Radiotracer, gravimetric and calorimetric studies of ingestion and assimilation rates of an isopod

Trophic transfer of trace elements in a euryhaline fish, the turbot Scophthalmus maximus: Contrasting effects of salinity on two essential elements

Trace elements can be accumulated from coastal environment by aquatic organisms from their food and be transferred throughout the food webs. Studying the effects of salinity on the trophic transfer of trace elements in a euryhaline fish, able to deal with large variations in salinity, is therefore key to understand their dynamics in aquatic environments. In this context, we investigated the potential influence of salinity on the trophic transfer of two essential elements (Mn and Zn) in the euryhaline fish, the turbot Scophthalmus maximus using radiotracer techniques. After acclimation to three salinities (10, 25 and 38), turbots were fed with radiolabelled pellets (⁵⁴Mn and ⁶⁵Zn). Kinetic parameters of depuration were determined after a 21-d period and trophic transfer factors were calculated. Trophic transfer of Mn at the highest salinity was significantly lower than for the other conditions whereas salinity did not significantly influenced Zn trophic transfer. Differences in the processes involved in the regulation (homeostasis) of the two tested trace elements may explain the contrasting influence of seawater salinity for Mn and Zn.

Consumer strategies of terrestrial gastropods and isopods

Morphological, physiological and ecological evidence is used to show that terrestrial gastropods and isopods, although both can be considered as "primary consumers", deal quite differently with the vegetabilic matter they use as food. Gastropods are both efficient digesters and assimilators whereas isopods are efficient digesters but usually inefficient assimilators. This combination may require the isopods to turn to coprophagy as a means of recovering some of the products of digestion that they had been unable to assimilate during the first passage of food through the gut. Furthermore, the faeces of isopods may contain dissolved nutrients and digestive enzymes that could be distributed through various routes of the food web of which these animals are parts.

Feeding, energy flow and soil turnover in the desert isopod, Hemilepistus reaumuri

The desert woodlouse Hemilepistus reaumuri is one of the most abundant macroscopic invertebrates in North Africa, the Arabian steppes, semi-desert and desert, and the Negev desert Israel.The main purposes of our study were: 1. To investigate the feeding behaviour of H. reaumuri in the field and the laboratory, with special attention to the importance of soil and perennials in the isopods' diet. 2. To estimate annual energy flow and soil turnover by the isopods and to relate it to the role of isopods in the desert ecosystem. The results of field observations and feeding experiments in the laboratory show: a) That desert isopods are saprovores, herbivores and microbivores. b) That in order to survive the isopod should include soil particles and or soil minerals when feeding on vegetation. c) Annual ingestion was 10.3-38.6 kcals/m², 3-12% of the available dead organic matter, and soil turnover 28.5-105.7 g/m². It was hypothesized that by ingestion and defaecation of organic matter and inorganic soil particles, H. reaumuri alters the structure of the decomposition substrate and increase the rate of decomposition in the desert ecosystem.

Food, feeding rates and assimilation in woodland snails

Analyses of the faeces of seven species of woodland, litterdwelling snails (Marpessa laminata, Clausilia bidentata, Oxychilus cellarius, O. alliarius, Discus rotundatus, Arianta arbustorum and Hygromia striolata), showed that all feed predominently on higher plant material, be it living or dead. H. striolata and A. arbustorum took more chlorophyll-containing plant material than the other species, D. rotundatus had a significant amount of fungus in its faeces, while the faeces of O. cellarius and O. alliarius contained significant amounts of animal material.The consumption and assimilation of a variety of foods by molluscs was studied in the laboratory using an ash-ratio technique, which had been shown to give similar results to those obtained by the standard gravimetric technique. The assimilation efficiency of the molluscs was found to be temperature independent, but ingestion rates and absolute assimilation rates were temperature dependent. The assimilation efficiency of D. rotundatus on living plant material (three field layer species) was 44.8±4.43% that of H. striolata (Urtica dioica) was 52.4±8.78% while O. cellarius and H. aspersa (on Lactuca sativa) had assimilation efficiencies of 70.2±4.40% and 53.50±6.04% respectively. The results fall within the range shown by other invertebrate groups. The assimilation efficiency of D. rotundatus on leaf litter (a mean of 49.1±1.88% on five litter types) was higher than that shown by other invertebrates, probably due to the presence of gut polysaccharidases. The assimilation on dead earthworm as animal material (86.9±2.53% with O. alliarius and 78.6±6.73% with D. rotundatus) was in the range of true carnivores. Consumption rates were more variable; Urtica dioica, amongst living material, was eaten in greatest quantity; Acer pseudoplatanus, Castanea sativa and Quercus robur litter were eaten in greater quantity than Fagus sylvatica and Carpinus betulus. Consumption was examined in terms of percentage body weight.
