Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the high prevalence of mental health difficulties in children and young people with long-term health conditions (LTCs), these difficulties and experiences are often overlooked and untreated. Previous research demonstrated the effectiveness of psychological support provided via a drop-in mental health centre located in a paediatric hospital. The aim of this prospective non-randomised single-arm multi-centre interventional study is to determine the clinical effectiveness of drop-in mental health services when implemented at paediatric hospitals in England. METHODS It is hypothesised that families who receive psychological interventions through the drop-in services will show improved emotional and behavioural symptoms. Outcomes will be measured at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. The primary outcome is the difference in the total difficulties score on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) reported by parent or child at 6 months. Secondary outcomes include self and parent reported Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), self-reported depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety measures (GAD-7) and family satisfaction (CSQ-8). DISCUSSION This trial aims to determine the clinical effectiveness of providing psychological support in the context of LTCs through drop-in mental health services at paediatric hospitals in England. These findings will contribute to policies and practice addressing mental health needs in children and young people with other long-term health conditions. Abstract
Evidence indicates that pediatric chronic health conditions (CHCs) often impair executive functioning (EF) and impaired EF undermines pediatric CHC management. This bidirectional relationship likely occurs due to biobehavioural and social-structural factors that serve to maintain this feedback loop. Specifically, biobehavioural research suggests that inflammation may sustain a feedback loop that links together increased CHC severity, challenges with EF, and lower engagement in health promoting behaviours. Experiencing social and environmental inequity also maintains pressure on this feedback loop as experiencing inequities is associated with greater inflammation, increased CHC severity, as well as challenges with EF and engagement in health promoting behaviours. Amidst this growing body of research, a model of biobehavioural and social-structural factors that centres inflammation and EF is warranted to better identify individual and structural targets to ameliorate the effects of CHCs on children, families, and society at large. This paper proposes this model, reviews relevant literature, and delineates actionable research and clinical implications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Treatment of pediatric growth hormone deficiency (pGHD) with daily injection of recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin) aims to increase height velocity and improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The Quality of Life in Short Stature Youth (QoLISSY) questionnaire was administered in a phase 3 clinical trial that evaluated efficacy and safety of once-weekly somatrogon versus once-daily somatropin in children with pGHD (ClinicalTrials.gov no NCT02968004). METHODS Treatment-naïve prepubertal children with pGHD received once-weekly somatrogon or once-daily somatropin for 12 months. The QoLISSY core module (physical/social/emotional subscales) was administered at baseline and 12 months after treatment initiation. QoLISSY-Parent was completed by parents/caregivers of children <7 years old and some parents/caregivers of children ≥7 years old; children ≥7 years old self-completed QoLISSY-Child. RESULTS Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups (N = 117). Among children <7 years old, QoLISSY-Parent total and subscale scores showed similarly improved HRQoL at 12 months relative to baseline in both treatment groups. Self-reported QoLISSY-Child total and subscale scores in children ≥7 years old indicated HRQoL improvements at 12 months that were numerically better with somatrogon than somatropin (similar results with QoLISSY-Parent in this age group). At both time points, children reported better HRQoL than perceived by their parents/caregivers. CONCLUSION Treatment for 12 months with once-weekly somatrogon or once-daily somatropin resulted in comparable improvements in HRQoL among children with pGHD. Lower HRQoL perceived by parents/caregivers possibly reflect children's tendency to emphasize adaptation. These results suggest that evaluation of HRQoL could help support treatment decisions in children with pGHD treated with growth hormone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term illness exposes children with chronic diseases to a high risk of deterioration of physical and mental health. Developing an effective family resilience intervention program is a critical concern. OBJECTIVE To develop a theory-based family resilience intervention program for parents of children with chronic diseases and provide a reference for clinical intervention. METHODS A two-phased research design, guided by the Walsh family resilience process model, was employed to develop the intervention program. In phase 1, a scoping literature review was conducted to identify the possible elements of family resilience interventions. In phase 2, a three-round Delphi survey was conducted with experts (n = 14) using an online electronic survey to obtain their consensus on the intervention content. RESULTS Three main components were identified: (1) strengthening family beliefs, (2) adjusting the family organization pattern, and (3) improving the family communication process. And 8 modules were developed: "introducing adversity and family resilience", "finding and strengthening positive family beliefs, and building confidence to live with the disease", "analyzing and adjusting family structure", "assisting families to increase and utilizing internal and external resources", "optimizing communication skills", "strengthening collaborative problem-solving capacity", "enhancing the family narrative ability", and "enhancing emotional expression". After 3-round Delphi, the findings indicated that the intervention program is applicable and feasible for parents of children with chronic diseases in China. CONCLUSION The principal merit of this study lies in the development of a family resilience intervention program for parents of children with chronic diseases. The intervention's usability and efficacy should be investigated in future studies. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Developing a family resilience intervention program is a critical first step toward providing effective care for parents of children with chronic diseases, and evaluating the program's feasibility and suitability in the target population is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on everyday life and in general, reduced the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of adolescents. In this study, we assess the HRQoL of adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Germany since the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic by using self-report and parent-proxy reports, to identify risk factors, to compare to peers and to examine the agreement of HRQoL between parents and their children. METHODS A total of 445 adolescents (12-18 years) and 413 parents participated in an anonymous cross-sectional survey conducted at three German diabetes centres from January 2021 to June 2022. Inclusion criteria were diabetes duration ≥1 year and German-speaking. Teen HRQoL was assessed by using self-report and parent-proxy report versions of the KIDSCREEN-10 index. RESULTS The majority of adolescents reported average (75.5%) HRQoL. Approximately 11.3% of teens reported high and 13.2% low HRQoL. Teen's female gender, older age, higher diabetes burden and parental depression symptoms contributed to lower self-reported HRQoL among teens. For parent-proxy reports, increasing diabetes burdens, parental depression symptoms, non-migrant status, high education and ketoacidosis contributed to lower scores on teen HRQoL. The mean scores of the KIDSCREEN-10 index for adolescents did not differ from the German norm. In comparison to healthy peers during the first wave of the pandemic, adolescents in the current study reported higher HRQoL. The overall teen-parent agreement was fair although parents reported significantly lower teen HRQoL than adolescents did. CONCLUSIONS HRQoL of most adolescents with T1D during the COVID-19 pandemic was average with parents reporting significantly lower scores. Self-reported and parent-proxy-reported HRQoL and the level of agreement due to different perspectives can provide important information for clinical care and intervention planning.

Abstract
Background Disorders of the Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBIs) account for 50% of pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) consultations. Children with DGBIs have worse quality of life (QoL) than those with organic GI disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Pediatric DGBIs patients, especially those with chronic abdominal pain (AP), have impaired QoL and increased psychological distress in the form of anxiety and depression. Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Field Stimulation (PENFS) therapy has been shown to be effective in improving symptoms and functioning in children with DGBIs. The treatment's impact on these patients' QoL is unknown. Methods This prospective study evaluated changes in QoL, gastrointestinal symptoms, functional disability, somatization, global health, anxiety, and depression in patients aged 11-18 years who received PENFS therapy (IB-stim, NeurAxis, Versailles, IN) for treatment of pain related DGBIs, once a week for four consecutive weeks. Results This study included 31 patients with an average age of 15.7 years (SD = 2); 80.6% were female. After PENFS therapy, patients reported significant reductions in abdominal pain, nausea severity, functional disability, somatization, and anxiety from baseline to week 4 (p < 0.05). Parents reported significant improvement in their child's QoL regarding physical function, psychosocial function, and generic core scale scores (p < 0.05). Parents also noted reduced abdominal pain, functional disability, and somatization. Average scores on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Global Health scale significantly improved based on both patient and parent reports (p < 0.05). Our patients' QoL was significantly lower than healthy controls at baseline and after treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion Our research demonstrates that PENFS significantly enhances the QoL of children suffering from pain-related DGBIs, in addition to improvement in GI symptoms, daily functioning, somatization, global health, and psychological comorbidities. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of PENFS and its potential to alleviate the suffering of countless children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent decades, 95% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) can survive to adolescence and adulthood. However, adolescents with CHD are prone to poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It is imperative to develop a reliable and valid instrument for health professionals to monitor the HRQoL. This study aims to: (1) evaluate the psychometric properties of the traditional Chinese version of Pediatric Quality of Life™ 3.0 Cardiac Module (PedsQL-CM) and measurement invariance across adolescents with CHD and their parents; and (2) investigate the adolescent-parent agreement in HRQoL. METHODS A total of 162 adolescents and 162 parents were recruited. Internal consistency was examined using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's Omega. The criterion-related validity was evaluated with intercorrelations between the PedsQL-CM and PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core (PedsQL-GC) Scale. The construct validity was examined by second-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Measurement invariance was evaluated using the multi-group CFA. The adolescent-parent agreement was analyzed with the intraclass correlation (ICC), paired t-tests, and Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS PedsQL-CM showed acceptable internal consistency (self-reports 0.88, proxy-reports 0.91). The intercorrelations were medium to large effect size (self-reports 0.34-0.77, proxy-reports 0.46-0.68). The CFA supported the construct validity (CFI = 0.967, TLI = 0.963, RMSEA = 0.036, 90% CI = 0.026-0.046, SRMR = 0.065). The multi-group CFA proved scalar invariance between self and parent proxy-reports. Parents significantly underestimated their adolescents' HRQoL in cognitive problems (Cohen's d = 0.21) and communication (Cohen's d = 0.23) subscales, while there was a negligible difference in total HRQoL (Cohen's d = 0.16). ICCs were poor to moderate effect size with the highest and lowest agreement in heart problems and treatment subscale (ICC = 0.70) and communication subscale (ICC = 0.27), respectively. The Bland-Altman plots showed lesser variability in the heart problem and treatment subscale and the total scale. CONCLUSION The traditional Chinese version of PedsQL-CM has acceptable psychometric properties to measure disease-specific HRQoL in adolescents with CHD. Parents may be proxies for adolescents with CHD to rate total HRQoL. When the patient-reported score is the primary outcome, the proxy-reported score could serve as a secondary outcome for research and clinical evaluation.

Abstract
Supporting a child's health-promoting lifestyle is an investment in their future health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Particularly children with overweight and obesity may be at an increased risk of a poor HRQoL. Currently, a comprehensive evaluation of lifestyle factors and age in relation to HRQoL in healthy children and, further, separate child and parental proxy-reports of HRQoL are lacking. The aims of this cross-sectional study in Finland are to compare healthy elementary school-aged children's and parents' reports of the child's HRQoL, and to view them in relation to lifestyle markers. The HRQoL was measured with Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM 4.0, and the following lifestyle markers: leisure-time physical activity as MET, diet quality via a validated index (ES-CIDQ), sleeping time and screen time by questionnaires. Furthermore, age and BMI were recorded. Data were obtained from 270 primary school-aged children (6-13 years). Female gender, the child's older age (8-13 years), high physical activity level and less screen time were strong predictors of a higher HRQoL in both the child's and parental proxy-reports. Means to promote healthy lifestyles should be particularly targeted to young children, especially boys, and new ways to promote physical activity and other forms of free-time activities should be sought.

Abstract
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), as a chronic condition, is associated with symptoms negatively impacting health-related quality of life (HRQL). Regarding growing interest in the implementation of the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), we aimed to review the non-disease specific PROMs addressing HRQL assessment, potentially useful in the clinical care of JIA and daily practice. A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and Embase databases (1990 to 2021), with a focus on the recent 5-years period. Entry keywords included the terms: “children”, “adolescents”, “JIA”, “chronic diseases”, “HRQL”, “PROMs” and wordings for the specific tools. Several available PROMs intended to measure HRQL, non-specific to JIA, were identified. The presented outcomes differed in psychometric properties, yet all were feasible in assessing HRQL in healthy children and those with chronic diseases. Both EQ-5D-Y and PedsQL have already been tested in JIA, showing relevant reliability, validity, and similar efficiency as disease-specific measurements. For PROMIS® PGH-7 and PGH-7 + 2, such validation and cross-cultural adaptation need to be performed. Considering the future directions in pediatric rheumatology, the large-scale implementation of PROMIS® PGH-7 and PGH-7 + 2 in JIA offers a particularly valuable opportunity. The PROMs reflect the patient perception of the chronic disease and allow to understand child’s opinions. The PROMs may provide an important element of the holistic medical care of patients with JIA and a standardized tool for clinical outcomes, monitoring disease severity and response to treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyse: 1) the differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) between typically developing (TD) children and children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) according to parents' and children's perception, and 2) the differences and level of agreement between parents and children's perceptions in HRQoL in both children's samples. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis in 115 Spanish schoolchildren 4-to-7 years. Motor competence and HRQoL were assessed using the MACB-2 and the KINDL-R questionnaire, respectively. RESULTS ANCOVA model showed that children with DCD children obtained lower scores in physical well-being, friends, school and total HRQoL dimensions than TD peers after controlling for covariates (p < 0.05). Moreover, parents' perception scores in HRQoL were lower in children with DCD than in TD peers (79.7 vs 84.8; p = 0.022). Student T-tests for repeated-measures showed non-significant differences between children and parents' perceptions in mean HRQoL scores, by motor competence categories. The intraclass correlations coefficients between parents and children's perception of HRQoL was moderate in DCD category (0.62; p = 0.024) and small in TD category (0.29; p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS Children under 6 years old with DCD have lower HRQoL scores than their TD peers. No differences were found between children's and parents' perceptions in total HRQoL, although the perceptions of children and parents in DCD category showed a significantly higher level of agreement than TD children. Interventions aimed at promoting motor skills in school settings during the preschool age seem necessary to improve children's quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate disagreement between children's self-reported vision-related quality of life (VQoL) and functional vision (FV) and their parents' proxy-reports. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 152 children aged 7-18 years with visual impairment (VI) (defined by the World Health Organization), and their parents, were recruited from 22 National Health Service (NHS) ophthalmology departments in the United Kingdom. Age-appropriate versions of 2 vision-specific instruments, capturing VQoL and FV, were administered to children alongside modified versions for completion by parents on behalf of their child (ie, parent proxy-report). Disagreement between self-report and parent proxy-report was examined using the Bland-Altman (BA) method and a threshold of disagreement based on 0.5 standard deviation. Disagreement was analyzed according to participants' age, sex, and clinical characteristics, using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Children rated themselves as having better outcomes than their parents did, although parents both under- and overestimated their child's VQoL (mean score difference = 7.7). With each year of increasing age, there was a 1.18 (1.04-1.35) higher odds of children self-rating their VQoL better than their parents (P = .013). Although parents consistently underestimated their child's FV (mean score difference = -4.7), no characteristics were significantly associated with differences in disagreement. CONCLUSIONS Disagreement between child self-report on the impact of VI and their parents' proxy-reports varies by age. This implies that self-report from children must remain the gold standard. Where self-reporting is not possible, parent proxy-reports may provide useful insights, but they must be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Isolated methylmalonic acidaemia (MMA) and propionic acidaemia (PA) are rare inherited metabolic diseases. Six years ago, a detailed evaluation of the available evidence on diagnosis and management of these disorders has been published for the first time. The article received considerable attention, illustrating the importance of an expert panel to evaluate and compile recommendations to guide rare disease patient care. Since that time, a growing body of evidence on transplant outcomes in MMA and PA patients and use of precursor free amino acid mixtures allows for updates of the guidelines. In this article, we aim to incorporate this newly published knowledge and provide a revised version of the guidelines. The analysis was performed by a panel of multidisciplinary health care experts, who followed an updated guideline development methodology (GRADE). Hence, the full body of evidence up until autumn 2019 was re-evaluated, analysed and graded. As a result, 21 updated recommendations were compiled in a more concise paper with a focus on the existing evidence to enable well-informed decisions in the context of MMA and PA patient care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare levels of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among children with and without chronic physical and/or sensory conditions, based on PedsQL 4.0 General Core Scales. METHODS Studies were identified with electronic databases (CINAHL, PSYCINFO, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PSYNDEX) and from the PedsQL website. We included controlled studies that compared PedsQL scores of children (mean age < 18 years) with and without chronic physical and/or sensory conditions and uncontrolled studies on children with chronic physical and/or sensory conditions from countries where data from peers without chronic conditions have been published. Random-effects meta-analyses were computed. RESULTS In total, 1,231 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. There were large declines of the total and physical score as well as medium-sized declines of psychosocial health and its subscales, based on criteria of interpreting effect sizes by Cohen [Cohen, J. (1992). A power primer. Psychological Bulletin, 112, 155-159]. Children with cerebral palsy and spina bifida showed the largest declines across all scales, but significant declines emerged in all compared 29 chronic conditions. We identified moderating effects of duration of the chronic condition, rater, child gender, country, sociodemographic equivalence of the compared groups, type of control condition, and publication status. CONCLUSIONS Young people with chronic health conditions should be screened for HRQOL, and the profile across different domains should be preferred over the use of a sum score. Child self-reports are particularly relevant for assessing emotional and social functioning. Effective measures aimed at improving HRQOL are needed, especially if the chronic condition leads to severe declines of physical functioning.

Abstract
PURPOSE Caring for children with chronic diseases, caregivers have to manage their child's daily life to prevent complications and improve their quality of life. This study investigated family management of children with chronic diseases, quality of life of children, and correlation between family management of caregivers and quality of life of children as perceived by the caregivers. PATIENTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study collected data from 200 pairs of caregivers and children with asthma, anemia, and thalassemia aged 5 to 12 years after receiving treatment and follow-up in the pediatric outpatient department of the tertiary hospital, June to November 2020. Research instruments comprised a Family Management Measure (FaMM) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL 4.0). Data were analyzed using descriptive and Spearman rank correlation coefficient statistics. RESULTS The caregivers of children obtained a mean score on family management of 166.88 (S.D.= 11.32). The quality of life of children with chronic illness had a mean score of 66.59 (S.D.= 18.63). Correlation analysis revealed that easy family management of the caregivers had a positive correlation with the quality of life of children with chronic diseases. On the contrary, difficulty in family management negatively correlated with the quality of life of the children. CONCLUSION Most caregivers could have easy family management in caring for the children. In summary, easy family management will allow children with chronic illness to receive decent care from their caregivers, contributing to improved quality of life.

Abstract
The sudden appearance and proliferation of coronavirus disease 2019 has forced societies and governmental authorities across the world to confront the possibility of resource constraints when critical care facilities are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of grievously ill patients. As governments and health care systems develop and update policies and guidelines regarding the allocation of resources, patients and families affected by chronic disabilities, including many neuromuscular disorders that affect children and young adults, have become alarmed at the possibility that they may be determined to have less favorable prognoses due to their underlying diagnoses and thus be assigned to lower priority groups. It is important for health care workers, policymakers, and government officials to be aware that the long-term prognoses for children and young adults with neuromuscular disorders are often more promising than previously believed due to a better understanding of the natural history of these diseases, benefits of multidisciplinary supportive care, and novel molecular therapies that can dramatically improve the disease course. Although the realities of a global pandemic have the potential to require a shift from our usual, highly individualistic standards of care to crisis standards of care, shifting priorities should nonetheless be informed by good facts. Resource allocation guidelines with the potential to affect children and young adults with neuromuscular disorders should take into account the known trajectory of acute respiratory illness in this population and rely primarily on contemporary long-term outcome data.
