Abstract
Dental implant therapy is generally successful. However, when such therapy fails, considerations for implant replacement must be carefully considered. The survivability of implants placed into previously implanted sites must be considered. Appraisal of early implant loss versus late implant loss is important in presurgical planning for implant replacement. This review highlights the factors that can impact the success of implant reimplantation.

Abstract
The oral cavity and gut are two important microbial habitats in the human body, harboring the most ecologically rich and taxonomically diverse microbial communities in humans, which play a key role in microbiome related diseases. In recent years, the emerging concept of the oral-gut-brain axis has attracted widespread attention in the fields of neuroscience, digestive science, and microbiology. It is not only an anatomical description, but also a comprehensive concept that covers multiple physiological functions and pathological mechanisms. Simply put, the oral-gut-brain axis refers to the complex network that connects the mouth, gut, and brain tightly together through neural connections and hormonal and immune pathways. With the deepening of research on the oral-gut-brain axis theory, more and more evidence shows that it plays an important role in depression, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. This article reviews the recent progress in research of the oral-gut-brain axis in psychiatric and neurological diseases.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the associations between oral health and depression, anxiety and their comorbidity in the UK Biobank cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS Oral health problems were self-reported at baseline. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed using the Mental Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4) in a cross-sectional study. In the cohort study, diagnoses of depression and anxiety disorders were based on hospital records. Logistic regression and Cox regression models were used to analyse the association between oral health and depression/anxiety. RESULTS A total of 305,188 participants were included in the cross-sectional study, and multivariate analysis showed that periodontal disease was associated with depression and/or anxiety (odds ratio [OR]: 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.73-1.86). In the prospective cohort study involving 264,706 participants, periodontal disease was significantly associated with an increased risk of depression and/or anxiety (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.10-1.19), depression (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.13-1.25) and anxiety (HR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.07-1.19). Periodontal disease was also significantly associated with comorbid depression and anxiety (HR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.16-1.38). Multiple mediation analysis using baseline inflammatory factors showed that white blood cell count and C-reactive protein explained 3.07% and 3.15% of the association between periodontal disease and depression and anxiety, respectively. However, the results of longitudinal multiple mediation analysis of inflammatory factors at first follow-up (N = 10,673) were not significant. CONCLUSIONS Periodontal disease was found to be consistently associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety and their comorbidity.

Abstract
The role of the oral microbiome in mental health has recently been appreciated within the proposed oral-brain axis. This study examined the structure and composition of the salivary microbiome in a large-scale population-based cohort of individuals reporting mental health symptoms (n = 306) compared to mentally healthy controls (n = 164) using 16S rRNA sequencing. Mental health symptoms were evaluated using validated questionnaires and included depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with accompanying periodontal outcomes. Participants also indicated current or previous diagnoses of anxiety, depression, periodontitis, and gingivitis. Mental and periodontal health variables influenced the overall composition of the oral microbiome. PTSD symptoms correlated with a lower clr-transformed relative abundance of Haemophilus sputorum and a higher clr-transformed relative abundance of Prevotella histicola. The clr-transformed relative abundance of P. histicola was also positively associated with depressive scores and negatively associated with psychological quality of life. Anxiety disorder diagnosis was associated with a lower clr-transformed relative abundance of Neisseria elongate and a higher clr-transformed relative abundance of Oribacterium asaccharolyticum. A higher clr-transformed relative abundance of Shuttleworthia and lower clr-transformed relative abundance of Capnocytophaga were evident in those who reported a clinical periodontitis diagnosis. Higher Eggerthia and lower Haemophilus parainfluenzae clr-transformed relative abundances were associated with reported clinical periodontitis diagnoses and psychotherapeutic efficacy. Functional prediction analysis revealed a potential role for tryptophan metabolism/degradation in the oral-brain axis, which was confirmed by lower plasma serotonin levels across symptomatic groups. This study sheds light on the intricate interplay between oral microbiota, periodontal and mental health outcomes, and a potential role for tryptophan metabolism in the proposed oral-brain axis, emphasizing the need for further exploration to pave the way for novel therapeutic interventions and predicting therapeutic response.

Abstract
A growing body of research suggested that there was a link between poor periodontal health and systemic diseases, particularly with the early development of cognitive disorders, dementia, and depression. This is especially true in cases of changes in diet, malnutrition, loss of muscular endurance, and abnormal systemic inflammatory response. Our study aimed to determine the extent of these associations to better target the multi-level healthy aging challenge investigating the impact of periodontal disease on cognitive disorders (cognitive impairment and cognitive decline), dementia, and depression. We conducted a comprehensive literature search up to November 2023 using six different electronic databases. Two independent researchers assessed the eligibility of 7363 records against the inclusion criteria and found only 46 records that met the requirements. The study is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023485688). We generated random effects pooled estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate whether periodontal disease increased the risk of the investigated outcomes. The quality assessment revealed moderate quality of evidence and risk of bias. Periodontal disease was found to be associated with both cognitive disorders (relative risk (RR) 1.25, 95% CI 1.11-1.40, in the analysis of cross-sectional studies); cognitive impairment (RR 3.01, 95% CI 1.52-5.95 for longitudinal studies, cognitive decline); and dementia (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.10-1.36). However, no significant increased risk of depression among subjects with periodontal disease was found (RR 1.07, 95% CI 0.95-1.21). Despite the association with two of the three explored outcomes, the available evidence on periodontal diseases and dementia, cognitive disorders, and depression is controversial due to several limitations. Therefore, further investigations involving validated and standardized tools are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and tooth loss are associated with the occurrence of systemic disease or the progression of multi-factorial disease, and both are considered important public health issues by World Health Organization (WHO). Previous research just suggested that tooth loss can generate psychological stress, low self-esteem, anxiety and other emotional disturbances. However, the precise correlation and underlying mechanisms between depression and tooth loss remains poorly understood. Consequently, we aim to explore the association between depression and tooth loss through a cross-sectional study, as well as investigate potential pathways of influence. METHODS We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression models were employed to examine the relationship between depression and tooth loss, as well as the associations among healthy lifestyle, systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), depression and tooth loss. Through the mediating effect analysis by bootstrapping analysis, we evaluated the mediating effects of healthy lifestyle and SII between depression and tooth loss. RESULTS Depressed patients were more likely to be toothless, and at the same time showed a tendency to have more missing teeth, with odds ratio (OR) = 1.305 (1.098, 1.551), p = 0.003 for 1-7 missing teeth, OR = 1.557 (1.166, 2.079), p = 0.003 for 8-14 missing teeth, and OR = 1.960 (1.476, 2.603), p<0.001 for 15-28 missing teeth. Lower healthy lifestyle scores and higher SII were both associated with more tooth loss. Healthy lifestyle and SII played a partial mediating role in this relationship, with a mediating effect ratio of 41.691% and 3.289%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Depression was positively associated with more severe tooth loss, which was partly mediated by lifestyle and SII. Therefore, attention should also be paid to the effects of depression as a mental disorder on physical health, such as depression and tooth loss. Adopting a healthier lifestyle and controlling systemic inflammation may be potential ways to reduce the impact of depression and tooth loss.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Several psychological conditions, including stress and depression, can adversely affect oral health; in fact, antidepressants, commonly used to treat depressive disorders, may have conflicting effects on the periodontal status of individuals. The aim of this review was to determine the effects of antidepressants on the periodontium. Methods: A literature search was conducted using electronic databases, Pubmed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, focusing on the use of antidepressants and their effects on periodontal health in animals or humans. Results: Seventeen articles have been included with the use of amitriptyline (two studies), desipramine (one study), imipramine (two studies), desvenlafaxine (one study), fluoxetine (six studies), venlafaxine (three studies) and tianeptine (two studies). One study evaluated several categories of antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), tricyclic, atypical and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO). Most trials showed improvements in periodontal health, especially with fluoxetine, but also with imipramine, desipramine, desvenlafaxine and tianeptine; on the contrary, worsening of clinical periodontal indices and increased loss of alveolar bone were reported with venlafaxine. Conclusions: This review suggests that in the presence of comorbidity between periodontitis and depression, pharmacological treatment with SNRIs, SSRIs and mixed antidepressants is associated with improvement in periodontal parameters, except for venlafaxine. Healthcare professionals (especially oral and mental health professionals) should investigate proper adherence to medication therapy in patients with a history of periodontitis and depression. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between periodontitis (exposure variable) and depression severity (outcome variable) in an older German population. We evaluated data from 6,209 participants (median age 62 years) of the Hamburg City Health Study (HCHS). The HCHS is a prospective cohort study and is registered at ClinicalTrial.gov (NCT03934957). Depression severity were assessed with the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Periodontal examination included probing depth, gingival recession, plaque index, and bleeding on probing. Descriptive analyses were stratified by periodontitis severity. Multiple linear regression models were adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, education, smoking, and antidepressant medication. Linear regression analyses revealed a significant association between log-transformed depression severity and periodontitis when including the interaction term for periodontitis * age, even after adjusting for age, sex, diabetes, education, smoking and antidepressant medication. We identified a significant association between severe periodontitis and elevated depression severity, which interacts with age. Additionally, we performed a linear regression model for biomarker analyses, which revealed significant associations between depression severity and severe periodontitis with log-transformed inflammatory biomarkers interleukin 6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). In order to identify new therapeutic strategies for patients with depression and periodontal disease, future prospective studies are needed to assess the physiological and psychosocial mechanisms behind this relationship and the causal directionality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited knowledge regarding the association between oral health and mental health in terms of depressive symptoms and particularly anxiety symptoms. Therefore, our aim was to close this gap in knowledge. METHODS Cross-sectional data were used from wave 5 of the pan-European Survey of Health Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (n = 62 358 observations). The Beck Anxiety Inventory was used to quantify anxiety symptoms and the Euro-D was used to measure depressive symptoms. Oral health was quantified based on the presence of missing natural teeth, the number of missing natural teeth and the extent of replaced teeth. It was adjusted for several covariates in regression analysis. RESULTS Multiple linear regressions revealed that the presence of missing natural teeth was associated with higher anxiety symptoms (β = 0.11, P < 0.001) and higher depressive symptoms (β = 0.22, P < 0.001) among the total sample. Among individuals with at least one missing natural tooth, the number of missing natural teeth was positively associated with higher anxiety symptoms (β = 0.02, P < 0.001) and higher depressive symptoms (β = 0.02, P < 0.001) - and fully replaced teeth (compared to not at all replaced teeth) were associated with lower anxiety symptoms (β = -0.35, P < 0.001) and lower depressive symptoms (β = -0.36, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our study stresses the association between lower oral health and lower mental health among older adults in Europe. Future studies based on longitudinal data are required.

Abstract
The prevalence of anxiety and depression soared following the COVID-19 pandemic. To effectively treat these conditions, a comprehensive understanding of all etiological factors is needed. This study investigated fecal microbial features associated with mental health outcomes (symptoms of anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) in a Spanish cohort in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Microbial communities from stool samples were profiled in 198 individuals who completed validated, self-report questionnaires. 16S ribosomal RNA gene V3-4 amplicon sequencing was performed. Microbial diversity and community structure were analyzed, together with relative taxonomic abundance. In our cohort of N=198, 17.17% reported depressive symptoms, 37.37% state anxiety symptoms, 40.90% trait anxiety symptoms, and 8.08% PTSD symptoms, with high levels of comorbidity. Individuals with trait anxiety had lower Simpson's diversity. Fusicatenibacter saccharivorans was reduced in individuals with comorbid PTSD + depression + state and trait anxiety symptoms, whilst an expansion of Proteobacteria and depletion of Synergistetes phyla were noted in individuals with depressive symptoms. The relative abundance of Anaerostipes was positively correlated with childhood trauma, and higher levels of Turicibacter sanguinis and lower levels of Lentisphaerae were found in individuals who experienced life-threatening traumas. COVID-19 infection and vaccination influenced the overall microbial composition and were associated with distinct relative taxonomic abundance profiles. These findings will help lay the foundation for future studies to identify microbial role players in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD and provide future therapeutic targets to improve mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Background Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is an anaerobic oral commensal and the major coaggregation bridge organism linking early and late colonisers. In recent years, a large number of studies suggest that F. nucleatum is closely related to the development of various systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes, inflammatory bowel diseases, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, respiratory infection, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Objective To review the effect of F. nucleatum on systemic diseases and its possible pathogenesis and to open new avenues for prevention and treatment of F. nucleatum-associated systemic diseases. Design The research included every article published up to July 2022 featuring the keywords 'Systemic diseases' OR 'Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases' OR 'Atherosclerosis' OR 'Adverse pregnancy outcomes' OR 'Inflammatory bowel disease' OR 'Ulcerative colitis' OR 'Crohn’s disease' OR 'Cancers' OR 'Oral squamous cell carcinomas' OR 'Gastrointestinal cancers' OR 'Colorectal cancer' OR 'Breast cancer' OR 'Genitourinary cancers' OR 'Alzheimer’s disease ' OR 'Rheumatoid arthritis' OR 'Respiratory diseases' AND 'Fusobacterium nucleatum' OR 'Periodontal pathogen' OR 'Oral microbiota' OR 'Porphyromonas gingivalis' and was conducted in the major medical databases. Results F. nucleatum can induce immune response and inflammation in the body through direct or indirect pathways, and thus affect the occurrence and development of systemic diseases. Only by continuing to investigate the pathogenic lifestyles of F. nucleatum will we discover the divergent pathways that may be leveraged for diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
Mental health disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, affect a significant number of the global population. Several pathophysiological pathways for these disorders have been identified, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, autonomic nervous system, and the immune system. In addition, life events, environmental factors, and lifestyle affect the onset, progression, and recurrence of mental health disorders. These may all overlap with periodontal and/or peri-implant disease. Mental health disorders are associated with more severe periodontal disease and, in some cases, poorer healing outcomes to nonsurgical periodontal therapy. They can result in behavior modification, such as poor oral hygiene practices, tobacco smoking, and alcohol abuse, which are also risk factors for periodontal disease and, therefore, may have a contributory effect. Stress has immunomodulatory effects regulating immune cell numbers and function, as well as proinflammatory cytokine production. Stress markers such as cortisol and catecholamines may modulate periodontal bacterial growth and the expression of virulence factors. Stress and some mental health disorders are accompanied by a low-grade chronic inflammation that may be involved in their relationship with periodontal disease and vice versa. Although the gut microbiome interacting with the central nervous system (gut-brain axis) is thought to play a significant role in mental illness, less is understood about the role of the oral microbiome. The evidence for mental health disorders on implant outcomes is lacking, but may mainly be through behaviourial changes. Through lack of compliance withoral hygiene and maintenance visits, peri-implant health can be affected. Increased smoking and risk of periodontal disease may also affect implant outcomes. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been linked with higher implant failure. They have an anabolic effect on bone, reducing turnover, which could account for the increased loss.

Abstract
Background Observational and in-vivo research suggested a bidirectional relationship between depression and periodontitis. We estimated the genetic correlation and examined directionality of causation. Methods The study used summary statistics from published genome wide association studies, with sample sizes ranging from 45,563 to 797,563 individuals of European ancestry. We performed linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) to estimate global correlation and used Heritability Estimation from Summary Statistics (ρ-HESS) to further examine local genetic correlation. Latent Heritable Confounder Mendelian randomization (LHC-MR), Causal Analysis using Summary Effect estimates (CAUSE), and conventional MR approaches assessed bidirectional causation. Results LDSC observed only weak genetic correlation (rg = 0.06, P-Value = 0.619) between depression and periodontitis. Analysis of local genetic correlation using ρ-HESS did not reveal loci of significant local genetic covariance. LHC-MR, CAUSE and conventional MR models provided no support for bidirectional causation between depression and periodontitis, with odds ratios ranging from 1.00 to 1.06 in either direction. Conclusions Results do not support shared heritability or a causal connection between depression and periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Dysregulated immune response arising in the periphery can induce depressive symptoms through neuroimmune interactions. Inflammatory oral pathology can be a potent inducer of chronic neuroimmune response relevant to depression. We aimed to synthesize available evidence for the association between inflammatory periodontal diseases (IPD) and major depression (MD) in relation to a broad range of biomarkers. Methods Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched from inception until January 27, 2022. Search terms included subject headings and synonyms for inflammatory periodontal disease and depression. Studies that reported data on both depression and inflammatory periodontal disease as categories along with measurement of a biomarker were considered. Two reviewers independently selected the articles for inclusion, extracted data and assessed the quality of each study. The protocol for this study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021215524. Results Twenty-eight studies were included in the final review-eleven cross-sectional studies, seven case-control studies, and six prospective cohort studies conducted in humans; the remaining four were experimental animal studies. Eighteen studies including all animal studies reported a positive association between depression and periodontal disease; one study reported a negative association and another nine studies found no such associations. Twenty studies reported mixed associations between IPD and biomarkers (i.e, salivary, serum, urine or gingival crevicular fluid cortisol, C reactive protein, cytokines, etc.). Biomarkers related to depression were gingival crevicular fluid cortisol, interleukin 6 (IL-6), Il-1β, immunoglobulin G against Bacterioides forsythus; root canal lipopolysaccharides; blood IL-6, IL-1β, cortisol, advanced oxidation protein products, nitric oxide metabolites, lipid hydroperoxides and trapping antioxidant parameter; whereas five studies found no associations between depression and a biomarker. Although animal studies showed interaction of immune, inflammatory and neurotrophic biomarkers in the relationship between depression and periodontal disease, human studies showed mixed findings. In most studies, there were risks of bias due to the sample selection and assessment protocol. Study heterogeneity and limited number of comparable studies reporting on shared biomarkers precluded a meta-analysis. Conclusion Immune-inflammatory contribution to depression was evident in the context of inflammatory periodontal diseases, but whether biomarkers mediate the associations between IPD and MD needs to be tested through methodologically rigorous studies aiming specifically at this hypothesis.

Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) imposes a significant burden on patients and communities. Although the microbiome-gut-brain axis has been proposed as a mediator or moderator of PTSD risk and persistence of symptoms, clinical data directly delineating the gut microbiome's relationship to PTSD are sparse. This study investigated associations between the gut microbiome and mental health outcomes in participants with PTSD (n = 79) and trauma-exposed controls (TECs) (n = 58). Diagnoses of PTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), and childhood trauma were made using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5), MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), respectively. Microbial communities from stool samples were profiled using 16S ribosomal RNA gene V4 amplicon sequencing and tested for associations with PTSD-related variables of interest. Random forest models identified a consortium of four genera, i.e., a combination of Mitsuokella, Odoribacter, Catenibacterium, and Olsenella, previously associated with periodontal disease, that could distinguish PTSD status with 66.4% accuracy. The relative abundance of this consortium was higher in the PTSD group and correlated positively with CAPS-5 and CTQ scores. MDD diagnosis was also associated with increased relative abundance of the Bacteroidetes phylum. Current use of psychotropics significantly impacted community composition and the relative abundances of several taxa. Early life trauma may prime the microbiome for changes in composition that facilitate a pro-inflammatory cascade and increase the risk of development of PTSD. Future studies should rigorously stratify participants into healthy controls, TECs, and PTSD (stratified by psychotropic drug use) to explore the role of the oral-gut-microbiome-brain axis in trauma-related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence supports that alterations in the gut microbiota play an essential role in the etiology of anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric disorders. However, the potential effect of oral microbiota on mental health has received little attention. METHODS Using the latest genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data of the oral microbiome, polygenic risk scores (PRSs) of 285 salivary microbiomes and 309 tongue dorsum microbiomes were conducted. Logistic and linear regression models were applied to evaluate the relationship between salivary-tongue dorsum microbiome interactions with anxiety and depression. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was utilized to compute the causal effects between the oral microbiome, anxiety, and depression. RESULTS We observed significant salivary-tongue dorsum microbiome interactions related to anxiety and depression traits. Significantly, one common interaction was observed to be associated with both anxiety score and depression score, Centipeda periodontii SGB 224 × Granulicatella uSGB 3289 (P depressionscore = 1.41 × 10-8, P anxietyscore = 5.10 × 10-8). Furthermore, we detected causal effects between the oral microbiome and anxiety and depression. Importantly, we identified one salivary microbiome associated with both anxiety and depression in both the UKB database and the Finngen public database, Eggerthia (P IVW - majordepression - UKB = 2.99 × 10-6, P IVW - Self - reportedanxiety/panicattacks - UKB = 3.06 × 10-59, P IVW - depression - Finngen = 3.16 × 10 , - 16 P IVW - anxiety - Finngen = 1.14 × 10-115). CONCLUSION This study systematically explored the relationship between the oral microbiome and anxiety and depression, which could help improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and propose new diagnostic targets and early intervention strategies.

Neuropeptides as the Shared Genetic Crosstalks Linking Periodontitis and Major Depression Disorder. DISEASE MARKERS 2021; 2021:3683189. Abstract
Background The aim of this study was at investigating the association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and periodontitis based on crosstalk genes and neuropeptides. Methods Datasets for periodontitis (GSE10334, GSE16134, and GSE23586) and MDD (GSE38206 and GSE39653) were downloaded from GEO. Following batch correction, a differential expression analysis was applied (MDD: ∣log2FC | >0 and periodontitis ∣log2FC | ≥0.5, p < 0.05). The neuropeptide data were downloaded from NeuroPep and NeuroPedia. Intersected genes were potential crosstalk genes. The correlation between neuropeptides and crosstalk genes in MDD and periodontitis was analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient. Subsequently, regression analysis was performed to calculate the differentially regulated link. Cytoscape was used to map the pathways of crosstalk genes and neuropeptides and to construct the protein-protein interaction network. Lasso regression was applied to screen neuropeptides, whereby boxplots were created, and receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis was conducted. Results The MDD dataset contained 30 case and 33 control samples, and the periodontitis dataset contained 430 case and 139 control samples. 35 crosstalk genes were obtained. A total of 102 neuropeptides were extracted from the database, which were not differentially expressed in MDD and periodontitis and had no intersection with crosstalk genes. Through lasso regression, 9 neuropeptides in MDD and 43 neuropeptides in periodontitis were obtained. Four intersected neuropeptide genes were obtained, i.e., ADM, IGF2, PDYN, and RETN. The results of ROC analysis showed that IGF2 was highly predictive in MDD and periodontitis. ADM was better than the other three genes in predicting MDD disease. A total of 13 crosstalk genes were differentially coexpressed with four neuropeptides, whereby FOSB was highly expressed in MDD and periodontitis. Conclusion The neuropeptide genes ADM, IGF2, PDYN, and RETN were intersected between periodontitis and MDD, and FOSB was a crosstalk gene related to these neuropeptides on the transcriptomic level. These results are a basis for future research in the field, needing further validation.

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recognized as a universal method of cellular communications and are reportedly produced in bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. Bacterial EVs are often called “Outer Membrane Vesicles” (OMVs) as they were the result of a controlled blebbing of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis). Bacterial EVs are natural messengers, implicated in intra- and inter-species cell-to-cell communication among microorganism populations present in microbiota. Bacteria can incorporate their pathogens into OMVs; the content of OMVs differs, depending on the type of bacteria. The production of distinct types of OMVs can be mediated by different factors and routes. A recent study highlighted OMVs ability to carry crucial molecules implicated in immune modulation, and, nowadays, they are considered as a way to communicate and transfer messages from the bacteria to the host and vice versa. This review article focuses on the current understanding of OMVs produced from major oral bacteria, P. gingivalis: generation, characteristics, and contents as well as the involvement in signal transduction of host cells and systemic diseases. Our recent study regarding the action of P. gingivalis OMVs in the living body is also summarized.

Influence of Depression and Anxiety on Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment Outcomes: A 6-Month Prospective Study. Abstract
Periodontal treatment could be worsened by risk factors. Depression and anxiety have been suggested as potentially influencing periodontal treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine their association with non-surgical periodontal treatment outcomes in patients with generalized severe periodontitis (stage III/IV generalized periodontitis) at 6 months. A total of 68 patients diagnosed with generalized severe periodontitis were treated with scaling and root planing (SRP) and were followed at 3 and 6 months. The data of the 54 patients that followed the entire protocol were considered for analysis. Depression and anxiety levels were determined at baseline by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and State-Trait Inventory (STAI) questionnaires. The association between psychological scores and periodontal parameters was evaluated by multivariate analysis. At 3 and 6 months, SRP induced an improvement for all periodontal parameters (plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL)). BDI and STAI scores were associated with the evolution of PI, BOP, mean PPD and number of sites with PPD > 3 mm and with CAL > 3 mm. Depression and anxiety should be considered as risk factors for SRP and the identification of at-risk patients should be performed using well-established tools.

Abstract
GOAL The aim of this study was to analyze the association between chronic gingivitis and subsequent depression in patients aged ≥14 years who were followed up in general practices in the UK. METHODS This study included patients aged ≥14 years who had received an initial diagnosis of chronic gingivitis in one of 256 general practices in the United Kingdom between January 2000 and December 2016 (index date). Patients without chronic gingivitis were matched (1:1) to those with chronic gingivitis by sex, age, index year, treating physician, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). For patients without chronic gingivitis, the index date was a randomly selected visit date between 2000 and 2016. The association between chronic gingivitis and the incidence of depression was investigated using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS This study included 6544 patients with chronic gingivitis and 6544 patients without chronic gingivitis [49.2% were women; mean (standard deviation) age 40.3 (19.1) years]. A total of 16.3% of individuals with chronic gingivitis and 8.8% of those without chronic gingivitis received an initial diagnosis of depression within 10 years of the index date (log-rank p-value<0.001). There was a positive and significant association between chronic gingivitis and depression in the overall sample [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.82, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.55-2.48]. These findings were corroborated in men and women and in all age groups with the exception of patients aged >65 years. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated an association between chronic gingivitis and subsequent depression.

Abstract
Depression causes damage to the immune defense mechanism, and it can worsen periodontitis due to the accumulation of periodontitis pathogens. This study was conducted in order to explore the association of diagnosed depression and self-reported depression symptom with periodontitis by using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 7th (KNHANES VII) data. A total of 12,689 participants aged over 19 received a periodontal examination among the 24,269 participants of KNHANES VII. Diagnosed depression and self-reported depression symptom were the two terms used for depression. Periodontitis was defined as the presence of teeth with periodontal pockets of 4 mm or deeper. The age, sex, marital status, education, region, basic livelihood protection, private health insurance, type of housing, health insurance coverage, household income, sleeping hours, subjective health condition, stress perception, drinking status, obesity, and current smoking status of the participants were examined. Chi-square tests and two-tailed analyses were used. The association of depression and periodontitis was tested by using logistic regression models adjusted for socio-demographic and behavioral variables. Diagnosed depression was associated with periodontitis, as the odds ratio of diagnosed depression for periodontitis was 1.772 (95% confidence interval = 1.328-2.364). However, the association between self-reported depression symptom and periodontitis was not statistically significant. This study revealed that diagnosed depression, not self-reported depression symptom, could be a risk factor for periodontitis. Therefore, it is necessary to take a closer look into diagnosed depression in order to manage and prevent periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the psychometric properties of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) in patients with periodontitis and to evaluate the psychological features of patients with periodontitis. METHODS Overall, 460 individuals with periodontitis were enrolled. The HADS and the PSS-10 were administered to all patients. Methodology testing included the exploratory factor analysis, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), test-retest reliability, as well as internal consistency. RESULTS Regarding the CFA results of the HADS, as well as the PSS-10, a bifactor model fitted the data best. The Cronbach alpha value, as well as the intra-class correlation coefficients value of the two measures were all >0.70. The anxiety, depression, distress manifestations, and moderate-to-high perceived stress prevalence were 35.2%, 18.2%, 24.6%, and 43.9%, respectively. Severity of periodontitis, age, smoking, and disease comorbidities were identified as independent prognosticators of the presence of psychological manifestations in periodontitis. CONCLUSION The HADS and the PSS-10 can be used as general measures for psychological assessment in patients with periodontitis.

Abstract
Despite the integration of salivary inflammatory cytokines into research across the biobehavioral, psychological, clinical, and health-related disciplines, there is little guidance regarding the biospecimen collection, handling, and storage practices that maximize the quality and validity of salivary cytokine data. Furthermore, associations between salivary cytokines and measures related to oral health are rarely assessed and accounted for in studies outside the oral health fields. To address these gaps, we examine the sensitivity of salivary interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) to changes in saliva sample collection technique and cold chain management procedures. Using subsets of saliva samples collected from 150 healthy adults, we measure salivary IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and other oral health-related indices (i.e., blood contamination [transferrin], and salivary matrixmallotprotienase-8). In addition to examining changes in cytokine levels associated with sample collection technique and cold chain management procedures, we assess relations between cytokine concentrations and levels of other oral health-related measures. We found that IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 were more robust to changes in sample collection and cold chain management procedures than TNF-α, and all cytokines were positively associated with other oral health-related measures. Based on our findings, we recommend analyte-specific guidance for measuring and interpreting salivary cytokine concentrations.

Abstract
The prevalence of anxiety, mood and trauma- and stress-related disorders are on the rise; however, efforts to develop new and effective treatment strategies have had limited success. To identify novel therapeutic targets, a comprehensive understanding of the disease etiology is needed, especially in the context of the holobiont, i.e., the superorganism consisting of a human and its microbiotas. Much emphasis has been placed on the role of the gut microbiota in the development, exacerbation, and persistence of psychiatric disorders; however, data for the oral microbiota are limited. The oral cavity houses the second most diverse microbial community in the body, with over 700 bacterial species that colonize the soft and hard tissues. Periodontal diseases encompass a group of infectious and inflammatory diseases that affect the periodontium. Among them, periodontitis is defined as a chronic, multi-bacterial infection that elicits low-grade systemic inflammation via the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as local invasion and long-distance translocation of periodontal pathogens. Periodontitis can also induce or exacerbate other chronic systemic inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis and diabetes and can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Recently, periodontal pathogens have been implicated in the etiology and pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders (such as depression and schizophrenia), especially as dysregulation of the immune system also plays an integral role in the etiology and pathophysiology of these disorders. This review will discuss the role of the oral microbiota associated with periodontal diseases in anxiety, mood and trauma- and stress-related disorders. Epidemiological data of periodontal diseases in individuals with these disorders will be presented, followed by a discussion of the microbiological and immunological links between the oral microbiota and the central nervous system. Pre-clinical and clinical findings on the oral microbiota related to periodontal diseases in anxiety, mood and trauma- and stress-related phenotypes will be reviewed, followed by a discussion on the bi-directionality of the oral-brain axis. Lastly, we will focus on the oral microbiota associated with periodontal diseases as a target for future therapeutic interventions to alleviate symptoms of these debilitating psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the association between self-reported depressive symptoms and oral diseases in US adults, including periodontitis, caries, missing teeth and untreated dental caries. Design This study was designed as a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional survey. We conducted descriptive, multivariable logistic and Poisson regression analyses on weighted data. Setting US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2014 data. Participants Individuals aged ≥30 years who completed a periodontal examination and depression screening (n=9799). Results 21.6% (28.9 million) of adults aged ≥30 years reported depressive symptoms, with a higher prevalence among females, current smokers and participants with lower income and education status. More than half of the adults with moderate depressive symptoms had periodontal diseases, and more than one-third had teeth with untreated dental caries. After adjusting for sociodemographics, behavioural factors, having diabetes and psychotherapeutic medication use, depressive symptoms were associated with poorer oral health. Severe depressive symptoms were associated with higher odds of mild periodontitis (2.20; 99% CI 1.03 to 4.66). For those with mild depressive symptoms, the mean number of missing teeth was 1.20 (99% CI 1.06 to 1.37) times the average of non-symptomatic individuals; and 1.38 times (99% CI 1.15 to 1.66) among individuals with moderate depressive symptoms. Conclusions Depressive symptoms were associated with mild periodontitis and a greater number of missing teeth, while having teeth with untreated dental caries was attributed to sociodemographic factors. Awareness of oral health status among patients with depressive symptoms can inform both dental and mental health providers to develop tailored treatment and help patients achieve overall wellness.

Abstract
The relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases, notably including atherosclerosis and diabetes, has been studied for several years. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a prominent component of oral microorganism communities, is the main pathogen that causes periodontitis. As a result of the extensive analysis of this organism, the evidence of its connection to systemic diseases has become more apparent over the last decade. A significant amount of research has explored the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, while relatively few studies have examined its contribution to respiratory diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and depression. Here, we provide an overview of the current state of knowledge about Porphyromonas gingivalis and its systemic impact in an aim to inform readers of the existing epidemiological evidence and the most recent preclinical studies. Additionally, the possible mechanisms by which Porphyromonas gingivalis is involved in the onset or exacerbation of diseases, together with its effects on systemic health, are covered. Although a few results remain controversial, it is now evident that Porphyromonas gingivalis should be regarded as a modifiable factor for several diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of periodontal disease with depression and anxiety via a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHOD We systematically searched the EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and SinoMed databases (until August 4, 2019) with language restricted to English and Chinese. Case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies that calculated the risk ratio (RR), odds ratio (OR)/prevalence OR (POR), and hazard ratio (HR) of depression/anxiety with periodontal disease or the OR/POR/RR/HR of periodontal disease caused by depression/anxiety were included. Observational studies that reported the depression/anxiety scale score of patients with periodontal disease and healthy periodontal subjects aged ≥14 years were also included. We used the standard format to extract the following information from each included study: author/s, survey year, study design, age of participants, periodontal disease definition, depression/anxiety measurement, and summary of results. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to ascertain the quality of the included citations. RESULTS After screening, 40 studies were included. A meta-analysis of the case-control studies showed that periodontal disease was positively associated with depression (OR = 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-2.83). A meta-analysis of 12 studies showed that periodontal disease was significantly correlated with anxiety (OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.11-1.66). A meta-analysis of 18 studies showed that subjects with periodontal disease had higher depression scale score (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.68-1.41) and anxiety scale score (SMD = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.44-0.96). CONCLUSION Periodontal disease is associated with emotional disorders. However, the high degree of heterogeneity among studies should be considered. More high-quality prospective studies are required to confirm the relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated utilisation behaviour of the dentist compared to general practitioners (GP) and medical specialists in a German cohort under consideration of risk indicators for irregular dental attendance. METHODS Analysis of the results of the population-based LIFE-Adult-Study (Leipzig, Germany) was performed. A total of 2231 participants of the LIFE-Adult-Study were randomly selected to complete the relevant questionnaire, considering medical attendance behaviour. Associations of self-reported medical conditions, including dentaland medical attendance, sociodemographic factors, as well as self-reported general health status and oral health complaints were determined. RESULTS Of the 2231 participants who were included in the analysis, 14.2% reported not to have visited the dentist during the preceding 12 months. There could be shown a more selective utilisation behaviour towards medical services in smokers, men, low socioeconomic status and depression. Women were more likely to attend the dentist than men (OR = 1.8, CI = 1.4-2.3). Smoking (OR = 0.7, CI = 0.6-1.0), low socioeconomic status (OR = 0.6, CI = 0.4-0.8) and depression (OR = 0.6, CI = 0.4-0.9) were related to less dental attendance. Additionally, persons who do not visit the dentist regularly showed less attendance of the GP as well as medical specialists (p <0.05). Depression could be shown to be an additional risk factor for unfavourable utilisation behaviour towards the dentist. CONCLUSIONS The results showed differences in dental and medical attendance, depending on different patient-related factors. Focusing attention towards high-risk groups might improve dental as well as medical utilisation behaviour, and therefore health status as well.

Abstract
Whether periodontitis is a risk factor for developing bipolar disorders (BD) has not been investigated. We aimed to determine whether periodontitis is associated with the subsequent development of BD and examine the risk factors for BD among patients with periodontitis.Using ambulatory and inpatient claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we identified 12,337 patients who were aged at least 20 years and newly diagnosed with periodontitis between 2000 and 2004. The date of the first claim with a periodontitis diagnosis was set as the index date. For each patient with periodontitis, 4 subjects without a history of periodontitis were randomly selected from the NHIRD and frequency-matched with the patients with periodontitis according to sex, age (in 5-year bands), and index year.The periodontitis group had a mean age of 44.0 ± 13.7 years and slight predominance of men (51.3%). Compared with the subjects without periodontitis, the patients with periodontitis had higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, stroke, head injury, major depressive disorder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma (P < .001). The incidence rate of BD was higher in the periodontitis group than in the non-periodontitis group (2.74 vs 1.46 per 1000 person-year), with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.82 (95% confidence interval = 1.59-2.08) after adjustment for sex, age, and comorbidities.The patients with periodontitis exhibited a significantly higher risk of developing BD. Keep the better oral hygiene to reduce periodontitis might be a preventive strategy for BD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poststroke depression (PSD) is one of the most common complications after ischemic stroke, and periodontitis is associated with depression. However, whether severe periodontitis is associated with early-onset PSD status remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is an association between severe periodontitis and PSD status in acute ischemic stroke patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited 202 acute ischemic stroke patients within 7 days after stroke onset. Pocket depth and clinical attachment loss were assessed by oral examination to define the severe periodontitis. On the basis of diagnosis of PSD status according to DSM-5 criteria and a 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score greater than or equal to 8 within 2 weeks after stroke onset, we stratified patients into PSD status or non-PSD status groups and identified the independent predictors for the development of PSD status in multivariate logistic analysis. RESULTS 77 (38.1%) patients were diagnosed as early-onset PSD status. PSD status group showed more severe periodontitis, lower income, lower Barthel Index (BI) score and Montreal Cognitive Assessment score, higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score and modified Rankin scale (mRS) score compared with non-PSD status group. Multivariate logistic regression showed that severe periodontitis (odds ratio 2.401) and NIHSS score (>4, odds ratio 2.130) were independent predictors for early-onset PSD status. CONCLUSIONS Severe periodontitis is found to be an important independent predictor of early-onset PSD status in patients with acute ischemic stroke, in addition to the well-known prognostic factors such as nonminor stroke assessed by NIHSS greater than 4.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of methodological approaches to assess the relationship between dental diseases and other noncommunicable diseases on the basis of claims data. METHODS Based on the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley, a scoping study was conducted. By searching electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and LILACS), appropriate articles were identified. After extracting relevant information and entering it into a data-charting form, the study characteristics and the methodological approaches were summarized descriptively. RESULTS Fifty-one articles were identified for inclusion in the analysis. Most of the selected studies (78 percent) originated from Taiwan and employed a cohort design. The majority of studies considered dental diseases, particularly periodontal disease (PD) measures, but no common standard was identified for the definition of PD. Unmeasured confounding, misclassification, and surveillance bias were reported to be the main limitations of the claims data analyses. CONCLUSIONS Claims data provide a very useful information source to further delineate the relationship between PDs and other noncommunicable diseases. If diagnostic codes are available, they seem to be the most suitable tool to assess PD in claims-based studies. In databases that do not contain dental diagnostic codes, e.g., databases in Germany and the United States, the identification of PD is a particular challenge. The inclusion of dental diagnostic codes in all claims databases is strongly recommended. Due to the public health relevance of PD, there is a need for more comprehensive documentation of dental parameters within claims data.

Abstract
Increasing evidence implies a possible causal link between periodontitis and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and major depression (MD). A possible mechanism underlying such a link can be explained by neuroinflammation induced by chronic systemic inflammation. This review article focuses on an overview of the biological and epidemiological evidence for a feasible causal link of periodontitis to neuropsychiatric disorders, including AD, MD, Parkinson's disease, and schizophrenia, as well as the neurological event, ischemic stroke. If there is such a link, a broad spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders associated with neuroinflammation could be preventable and modifiable by simple daily dealings for oral hygiene. However, the notion that periodontitis is a risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders remains to be effectively substantiated.

Abstract
AIM We sought (a) to assess the association between periodontal disease and diabetes, controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, comorbidities, oral health status and lifestyle variables; (b) to identify which of these variables are independently associated with periodontal disease among diabetes sufferers. METHODS We conducted a case-control study using data from the National/European Health Interview Surveys, conducted from 2003 to 2014 in Spain. We included 65 295 subjects ≥40 years. Diabetes status was self-reported. One non-diabetic control was matched by the year-of-survey, age and sex for each diabetic patient. The presence of periodontal disease was defined using the answer "my teeth bleed spontaneously or while brushing" or/and "my teeth move" to the following question: "Do you suffer of any of these dental and oral disorders or disease?". Independent variables included demographic, socio-economic and healthcare related variables, oral health status and comorbidities. RESULTS The prevalence of periodontal disease was higher among those suffering from diabetes than their non-diabetes controls (23.8% vs 19.5%; P < 0.001). Adjusted OR of periodontal disease for subjects with diabetes was 1.22 (95% CI; 1.03-1.45). Among diabetes sufferers, missing teeth status (OR 2.08, 95% CI; 1.70-2.53), suffering osteoporosis (OR 1.41, 95% CI; 1.07-1.63) and suffering depression (OR 1.39, 95% CI; 1.12-1.71) were positively associated with higher risk of periodontal disease. Older ages, using private insurance and university education level were associated with lower rates of periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS Diabetes subjects have an increased likelihood of periodontal disease. Dentists and physicians should increase their awareness with their diabetic patients, especially those with lower educational level, with missing teeth, osteoporosis and depression.

Abstract
The protozoan Entamoeba gingivalis resides in the oral cavity and is frequently observed in the periodontal pockets of humans and pets. This species of Entamoeba is closely related to the human pathogen Entamoeba histolytica, the agent of amoebiasis. Although E. gingivalis is highly enriched in people with periodontitis (a disease in which inflammation and bone loss correlate with changes in the microbial flora), the potential role of this protozoan in oral infectious diseases is not known. Periodontitis affects half the adult population in the world, eventually leads to edentulism, and has been linked to other pathologies, like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. As aging is a risk factor for the disorder, it is considered an inevitable physiological process, even though it can be prevented and cured. However, the impact of periodontitis on the patient's health and quality of life, as well as its economic burden, are underestimated. Commonly accepted models explain the progression from health to gingivitis and then periodontitis by a gradual change in the identity and proportion of bacterial microorganisms in the gingival crevices. Though not pathognomonic, inflammation is always present in periodontitis. The recruitment of leukocytes to inflamed gums and their passage to the periodontal pocket lumen are speculated to fuel both tissue destruction and the development of the flora. The individual contribution to the disease of each bacterial species is difficult to establish and the eventual role of protozoa in the fate of this disease has been ignored. Following recent scientific findings, we discuss the relevance of these data and propose that the status of E. gingivalis be reconsidered as a potential pathogen contributing to periodontitis.

Background Periodontal disease is more prevalent and more severe among men and women suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared with healthy adults. The objectives of this paper were to assess the association between periodontal disease and COPD, controlling the effect of sociodemographic characteristics, oral health status, lifestyle variables, and comorbidities. Second, we identified which of the variables analyzed were independently associated with periodontal disease among COPD sufferers. Methods This descriptive study was done with data from the National/European Health Interview Surveys, conducted in years 2006, 2011/12, and 2014 in Spain. We included subjects ≥40 years of age. COPD status was self-reported. One non-COPD patient was matched by age, gender, and the year of survey for each COPD case. The presence of periodontal disease was defined using the answers "my teeth bleed spontaneously or while brushing" or/and "my teeth move" to the question: "Do you suffer of any of these dental and oral disorders or diseases?" Independent variables included demographic, socioeconomic, and health care-related variables, oral health status, and presence of comorbidities. Results The prevalence of periodontal disease was higher among COPD patients than their matched non-COPD controls (26.5% vs 22.2%; P<0.001). Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of periodontal disease for subjects with COPD was 1.21 (95% CI: 1.12-1.30). Suffering mental disorders (AOR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.32-1.97) was positively associated with higher risk of periodontal disease. Older age, having a private dental health insurance, and university education were variables associated with lower rates of periodontal disease. Conclusion Prevalence of periodontal disease was higher among those with COPD compared to non-COPD controls. Dentists and physicians should increase their awareness with their COPD patients, especially those who are younger, with lower education, and suffer depression and/or anxiety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To systematically review the literature in order to investigate association between depression and oral diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS Electronic searches were performed in five databases. Studies testing associations between depression and oral diseases as either exposure or outcome were included. Oral disease variable included any tooth loss or edentulism, periodontal disease, and dental caries. RESULTS A total of 2504 articles were identified in the electronic database search. Sixteen studies were included in this systematic review being 14 included in the meta-analyses. Eleven studies considered oral health as outcome, whereas three studies considered depression as an outcome variable. Depression was associated to dental caries, tooth loss, and edentulism. Pooled estimates showed that depression increased the odds of dental caries (OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.13-1.44), tooth loss (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.24-1.37), and edentulism (OR 1.17; 95% CI 1.02-1.34), respectively. When the oral diseases were tested as independent variable and depression as outcome, associations with both edentulism (OR 1.28; 95% CI 1.06-1.55) and periodontal disease (HR 1.73; 95% CI 1.58-1.89) were found. CONCLUSIONS The results of our systematic review and meta-analyses show a positive association between depression and oral diseases, specifically dental caries, tooth loss, and edentulism, in adults and elders. More longitudinal studies are required to test causal and temporal relationship between depression and oral health status. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Mental and oral health are among the main disabilities worldwide. This article helps to understand more about the relationship between both conditions, highlighting the importance for both clinicians and policy makers of considering individual's psychological status in management of oral health.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that infection and persistent low-grade inflammation in peripheral tissues are important pathogenic factors in major depression. Major depression is frequently comorbid with systemic inflammatory diseases/conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, allergies of different types, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, diabetes, and cancer, in which pro-inflammatory cytokines are overexpressed. A number of animal studies demonstrate that systemic inflammation induced by peripheral administration of lipopolysaccharide increases the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in both the periphery and brain and causes abnormal behavior similar to major depression. Systemic inflammation can cause an increase in CNS levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with glial activation, namely, neuroinflammation, through several postulated pathways. Such neuroinflammation can in turn induce depressive moods and behavioral changes by affecting brain functions relevant to major depression, especially neurotransmitter metabolism. Although various clinical studies imply a causal relationship between periodontitis, which is one of the most common chronic inflammatory disorders in adults, and major depression, the notion that periodontitis is a risk factor for major depression is still unproven. Additional population-based cohort studies or prospective clinical studies on the relationship between periodontitis and major depression are needed to substantiate the causal link of periodontitis to major depression. If such a link is established, periodontitis may be a modifiable risk factor for major depression by simple preventive oral treatment.

Abstract
Periodontal disease is of established etiology in which polymicrobial synergistic ecology has become dysbiotic under the influence of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Following breakdown of the host's protective oral tissue barriers, P. gingivalis migrates to developing inflammatory pathologies that associate with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Periodontal disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular disorders (CVD), type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM), AD and other chronic diseases, whilst T2DM exacerbates periodontitis. This study analyzed the relationship between the P. gingivalis/host interactome and the genes identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for the aforementioned conditions using data from GWASdb (P < 1E-03) and, in some cases, from the NCBI/EBI GWAS database (P < 1E-05). Gene expression data from periodontitis or P. gingivalis microarray was compared to microarray datasets from the AD hippocampus and/or from carotid artery plaques. The results demonstrated that the host genes of the P. gingivalis interactome were significantly enriched in genes deposited in GWASdb genes related to cognitive disorders, AD and dementia, and its co-morbid conditions T2DM, obesity, and CVD. The P. gingivalis/host interactome was also enriched in GWAS genes from the more stringent NCBI-EBI database for AD, atherosclerosis and T2DM. The misregulated genes in periodontitis tissue or P. gingivalis infected macrophages also matched those in the AD hippocampus or atherosclerotic plaques. Together, these data suggest important gene/environment interactions between P. gingivalis and susceptibility genes or gene expression changes in conditions where periodontal disease is a contributory factor.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of insect tea on HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in ICR mice. The serum levels of vasoactive intestinal peptide, substance P, somatostatin, motilin and endothelin-1 in mice were assessed using commercial kits and gastric tissues of superoxide dismutase (SOD, nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined using western blot analysis Insect tea significantly reduced HCl/ethanol-induced gastric juice secretion and increased the pH of gastric juice (P<0.05). Insect tea treatment signfiicantly increased vasoactive intestinal peptide and somatostatin, and significantly decreased motilin, substance P and endothelin levels in the serum (P<0.05). Treatment with insect tea was demonstrated to significantly increase levels of gastric SOD and NO and to reduce levels of MDA in the gastric ulcer mouse model (P<0.05). The gastric expression of inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), epidermal growth factor (EGF), EGF receptor, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), endothelial NOS, Mn-SOD, Cu/Zn-SOD and catalase was significantly increased in mice treated with inset tea compared with untreated model mice (P<0.05). Levels of NF-κB, and inducible NOS were demonstrated to be decreased in mice treated with insect tea compared with untreated model mice (P<0.05). The results of the present study suggest that insect tea has a protective effect against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in ICR mice. This effect may be achieved via modulating serum neuropeptide levels, reducing gastric juice secretion, and modulating the inflammation- and antioxidant-associated protein expressions in gastric tissue.

Increased Root Canal Endotoxin Levels are Associated with Chronic Apical Periodontitis, Increased Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress, Major Depression, Severity of Depression, and a Lowered Quality of Life. Abstract
Evidence indicates that major depression is accompanied by increased translocation of gut commensal Gram-negative bacteria (leaky gut) and consequent activation of oxidative and nitrosative (O&NS) pathways. This present study examined the associations among chronic apical periodontitis (CAP), root canal endotoxin levels (lipopolysaccharides, LPS), O&NS pathways, depressive symptoms, and quality of life. Measurements included advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), nitric oxide metabolites (NOx), lipid peroxides (LOOH), -sulfhydryl (SH) groups, total radical trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), and paraoxonase (PON)1 activity in participants with CAP, with and without depression, as well as healthy controls (no depression, no CAP). Root canal LPS levels were positively associated with CAP, clinical depression, severity of depression (as measured with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and the Beck Depression Inventory) and O&NS biomarkers, especially NOx and TRAP. CAP-related depression was accompanied by increased levels of NOx, LOOH, AOPP, and TRAP. In CAP participants, there was a strong correlation (r = 0.734, p < 0.001) between root canal LPS and the HDRS score. There were significant and positive associations between CAP or root canal endotoxin with the vegetative and physio-somatic symptoms of the HDRS as well as a significant inverse association between root canal endotoxin and quality of life with strong effects on psychological, environmental, and social domains. It is concluded that increased root canal LPS accompanying CAP may cause depression and a lowered quality of life, which may be partly explained by activated O&NS pathways, especially NOx thereby enhancing hypernitrosylation and thus neuroprogressive processes. Dental health and "leaky teeth" may be intimately linked to the etiology and course of depression, while significantly impacting quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many psychological disorders are associated with comorbid physical illness. There are less data on dental disease in common psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety in spite of risk factors in this population of diet, lifestyle or antidepressant-induced dry mouth. METHODS We undertook a systematic search for studies of the oral health of people with common psychological disorders including depression, anxiety and dental phobia. We searched MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE and article bibliographies. Results were compared with the general population. Outcomes included partial or total tooth-loss, periodontal disease, and dental decay measured through standardized measures such as the mean number of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) or surfaces (DMFS). RESULTS There were 19 papers on depression and/or anxiety, and seven on dental phobia/anxiety (total n=26). These covered 334,503 subjects. All the psychiatric diagnoses were associated with increased dental decay on both DMFT and DMFS scores, as well as greater tooth loss (OR=1.22; 95%CI=1.14-1.30). There was no association with periodontal disease, except for panic disorder. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design of included studies, heterogeneity in some results, insufficient studies to test for publication bias. CONCLUSION The increased focus on the physical health of psychiatric patients should encompass oral health including closer collaboration between dental and medical practitioners. Possible interventions include oral health assessment using standard checklists that can be completed by non-dental personnel, help with oral hygiene, management of iatrogenic dry mouth, and early dental referral. Mental health clinicians should also be aware of the oral consequences of inappropriate diet and psychotropic medication.

Abstract
In oral health, the interdental spaces are a real ecological niche for which the body has few or no alternative defenses and where the traditional daily methods for control by disrupting biofilm are not adequate. The interdental spaces are the source of many hypotheses regarding their potential associations with and/or causes of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, degenerative disease, and depression. This PCR study is the first to describe the interdental microbiota in healthy adults aged 18–35 years-old with reference to the Socransky complexes. The complexes tended to reflect microbial succession events in developing dental biofilms. Early colonizers included members of the yellow, green, and purple complexes. The orange complex bacteria generally appear after the early colonizers and include many putative periodontal pathogens, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum. The red complex (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola) was considered the climax community and is on the list of putative periodontal pathogens. The 19 major periodontal pathogens tested were expressed at various levels. F. nucleatum was the most abundant species, and the least abundant were Actinomyces viscosus, P. gingivalis, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. The genome counts for Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter concisus, Campylobacter rectus, T. denticola, and Tannerella forsythensis increased significantly with subject age. The study highlights the observation that bacteria from the yellow complex (Streptococcus spp., S. mitis), the green complex (E. corrodens, Campylobacter gracilis, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Capnocytophaga sputigena, A. actinomycetemcomitans), the purple complex (Veillonella parvula, Actinomyces odontolyticus) and the blue complex (A. viscosus) are correlated. Concerning the orange complex, F. nucleatum is the most abundant species in interdental biofilm. The red complex, which is recognized as the most important pathogen in adult periodontal disease, represents 8.08% of the 19 bacteria analyzed. P. gingivalis was detected in 19% of healthy subjects and represents 0.02% of the interdental biofilm. T. forsythensis and T. denticola (0.02 and 0.04% of the interdental biofilm) were detected in 93 and 49% of healthy subjects, respectively. The effective presence of periodontal pathogens is a strong indicator of the need to develop new methods for disrupting interdental biofilm in daily oral hygiene.
