Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Ultrasonography has shown that eosinophils accumulate in each segment of the esophageal mucosa in human EoE, ultimately promoting esophageal motility dysfunction; however, no mechanistic evidence explains how or why this accumulation occurs. METHODS Quantitative PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunostaining, and immunofluorescence analyses were performed using antibodies specific to the related antigens and receptors. RESULTS In deep esophageal biopsies of EoE patients, eosinophils and mast cells accumulate adjacent to nerve cell-derived VIP in each esophageal segment. qRT-PCR analysis revealed five- to sixfold increases in expression levels of VIP, CRTH2, and VAPC2 receptors and proteins in human blood- and tissue-accumulated eosinophils and mast cells. We also observed a significant correlation between mRNA CRTH2 levels and eosinophil- and nerve cell-derived VIPs in human EoE (p < 0.05). We provide evidence that eosinophil and mast cell deficiency following CRTH2 antagonist treatment improves motility dysfunction in a chronic DOX-inducible CC10-IL-13 murine model of experimental EoE. CONCLUSIONS CRTH2 antagonist treatment is a novel therapeutic strategy for inflammatory cell-induced esophageal motility dysfunction in IL-13-induced chronic experimental EoE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eosinophilic gastritis/gastroenteritis (EoG/EoGE) are rare disorders with pathologic gastric and/or small intestinal eosinophilia lacking an approved therapy. An allergic mechanism is postulated but underexplored mechanistically and therapeutically. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the effectiveness of a food allergen-free diet (elemental formula) in controlling gastrointestinal eosinophilia in adult EoG/EoGE. METHODS Adults aged 18 to 65 years with histologically active EoG/EoGE (≥30 eosinophils per high-power field) in the stomach and/or duodenum and gastrointestinal symptoms within the month preceding enrollment were prospectively enrolled onto a single-arm clinical trial to receive elemental formula for 6 consecutive weeks. The primary end point was percentage of participants with complete histologic remission (<30 eosinophils per high-power field in both stomach and duodenum). Exploratory outcomes were improvement in symptoms, endoscopy results, blood eosinophilia, quality of life, Physician Global Assessment score, and EoG-relevant gastric transcriptome and microbiome. RESULTS Fifteen adults (47% male, average age 37.7 years, average symptom duration 8.8 years) completed the trial. Multi-gastrointestinal segment involvement affected 87%. All subjects had complete histologic remission in the stomach (P = .002) and duodenum (P = .001). Scores improved in overall PhGA (P = .002); EGREFS (P = .003); EGDP (P = .002); SODA pain intensity (P = .044), non-pain (P = .039), and satisfaction (P = .0024); and PROMIS depression (P = .0078) and fatigue (P = .04). Food reintroduction reversed these improvements. The intervention was well tolerated in 14 subjects, with 1 serious adverse event reported in 1 subject. CONCLUSION An amino acid-based elemental diet improves histologic, endoscopic, symptomatic, quality-of-life, and molecular parameters of EoG/EoGE; these findings and disease recurrence with food trigger reintroduction support a dominant role for food allergens in disease pathogenesis. Abstract
Eosinophilic enteritis is a rare subset of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. It typically presents with chronic symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and ascites. However, the clinical presentation can vary due to acute flare-ups. Here, we present a case of eosinophilic enteritis in a young female patient with intractable vomiting and diarrhea, mimicking acute gastroenteritis in the absence of other gastrointestinal symptoms. This case illustrates the challenge of diagnosing acute and diverse presentations of eosinophilic enteritis. It also highlights the importance of promptly treating and confirming the diagnosis through urgent tissue histopathology in adolescents with unexplained vomiting and diarrhea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of eosinophilic esophagitis involves immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) deposition. However, the relationship between IgG4 and eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is unclear. AIMS To investigate gastrointestinal deposition of IgG4 in EGE. METHODS Biopsies of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine were evaluated in patients with and without EGE. Immunohistochemical staining for IgG4 was performed, and the proportions of the stained areas were compared. Sera from patients with EGE were assayed for food-specific IgG4, including egg white, wheat, rice, soy, and cow milk. RESULTS Seventeen patients were included in this study (EGE group, n = 10; control group, n = 7). Compared with the control group, the proportion of IgG4-stained area in the EGE group was approximately threefold higher (40.2% [32.3-49.5]) vs. 12.1% [4.0-21.9], p = 0.014) in the esophagus, fivefold higher in the stomach (17.3% [11.1-26.2] vs. 3.7% [1.5-5.2], p = 0.014), and sixfold higher in the small intestine (28.0% [15.0-33.2] vs. 4.5% [2.6-9.8], p = 0.019). There was no significant association between the proportion of IgG4-stained area and the number of infiltrating eosinophils. Serum egg white-specific IgG4 levels were correlated with the proportion of IgG4-stained areas in the small intestine (R = 0.7, p = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS IgG4 accumulated within the gastrointestinal mucosa in EGE. The positive correlation between serum egg white-specific IgG4 levels and the proportion of IgG4-stained areas in the small intestine suggests a role for IgG4 in the disease pathophysiology.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Eosinophilic gastritis and eosinophilic enteritis (EoG/EoN) are associated with a substantial clinical burden. However, limited information is available regarding the economic burden of EoG/EoN. This study was conducted to compare healthcare resource use (HRU) and costs among patients with EoG/EoN versus without EoG/EoN in the USA. METHODS Administrative claims data from the IBM MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters (CCAE) and Medicare Supplemental and Coordination of Benefits Databases (2009-2019) was used to identify two cohorts of patients. Patients without EoG/EoN were matched 3:1 to patients with EoG/EoN on sex, year of birth, and healthcare plan type. Study measures included demographic characteristics, select comorbidities, all-cause HRU, and costs. Comparisons were made over a 1-year period following EoG/EoN diagnosis for patients with EoG/EoN and an eligible date for patients without EoG/EoN. RESULTS A total of 2219 patients with EoG/EoN and 6657 patients without EoG/EoN were analyzed. Significantly higher proportions of patients with EoG/EoN versus without EoG/EoN had comorbid conditions. Rates of all-cause HRU were significantly higher among patients with EoG/EoN versus patients without EoG/EoN (adjusted rate ratio [95% confidence interval]: inpatient visits, 6.26 [5.26, 7.46]; outpatient visits, 1.17 [1.16, 1.19]; emergency department visits, 2.11 [1.98, 2.25]; all p < 0.001). Patients with EoG/EoN incurred significantly higher costs versus patients without EoG/EoN (adjusted mean cost difference $31,180; p < 0.001). Cost differences were largely due to outpatient (adjusted mean cost difference $14,018; p < 0.001) and inpatient (adjusted mean cost difference $11,224; p < 0.001) costs. CONCLUSION The economic burden associated with EoG/EoN is substantial, with patients with EoG/EoN having a higher rate of HRU and incurring $31,180 more than patients without EoG/EoN on average. Most of the cost difference was attributable to outpatient and inpatient costs. Cost-saving strategies to lower the burden of illness in this patient population are needed.

Abstract
Non-IgE-mediated food allergies are a group of disorders characterized by subacute or chronic inflammatory processes in the gut. Unlike IgE mediated food allergies that may result in multi-organ system anaphylaxis, the non-IgE mediated food allergies primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract. This review outlines the clinical manifestations, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management of non-IgE-mediated food allergies. An updated literature search of selected non-IgE-mediated food allergies was conducted for this review using PubMed database to the current year (2021). Reviewed disorders include food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), food-protein enteropathy (FPE), food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP), and eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) such as eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). While extensive gains have been made in understanding FPIES, FPIAP, FPE, and EoE, more information is needed on the pathophysiology of these food allergies. Similarities among them include involvement of innate immunity, T-lymphocyte processes, alteration of the intestinal lumen at the cellular level with the appearance of inflammatory cells and associated histologic changes, and specific cytokine profiles suggesting food-specific, T-cell, and immune-mediated responses. While FPIES and FPIAP typically resolve in early childhood, EGIDs typically do not. Emerging new therapies for EoE offer promise of additional treatment options. Further studies identifying the immunopathogenesis, associated biomarkers, and mechanisms of tolerance are needed to inform prevention, diagnosis and management.

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Eosinophilic Colitis in Patients With Cancer. Am J Clin Oncol 2021; 44:395-401. Abstract
BACKGROUND Eosinophilic colitis (EoC) is a rare form of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease characterized by diffuse eosinophilic infiltration in the deep lamina propria of colonic mucosa. The pathophysiology is unclear, but EoC has been associated with multiple known risk factors. AIM The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical characteristics and disease course of patients with EoC at a major cancer center. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed colonic samples obtained between January 2000 and December 2018 from our institutional database and included cases with significant colonic eosinophilia. Baseline clinical data and EoC-related clinical course and outcomes were documented. RESULTS Forty-one patients were included. One fourth had coexisting autoimmune conditions. Seventy-eight percent had a cancer diagnosis. Half the patients received chemotherapy, with a median duration of 180 days between chemotherapy and EoC onset. Symptoms were present in 76% of patients. Diarrhea was more prevalent in patients who received chemotherapy (85% vs. 42%). Median duration of EoC symptoms was 30 days in patients with cancer and 240 days in those without cancer (P=0.03). Most patients (88%) had normal colonoscopy findings. Fifteen percent of patients required hospitalization. All-cause mortality was 37%, mostly related to underlying malignancy and organ failure. CONCLUSIONS EoC in cancer patients appears to have more diarrhea-predominant symptoms, particularly in patients receiving chemotherapy, but a shorter disease duration compared with patients without cancer. Hospitalization can be required for serious cases. Treatment may be reserved for patients requiring symptom management, as most patients with EoC have good clinical outcomes regardless of treatment.

Abstract
Adverse food reactions include immune-mediated food allergies and non-immune-mediated intolerances. However, this distinction and the involvement of different pathogenetic mechanisms are often confused. Furthermore, there is a discrepancy between the perceived vs. actual prevalence of immune-mediated food allergies and non-immune reactions to food that are extremely common. The risk of an inappropriate approach to their correct identification can lead to inappropriate diets with severe nutritional deficiencies. This narrative review provides an outline of the pathophysiologic and clinical features of immune and non-immune adverse reactions to food-along with general diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Special emphasis is placed on specific nutritional concerns for each of these conditions from the combined point of view of gastroenterology and immunology, in an attempt to offer a useful tool to practicing physicians in discriminating these diverging disease entities and planning their correct management. We conclude that a correct diagnostic approach and dietary control of both immune- and non-immune-mediated food-induced diseases might minimize the nutritional gaps in these patients, thus helping to improve their quality of life and reduce the economic costs of their management.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall. There have been limited studies of eosinophilic infiltration involving the ampulla. We present a 70-year-old woman with a history of asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis, and eosinophilic sinusitis, who underwent work up for postprandial abdominal pain and abnormal liver function tests. The patient had various imaging studies done, including computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Dilated extrahepatic bile duct with distal tapering towards the ampulla was noted on MRCP and afterwards on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) revealed an inflamed major ampulla with benign papillary stenosis. The patient was treated with sphincterotomy, sphincteroplasty/dilation of distal common bile duct, and placement of an 11.5 Fr × 7 cm plastic stent into the bile duct. Additionally, she was started on prednisone, which was gradually tapered down. The patient demonstrated significant improvement with systemic steroid therapy. Liver function tests (LFTs) completely normalized after ERCP. Ampullitis leading to papillary stenosis secondary to eosinophilic infiltration of the major papilla is a rare manifestation of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs). Early diagnosis would lead to appropriate medical and endoscopic management.

Abstract
Eosinophilic ascites is a manifestation of serosal eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease. We present a 44-year-old male with low serum ascites albumin gradient with high eosinophil count and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen showing circumferential wall thickening of the esophagus, mid to distal ileal loops, and ascending colon. The patient was managed with tablet prednisolone 20 mg twice daily for two weeks, then gradual tapering over one month. The patient responded to treatment. Awareness of the condition, timely diagnosis, and early treatment carries excellent responses.

Abstract
Two months ago, a 9-year-old boy experienced intermittent abdominal pain regardless of
food intake, without diarrhea, bloody stool, or nausea. Blood test results revealed a
peripheral blood eosinophil count of 660 cells /µL, which was marginally elevated, without
inflammatory reaction, occult blood, or enteric pathogens. The intestinal mucosa from the
terminal ileum to the rectum was endoscopically normal, but mucosal biopsy revealed
eosinophilic infiltration of the terminal ileum and whole colon with ≥20 eosinophils/high
power field (HPF). Subsequent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed normal endoscopic
mucosa from the esophagus to the second part of the duodenum, but mucosal biopsy showed an
eosinophil infiltration of ≥20 eosinophils/HPF. Based on the above findings, he was
diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE). The cause of EGE and mechanisms of
eosinophil infiltration have yet to be fully elucidated. For these nonspecific abdominal
symptoms, evidence of eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal mucosa,
specifically 20 eosinophils/HPF in each intestinal mucosa, is required for the definitive
diagnosis of EGE. Even if only persistent abdominal pain develops, EGE diagnosis should be
confirmed with the analysis of mucosal biopsy in addition to the review of allergic
disease history and peripheral blood eosinophil counts.

Abstract
RATIONALE Eosinphilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by eosinophilic infiltration with various manifestations. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by an endoscopic biopsy, which is considered a safe and routine procedure for the majority. PATIENT CONCERNS We report a 54-year-old male who was presented with intermittent periumbilical pain and melena, and only revealed verrucous gastritis by endoscopy. DIAGNOSES The patient's condition worsened two days after the endoscopic biopsy, and another endoscopy found hematoma and ulcers in upper gastrointestinal tract. He was diagnosed with EG by the pathological analysis of biopsy specimen. INTERVENTIONS Oral methylprednisolone and Montelukast were prescribed. OUTCOMES The patient got remission after initiation of the treatment. LESSONS This case highlights an extremely rare but potentially severe complication of endoscopic biopsies in patients with EG. Physicians should be cautious with hematoma or ulceration, and consider it in such patients who undergo this procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the eosinophilic response in intestinal mucosa of horses with intestinal ischemia and reperfusion or with strangulation of the jejunum or colon. SAMPLE Mucosal samples from horses with naturally occurring strangulation (n = 24 horses) or distention (n = 6) of the jejunum or colon (11), with experimentally induced ischemia and reperfusion of the jejunum (6) or colon (15), or that were euthanized for reasons other than gastrointestinal tract disease (13). PROCEDURES Mucosal samples were collected and grouped by type of intestinal injury. Slides were stained with Luna eosinophil stain and histologically examined to determine eosinophil accumulation and distribution. Number of eosinophils per mm(2) of mucosa was calculated as a measure of eosinophil accumulation. Additionally, mucosa was categorized into 5 regions; the percentage of eosinophils in each of the 5 regions, relative to the total eosinophil count in all regions, was determined. RESULTS Eosinophil migration toward and onto the luminal surface was evident in tissues after ischemia and reperfusion and after naturally occurring strangulating disease of the jejunum and colon, as indicated by a decrease in the number of eosinophils near the muscularis mucosa and an increase in the number of eosinophils on or near the luminal surface. Ischemia alone did not change eosinophil distribution in the jejunum or colon. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Eosinophils responded to mucosal damage evoked by ischemia and reperfusion by migration toward and onto the luminal surface. This migration could represent an important component of the inflammatory response to injury in equine gastrointestinal mucosa.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders are a series of diseases that include eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, eosinophilic enteritis, and eosinophilic colitis. Among these disorders, eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an uncommon and heterogeneous disease characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract in the absence of secondary causes, presenting with a variety of gastrointestinal manifestations. Up to now, epidemiology and pathophysiology of eosinophilic gastroenteritis are still unclear. Based on clinical manifestations and depth of eosinophilic infiltration into the gastrointestinal tract wall, eosinophilic gastroenteritis is classified into three different patterns including predominantly mucosal pattern, predominantly muscular pattern, and predominantly serosal pattern. For diagnosing eosinophilic gastroenteritis, it is necessary for clinicians to have a high degree of clinical suspicion. In addition to the gastrointestinal symptoms, other evidences such as laboratory results, radiological findings and endoscopy can also provide important diagnostic evidences for eosinophilic gastroenteritis. And these indirect pieces of information together with histological results will lead to a definitive diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis. To avoid specific allergen, dietary treatments can be considered as initial treatment strategy before drug treatment. Corticosteroids are the main medication for eosinophilic gastroenteritis and have a dramatic therapeutic efficacy. Yet other medications need to further verify their effects in clinical practice, and surgery should be avoided as far as possible.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, including eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroenteritis, and colitis, refer to a spectrum of clinical diseases that present with variable degrees of infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract by eosinophils in the absence of other known causes of tissue eosinophilia. Clinical symptoms and laboratory findings are usually non-specific and may or may not be accompanied by peripheral blood eosinophilia. The extent of eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall varies from mucosal to transmural and serosal involvement. Diagnosis requires presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, demonstration of gastrointestinal eosinophilia by biopsy, and exclusion of other known causes of tissue eosinophilia. Many studies have pointed toward the eosinophil as the major offender; however, the exact functional role of the eosinophil in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders remains unclear. The roles of T-helper-2 cytokines and other mediators, such as eotaxin-1 and interleukin-5, have gained significant importance in the pathobiology of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. Current understanding of treatment is based on case reports and a few case series, as there is a lack of large prospective studies. Steroids are currently the mainstay of therapy, but the roles of other drugs such as leukotriene inhibitors, mast cell stabilizers, interleukin-5 inhibitors, and anti-immunoglobulin E, along with other targets in the immune pathway, are currently being explored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EOGE) is a rare idiopathic disease characterized by eosinophil-predominant inflammation of the stomach and/or intestines. Our aims are to determine the epidemiology, clinical features and outcomes of EOGE cases in a tertiary-care hospital. METHODS Retrospective cohort study of patients with gastrointestinal eosinophilic infiltration from 2004 through 2014. All relevant specimens were reviewed by an expert pathologist. Significant eosinophilic infiltrate was defined as >25 eosinophils/HPF in the stomach or small intestine and >50 eosinophils/HPF in the colon. RESULTS Three hundred and sixty-one charts were reviewed and 13 EOGE cases were identified, including nine adults and four pediatric cases. The majority (78 %) of adult cases were females. Clinical presentation was variable; most patients (62 %) had abdominal pain, followed by diarrhea (31 %) and nausea/vomiting (31 %). Atopy and food allergies were present in 54 and 38 % of patients, respectively. Weight loss and failure to thrive were present only in pediatric cases (50 vs 0 %; P = .01). Most EOGE cases (69 %) had peripheral eosinophilia, which was more prominent in patients with ascites compared to patients without ascites (37.3 ± 25.4 vs 9.3 ± 5.4 %; P = .01). Among patients who had long-term follow-up; 30 % had spontaneous remission, 60 % responded to steroids and/or restriction diet, and 10 % had refractory disease. CONCLUSION EOGE is an underdiagnosed condition. In contrast to eosinophilic esophagitis; the disease might be female-predominant in adults. High index of clinical suspicion is required for diagnosis. Further studies about the long-term outcomes and the efficacy of restriction diet in adult patients are required.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical features and outcome of eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) in children. METHODS Our study enrolled 24 children who were diagnosed with EGE from 1993 to 2014 at the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Children's Hospital. The patients' clinical manifestations, treatments, and outcomes were reviewed from the medical records. RESULTS The mean age at diagnosis was 5.3 years. Most patients had gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea (54.2%) and abdominal pain (45.8%). Peripheral eosinophilia was present in 91.7% of the patients. Thirteen patients (54.2%) showed anemia, and 15 patients (62.5%) had hypoalbuminemia. EGE was classified as mucosal, subserosal, or muscular in 75.0%, 20.8%, and 4.2% of cases, respectively. Three patients showed gastroduodenal ulcers upon endoscopic analysis. A history of allergy was reported in 13 patients, including atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Five patients (20.8%) improved with food restrictions. Among the 19 patients treated with steroids, 11 (57.9%) discontinued steroid treatment without subsequent relapse, 4 (21.1%) relapsed after ceasing steroid treatment, and 4 (21.1%) showed no response to steroids. Two patients who were resistant to steroids underwent therapeutic surgery. The presence of gastroduodenal ulcers was significantly associated with relapse and steroid resistance. CONCLUSION A high suspicion of EGE is warranted when children have nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms and peripheral eosinophilia. Most patients improved with food restrictions or steroid treatment, although one-third of patients showed a relapse or steroid resistance.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown aetiology, characterised by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall with various gastrointestinal manifestations. Clinical presentation and radiological findings are non-specific and there is an overlap with more frequent childhood diseases requiring a high degree of clinical suspicion for accurate diagnosis. We describe a 2-month-old boy with prolonged diarrhoea, vomiting and food refusal. Diagnosis was settled by histology. The treatment with elemental diet was successful, with clinical resolution and catch-up growth.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are food allergen-induced allergic gastrointestinal disorders, characterized by accumulation of highly induced eosinophils in different segments of gastrointestinal tract along with eosinophil microabssess and extracellular eosinophilic granules in the epithelial layer. EGID are both IgE- and cell-mediated group of diseases that include eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), eosinophilic gastritis (EG), eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) and eosinophilic colitis (EC). Despite the increased incidences and considerable progress made in understanding EGID pathogenesis. The mechanism is still not well understood. It has been shown that IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-15, IL-18, eotaxin-1, eotaxin-2 and eotaxin-3 play a critical role in EGID pathogenesis. Currently, the only criterion for diagnosing EoE, EGE and EC are repetitive endoscopic and histopathological evaluation of biopsies along with other clinical characteristics/manifestations. Antigen elimination and corticosteroid therapies are the most effective therapies currently in practice for the treatment of EGID. The cytokines (anti-IL-5 and anti-IL-13) therapy trials were not very successful in case of EoE. Most recently, a clinical trial using anti-IL-13 reported only 60% reduced esophageal eosinophilia without achieving primary endpoint. This clinical finding is not surprising and is in accordance with our earlier report indicating that IL-13 is not critical in the initiation of EoE. Notably, EGID still has no reliable noninvasive diagnostic biomarkers. Hence, there is a great necessity to identify novel noninvasive diagnostic biomarkers that can easily diagnose EGID and provide an effective therapy. Now, the attention is required to target cell types like iNKT cells that produce eosinophil active cytokines and is found induced in the pathogenesis of both experimental and human EoE. iNKT cell neutralization is shown to protect allergen-induced EoE in experimental model. In this review, we have discussed the key elements that are critical in the disease initiation, progression, pathogenesis and important for future diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for EGID.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a disorder characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall and various gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of EGE in infants and children. A total of 22 patients were diagnosed with histologic EGE (hEGE) or possible EGE (pEGE). Serum specific IgE levels, peripheral eosinophil counts, and endoscopic biopsies were carried out. In the hEGE group (n = 13), initial symptoms included hematemesis, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Three of the subjects had normal endoscopic findings. Eight patients were categorized into the infant group and 5 into the child group. All patients in the infant group showed clinical improvement after switching from cow's milk feeding to special formula or breast feeding. The infant group showed a higher eosinophil count in the gastric mucosal biopsy than the child group. In the pEGE group (n = 9) initial symptoms included hematemesis, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Seven patients in this group showed a good response to treatment with restriction of the suspected foods and/or the administration of ketotifen. Both hEGE and pEGE groups showed clinical improvement after restriction of suspected foods in the majority of cases and also showed a similar clinical course. EGE should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with chronic abdominal pain, vomiting, and hematemesis of unknown cause. The infant group may have a better prognosis than the child group if treated properly.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is an uncommon disease characterised by eosinophilic infiltration in the gastrointestinal tract. EGE may involve more than one layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical features depend on the layer and location which is involved. We report an unusual case of eosinophilic ascites associated with antinuclear antibody positivity, which is an unusual variety of serosal form of EGE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Allergic colitis shows overlap with classic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Clinically, allergic colitis is associated with dysmotility and abdominal pain, and mucosal eosinophilia is characteristic. We thus aimed to characterise mucosal changes in children with allergic colitis compared with normal tissue and classic IBD, focusing on potential interaction between eosinophils and mast cells with enteric neurones. METHODS A total of 15 children with allergic colitis, 10 with Crohn disease (CD), 10 with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 10 histologically normal controls were studied. Mucosal biopsies were stained for CD3 T cells, Ki-67, eotaxin-1, and eotaxin-2. Eotaxin-2, IgE, and tryptase were localised compared with mucosal nerves, using neuronal markers neurofilament protein, neuron-specific enolase, and nerve growth factor receptor. RESULTS Overall inflammation was greater in patients with CD and UC than in patients with allergic colitis. CD3 T-cell density was increased in patients with allergic colitis, similar to that in patients with CD but lower than in patients with UC, whereas eosinophil density was higher than in all other groups. Eotaxin-1 and -2 were localised to basolateral crypt epithelium in all specimens, with eotaxin-1+ lamina propria cells found in all of the colitis groups. Eotaxin-2+ intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) density was significantly higher in allergic colitis specimens than in all other groups. Mast cell degranulation was strikingly increased in patients with allergic colitis (12/15) compared with that in patients with UC (1/10) and CD (0/1). Tryptase and IgE colocalised on enteric neurons in patients with allergic colitis but rarely in patients with IBD. CONCLUSIONS Eotaxin-2+ IELs may contribute to the periepithelial eosinophil accumulation characteristic of allergic colitis. The colocalisation of IgE and tryptase with mucosal enteric nerves is likely to promote the dysmotility and visceral hyperalgesia classically seen in allergic gastrointestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) represents one member within the spectrum of diseases collectively referred to as eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, which includes eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), gastritis, enteritis, and colitis. EGE is less common than EoE and involves a different site of disease but otherwise shares many common features with EoE. The clinical manifestations of EGE are protean and can vary from nausea and vomiting to protein-losing enteropathy or even bowel obstruction requiring surgery. Although systemic corticosteroids are an effective treatment for EGE, their use results in substantial corticosteroid toxicity. Accordingly, there is a great need for improved therapies for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Chronic abdominal pain is the most common indication for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in children. However, little is known about the accuracy of EGD-based diagnosis or the outcomes of the patients who undergo this procedure. We examined the diagnostic yield of EGD and short-term outcomes of children who underwent this procedure for chronic abdominal pain. METHODS We conducted a prospective study of 290 children (4-18 years old; mean age, 11.9 ± 3.5 years; 93 girls) who underwent EGD for the primary indication of chronic abdominal pain (216 with at least 1 alarm feature) at a US pediatric gastroenterology referral center. We collected data on demographic features (age, sex), clinical characteristics (alarm features, Rome III criteria), and EGD results for each patient. All subjects with diagnostic lesions were followed for at least 1 year after EGD to determine short-term outcomes. RESULTS Overall, EGD provided an accurate diagnosis for 109 children (38%). Diagnoses included esophagitis (21.0%), eosinophilic gastroenteritis (4.1%), eosinophilic esophagitis (3.8%), Helicobacter pylori infection (2.0%), celiac disease (0.6%), and Crohn's disease (0.4%). Short-term outcomes were available for 81% of patients with diagnostic findings, and medical therapy was effective in approximately 67% of these children. CONCLUSIONS EGD is valuable for the diagnosis of children with abdominal pain, with a 38% diagnostic yield. EGD identified disorders for which medical therapy was effective in 67% of children during the year after diagnosis.

Abstract
Immunosuppression during the post-transplantation period has led to dramatic outcome improvements in PLTR patients. There have been reports describing the development of food allergies and an increased predilection for development of EGI in PLTR. We aimed to identify the clinical, endoscopic and histologic features of EGI in PLTR patients. In this retrospective case series we analyzed medical record of all PLTR who underwent EGD and/or colonoscopy at our institution from 2000 to 2006. From 2000 to 2006, 32 PLTR patients underwent endoscopic evaluation. Seventeen (53%) of 32 patients were diagnosed with EGI. Endoscopic abnormalities were seen in the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine in 11 (65%), 11 (65%), and four (24%) patients, respectively. Eosinophilic inflammation was seen in the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine in 13 (76%), 10 (59%), and five (29%) patients, respectively. Nine of 17 patients underwent colonoscopy and endoscopic abnormalities were seen in four (44%) patients. Five patients (56%) had eosinophilic inflammation. In conclusion, we have characterized the clinical, endoscopic, and histologic features of EGI. Histologic and endoscopic examination reveals that, when present, EGI is often found at multiple segments along the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
Several studies have shown that IL-13 is induced in the esophageal biopsies of EoE patients and promotes esophageal eosinophilia in mice following an IL-13 challenge. However, the role of IL-13 has not been clearly investigated in allergen-induced EoE. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that IL-13 is required in allergen-induced EoE. Mice deficient in IL-13, STAT (signal transducer and activator of transcription)6 and both IL-4/IL-13 genes with their respective controls were challenged with aspergillus extract and IL-5 gene-deficient with their control were challenged with recombinant IL-13, intranasally The lung and esophageal eosinophils, mast cells and collagen accumulation were examined. Herein, we report that intranasal delivery of IL-13 promotes IL-5 dependent esophageal eosinophilia. However, allergen-induced EoE is not impaired in the IL-13 gene-deficient mice. In addition, wild type and IL-13 gene-deficient mice demonstrated a comparable level of mast cells and collagen accumulation in the esophagus following allergen-induced experimental EoE. Similarly, we found that esophageal eosinophilia in IL-4/IL-13 double gene-deficient and STAT6 gene-deficient mice were also not reduced following allergen-induced experimental EoE. In contrast, lung eosinophilia was significantly reduced in mice deficient in IL-13, both IL-4/IL-13 and STAT6 genes following allergen challenge. In conclusion, our data establish that allergen-induced EoE pathogenesis is independent of IL-13; whereas, IL-13 is required for allergen-induced lung eosinophilia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic colitis (AC) is an inflammatory condition characterized by eosinophils infiltrating the colonic wall. It can be a benign and/or severe illness among gastrointestinal diseases in infants. METHODS We report five infants who, since January 2009, in whom AC under fibrotic endoscopic examinations has been diagnosed. The criterion for histopathologic diagnosis of AC in this study was five or more eosinophils per high-power field. Patients' clinical symptoms, pathologic findings, and immunologic studies, such as specific antibodies against component of cow's milk protein, were compared with those of allergic children without AC and those of nonatopic control children. RESULTS Histopathologic examinations of biopsy specimens revealed acute inflammation with characteristic eosinophilic infiltration of lamina propria (5-15 eosinophils per high-power field) in all five patients. They all had strongly positive skin prick tests against milk protein, which were not correlated with in vitro allergen-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels. In contrast, there were significantly higher levels of IgE antibodies, and lower specific IgG4 and IgA levels to components and whole milk proteins in AC, as compared to control children without AC. CONCLUSION Endoscopic biopsy specimens of intestine confirm the diagnosis of AC. However, allergen skin prick test and IgE antibody to milk protein components also provide helpful diagnostic tools for this rare disease in children.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is characterized by dense eosinophilic inflammation of one or several digestive tract sections. The symptoms include abdominal pain, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea. Biopsy samples taken during endoscopic examination allows the diagnosis of the disease. An infiltration of >30 eosinophils per high-power field in at least five high-power fields, exhibiting signs of eosinophilic degranulation and extending to the muscularis mucosa or submucosa are all histological indications of EGE. EGE is traditionally classified into three forms depending on the depth of inflammation in the wall (mucosal, muscular or serosal). This, together with the digestive tract segments involved, determines the clinical presentation. The natural history of EGE includes three different evolutionary patterns, since patients may suffer a single outbreak, a recurrent course or even chronic disease. Corticosteroids are the most frequently used therapy for EGE; dietary treatments should be also considered. Surgery has been limited to solving obstruction and small bowel perforation.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rare disease characterized by eosinophilic infiltration and peripheral eosinophilia. It can be seen anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. It is diagnosed in the biopsies taken during endoscopic examination to the patients with abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea. A 40-year-old woman was admitted with abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea. She has not any disease, food, pollen, or drug allergy in her medical history. Leukocyte: 19,400/mm3 (neutrophil: 19.9%, eosinophil: 57.4%, lymphocyte: 16.5%), platelet: 281,000/ mm3, immunoglobulin E: 1721 IU/mL (normal range: 20–100 IU/mL) was counted in her blood examination. The duodenal biopsy was reported as EGE. We applied methylprednisolone 20 mg/day. With this treatment, the patient's symptoms regressed. In this article we present a case of chronic diarrhea diagnosed EGE. The first step in diagnosing is suspecting EGE. It should be borne in mind in patients with chronic diarrhea.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) are a progressively more frequent diverse group of intestinal diseases. The intention of this paper is to present the newest developments in the care of patients with EGIDs and to sum up a rising literature defining the clinical features and mechanistic elements of eosinophils and their intricate associations with the gastrointestinal tract. Clinicians ought to stay sensitive to EGIDs as a diagnostic likelihood for patients with general gastrointestinal symptoms. Further research is warranted to establish various methods leading to dysfunction coupled with eosinophilic gastrointestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Eosinophilic enteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall to a variable depth and symptoms associated with gastrointestinal tract depending upon the predominant layer involved. Diagnosis of eosinophilic enteritis requires a high index of suspicion and exclusion of various disorders that are associated with peripheral eosinophilia. We report a case of unusual presentation of eosinophilic enteritis clinically presenting as intestinal obstruction due to multiple strictures of the small bowel in an adult male.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical features and treatment responses in pediatric patients with eosinophilic gastroenteritis are rarely reported. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical manifestations and outcome of eosinophilic gastroenteritis in children of Asian background. METHODS Between 1997 and 2009, 14 Taiwanese patients (nine boys and five girls), with median age of 8.3 years (range, 1.4-14.3 years), were diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, peripheral eosinophilia, and a histology-proved biopsy. The clinical data and responses to medical treatment were analyzed. RESULTS Initial symptoms included abdominal pain (43%), anemia (36%), hypoalbuminemia (14%), recurrent vomiting (7%), bloody stool (7%), and growth failure (7%). Peripheral eosinophilia was present in 10 patients (71.4%) and positive stool occult blood in seven patients (50%). Endoscopic examination revealed ulcer disease in four patients (28.6%). The treatment included steroid alone, montelukast alone, steroid+montelukast, and steroid+montelukast+ketotifen. Among the patients treated with steroid, two (two of nine, 22%) had successfully tapered off steroid without recurring symptoms. Three patients (three of nine, 33%) had relapses after discontinuing steroid, three (three of nine, 33%) still required low-dose steroid, and one lost to follow-up. There was no relapse in the four patients treated with montelukast alone. CONCLUSIONS A high percentage of patients presented with gross or occult gastrointestinal bleeding with or without abdominal pain. Endoscopic biopsy is necessary for diagnosis. Steroid was the mainstay treatment for active diseases; montelukast was also effective for the disease or as a maintenance therapy in this study.

Abstract
Eosinophilic digestive disease (EDD) includes a broad spectrum of clinical presentations due to eosinophilic inflammation involving anywhere from the esophagus to the rectum. The heterogeneity in the clinical presentations of EDD is determined by the site and depth of eosinophilic infiltration. The sites of inflammation determine the nomenclature for EDD. The most well characterized of these, eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG), and eosinophilic colitis or enterocolitis. While the depth of esosinophilic infiltration through the three main layers (mucosa, musculosa and serosa) determines the prominent clinical manifestation. The recent advances in gastrointestinal endoscopy and the increasing awareness and diagnosis of EDD, in my viewpoint, can be of help to add to our understanding of the heterogeneous clinical syndrome under the broad title bronchial asthma. Here I present my viewpoint that EDD and the allergic bronchial asthma can be regarded as two clinical expressions of one disease in two different but related anatomical systems.

Abstract
The rates of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders appear to be increasing. The most common of these is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) which is a clinicopathologic condition consisting of characteristic symptoms and endoscopic features accompanied by a pan-esophageal, acid resistant epithelial eosinophilia of greater than equal to 15 per high power field. Typical symptoms include dysphagia and abdominal pain. Typical endoscopic features include pallor, plaques, furrows, concentric rings. Complications include food impactions and strictures. EoE resolution with food elimination diets provides evidence that EoE is a food-antigen driven process. In vitro and microarray studies have identified specific immunologic factors underlying EoE pathogenesis. Other gastrointestinal manifestations of food intolerances/allergy include food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome.

Abstract
Intense infiltration of gastrointestinal and colonic mucosa with eosinophils or acidophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a relatively uncommon picture for a pathologist endoscopist especially outside the pediatric age group and is highly suggestive of an ongoing chronic inflammatory process. Existing literature projected a hypothetical association with allergy but the exact pathophysiology is still unknown. Association with malabsorption, protein losing enteropathy, and refractory ulcers with gastrointestinal bleeding makes the clinical presentation more complicated. We present a unique case of diarrhea and abdominal pain in the clinical presentation with associated peripheral eosinophilia, asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The patient's symptoms abated after initiation of budesonide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Some patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) (>15 eosinophils/high-power field on esophageal mucosal biopsies and lack of response to acid suppression and/or normal pH probe study) demonstrate incidental eosinophilic inflammation of the gastric mucosa. It is unclear whether patients with EE and normal gastric biopsies (EE-N) are phenotypically different from patients with EE and gastric mucosal abnormalities (EE-A) (ie, >10 eos/hpf on gastric biopsies). The aim of the study was to compare the clinical features and response to therapy among patients with EE-N and EE-A. PATIENTS AND METHODS Medical records of all of the EE-A and a random group of patients with EE-N diagnosed during an 8-year period were reviewed. A subgroup analysis of patients treated with swallowed fluticasone with a repeat esophagogastroduodenoscopy within 6 months of starting therapy was also performed. RESULTS During the study period, 41 patients had EE-A. When compared to 50 random patients with EE-N, no clinical differences were noted, including sex, age, presenting symptoms, esophageal histology, and atopy history. Eleven (27%) of the 41 EE-A and 14 (28%) of the 50 EE-N patients were treated with swallowed fluticasone, and the response was similar among the groups. The mean esophageal eosinophils/high-power field among the EE-A group dropped from 47 to 8 compared with a 46 to 7 drop among the EE-N group treated with fluticasone therapy (P = 0.91). In 9 (82%) of the 11 patients with EE-A treated with fluticasone, there was resolution (7 of 9) or significant improvement (2 of 9) of gastric eosinophilia. CONCLUSIONS Patients with EE-A and EE-N have similar clinical presentations. Incidental gastric inflammation does not predict a worse response of esophageal inflammation to fluticasone and should not exclude its use in patients with EE-A. In fact, gastric inflammation responded to swallowed fluticasone in the majority of patients with EE-A. This observation should foster further investigation into pathogenesis of EE and presumed esophagogastric inflammatory axis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a rare disorder characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Despite the increasing prevalence of eosinophilic GI disorders, the epidemiology of EG has not been well studied. We evaluated the clinical spectrum of EG. METHODS We reviewed data from patients diagnosed with EG, allergic gastroenteropathy, or eosinophilia and referred to gastroenterologists from 1987 to 2007 (n = 59; 52 with mucosal, 3 with muscularis, and 4 with subserosal disease). The study included subjects diagnosed with EG and those with a history that suggested EG, defined by GI symptoms; eosinophilic infiltration of the GI tract, eosinophilic ascites, or characteristic radiographic findings with eosinophilia; and no parasitic or extraintestinal disease. Findings were compared with those from patients with unexplained GI symptoms and peripheral eosinophilia (n = 11). RESULTS Associations between clinical variables and EG subgroups did not differ between patients with EG and peripheral eosinophilia. Fifty percent of patients with EG who underwent food allergy testing had a positive test result; only 32% of those with EG who underwent radiographic imaging had positive test results. Patients with EG received steroid therapy; 75% with mucosal, 67% with muscle, and 100% with subserosal disease received prednisone. Eighty-eight percent of patients who received only steroids (mean follow-up period, 7 mo) and 94% of patients who received steroids in combination with another therapy (mean follow-up period, 4 mo) had improved or resolved disease. CONCLUSIONS Unlike eosinophilic esophagitis, EG is rare. Results from this large study suggest that EG disease type has shifted toward that of the mucosal layer.

Abstract
We report a case of eosinophilic enteritis involving the proximal small bowel, a relatively rare entity, presenting unusually as enteroliths in a 68-year-old man with complaints of anemia, malena and abdominal pain. The disease if diagnosed in the initial stages responds well to medical treatment but if associated with complications or misdiagnosed, surgical modality is the treatment of choice. In our case, the patient presented with enteroliths and strictures. Resection and anastomosis of the small bowel containing stones was carried out. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis as eosinophilic enteritis.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases (EGIDs) are characterized by a rich eosinophilic inflammation of the GI tract. Clinical and experimental studies suggest that eosinophils have a pathogenic role in EGIDs; however, the function of eosinophils in these diseases remains an enigma. This article describes eosinophil immunoregulatory and effector function and discusses the possible involvement of these pathways in EGIDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal pain is the most common indication for oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) in children. However, existing studies examining the diagnostic outcomes of OGD in children with abdominal pain are limited. AIM To examine the diagnostic yield of OGD with biopsy in the evaluation of abdominal pain and to describe the endoscopic and histological findings in patients undergoing OGD for abdominal pain of unclear aetiology. METHODS We performed a retrospective cross-sectional cohort study in children under 18 years of age who had OGD for the primary indication of abdominal pain, at Texas Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters from 1 January 2002 to 30 June 2005. RESULTS Overall, OGD was diagnostic in 454 (38.1%) of the 1191 procedures, including reflux oesophagitis (23%, n = 271), Helicobacter pylori infections (5%, n = 55), peptic ulcers (3%, n = 32), eosinophilic oesophagitis (2%, n = 25), celiac disease (1%, n = 9) and Crohn's disease (0.5%, n = 7). Male gender, older age, elevated C-reactive protein and vomiting were associated with increased diagnostic yield. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that OGD is valuable for the evaluation of chronic abdominal pain in children, with a diagnostic yield of 38%. The majority of alarm symptoms and routine laboratory tests are not significantly associated with diagnostic yield.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is an uncommon disease characterized by focal or diffuse eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract, and is usually associated with dyspepsia, diarrhea and peripheral eosinophilia. Diffuse gastrointestinal tract and colonic involvement are uncommon. The endoscopic appearance may vary from normal to mucosal nodularity and ulceration. Gastrointestinal obstruction is unusual and is associated with predominantly muscular disease. We present five unusual cases of EG associated with gastric outlet and duodenal obstruction. Two cases presented with acute pancreatitis and one had a history of pancreatitis. Four cases responded well to medical therapy and one had recurrent gastric outlet obstruction that required surgery. Four out of the five cases had endoscopic and histological evidence of esophagitis and two had colitis. Two patients had ascites. These cases reaffirm that EG is a disorder with protean manifestations and may involve the entire gastrointestinal tract. Gastric outlet and/or small bowel obstruction is an important though uncommon presentation of EG. It may also present as esophagitis, gastritis with polypoid lesions, ulcers or erosions, colitis and pancreatitis and may mimic malignancy.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a clinicopathological disease affecting both children and adults that is characterized by patchy or diffuse eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract with variable resultant clinical gastrointestinal manifestations. The eosinophil, eotaxin, and Th-2 cytokines are important in pathogenesis of this disease entity. It may be confused with parasitic and bacterial infections (including Helicobacter pylori), inflammatory bowel disease, hypereosinophilic syndrome, myeloproliferative disorders, periarteritis, allergic vasculitis, scleroderma, drug injury, and drug hypersensivity. Obtaining the correct diagnosis is important, and a pathologist usually makes this distinction. Effective treatments include systemic/topical corticosteroids, specific food elimination or an elemental diet, certain drugs, and even surgery. A variety of new therapeutic approaches are now under trial.

Abstract
The spectrum of food allergy consists of a variety of different clinical pictures including immunoglobulin (Ig)E, and non-IgE food allergy as well as mixed, IgE and non-IgE disorders. In addition, eosinophilic diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with occasional IgE-type sensitization are increasingly recognized. As a consequence, the clinical picture of food allergy is pleomorphic and can range from chronic GI symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of food allergy is mostly hampered by the lack of reliable in vitro tests for non-IgE-mediated diseases, and in most cases relies on a reoccurrence of symptoms upon re-exposure to the antigen; in general during a standardized food challenge. Currently, there is no safe and efficient treatment for food allergy and the treatment relies on avoidance diets. Priorities for research have been identified by iPAC (international Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Consortium) and outlined in this review. They include studies to better identify the pathogenesis of food allergy, including genetic aspects; studies to develop diagnostic and follow-up tests; studies for standardization of food challenges; as well as studies addressing a safe and efficient treatment of food allergy.
