Abstract
Background Preemptive kidney transplantation (PKT) is associated with reduced dialysis-related morbidity and improved graft survival, which has led to an increase in the prevalence of PKT. The distinct clinical pathways of PKT and non-preemptive kidney transplantation (NPKT) patients may affect their ability to perform self-care, a key factor in post-transplant recovery. However, there is ongoing controversy regarding which group demonstrates better self-care abilities, highlighting the need to explore the factors influencing self-care in each group. Objectives This study aims to identify and compare predictors of self-care in PKT and NPKT groups. Methods We collected data from 209 KT recipients, consisting of 101 PKT and 108 NPKT patients, using self-administered questionnaires. These questionnaires assessed general and disease-specific characteristics, stress, social support, and self-care behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results The study identified significant predictors of self-care among both PKT and NPKT patients. For PKT patients, marital status (β = .19, p = .033) and family support (β = .28, p = .006) are key predictors of self-care, with those having spousal support and strong family networks reporting better self-care levels. Conversely, in NPKT patients, significant predictors of self-care included marital status (β = .31, p = .001), employment status (β = .29, p = .007), post-transplantation duration (less than 36 month) (β = -.22, p = .015), post-transplantation duration (36-72 month) (β = -.33, p = .001), and stress levels (β = -.20, p = .028). Conclusions The study provides valuable insights into the predictors of self-care based on preoperative dialysis status, illustrating distinct predictors between the growing population of PKT and NPKT patients. These findings emphasize the need for personalized nursing strategies to enhance post-transplant self-care, tailored to individual patient characteristics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the last two decades, the use of oral anticancer agents (OAAs) has increased in cancer patients. Despite this, patients and their caregivers face some challenging issues (side effects, drug-to-drug interactions, etc.) related to OAA administration. The three dimensions of self-care by Riegel et al., self-care maintenance (i.e., stability of patient condition), self-care monitoring (i.e., detection of side effects), and self-care management (i.e., management of side effects), may be implemented to avoid negative outcomes. However, knowledge of self-care determinants is necessary to recognise people at risk of poor self-care behaviours. AIMS Determine which are the predictors of self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring and self-care management in patients with cancer taking OAA. METHODS A systematic review with narrative synthesis was conducted. We included studies on adult patients with cancer using any kind of oral anticancer agent and describing a predictor of self-care. The search was performed on PubMed, CINAHL/PsycINFO, and Web of Science. RESULTS Of 3,061 records, 45 studies were included in this review. Forty-six predictors organised into 14 categories were identified. In general, all studies focused only on adherence, considered as a self-care maintenance component, and none of them focused on other dimensions of self-care. The predictors of OAA adherence most reported were age, side effects, and socioeconomic factors (e.g., insurance status, and annual income). CONCLUSIONS This systematic review highlighted the literature gap on the analysis of determinants of self-care behaviours in patients taking OAAs. This element could be a starting point for future research that can provide elements to support the oncology nursing research agenda, aimed at recognising patients at risk of poor self-care.

Abstract
Malignant tumors contribute significantly to human mortality. Chemotherapy is a commonly used treatment for tumors. However, due to the low selectivity of chemotherapeutic drugs, immune cells can be damaged during antitumor treatment, resulting in toxicity. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can stimulate immune cells to respond to foreign substances. Here, we found that 10 ng/mL LPS could induce tolerance to antitumor drugs in macrophages without altering the effect of the drugs on tumor cells. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between cells before and after LPS administration using transcriptome sequencing and found to be mainly associated with ATP-binding cassette (ABC)-resistant transporters and glutathione S-transferase (GST). LPS was shown by qRT-PCR and western blotting to promote the expression of ABCC1, GSTT1, and GSTP1 by 38.3 %, 194.8 %, and 27.0 %. Furthermore, three inhibitors (inhibitors of GST, glutathione synthesis, and ABCC1) were used for further investigation, showing that these inhibitors reduced macrophage survival rates by 44.0 %, 52.3 %, and 43.3 %, while the intracellular adriamycin content increased by 28.9 %, 42.9 %, and 51.3 %, respectively. These findings suggest that the protective mechanism of LPS on macrophages is associated with increased GST activity, the consumption of glutathione, and increased expression of ABCC1 protein. Therefore, LPS has a potential role in enhancing immunity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To define the signals that a new artificial intelligence (AI) system must emit to improve adverse drug events (ADEs) management in oral antineoplastic agents (OAA). METHODS A multidisciplinary group of experts in patient safety was set up to define what signals the new AI system must emit to improve ADEs management in OAAs. The baseline data for the new AI system were generated through an observational and ambispective study carried out in a university hospital. All patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected consecutively every working day for 6 months. The ADEs were collected by interview and by the review of health records. The ADEs were categorised according to how they could be detected: patient, analysis, examination. RESULTS The group defined what signals the AI system must emit to improve ADEs management in OAAs: a signal to educate the patient when the possible ADEs were categorised as patient, a signal as a reminder to request a blood test or a microbiological culture when the possible ADEs were categorised as analysis, and a signal as a reminder for the necessity of a clinical examination when the possible ADEs were categorised as examination. A total of 1652 ADEs were reported in the interviews (ADE-interview) with the pharmacist, and doctors noted 1989 ADEs in the health record (ADE-HR). The most frequent ADEs were identified in the patient category. CONCLUSION This study opens a new way for better management of ADEs and is the first step in the development of a future technology, which will improve the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal malignancies represent a particularly challenging condition, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach to management in order to meet the unique needs of these individuals and their caregivers. PURPOSE In this literature review, we sought to describe care delivery interventions that strive to improve the quality of life and care for patients with a focus on gastrointestinal malignancies. CONCLUSION We highlight patient-centered care delivery interventions, including patient-reported outcomes, hospital-at-home interventions, and other models of care for individuals with cancer. By demonstrating the relevance and utility of these different care models for patients with gastrointestinal malignancies, we hope to highlight the importance of developing and testing new interventions to address the unique needs of this population.

Abstract
Herein, a facile and highly sensitive electroanalytical tool for monitoring and quantifying the antineoplastic drug gemcitabine in real sample was provided. In this regard, a novel DNA-biosensor based on Pt-doped ZnO decorated single walled carbon nanotubes (Pt-ZnO/SWCNTs) hybrid nanomaterial modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated. Ds-DNA (Calf Thymus), as a biological recognition element, was decorated onto nanomaterial-modified GCE via layer-by-layer fabrication strategy to attain ultimate biosensor ds-DNA/Pt-ZnO/SWCNTs/GCE. The characterizations confirmed the successful fabrication of hybrid nanomaterial, as well as the modification of electrode surface by fabricated nanomaterial. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed that the nanomaterial modification of GCE surface enhanced the electrical conductivity thanks to the synergistic effects of Pt-ZnO and SWCNTs structures, thereby boosted the electrocatalytic activity of the resultant biosensor. The electrochemical characterization results showed that the suggested biosensor is capable of detecting gemcitabine in a wide concentration range of 0.01-30.0 μM, with a detection limit of 5.0 nM. The intercalation binding mode of Gemcitabine inside guanine and cytosine rich region of DNA receptor was approved by molecular docking study. The results of the experimental data were well congruent with the molecular docking analysis, which showed that the binding mode of gemcitabine drug with ds-DNA was intercalation.

Abstract
Aging and frailty are complex processes implicating multifactorial mechanisms, such as replicative senescence, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, or autophagy disorder. All of these mechanisms drive dramatic changes in the tissue environment, such as senescence-associated secretory phenotype factors and inflamm-aging. Thus, there is a demand for new therapeutic strategies against the devastating effects of the aging and associated diseases. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) participate in a "galaxy" of tissue signals (proliferative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative stress, and proangiogenic, antitumor, antifibrotic, and antimicrobial effects) contributing to tissue homeostasis. However, MSC are also not immune to aging. Three strategies based on MSC have been proposed: remove, rejuvenate, or replace the senescent MSC. These strategies include the use of senolytic drugs, antioxidant agents and genetic engineering, or transplantation of younger MSC. Nevertheless, these strategies may have the drawback of the adverse effects of prolonged use of the different drugs used or, where appropriate, those of cell therapy. In this review, we propose the new strategy of "Exogenous Restitution of Intercellular Signalling of Stem Cells" (ERISSC). This concept is based on the potential use of secretome from MSC, which are composed of molecules such as growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular vesicles and have the same biological effects as their parent cells. To face this cell-free regenerative therapy challenge, we have to clarify key strategy aspects, such as establishing tools that allow us a more precise diagnosis of aging frailty in order to identify the therapeutic requirements adapted to each case, identify the ideal type of MSC in the context of the functional heterogeneity of these cellular populations, to optimize the mass production and standardization of the primary materials (cells) and their secretome-derived products, to establish the appropriate methods to validate the anti-aging effects and to determine the most appropriate route of administration for each case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults living with cancer can experience significant challenges in managing their cancer treatment[s], care, and health. Cancer self-management is much discussed in the research literature, but less is known about the perceptions and experiences of older adults', including their self-management capacities and challenges. This study explored the factors that supported and hindered cancer self-management for older Canadian adults living with cancer. METHODS We conducted a 17-item population-based telephone survey in the Canadian province of British Columbia among older adults (age ≥ 65) living with cancer. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze quantitative data and thematic analysis for open-text responses. RESULTS 129 older adults participated in the study (median age 76, range: 65-93), of which 51% were living with at least one other chronic illness. 20% reported challenges managing their cancer treatment and appointments, while only ~4% reported financial barriers to managing cancer. We organized the findings around enabling and encumbering factors to older adults cancer self-management. The main encumbering factors to self-management included health system and personal factors (physical and emotional challenges + travel). Whereas enablers included: access to interpersonal support, helpful care team, interpersonal support and individual mindset. CONCLUSIONS Considering factors which enable or encumber older adults' cancer self-management is critical to supporting the growing aging population in the work required to manage cancer treatment and navigate cancer services. Our findings may guide the development of tailored resources for bolstering effectual self-management for older Canadians living with cancer.

Abstract
The use of pharmacotherapy for improving healthcare in society is increasing. A vast majority of patients have either received subtherapeutic treatment (which could result from low pharmacokinetic) or experienced adverse effects due to the toxic levels of the drug. The medicines used to treat chronic conditions, such as epilepsy; cardiovascular diseases; and oncological, neurological, and psychiatric disorders, require routine monitoring. New targeted therapies suggest an individualized treatment that can slowly move practitioners away from the concept of a one-size-fits-all-fixed-dosing approach. Therapeutic drug use can be monitored based on pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacometric methods. Based on the experiences of therapeutic drug monitoring of various agents across the globe, we can look ahead to the possible developments of therapeutic drug monitoring in India.

Abstract
Aging is a universal complex and multifactorial physiological process that leads to the increasing incidence of various diseases including cancer. Indeed, 40% of individuals aged 65 years and over will have newly diagnosed cancers. Although most treated patients are elderly people, a low inclusion of the geriatric population is observed in most clinical trials. Furthermore, lethal side effects of antineoplastic therapy are markedly exacerbated with aging. Most cancer therapies were validated on young mice models, complicating results transposition to elderly patients. Thus, understanding the role of aging in tumor progression and response to cancer therapies with accurate preclinical models must be investigated. Therefore, this review aimed to summarize the state of the literature about preclinical models used to investigate the impact of aging microenvironment on tumorigenic potential, and on antineoplastic therapy response. Despite the advances in technology, and the increasing incidence of cancer in the elderly population, this present review focuses on the few studies using preclinical tumor model of aging. Since the biology of aging is challenging, aging animal models are an inevitable prelude. New emerging tools such as human organoid offer a promising path in research dedicated to aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gold nanorods (GNRs) are very promising agents that have multiple applications in medicine and biology. However, the cytotoxic effects of GNRs have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the selective cytotoxic effect of GNRs towards several human tumor cell lines. METHODS To address this issue, three sizes of GNRs (10-nm, 25-nm, and 50-nm) were tested against two human tumor cell lines, namely, human hepatoma HepG2 and human prostate PC3 cancer cells. As GNRs are usually stored in soft tissues inside living bodies, we also tested the effect of GNRs on murine splenocyte viability. To determine if the GNRs displayed selectivity cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, active GNRs with the size showing the least cytotoxicity to splenocytes were then tested against a panel of 11 human tumor cell lines and two human non-tumor cell lines. RESULTS Our results showed that the most cytotoxic size of GNRs is 10-nm, followed by the 25-nm GNRs, while the 50-nm GNRs did not show a significant effect. In addition, the 25-nm GNRs were the least cytotoxic to splenocytes when tested for 24 and 48 h. These GNRs showed a selective cytotoxic effect to prostate cancer PC3 cells with median inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 8.3 + 0.37 µM, myeloblastic leukemia HL60 cells (IC50 = 19.7 + 0.89 µM), cervical cancer HeLa cells (IC50 = 24.6 + 0.37 µM), renal adenocarcinoma 786.0 cells (IC50 = 27.34 + 0.6 µM), and hepatoma HepG2 cells (IC50 = 27.79 + 0.03 µM) when compared to the effect on the non-tumor human cells; skin fibroblast BJ cell line (IC50 = 40.13 + 0.7 µM) or epithelial breast MCF10A cells (IC50 = 33.2 + 0.89 µM). A high selectivity indices (SI) were observed in GNRs-treated PC3 and HL60 cells with values ranging from 1.69 to 4.83, whereas moderate SIs were observed in GNRs-treated HeLa, 786.0, and HepG2 cells with values ranging from 1.19 to 1.63. Other cells did not show a similar selective effect, including human laryngeal HEp2 cells, colon HCT116, metastatic renal adenocarcinoma ACHN cells, and human breast cancer cells (MCF7, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-468 cells). The effect of GNRs was confirmed using the colony formation assay and the effect was found to be cell cycle specific. Finally, it was shown that laser treatment can potentiate the cytotoxic effect of the 25-nm GNRs. CONCLUSION GNRs are selective cytotoxic agents and they have the potential to act as candidate anticancer agents.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of self-management interventions for older adults with cancer and to determine the effective components of said interventions. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of self-management interventions for older adults (65+) with cancer guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement. We conducted an exhaustive search of the following databases: Ageline, AMED, ASSIA, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Medline, PsychINFO, and Sociological Abstracts. We assessed for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and Down & Black for quasi-experimental studies, with data synthesized in a narrative and tabular format. RESULTS Sixteen thousand nine hundred and eight-five titles and abstracts were screened, subsequently 452 full-text papers were reviewed by two independent reviewers, of which 13 full-text papers were included in the final review. All self-management interventions included in this review measured Quality of Life; other outcomes included mood, self-care activity, supportive care needs, self-advocacy, pain intensity, and analgesic intake; only one intervention measured frailty. Effective interventions were delivered by a multidisciplinary teams (n = 4), nurses (n = 3), and mental health professionals (n = 1). Self-management core skills most commonly targeted included: problem solving; behavioural self-monitoring and tailoring; and settings goals and action planning. CONCLUSIONS Global calls to action argue for increased emphasize on self-management but presently, few interventions exist that explicitly target the self-management needs of older adults with cancer. Future work should focus on explicit pathways to support older adults and their caregivers to prepare for and engage in cancer self-management processes and behaviours.

Abstract
Background Increased exercise and physical activity levels are recommended throughout cancer therapy and survivorship. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent social distancing are likely to cause a decline in physical activity. Objective to evaluate the level of unsupervised physical activity of breast cancer survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the factors associated with difficulties in engaging and maintaining recommended physical activity levels. Methods This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study with a sample of 37 breast cancer survivors. They participated in a canoeing training program (project Remama) at the University of São Paulo before the COVID-19 pandemic. Socioeconomic aspects, engagement in physical activity, motivation, and potential exposure to COVID-19 were investigated through an online survey, administered in September of 2020. Results During the pandemic, participants increased their body weight (5 ± 3.4 kg); 90% reported decreasing physical activity levels associated with increased sedentary time. Twenty-one (58%) participants exhibited some COVID-19-related symptoms, most used public transportation (59%), or returned to work during the period of a high incidence of COVID-19. The only factor associated with perceived difficulty in engaging in physical activities was having had more than three cancer treatments (RR: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.07–4.27). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic led to a group of previously active breast cancer survivors to decrease their physical activity, gain weight, and have sedentary behavior. Specific tailored-care interventions are needed to prevent these occurrences, as overweight and physical inactivity may impose an additional risk for breast cancer recurrence and a severe course of COVID-19 in cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To provide an overview of the recent advancements in predicting toxicity associated with cancer treatment in older patients. RECENT FINDINGS Various screening tools and validated risk calculators have been shown to help predict toxicity from surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy has been more challenging to select the appropriate tool to reliably predict patients at risk for toxicity and noncompliance. Ongoing work on electronic geriatric assessment tools is showing promise in making comprehensive assessment more feasible. SUMMARY Selecting appropriate cancer therapy is particularly important in older patients, and validated tools have been developed to guide clinicians for surgery and chemotherapy; however, radiotherapy toxicity remains an area for further development, as does the uptake of existing tools into routine oncology practice.

Abstract
A series of variously functionalized selenium-containing compounds were purposely synthesized and evaluated against a panel of cancer cell lines. Most of the compounds showed an interesting cytotoxicity profile with compound 5 showing a potent activity on MCF7 cells. The ethyl amino derivative 5 acts synergistically with cis-platin and inhibits the GST enzyme with a potency that well correlates with the cytotoxicity observed in MCF7 cells. A computational analysis suggests a possible binding mode on the GST enzyme. As the main outcome of the present study, the ethyl amino derivative 5 emerged as a valid lead compound for further, future developments.
