Abstract
Flame-resistant polymer composites were prepared based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a polymer matrix and a polyphosphonate as flame retardant. Oxalic acid was used as crosslinking agent. LiClO4, BaTiO3, and graphene oxide were also incorporated into PVA matrix to increase the ionic conductivity. The obtained film composites were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and microscale combustion tests. Incorporating fire retardant (PFRV), BaTiO3, and graphene oxide (GO) into a material results in increased resistance to fire when compared to the control sample. A thermogravimetric analysis revealed that, as a general trend, the presence of PFRV and BaTiO3 nanoparticles enhances the residue quantity at a temperature of 700 °C from 7.9 wt% to 23.6 wt%. Their dielectric properties were evaluated with Broad Band Dielectric Spectroscopy. The electrical conductivity of the samples was determined and discussed in relation to the LiClO4 content. The electrical properties, including permittivity and conductivity, are being enhanced by the use of LiClO4. Additionally, a relaxation peak has been observed in the dielectric losses at frequencies exceeding 103 Hz. The electrical properties, including permittivity and conductivity, are being enhanced by the use of LiClO4. Additionally, a relaxation peak has been observed in the dielectric losses at frequencies exceeding 103 Hz. Out of the various composites tested, the composite containing 35 wt% of LiClO4 exhibits the highest alternating current (AC) conductivity, with a measured value of 2.46 × 10-3 S/m. Taking into consideration all the aspects discussed, these improved composites are intended for utilization in the manufacturing of Li-Ion batteries.

Abstract
The development of intelligent materials for protective equipment applications is still growing, with enormous potential to improve the safety of personnel functioning in specialized professions, such as firefighters. The design and production of such materials by the chemical modification of biodegradable semisynthetic polymers, accompanied by modern manufacturing techniques such as electrospinning, which may increase specific properties of the targeted material, continue to attract the interest of researchers. Phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)s have been, thus, synthesized and utilized to prepare environmentally friendly electrospun mats. Poly(vinyl alcohol)s of three different molecular weights and degrees of hydrolysis were phosphorylated by polycondensation reaction in solution in the presence of phenyl dichlorophosphate in order to enhance their flame resistance and thermal stability. The thermal behavior and the flame resistance of the resulting phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) products were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and by cone calorimetry at a micro scale. Based on the as-synthesized phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)s, electrospun mats were successfully fabricated by the electrospinning process. Rheology studies were performed to establish the optimal conditions of the electrospinning process, and scanning electron microscopy investigations were undertaken to observe the morphology of the phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) electrospun mats.

Abstract
As an environmentally friendly water-soluble polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has attracted extensive attention because of its non-toxic, degradable, low cost, and good biocompatibility. Electrospinning is a kind of nanotechnology, and the nanofiber membrane prepared by it has the advantages of large surface area-to-volume ratios, nano- to micron-sized fibers, etc. Herein, a simple and facile one-step green electrospinning method was developed to fabricate various environmentally friendly PVA nanofiber membranes. The lipophilic properties of PVA membranes were investigated and optimized according different PVA concentrations. The PVA electrospun fiber prepared from the solution at a concentration of 10 wt% had the highest adsorption capacity for the adsorption of new and waste engine oils, and the waste engine oil adsorption capacity (12.70 g/g) was higher than that of new engine oil (11.67 g/g). It also has a relatively large BET surface area (12.05 m2/g), a pore volume (0.04 cm3/g), and an appropriate pore diameter (13.69 nm) and fiber diameter (174.21 nm). All electrospun PVA membranes showed excellent lipophilic properties due to their oil contact angles of much less than 30°. Therefore, PVA electrospun fibrous membranes have great application potential in the field of purifying engine oil due to the excellent lipophilic properties and oil absorption capacity.

Abstract
It has always been the goal of flame retardant research to improve the flame retardancy of a polymer efficiently without compromising comprehensive properties such as mechanical properties. For polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), inspired by the multiple hydrogen bonding in spider silk, we design a new type of compound containing phosphorus and nitrogen with multiple hydrogen-bonding reaction sites (N,N',N''-tris(2-aminoethyl)phosphoric triamide (TE)) as it is flame retardant. The dynamic cross-linking structure is constructed, and the hyperdispersion of flame retardancy is achieved by the hydrogen bond self-assembly between TE and PVA, thus the high-performance flame retardant PVA is obtained. With only a 10 wt % addition of TE, the PVA film with a thickness of 0.15 mm can reach the UL94 VTM-0 level, and its tensile strength, ductility, and initial decomposition temperature can be increased by 33, 15, and 12 °C, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen-bonding effect and flame retardant mechanism are characterized and studied. This work overcomes the shortcomings of traditional flame retarding approaches and provides an effective strategy for the preparation of flame retardant polymers with an excellent performance.

Abstract
A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based coating containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and sepiolite nanofillers (SP) and supported by a glass fabric was developed to fire-protect a glass-fiber-reinforced unsaturated-polyester-based (UP) polymer (GFRP). The fire behavior and thermal stability of the PVA coatings were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a cone calorimeter. The coatings’ residues were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results from the cone calorimeter showed that the addition of sepiolite significantly improves the flame retardancy of PVA/APP/SP coatings. The addition of both additives promoted the formation of a cohesive layer composed of a silico-phosphate structure resulting from the reactivity between APP and SP. The fire resistance of the composite laminate protected by PVA coatings was evaluated using a cone calorimeter by measuring the temperature of the back face. Photogrammetry was used to assess the swelling of residues after heat exposure. The interaction between APP and SP in PVA coating leads to the formation of an effective thermal barrier layer. The presence of SP reduces the layer expansion but greatly decreases the backside temperature during the initial period of exposure. The effect was assigned to high thermal stability of the layer and its ability to dissipate heat by re-radiation.

Abstract
There is an increasing demand for sustainable and safe packaging technologies to improve consumer satisfaction, reduce food loss during storage and transportation, and track the quality status of food throughout its distribution. This study reports the fabrication of colorimetric pH-indicative and flame-retardant nanocomposite films (NCFs) based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nanoclays for smart and safe food packaging applications. Tough, flexible, and transparent NCFs were obtained using 15% nanoclay loading (PVA-15) with superior properties, including low solubility/swelling in water and high thermal stability with flame-retardant behavior. The NCFs showed average mechanical properties that are comparable to commercial films for packaging applications. The color parameters were recorded at different pH values and the prepared NCFs showed distinctive colorimetric pH-responsive behavior during the transition from acidic to alkaline medium with high values for the calculated color difference (∆E ≈ 50). The prepared NCFs provided an effective way to detect the spoilage of the shrimp samples via monitoring the color change of the NCFs during the storage period. The current study proposes the prepared NCFs as renewable candidates for smart food packaging featuring colorimetric pH-sensing for monitoring food freshness as well as a safer alternative choice for applications that demand films with fire-retardant properties.

Abstract
A novel nitrogen-containing alkylphosphinate salt-aluminium β-(p-nitrobenzamide) ethyl methyl phosphinate (AlNP) was synthesized and used to flame retard acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy (XRF) were applied to characterize the structure and composition of products. The flame retardancy performance, thermal properties and mechanical strength of the ABS/AlNP with respect to AlNP loading were investigated. AlNP was stable before 330°C and decomposed very slowly with residues high up to 56.1% at 700°C. Adding 25-30 wt% of AlNP alone can make ABS to pass V0 rating in the vertical burning tests (UL 94). The results according to the micro combustion calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis showed that AlNP can depress the heating release and retard the thermal degradation of the ABS. Scanning electron microscopy observation of the residues from LOI test indicated that AlNP formed the condensed and tough residues layer during combustion; XRF analysis showed that the residues contained phosphorus and aluminium element and nitrogen element was not detected. The compact phosphorus/aluminium-rich substance acted as a barrier to enhance flame-retardant properties of the ABS.

Abstract
Hydrophobically modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (hm-PVA) films with various alkyl chain lengths were prepared. Their surface/mechanical properties, cytocompatibility, and porcine skin adhesion strength were evaluated. hm-PVAs had 10 °C higher glass transition temperature than poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (33.4 ± 2.5 °C). The water contact angle of the hm-PVA films increased with alkyl chain length and/or hydrophobic group modification ratio. The tensile strength of the hm-PVA films decreased with increasing alkyl chain length and/or hydrophobic group modification ratio. hm-PVA with short chain lengths (4 mol % propanal-modified PVA; 4C3-PVA) had low cytotoxicity compared with long alkyl chain length hm-PVAs (4 mol % hexanal and nonanal-modified PVA; 4C6-PVA and 4C9-PVA). The 4C3-PVA film had the highest porcine skin adhesion strength. Thus, the 4C3-PVA film is promising as an adhesive for wearable medical devices.

ZB Nps prepared by co-precipitation method are characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, etc. XRD pattern revealed the crystal geometry of ZB Nps and SEM and TEM micrographs depict a rod-like structure with 300–400[Formula: see text]nm size. Appropriate amount of ZB Nps and transition metal salts are mixed with PVA in aqueous medium and thin film samples are obtained by solvent casting method. The vibrational spectra, thermal stability and flammability of the polymeric composites are characterized using FTIR, TG/DTA and Flammability tester, respectively. FTIR spectra confirm the existence of ZB Nps in the prepared polymer composites. TG/DTA studies revealed higher degradation temperature and thermal stability of polymer composite over pure PVA. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) test presented a convincing account about the improved FR nature of obtained polymer nano composite with a significant LOI of 56% compared to virgin polymer which have LOI of 19.6%.
