Abstract
AIMS We analysed the survival, complications, and function of frozen autograft augmented with intramedullary cement and bridging plates fixation for intercalary bone defect reconstruction in primary bone sarcomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 72 patients with primary bone sarcomas (34 males, 38 females) between January 2016 and June 2023. The average age was 22.0 ± 13.6 years (6 to 61 years) and the pathological type included osteosarcoma (55), followed by adamantinoma (5), Ewing's sarcoma (4), undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (4), chondrosarcoma (3), and malignant tenosynovial giant cell tumor (1). The oncological outcomes included local control, metastasis, progression-free survival and overall survival. The functional outcomes were evaluated by the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Score (MSTS-93), the Toronto Extremity Salvage Score (TESS), and the motion of the joint. RESULTS The mean follow-up time was 50.0 ± 27.4 months (12 to 99 months). 10 patients died of the disease, 9 patients were alive with disease and 53 patients were alive with no evidence of disease. The average 5-year overall survival of autograft was 85.8% (95% CI, 72.1-93.1%). The average MSTS-93 score was 96% ( 67-100%) and the average TESS score was 98% (74-100%). Twenty-four patients (33.3%) had at least one complication in the follow-up period. The most common complications were nonunion (9.7%, 7/72) and local recurrence (9.7%, 7/72), followed by leg length discrepancy (6.9%, 5/72), infection (5.6%, 4/72), implant failure (4.2%, 3/72), delayed union (2.8%, 2/72), and graft fractures (1.4%, 1/72). Tumor site was an independent risk factor for bone nonunion (OR, 22.23; p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS We presented a large technique series for preventing autograft-related complications (especially for autograft fractures) of intercalary frozen autograft reconstruction. This method showed promising functional outcomes and provided durable reconstruction. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE level IV therapeutic study.

Abstract
The gold standard treatment for primary bone sarcomas has been surgical resection with wide margins. However, there is no consensus regarding an optimal method for limb salvage reconstruction. In 2005, a technique for recycling resected bone after intraoperative treatment with liquid nitrogen was described. This technique has been reported to have a spectrum of advantages; nonetheless, acceptance for routine use has been limited, primarily for fear of local recurrence. A systematic search of the literature using PubMed and Google Scholar was performed. Full-text articles published between 2008 and 2023 were included if the study presented sufficient information regarding patients with a diagnosis of a primary bone sarcoma of the limbs or pelvis who had undergone reconstruction with liquid nitrogen recycled autografts. Sixteen studies that included 286 patients met criteria for analyses. Local recurrence occurred in 25 patients (8.7 %) during the first 4 years following limb salvage reconstruction using recycled autografts for treatment of primary bone sarcomas, which compares favorably to the 15-30 % local recurrence rates reported for patients undergoing limb salvage reconstruction using artificial implants. Systematic synthesis of the current evidence regarding local recurrence rates following use of the liquid nitrogen recycled autograft technique for limb salvage reconstruction after bone sarcoma resection suggests a favorable comparison to other limb salvage reconstruction options. As such, this technique warrants further consideration as a viable option for indicated patients based on relative advantages regarding costs, availability, and biologic and surgical reconstruction benefits.

Abstract
Background The frozen inactivation of autologous tumor bones using liquid nitrogen is an important surgical method for limb salvage in patients with sarcoma. At present, there are few research reports related to frozen inactivated autograft replantation. Methods In this study, we retrospectively collected the clinical data of patients with bone and soft tissue sarcoma treated with liquid nitrogen-frozen inactivated tumor bone replantation, and analyzed the safety and efficacy of this surgical method. The healing status of the frozen inactivated autografts was evaluated using the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) scoring system. Functional status of patients was assessed using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scale. Results This study included 43 patients. The average length of the bone defect after tumor resection is 16.9 cm (range 6.3-35.3 cm). Patients with autograft not including the knee joint surface had significantly better healing outcomes (ISOLS scores) (80.6% ± 15% vs 28.2% ± 4.9%, P<0.001) and limb function (MSTS score) (87% ± 11.6% vs 27.2% ± 4.4%, P<0.001) than patients with autografts including the knee joint surface. The healing time of the end of inactivated autografts near the metaphyseal was significantly shorter than that of the end far away from the metaphyseal (9.8 ± 6.3 months vs 14.9 ± 6.3 months, P=0.0149). One patient had local recurrence, one had an autograft infection, five (all of whom had an autograft including the knee joint surface) had joint deformities, and seven had bone non-union. Conclusion Frozen inactivated autologous tumor bone replantation is safe and results in good bone healing. But this method is not suitable for patients with autograft involving the knee joint surface.

Abstract
Introduction The recommended treatment method for bone sarcoma is wide local excision and reconstruction to preserve limb function. Established methods of reconstruction are mega prosthesis or biological reconstruction. This study aimed to determine the complications and functional outcomes associated with limb salvage surgery using liquid nitrogen-treated bone. Materials and Methods We retrospectively observed the short-term outcome of limb salvage surgeries where liquid nitrogen bone was used for reconstruction. A total of 15 patients underwent reconstruction with liquid nitrogen auto graft from January 2018 to December 2020. We used the free freezing method of liquid nitrogen treatment after wide local excision of sarcoma. We observed short-term outcomes after liquid nitrogen-treated bone reconstruction in limb salvage surgery. Survival of the auto grafts was recorded using the Kaplan-Meier method with a 95% confidence interval. Results The mean follow-up was 19.83 ± 4.5 months. The mean musculoskeletal tumor society score was 62.4 ± 7.9%, while the average Toronto extremity score was 59.6 ± 5.7%. Three patients died during the study duration due to visceral metastasis. Skin necrosis and wound breakdown were major complications in 9 (60%) patients. Deep infection was observed in 4 (26.7%). Similarly, 4 (26.7%) patients had non-union at either the proximal or distal osteotomy site, while the average time of bone union in the rest of the patients was 6.3 ± 1.7 months. A total of 6 (40%) patients underwent reoperation after liquid nitrogen treatment, either due to infection or non-union at the osteotomy site. Recurrence was observed in 3 (20%) of patients. Conclusion We observed a high complication rate with liquid nitrogen-treated autograft reconstruction. Vascularized fibula with liquid nitrogen-treated autograft or endoprosthesis should be encouraged.

Abstract
Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the distal tibia can result in significant bone loss and soft tissue compromise, which can present a challenge for reconstruction. Various techniques have been described for the reconstruction of large defects, including the use of allografts. In this article, we describe a novel technique of reconstruction of a large defect in the distal tibia using two femoral head allografts after resection of GCT. The technique involves using two femoral head allografts, which are shaped to fit the defect and secured with a locking plate and screws. Using this technique, we present a case report of a patient with GCT of the distal tibia who underwent resection and reconstruction. At the 18-month follow-up, the patient had good functional outcomes and no evidence of tumor recurrence. This technique offers a viable option for reconstructing large defects in the distal tibia after GCT resection, particularly in cases where autograft is not available or not feasible. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term outcomes and complications associated with this technique.

Abstract
PurposeTo examine clinical outcomes of a specialized modular prosthesis used to fill a bone deficiency following removal of femoral shaft metastases.MethodsEighteen patients with femoral shaft metastases who underwent en bloc resection and implantation of a personalized modular prosthesis between December 2014 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Pain, limb function, and quality of life were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS), Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scale, International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) scoring system, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scale, and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) scale. The Kaplan–Meier technique was used to analyze patient survival.ResultsThe operation duration was 90–150 min (mean, 115 min), and the osteotomy length was 9–16 cm (mean, 11.72 cm). The patients were followed for 12–62 months (mean, 25.28 months). The VAS and NHP ratings were lower at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery than before surgery, while the MSTS, ISOLS, and KPS scores were higher after surgery than they had been before. These differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The survival period was between 7 and 62 months (mean, 20.89 months), and the rates of survival at 1-year and 2-year were 72.22% and 27.78%, respectively. Except for two patients with aseptic prosthesis loosening during the follow-up period, there were no problems.ConclusionEn bloc excision and implantation of a personalized modular prosthesis can reduce pain and improve the ability of patients with femoral shaft metastases to perform daily activities, thereby improving their quality of life.

Abstract
Limb salvage treatment for malignant bone tumors in children includes prosthetic and biological reconstruction. Early function following prosthesis reconstruction is satisfactory; however, there are several complications. Biological reconstruction is another way to treat bone defects. We evaluated the effectiveness of reconstruction of bone defects by liquid nitrogen inactivation of autologous bone with preserving epiphysis in 5 cases of periarticular osteosarcoma of the knee. We retrospectively selected 5 patients with articular osteosarcoma of the knee who underwent epiphyseal-preserving biological reconstruction in our department between January 2019 and January 2020. Femur involvement occurred in 2 cases and tibia involvement occurred in 3 cases, with an average defect of 18 cm (12-30 cm). The 2 patients with femur involvement were treated with inactivated autologous bone by liquid nitrogen with vascularized fibula transplantation. Among the patients with tibia involvement, 2 were treated with inactivated autologous bone with ipsilateral vascularized fibula transplantation and 1 was treated with autologous inactivated bone with contralateral vascularized fibula transplantation. Bone healing was evaluated by regular X-ray examination. At the end of the follow-up, lower limb length, knee flexion, and extension function were evaluated. Patients were followed up for 24 to 36 months. Average bone-healing time was 5.2 months (3-8 months). All patients achieved bone healing with no tumor recurrence and no distant metastasis and all patients survived. The lengths of both lower limbs were equal in 2 cases, with shortening by ≤1 cm in 1 case and shortening by 2 cm in 1 case. Knee flexion was >90° in 4 cases and between 50 and 60° in 1 case. The Muscle and Skeletal Tumor Society score was 24.2 (range 20-26). Inactivation of autogenous bone with the epiphysis preserved by liquid nitrogen combined with vascularized fibula reconstruction for periarticular osteosarcoma of the knee in children is safe and effective. This technique supports bone healing. Postoperative limb length and function, and short-term effects were satisfactory.

Abstract
Bone tumors, including primary bone tumors, invasive bone tumors, metastatic bone tumors, and others, are one of the most clinical difficulties in orthopedics. Once these tumors have grown and developed in the bone system, they will interact with osteocytes and other environmental cells in the bone system's microenvironment, leading to the eventual damage of the bone's physical structure. Surgical procedures for bone tumors may result in permanent defects. The dual-efficacy of tissue regeneration and tumor treatment has made biomaterial scaffolds frequently used in treating bone tumors. 3D printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing or rapid printing prototype, is the transformation of 3D computer models into physical models through deposition, curing, and material fusion of successive layers. Adjustable shape, porosity/pore size, and other mechanical properties are an advantage of 3D-printed objects, unlike natural and synthetic material with fixed qualities. Researchers have demonstrated the significant role of diverse 3D-printed biological scaffolds in the treatment for bone tumors and the regeneration of bone tissue, and that they enhanced various performance of the products. Based on the characteristics of bone tumors, this review synthesized the findings of current researchers on the application of various 3D-printed biological scaffolds including bioceramic scaffold, metal alloy scaffold and nano-scaffold, in bone tumors and discussed the advantages, disadvantages, and future application prospects of various types of 3D-printed biological scaffolds. Finally, the future development trend of 3D-printed biological scaffolds in bone tumor is summarized, providing a theoretical foundation and a larger outlook for the use of biological scaffolds in the treatment of patients with bone tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Under most circumstances, the resection of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities can be limb-sparing, function-preserving oncologic resections with adequate margins. However, en bloc resection may require resection of the major peripheral nerves, causing poor function in the extremities. Although liquid nitrogen treatment has been used to sterilize malignant bone tumors, its use in the preparation of nerve grafts has, to our knowledge, not been reported. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the tumor recurrence and function after peripheral nerve reconstruction using liquid nitrogen-treated tumor-bearing nerves in a rat model. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES (1) Do liquid nitrogen-treated frozen autografts have regeneration capabilities? (2) Do liquid nitrogen-treated tumor-bearing nerves cause any local recurrences in vivo in a rat model? METHODS Experiment 1: Twelve-week-old female Wistar rats, each weighing 250 g to 300 g, were used. A 10-mm-long section of the right sciatic nerve was excised; the prepared nerve grafts were bridge-grafted through end-to-end suturing. The rats were grouped as follows: an autograft group, which underwent placement of a resected sciatic nerve after it was sutured in the reverse orientation, and a frozen autograft group, which underwent bridging of the nerve gap using a frozen autograft. The autograft was frozen in liquid nitrogen, thawed at room temperature, and then thawed in distilled water before application. The third group was a resection group in which the nerve gap was not reconstructed. Twenty-four rats were included in each group, and six rats per group were evaluated at 4, 12, 24, and 48 weeks postoperatively. To assess nerve regeneration after reconstruction using the frozen nerve graft in the nontumor rat model, we evaluated the sciatic functional index, tibialis anterior muscle wet weight ratio, electrophysiologic parameters (amplitude and latency), muscle fiber size (determined with Masson trichrome staining), lower limb muscle volume, and immunohistochemical findings (though neurofilament staining and S100 protein produced solely and uniformly by Schwann cells associated with axons). Lower limb muscle volume was calculated via CT before surgery (0 weeks) and at 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, and 48 weeks after surgery. Experiment 2: Ten-week-old female nude rats (F344/NJcl-rnu/rnu rats), each weighing 100 g to 150 g, were injected with HT1080 (human fibrosarcoma) cells near the bilateral sciatic nerves. Two weeks after injection, the tumor grew to a 10-mm-diameter mass involving the sciatic nerves. Subsequently, the tumor was resected with the sciatic nerves, and tumor-bearing sciatic nerves were obtained. After liquid nitrogen treatment, the frozen tumor-bearing nerve graft was trimmed to a 5-mm-long tissue and implanted into another F344/NJcl-rnu/rnu rat, in which a 5-mm-long section of the sciatic nerve was resected to create a nerve gap. Experiment 2 was performed with 12 rats; six rats were evaluated at 24 and 48 weeks postoperatively. To assess nerve regeneration and tumor recurrence after nerve reconstruction using frozen tumor-bearing nerve grafts obtained from the nude rat with human fibrosarcoma involving the sciatic nerve, the sciatic nerve's function and histologic findings were evaluated in the same way as in Experiment 1. RESULTS Experiment 1: The lower limb muscle volume decreased once at 4 weeks in the autograft and frozen autograft groups and gradually increased thereafter. The tibialis anterior muscle wet weight ratio, sciatic functional index, muscle fiber size, and electrophysiologic evaluation showed higher nerve regeneration potential in the autograft and frozen autograft groups than in the resection group. The median S100-positive areas (interquartile range [IQR]) in the autograft group were larger than those in the frozen autograft group at 12 weeks (0.83 [IQR 0.78 to 0.88] versus 0.57 [IQR 0.53 to 0.61], difference of medians 0.26; p = 0.04) and at 48 weeks (0.86 [IQR 0.83 to 0.99] versus 0.74 [IQR 0.69 to 0.81], difference of median 0.12; p = 0.03). Experiment 2: Lower limb muscle volume decreased at 4 weeks and gradually increased thereafter. The median muscle fiber size increased from 0.89 (IQR 0.75 to 0.90) at 24 weeks to 1.20 (IQR 1.08 to 1.34) at 48 weeks (difference of median 0.31; p< 0.01). The median amplitude increased from 0.60 (IQR 0.56 to 0.67) at 24 weeks to 0.81 (IQR 0.76 to 0.90) at 48 weeks (difference of median 0.21; p < 0.01). Despite tumor involvement and freezing treatment, tumor-bearing frozen grafts demonstrated nerve regeneration activity, with no local recurrence observed at 48 weeks postoperatively in nude rats. CONCLUSION Tumor-bearing frozen nerve grafts demonstrated nerve regeneration activity, and there was no tumor recurrence in rats in vivo. CLINICAL RELEVANCE A frozen nerve autograft has a similar regenerative potential to that of a nerve autograft. Although the findings in a rat model do not guarantee efficacy in humans, if they are substantiated by large-animal models, clinical trials will be needed to evaluate the efficacy of tumor-bearing frozen nerve grafts in humans.

Abstract
BackgroundShort metaphyseal segments that remain following extensive distal femoral tumor resection can be challenging to manage, as the residual short segments may not be sufficient to accept an intramedullary cemented stem of standard length. The present study was developed to detail preliminary findings and experiences associated with an intra-neck curved stem (INCS) reconstructive approach, with a particular focus on mechanical stability.MethodFrom March 2013 to August 2016, 11 total patients underwent reconstructive procedures using a customized cemented femoral endoprosthesis (CCFE) with an INCS. Measurements of femoral neck-shaft angle values were made before and after this procedure. Radiological outcomes associated with this treatment strategy over an average 63-month follow-up period were additionally assessed. Functionality was assessed based upon Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scores, while a visual analog scale (VAS) was used to rate pre- and postoperative pain, and any complications were noted.ResultsRelative to the preoperative design, no significant differences in femoral neck–shaft angle were observed after this reconstructive procedure (p = 0.410). Postoperatively, the tip of the stem was primarily positioned within the middle third of the femoral head in both lateral and posterior-anterior radiographic, supporting the accuracy of INCS positioning. The average MSTS score for these patients was 25 (range: 21–28), and VAS scores were significantly reduced after surgery (p < 0.0001). One patient exhibited local disease recurrence and ultimately succumbed to lung metastases, while two patients exhibited aseptic loosening. None of the treated patients exhibited complications such as infections, periprosthetic fractures, or prosthetic fractures as of most recent follow-up.ConclusionCCFE with an INCS represents a viable approach to massive femoral diaphyseal defect with short proximal femur repair, as patients can achieve good functional outcomes and early weight-bearing with proper individualized rehabilitative interventions, all while exhibiting low rates of procedure-related complications.

Abstract
Tumor recurrence and bacterial infection are common problems during bone repair and reconstruction after bone tumor surgery. In this study, silver-anchored MoS2 nanosheets (Ag@PMoS2) were synthesized by in situ reduction, then a composite polymer scaffold (Ag@PMoS2/PGA) with sustained antitumor and antibacterial activity was successfully constructed by selective laser sintering technique. In the Ag@PMoS2 nanostructures, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were sandwiched between adjacent MoS2 nanosheets (MoS2 NSs), which restrained the restacking of the MoS2 NSs. In addition, the MoS2 NSs acted as steric hindrance layers, which prevented the aggregation of Ag NPs. More importantly, MoS2 NSs can provide a barrier layer for Ag NPs, hindering Ag NPs from reacting with the external solution to prevent its quick release. The results showed that Ag@PMoS2/PGA scaffolds have stronger photothermal effect and antitumor function. Meanwhile, the Ag@PMoS2/PGA scaffolds also demonstrated slow control of silver ion (Ag+) release and more efficient long-term antibacterial ability. Besides, composite scaffolds have been proved to kill the MG-63 cells by inducing apoptosis and inhibit bacterial proliferation by upregulating the level of bacterial reactive oxygen species. This kind of novel bifunctional implants with antitumor and antibacterial properties provides better choice for the artificial bone transplantation after primary bone tumor resection.

Abstract
BackgroundPatients who undergo massive femoral malignant tumor (MFMT) resection often exhibit shortened femoral metaphyseal juxta-articular segments. The use of a customized femoral endoprosthesis (CFE) with an intra-neck curved stem (INCS) has emerged as a viable reconstructive surgical strategy for these individuals. Relative to a cemented INCS, it remains unclear as to whether cementless INCS use is associated with improvements in functionality or reconstructive longevity. As such, the present study was conducted to compare functional outcomes, endoprosthetic survival, and endoprosthesis-related complication rates in patients undergoing cemented and cementless INCS implantation.MethodsA total of 24 patients undergoing lower limb salvage and reconstructive surgical procedures utilizing cemented or cementless INCS endoprostheses were retrospectively included. Patient-functional outcomes, endoprosthetic survival, and complication rates were compared as a function of age; diagnosis; the length of femoral resection; residual proximal femur length; Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scores; visual analog scale (VAS) scores; and the rates of implant breakage, periprosthetic infections, periprosthetic fractures, and aseptic loosening.ResultsThe mean follow-up was 56 months. Significant differences in the length of femoral resection (p<0.001) and residual proximal femur length were observed (p<0.001) between the cemented and cementless INCS groups. There were no differences in overall patient survival and aseptic loosening-associated endoprosthesis survival in the cemented and cementless groups. None of the included patients experienced periprosthetic fractures, infections, or implant breakage. Average respective MSTS and VAS scores did not differ between groups.ConclusionFor patients undergoing treatment for MFMTs, the use of a CFE with an INCS has emerged as a viable approach to hip-preserving reconstructive surgery. With appropriately designed individualized rehabilitative programs, good functional outcomes can be achieved for these endoprostheses, which are associated with low complication rates. Moreover, the selection between cemented or cementless INCS in the clinic should be made based on patient-specific factors, with cementless INCS implementation being preferable in younger patients with good-quality bone, the potential for long-term survival, and the osteotomy site near the lesser trochanter, whereas cemented INCS use should be favored for individuals who are older, have a shorter life expectancy, or have poor bone quality.

Risk factors and outcomes for failure of biological reconstruction after resection of primary malignant bone tumors in the extremities. Sci Rep 2021; 11:20444. Abstract
Biological reconstruction is widely used to reconstruct bone defects after resection of bone tumors in the extremities. This study aimed to identify risk factors for failure and to compare outcomes of the allograft, nonvascularized autograft, and recycled frozen autograft reconstruction after resection of primary malignant bone tumors in the extremities. A retrospective study was performed at a single center between January 1994 and December 2017. Ninety patients with primary malignant bone tumors of the extremities were treated with tumor resection and reconstruction using one of three bone graft methods: nonvascularized autograft (n = 27), allograft (n = 34), and recycled frozen autograft (n = 29). The median time for follow-up was 59.2 months (range 24-240.6 months). Overall failure of biological reconstruction occurred in 53 of 90 patients (58.9%). The allograft group had the highest complication rates (n = 21, 61.8%), followed by the recycled frozen autograft (n = 17, 58.6%) and nonvascularized autograft (n = 15, 55. 6%) groups. There was no statistically significant difference among these three groups (p = 0.89). The mean MSTS score was 22.6 ± 3.4 in the nonvascularized autograft group, 23.4 ± 2.6 in the allograft group, and 24.1 ± 3.3 in the recycled frozen autograft group. There was no significant difference among the groups (p = 0.24). After bivariate and multivariable analyses, patient age, sex, tumor location, graft length, methods, and type of reconstruction had no effects on the failure of biological reconstruction. Biological reconstruction using allograft, nonvascularized autograft, and recycled frozen autograft provide favorable functional outcomes despite high complication rates. This comparative study found no significant difference in functional outcomes or complication rates among the different types of reconstruction.

Abstract
Reconstructions for paediatric bone tumours of the shoulder girdle and humerus are intended to optimize placement of the hand in space. Given the longevity of paediatric survivors of sarcoma, durability is an important planning consideration. Here, I review a subset of approaches based on anatomical site with an emphasis on function and longevity. Often, biological reconstructions that combine living bone with tendon repairs and transfers best address those goals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare and analyze the therapeutic effects of X-ray devitalization and replantation and alcoholic devitalization and replantation in adolescent patients with lower limb osteosarcoma. METHODS We collected clinical data for 43 osteosarcoma patients with limb salvage treatment treated in our hospital from February 2014 to February 2018. The patients were divided into x-ray devitalization and replantation group (n=23) and alcoholic devitalization and replantation group (n=20) based on the treatment methods. The two groups were compared in operation duration, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative fracture healing time, length of tumor bones, MSTS score and ISOLS score, postoperative complications, postoperative follow-ups and postoperative recurrence and metastases. RESULTS Operation duration and intraoperative blood loss of the alcoholic group were less than that of the X-ray group, while postoperative fracture healing time of the alcoholic group was longer than that of the X-ray group (P<0.05). For the X-ray group, MSTS score and ISOLO score of the final follow-up were 26.13±2.65 and 32.53±3.73 respectively. For the alcoholic group, MSTS score and ISOLO score of the final follow-up were 23.69±3.27 and 30.98±3.56 respectively. MSTS score of the X-ray group was higher than that of the alcoholic group (P<0.05). There were 2 cases of internal fixation failure and 2 cases of adhesive knee joints stiffness in the X-ray group. As for the alcoholic group, there were 2 cases of internal fixation failure and 2 cases of incision soft tissue infection. There were no statistically significant differences in postoperative complications, recurrence, and metastases between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION Both methods are convenient, inexpensive, and effective for adolescent patients with lower limb osteosarcoma. Alcoholic devitalization and replantation results in shorter operation duration and less intraoperative blood loss, while X-ray devitalization and replantation results in better postoperative limb function restoration.

En bloc resection and intercalary prosthesis implantation for the treatment of humeral diaphyseal bone metastases. INTERNATIONAL ORTHOPAEDICS 2020; 45:281-288. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the short-term clinical efficacy and complications of en bloc resection and intercalary prosthesis implantation for the treatment of humeral diaphyseal bone metastases. METHODS A total of 21 patients with humeral diaphyseal bone metastases treated with en bloc resection and intercalary prosthesis implantation from August 2014 to August 2019 were retrospectively analysed. The visual analogue scale (VAS), Musculoskeletal Tumour Society (MSTS) scale, International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) scoring system, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scale, and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) scale were used to assess pain, limb function, and quality of life. Survival of the patients was analysed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS The patients were followed up for 12-57 months (mean: 22 months); the operative time was 68-114 minutes (mean: 76.24 min); the osteotomy length was 6.5-10 cm (mean: 8.02 cm); and the intra-operative blood loss was 95-125 ml (mean: 104.71 ml). At three, six and 12 months after surgery, the VAS and NHP scores were lower, whereas the MSTS, ISOLS, and KPS scores were higher than those before surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The survival time was four to 24 months (mean: 19.46 months). Thesix month and one year survival rates were 80.95% and 52.38%, respectively. During the follow-up period, no complications occurred except for aseptic prosthesis loosening in one patient. CONCLUSIONS En bloc resection and intercalary prosthesis implantation can reduce pain, improve limb function, prolong survival time, and improve quality of life in patients with humeral diaphyseal bone metastases.
