Strategies to Improve Influenza Vaccination in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Through Education and Access

Impact of an Intervention to Promote the Vaccination of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a dysregulated immune system, being at high risk of opportunistic infections. Low vaccination rates hinder the prevention of such diseases. Therefore, we implemented an intervention to increase vaccination rates, and we aimed to evaluate the effect. We determined the change in professionals and the change in the vaccination rates after the intervention. A quasi-experimental study was carried out using data from 31 December 2016 to 31 December 2021. First, healthcare professionals specializing in IBD agreed on a vaccination protocol; then, this protocol was passed on to the professionals involved in vaccination. We evaluated the perception of knowledge, capacity, and intention to vaccinate patients with IBD among the professionals before and after the intervention with a survey. We also described the effectiveness of the intervention for already diagnosed patients and compared the vaccination rates between patients diagnosed prior to the intervention and newly diagnosed patients. The intervention resulted in an improved perception of knowledge, capacity, and intention to vaccinate patients with IBD among the professionals (p < 0.05). Moreover, during the post-intervention period, in the 315 patients, the vaccination rate increased for all immune-preventable diseases (p < 0.05). The professionals positively valued the intervention, and compliance with the recommended vaccination protocol in patients with IBD improved significantly.

Vaccination coverage in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and healthy peers: Cross-sectional electronic survey data

BACKGROUND

Patients with immune-mediated diseases, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of developing infections, due to disease-related immune dysfunction and applying of immunosuppressive drugs.

AIM

To evaluate vaccine coverage in patients with IBD and JIA, and compare it with healthy children.

METHODS

In the cross-sectional study we included the data from a questionnaire survey of 190 Legal representatives of children with JIA (n = 81), IBD (n = 51), and healthy children (HC, n = 58). An electronic online questionnaire was created for the survey.

RESULTS

There were female predominance in JIA patients and younger onset age. Parents of JIA had higher education levels. Employment level and family status were similar in the three studied groups. Patients with JIA and IBD had lower vaccine coverage, without parental rejection of vaccinations in IBD, compare to JIA and healthy controls. The main reason for incomplete vaccination was medical conditions in IBD and JIA. IBD patients had a lower rate of normal vaccine-associated reactions compared to JIA and HC. The encouraging role of physicians for vaccinations was the lowest in JIA patients. IBD patients had more possibilities to check antibodies before immune-suppressive therapy and had more supplementary vaccinations compared to JIA and HC.

CONCLUSION

JIA and IBD patients had lower vaccine coverage compared to HC. Physicians' encouragement of vaccination and the impossibility of discus about future vaccinations and their outcomes seemed the main factors for patients with immune-mediated diseases, influencing vaccine coverage. Further investigations are required to understand the reasons for incomplete vaccinations and improve vaccine coverage in both groups, especially in rheumatic disease patients. The approaches that stimulate vaccination in healthy children are not always optimal in children with immune-mediated diseases. It is necessary to provide personalized vaccine-encouraging strategies for parents of chronically ill children with the following validation of these technics.

Prevalence of pain and fear as barriers to vaccination in children - Systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Injection-related pain and fear are common adverse reactions in children undergoing vaccination and influence vaccine acceptance. Despite the large body of literature on sources of vaccine non-compliance, there is no estimate of the prevalence of pain and fear as contributing factors. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of injection pain or fear of needles as barriers to childhood (i.e., 0-18 years) vaccination.

METHODS

Four databases were searched from inception for relevant English and French articles until August 2021. In addition, the references of recent systematic reviews and all articles included in the review were hand searched. Article screening and data extractions were performed in duplicate. Studies were included if they reported on injection-related pain or fear of needles in children (0-18 years) using a checklist/closed-ended question(s). Results were stratified by respondent (parents or children), type of pediatric population (general or under-vaccinated), and relative importance of barrier (pain or needle fear as primary reason or any reason for under-vaccination). Prevalence rates of pain or needle fear were combined using a random effects model. Quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist for prevalence data. Quality across studies was assessed using GRADE.

RESULTS

There were 26 studies with 45 prevalence estimates published between 1995 and 2021. For parent reports (of children) and children self-reported reasons for non-compliance, prevalence rates of pain or needle fear ranged from 5 to 13% in a general population and 8 to 28% in an under-vaccinated population, with a substantial variation in the prevalence estimates. There was no difference between category of respondent or relative importance on pain or needle fear prevalence rate. A regression model demonstrated an overall prevalence rate of pain or needle fear as an obstacle to vaccination of 8% in the general population and 18.3% in the under-vaccinated population. All evidence was very low in quality.

CONCLUSION

This is the first review to systematically quantify the prevalence and therefore, importance, of pain and needle fear as obstacles to vaccination in children around the world. Pain from injection or fear of needles were demonstrated to be sufficiently prevalent as barriers to vaccination in children to warrant attention. Addressing pain and fear has the potential to significantly improve vaccination acceptance.

Suboptimal Vaccination Administration in Mothers With Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Their Biologic-Exposed Infants

BACKGROUND

Pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of developing complications from vaccine-preventable infections. We investigated the factors influencing vaccine administration in pregnant women with IBD and their infants, in addition to the safety of vaccination in the infants.

METHODS

This retrospective cohort study identified individuals from a tertiary referral clinic whose records were linked to a provincial vaccine database. We conducted χ 2 tests, Fisher exact tests, and logistic regression adjusting for age and disease duration to compare vaccine administration by medication class. Potential rotavirus vaccine adverse events were determined in infants of women with IBD.

RESULTS

We included 303 pregnant women and 262 infants. Vaccines were administered to women on biologic therapy as follows: hepatitis B virus (82.9%), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (82.1%), and hepatitis A virus (49.3%). The influenza vaccination was provided peripartum in 50.7% of patients. The measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine was provided to 89.3% of women before biologic initiation. Women treated with a biologic (adjusted odds ratio, 2.50; 95% confidence interval, 1.39-4.35) or immunomodulator (adjusted odds ratio, 4.00; 95% confidence interval, 2.22-7.69) were more likely to receive the Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23 vaccines than were unexposed individuals, but the overall proportion vaccinated was low (Prevnar 13, 35.7%; Pneumovax 23, 39.3%). At least 90% of infants received the measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine and inactivated vaccines. Fourteen biologic-exposed children (19.2%) received the live rotavirus vaccine with no significant differences in adverse events compared with biologic-unexposed infants (7.1% vs 8.2%, P = 0.99).

CONCLUSIONS

Better education surrounding vaccine recommendations is required for both health care providers and individuals with IBD given poor pneumococcal, hepatitis A virus, and influenza vaccination rates. Inadvertent administration of the rotavirus vaccine in biologic-exposed infants did not result in more adverse events, raising the possibility of safety.

These recommendations, developed by the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and endorsed by the American Gastroenterological Association, aim to provide guidance on immunizations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This publication focused on live vaccines.

Methods

Systematic reviews evaluating the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of vaccines in patients with IBD, other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, and the general population were performed. Critical outcomes included mortality, vaccine-preventable diseases, and serious adverse events. Immunogenicity was considered a surrogate outcome for vaccine efficacy. Certainty of evidence and strength of recommendations were rated according to the GRADE (Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach. Key questions were developed through an iterative process and voted on by a multidisciplinary panel. Recommendations were formulated using the Evidence-to-Decision framework. Strong recommendation means that most patients should receive the recommended course of action, whereas a conditional recommendation means that different choices will be appropriate for different patients.

Three good practice statements included reviewing a patient’s vaccination status at diagnosis and at regular intervals, giving appropriate vaccinations as soon as possible, and not delaying urgently needed immunosuppressive therapy to provide vaccinations. There are 4 recommendations on the use of live vaccines. Measles, mumps, rubella vaccine is recommended for both adult and pediatric patients with IBD not on immunosuppressive therapy, but not for those using immunosuppressive medications (conditional). Varicella vaccine is recommended for pediatric patients with IBD not on immunosuppressive therapy, but not for those using immunosuppressive medications (conditional). For adults, recommendations are conditionally in favor of varicella vaccine for those not on immunosuppressive therapy, and against for those on therapy. No recommendation was made regarding the use of live vaccines in infants born to mothers using biologics because the desirable and undesirable effects were closely balanced and the evidence was insufficient.

Conclusions

Maintaining appropriate vaccination status in patients with IBD is critical to optimize patient outcomes. In general, live vaccines are recommended in patients not on immunosuppressive therapy, but not for those using immunosuppressive medications. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of live vaccines in patients on immunosuppressive therapy.

Vaccines in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Brief Review

Incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is increasing worldwide. Children with IBDs have a dysfunctional immune system and they are frequently treated with immunomodulating drugs and biological therapy, which significantly impair immune system functions and lead to an increased risk of infections. Vaccines are essential to prevent at least part of these infections and this explains why strict compliance to the immunization guidelines specifically prepared for IBD patients is strongly recommended. However, several factors might lead to insufficient immunization. In this paper, present knowledge on the use of vaccines in children with IBDs is discussed. Literature review showed that despite a lack of detailed quantification of the risk of infections in children with IBDs, these children might have infections more frequently than age-matched healthy subjects, and at least in some cases, these infections might be even more severe. Fortunately, most of these infections could be prevented when recommended schedules of immunization are carefully followed. Vaccines given to children with IBDs generally have adequate immunogenicity and safety. Attention must be paid to live attenuated vaccines that can be administered only to children without or with mild immune system function impairment. Vaccination of their caregivers is also recommended. Unfortunately, compliance to these recommendations is generally low and multidisciplinary educational programs to improve vaccination coverage must be planned, in order to protect children with IBD from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Improving Influenza Vaccination in Children With Comorbidities: A Systematic Review

CONTEXT

Children with medical comorbidities are at greater risk for severe influenza and poorer clinical outcomes. Despite recommendations and funding, influenza vaccine coverage remains inadequate in these children.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to systematically review literature assessing interventions targeting influenza vaccine coverage in children with comorbidities and assess the impact on influenza vaccine coverage.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, and Web of Science databases were searched.

STUDY SELECTION

Interventions targeting influenza vaccine coverage in children with medical comorbidities.

DATA EXTRACTION

Two reviewers independently screened articles, extracting studies' methods, interventions, settings, populations, and results. Four reviewers independently assessed risk of bias.

RESULTS

From 961 screened articles, 35 met inclusion criteria. Published studies revealed that influenza vaccine coverage was significantly improved through vaccination reminders and education directed at either patients' parents or providers, as well as by vaccination-related clinic process changes. Interventions improved influenza vaccine coverage by an average 60%, but no significant differences between intervention types were detected. Significant bias and study heterogeneity were also identified, limiting confidence in this effect estimate.

LIMITATIONS

A high risk of bias and overall low quality of evidence limited our capacity to assess intervention types and methods.

CONCLUSIONS

Interventions were shown to consistently improve influenza vaccine coverage; however, no significant differences in coverage between different intervention types were observed. Future well-designed studies evaluating the effectiveness of different intervention are required to inform future optimal interventions.

Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on Influenza Vaccine Uptake: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Background

This study aimed to explore effective education method to improve influenza vaccine uptake rate.

Methods

Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials was conducted in this study including subgroup analysis and publication bias test. Electronic databases comprised PubMed, EBSCO, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and Cochrane were searched for studies published up to Oct 8, 2019.

Results

Influenza vaccination was significantly different in massages or letters intervention group (OR=1.30, 95%CI: 1.05-1.61). No heterogeneity and publication bias existed in this meta-analysis (I² =43.60%, P=0.131, P_begg =0.754, P_egger =0.051).

Conclusion

Education by messages and letters was effective according to this study. Education messages could be more efficacy combined with easer vaccine access.

Vaccinations and Immunization Status in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Multicenter Study From the Pediatric IBD Porto Group of the ESPGHAN

BACKGROUND

Vaccine-preventable diseases and opportunistic infections in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are increasingly recognized issues. The aims of this study were to evaluate vaccinations, immunization status, and consequent therapeutic management in children with IBD and to analyze the differences among patients diagnosed before (Group 1) and after June 2012 (Group 2).

METHODS

This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort investigation. Between July 2016 and July 2017, 430 children with IBD were enrolled in 13 centers. Diagnosis, therapeutic history, vaccinations, and immunization status screening at diagnosis and at immunosuppressant (IM)/biologic initiation and reasons for incomplete immunization were retrieved.

RESULTS

Vaccination rates at diagnosis were unsatisfactory for measles, mumps, and rubella (89.3%), Haemophilus influenzae (81.9%), meningococcus C (23.5%), chickenpox (18.4%), pneumococcus (18.6%), papillomavirus (5.9%), and rotavirus (1.9%). Complete immunization was recorded in 38/430 (8.8%) children, but specific vaccines were recommended in 79/430 patients (18.6%), without differences between the 2 groups. At IM start, 22% of children were tested for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status, with 96.2% of EBV-naïve patients starting azathioprine, without differences between Groups 1 and 2. Screening for latent tuberculosis (TB) before start of biologics was performed in 175/190 (92.1%), with up to 9 different screening strategies and numerous inconsistencies.

CONCLUSIONS

We demonstrated a poor immunization status at diagnosis in children with IBD, which was not followed by proper vaccination catch-up. EBV status before IM initiation and latent TB before biologics were not adequately assessed. Thus, the overall impact of the current guidelines seems unsatisfactory.

Vaccination Rates and Family Barriers Among Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

BACKGROUND

Many children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are taking immunosuppressant medications that place them at risk for vaccine preventable diseases. Despite national guidelines, children with IBD have low vaccination rates. Adult data suggest that there is concern about the safety of vaccines. There are no current studies addressing perceived safety about vaccinations among families of children with IBD.

METHODS

A total of 108 caregivers of children (ages 10-25 years) were surveyed during their outpatient visit, with approximately half having a diagnosis of IBD. The survey consisted of validated questions regarding vaccine safety and opinions. After enrollment, state-wide vaccine registry data was collected. Demographics between the two groups were compared using Ch-square and the Wilcoxon rank-sum tests to analyze Likert scale questions.

RESULTS

The majority of children followed for IBD were Caucasian males, had Crohn's disease (68%) and were immunosuppressed. Results from the survey revealed a concern about vaccine safety (40% vs. 16%, p=0.03) and overall effectiveness (34% vs. 12%, p<0.01) in the IBD group compared to the non-IBD. Furthermore, more IBD families were worried that vaccines would worsen their child's symptoms (36% vs. 10%, p=<0.01). The majority of children were missing the flu and/or HPV vaccine. Finally, 96% of the children on a biologic for their IBD were missing the PPSV23 booster.

CONCLUSIONS

Caregivers of children with IBD are more concerned about vaccine safety and effectiveness than those with non-IBD diagnosis. Despite being on immunosuppressant medications, many patients were missing recommended vaccines.

Utilizing Information Technology to Improve Influenza Vaccination in Pediatric Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease are undervaccinated against influenza. Gastroenterology nurses are ideally situated to assist in improving vaccination in this population. The objective of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the implementation of information technology prompts within the electronic medical record to improve influenza vaccination during specialty clinic visits. The proportion of patients with yearly influenza vaccination was evaluated at baseline, Year 1, and Year 2 following implementation. At baseline, only 10% of a random sample had documented influenza vaccination. Vaccination documentation improved to 39% (96/246) by Year 1 and to 61% (175/287) by Year 2 (p < .001). Vaccine counseling improved from 27% to 77% by Year 2 for unvaccinated patients (p < .001). Among patients seen by gastroenterology nurses, the proportion of patients with either documented vaccination or counseling was 94% by Year 2 compared with 70% if seen only by a physician (p < .001). Documentation of influenza vaccination improved with the use of customized prompts. Patients seen by a gastroenterology nurse had higher vaccination documentation and vaccine counseling than those who were seen by a physician alone.

Anticipatory care of children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease: a primer for primary care providers

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

About 10-20% of patients with newly diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are under 18 years of age, with incidence increasing in young children. Children with IBD have unique healthcare needs, which require coordination between primary care providers and pediatric gastroenterologists to provide appropriate care. This review highlights some key elements of anticipatory care in pediatric IBD, including vaccination, risk of serious infection and malignancy, psychosocial and educational needs, and cannabis use.

RECENT FINDINGS

Therapies for IBD that include anti-tumor necrosis factor medications, especially when combined with corticosteroids are associated with higher risks of serious infections. Vaccination remains the best way to prevent infections. Live vaccinations should be avoided during immunosuppression, but the schedule should be otherwise completed, including vaccination for influenza, pneumococcus and meningococcus, and human papillomavirus. Malignancy risk is increased in IBD patients, both because of disease factors and resulting from immunomodulatory medications. Children with IBD are at risk for mental health disorders and negative educational outcomes, so identification of at-risk children and early intervention are important.

SUMMARY

High-quality care in pediatric IBD requires coordination between pediatric gastroenterologists and primary care providers, with careful attention paid to the specific needs of children with IBD.

Web-based analysis of adherence to influenza vaccination among French healthcare workers

BACKGROUND

Influenza is recognized as a public health threat. However, vaccine hesitancy and poor vaccine uptake have been seen in French healthcare workers (HCWs). As a result, authorities have considered implementing mandatory influenza vaccination for HCWs.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to describe factors associated with influenza vaccine adherence or non-adherence in French HCWs and to collect their perception about mandatory influenza vaccination.

STUDY DESIGN

In February 2017, during the influenza season, a standardized questionnaire was sent electronically to the professional email addresses of French HCWs. Analyses were performed having collected 3000 responses.

RESULTS

Between February 1 and 16, 2017, a 14-question survey was sent to HCWs professional email addresses. After a two week period had elaspsed, 3000 answers were collected for analysis. Overall, 45.7% of responders reported they had received influenza vaccination in 2016-2017, with statistical differences relating to professional status, age and practice. In addition, 92.2% reported caring for at-risk patients and 62.9% had a community-based practice. Finally, accepting mandatory influenza vaccination was statistically associated with higher age, a higher socio-professional category, and seasonal influenza vaccine uptake, but not with management of at-risk patients.

CONCLUSIONS

Electronically submitted questionnaires are a rapid and easy tool that can be used to describe factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake in HCWs. In our study, differences in receiving influenza vaccination related to age, practice and professional categories, and provided an insight into potential adherence to mandatory influenza vaccination in HCWs. If repeated, these surveys may also monitor the evolution of vaccine uptake by professional categories.

The Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Canada 2018: Children and Adolescents with IBD

Canada has among the highest rates of childhood-onset IBD in the world. Over 7000 children and youth under 18 years old are living with IBD in Canada, and 600 to 650 children under 16 years old are diagnosed annually. While the peak age of onset of IBD is highest in the second and third decades of life, over the past two decades incidence has risen most rapidly in children under 5 years old. The treatment of children with IBD presents important challenges including therapeutic choices, risk of adverse events to medications, psychosocial impact on the child and family, increased cost of health care and the implications of the transition from pediatric to adult care. Despite the unique circumstances faced by children and their families, there is a lack of research to help understand the causes of the rising incidence and the best therapies for children with IBD. Scientific evidence—and specifically clinical trials of pharmaceuticals—are too often extrapolated from adult research. Health care providers must strive to understand the unique impact of childhood-onset IBD on patients and families, while researchers must expand work to address the important needs of this growing patient population.

BACKGROUND

As an important quality measure, the rates of recommended immunizations among immunocompromised inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in community practice have not been well studied.

AIMS

This study sought to investigate the rates and predictors of recommended immunizations and screening tests among IBD patients receiving anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy in a large integrated healthcare organization.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1401 IBD patients on anti-TNF therapy between 2010 and 2013 within the Kaiser Permanente Northern California healthcare system. The rates of vaccinations and screening tests were quantified, and the associated predictors were investigated.

RESULTS

Vaccination rates for influenza and pneumococcus were 43.5 and 24.1%, respectively. The majority of patients (73.7%) received hepatitis B screening and/or vaccine. Patients receiving infliximab had higher rates of pneumococcal vaccine (P = 0.002), hepatitis B screening (P < 0.001), and tuberculin skin test (P < 0.001) compared with patients receiving adalimumab. Older patient age (≥50 years) was associated with higher likelihood of having HBsAg test (odds ratio [OR] 1.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2-2.0, P = 0.002), influenza vaccine (OR 2.6 [2.1-3.4], P < 0.001), and pneumococcal vaccine (OR 4.0 [3.0-5.3], P < 0.001). In contrast, older providers (≥50 years) were associated with significantly lower likelihood of their patients' having hepatitis A and B screening tests, and pneumococcal vaccination.

CONCLUSIONS

The rates of immunizations for IBD patients receiving anti-TNF treatment were lower than recommended. Structured reminders for vaccinations and education for both patients and providers (older physicians in particular) may prove beneficial in improving immunization rates among immunocompromised IBD patients.

Effects of Education and Information on Vaccination Behavior in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

BACKGROUND

Despite the existence of international guidelines, vaccination in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been integrated optimally. We developed a thorough education program, and compared its influence on vaccination rates with routine clinical practice in a tertiary IBD center.

METHODS

Between December 2014 and March 2015, we included 505 consecutive patients with IBD visiting our outpatient clinic (53% men, 72% Crohn's disease, median age 44 years). Vaccination data, including hepatitis B, influenza, pneumococcus, tetanus, and varicella zoster virus, as well as demographic data, were collected by a fellow in training or a certified gastroenterologist. Thereafter, patients were randomly assigned to group A receiving routine clinical practice or intervention group B receiving additional education by the IBD nurse with help of an information brochure and vaccination card. Vaccination status was reassessed 8 months later.

RESULTS

At baseline, 32% of patients were vaccinated according to the guidelines. The remaining 346 patients were randomized to group A (n = 206) or intervention group B (n = 140). Eight months after randomization, 33% of intervention group B versus 6% of group A followed vaccination recommendations and differences were significant for each vaccine (all P < 0.001). A higher educational level was independently associated with better compliance to pneumococcal vaccination (P = 0.008) and to the guidelines overall (P < 0.001). However, the educational intervention was the only consistent factor independently associated with improved compliance to each individual vaccination recommendation (all P ≤ 0.023).

CONCLUSIONS

Introduction of thorough vaccination education significantly increased compliance to vaccination guidelines. However, further education of patients and health care providers remains necessary.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Skin Cancer: An Assessment of Patient Risk Factors, Knowledge, and Skin Practices

Objective. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk from skin cancer. Aims include assessing IBD patients' risk factors and knowledge of skin cancer and current skin protection practices to identify gaps in patient education regarding skin cancer prevention in IBD. Methods. IBD patients ≥ 18 years were recruited to complete an online survey. Results. 164 patients (mean age 43.5 years, 63% female) with IBD (67% Crohn's disease, 31% ulcerative colitis, and 2% indeterminate colitis) were included. 12% (n = 19) of patients had a personal history and 34% (n = 55) had a family history of skin cancer. Females scored better on skin protection (16.94/32 versus 14.53/32, P ≤ 0.03) and awareness (35.16/40 versus 32.98/40, P ≤ 0.03). Patients over 40 years old scored better on prevention (17.45/28 versus 15.35/28, P = 0.03). Patients with skin cancer scored better on prevention (20.56/28 versus 15.75/28, P ≤ 0.001) and skin protection (21.47/32 versus 15.33/32, P ≤ 0.001). 61% of patients recognized the link between skin cancer and IBD. Conclusions. The majority of IBD patients are aware of the link between skin cancer and IBD; however, skin protection practices are suboptimal. This emphasizes the role of healthcare professionals in providing further education for skin cancer prevention in the IBD population.
