Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the ameliorative effect of dietary rocket salad and apple cider vinegar on the oxidative stress (OS) status of broilers. Specifically, 720 Ross 308 chicks were divided into six groups: negative and positive controls (NC and PC with and without additives, Vi1 and V12 experimental groups fed with diets mixed with 5 and 10 mL of vinegar/kg, and Ro1 and Ro2 groups fed with diets mixed with 2 and 3 g of rocket salad/kg, respectively). The experimental groups Vi1 and Vi2 were fed with feed mixture moisturized with 5 and 10 mL of vinegar/kg, and Ro1 and Ro2 were fed with 2 and 3 g of rocket salad/kg, respectively. The birds' productivity, oxidative serum parameters, and morphometric indices of the gastrointestinal tract were registered at 6 weeks of rearing. The vinegar or rocket salad additive had powerful potentials to significantly suppress (p ≤ 0.05) OS through improving the birds' survivability, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and carcass yield. The highest villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio of the duodenum were achieved by Vi2, Ro1-2, and NC (p ≤ 0.05). The villus surface area and muscular layer thickness were smallest in the PC, while they did not differ significantly in other groups (p > 0.05). Similar relationships were found in serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, hydroperoxide, and malondialdehyde; however, higher doses of both additives were more effective. It seems that liquid vinegar and rocket salad could have beneficial influences on the antioxidant status of birds.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the utilization of alternative protein feed ingredients including sunflower meal (SFM), corn gluten meal (CGM), and dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) as a mixture in a partial replacement of soybean meal (SBM) in broiler finisher diets with different protein levels and also to evaluate their effect on birds' performance, environmental aspects of litter, cecal microbes, and economic prospects. A total of 576 (19 days old) Cobb 500 broiler chicks were fed eight finisher diets consisting of 4 control (CTL) diets based on SBM with different crude protein (CP) levels (CTL21, CTL20, CTL19, and CTL18, containing 21%, 20%, 19%, and 18% CP, respectively) and 4 test diets with alternative protein sources (APS21, APS20, APS19, and APS18, containing 21%, 20%, 19%, and 18% CP, respectively) using a 15% combination of alternative protein sources (2.5% CGM, 5% SFM, and 7.5% DDGS) until 35 days of age. The results indicated that birds fed test diets APS21 and APS20 recorded the highest (P < 0.05) body weight compared to other treatments, but it was not different than the CTL diets fed at these CP levels. The birds fed CTL18 or APS18 recorded the worst feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to other treatments. Moreover, birds fed test diet containing APS21 recorded better (P < 0.05) European performance efficiency factor and better economic efficiency when compared to other treatments, but it was not different than CTL21. In addition, birds fed diets APS21 and CTL19 showed significantly increased litter Lactobacillus spp. (P < 0.05) compared to other treatments. Cecal Lactobacillus spp. and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were not affected by CTL or APS diets. The counts of cecal Salmonella spp. increased in the CTL21 group compared to other groups. In conclusion, alternative feed ingredients (protein sources) in broiler finisher diets have positive effects in a sustainable way on the productive performance, litter and cecal microbial counts, and improved economic efficiency when compared to CTL diets.

Abstract
Neural networks (NN) are a relatively new option to model growth in animal production systems. One self-organizing submodel of artificial NN is the group method of data handling (GMDH)-type NN. The use of such self-organizing networks has led to successful application of the GMDH algorithm over a broad range of areas in engineering, science, and economics. The present study aimed to apply the GMDH-type NN to predict caloric efficiency (CE, g of gain/kcal of caloric intake) and feed efficiency (FE, kg of gain/kg of feed intake) in tom and hen turkeys fed diets containing different energy and amino acid levels. Involved effective input parameters in prediction of CE and FE were age, dietary ME, CP, Met, and Lys. Quantitative examination of the goodness of fit for the predictive models was made using R2 and error measurement indices commonly used to evaluate forecasting models. Statistical performance of the developed GMDH-type NN models revealed close agreement between observed and predicted values of CE and FE. In conclusion, using such powerful models can enhance our ability to predict economic traits, make precise prediction of nutrition requirements, and achieve optimal performance in poultry production.

Abstract
1. Successful artificial neural network (ANN) applications have been found for many areas. One sub-model of ANNs is the group method of data handling-type neural networks (GMDH-type NNs). The use of self-organising networks leads to successful application in a broad range of areas. However, the use of such methods is not common in poultry science. 2. Broiler chicken nutrition is recognised as a biological system consisting of a complex set of interconnected variables. The adequate information on nutrients (variables), such as metabolisable energy (ME) and amino acid requirements, can help to establish specific feeding programmes, defining optimal performance and reducing production costs. 3. This study addressed the question of whether GMDH-type NNs can be used to estimate the performance of broiler chickens (output) based on specified variables-inputs (dietary crude protein (CP), ME, ME/CP, methionine (Met), lysine (Lys), ME/Met and ME/Lys)-for a commercial broiler chicken farm. The recorded data from 10 broiler chicken flocks were obtained, from March 2003 to April 2005, corresponding to 52 data lines. 4. The results suggested that the GMDH-type NNs may provide an effective means of recognising the patterns in data and accurately predicting the performance of broiler chickens based on investigating inputs. In addition the polynomial equations obtained can be used to optimise the performance of broilers.
