Abstract
The gut microbiome emerges as an integral component of precision medicine because of its signature variability among individuals and its plasticity, which enables personalized therapeutic interventions, especially when integrated with other multiomics data. This promise is further fueled by advances in next-generation sequencing and metabolomics, which allow in-depth high-precision profiling of microbiome communities, their genetic contents, and secreted chemistry. This knowledge has advanced our understanding of our microbial partners, their interaction with cellular targets, and their implication in human conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This explosion of microbiome data inspired the development of next-generation therapeutics for treating IBD that depend on manipulating the gut microbiome by diet modulation or using live products as therapeutics. The current landscape of artificial microbiome therapeutics is not limited to probiotics and fecal transplants but has expanded to include community consortia, engineered probiotics, and defined metabolites, bypassing several limitations that hindered rapid progress in this field such as safety and regulatory issues. More integrated research will reveal new therapeutic targets such as enzymes or receptors mediating interactions between microbiota-secreted molecules that drive or modulate diseases. With the shift toward precision medicine and the enhanced integration of host genetics and polymorphism in treatment regimes, the following key questions emerge: How can we effectively implement microbiomics to further personalize the treatment of diseases like IBD, leveraging proven and validated microbiome links? Can we modulate the microbiome to manage IBD by altering the host immune response? In this review, we discuss recent advances in understanding the mechanism underpinning the role of gut microbes in driving or preventing IBD. We highlight developed targeted approaches to reverse dysbiosis through precision editing of the microbiome. We analyze limitations and opportunities while defining the specific clinical niche for this innovative therapeutic modality for the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of IBD and its potential implication in precision medicine.

Abstract
Though sterile diet, post-transplantation surgery is a clinical strategy for patient care to prevent the infiltration of gut pathogens, less is known about its effects on the gut microbiome. Here, the gut microbiome dynamics of leukemia patients following a 120-day "sterile-normal" diet strategy posthematopoietic cell transplantation are examined. In contrast to the traditional idea, a sterile diet leads to the lowest gut microbiota diversity (p < 0.05) and short-chain fatty acids, promoted the proliferation of potential pathogens such as Streptococcus (up by 16.93%) and Lactobacillus (up by 40.30%), and 43.32% reduction in nodes and an 85.33% reduction in edges within the microbial interaction's network. Interestingly, a normal diet allows the gut microbiome recovery and significantly promotes the abundance of beneficial bacteria. These results indicate that a sterile diet leads to a collapse of the patient's gut microbiome and promoted the proliferation of potential pathogens. This assay is a starting point for a more sophisticated assessment of the effects of a sterile diet. The work also suggests a basic principle for the re-establishment of microbial equilibrium that supplementation of microbial taxa may be the key to the restoration of the degraded ecosystem.

Abstract
The intestinal barrier maintained by various types of columnar epithelial cells, plays a crucial role in regulating the interactions between the intestinal contents (such as the intestinal microbiota), the immune system, and other components. Dysfunction of the intestinal mucosa is a significant pathophysiological mechanism and clinical manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, current therapies for IBD primarily focus on suppressing inflammation, and no disease-modifying treatments specifically target the epithelial barrier. Given the side effects associated with chronic immunotherapy, effective alternative therapies that promote mucosal healing are highly attractive. In this review, we examined the function of intestinal epithelial barrier function and the mechanisms of behind its disruption in IBD. We illustrated the complex process of intestinal mucosal healing and proposed therapeutic approaches to promote mucosal healing strategies in IBD. These included the application of stem cell transplantation and organ-like tissue engineering approaches to generate new intestinal tissue. Finally, we discussed potential strategies to restore the function of the intestinal barrier as a treatment for IBD.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises chronic and relapsing disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by dysregulated immune responses to the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome and diet are key environmental factors that influence the onset and progression of IBD and can be leveraged for treatment. In this review, we summarize the current evidence on the role of the gut microbiome and diet in IBD pathogenesis, and the potential of microbiome-directed therapies and dietary interventions to improve IBD outcomes. We discuss available data and the advantages and drawbacks of the different approaches to manipulate the gut microbiome, such as fecal microbiota transplantation, next-generation and conventional probiotics, and postbiotics. We also review the use of diet as a therapeutic tool in IBD, including the effects in induction and maintenance, special diets, and exclusive enteral nutrition. Finally, we highlight the challenges and opportunities for the translation of diet and microbiome interventions into clinical practice, such as the need for personalization, manufacturing and regulatory hurdles, and the specificity to take into account for clinical trial design.

Abstract
In inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), the immune system relentlessly attacks intestinal cells, causing recurrent tissue damage over the lifetime of patients. The etiology of IBD is complex and multifactorial, involving environmental, microbiota, genetic, and immunological factors that alter the molecular basis of the organism. Among these, the microbiota and immune cells play pivotal roles; the microbiota generates antigens recognized by immune cells and antibodies, while autoantibodies target and attack the intestinal membrane, exacerbating inflammation and tissue damage. Given the altered molecular framework, the analysis of multiple molecular biomarkers in patients proves exceedingly valuable for diagnosing and prognosing IBD, including markers like C reactive protein and fecal calprotectin. Upon detection and classification of patients, specific treatments are administered, ranging from conventional drugs to new biological therapies, such as antibodies to neutralize inflammatory molecules like tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and integrin. This review delves into the molecular basis and targets, biomarkers, treatment options, monitoring techniques, and, ultimately, current challenges in IBD management.

Abstract
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and food additives have become ubiquitous components of the modern human diet. There is increasing evidence of an association between diets rich in UPFs and gut disease, including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and irritable bowel syndrome. Food additives are added to many UPFs and have themselves been shown to affect gut health. For example, evidence shows that some emulsifiers, sweeteners, colours, and microparticles and nanoparticles have effects on a range of outcomes, including the gut microbiome, intestinal permeability and intestinal inflammation. Broadly speaking, evidence for the effect of UPFs on gut disease comes from observational epidemiological studies, whereas, by contrast, evidence for the effect of food additives comes largely from preclinical studies conducted in vitro or in animal models. Fewer studies have investigated the effect of UPFs or food additives on gut health and disease in human intervention studies. Hence, the aim of this article is to critically review the evidence for the effects of UPF and food additives on gut health and disease and to discuss the clinical application of these findings.

Abstract
Diet is an environmental exposure implicated in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Dietary therapy is also a tool for management of these conditions. Nutrition therapy for IBD has been shown to reduce intestinal inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate symptoms, as well as improve patients' nutrition status. Although the mechanisms of action of most nutrition therapies for IBD are not well understood, the diets are theorized to eliminate triggers for gut dysbiosis and mucosal immune dysfunction associated with the typical Western diet. Exclusive enteral nutrition and the Crohn's disease exclusion diet are increasingly being used as the primary treatment modality for the induction of remission and/or maintenance therapy in children, and in some adults, with CD. Several other diets, such as the Mediterranean diet, anti-inflammatory diet for IBD, and diets excluding gluten, FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols), lactose, or other compounds, may be helpful in symptom management in both CD and UC, though evidence for biochemical efficacy is limited. In this review, we discuss the role of diet components in IBD pathogenesis and examine diets currently used in the management of children and adults with IBD. We also address practical, psychosocial, and cultural considerations for dietary therapy across diverse populations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Paleolithic Diet Fraction (PDF) estimates how large a portion of the absolute dietary intake stems from food groups included in the Paleolithic diet. In randomized controlled trials higher PDFs have been associated with healthier levels of cardiometabolic risk markers. Our aim was to build upon these findings by examining associations between PDF and mortality and incidence of cardiometabolic disease in the prospective Malmö Diet and Cancer Study. METHODS PDF was calculated from an interview-based, modified diet history method, and associations were estimated by using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression. The examined cohort consisted of 24,104 individuals (44-74 years, 63% women) without previous coronary events, diabetes, or stroke at baseline (1992-1996). A total of 10,092 individuals died during a median follow-up of 18 years. RESULTS Median PDF was 40% (0-90%). The adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for PDF as a continuous variable (from 0 to 100%) were for risk of death from all causes 0.55 [95% CI 0.45, 0.66], tumor 0.68 [95% CI 0.49, 0.93], cardiovascular 0.55 [95% CI 0.39, 0.78], respiratory 0.44 [95% CI 0.21, 0.90], neurological 0.26 [95% CI 0.11, 0.60], digestive, 0.10 [95% CI 0.03, 0.30], and other diseases 0.64 [95% CI 0.41, 1.00]. The corresponding HR for risk of coronary event was 0.61 [95% 0.43, 0.86], for ischemic stroke it was 0.73 [95% 0.48, 1.09] and for type 2 diabetes it was 0.82 [95% 0.61, 1.10]. CONCLUSION Observational data suggest an inverse association between PDF and all-cause as well as cause-specific mortality and incidence of cardiometabolic disease.

Abstract
Intestinal microbiota plays an indispensable role in the host's innate immune system, which may be related to the occurrence of many autoimmune diseases. Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is one of the most common autoimmune diseases, and there is plenty of evidence indicating that HT may be related to genetics and environmental triggers, but the specific mechanism has not been proven clearly. Significantly, the composition and abundance of intestinal microbiota in patients with HT have an obvious difference. This phenomenon led us to think about whether intestinal microbiota can affect the progress of HT through some mechanisms. By summarizing the potential mechanism of intestinal microflora in regulating Hashimoto thyroiditis, this article explores the possibility of improving HT by regulating intestinal microbiota and summarizes relevant biomarkers as therapeutic targets, which provide new ideas for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic relapsing disorders, including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), which affects an increasing number of people worldwide. In the last few decades, the scientific world has witnessed many developments in IBD management by controlling debilitating symptoms and remaining in remission for more protracted periods. Even so, we still have a large population suffering from active IBD. An individual's quality of life (QoL) can be severely affected by IBD, like any other chronic illness. In this article, we have reviewed factors influencing the QoL in IBD patients, including chronic pain, diet, physical activity, and psychological factors like depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. We also discussed the mechanisms of diet-microbial-immune system interaction, currently available dietary therapies for active CD and UC, and early psycho-social interventions that can reduce the disease burden and improve QoL in IBD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypothyroidism is a very common disease that requires life-long treatment. In our study, we analyze the quality of the YouTube videos concerning hypothyroidism as a "source of health information" for the patients, and the (possible) correlation between video quality and video popularity. METHODS We included 96 YouTube videos obtained by using the following search terms: "hypothyroidism," "Hashimoto's disease," "thyroid insufficiency," and "low thyroid hormone." We evaluated video quality by using the DISCERN criteria, and video popularity by using the Video Power Index. RESULTS The mean DISCERN Score for both raters was 1.995, indicating poor YouTube videos' quality. Sixty-eight videos achieved a high score in the video power index (VPI). The mean popularity score for videos with misleading information was higher than the mean score for all evaluated videos. CONCLUSIONS The overall quality of YouTube videos regarding hypothyroidism was poor. Videos frequently lack the source of information presented. Besides, content is often incomplete, and sometimes includes misleading statements. Physicians dealing with hypothyroid patients should be aware of the possibility that information and instruction they give to patients could be "modulated" by the availability of both low quality and popular alternative "sources of medical knowledge."

Abstract
Modernization of society from a rural, hunter-gatherer setting into an urban and industrial habitat, with the associated dietary changes, has led to an increased prevalence of cardiometabolic and additional noncommunicable diseases, such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and neurodegenerative and autoimmune disorders. However, while dietary sciences have been rapidly evolving to meet these challenges, validation and translation of experimental results into clinical practice remain limited for multiple reasons, including inherent ethnic, gender, and cultural interindividual variability, among other methodological, dietary reporting-related, and analytical issues. Recently, large clinical cohorts with artificial intelligence analytics have introduced new precision and personalized nutrition concepts that enable one to successfully bridge these gaps in a real-life setting. In this review, we highlight selected examples of case studies at the intersection between diet-disease research and artificial intelligence. We discuss their potential and challenges and offer an outlook toward the transformation of dietary sciences into individualized clinical translation.

Abstract
Nutrition is of paramount importance not only for healthy individuals, but all the more for the ones with pathologies interlinked with the diet. In that light, diet, when used accordingly can act in a protective manner in inflammatory bowel diseases. The interplay of diet and IBD is not thoroughly defined, and guidelines are a work in progress. However, significant knowledge has been gained with regard to foods and nutrients that may exacerbate or alleviate the core symptoms. Patients with IBD restrict from their diet a plethora of foods often arbitrary, thus depriving themselves from valuable constituents. Careful navigation into the newfound field of genetic variants and personalization of diet should be employed with avoidance of the Westernized diet, processed foods and additives, and focus on a holistic approach with a balanced diet rich in bioactive compounds in order to improve the quality of life of these patients and address diet-related deficiencies.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic and incurable conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract with an increasing incidence and prevalence worldwide. Common symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. Despite recent advances in medical management, many patients fail to achieve clinical remission and healing of the mucosa of the bowel. The cause is thought to involve an inappropriate reaction of the immune system, the microbiome and the environment in genetically susceptible individuals, leading to chronic bowel inflammation. Evidence is emerging that diet is a key environmental factor that might influence disease onset and course, and therefore may become a therapeutic strategy to mitigate inflammation and symptoms. Since IBD is a heterogeneous disease on a clinical and a molecular level, personalizing dietary advice could be the crucial factor to achieve long-lasting changes in dietary behaviors that could not only improve nutritional status but also tackle gut inflammation and abdominal symptoms on an individual level. In this review, we first discuss different aspects of personalized nutrition, namely the level, focus, and scope of personalized dietary regimens. Then, we provide a framework for the different goals of nutritional therapy in IBD and current evidence for personalized dietary approaches. Lastly, we discuss the need for adequate trial designs, access to the right data types and the bioinformatic tools that are necessary to develop algorithms that will allow us to move from general "healthy eating" advice to truly personalized nutritional plans for the individual IBD patient.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and dual-diagnosis IBS and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) report that symptoms originate from or are exacerbated by trigger foods. Despite patient interest and need, there is no consensus on what diet is optimal. Popular diets have notable limitations including cost, length, implementation complexity, and lack of personalization. METHODS This pilot study evaluated the feasibility, desirability, and effect on gastrointestinal symptoms of a digitally delivered personalized elimination diet for patients with IBS and comorbid IBS/IBD, powered by machine learning. Participants were recruited online and were provided access to a digital personalized nutrition tool for 9 weeks (N = 37; IBS only = 16, Crohn's disease and IBS = 9, and ulcerative colitis and IBS = 12). RESULTS Significant symptom improvement was seen for 81% of participants at study midpoint and persisted for 70% at end point, measured by the relevant symptom severity score (IBS symptom severity score, Patient Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index, or Mobile Health Index for Crohn's disease). Clinically significant symptom improvement was observed in 78% of participants at midpoint and 62% at end point. Twenty-five participants (67.6%) achieved total symptomatic resolution by the end of study. Patient-reported quality of life improved for 89% of participants. Ninety-five percentage daily engagement, 95% retention, 89% adherence and 92% satisfaction with the program were reported. DISCUSSION Dietary elimination can improve symptoms and quality of life in patients with IBS and comorbid IBS/IBD. Digital technology can personalize dietary interventions and improve adherence. Randomized controlled trials are warranted.

Abstract
Checkpoint molecules are cell surface receptors on immune cells that mitigate excessive immune responses, but they have increased expression levels in cancer to facilitate immune escape. Checkpoint blockade therapies (e.g., anti-PD-1, anti-CTLA-4, and anti-LAG-3 therapy, among others) have been developed for multiple cancers. Colitis associated with checkpoint blockade therapy has pathophysiological similarities to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Current therapeutic guidelines for checkpoint blockade-induced colitis include corticosteroids and, if the patient is refractory to steroids, immunomodulating antibodies, such as anti-TNF and anti-integrin agents. Interestingly, immunomodulatory molecules, such as TNFα, are upregulated in both IBD and checkpoint-mediated colitis. The inflammatory colitis toxicity symptoms from checkpoint blockade are similar to clinical symptoms experienced by patients with IBD. The pathophysiologic, dietary, and genetic factors associated with IBD will be reviewed. We will then explain how the principles developed for the treatment of IBD can be applied to patients experiencing inflammatory bowel toxicity secondary to checkpoint blockade.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There remains limited data supporting the efficacy of dietary therapy in adults with Crohn's disease (CD). This was a pilot study of the McMaster Elimination diet for CD (MED-CD), which excludes several potentially detrimental ingredients commonly found in the Western diet. METHODS Prospective study in adults with mild-moderately active CD [Harvey-Bradshaw Index (HBI) scores 5-16] and endoscopic disease activity of >7 (or ≥4 for isolated ileal disease) as measured by the Simple Endoscopic Score for Crohn's disease (SES-CD). Patients were treated for 2 weeks using oral enteral nutrition (EN). Those with symptomatic improvement (HBI score reduction ≥2) were transitioned to the MED-CD for 12 weeks. Outcomes of interest included satisfactory adherence (≥20 on the modified medical adherence report scale-5 questionnaire), clinical remission (CR) (HBI ≤4), clinical response (HBI reduction ≥3), endoscopic response (SES-CD reduction ≥50%), and endoscopic remission (ER) (SES-CD <3). RESULTS A total of 17 patients were treated with 2 weeks of EN. Of these, 13 were deemed responders and treated with 12 weeks of MED-CD. Satisfactory adherence was reported among 11/13 (84.6%) at week 6 and 8/12 (67%) at week 14. Of the 13 patients who responded to EN by week 2, 5 (38.5%) had attained CR at week 2 and maintained CR until week 14 using MED-CD. Endoscopic response was observed in 6 (46.2%) participants and ER was seen in 2 (15.4%). CONCLUSIONS Two weeks of oral EN followed by 12 weeks of the MED-CD was acceptable by most adult patients who enroled in this study.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, and the exact pathogenesis is still unclear. It is believed that IBD develops in response to a complex interaction between the microbiota, environmental factors, and the immune system, in genetically predisposed individuals. Identifying these environmental factors will offer more insight in the development of the disease, and reveal new therapeutic targets for IBD patients. One of the environmental factors that has gained more interest over the last years is our diet. The prevalence of IBD has increased significantly and this increase is thought to be associated with a ‘Western diet', characterized by high intake of fats, added sugar, meat, and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The UPFs now account for almost 50% of the energy intake in Westernized countries and are therefore an important characteristic of this Western diet. UPFs are characterized by higher amounts of salt, fat, sugar and the presence of different food additives. Epidemiological studies have found associations between UPF intake and a range of non-communicable diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Preclinical and clinical evidence suggest that non-nutritive ingredients and additives, present in UPFs, can negatively affect different components of the intestinal barrier, such as the microbiota, the mucus layer, the epithelium, and the immune cells in the lamina propria. Disruption of this barrier can cause the immune system to encounter an increased bacterial exposure, leading to an aberrant immune response. In this article, the available evidence on the possible role of UPFs and their components in the increasing incidence and prevalence of IBD is reviewed. These findings can be translated to the clinic and may be helpful to consider when giving dietary advice to IBD patients. A better understanding of the role of UPFs may lead to less restrictive diets for patients with IBD, hence increasing the dietary compliance and efficacy of exclusion diets.

Abstract
A crucial factor for the development of inflammatory autoimmune diseases is the occurrence of antibodies directed against self-tissues and structures, which leads to damage and inflammation. While little is known about the cause of the development of mis-directed, disease-specific T and B cells and resulting IgG autoantibody responses, there is increasing evidence that their induction can occur years before disease symptoms appear. However, a certain proportion of healthy individuals express specific IgG autoantibodies without disease symptoms and not all subjects who generate autoantibodies may develop disease symptoms. Thus, the development of inflammatory autoimmune diseases seems to involve two steps. Increasing evidence suggests that harmless self-directed T and B cell and resulting IgG autoantibody responses in the pre-autoimmune disease stage might switch to more inflammatory T and B cell and IgG autoantibody responses that trigger the inflammatory autoimmune disease stage. Here, we summarize findings on the transition from the pre-disease to the disease stage and vice versa, e.g. by pregnancy and treatment, with a focus on low-/anti-inflammatory versus pro-inflammatory IgG autoantibody responses, including IgG subclass and Fc glycosylation features. Characterization of biomarkers that identify the transition from the pre-disease to the disease stage might facilitate recognition of the ideal time point of treatment initiation and the development of therapeutic strategies for re-directing inflammatory autoimmune conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diet and nutrition have emerged as key factors in the development and course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including the approach to therapy. We present an overview of evidence-based recommendations and recent research in dietary therapy and nutrition management for patients with IBD. RECENT FINDINGS Patients with IBD should undergo a comprehensive nutrition assessment with the assistance of a registered dietitian (RD), including screening for micronutrient deficiencies. Multiple specialized whole foods and liquid formula diets have been evaluated as part of induction and maintenance therapy for IBD. Nutritional status should ideally be optimized in the perioperative setting as well. Nutritional issues are prevalent among IBD patients and should be addressed by a multidisciplinary team, tailored to each patient's disease type, severity and course, including response to medical therapy and need for surgical management, as well as relevant psychosocial considerations.

Abstract
Historically, dietitians played a minor part in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Patients were commonly referred for consequences of uncontrolled disease, such as malnutrition and bowel obstruction risk. Today, dietitians are fundamental members of the multidisciplinary IBD team, from educating on the role of diet at diagnosis and throughout the lifespan of a patient with IBD to guiding primary induction therapy. This aspect is reflected in published guidelines for IBD management, which previously placed diet as only a minor factor, but now have diet-specific publications. This Review describes a four-step approach in a dietitian's assessment and management of diet in patients with IBD: (1) identifying and correcting nutritional gaps and dietary imbalances; (2) considering diet to treat active disease with the use of exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) or emerging diets that could replace EEN; (3) using therapeutic diets to control existing complications of IBD, such as reduced fibre to prevent bowel obstruction in stricturing disease or a fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols diet to manage co-existing functional gut symptoms; and (4) considering the role of diet in preventing IBD development in high-risk populations.

Abstract
In recent years, the role of diet in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has gained great interest within the scientific community. Eating habits from industrialised countries (the so-called western diet or WD) have been associated with a higher incidence of IBD in observational studies, although the dietary factors responsible for the development of the disease are still to be elucidated. Some components of the diet with proinflammatory potential may cause changes in immunity and intestinal microbiota, leading to the inflammatory reaction that causes IBD-related lesions. The quality of available evidence is low, due to methodological issues, such as the lack of intervention studies, small sample size and heterogeneity of studies. For this reason, scientific societies have offered their recommendations using clinical practice guidelines and consensus documents, in order to establish a common criterion in the nutritional treatment of patients with IBD. The objective of this review was to summarise the data published regarding diet in IBD and review the recommendations given by scientific societies.

Abstract
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that is characterized by the formation of comedones, papules, nodules, abscesses and sinus tracts in the axillary, inframammary, groin, and gluteal areas. Up to 3.8% of the Canadian population has HS, though due to a lack of awareness of HS, many patients are initially misdiagnosed and do not receive adequate treatment early on in the disease course. Once a diagnosis of HS is made, developing an effective management plan can be a dilemma for many providers. There is significant variability in response to any given therapy within the HS patient population and many HS patients have other medical comorbidities which must be taken into consideration. The aim of this review is to provide a practical approach for all healthcare providers to diagnose and manage HS and its associated comorbidities. A sample electronic medical record template for HS management was developed by the Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation Executive Board and is intended for use in clinical settings. This will help to increase collaboration between primary healthcare providers, dermatologists, and other medical specialists and ultimately improve the quality of care that HS patients receive.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diet remains an important topic for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), yet few guidelines for dietary recommendations exist. There is a growing interest in the use of diet as treatment or adjuvant therapy for both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Here, we highlight the latest evidence on the use of diet for treatment of symptoms, active disease and maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. RECENT FINDINGS The Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED) and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) are studied diets that have gained popularity, but there is growing interest in the use and efficacy of less restrictive diets such as the Mediterranean diet. Recent data suggest healthful dietary patterns alone, with an emphasis on whole foods that are high in vegetable fibre and that promote less consumption of ultra-processed foods may also help achieve remission in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. SUMMARY In this review, we summarize the literature on diet as treatment for IBD. We highlight the latest clinical dietary studies, randomized clinical trials, as well as new and emerging diets for the treatment of IBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic end-product of microbial fermentation produced in the colon that may play a role in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including ulcerative colitis and colon cancer. However, the effect of diet interventions on intestinal burden of H2S gas exposure remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE Determine the effect of short-term (1-week) plant- and animal-based eating patterns on ex vivo fecal H2S production in healthy human volunteers. METHODS The study design was an open-label, cross-over diet study and diets were self-administered. Each participant consumed two interventional diets: 1) an animal-based, low fiber (i.e. western) diet and 2) a plant-based, high fiber diet, separated by a two-week washout period. Participants collected full stool samples at the end of each week, which were processed within 2 h of collection to capture H2S production. Microfluidic qPCR (MFQPCR) was used to simultaneously quantify multiple taxonomic and functional groups involved in sulfate reduction and the fecal microbiota was characterized through high-throughput DNA sequencing. RESULTS Median H2S production was higher following the animal-based diet compared to the plant-based diet (p = 0.02; median difference 29 ppm/g, 95% CI 16-97). However, there was substantial individual variability and 2 of 11 individuals (18%) produced more H2S on the plant-based diet. Using the top and bottom quartiles of H2S percent change between animal- and plant-based diet weeks to define responders and non-responders, significant taxonomic differences were observed between the responder and non-responder cohorts. CONCLUSIONS Here we report that substrate changes associated with a 1-week plant-based diet intervention resulted in lower ex vivo H2S production compared to a 1-week animal-based diet intervention in most healthy individuals. However, H2S responsiveness to diet was not uniform across the entire cohort, and potential H2S production enterotypes were characterized that may predict individualized H2S responsiveness to diet.

Abstract
Crohn's disease (CD) is chronic immune-related disease of the gastrointestinal tract hypothesized to be caused by an interplay of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. With the global incidence increasing, more patients are exploring dietary exposures to explain and treat CD. However, most patients report minimal nutritional education from their provider, and providers report few nutritional resources to help them educate patients. This highlights the previous deficit of literature describing the role and influence of diet in CD. To address this need, this article reviews available literature on the possible roles of diet in the pathogenesis, exacerbation, and treatment of CD.

Abstract
Since the thyroid gland is one of the organs most affected by autoimmune processes, many patients with thyroiditis of Hashimoto (TH) seek medical advice on lifestyle variance and dietary modifications to improve and maintain their hyroid function. In this review, we aim to present and discuss some challenges associated with the nutritional management of TH, focusing on environmental and dietary deficits, inflammatory and toxic nutrients, cyanotoxins, etc. We discuss the relationships among different diets, chronic inflammation, and microbiota, and their impact on the development and exacerbation of TH in detail. We share some novel insights into the role of vitamin D and melatonin for preserving thyroid function during chronic inflammation in autoimmune predisposed subjects. A comprehensive overview is provided on anti-inflammatory nutrients and ecological diets, including foods for cleansing and detoxification, which represent strategies to prevent relapses and achieve overall improvement of life quality. In conclusion, data from biomedical and clinical studies provide evidence that an appropriate dietary and lighting regimen could significantly improve the function of the thyroid gland and reduce the reactivity of autoantibodies in TH. Compliance with nutritional guidelines may help TH patients to reduce the need for medicines.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect the gastrointestinal tract: they include Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Each has a different phenotypic spectrum, characterized by gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal manifestations. People living with IBD are very interested in diet, but little is known about the impact of diet on these patients; no guidelines are available yet. In this review, we analyze the dietary patterns of patients with IBD and the approach to the choices of foods both in adults and pediatric patients. Very often, IBD patients report an intentional avoidance of gluten to manage the disease; furthermore, a proportion of IBD patients believe that dairy products worsen their symptoms and that avoidance may help the disease. They have a low compliance with the Mediterranean Diet, which is considered to have potential benefits but is little used in practice. In conclusion, the review underscores the pivotal role of nutritional counselling in IBD patients, and the importance of future clinical studies to evaluate the beneficial effects of dietary recommendations in the management of IBD.

Abstract
Diet has long been understood to have an intricate association with atopic dermatitis, although much remains unelucidated. Skin barrier dysfunction with dysbiosis and consequent impairment of immune tolerance likely underly the pathogenesis of coincident atopic dermatitis and food allergy. There is a wide range of possible skin reactions to food, complicating the diagnosis and understanding of food allergies. Many patients, parents, and providers incorrectly suspect diet as causative of atopic dermatitis symptoms and many have tried elimination diets. This frequently leads to inaccurate labeling of food allergies, contributing to a dangerous spiral of inappropriate testing, referrals, and dietary changes, while neglecting established atopic dermatitis treatment essentials. Alternatively, certain dietary supplements or the introduction of certain foods may be beneficial for atopic dermatitis management or prevention. Greater consensus on the role of diet among providers of patients with atopic dermatitis is strongly encouraged to improve the management of atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use has become increasingly common. It is also prevalent in patients with chronic liver disease, but the scope, depth, and safety of use is not well known. AIMS This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and patterns of CAM use in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) patients. METHODS Electronic invitation to complete a 22 item CAM-specific questionnaire was posted weekly to well-established AIH Facebook communities (combined membership of 4700 individuals) during a 6-week study period. Age ≥ 18 years and AIH diagnosis made by a treating physician were the eligibility criteria. RESULTS The prevalence of ever CAM use among participants was 56.4%, and nearly 42% used CAM after AIH diagnosis. Among those reporting CAM use after diagnosis, 53.7% (51/95) indicated CAM was used to mitigate AIH-related phenomenon, most often targeting liver inflammation/fibrosis (67.7%), fatigue (51%), joint pain (47.1%), and sleep issues (45.1%). Most frequent physical CAM strategies were exercise (49.5%) and yoga (34%), whereas most frequent consumable CAM included healthier eating (45.3%), cannabidiol preparations (45.3%), and probiotics (44.3%). Seventy-five percent reported that CAM improved AIH symptoms and no severe adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS CAM use in AIH patients is prevalent, yet providers have historically failed to document their patient's CAM strategies. Beyond inherent drug-induced liver injury risk, drug-drug interactions remain a concern and could alter baseline immunosuppression levels in AIH. Despite a majority found CAM approaches that improved targeted symptoms, all were unable to alter the course of chronically prescribed medications by physicians.

Abstract
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract that is a growing public burden. Gut microbes and their interactions with hosts play a crucial role in disease pathogenesis and progression. These interactions are complex, spanning multiple physiological systems and data types, making comprehensive disease assessment difficult, and often overwhelming single-omic capabilities. Stool-based multi-omics is a promising approach for characterizing host-gut microbiome interactions using deep integration of technologies such as 16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, meta-transcriptomics, metabolomics, and metaproteomics. The wealth of information generated through multi-omic studies is poised to usher in advancements in IBD research and precision medicine. This review highlights historical and recent findings from stool-based muti-omic studies that have contributed to unraveling IBD's complexity. Finally, we discuss common pitfalls, issues, and limitations, and how future pipelines should address them to standardize multi-omics in IBD research and beyond.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract due, at least partially, to an aberrant and excessive mucosal immune response to gut bacteria in genetically-predisposed individuals under certain environmental factors. The incidence of IBD is rising in western and newly industrialized countries, paralleling the increase of westernized dietary patterns, through new antigens, epithelial function and permeability, epigenetic mechanisms (e.g., DNA methylation), and alteration of the gut microbiome. Alteration in the composition and functionality of the gut microbiome (including bacteria, viruses and fungi) seems to be a nuclear pathogenic factor. The microbiome itself is dynamic, and the changes in food quality, dietary habits, living conditions and hygiene of these western societies, could interact in a complex manner as modulators of dysbiosis, thereby influencing the activation of immune cells' promoting inflammation. The microbiome produces diverse small molecules via several metabolic ways, with the fiber-derived short-chain fatty acids (i.e., butyrate) as main elements and having anti-inflammatory effects. These metabolites and some micronutrients of the diet (i.e., vitamins, folic acid, beta carotene and trace elements) are regulators of innate and adaptive intestinal immune homeostasis. An excessive and unhealthy consumption of sugar, animal fat and a low-vegetable and -fiber diet are risk factors for IBD appearance. Furthermore, metabolism of nutrients in intestinal epithelium and in gut microbiota is altered by inflammation, changing the demand for nutrients needed for homeostasis. This role of food and a reduced gut microbial diversity in causing IBD might also have a prophylactic or therapeutic role for IBD. The relationship between dietary intake, symptoms, and bowel inflammation could lead to dietary and lifestyle recommendations, including diets with abundant fruits, vegetables, olive oil and oily fish, which have anti-inflammatory effects and could prevent dysbiosis and IBD. Dietary modulation and appropriate exclusion diets might be a new complementary management for treatment at disease flares and in refractory patients, even reducing complications, hospitalizations and surgery, through modifying the luminal intestinal environment.

Abstract
Autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, have distinct clinical presentations but share underlying patterns of gut microbiome perturbation and intestinal barrier dysfunction. Their potentially common microbial drivers advocate for treatment strategies aimed at restoring appropriate microbiome function, but individual variation in host factors makes a uniform approach unlikely. In this Perspective, we consolidate knowledge on diet-microbiome interactions in local inflammation, gut microbiota imbalance and host immune dysregulation. By understanding and incorporating the effects of individual dietary components on microbial metabolic output and host physiology, we examine the potential for diet-based therapies for autoimmune disease prevention and treatment. We also discuss tools targeting the gut microbiome, such as faecal microbiota transplantation, probiotics and orthogonal niche engineering, which could be optimized using custom dietary interventions. These approaches highlight paths towards leveraging diet for precise engineering of the gut microbiome at a time of increasing autoimmune disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this review, we systematically assess whether dietary interventions are effective in attenuating inflammatory biomarkers in IBDs based on clinical trials available in the literature. RESEARCH METHODS & PROCEDURES This review was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the PRISMA. We used the PubMed and SciVerse Scopus databases and the Cochrane collaboration tool to assess the risk of bias in clinical trials. The PICO (patient, intervention, comparison, and outcomes) strategy was used, with the descriptors: "Inflammatory bowel disease", "Crohn's disease", "cd", "ibd", "ulcerative colitis", "uc", "Diet", "Diet Habits", "Feeding", "Nutrients", "Food Intake", "Dietary patterns", "Inflammations", "Inflammation", "acute-phase proteins", "C-reactive protein", "interleukins", "tumor necrosis factor-alpha" and "inflammatory response". There is no conflict of interest. DATA ANALYSIS Fifteen studies were included, with a total of 627 participants. Of the total studies included, seven showed a reduction in some inflammatory markers in response to dietary interventions. This review was registered with the PROSPERO platform under number: CRD42021235150. CONCLUSIONS The results presented in this review reveal that dietary intervention with specific characteristics may be important during the treatment of the inflammatory process in patients with IBDs.

Abstract
A 26-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a two-year history of depression concomitant with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C; constipation subtype, gas/bloating). Past evaluation resulted in a clinical diagnosis of IBS-C in August of 2015. Between August and November of 2015, the patient developed worsening bowel irregularities and persistent depression. The patient opted out of conventional treatment and was referred for nutritional care in November of 2017. Throughout one year of treatment with dietary interventions, Chinese herbal medicine, and targeted nutritional supplementation, the patient gradually reached full remission of all complaints.

Abstract
There is limited information regarding the nutrition profile and diet quality of meal plans from currently popular weight loss (WL) diets in Australia. This includes the energy content (kilojoules), the macronutrient distribution and the micronutrient composition. Further, these diets have not been compared with current government guidelines and healthy eating principles (HEP) for nutritional adequacy. Popular diets were identified through grey literature, trending searches and relative popularity in Australia. Meal plans for each diet were analysed using Foodworks Dietary Software to determine food group intake, micronutrient and macronutrient distribution. The results indicated that all popular diets assessed deviated from government recommended HEP such as the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and the Mediterranean diet. In most cases, both popular diets and the HEP had low intakes of multiple food groups, low intakes of essential micronutrients and a distorted macronutrient distribution. Popular diets may not provide adequate nutrition to meet needs, particularly in the long term and potentially resulting in micronutrient deficiency. When energy restricting for WL, meal plans should be highly individualised in conjunction with a qualified nutrition professional to ensure adequate dietary intake.

Abstract
Despite being a focal issue to patients, the effect of diet on adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains underexplored with limited guidance. While promising clinical trials are currently underway, there is a need for further evidence-based recommendations. As such, we summarize the current evidence on various diets used in the treatment of IBD and also explore the potential applications of dietary data from related immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, to provide additional information to inform IBD providers. To date, there have been multiple diets investigated as adjunctive therapy in IBD, but many associated studies are small, non-randomized, and not controlled. Mediterranean, vegetarian/vegan, and reduced-calorie/fasting diets have been studied and have shown some positive results in other IMIDs, which may suggest potential applicability to those with IBD, but larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed for further guidance. Gluten-free and low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP)diets do not appear to have an impact on IBD disease activity, but low FODMAP may potentially be helpful for those with concurrent functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Specific carbohydrate diets have been mainly assessed in children but show some potential in small adult studies.

Abstract
The food we eat is thought to play a role in both the increasing incidence as well as the course of Crohn's disease. What to eat and what to avoid is an increasingly important question for both patients and physicians. Restrictive diets are widely adopted by patients and carry the risk of inducing or worsening malnutrition, without any guarantees on anti-inflammatory potential. Nevertheless, exploration of novel therapies to improve long-term management of the disease is desperately needed and the widespread use of exclusive enteral nutrition in the induction of paediatric Crohn's disease makes us wonder if a similar approach would be beneficial in adult patients. This narrative review discusses the current clinical evidence on whole food diets in achieving symptomatic and inflammatory control in Crohn's disease and identifies knowledge gaps with areas for future research.

Abstract
There has been an alarming increase in the incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) worldwide over the past several decades. The pathogenesis of IBD involves genetic and environmental factors. Diet is a potentially modifiable environmental risk factor for IBD onset and severity. Diet can promote intestinal inflammation by dysregulating the immune system, altering intestinal permeability and the mucous layer, contributing to microbial dysbiosis, and other mechanisms. Dietary changes therefore might be incorporated into therapeutic strategies for IBD. Enteral nutrition is effective in the treatment of pediatric patients with luminal Crohn's disease, but there have been few studies of the effects of dietary interventions with whole foods-most of these have been studies of exclusion diets in patients with Crohn's disease. We review findings from studies of the effects of dietary patterns, single micronutrients, and food additives in inducing and maintaining remission in patients with IBD. We discuss future directions for research and propose a framework for studies of dietary interventions in the treatment of IBD.

Abstract
This study examined associations between dietary intake and gut and systemic inflammation assessed by fecal calprotectin ≤ or > 100 μg/mg (FCP), C-reactive protein ≤ or > 5 mg/L (CRP) and serum cytokine profiles in Crohn’s disease (CD) patients in clinical remission. A 3-month observational study was conducted at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada between 2016 and 2018 in 66 outpatients with CD in clinical remission. FCP was obtained from stool samples at baseline and 3-months and serum CRP and serum cytokines were assessed at 3-months only (n = 41). Dietary intakes were collected using 3-day food records at baseline and 3-months and categorized as: PREDIMED Mediterranean diet scores (pMDS) total and individual components, the dietary inflammatory index (DII), food groups, and common micro- and macro-nutrients. Statistical models were developed to identify relationships between dietary factors and FCP, CRP and cytokine levels. Daily intake of leafy green vegetables was associated with FCP ≤ 100 μg/mg (p < 0.05). Increasing omega 6:3 ratio was associated with CRP ≤ 5 mg/L (p = 0.02). Different cytokines were significantly associated with various dietary variables. Future studies in patients with greater disease activity should be undertaken to explore these relationships.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease mediated by the immune system and characterized by the importance of diet in pathological development. This study aims to understand how the use of predefined diets can affect the adult population diagnosed with IBD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. From the different databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane, LILACS, CINAHL, and WOS), we found 4195 registers. After a review process, only 31 research studies were selected for qualitative synthesis and 10 were selected for meta-analysis. The variables used were Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) for patients with Crohn’s Disease (CD) and fecal calprotectin (FC), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and albumin (ALB) for patients with IBD. Predefined diets have been shown to have partial efficacy for the treatment of IBD and are compatible with other medical treatments. CDAI improved but with reasonable doubts due to the high heterogeneity of the data, while no differences were observed for ALB, FC, and CRP. More studies that evaluate the influence of predefined diets on IBD patients are needed due to the great variability in diets and the tools used to measure their effects.

Abstract
Evolutionary principles are rarely considered in clinical oncology. We here aimed to test the feasibility and effects of a dietary and physical activity intervention based on evolutionary considerations in an oncological setting. A total of 13 breast cancer patients referred to our clinic for curative radiotherapy were recruited for this pilot study. The women were supposed to undertake a "Paleolithic lifestyle" (PL) intervention consisting of a Paleolithic diet and daily outdoor activity of at least 30 min duration while undergoing radiotherapy. Body composition was measured weekly by bioimpedance analysis. Blood parameters were assessed before, during, and at the end of radiotherapy. A control group on an unspecified standard diet (SD) was assigned by propensity score matching. A total of eleven patients completed the study. The majority of patients (64%) reported feeling good or very good during the intervention. The intervention group experienced an average decrease of 0.4 kg body weight (p < 0.001) and 0.34 kg (p < 0.001) fat mass per week, but fat-free and skeletal muscle mass were not significantly affected. Vitamin D levels increased slightly from 23.8 (11-37.3) ng/ml to 25.1 (22.6-41.6) ng/ml (p = 0.053). β-hydroxybutyrate levels were significantly increased and triglycerides and free T3 hormone levels significantly reduced by the PL intervention. This pilot study shows that adoption of a PL intervention during curative radiotherapy of breast cancer patients is feasible and able to reduce fat mass. Daily outdoor activity could eliminate vitamin D deficiency (vitamin D < 20 ng/ml). Future studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) deserves an informed shared decision-making process between patient and doctor. IBD spans a spectrum of phenotypes that impact each patient uniquely. While treatment has primarily consisted of medical or surgical therapy, dietary approaches have become increasingly relevant. A majority of patients with IBD use some form of dietary modification, and it is common for patients to do this without their physicians’ knowledge. Lack of medical supervision can lead to nutritional deficiencies and a worsening disease state. Some patients work with their medical team to pursue a well-defined exclusion diet as a primary therapy, such as the specific carbohydrate diet, exclusive enteral nutrition, or the Crohn’s disease exclusion diet. The motivations to use dietary therapy for IBD remain unclear and the effectiveness has not been definitively established for many approaches. It is necessary for medical providers to be knowledgeable and to foster open communication with their patients in order to ensure the highest likelihood of remission. This review provides an overview of dietary treatment options, the current knowledge about patient motivations for pursuing dietary therapy, and the roles of patient empowerment and patient activation. We outline areas of improvement for the decision-making process.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a result of a complex interaction between host immune response, the gut microbiome and environmental factors, such as diet. Although scientific advances, with the use of biological medications, have revolutionized IBD treatment, the challenge for maintaining clinical remission and delaying clinical relapse is still present. As exclusive enteral nutrition has become a well-established treatment for the induction of remission in pediatric Crohn's disease, the scientific interest regarding diet in IBD is now focused on the development of follow-on dietary strategies, which aim to suppress colonic inflammation and delay a disease flare. The objective of this review is to present an extensive overview of the dietary strategies, which have been used in the literature to maintain clinical remission in both Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis, and the evidence surrounding the association of dietary components with clinical relapse. We also aim to provide study-related recommendations to be encompassed in future research studies aiming to investigate the role of diet during remission periods in IBD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article provides an updated review on the role of diet in the risk of developing Crohn's disease (CD) and CD management, areas of ongoing study. RECENT FINDINGS Higher intake of dietary fiber (fruit fiber) has been associated with a reduced risk for CD. The exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) diet remains the most validated nutritional recommendation for inducing remission in CD. The specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) has demonstrated reductions in CD severity scores in conjunction with medical therapies, and larger trials on its efficacy are ongoing. Several new exclusion diets modeled after EEN and SCD have shown potential efficacy in smaller studies that warrant replication. There is a paucity of clear dietary recommendations for the reduction in risk of CD clinical relapse. There are various components of diet that likely impact risk for CD development and contribute to its disease course; however, studies are often limited in their size or ability to demonstrate mechanistic causation. Further studies including diets that aim to expand on the restrictive nature of EEN may lead to stronger evidence for a diet-based approach to CD management.

The majority of patients use dietary modifications to manage their symptoms, despite limited research to support these changes. There is emerging data that a plant-based diet will be of benefit to IBD patients.Areas covered: A literature review on the pathogenesis and potential benefits of dietary management of IBD.Expert opinion: A Westernized diet has been associated with IBD risk and relapse; hence a plant-based diet may be of benefit to IBD patients through reducing inflammation and restoring symbiosis. Dietary therapy can be an important adjunct therapy, however, better quality studies are still required.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic immune-related diseases hypothesized to be a sequela of an interplay of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. The global incidence of IBD is increasing, and more patients are exploring diet as a means to explain and treat their IBD. In fact, many patients strongly believe diet plays a fundamental role in the onset and management of their IBD. However, a significant proportion of patients report limited nutritional education from their provider, and providers report limited nutritional resources to aid in discussions with patients. This imbalance between supply and demand likely reflects the previous paucity of available literature characterizing the influence of diet in IBD. To address this gap in knowledge, we review the available literature to characterize the role of diet in the pathogenesis, exacerbation, and treatment of IBD. We aim to provide patients and providers with resources to better understand and discuss the role of diet in IBD, with the overall goal of improving patient care and satisfaction.

Abstract
The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the existing evidence supporting the effectiveness of the neutropenic diet in decreasing infection and mortality among cancer patients. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus for relevant articles published from database inception until March 2019. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for this review. Individual studies were evaluated using the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine guidelines. A total of 473 articles were identified and 11 articles were selected after assessing eligibility. Our review showed that the neutropenic diet does not decrease infection rates or mortality among cancer patients. Currently, there is no uniform definition for the neutropenic diet across different institutions. For example, some institutions follow general food safety practices while others avoid foods that increase exposure to microbes and bacteria, and some follow both. Given these differences in practice regarding what constitutes a neutropenic diet, it is advisable that safe food handling and preparation practices recommended by the Food and Drug Administration be uniformly followed for neutropenic patients.
