Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To delineate common and uncommon dietary and nutritional deficiencies in individuals with chronic heavy alcohol use and alcohol use disorder and to highlight important advances in the nutrition field in patients ranging from those with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and no liver disease to those with decompensated alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). RECENT FINDINGS Patients with AUD may have nutritional deficiencies, especially isolated nutrient deficiencies, such as thiamine or zinc deficiencies. This should not be surprising, as alcohol is a major source of "empty calories." It is devoid of critical macronutrients, such as protein, and micronutrients including important vitamins and minerals. Patients with AUD frequently drink much more than often appreciated (10-20 drinks a day). Patients with AUD and early ALD often begin to develop more apparent nutritional deficiencies. Healthcare providers need to be aware of the presenting features of individual nutrient deficiencies, such as thiamine deficiency, and to provide prompt treatment. In patients with more advanced liver disease, malnutrition correlates with severity of liver disease. It is important to understand the value of nutritional support throughout the spectrum of AUD. SUMMARY We review nutritional deficiencies in the spectrum of patients with AUD and ALD and highlight new information and recommendations.

Abstract
Investigating the relationship between alcohol consumption and physical performance, we used data from the 2015-2018 Know Your Heart study on 4215 adults aged 35-69 from Arkhangelsk and Novosibirsk, Russia. We classified participants' drinking status into non-drinking, non-problem drinking, hazardous drinking, and harmful drinking based on their self-reported drinking behaviors. To evaluate physical performance, we developed a Composite Physical Performance Scale (CPPS), which combined the results of three functional tests: grip strength (GS), closed-eyes balance, and chair rises (CR). We applied multivariable linear regression to assess the relationship between alcohol consumption and CPPS score, and ordinal logistic regression to explore the associations between alcohol consumption and the three functional tests separately. The results showed that harmful drinking was associated with lower CPPS scores compared to non-problem drinking. Among harmful drinking men, the decrease in CPPS scores was explained by all three tests equally and exceptionally by GS among women. Non-drinking was also associated with decreased CPPS, linked to lower GS and CR scores in men, and only lower GS scores in women. The study revealed a reduced physical performance in the non-drinking and harmful drinking groups compared to non-problem drinking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthy lifestyle behaviors among postmenopausal women are important to prevent chronic diseases and improve health later in life. Heterogeneous lifestyle patterns may exist among postmenopausal women, and socioeconomic status (SES) is a critical determinant of lifestyle behaviors. However, little is known about distinct SES-specific patterns of lifestyle behaviors among postmenopausal women. Thus, this study used latent class analysis to identify subgroups of postmenopausal women with different health behaviors according to income and to examine the predictors of income-specific subgroups. METHODS We analyzed nationally representative data from the Eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, collected in 2019 and 2020. We used nine lifestyles (i.e., current smoking and drinking, high-risk drinking, walking, muscle-strengthening exercise, sleep, vegetable and fruit intakes, and weight control efforts). We conducted a multiple-group latent class analysis using monthly household income as a proxy for SES. The monthly household income variable was calculated by standardizing monthly household income by the number of family members and then divided into quintiles. We classified the participants into low- (i.e., Q1 and Q2) and high-income (i.e., Q3, Q4, and Q5) groups. RESULTS Although the three-class models best fit the data of low- and high-income groups, we found differential patterns by income: (a) for low-income group, "relatively healthy (RH)," "lowest physical activity, insufficient fruit intake, and no intention to control weight," and "high-risk drinking and insufficient fruit intake" classes and (b) for high-income group, "RH," "lowest physical activity," "high-risk drinking and insufficient fruit intake and sleep" classes. The proportion of the RH class was largest in both groups. However, lifestyle patterns in low-income group showed multiple and unhealthy characteristics than those in high-income group. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that different underlying lifestyle patterns exist in postmenopausal women with low- and high-income. To promote healthy behaviors among postmenopausal women, health professionals should develop and apply lifestyle interventions tailored to lifestyle pattern characteristics according to income.

Abstract
PURPOSE Alcohol-related myopathy is one of the earliest alcohol-associated pathological tissue changes that is progressively exacerbated by cumulative long-term alcohol misuse. Acute and chronic alcohol use leads to changes in skeletal muscle mass and function. As discussed in this evidence-based review, alcohol-mediated mechanisms are multifactorial with effects on anabolic and catabolic signaling, mitochondrial bioenergetics, extracellular matrix remodeling, and epigenomic alterations. However, systematic studies are limited, especially regarding the acute effects of alcohol on skeletal muscle. SEARCH METHODS This review focuses on peer-reviewed manuscripts published between January 2012 and November 2022 using the search terms "alcohol" or "ethanol" and "skeletal muscle" in MEDLINE, PubMed, and Web of Science using EndNote reference management software. SEARCH RESULTS Eligible manuscripts included full-length research papers that discussed acute and chronic effects of alcohol on skeletal muscle mass and function in both clinical and preclinical studies. The review also includes alcohol-mediated skeletal muscle effects in the context of comorbidities. The three databases together yielded 708 manuscripts. Of these, the authors excluded from this review 548 papers that did not have "alcohol" or "muscle" in the title and 64 papers that were duplicates or did not discuss skeletal muscle. Thus, of all the manuscripts considered for this review, 96 are included and 612 are excluded. Additionally, relevant papers published earlier than 2012 are included to provide context to the review. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Both acute and chronic alcohol use decrease protein synthesis and increase protein degradation. Alcohol also impairs mitochondrial function and extracellular matrix remodeling. However, there is a gap in the literature on the known alcohol-mediated mechanisms, including senescence, role of immune activation, and interorgan communication, on the development of alcohol-related myopathy. With increased life expectancy, changing alcohol use patterns, and increasing frequency of alcohol use among females, current observational studies are needed on the prevalence of alcohol-related myopathy. Additionally, the compounding effects of acute and chronic alcohol use on skeletal muscle with aging or exercise, in response to injury or disuse, and in the context of comorbidities including diabetes and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), call for further investigation. Though evidence suggests that abstinence or reducing alcohol use can improve muscle mass and function, they are not restored to normal levels. Hence, understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms can help in the design of therapeutic strategies to improve skeletal muscle health.

Abstract
Previous cohort studies have reported conflicting associations between alcohol consumption and chronic kidney disease, characterized by proteinuria and low glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This systematic review, which included 14,634,940 participants from 11 cohort studies, assessed a dose-dependent association of alcohol consumption and incidence of proteinuria and low estimated GFR (eGFR) of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Compared with non-drinkers, the incidence of proteinuria was lower in drinkers with alcohol consumption of ≤12.0 g/day (relative risk 0.87 [95% confidence interval 0.83, 0.92]), but higher in drinkers with alcohol consumption of 36.1–60.0 g/day (1.09 [1.03, 1.15]), suggesting a J-shaped association between alcohol consumption and the incidence of proteinuria. Incidence of low eGFR was lower in drinkers with alcohol consumption of ≤12.0 and 12.1–36.0 than in non-drinkers (≤12.0, 12.1–36.0, and 36.1–60.0 g/day: 0.93 [0.90, 0.95], 0.82 [0.78, 0.86], and 0.89 [0.77, 1.03], respectively), suggesting that drinkers were at lower risk of low eGFR. In conclusion, compared with non-drinkers, mild drinkers were at lower risk of proteinuria and low eGFR, whereas heavy drinkers had a higher risk of proteinuria but a lower risk of low eGFR. The clinical impact of high alcohol consumption should be assessed in well-designed studies.

Relationship Between Handgrip Strength and Metabolic Syndrome Among Middle-Aged and Elderly Cancer Survivors: A National Population Study. Cancer Nurs 2022; 45:457-464. Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of middle-aged and elderly cancer survivors is rising. Metabolic syndrome, which has been established as an important risk factor for mortality and cardiovascular disease, has also been linked to quality of life in middle-aged and elderly cancer survivors. Recent studies documented a relationship between handgrip strength and metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between relative handgrip strength in middle-aged and elderly cancer survivors and metabolic syndrome in a national population-based sample from Korea. METHODS This was a cross-sectional, secondary descriptive analysis of data from the sixth to seventh (2014-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI-VII). A final total of 1096 cancer survivors aged 45 years and older were selected. RESULTS Lower relative handgrip strength was linked to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. For men, the adjusted odds ratio for having metabolic syndrome in individuals with a relative handgrip strength score of the 2 Quartile was 4.43 (95% confidence interval, 2.25-8.71) compared with the 4 Quartile (reference) ( P < .001), whereas for women, this was 3.67 (95% confidence interval, 2.06-6.53) ( P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Lower relative handgrip strength is correlated with components of metabolic syndrome and is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome among middle-aged and elderly cancer survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Physicians and nurses need to identify and monitor the handgrip strength for managing the risk of metabolic syndrome among middle-aged and elderly cancer survivors. Preventive and therapeutic programs that focus on handgrip strength should be developed to prevent metabolic syndrome during their rehabilitation.

Abstract
Objectives Sarcopenia is a clinically relevant syndrome with health, social, and economic implications. Alcohol consumption is one of the risk factors for sarcopenia, but it has not been fully investigated in Chinese populations. The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between alcohol consumption patterns (including the volume and frequency of alcohol consumption) and sarcopenia or its elements among Chinese women and men from Henan Province. Method A cross-sectional study was designed to collect information about nutrition and health in Henan Province, China, and a total of 680 individuals were studied. Sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria updated in 2019. Alcohol consumption was calculated in grams per day and divided into three groups. Drinking frequency was divided into four groups. We assessed the likelihood that sarcopenia was associated with drinking patterns using multiple logistic regression analysis by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CIs) after multiple adjustments. Results We found that men who consumed > 25 g of ethanol per day were approximately three times more likely to have low muscle mass (OR, 3.99; 95% CI, 1.10–17.05) or low grip strength (OR, 3.39; 95% CI, 1.33–9.92) than nondrinkers after multiple adjustments. In addition, males who consumed alcohol more than 4 times per week were approximately threefold to fivefold more likely to have low muscle mass (OR, 4.99; 95% CI, 1.24–25.55) or low grip strength (OR, 3.37; 95% CI, 1.40–8.74) than nondrinkers. Unfortunately, we did not find a relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and sarcopenia or gait speed among males, and there was no association between alcohol consumption patterns and sarcopenia or any elements. Conclusion Heavy alcohol consumption and frequent drinking are important risk factors for low muscle mass and muscle strength in Chinese men from Henan province.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a common disease defined as the loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. Alcohol consumption is an uncertain risk factor for sarcopenia. Previous observational epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia. A literature review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library through April 2022 using keywords related to alcohol consumption and sarcopenia. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated using a random effects model meta-analysis. The risk of bias of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle−Ottawa scale. Nineteen observational studies that reported 3826 sarcopenia patients among 422,870 participants were included in the qualitative analysis. Alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with sarcopenia risk (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.20; I2 = 60.6%). Alcohol consumption resulted in a non-significant decrease in the risk of sarcopenia in men (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.46 to 1.07; I2 = 0.0%) and in women (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.63 to 2.30; I2 = 75.8%). The subgroup analyses by age and alcohol consumption were significantly associated with an increased the risk of sarcopenia in <65 years (OR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.22 to 5.62; I2 = 100%). This meta-analysis of observational studies indicated that alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with sarcopenia risk. However, there are factors influencing the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia, such as smoking and dietary patterns. Additional study of these confounding factors is needed for the systematic analysis of the association of alcohol consumption with sarcopenia in future studies.

Abstract
Background: Chronic alcohol misuse is associated with alcoholic myopathy, characterized by skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy. Moreover, there is evidence that sports-related people seem to exhibit a greater prevalence of problematic alcohol consumption, especially binge drinking (BD), which might not cause alcoholic myopathy but can negatively impact muscle function and amateur and professional athletic performance.Objective: To review the literature concerning the effects of alcohol consumption on skeletal muscle function and structure that can affect muscle performance.Methodology: We examined the currently available literature (PubMed, Google Scholars) to develop a narrative review summarizing the knowledge about the effects of alcohol on skeletal muscle function and exercise performance, obtained from studies in human beings and animal models for problematic alcohol consumption.Results: Exercise- and sport-based studies indicate that alcohol consumption can negatively affect muscle recovery after vigorous exercise, especially in men, while women seem less affected. Clinical studies and pre-clinical laboratory research have led to the knowledge of some of the mechanisms involved in alcohol-related muscle dysfunction, including an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic pathways, reduced regeneration, increased inflammation and fibrosis, and deficiencies in energetic balance and mitochondrial function. These pathological features can appear not only under chronic alcohol misuse but also in other alcohol consumption patterns.Conclusions: Most laboratory-based studies use chronic or acute alcohol exposure, while episodic BD, the most common drinking pattern in amateur and professional athletes, is underrepresented. Nevertheless, alcohol consumption negatively affects skeletal muscle health through different mechanisms, which collectively might contribute to reduced sports performance.

Abstract
Abstract. BACKGROUND Previous studies have investigated the effect of differential educational attainment at younger ages on health disparities among older adults, but how such an effect can be attenuated remains understudied. This study examines the mediating effects of four health-related behaviours, namely smoking, alcohol drinking, healthy eating, and physical activity, on the relationship between older adults' education and grip strength. METHODS The study used data from 7,064 individuals aged 60 years and older who participated in the 2009 National Health Examination Survey of Thailand. To examine the relationships among education, health behaviours, and grip strength, multivariate regressions were performed following Baron and Kenny's approach. Generalized Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was utilized to quantify the mediating effects. RESULTS All else being equal, education is positively associated with stronger grip for both genders. The mediation analyses demonstrate that health-related behaviour plays an important role in the relationship between education and grip strength; however, the extent to which it mediates the effect of education varies with the type of health behaviour and between genders. Not smoking and engaging in physical activity can partly explain the relationship between education and grip strength in older men. Meanwhile, the consumption of fruits and vegetables and participation in regular physical activity significantly mediate the effect of education on grip strength in older women. CONCLUSION Our study reaffirms the importance of educational opportunity in earlier life and recommends health-related behavioural modifications to improve health status in low-educated older adults.

Abstract
Objective To describe handgrip strength (HGS) and identify associated factors in community-dwelling older adults in rural Vietnam. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in community-dwelling older adults 80 years and over in five rural communities in Hanoi, Vietnam. Age-gender-BMI stratified HGS values were reported as means and standard deviations. Demographic characteristics, malnutrition, risk of fall, basic activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were investigated. Multivariate linear regression explored the association between HGS and these factors. Results In 308 participants, mean age was 85.4 ± 4.2 years. Mean HGS was 21.6 ± 6.1 kg for males and 15.3 ± 4.3 kg for females. HGS in our sample was generally lower than that in other European countries and Asian threshold. Low HGS was correlated with older age (β = -0.196, p < 0.001), female (β = -0.443, p < 0.001), low education (β = -0.130, p < 0.05), risk of falls (β = -0.114, p < 0.05), and lower IADL (β = 0.153, p = 0.001). Conclusions The age-gender-BMI stratified HGS values of 80 years and over community-dwellers in rural Vietnam were described. HGS decreased with advanced age, female, low education, high risk of falls, and impaired IADLs. The results could provide useful reference data for further investigations and measures in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In a healthy person, from 35 years of age, there is an annual loss of muscle mass at the rate of 1–2% and is associated with a decline in the quality of life. This study aimed to identify the particular dietary patterns associated with the risk of lower lean muscle mass in Korean postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS/METHODS The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a population-based, continuous cross-sectional annual survey. The participants of the KNHANES IV (2008–2009) and V (2010–2011) were considered for this study. The study sample consisted of 1548 postmenopausal women, aged 45–86 years. Lower lean muscle mass was defined as having appendicular skeletal muscle mass corrected for body weight less than 1 standard deviation of the young reference group aged 20 to 39 years in KNHANES IV and V. To identify the dietary pattern using factor analysis, 24-h recall data was used. RESULTS The prevalence of lower lean muscle mass was 31.3% in this study population. Four dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis; ‘Diverse’, ‘Western’, ‘Traditional’, and ‘Snacks and beverages’. The ‘Western’ pattern, highest factor loadings for flour and bread, potatoes, red meat, processed meat, eggs, and cheese, was significantly associated with a high (60%) risk of lower lean muscle mass (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 1.60 [1.07–2.39], P for trend = 0.01) after adjustments for potential covariates. The other 3 dietary patterns were not associated with lower lean muscle mass. CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that the ‘Western’ dietary pattern that includes flour and bread, potatoes, red meat, processed meat, eggs, and cheese, may be associated with a higher risk of lower lean muscle mass in Korean postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, is an enormous health problem in an aging world because of its many clinical and societal adverse effects. The uncovering of healthy dietary patterns is an important strategy to prevent or delay sarcopenia. We used K-means clustering to identify subgroups of men and women based on nutritional and health-related factors and investigated risk factors for low muscle mass in the subgroups and in the study population as a whole. METHODS We analyzed a total 10,863 participants over 40 years of age who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey from 2008 to 2011. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to determine the appendicular lean mass (ALM) of the participants. Participants with low ALM adjusted BMI (ALM/BMI) were then identified using the criteria of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health sarcopenia project. K-means clustering and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze associations between nutritional and health-related variables and low ALM/BMI in the population as a whole and in the individual clusters. RESULTS A total of 712 (15.8%) men and 869 (13.7%) women had low ALM/BMI. Five clusters were identified in men and women, respectively. Two clusters of men and one cluster of women exhibited an increased risk of low ALM/BMI. Old age, low total energy intake, low levels of physical activity, and a high number of chronic diseases were consistent risk factors for low ALM/BMI in all Korean men and women. Low protein was a common risk factor for low ALM/BMI in men. After dividing all subjects by the K-means clustering algorithm, two risk factors (high fat intake and smoking) and four factors (low intakes of carbohydrate, protein and fat, and high alcohol consumption) were additionally proposed in Korean men and women, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Age, low total energy intake, low level of physical activity, and an increased number of chronic diseases were consistent risk factors for low ALM/BMI in men and women. Cluster-specific risk factors were also noted in men and women.

Abstract
The influence of alcohol consumption on the association of protein intake with muscle mass was assessed using data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Dietary protein intakes of 4412 middle-aged participants with normal baseline muscle mass were assessed using a semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire, and baseline alcohol consumption data (e.g., frequency and amount) were collected using a structured questionnaire. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), defined as the weight-adjusted skeletal muscle mass, was measured using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analyses every 2 years until the study endpoint. Low muscle mass was defined as a SMI <2 standard deviations below the sex-specific normal mean for a young reference group. During a 12-year follow-up, 395 subjects developed a low SMI. After multivariate adjustments, high protein intake (≥1.2 g/kg body weight (BW)) was shown to reduce the risk of low SMI development in both men (hazard ratio (HR): 0.24; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12, 0.51; p for trend < 0.001) and women (HR: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.53; p for trend < 0.001), compared with low protein intake (<0.8 g/kg BW). Alcohol consumption attenuated the protective influence of protein intake against low SMI development in women (HR: 0.64; 95% CI: 0.18, 2.25; p for trend = 0.478). Among the total subjects, heavy drinkers with high protein intake were not significantly associated with the development of a low SMI (HR: 0.20; 95% CI: 0.03, 1.50; p = 0.117). Additional research should clarify the dose-response effects of alcohol consumption on muscle mass relative to daily protein intake.

Abstract
Background: Preservation of muscle mass during aging reduces the risk of frailty and age-related chronic diseases. We investigated the lifestyle, psychological factors, and common cardiometabolic diseases associated with accelerated muscle loss in middle-aged and older women. Materials and Methods: A total of 881 women aged 40 years and older who underwent regular health checkup at a tertiary care hospital in Korea in 2010-2011 and underwent a 6-year follow-up were included in this study. Lifestyle and health statuses were evaluated through a standardized questionnaire and laboratory testing. Muscle mass was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: The accelerated loss group showing appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) loss >3% for 6 years represented 24.4% (n = 215) of the total participants. Current smoking women presented a higher odds ratio (OR) for accelerated loss of ASM than nonsmoking individuals after adjusting for age, body mass index, exercise, caloric intake, alcohol consumption, menopausal state, and diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR 3.53, confidence interval [95% CI] 1.28-9.74, p = 0.015). Women with DM showed a higher OR than non-DM individuals after adjusting for the aforementioned variables and smoking status (OR 2.92, 95% CI 1.39-6.14, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Current smoking and DM are predictors for accelerated muscle mass loss in middle-aged and older women. Smokers and DM patients need to monitor muscle mass changes and apply preventive intervention steps. Smoking cessation and good glycemic control are required not only for reducing cardiovascular risk but also for improving muscle health.

Abstract
Hand grip strength (HGS) is a means to assess health status and physical abilities indirectly. Various factors are known to be related to HGS, but data on the factors influencing HGS in the Korean population are lacking. Recently, the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed social status, nutrition, physical status, and other medical history including HGS. This study aimed to investigate the social, physical, and individual health behavior factors associated with low HGS in the elderly Korean population. This population-based cross-sectional study was based on the 2014-2016 KNHANES. Community-dwelling Korean elderly (aged ≥65 years) were included in this survey. The relationship between HGS and socioeconomic status, nutrition, exercise, and other clinical characteristics were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. The sample size was 3,634 (weighted: 6,006,406). Elderly men and women with low HGS showed lower body mass index, reduced physical activity and lower education level. Among elderly men, excessive carbohydrate and inadequate protein intake were observed in the low HGS group. Meanwhile, older women who did not drink alcohol and had diabetes were at higher risk of low HGS. In conclusion, various physical, nutritional, socioeconomic and comorbidity statuses were seemed to be the factors associated with HGS in Korean elderly. However, further cohort or case-control study will be necessary to determine the causal relationship of those factors and HGS.

Abstract
Background: What happens in the early-elderly ‘pretiree’ period potentially influences the divergent paths of healthy or unhealthy ageing. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to profile musculoskeletal health and lifestyle behaviours for men and women in their late-fifties and sixties.Methods: For 482 participants from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, we measured DXA-derived appendicular lean mass (rALM), bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck and percentage body fat mass (%BF). Low-rALM and low-BMD referred to sex-specific T-scores<-1.0. Associations between exposures and low-rALM and/or low-BMD were explored using multivariable logistic regression.Results: Three-quarters of participants had high %BF, 98(20.3%) had low-rALM, 202(41.9%) had low-BMD and 63(13.1%) had both low-rALM and low-BMD. Eight-two (17.0%) were very active and one-third participated in sports/recreational activities. Most [n=416(87.8%)] met the recommended daily intake (RDI) for protein; only 119(25.1%) met the RDI for calcium. Less than 10% smoked and one-third exceeded recommended alcohol intakes. Independent of age, weight and sex, greater %BF and sedentary behaviour increased the likelihood of low-rALM; high-alcohol consumption increased the likelihood of low-BMD; and greater %BF increased the likelihood of low-rALM and low-BMD combined.Conclusions: One-half of participants had rALM and BMD in the normal range. Only a few were involved in resistance-training or weight-bearing exercise, despite having the capacity to be physically active. As sedentary lifestyles, excessive adiposity and high alcohol use were associated with low-rALM and/or low-BMD, we propose that these adverse factors be potential targets among pretirees to minimise their risk of entering old age with poor musculoskeletal health.
