The Global Impact of COVID-19: A Comprehensive Analysis of Its Effects on Various Aspects of Life

A quantitative investigation in a territory of Italy on citizens' attitudes towards medicines through the COVID-19 pandemic: the importance of possible indirect effects caused by the pandemic

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly influenced many aspects of everyday life, particularly that of the general population health. In order to better understand the potential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people's attitudes toward medicines use, a quantitative investigation was conducted in a territory of Sardinia region, Italy.

Methods

Stratification of the random multilevel population sample was based on gender, age range, and territory. The methodological strategy to verify the potential approach changes towards medicines due to the COVID-19 pandemic consisted of oral interviews with adult citizens and unrecognizability preservation. Investigation, also supported by a study completed before the insurgence of the pandemic about taking medicines, interrupting treatments without consulting, and reading the information leaflet, allowed to explore citizens' attitudes before and during pandemic, and changing.

Results

The most relevant findings are the tendency towards a higher occurrence of self-interruption of treatments and an increased interest in the information leaflet (package leaflet), but not an increased self-administration of medicines.

Conclusions

These results indicate new indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that could exert an additional impact on the state of citizens' health and health systems. The study, with reference to prophylactic medical treatments and based on some considerations concerning the pandemic from its insurgence to today, also provides solutions for related problems for the present or future periods of health emergencies.

Green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles for the industrial biofortification of (Pleurotus pulmonarius) mushrooms

Zinc malnutrition is major health problem in children and women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries. This study aimed to find nutritionally balanced food at an affordable cost. For this purpose, Pleurotus pulmonarius (Mushroom) is fortified with zinc oxide nano particles (ZnO-NPs) synthesized from Nigella sativa seed extract. ZnO-NPs were characterized using UV visible and FTIR Spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, XRD, PSA and Zeta potentials. ZnO-NPs were sprayed in different concentrations on substrate used for the cultivation of P. pulmonarius. Cultivated mushroom fruiting bodies were dried and powdered. Bio absorption of zinc was calculated using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Zinc absorption increased by enhancing the number of nano particles spraying on lingo-cellulosic substrate. The controlled bag had 2.27 ± 0.00 mg of zinc content per 2 g of mushroom powder. The minimum amount (3.46 ± 0.16 mg/2 g of mushroom) of zinc micronutrient was absorbed by the bag having 50 mg spray of ZnO-NPs per Kg of the wheat straw. Maximum amount of bio accumulation was done by bag having 5000 mg spray of ZnO-NPs (10.46 ± 0.08 mg/2 g of mushrooms powder). Zinc fortification had a significant (p < 0.05) effect on the uptake of zinc by fruiting bodies. ZnO-NPs at the concentration of 200 mg per kilogram of substrate gave optimized value of biological efficiency [B.E] (40.2 % ± 0.25), while B.E decreased with the increase in ZnO-NPs spray due to bio accumulation of zinc with increased concentration of ZnO-NPs spray.

These vaccines have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in averting severe illness, hospitalization, and fatalities from COVID-19, even against emerging variants. Research pursuits persist, concentrating on novel vaccine technologies, oral and nasal vaccines, broader coronavirus protection, and vaccine combinations. In the realm of therapeutics, there have been significant strides in developing oral antiviral medications and monoclonal antibodies. Nonetheless, challenges in COVID-19 vaccination persist, encompassing issues of hesitancy, accessibility, financial barriers, knowledge gaps, and logistical hindrances. Robust monitoring via global agencies and reporting systems remains pivotal. Strategies for enhancing vaccination efficacy are rooted in fostering trust, countering misinformation, and expanding access. As for therapeutics, the approach involves dedicated research, clinical trials, regulatory streamlining, stockpiling, and international collaboration. Telemedicine and public awareness campaigns play integral roles in this effort, with coordination being the linchpin for preserving lives and mitigating the disease's impact. The global campaign against COVID-19 has witnessed substantial advancements, with an ongoing research focus on developing vaccines and therapeutics that are not only more accessible and affordable but also more effective, particularly for populations in low-income countries and vulnerable communities.
