Abstract
PURPOSE Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumour and account for over one-third of cases. Traditionally, estimations of morbidity and mortality following surgical resection have depended on subjective assessments of various factors, including tumour volume, location, WHO grade, extent of resection (Simpson grade) and pre-existing co-morbidities, an approach fraught with subjective variability. This systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to evaluate the efficacy with which machine learning (ML) algorithms predict post-operative outcomes in meningioma patients. METHODS A literature search was conducted in December 2023 by two independent reviewers through PubMed, DARE, Cochrane Library and SCOPUS electronic databases. Random-effects meta-analysis was conducted. RESULTS Systematic searches yielded 32 studies, comprising 142,459 patients and 139,043 meningiomas. Random-effects meta-analysis sought to generate restricted maximum-likelihood estimates for the accuracy of alternate ML algorithms in predicting several postoperative outcomes. ML models incorporating both clinical and radiomic data significantly outperformed models utilizing either data type alone as well as traditional methods. Pooled estimates for the AUCs achieved by different ML algorithms ranged from 0.74-0.81 in the prediction of overall survival and progression-/recurrence-free survival, with ensemble classifiers demonstrating particular promise for future clinical application. Additionally, current ML models may exhibit a bias in predictive accuracy towards female patients, presumably due to the higher prevalence of meningiomas in females. CONCLUSION This review underscores the potential of ML to improve the accuracy of prognoses for meningioma patients and provides insight into which model classes offer the greatest potential for predicting survival outcomes. However, future research will have to directly compare standardized ML methodologies to traditional approaches in large-scale, prospective studies, before their clinical utility can be confidently validated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skull base meningiomas are chronic conditions that can present with a wide variety of symptoms ranging from near normalcy to chronic and prolonged disability and also often worsen by treatment-related sequelae. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the quality of life (QOL) among patients with skull base meningioma and evaluate the impact of microsurgery on their overall well-being. METHODS In this prospective observational study, 36 patients undergoing microsurgery for skull base meningioma were assessed for QOL using SF-36 questionnaires. Results were compared to the QOL of 36 patients with a non-neurosurgical chronic disease (diabetes mellitus) and 36 matched healthy volunteers. This study commenced from 2019 and ended in 2022. RESULTS All QOL parameters in skull base meningioma patients were preoperatively significantly worse than in the healthy population. The most affected QOL domain were role limitation due to physical health (RLPH) and role limitation due to emotional problems (RLEP). Within one year after surgery, skull base meningioma patients showed a significant improvement of all QOL parameters. The domains of physical functioning (PF), emotional well-being (EWB), body pain (BP) and general health (GH) improved to similar values as their matched healthy controls. However, social functioning (SF), RLPH, and RLPE remained still significantly affected. Compared to chronic diabetic patients, the domains PF, EWB, BP, and GH showed significantly better QOL values after one year in skull base meningioma patients, but RLEP and RLPH were worse. CONCLUSION Microsurgery can significantly improve all QOL domains in skull base meningioma patients within one year. Physical activity, overall health, and mental well-being have been observed to return to even normal levels. While certain QOL domains may still be affected post-microsurgery, it is evident that microsurgery can yield a substantial improvement, ultimately raising QOL to levels surpassing those seen in other non-neurosurgical chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors in adults and are increasing in incidence due to the aging population and increased access to neuroimaging. While most exhibit nonmalignant behavior, a subset of meningiomas are biologically aggressive and are associated with treatment resistance, resulting in significant neurologic morbidity and even mortality. In recent years, meaningful advances in our understanding of the biology of these tumors have led to the incorporation of molecular biomarkers into their grading and prognostication. However, unlike other central nervous system (CNS) tumors, a unified molecular taxonomy for meningiomas has not yet been established and remains an overarching goal of the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy-Not Official World Health Organization (cIMPACT-NOW) working group. Additionally, clinical equipoise still remains on how specific meningioma cases and patient populations should be optimally managed. To address these existing gaps, members of the International Consortium on Meningiomas including field-leading experts, have prepared this comprehensive consensus narrative review directed toward clinicians, researchers, and patients. Included in this manuscript are detailed overviews of proposed molecular classifications, novel biomarkers, contemporary treatment strategies, trials on systemic therapies, health-related quality-of-life studies, and management strategies for unique meningioma patient populations. In each section, we discuss the current state of knowledge as well as ongoing clinical and research challenges to road map future directions for further investigation.

Abstract
Neuropsychological studies have demonstrated that meningioma patients frequently exhibit cognitive deficits before surgery and show only limited improvement after surgery. Combining neuropsychological with functional imaging measurements can shed more light on the impact of surgery on cognitive brain function. We aimed to evaluate whether surgery affects cognitive brain activity in such a manner that it may mask possible changes in cognitive functioning measured by neuropsychological tests. Twenty-three meningioma patients participated in a fMRI measurement using a verbal working memory task as well as three neuropsychological tests focused on working memory, just before and 3 months after surgery. A region of interest based fMRI analysis was used to examine cognitive brain activity at these timepoints within the central executive network and default mode network. Neuropsychological assessment showed impaired cognitive functioning before as well as 3 months after surgery. Neuropsychological test scores, in-scanner task performance as well as brain activity within the central executive and default mode network were not significantly different between both timepoints. Our results indicate that surgery does not significantly affect cognitive brain activity in meningioma patients the first few months after surgery. Therefore, the lack of cognitive improvement after surgery is not likely the result of compensatory processes in the brain. Cognitive deficits that are already present before surgery appear to be persistent after surgery and a considerable recovery period. Our study shows potential leads that comprehensive cognitive evaluation can be of added value so that cognitive functioning may become a more prominent factor in clinical decision making.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study is the first to examine theory of mind (ToM) sequelae in a sample of adult survivors of primary brain tumors, and to investigate the assumed relationship between ToM and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHOD Participants were 40 long-term adult survivors of primary brain tumors and 40 matched healthy controls. They completed ToM tests (Faux-Pas test and Advanced ToM task) and two questionnaires assessing HRQoL (36-Item Short-Form Health Survey and EORTC QLQ-C30/QLQ-BN20). Their relatives also completed an observer-rated version of the SF-36 questionnaire. RESULTS Survivors performed worse than controls only on the Advanced ToM task. Overall, patients and caregivers reported more problems than healthy controls and their relatives regarding both global HRQoL and its social/emotional aspects. No relationship was found between ToM and HRQoL scores. CONCLUSION Adult survivors of primary brain tumors may exhibit ToM deficits several years after treatment and report more problems on social/emotional HRQoL components. Our findings highlight the need to consider these late effects in survivors' long-term follow-up, even if the clinical involvement of ToM deficits still needs to be elucidated. The assessment of ToM deficits and their potential impact on survivors' everyday life is thoroughly discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe quality and outcomes of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures (PROMs) used in patients with refractory hormone-producing pituitary adenomas, and to provide an overview of PROs in these challenging pituitary adenomas. METHODS Three databases were searched for studies reporting on refractory pituitary adenomas. For the purpose of this review, refractory adenomas were defined as tumors resistant to primary therapy. General risk of bias was assessed using a component approach and the quality of PROM reporting was assessed using the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) criteria. RESULTS 20 studies reported on PROMs in refractory pituitary adenomas, using 14 different PROMs, of which 4 were disease specific (median general risk of bias score: 33.5% (range 6-50%) and ISOQOL score: 46% (range 29-62%)). SF-36/RAND-36 and AcroQoL were most frequently used. Health-related quality of life in refractory patients (measured by AcroQoL, SF-36/Rand-36, Tuebingen CD-25, and EQ-5D-5L) varied greatly across studies, and was not always impaired compared to patients in remission. CONCLUSION There is a scarcity of data on PROs in the subset of pituitary adenomas that is more difficult to treat, e.g., refractory and these patients are difficult to isolate from the total cohort. The patients' perspective on quality of life, therefore, remains largely unknown in refractory patients. Thus, PROs in refractory pituitary adenomas require adequate analysis using properly reported disease specific PROMs in large cohorts to enable appropriate interpretation for use in clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Few studies have reported on healthcare utilization and costs for intracranial meningioma patients, while the tumor and its treatment profoundly affect patients' functioning and well-being. Here we evaluated healthcare utilization and costs, including their determinants. METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study of adult meningioma patients ≥ 5 years after intervention. Patients completed three validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assessing patients 'functioning and wellbeing (SF-36, EORTC QLQ-BN20, and HADS) and a study-specific questionnaire assessing healthcare utilization over the previous twelve months. Healthcare costs of the twelve months prior were calculated using reported healthcare utilization ≥ 5 years after intervention by the Dutch Manual for Economic Evaluation in Healthcare. Determinants for healthcare utilization and costs were determined with regression analyses. RESULTS We included 190 patients with WHO grade I or II meningioma after a mean follow-up since intervention of 9.2 years (SD 4.0). The general practitioner (80.5%), physiotherapist (37.9%), and neurologist (25.4%) were visited most often by patients. Median annual healthcare costs were €871 (IQR €262-€1933). Main contributors to these costs were medication (45.8% of total costs, of which anti-seizure medication was utilized most [21.6%]), specialist care (17.7%), and physiotherapy (15.5%). Lower HRQoL was a significant determinant for higher healthcare utilization and costs. CONCLUSION In patients with meningioma, medication costs constituted the largest expenditure of total healthcare costs, in particular anti-seizure medication. Particularly a lower HRQoL was a determinant for healthcare utilization and costs. A patient-specific approach aimed at improving patients' HRQoL and needs could be beneficial in reducing disease burden and functional recovery.

Abstract
Historically, largely due to the good prognosis for survival, there has been little attention paid to the possible impact of meningiomas and their treatment on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, in the last decade there has been increasing evidence that patients with intracranial meningiomas suffer from long-term decreases in their HRQoL. Compared with controls and normative data, meningioma patients have worse HRQoL scores both before and after intervention and continuing long term (even after >4 years of follow-up). Overall, surgery results in improvements in many aspects of HRQoL. The limited available studies investigating the impact of radiotherapy suggest that this type of treatment decreases HRQoL scores, especially in the long term. There is however only limited evidence on additional determinants of HRQoL. Patients with anatomically complex skull base meningiomas and severe comorbidities, including epilepsy, report the lowest HRQoL scores. Other tumor and sociodemographic characteristics have shown weak associations with HRQoL. Furthermore, about one-third of caregivers of meningioma patients report caregiver burden, warranting interventions to improve caregiver HRQoL. As antitumor interventions may not improve HRQoL scores to be comparable to those of the general population, more attention should be paid to the development of integrative rehabilitation and supportive care programs for meningioma patients.

Abstract
The pattern of growth of spheno-orbital meningiomas accounts for the main presenting symptoms, such as proptosis, eye motility deficit, visual impairment, diplopia. As these are benign tumors, the postoperative patient's quality of life is an important factor to consider during the preoperative planning. A detailed literature review of superior eyelid transorbital endoscopic approach for spheno-orbital meningiomas, including our own case, was made. A Medline search up to March 2022 in PubMed online electronic database was made using the following key phrases: "superior eyelid endoscopic transorbital approach spheno-orbital meningiomas," "superior eyelid endoscopic transorbital approach," "spheno-orbital meningiomas endoscopic approach." The inclusion criteria were surgical series, reviews, and case reports in English language, as well as papers written in other languages, but including the abstract in English. Cadaveric studies, multiportal combined approaches for SOM, were excluded. The literature review has disclosed five studies for a total of 65 patients, whose demographic, clinical, pathological, surgical, complications, and outcome data were analyzed. Functional and esthetic outcome data after superior eyelid transorbital approach are the following: improvement of proptosis (100%), of visual deficits (66.66%) and of ocular paresis (75%), with only 11 complications (4 trigeminal dysesthesia, 2 CSF leak, 2 wound complications, 1 upper eyelid necrosis, 1 hemorrhage of surgical field, 1 keratitis) reported, but at the expense of extent of resection (gross total resection 33.39%). Based on the outcome data, the superior eyelid transorbital endoscopic approach results in a suitable operative technique for selected spheno-orbital meningiomas.

Abstract
This retrospective, single-institutional study investigated long-term outcome, toxicity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in meningioma patients after radiotherapy. We analyzed the data of 119 patients who received radiotherapy at our department from 1997 to 2014 for intracranial WHO grade I-III meningioma. Fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT), intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) or radiosurgery radiation was applied. The EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20 questionnaires were completed for assessment of HRQoL. Overall survival (OS) for the entire study group was 89.6% at 5 years and 75.9% at 10 years. Local control (LC) at 5 and 10 years was 82.4% and 73.4%, respectively. Local recurrence was observed in 22 patients (18.5%). Higher grade acute and chronic toxicities were observed in seven patients (5.9%) and five patients (4.2%), respectively. Global health status was rated with a mean of 59.9 points (SD 22.3) on QLQ-C30. In conclusion, radiotherapy resulted in very good long-term survival and tumor control rates with low rates of severe toxicities but with a deterioration of long-term HRQoL.

Abstract
Simple Summary Meningiomas are the most common group of primary intracranial tumors. While the majority are classified as WHO grade 1, WHO grade 2 and 3 meningiomas have poorer outcomes, even after gross total resection, and often require supplementary treatment. Long-term follow-up data regarding the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for grade 2 and 3 tumors are scarce, and data evaluating the routine use of supplementary radiotherapy and radiosurgery have been inconclusive. Furthermore, few studies have reported data on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), anxiety, and depression for these patients. In this population-based cohort study, we reviewed 51 cases of WHO grade 2 and 3 meningiomas. We found that the median OS was 13 years for grade 2 and 1.4 years for grade 3 meningiomas. Meningioma was the cause of death in 93% of the patients who passed away. The surviving patients showed HRQoL measures comparable to that of the general population, with the exception of significantly more anxiety and depression. All patients who worked preoperatively returned to work after their treatment. Abstract Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for WHO grade 2 and 3 intracranial meningiomas are poorly described, and long-term results and data evaluating the routine use of supplementary fractionated radiotherapy (RT) or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has been inconclusive. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term PFS and OS at a center that does not employ routine adjuvant RT. For this purpose, a retrospective population-based cohort study was conducted of all WHO grade 2 and 3 meningiomas surgically treated between 2005 and 2013. The cohort was uniformly defined according to the WHO 2007 criteria to allow comparisons to previously published reports. Patient records were reviewed, and patients were then prospectively contacted for structured quality-of-life assessments. In total, 51 consecutive patients were included, of whom 43 were WHO grade 2 and 8 were grade 3. A Simpson grade 1–2 resection was achieved in 62%. The median PFS was 31 months for grade 2 tumors, and 3.4 months for grade 3. The median OS was 13 years for grade 2, and 1.4 years for grade 3. The MIB-1-index was significantly associated with an increased risk for recurrence (p = 0.018, OR 1.12). The median PFS was significantly shorter for high-risk tumors compared to the low-risk group (10 vs. 46 months; p = 0.018). The surviving meningioma patients showed HRQoL measures comparable to that of the general population, with the exception of significantly more anxiety and depression. All patients who worked before surgery returned to work after their treatment. In conclusion, we confirm dismal prognoses in patients with grade 2 and 3 meningiomas, with tumor-related deaths resulting in severely reduced OS. However, the cohort was heterogenous, and a large subgroup of both grade 2 and 3 meningiomas was alive at 10 years follow-up, suggesting that a cure is possible. In addition, fractionated radiotherapy and chemotherapy had little benefit when introduced for recurrent and progressive diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE Atypical meningiomas have histologic and clinical features that fall between those for benign and malignant meningiomas. The incidence of atypical meningiomas has not been well studied with respect to changes in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification scheme over time. METHODS The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried to obtain data from 2004 to 2018 for patients with all meningiomas, including atypical. Age-adjusted incidence rates were generated and annual percent change (APC) in the incidence rates was calculated with joinpoint regression. Survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS A total of 4476 patients diagnosed with meningioma were identified from the SEER 18 registries. The incidence of atypical meningioma increased at an APC of 5.6% [95% confidence interval [CI], 3.4-7.8]; significantly faster than all meningiomas, which rose at an APC of 2.5% (95%CI 1.8-3.1;p = 0.008). For atypical meningiomas, the 1, 3, 5, and 10-year survival rates were 91.9%, 81.3%, 68.8%, and 34.3%, respectively. Male sex, older age (≥ 60 years), and large tumor size (> 5 cm) were independent risk factors for an unfavorable prognosis. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of atypical meningioma was observed to be increasing relative to all meningiomas. It is important to diligently monitor atypical meningioma incidence and mortality rates over time to see whether observed uptrends persist. Continued effort toward improving outcomes in patients with atypical meningiomas is warranted, especially in light of an apparent rise in incidence.

Abstract
In this study, we seek to explore the incidence of and potential risk factors for postoperative infarctions after meningioma surgery, in addition to the possible association with new neurological deficits, seizures, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). A single-center cohort study was conducted, where all patients operated for an intracranial meningioma at our institution between 2007 and 2020 were screened for inclusion. Clinical data were prospectively collected in a local tumor registry, and HRQoL was assessed using both generic and disease-specific instruments. In total, 327 meningioma operations were included, and early postoperative MRIs showed peritumoral infarctions in 114 (34.9%). Median infarction volume was 4.5 ml (interquartile range 2.0-9.5) and 43 (37.7%) of the infarctions were rim-shaped, 44 (38.6%) were sector-shaped, 25 (21.9%) were a combination of rim- and sector-shaped, and two (1.8%) were remote infarctions. Permanent neurological deficits were seen in 22 patients (6.7%) and deficits were associated with infarctions (p < 0.001). There was no difference in frequency of registered postoperative epilepsy between patients with versus without infarctions. Patients with infarctions reported more future uncertainty; otherwise, there were no significant differences in disease specific HRQoL between patients with versus without infarctions. In this study, we found that peritumoral infarctions after meningioma resection are common. Most patients with permanent neurological deficits had infarctions. Yet, most infarctions were small, and although sometimes symptomatic on individual level, infarctions did not lead to significant deterioration of HRQoL on group level.

Abstract
Simple Summary Spinal meningioma is the most common primary intradural spinal tumor. Although histologically benign, the tumors often cause neurological deficits. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is defined as the aspects of quality of life which are most affected by ill health and is a measure of self-perceived health status. Despite many studies evaluating the neurological outcome after surgery for spinal meningiomas, no study has been concerned with the HRQoL and frequency of return to work. In this population-based cohort study, we reviewed 84 cases of surgically treated spinal meningiomas, with a mean follow-up of 8.7 years, to assess their HRQoL compared to a sample of the general population. We found that HRQoL after surgery was equal to the normal population, and the frequency of return to work was 100%, often within three months of surgery. Thus, surgical treatment of spinal meningiomas should not be considered a threat to long-term quality of life. Abstract Spinal meningiomas are the most common primary spinal intradural tumor. This study aimed to assess Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the frequency of return to work in patients surgically treated for spinal meningiomas, in comparison to the general population. Variables were collected from patient charts, EQ-5D-3L, and study specific questionnaires. Patients who had been operated between 2005–2017 were identified in a previous study and those alive in 2020 (104 of 129) were asked to participate. Eighty-four patients (80.8%) with a mean follow-up of 8.7 years, responded and were included. Data was compared to the Stockholm Public Health Survey 2006, a cross-sectional survey of a representative sample of the general population. Analysis for potential non-response bias showed no significant differences. Women in the meningioma sample scored more problems than men with regards to mobility (p = 0.048). There were no significant differences concerning EQ-5Dindex (p = 0.325) or EQVAS (p = 0.116). The correlation between follow-up time and EQ-5Dindex was low (r = 0.167). When comparing HRQoL to the general population sample, no significant differences were found within the EQ-5D-3L dimensions, EQ-5Dindex or EQVAS. Those who postoperatively scored 3–5 on mMCs scored significantly more problems in the EQ-5D-3L dimension mobility (p = 0.023). Before surgery, 41 (48.8%) of the spinal meningioma patients were working and after surgery all returned to work, the majority within three months. Seventy-eight (96%) of the patients would accept surgery for the same diagnosis if asked today. We conclude that surgery for spinal meningiomas is associated with good long-term HRQoL and a high frequency of return to work.

Abstract
Background. Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumor in adults. Although frequently histologically benign, the clinical severity of a lesion may range from being asymptomatic to causing severe impairment of global function and well-being. The diversity of intracranial locations and clinical phenotypes poses a challenge when studying functional impairments, however, more recent attention to patient-reported outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) have helped to improve our understanding of how meningioma may impact a patient’s life.Methods. Treatment strategies such as observation, surgery, radiation, or a combination thereof have been examined to ascertain their contributions to symptoms, physical and cognitive functioning, disability, and general aspects of daily functioning.Results. This review explores the multidimensional nature of HRQOL and how patients may be influenced by meningiomas and their treatment.Conclusion. Overall, treatment of symptomatic meningiomas is associated with improved HRQOL, cognitive functioning, and seizure control while tumor size, location, histologic grade, and epileptic burden are associated with worse HRQOL.

Abstract
Objective To develop and implement a customized toolkit within the electronic medical record (EMR) to standardize care of patients with brain tumors. Patients and Methods We built a customized structured clinical documentation support toolkit to capture standardized data at office visits. We detail the process by which this toolkit was conceptualized and developed. Toolkit development was a physician-led process to determine a work flow and necessary elements to support best practices as defined by the neuro-oncology clinical team. Results We have developed in our EMR system a customized work flow for clinical encounters with neuro-oncology patients. In addition to providing a road map for clinical care by our neuro-oncology team, the toolkit is designed to maximize discrete data capture. Several hundred fields of discrete data are captured through the toolkit in the context of our routine office visits. We describe the characteristics of patients seen at our clinic, the adoption of the toolkit, current initiatives supported by the toolkit, and future applications. Conclusion The EMR can be effectively structured to standardize office visits and improve discrete data capture. This toolkit can be leveraged to support quality improvement and practice-based research initiatives at the point of care in a neuro-oncology practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The optimal management of petroclival meningiomas (PCMs) continues to be debated along with several controversies that persist. METHODS A task force was created by the EANS skull base section along with its members and other renowned experts in the field to generate recommendations for the management of these tumors. To achieve this, the task force reviewed in detail the literature in this field and had formal discussions within the group. RESULTS The constituted task force dealt with the existing definitions and classifications, pre-operative radiological investigations, management of small and asymptomatic PCMs, radiosurgery, optimal surgical strategies, multimodal treatment, decision-making, and patient's counselling. CONCLUSION This article represents the consensually derived opinion of the task force with respect to the management of PCMs.

Abstract
Simple Summary Assessment of cognition is crucial in brain tumor care, and clinical outcome along this axis is frequently neglected. As a result, a patient’s quality of life seems more impacted than usually reported in clinical series. With this article, we review the current state of affairs and search for patient- and meningioma-related outcome predictors. We found a great variety in the number and types of neuropsychological tests used and in the dimensions of cognition studied. Furthermore, data mostly originate from a selected part of the globe and therefore may not reflect a global reality. Treatment has an early cognitive impact in the majority of meningioma patients. Further long-term conclusions are precluded by a mean follow-up time shorter than one year. Anticipating cognition outcomes prior to, during, and after treatment of meningiomas remains difficult. Future research should aim for a reliable and worldwide reproducible standard battery of tests. Abstract Clinical outcomes after surgery for intracranial meningiomas might be overvalued as cognitive dimensions and quality of life are probably underreported. This review aims to summarize the current state of cognitive screening and treatment-related outcomes after meningioma surgery. We present a systematic review (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-P) 2015-based) of cognitive outcomes after intracranial meningioma surgery. A total of 1572 patients (range 9–261) with a mean age of 58.4 years (range 23–87), and predominantly female (n = 1084, 68.9%) were identified. Mean follow-up time after treatment was 0.86 ± 0.3 years. Neuropsychological assessment was very heterogeneous, but five dimensions of cognition were described: memory (19/22); attention (18/22); executive functions (17/22); language (11/22); flexibility (11/22 studies). Cognitive abilities were impaired in 18 studies (81.8%), but only 1 showed deterioration in all dimensions simultaneously. Memory was the most affected. with significant post-therapy impairment in 9 studies (40.9%). Postoperatively, only 4 studies (18.2%) showed improvement in at least one dimension. Meningioma patients had significantly lower cognitive scores when compared to healthy subjects. Surgery and radiotherapy for meningiomas were associated with cognitive impairment, probably followed by a partial recovery. Cognition is poorly defined, and the assessment tools employed lack standardization. Cognitive impairment is probably underreported in meningioma patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many intracranial meningioma patients have an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and neurocognitive functioning up to 4 yr after intervention. OBJECTIVE To assess the long-term (≥5 yr) disease burden of meningioma patients. METHODS In this multicenter cross-sectional study, patients ≥5 yr after intervention (including active magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) surveillance) were included and assessed for HRQoL (Short-Form Health Survey 36), neurocognitive functioning (neuropsychological assessment), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and work productivity (Short Form-Health and Labour Questionnaire). Multivariable and propensity score regression analyses were used to compare patients and controls, and different treatment strategies corrected for possible confounders. Clinically relevant differences were reported. RESULTS At a median of 9 yr follow-up after intervention, meningioma patients (n = 190) reported more limitations due to physical (difference 12.5 points, P = .008) and emotional (13.3 points, P = .002) health problems compared with controls. Patients also had an increased risk to suffer from anxiety (odds ratio [OR]: 2.6, 95% CI: 1.2-5.7) and depression (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.3-10.5). Neurocognitive deficits were found in 43% of patients. Although postoperative complications, radiotherapy, and reresection were associated with worse verbal memory, attention, and executive functioning when compared to patients resected once, the only clinically relevant association was between reresection and worse attention (–2.11, 95% CI: –3.52 to –0.07). Patients of working age less often had a paid job (48%) compared with the working-age Dutch population (72%) and reported more obstacles at work compared with controls. CONCLUSION In the long term, a large proportion of meningioma patients have impaired HRQoL, neurocognitive deficits, and high levels of anxiety or depression. Patients treated with 1 resection have the best neurocognitive functioning.

Abstract
Background Little is known about long-term caregiver burden in meningioma patients. We assessed meningioma caregiver burden, its association with informal caregiver's well-being and possible determinants. Methods In this multicenter cross-sectional study, informal caregivers completed the Caregiver Burden Scale (five domains and total score). Patients completed a disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaire focusing on symptoms (EORTC QLQ-BN20) and underwent neurocognitive assessment. Both groups completed a generic HRQoL questionnaire (SF-36) and the Hospital Anxiety, and Depression Scale. We assessed the association between caregiver burden and their HRQoL, anxiety and depression. Furthermore, we assessed determinants for the caregiver burden. Multivariable regression analysis was used to correct for confounders. Results One hundred and twenty-nine informal caregivers were included (median 10 years after patients' treatment). Caregivers reported burden in ≥1 domain (34%) or total burden score (15%). A one-point increase in total caregiver burden score was associated with a clinically relevant decrease in caregiver's HRQoL (SF-36) in 5/8 domains (score range: -10.4 to -14.7) and 2/2 component scores (-3.5 to -5.9), and with more anxiety (3.8) and depression (3.0). Patients' lower HRQoL, increased symptom burden, and increased anxiety and depression were determinants for higher caregiver burden, but not patients' or caregivers' sociodemographic characteristics, patients' neurocognitive functioning, or tumor- and treatment-related characteristics. Conclusions Ten years after initial treatment, up to 35% of informal caregivers reported a clinically relevant burden, which was linked with worse HRQoL, and more anxiety and depression in both patients and caregivers, emphasizing the strong interdependent relationship. Support for meningioma caregivers is therefore warranted.

Abstract
Purpose The effectiveness and safety of surgery for spheno‐orbital meningiomas remains subject of debate, as studies often describe different surgical approaches and reconstruction techniques with very heterogeneous outcomes. We aimed to systematically summarize and analyse the literature on spheno‐orbital meningiomas regarding presenting symptoms, surgical techniques, outcomes and complications. Methods Studies were retrieved from eight databases. Original articles were included if in ≥5 patients presenting symptoms, surgical treatment and outcomes were described. Fixed‐ and random‐effects meta‐analysis was performed to estimate weighted percentages with 95%CIs of presenting symptoms, outcomes and complications. Results Thirty‐eight articles were included describing 1486 patients. Proptosis was the most common presenting symptom (84%; 95%CI 76–91%), followed by unilateral visual acuity deficits (46%; 95%CI 40–51%) and visual field deficits (31%; 95%CI 20–43%). In 35/38 studies (92%), a pterional craniotomy was used. Decompression of the optic canal (82%) and the superior orbital fissure (66%) was most often performed, and usually dural (47%) and bony defects (76%) were reconstructed. In almost all patients, visual acuity (91%; 95%CI 86–96%), visual fields (87%; 95%CI 70–99%) and proptosis (96%; 95%CI 90–100%) improved. Furthermore, surgery showed improvement in 96% (95%CI 78–100%) for both diplopia and ophthalmoplegia. The most common surgical complications were hypesthesia (19%; 95%CI 10–30%), ptosis and diplopia (both 17%; 95%CI, respectively, 10–26% and 5–33%) and ophthalmoplegia (16%; 95%CI 10–24). Conclusion Patients with spheno‐orbital meningioma usually present with proptosis or unilateral decreased visual acuity. Surgery shows to be effective in improving visual acuity and visual field deficits with mostly minor and well‐tolerated complications.

Abstract
Large to giant sphenoid wing meningiomas (SWMs) remain surgically challenging due to frequent vascular encasement and a tendency for tumoral invasion of the cavernous sinus and optic canal. We aimed to study the quality of resection, postoperative clinical evolution, and recurrence rate of large SWMs. This retrospective study enrolled 21 patients who underwent surgery between January 2014 and December 2019 for SWMs > 5 cm in diameter (average 6.3 cm). Tumor association with cerebral edema, extension into the cavernous sinus or optic canal, degree of encasement of the major intracranial arteries, and tumor resection grade were recorded. Cognitive decline was the most common symptom (65% of patients), followed by visual decline (52%). Infiltration of the cavernous sinus and optical canal were identified in five and six patients, respectively. Varying degrees of arterial encasement were seen. Gross total resection was achieved in 67% of patients. Long-term follow-up revealed improvement in 17 patients (81%), deterioration in two patients (9.5%), and one death (4.7%) directly related to the surgical procedure. Seven patients displayed postoperative tumor progression and two required reintervention 3 years post initial surgery. Tumor size, vascular encasement, and skull base invasion mean that, despite technological advancements, surgical results are dependent on surgical strategy and skill. Appropriate microsurgical techniques can adequately solve arterial encasement but tumor progression remains an issue.

Psychological Burden in Meningioma Patients under a Wait-and-Watch Strategy and after Complete Resection Is High-Results of a Prospective Single Center Study. Abstract
Simple Summary Asymptomatic meningiomas are found in 1–2% of cranial MRIs. Most of them demonstrate no or minimal growth and are observed with follow-up imaging. However, the patients face a diagnosis of a brain tumor. So far, there is no established distress screening for such patients. In this study, we evaluated the psychological burden of patients with small asymptomatic meningiomas and compared it with patients after complete meningioma resection and excellent postoperative outcome. We found a high prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in both study groups. This demonstrates that even patients with benign asymptomatic intracranial tumors might be under significant distress and need psychooncological support. Abstract The diagnosis of intracranial meningiomas as incidental findings is increasing by growing availability of MRI diagnostics. However, the psychological distress of patients with incidental meningiomas under a wait-and-watch strategy is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to compare the psychosocial situation of meningioma patients under wait-and-watch to patients after complete resection to bridge this gap. The inclusion criteria for the prospective monocenter study were either an incidental meningioma under a wait-and-watch strategy or no neurologic deficits after complete resection. Sociodemographic, clinical, and health-related quality of life and clinical data were assessed. Psychosocial factors were measured by the Distress Thermometer (DT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), and the Short Form (SF-36). A total of 62 patients were included (n = 51 female, mean age 61 (SD 13) years). According to HADS, the prevalence of anxiety was 45% in the postoperative and 42% in the wait-and-watch group (p = 0.60), and depression was 61% and 87%, respectively (p = 0.005). In total, 43% of patients under wait-and-watch and 37% of patients in the postoperative group scored ≥6 on the DT scale. SF-36 scores were similar in all categories except general health (p = 0.005) and physical component aggregate score (43.7 (13.6) vs. 50.5 (9.5), (p = 0.03), both lower in the wait-and-watch group. Multivariate analysis revealed the wait-and-watch strategy was associated with a 4.26-fold higher risk of a pathological depression score based on HADS (p = 0.03). This study demonstrates a high prevalence of psychological distress in meningioma patients. Further evaluation is necessary to identify the patients in need of psychooncological support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Half of all newly diagnosed patients with glioblastoma are > 65 years still with a poor prognosis. Preserving quality of life is of high importance. However, patient reported outcome (PRO) data in this patient group is rare. The aim was to compare health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and distress between elderly and younger patients with high-grade glioma (HGG). METHODS We used baseline data of a prospective study where HGG patients were enrolled from 4 hospitals. Distress was measured using the distress thermometer (DT), HRQoL using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Core Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) plus brain module (BN20). We compared distress and HRQoL by age (≥ 65 vs. < 65 years), gender, performance score, and time since diagnosis using multivariate linear and logistic regressions. RESULTS A total of n = 93 (30%) out of n = 309 patients were ≥ 65 years (mean 70 years, range 65-86 years). Mean DT score of elderly patients (5.2, SD 2.6) was comparable with younger patients (4.9, SD 2.6). Elderly patients reported significantly lower global health (GHS, mean elderly vs. younger; 50.8 vs. 60.5, p = 0.003), worse physical (56.8 vs. 73.3, p < 0.001) and lower cognitive functioning (51.1 vs. 63.2, p = 0.002), worse fatigue (52.5 vs. 43.5, p = 0.042), and worse motor dysfunction (34.9 vs. 23.6, p = 0.030). KPS and not age was consistently associated with HRQoL. CONCLUSION Physical functioning was significantly reduced in the elderly compared with younger HGG patients, and at the same time, emotional functioning and DT scores were comparable. KPS shows a greater association with HRQoL than with calendric age in HGG patients reflecting the particular importance for adequate assessment of HRQoL and general condition in elderly patients.

Abstract
Introduction Meningioma is a heterogeneous disease and patients may suffer from long-term tumor- and treatment-related sequelae. To help identify patients at risk for these late effects, we first assessed variables associated with impaired long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and impaired neurocognitive function on group level (i.e. determinants). Next, prediction models were developed to predict the risk for long-term neurocognitive or HRQoL impairment on individual patient-level. Methods Secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional multicenter study with intracranial WHO grade I/II meningioma patients, in which HRQoL (Short-Form 36) and neurocognitive functioning (standardized test battery) were assessed. Multivariable regression models were used to assess determinants for these outcomes corrected for confounders, and to build prediction models, evaluated with C-statistics. Results Data from 190 patients were analyzed (median 9 years after intervention). Main determinants for poor HRQoL or impaired neurocognitive function were patients’ sociodemographic characteristics, surgical complications, reoperation, radiotherapy, presence of edema, and a larger tumor diameter on last MRI. Prediction models with a moderate/good ability to discriminate between individual patients with and without impaired HRQoL (C-statistic 0.73, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.81) and neurocognitive function (C-statistic 0.78, 95%CI 0.70 to 0.85) were built. Not all predictors (e.g. tumor location) within these models were also determinants. Conclusions The identified determinants help clinicians to better understand long-term meningioma disease burden. Prediction models can help early identification of individual patients at risk for long-term neurocognitive or HRQoL impairment, facilitating tailored provision of information and allocation of scarce supportive care services to those most likely to benefit. Abstract
Background We aimed to explore gaps in the care of meningioma patients that could improve quality of care by better understanding symptoms experienced by patients at various stages of treatment, and afterwards. Methods A novel 19-item self-administered questionnaire was provided for patients with meningiomas to complete by the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) over a 3-month period. Results A total of 1852 unique respondents were included. Nearly one-third of all respondents felt they received insufficient information about meningiomas at initial diagnosis (N = 607, 32.9%) and 28.8% (N = 530) believed they received insufficient information about treatment options. In fact, 34.5% of respondents received the majority of their information from the internet and nonhealthcare professionals. The most common concerns after initial diagnosis were risks associated with surgery and/or treatment (36.5%) followed by how the tumor would impact daily life (25%) and the risk of tumor recurrence (12.4%). Respondents indicated that a list of resources available for patients with meningiomas (N = 597, 32.3%) would have been most beneficial in regards to their disease experience after their initial diagnosis. Moreover, we found that a substantial proportion of patients continued to report symptoms long after treatment, with fatigue being the most common compared to before treatment (38.2% vs. 57.7%, χ 2 = 128, P < .001). Conclusions Patients with meningiomas exhibit symptoms that continue well after treatment with fatigue and cognitive impairments as the most bothersome. Moreover, patients report key communication gaps that can be addressed to improve their disease experience and care.

Abstract
Background Few studies have evaluated the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with meningiomas. Here, we report the largest prospective, longitudinal cross-sectional cohort study of HRQoL in meningiomas to date, in order to identify possible actionable determinants of global HRQoL. Methods Adults who had undergone resection of a grade I intracranial meningioma and were in routine follow-up at a single large tertiary center underwent HRQoL assessment using the QLQ-C30 questionnaire administered opportunistically at follow-up visits. Averaged transformed QLQ-C30 scores at 12-month intervals were compared with scores from a normative reference population, with reference to known minimal clinically meaningful difference (CMD) in scores. To evaluate for possible determinants of changes in global HRQoL, global HRQoL scores were correlated (Spearman's Rho) with subdomain and symptom scores and with interval time from surgical resection. Results A total of 291 postoperative patients with histologically confirmed and surgically treated grade I meningiomas consented to participation and a total of 455 questionnaires were included for analysis. Patients with meningiomas reported reduced global HRQoL at nearly every 12-month interval with clinically and statistically significant impairments at 12, 48, 108, and 120 months postoperative compared with the normative population (P < 0.05). Meningioma patients at the 12-month interval also reported a reduction of each subdomain of HRQoL assessment (P < 0.05); however, a CMD was only seen in cognitive functioning. Physical, emotional, cognitive, and social subdomains, as well as fatigue and sleep/insomnia, were significantly associated with global HRQoL at the first 12-month interval. Overall, there was no significant correlation between time from surgery and global HRQoL or the subdomain functional or symptom sections of the QLQ-C30. Conclusions Meningioma patients report considerable limitations in HRQoL for more than 120 months after surgery, particularly in cognitive, emotional, and social function, as well as suffering significant fatigue and sleep impairment compared with a normative reference population. The majority of these reported functional impairments and symptoms are strongly associated with global HRQoL and thus can be considered determinants of global HRQoL that if treated, have the potential to improve HRQoL for our meningioma patients. This hypothesis requires future study of targeted interventions to determine their efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meningioma patients are known to face cognitive deficits before and after surgery. We examined individual changes in cognitive performance over time and identified preoperative predictors of cognitive functioning 12 months after surgery in a large sample of meningioma patients. METHODS Patients underwent neuropsychological assessment (NPA) using CNS Vital Signs 1 day before (T0) and 3 (T3) and 12 (T12) months after surgery. Patients' sociodemographically corrected scores on 7 cognitive domains were compared with performance of a normative sample using one-sample z tests and chi-square tests of independence. Reliable change indices with correction for practice effects were calculated for individual patients. Linear mixed effects models were used to identify preoperative predictors of performance at T12. RESULTS At T0, 261 patients were assessed, and 229 and 82 patients were retested at T3 and T12, respectively. Patients showed impaired cognitive performance before and after surgery, and although performance improved on the group level, cognitive scores remained significantly lower than in the normative sample up to T12. On the individual level, performance remained stable in the majority of patients. Better preoperative performance, younger age, male sex, and higher educational level predicted better late cognitive performance. CONCLUSIONS Meningioma patients face serious and persistent pre- and postsurgical cognitive deficits. A preoperative NPA together with sociodemographic characteristics may provide valuable information on the late cognitive outcome of individual meningioma patients. These results can help to inform patients and clinicians on late cognitive outcomes at an early stage, and emphasizes the importance of presurgical NPA and timely cognitive rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meningioma is the most common intracranial tumor in the US and its etiology remains poorly understood. Meningioma has been predominantly studied among white populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations of anthropometric, comorbidity, and hormonal factors with meningioma in an ethnically diverse population. METHODS A nested case-control analysis was performed within the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC). Meningioma cases were identified via linkage with Medicare and the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development Hospital Discharge data and were matched to up to 10 controls. Anthropometric, comorbidities, physical activity level, and hormonal factors at baseline based on questionnaires were evaluated for association with meningioma. RESULTS A total of 894 cases and 8918 matched controls were included in this study. Increasing body mass index (BMI) (P-trend = 0.041) and weight increases since age 21 (P-trend = 0.0052) were positively associated with meningioma. Hormonal factors including oral contraceptive use (odds ratio [OR]: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.01-1.51) and estrogen hormonal therapy use (per 5 years, OR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01-1.15) were associated with meningioma risk. Hypertension was positively associated with meningioma (OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.09-1.47), with individuals who reported a history of both hypertension and diabetes showing a stronger association (OR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.17-2.03). The tests for heterogeneity across race/ethnicity were not statistically significant (P heterogeneity ≥ 0.17); however, the association of BMI with meningioma was mainly observed in Japanese Americans (P-trend = 0.0036) and hypertension in Japanese Americans (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.17-2.27) and Native Hawaiians (OR: 1.86; 95% CI: 1.02-3.40). CONCLUSION Obesity, hormonal factors, and hypertension were associated with meningioma in an ethnically diverse population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze psychopathological outcome and health-related quality of life (QOL) for cohorts of patients undergoing transcranial or transnasal anterior skull base surgery. METHODS A prospective study of patients undergoing elective surgery for various entities of the anterior skull base was performed. Evaluation for depression (ADS-K score) and anxiety (PTSS, STAI-S, STAI-T, and ASI-3 scores) was done before surgery, at 3 and 12 months after surgery. The correlation between preoperative psychological burden and postoperative quality of life as measured by the SF-36 and EuroQol questionnaires was analyzed. Incidence and influence of these psychiatric comorbidities on clinical outcome were examined and compared between transnasal and transcranial subgroups. RESULTS We included 54 patients scheduled for surgery of a pituitary adenoma or meningioma of the anterior skull base between January 2013 and July 2017. Of these, a cohort of 40 (74.1%) completed follow-up interviews after 3 and 12 months. There were 60.0% female patients, median age was 57 years. 57.5% of patients had a meningioma and were operated transcranially, while 42.5% of patients received transnasal surgery for pituitary adenoma. The proportion of pathological anxiety scores significantly decreased from 75.0 to 45.0% (p = 0.002), without difference between transnasal and transcranial subgroups. After 3 months, mean EuroQol VAS score non-significantly increased by 0.07 (p = 0.236) across the entire cohort without significant difference between transcranial and transnasal subgroups (p = 0.478). The transnasal cohort tended to score higher in anxiety scores, whereas the transcranial cohort demonstrated higher depression scores without significant difference, respectively. The individually declared emotional burden significantly decreased from 6.7 to 4.0 on the ten-point Likert scale (p < 0.001) equally for both subgroups (transnasal, - 2.3; transcranial, - 3.0; p = 0.174). On last examination, about half of the patients in each subgroup (41.2% vs. 52.2%; p = 0.491) expressed a considerable recovery of preoperative bodily complaints such as headaches, dizziness, and unrest defined as a score of at least 8 on the Likert scaled item. CONCLUSION Both transnasal and transcranial approaches yield favorable postoperative QOL and psychopathological outcomes. The postoperative increase in QOL is partly influenced by preoperative expression of mental distress, which tends to resolve postoperatively.

Abstract
OPINION STATEMENT As cancer care has evolved so has the awareness of the issues cancer patients, their caregivers and families face during and after treatment, giving rise to the cancer survivorship care initiative. The body of research pertaining to quality of life, health-related quality of life, and multidimensional symptom burden of neuro-oncology patients and their caregivers has grown significantly, yielding a wealth of data and information indicating interventions and actions targeting symptoms and needs are both warranted and desired. The provision of survivorship care aiming to deliver care in a patient-centered, whole-person model offers a means by which these interventions and actions can be actualized. The research specific to survivorship care models and survivorship care plans and their delivery remains a large opportunity, one worth the careful consideration and participation of neuro-oncology healthcare providers for the benefit of their highly deserving patients and their caregivers and families.

Abstract
Background It has been suggested that lack of ongoing registration of patient-centered outcomes has resulted in existing care trajectories that have not been optimized for sequelae experienced by meningioma patients. This study aimed to evaluate the structure of current meningioma care and identify issues and potential high-impact improvement initiatives. Methods Using the grounded theory approach, a thematic framework was constructed based on the Dutch Comprehensive Cancer Organisation survey about issues in meningioma care trajectories. This framework was used during 3 semistructured interviews and 2 focus groups with patient-partner dyads (n = 16 participants), and 2 focus groups with health care providers (n = 11 participants) to assess issues in current meningioma care trajectories and possible solutions, including barriers to and facilitators for implementation. Results Identified issues (n = 18 issues) were categorized into 3 themes: availability and provision of information, care and support, and screening for (neurocognitive) rehabilitation. A lack of information about the intervention and possible outcomes or complications, lack of support after treatment focusing on bodily and psychological functions, and reintegration into society were considered most important. Sixteen solutions were suggested, such as appointment of case managers (solution for 11/18 issues, 61%), assessment and treatment by physiatrists (22%), and routine use of patient-reported outcome measures for patient monitoring (17%). Barriers for these solutions were lack of budget, capacity, technology infrastructure, and qualified personnel with knowledge about issues experienced by meningioma patients. Conclusions This study identified issues in current multidisciplinary meningioma care that are considered unmet needs by patients, partners, and health care providers and could guide innovation of care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Brain tumours represent a significant burden for patients and caregivers. The aims of the present study were to explore the perceived benefits of support groups for patients and their caregivers, as well as the barriers to participation, and to generate suggestions for improvement. METHODS Brain tumour patients and caregivers were recruited from the brain tumour centre at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to participate in focus groups. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed using qualitative methods. Eight patients (five who had attended the support groups and three who had not) and eight caregivers (all of whom attended the groups) participated in separate focus groups. RESULTS Five major themes emerged: group cohesion (e.g., camaraderie and kinship), motivating factors to attend (e.g., loneliness), logistical factors that affected attendance (e.g., transportation), structure and content of the group (e.g., discussion topics), and suggestions for improvement (e.g., receiving personal reminders). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the supportive needs of brain tumour patients and their caregivers. The key findings provide helpful information on how to maximise the benefits of support groups for these populations.

Abstract
Brain metastases (BMs) have become increasingly prevalent and present unique considerations for patients, including neurocognitive sequelae and advanced disease burden. Therefore, assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) via patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) is an important element of managing these patients. A systematic review of the literature was conducted with the aims of (1) assessing how PROMS used in BM patients were validated, (2) assessing PROM content, and (3) evaluating quality of PROM-results reporting. PROM validation and quality of reporting were assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) grading criteria and International Society of Quality of Life (ISOQOL)-recommended PROM-reporting standards, respectively. Forty-seven studies reporting on 5178 patients with a range of primacy cancer types were included. Eight different PROMs were applied, ranging from general to brain-specific questionnaires. Weaknesses in the validation of these PROMs were assessed by the COSMIN criteria. Many of these PROMs were not developed for BM patients and contained little information on cognitive symptoms. The overall quality of PROM reporting was insufficient based on the ISOQOL scale. Given the unique clinical considerations in BM patients, our results indicate the need for a standardized, validated questionnaire to assess HRQoL in this population. Additionally, there is room for quality improvement with regard to reporting of PROM-related results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although meningioma patients show deficits in objective cognitive functioning (OCF) measured with neuropsychological tests, subjective cognitive functioning (SCF) has received little attention. We investigate SCF from pre- to postsurgery and its associations with OCF, psychological, sociodemographic, and clinical characteristics. METHODS SCF was measured using the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) 1 day before (T0) and 3 (T3) and 12 months (T12) after surgery. Patients' scores were compared with normative data and changes over time were assessed. The neuropsychological battery CNS Vital Signs and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were administered. Correlations of SCF with OCF, psychological, sociodemographic, and clinical characteristics were explored. RESULTS Patients reported significantly better SCF as compared with controls at T0 (N = 54) and T3 (N = 242), but not at T12 (N = 50). A significant decrease in group level SCF was observed from T0 to T12 (n = 24, P < .001). SCF was associated with anxiety at all time points (rs = -0.543 to -0.352) and with depression at T3 and T12 (r = -0.338 and -0.574), but not with OCF, sociodemographic, or clinical characteristics (rs = -0.202 to 0.288). CONCLUSIONS Meningioma patients experienced better SCF as compared with controls before and 3 months after surgery, which might be the result of phenomena related to disease and recovery. As the findings suggest that cognitive symptoms might increase later on, future studies should further investigate the course of SCF in meningioma patients. In clinical practice, measurements of SCF should be combined with those of OCF and psychological distress in order to determine whether and which interventions are needed.

Abstract
Background Fatigue is a common symptom in patients with brain tumors, but comprehensive studies on fatigue in patients with meningioma specifically are lacking. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of fatigue in meningioma patients. Methods Patients with grade I meningioma completed the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) before and 1 year after neurosurgery. The MFI consists of 5 subscales: General Fatigue, Physical Fatigue, Mental Fatigue, Reduced Motivation, and Reduced Activity. Patients’ scores were compared with normative data. Preoperative fatigue was compared with postoperative fatigue. Correlations with sex, age, education, tumor hemisphere, preoperative tumor volume, antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), symptoms of anxiety/depression, and self-reported cognitive complaints were explored. Results Questionnaires were completed by 65 patients preoperatively, and 53 patients postoperatively. Of 34 patients, data from both time points were available. Patients had significantly higher fatigue levels on all subscales compared to normative values at both time points. Mean scores on General Fatigue, Physical Fatigue, and Mental Fatigue remained stable over time and improvements were observed on Reduced Motivation and Reduced Activity. Preoperatively, the prevalence of high fatigue (Z-score ≥ 1.3) varied between 34% for Reduced Motivation and 43% for General Fatigue/Mental Fatigue. The postoperative prevalence ranged from 19% for Reduced Activity to 49% on Mental Fatigue. Fatigue was associated with cognitive complaints, anxiety and depression, but not with education, tumor lateralization, tumor volume, or AEDs. Conclusion Fatigue is a common and persistent symptom in patients with meningioma undergoing neurosurgery. Findings emphasize the need for more research and appropriate care targeting fatigue for meningioma patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies on the associations between preoperative cerebral edema, cognitive functioning, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in WHO grade I meningioma patients are virtually lacking. We studied the association between preoperative cerebral edema on postoperative cognitive functioning and HRQOL 6 months postoperatively in WHO grade I meningioma patients. METHODS Twenty-one consecutive WHO grade I meningioma patients, who underwent surgery, were matched individually for age, gender, and educational level to healthy controls. Tumor and edema volume were assessed on preoperative T1- and T2-weighted MRI images, respectively. At least 5 months postoperatively, functional status, cognitive functioning, and HRQOL, using a cognitive test battery and the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), were determined. The correlation between preoperative tumor and cerebral edema volume with postoperative cognitive functioning and HRQOL was investigated using Kendall's tau coefficients. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, patients had lower verbal memory capacity (p = .012), whereas HRQOL was similar to matched healthy controls. In all cognitive domains, postoperative functioning was much lower in patients with preoperative cerebral edema than in those without. There were significant correlations between preoperative cerebral edema and tumor volume and postoperative cognitive functioning. Preoperative cerebral edema and/or tumor volume were not associated with HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that WHO grade I meningioma patients with larger volumes of preoperative cerebral edema are more at risk of experiencing limitations in longer-term cognitive functioning than patients with no or less edema preoperatively. This is an important knowledge for neurologists and neurosurgeons treating patients with a meningioma. More studies regarding the effect of peritumoral edema on cognitive functioning in meningioma patients are necessary.

Abstract
Survivorship has become a significant topic within oncologic care. The tools and means by which the provision of survivorship care can be implemented and delivered are in development and are the focus of significant research oncology-wide. These tools and methods include innovations of survivorship care delivery, survivorship care plans, and improving communication among all stakeholders in an individual patient's care as the means to elevate health-related quality of life. The merits of these survivorship care provisions in the field of neuro-oncology and its patients' exigent need for more patient-centric care focused on living with their illness are discussed. Since 2014 there has been a mandate within the United States for adult cancer patients treated with curative intent to receive survivorship care plans, comprising a treatment summary and a follow-up plan, intended to facilitate patients' care after initial diagnosis and upfront treatment. Several cancer-specific survivorship care plans have been developed and endorsed by health care professional organizations and patient advocacy groups. A survivorship care plan specific for neuro-oncology has been collaboratively developed by a multidisciplinary and interprofessional committee; it is endorsed by the Society for Neuro-Oncology Guidelines Committee. It is available as open access for download from the Society for Neuro-Oncology website under "Resources": https://www.soc-neuro-onc.org/SNO/Resources/Survivorship_Care_Plan.aspx. Survivorship care offers an opportunity to begin directly addressing the range of issues patients navigate throughout their illness trajectory, an oncology initiative to which neuro-oncology patients both need and deserve equitable access.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in meningioma patients has been increasingly acknowledged in recent years. Various questionnaires have been used. However, almost none of these questionnaires has been particularly developed for and/or validated in this patient group. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relevance and comprehensiveness of existing HRQoL questionnaires used in meningioma research and to assess the agreement between patients and health care professionals (HCPs) on the most relevant and important HRQoL issues. METHODS A systematic literature search, following the PRISMA statement, was conducted to identify all HRQoL questionnaires used in meningioma research. Semi-structured interviews were organized with patients and HCPs to (1) assess the relevance of all issues covered by the questionnaires (score 0-3: not relevant-highly relevant), (2) assess the ten most important issues, and (3) identify new relevant HRQoL issues. RESULTS Fourteen different questionnaires were found in the literature, comprising 140 unique issues. Interviews were conducted with 20 patients (median age 57, 71% female) and 10 HCPs (4 neurosurgeons, 2 neurologists, 2 radiotherapists, 1 rehabilitation specialist, 1 neuropsychologist; median experience 13 years). Meningioma patients rated 17-80% of the issues in each of the questionnaires as relevant, HCPs 90-100%. Patients and HCPs agreed on the relevance of only 49 issues (35%, Cohen's kappa: 0.027). Both patients and HCPs considered lack of energy the most important issue. Patients and HCPs suggested five additional relevant issues not covered by current HRQoL questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS Existing HRQoL questionnaires currently used in meningioma patients do not fully cover all relevant issues to these patients. Agreement between patients and HCPs on the relevance of issues was poor. Both findings support the need to develop and validate a meningioma-specific HRQoL questionnaire.

Abstract
In meningiomas, location-specific differences of the prognostic value of the Simpson classification are sparsely investigated but can influence strategy of surgery. We therefore compared the prognostic value of the Simpson classification in different tumor locations. Progression was compared with Simpson grade in 826 meningioma patients (median age 58 years, female:male ratio 2.4) in location-specific uni- and multivariate analyses. Simpson grade strongly correlated with tumor location (p < .001). Within a median follow-up of 50 months, recurrence was observed in 107 of 803 patients (13%). In general, increasing Simpson grade (p = .002) and subtotal resection (STR, ≥grade III) were correlated with tumor recurrence [hazard ratio (HR): 1.87; p = .004]. In 268 convexity meningiomas, frequency of tumor recurrence correlated with Simpson grade (p = .034). Risk of recurrence was similar after grade I and II resections, tended to increase after grade III (HR: 2.35; p = .087) but was higher after grade IV resections (HR: 7.35; p = .003). Risk of recurrence was higher after STR (HR: 4.21; p = .001) than after gross total resection (GTR, ≤grade II). Contrarily, increasing Simpson grade and STR were not correlated with progression in 102 falx, 38 posterior fossa and nine intraventricular meningiomas. In 325 skull base lesions, risk of recurrence was similar after GTR and STR (p = .198) and was only increased after grade IV resections (HR: 3.26; p = .017). Simpson grading and extent of resection were not equally prognostic in all locations. Lower impact of extent of resection should be considered during surgery for skull base, posterior fossa and falx meningiomas.
