orientations of subjects and therapists'/caregivers' attitudes, have hindered the complete realization of music's therapeutic potential for neurological conditions. Further, while some studies have undertaken assessments of core neurophysiological mechanisms underlying music therapy, this information is largely lacking for most clinical studies. Conclusion While this is not an exhaustive review of literature, we do hope that it serves as a platform to promote future research for establishing music therapy as a relevant neurotherapeutic strategy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the impact of gait training with rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) on enhancing gait speed in older people admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward (CRW), compared to conventional gait training methods. METHODS The study was designed as a single-center, open-label, pilot, randomized, parallel-group study. Thirty older people admitted to CRW were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which received gait training with RAS (n = 15, females = 53.3%, mean age = 83.9, SD = 6.5), and the control group, which underwent usual gait training (n = 15, females = 60.0%, mean age = 81.3, SD = 8.4). Regardless of their assigned group, all participants underwent 30 min training sessions, five times a week, for 3 weeks. The primary outcome was the 10 m walk test (10mWT), and the secondary outcomes included the Medical Outcome Study 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey and the Japanese version of the modified Gait Efficacy Scale. All measurements were taken at baseline and again at week 3. RESULTS Results indicated that older people in CRWs in the experimental group showed significant improvements in their 10mWT (effect size - 1.02) compared to the control group. None of the secondary outcomes were significant. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of a gait practice intervention using RAS in a CRW. Abstract
BACKGROUND Music Therapy (MT) is a unique treatment method for Persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) that can accelerate their functional recovery. MT has been proven to adjust the gait performance of PwMS in a short period. Its therapeutic effects in gait disorders of PwMS for long-term intervention are also starting to draw interest, but it has yet to be investigated. AIM This review aimed to systematically examine the outcomes of PwMS with gait disorders after receiving MT intervention. METHODS A systematic review has been performed using several academic databases with keywords such as music therapy, multiple sclerosis, and gait. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022365668). RESULTS A total of 405 studies were initially identified. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, twelve studies were finally included. The results showed that all PwMS received MT intervention with different strategies, and ten studies confirmed that gait disorders of PwMS were effectively improved by MT intervention. CONCLUSION Most previous studies focused on the transient effects of MT on the gait performance of PwMS. This review bridges gaps in the long-term intervention of MT on gait disorders of PwMS and offers references for therapists to design treatment plans. According to this review, MT intervention has positive therapeutic effects on gait disorders in PwMS.

Abstract
There is a growing body of research examining the potential benefits of music therapy-based auditory stimulation (MT) for individuals with movement disorders in improving gait performance. However, there is limited knowledge about the effects of MT on gait outcomes in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). A previous review of MT's impact on gait in TBI had limitations, and there are no studies on its effects on gait in SCI. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to more thoroughly evaluate the impact of MT on gait outcomes in individuals with TBI and SCI. We systematically searched through eight databases and found six studies on MT in TBI and four on SCI. Our meta-analysis showed that MT has positive medium effect improvements on spatiotemporal aspects of gait in individuals with TBI (Hedge's g: 0.52) and SCI (0.53). These findings suggest that MT could be a practical intervention for enhancing different aspects of gait in these populations, although the limited number and "fair" quality of the studies included in the meta-analysis may affect the generalizability of the outcomes. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which MT may influence gait and determine the optimal parameters for its use.

Abstract
There is a growing interest in the use of music therapy in neurological rehabilitation. Of all the major neurological illnesses, stroke rehabilitation has been observed to have some of the strongest potential for music therapy's beneficial effect. The current burden of stroke has raised the need to embrace novel, cost-effective, rehabilitation designs that will enhance the existing physical, occupation, and speech therapies. Music therapy addresses a broad spectrum of motor, speech, and cognitive deficits, as well as behavioral and emotional issues. Several music therapy designs have focused on gait, cognitive, and speech rehabilitation, but most of the existing randomized controlled trials based on these interventions have a high risk of bias and are statistically insignificant. More randomized controlled trials with greater number of participants are required to strengthen the current data. Fostering an open and informed dialogue between patients, healthcare providers, and music therapists may help increase quality of life, dispel fallacies, and guide patients to specific musical interventions.

Abstract
Research in basic and clinical neuroscience of music conducted over the past decades has begun to uncover music’s high potential as a tool for rehabilitation. Advances in our understanding of how music engages parallel brain networks underpinning sensory and motor processes, arousal, reward, and affective regulation, have laid a sound neuroscientific foundation for the development of theory-driven music interventions that have been systematically tested in clinical settings. Of particular significance in the context of motor rehabilitation is the notion that musical rhythms can entrain movement patterns in patients with movement-related disorders, serving as a continuous time reference that can help regulate movement timing and pace. To date, a significant number of clinical and experimental studies have tested the application of rhythm- and music-based interventions to improve motor functions following central nervous injury and/or degeneration. The goal of this review is to appraise the current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of music and rhythm to modulate movement spatiotemporal patterns and restore motor function. By organizing and providing a critical appraisal of a large body of research, we hope to provide a revised framework for future research on the effectiveness of rhythm- and music-based interventions to restore and (re)train motor function.

Abstract
Introduction:The music as a powerful, and versatile stimulus for the brain, is at the date sometimes used in neurorehabilitation and proposed as a promising complementary strategy provided in combination with other therapy in individuals with neurological disorders. Different techniques and devices have been developed in the field of the music-based neurorehabilitation.Areas covered:This scoping review analyzes the current scientific literature concerning the different techniques and devices used in the music-supported neurorehabilitation, also focusing on the devices used in music-based therapies in patients with neurological disorders: 46 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included.Expert opinion:Included studies, highlight the potentiality and the versatility of the music-based therapy in the rehabilitation of neurological disorders. The variety of existing techniques allow to applied the music-based therapy in different situations and conditions. Moreover, the wide range of used devices that ranging from the simple musical instruments to the more advanced technologies, allows to develop customized exercises based on the needs of the patient. This review may be considered as a starting point to better design future RCTs that would investigate the effectiveness of music therapy on neurological disorders.
