Abstract
AIMS Our goal is to perform a meta-analysis to investigate the risk of periodontitis associated with specific dietary patterns. METHODS We employed the PRISMA methodology in a meta-analysis to examine the correlation between dietary patterns and the risk of periodontitis. We systematically searched three online databases from inception to November 2024 to identify relevant studies. Summary estimates with 95%CI were calculated to assess the relationship between specific dietary patterns and the risk of periodontitis. Cumulative estimates were synthesized using random-effects or fixed-effects models. Heterogeneity among studies was evaluated using Cochran's Q and I2 statistics. RESULTS In total, we included 19 articles that analyzed 5 dietary patterns The study showed that a diet high in inflammation-promoting foods significantly raised the likelihood of periodontitis (OR = 1.39, 95% CI, 1.09-1.77), in contrast, dietary patterns like the mediterranean diet (OR = 0.96, 95% CI, 0.94-0.98), plant-based diet (OR = 0.92, 95% CI, 0.86-0.98), or dairy-rich diet (OR = 0.76, 95% CI, 0.66-0.87) lowered the risk of periodontitis. The analysis revealed no statistically significant association between a western diet (OR = 1.07; 95% CI, 0.86-1.33) and the risk of periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS As dietary diversity and complexity continue to expand, there has been a concomitant increase in the prevalence of periodontal disease. This study has identified specific dietary patterns associated with the risk of periodontitis, particularly highlighting the heightened risk linked to pro-inflammatory diets. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing targeted dietary practices to reduce the incidence of this condition.

Abstract
Objective: the aim of this study was to identify plasma metabolomic markers of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary patterns in pregnant women. Methods: This study included 186 women who had both dietary intake and metabolome measured from a nested case-control study within the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons cohort (FGS). Dietary intakes were ascertained at 8-13 gestational weeks (GW) using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and DASH scores were calculated based on eight food and nutrient components. Fasting plasma samples were collected at 15-26 GW and untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed. Multivariable linear regression models were used to examine the association of individual metabolites with the DASH score. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to select a panel of metabolites jointly associated with the DASH score. Results: Of the total 460 known metabolites, 92 were individually associated with DASH score in linear regressions, 25 were selected as a panel by LASSO regressions, and 18 were identified by both methods. Among the top 18 metabolites, there were 11 lipids and lipid-like molecules (i.e., TG (49:1), TG (52:2), PC (31:0), PC (35:3), PC (36:4) C, PC (36:5) B, PC (38:4) B, PC (42:6), SM (d32:0), gamma-tocopherol, and dodecanoic acid), 5 organic acids and derivatives (i.e., asparagine, beta-alanine, glycine, taurine, and hydroxycarbamate), 1 organic oxygen compound (i.e., xylitol), and 1 organoheterocyclic compound (i.e., maleimide). Conclusions: our study identified plasma metabolomic markers for DASH dietary patterns in pregnant women, with most of being lipids and lipid-like molecules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common symptoms reported by cancer patients and is considered to be related to inflammation. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the effects of nutritional support based on the dietary anti-inflammatory index on cancer-related fatigue in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS This was a randomized controlled trial with 106 lung cancer patients who were divided into either the anti-inflammatory diet group (n = 53) or the usual diet group (n = 53) for 3 months. The primary outcome was cancer-related fatigue. Secondary outcomes included high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) concentrations, nutritional status, and quality of life. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to examine the effectiveness of this intervention. RESULTS The anti-inflammatory diet improved fatigue (-1.99 ± 1.78, P < .001), hs-CRP levels (-4.15 [-11.87, -0.58], P < .001), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (-2.53 ± 3.11, P = .030), and albumin concentrations (2.83 ± 0.59, P < .001) compared with the usual diet after 3 months. Simultaneously, in the repeated-measures analysis of variance, the differences in fatigue ( F = 5.536, P < .001), hs-CRP levels ( F = 6.918, P < .001), and albumin concentrations ( F = 2.727, P = .048) were statistically significant for the group-by-time interaction. CONCLUSION The study provided evidence for the positive effect of nutritional support based on the dietary anti-inflammatory index on cancer-related fatigue, hs-CRP levels, nutritional status, and quality of life in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE With an anti-inflammatory diet, nurses can help these patients improve their overall quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic inflammation is associated with obesity and is an underlying pathophysiology for cardiovascular disease (CVD) development in postmenopausal women. This study aims to determine feasibility and efficacy of an anti-inflammatory dietary intervention to lower levels of C-reactive protein in weight stable postmenopausal women with abdominal obesity. METHODS This mixed-methods pilot study used a single arm pre-post design. Thirteen women followed a 4-week anti-inflammatory, dietary intervention, optimizing consumption of healthy fats, low glycemic index wholegrains, and dietary antioxidants. Quantitative outcomes included change in inflammatory and metabolic markers. Focus groups were undertaken and thematically analyzed to explore participants lived experience of following the diet. RESULTS There was no significant change in plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive, protein. Despite discouraging weight loss, median (Q1-Q3) body weight decreased by -0.7 (-1.3 to 0 kg, P = 0.02). This was accompanied by reductions in plasma insulin (0.90 [-0.05 to 2.20] mmol/L), Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (0.29 [-0.03 to 0.59]), and low-density lipoprotein:high-density lipoprotein ratio (0.18 [-0.01 to 0.40]) ( P ≤ 0.023 for all). Thematic analysis revealed that postmenopausal women have a desire to improve meaningful markers of health status that do not focus on weight. Women were highly engaged with learning about emerging and innovative nutrition topics, favoring a detailed and comprehensive nutrition education style that challenged their proficient health literacy and cooking skills. CONCLUSIONS Weight-neutral dietary interventions targeting inflammation can improve metabolic markers and may be a viable strategy for CVD risk reduction in postmenopausal women. To determine effects on inflammatory status, a fully powered and longer-term randomized controlled trial is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional epidemiology research using self-reported dietary intake is prone to measurement error. Objective methods are being explored to overcome this limitation. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine 1) the association between plasma markers related to inflammation and derive marker scores for dietary patterns [Mediterranean dietary score (MDS), energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DIITM), Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI)] and 2) the associations of these marker scores with mortality. METHODS Weighted marker scores were derived from the cross-sectional association between 30 plasma markers and each dietary score (assessed using food-frequency questionnaires) using linear regression for 770 participants in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (aged 50-82 y). Prospective associations between marker scores and mortality (n = 249 deaths) were assessed using Cox regression (median follow-up: 14.4 y). RESULTS The MDS, E-DII, and AHEI were associated (P < 0.05) with 9, 14, and 11 plasma markers, respectively. Healthier diets (higher MDS and AHEI, and lower anti-inflammatory, E-DII) were associated with lower concentrations of kynurenines, neopterin, IFN-γ, cytokines, and C-reactive protein. Five of 6 markers common to the 3 dietary scores were components of the kynurenine pathway. The 3 dietary-based marker scores were highly correlated (Spearman ρ: -0.74, -0.82, and 0.93). Inverse associations (for 1-SD increment) were observed with all-cause mortality for the MDS marker score (HR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.72-0.98) and the AHEI marker score (HR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.66-0.89), whereas a positive association was observed with the E-DII marker score (HR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.01-1.39). The same magnitude of effect was not observed for the respective dietary patterns. CONCLUSIONS Markers involved in inflammation-related processes are associated with dietary quality, including a substantial overlap between markers associated with the MDS, the E-DII, and the AHEI, especially kynurenines. Unfavorable marker scores, reflecting poorer-quality diets, were associated with increased mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The blood pressure-lowering effects of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary pattern and reduced sodium intake are well established. The effects on other biomarkers related to vascular health are of interest and might assist in explaining the effects of the DASH diet and sodium reduction. OBJECTIVES We hypothesized that a low-sodium DASH diet improves (lowers) biomarkers of inflammation [C-reactive protein (CRP) and soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR)] and mineral metabolism [phosphorus and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23)]. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of the DASH-Sodium trial using frozen serum samples. This controlled feeding study randomly assigned 412 adults (≥22 y) with elevated blood pressure (120-159/80-95 mmHg) to consume either a DASH diet or control diet. Within each arm, participants received 3 sodium levels [low (1150 mg), intermediate (2300 mg), high (3450 mg)] in random sequence, each for 30 d. To maximize contrast, samples collected at the end of the low-sodium DASH (n = 198) and high-sodium control (n = 194) diets were compared. Between-diet differences in serum CRP, suPAR, phosphorus, and FGF23 concentrations were assessed using linear regression adjusted for age, sex, race, income, education, smoking status, and BMI. RESULTS CRP concentrations did not differ between groups (P = 0.83), but suPAR was higher after the low-sodium DASH diet than the high-sodium control [geometric mean 2470 pg/mL (95% CI: 2380, 2560 pg/mL), compared with 2290 pg/mL (95% CI: 2210, 2380 pg/mL); P = 0.006]. Phosphorus was higher after the low-sodium DASH diet [geometric mean 3.50 mg/dL (95% CI: 3.43, 3.57 mg/dL)] compared with the high-sodium control diet [geometric mean 3.39 mg/dL (95% CI: 3.33, 3.46 mg/dL); P = 0.04]. FGF23 was also higher after the low-sodium DASH diet [geometric mean 35.3 pg/mL (95% CI: 33.3, 37.3 pg/mL) compared with 28.2 pg/mL (95% CI: 26.6, 29.8 pg/mL); P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Contrary to our hypothesis, biomarkers of inflammation and mineral metabolism were increased or unchanged by a low-sodium DASH diet compared with a high-sodium control diet in adults with elevated blood pressure.

Abstract
The Paleolithic diet (PaleoDiet) is an allegedly healthy dietary pattern inspired by the consumption of wild foods and animals assumed to be consumed in the Paleolithic era. Despite gaining popularity in the media, different operational definitions of this Paleolithic nutritional intake have been used in research. Our hypothesis is that specific components used to define the PaleoDiet may modulate the association of this diet with several health outcomes. We comprehensively reviewed currently applied PaleoDiet scores and suggested a new score based on the food composition of current PaleoDiet definitions and the theoretical food content of a staple dietary pattern in the Paleolithic age. In a PubMed search up to December 2019, fourteen different PaleoDiet definitions were found. We observed some common components of the PaleoDiet among these definitions although we also found high heterogeneity in the list of specific foods that should be encouraged or banned within the PaleoDiet. Most studies suggest that the PaleoDiet may have beneficial effects in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases (type 2 diabetes, overweight/obesity, CVD and hyperlipidaemias) but the level of evidence is still weak because of the limited number of studies with a large sample size, hard outcomes instead of surrogate outcomes and long-term follow-up. Finally, we propose a new PaleoDiet score composed of eleven food items, based on a high consumption of fruits, nuts, vegetables, fish, eggs and unprocessed meats (lean meats); and a minimum content of dairy products, grains and cereals, and legumes and practical absence of processed (or ultra-processed) foods or culinary ingredients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the association between index component score levels of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) density-based index and the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) for protein foods and a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level in US adults with diabetes status. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from adult participants (≥20 y) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2010 (n = 12070) to obtain hs-CRP levels and index scores in US adults. Odds ratios (OR) of having an elevated hs-CRP (>3.0 mg/L) by score levels of protein food components (low: <80% versus high: ≥80% of the maximum score) were acquired using survey multivariable logistic regression analysis. RESULTS After adjusting for age group, sex, race/ethnicity, and other potential confounders, participants with a low score were more likely to have an elevated hs-CRP level than those with a high score (DASH plant proteins and HEI-2015 seafood and plant proteins: P < 0.001). Adults with diabetes who had a low score were more likely to have an elevated hs-CRP than adults without diabetes who had a high score (DASH animal proteins: OR 1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.24-1.87) (DASH plant proteins: OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.22-1.87) (HEI-2015 seafood and plant proteins: OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.16-1.65). Among adults with diabetes, those with a low score for animal protein foods were more likely to have an elevated hs-CRP (DASH animal proteins: OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.11-1.82) than those with a high score. CONCLUSIONS Moderate intake of animal protein foods and adequate intake of plant protein foods were inversely associated with an elevated hs-CRP level in US adults, especially in those with diabetes. Further investigation is required to establish ideal density-based amounts or proportions of protein food subgroups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Systemic inflammation is considered an important issue in older adults and is associated with adverse health outcomes, such as frailty and cognitive impairment. Diet is a critical associated factor, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) is proposed as a promising tool to identify the association between diet and health outcomes. Our aims were: (i) to investigate the association between the DII® and frailty, cognition, and the consequent risk of disability in older adults; (ii) to discuss particularities of the use of DII® with older adults. METHODS The research question was based on the PICOS strategy: Population = older adults; Intervention or Exposure = DII; Comparison = any comparator; Outcomes = frailty, cognition, and risk of disability; Type of study = cohort, cross-sectional or case-control studies. We searched publications in two electronic databases (PUBMED and Web of Science) up to May 20th, 2020. RESULTS Seven studies met our criteria. Three investigated cognition (one cohort and two cross-sectional), and four investigated frailty or risk of disability (one cohort and three cross-sectional); none of the studies investigated both outcomes (frailty and cognition) simultaneously. The studies presented some issues, mainly concerning: (i) the collection of dietary data and calculation of the DII; (ii) the study design; (iii) calculation of the sample size; (iv) eligibility criteria; (v) time for follow-up; (vi) and choice of covariates. CONCLUSION despite the issues, the use of DII resulted in a significant association, or predictive value, with variables related to frailty and cognitive decline. Further studies, with sensitivity analysis of the different components of this index, are needed. DII showed to be a promising tool in the investigation of geriatric syndromes. This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020155672).

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic risk factors, characterized by abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), hypertension, and insulin resistance. Lifestyle modifications, especially dietary habits, are the main therapeutic strategy for the treatment and management of metabolic syndrome, but the most effective dietary pattern for its management has not been established. Specific dietary modifications, such as improving the quality of the foods or changing macronutrient distribution, showed beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome conditions and individual parameters. On comparing low-fat and restricted diets, the scientific evidence supports the use of the Mediterranean Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet intervention as the new paradigm for metabolic syndrome prevention and treatment. The nutritional distribution and quality of these healthy diets allows health professionals to provide easy-to-follow dietary advice without the need for restricted diets. Nonetheless, energy-restricted dietary patterns and improvements in physical activity are crucial to improve the metabolic disturbances observed in metabolic syndrome patients.

Abstract
Randomized controlled studies have shown that antioxidative supplements are effective in suppressing the progression of age-related macular degeneration and visual display terminal syndrome. However, effects of their general use in the real-world and by young and healthy individuals have not been well documented. We analyzed 27 participants who were under 35 years of age and had no diagnosed diseases. Mean functional visual acuity (FVA) score and visual maintenance ratio, which represent quick recognition of a target, both measured using FVA system, were better (both p < 0.01) in subjects who had had regular antioxidative supplement intake for more than 2 months (11 participants) compared with those who had not. Systemic data, i.e., total cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels, which correspond to chronic low-grade inflammation, were lower (all p < 0.05) in the former. Overall, hs-CRP levels had a correlation with total cholesterol (p < 0.05) and a trend of correlation with HbA1c (p = 0.054) levels. Thus, current real-world data showed that young, healthy participants who had a regular intake of antioxidative supplements had better visual acuity and systemic levels of metabolic and low-grade inflammation markers. This study will help promote future research into the effects of general antioxidative supplement use.
