Abstract
The common clinical chemotherapy often brings serious side effects to patients, mainly due to the off-target and leakage of toxic drugs. However, this is fatal for some specific clinical tumors, such as brain tumors and neuroma. This study performs a drug-free approach by encapsulating black phosphorus (BP) and calcium peroxide (CaO2) in liposomes with surface-modified triphenylphosphonium (BCLT) to develop mitochondria targeting calcification for cancer therapy without damaging normal cells. BCLT preferentially accumulates inside tumor mitochondria and then is activated by near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation to produce abundant PO4 3- and Ca2+ to accelerate in situ mitochondrial mineralization, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cancer cell death. More importantly, both PO4 3- and Ca2+ are essential components of metabolism in the body, and random gradient diffusion or premature leakage does not cause damage to adjacent normal cells. This achievement promises to be an alternative to conventional chemotherapy in clinical practice for many specific tumor types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiographic calcifications and cystic morphology are associated with higher and lower tumor grade, respectively, in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). Whether calcifications and/or cystic morphology could be used preoperatively to predict post-resection survival in patients with PNETs remains elusive. METHODS Patients undergoing curative-intent resection of well-differentiated PNETs from 2000 to 2017 at eight academic institutions participating in the US Neuroendocrine Tumor Study Group were identified. Preoperative cross-sectional imaging reports were reviewed to identify the presence of calcifications and of a cystic component occupying >50% of the total tumor area. Clinicopathologic characteristics and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were compared. RESULTS Of 981 patients studied, 18% had calcifications and 17% had cystic tumors. Tumors with calcifications were more commonly associated with Ki-67 ≥3% (47% vs. 33%; p = 0.029), lymph node metastasis (36% vs. 24%; p = 0.011), and distant metastasis (13% vs. 4%; p < 0.001). In contrast, cystic tumors were less commonly associated with lymph node metastasis (12% vs. 30%; p < 0.001). Five-year RFS after resection was most favorable for cystic tumors without calcifications (91%), intermediate for solid tumors without calcifications (77%), and least favorable for any calcified PNET (solid 69%, cystic 67%; p = 0.043). Calcifications remained an independent predictor of RFS on multivariable analysis (p = 0.043) controlling for nodal (p < 0.001) and distant metastasis (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Easily detectable radiographic features, such as calcifications and cystic morphology, can be used preoperatively to stratify prognosis in patients with PNETs and possibly inform the decision to operate or not, as well as guide the extent of resection and potential use of neoadjuvant therapy.

Abstract
Current lung cancer diagnosis methods encounter delayed visual confirmation of tumor foci and low-resolution metrics in imaging findings, which delays the early treatment of tumors. Here, we developed a potent lung cancer imaging and treatment strategy centered around a nanotransformational concept of tumor iron mineralization in situ, which employs Prussian blue/calcium peroxide nanocomposites as a precursor. The resultant iron mineralization in tumor cells greatly facilitates the early and differential diagnosis of lung carcinoma from benign nodules via medical imaging, meanwhile introducing oxidative stress to activate the cellular apoptosis and ferroptosis pathways, resulting in inhibition of the malignant behavior of tumor cells. Tumor-microenvironment-triggered iron mineralization enables integration of the detection and prevention of tumor metastasis at its early stages with no assistance of toxic drugs, which offers a potential solution for the precise management of lung cancer with ideal outcomes.

Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) scout images, also known as CT localizer radiographs, topograms, or scanograms, are an important, albeit often overlooked part of the CT examination. Scout images may contain important findings outside of the scanned field of view on CT examinations of the abdomen and pelvis, such as unsuspected lung cancer at the lung bases. Alternatively, scout images can provide complementary information to findings within the scanned field of view, such as characterization of retained surgical foreign bodies. Assessment of scout images adds value and provides a complementary "opportunistic" review for interpretation of abdominopelvic CT examinations. Scout image review is a useful modern application of conventional abdominal radiograph interpretation that can help establish a diagnosis or narrow a differential diagnosis. This review discusses the primary purpose and intent of the CT scout images, addresses standard of care and bias related to scout image review, and presents a general systematic approach to assessing scout images with multiple illustrative examples, including potential pitfalls in interpreting scout images.

Abstract
Venous tumour thrombosis refers to the invasion of tumour into the venous system. Extramural venous invasion is routinely searched for and reported in rectal carcinoma due to its prognostic significance and influence on staging, prognosis and treatment approach. We describe a case of extramural venous invasion occurring as superior mesenteric vein tumour thrombus in the setting of a caecal carcinoma.

Tumor calcification as a prognostic factor in cetuximab plus chemotherapy-treated patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Anticancer Drugs 2020; 30:195-200. Abstract

This study aimed to explore the correlation between survival and tumor calcification in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who received cetuximab combined with chemotherapy. The study was a single-center retrospective analysis that enrolled 111 patients who had received therapy between April 2011 and October 2016. Tumor calcification and treatment efficacy were evaluated independently by radiologists on the basis of computed tomography scans. Clinical characteristics and follow-up data were collected from electronic medical records. Correlations between tumor calcification and clinical characteristics, tumor response rate, and patient survival were analyzed. Among the 111 enrolled patients, 27 had tumor calcification [27/111 (24.3%)]. The median progression-free survival was significantly longer for patients with tumor calcification than for those without calcification (9.3 vs. 6.2 months, P=0.022). Patients with tumor calcification also had a higher objective response rate (55.6 vs. 31%, P=0.021) and better overall survival (21.9 vs. 16.5 months, P=0.084). The correlation between calcification features and prognosis showed that patients with an increasing number of calcifications after treatment had a significantly longer median overall survival (22.9 vs. 9.1 months, P=0.033). Simultaneously, new liver metastases and multiple calcifications also showed a trend toward better overall survival. There were also no significant correlations between clinical characteristics (sex, age, gene mutation, primary tumor location, pathological type, blood test result) and survival (Supplementary Table 1, Supplemental digital content 1, http://links.lww.com/ACD/A280). Tumor calcification is associated with a better treatment outcome and is a potential prognostic marker.

Abstract
Amyloidosis is classified according to the amyloid precursor protein, and accurate diagnosis of the amyloidosis type may guide appropriate treatment. Immunohistochemistry and Congo red staining are the most frequently used methods used to distinguish types of amyloidosis, but problems with specificity and sensitivity indicate the need for an alternative diagnostic method. In this study, we evaluated laser microdissection-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LMD-LC-MS/MS) for the diagnosis of amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis in animals. Plasmacytomas with amyloid deposits from 15 dogs and 2 cats were subjected to Congo red staining with or without potassium permanganate pretreatment, immunohistochemistry for kappa and lambda light chains, and LMD-LC-MS/MS. Congo red staining was diagnostic in 12 of 17 cases based on resistance to potassium permanganate pretreatment, but in 5 of 17 cases the pretreatment unexpectedly reduced Congo red staining or abrogated the birefringence and a definitive diagnosis could not be reached. Immunohistochemistry detected kappa or lambda light chains in 6 of 17 cases. With LMD-LC-MS/MS, immunoglobulin lambda light chain was detected in all 17 cases. The amyloid signature proteins ApoA-I, ApoA-IV, and ApoE were detected in 9, 1, and 3 of the 15 canine cases by LMD-LC-MS/MS, but not in the feline cases. In conclusion, LMD-LC-MS/MS consistently determined the amyloid type in all examined specimens, while Congo red staining after potassium permanganate treatment and immunohistochemistry were less sensitive tests.

Abstract
Breast cancer frequently metastasizes to the liver and this usually bears a poor prognosis. Complete calcifications of hepatic, portal vein and inferior vena cava (IVC) metastases from breast cancer after systemic chemotherapy is extremely rare and to our knowledge, has never been reported. It is important for physicians to recognize the pattern and the formation of calcified liver metastases because the radiographic features of calcifications may assist in differentiating the etiologies of underlying malignancies and provide prognostic significance. We here presented such a case of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) with calcified liver, portal vein and IVC metastases, and reviewed the literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Omental calcifications of the peritoneum are typically small and asymptomatic. However, larger psammomatous bodies that cause symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating are often associated with tumors such as primary serous papillary carcinoma, mesothelioma, or metastatic ovarian cancer. CASE REPORT We describe omental calcifications in a 68-year-old woman who had been asymptomatic for the last 10 years. The case details the histomorphologic features and immunohistochemical signature of a 4.0×3.5×1.0 cm mass consisting of mature adipose tissue that was surgically removed together with an 8.5×6.5×1.8 cm irregular intra-abdominal/mesenteric mass composed of yellow-red fatty tissue. Microscopic sections contained fat with variable clustered classic/psammomatous calcifications, some with a thin epithelioid periphery, in association with a very focal and subtle papillary surface epithelial/mesothelial proliferation. Tumor cell invasion was not observed during examination. Immunohistochemical staining showed that mesothelial cells in the mass were strongly positive for calretinin and focally positive for EMA, CK903, and vimentin. Strong nuclear positivity for PAX8 was also reported. Additional stains were added in response to this pattern, showing strong positivity for CK8, moderate positivity for BAP1, focal positivity for ER, minimal positivity for CD56, and negativity for CK5/6 and D2-40. Three possible explanations are suggested for the phenomenon observed in the pathology slides: reactive mesothelial hyperplasia, well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma, or serous papillary carcinoma of the peritoneum. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that these calcifications are a benign, reactive phenomenon, and that the abundance of psammoma bodies may be related to ongoing crops of papillary mesothelial hyperplasia or benign well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between CT features of metastatic calcification and the response to chemotherapy in colorectal cancer metastases. METHODS A total of 27 patients with 30 sites of calcified metastases who underwent chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy (cetuximab) between January 2011 and December 2016 comprised this retrospective study population. Two radiologists independently evaluated the occurrence of tumor calcification before and after treatment, and evaluated the tumor response after therapy. According to the response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (version 1.1), the best curative effect evaluation of the patients was recorded. The patients were divided into groups as below: (1) Patients who showed complete response (CR) and partial response (PR) were assigned to the response group, and the stable disease (SD) and progressive disease (PD) were assigned to the non-response group. (2) Patients showed CR or PR, or patients showed SD with longer progress free survival (PFS) were assigned to the benefit group, and the remaining patients were assigned to the no benefit group. The difference of different imaging calcification features (morphology, maximum density, and density-time slope) were analyzed. RESULTS The most common site of metastases calcification was liver (63.3%), followed by lymph nodes (26.7%). There were 12 cases in the response group, 15 cases in the non-response group; and 13 cases in the benefit group, 14 cases in the no benefit group. The density time growth slope was higher in the response group when compared with the non-response group (P=0.025). The proportion of thhe patients with increased number of calcified foci in the benefit group (61.5%) was higher than that in the no benefit group (14.3%), P=0.018. There was no significant difference in the maximum density between the groups. The calcification of liver metastases were all amorphous calcification, with central calcification (36.8%), eccentric calcification (36.8%), garland calcification (15.8%) and diffuse calcification (10.6%). The lymph node metastases could be diffuse (75.0%), and curve or eggshell calcification (25.0%). There was no statistical difference between the groups. CONCLUSION In patients with advanced colorectal cancer metastases treated with cetuximab combined chemotherapy, rapid growth of calcification density and increased calcification number may be valuable imaging features of therapeutic efficacy. The maximal calcification density and morphology of calcification are not related to the therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
Although calcification in the gynecologic tumor microenvironments is a common phenomenon, doctors and researchers still disregard or ignore the issue. In fact, this change in the gynecologic tumor microenvironments is clinically significant and a number of studies have reported an association between calcification and gynecological tumor progression. In ovarian cancer, calcification is predominantly psammomatous and largely occurs in serous papillary ovarian tumors. In addition, calcification in ovarian cancer correlated with lower histologic grade and may indicate a poorer survival rate. In uterine fibroids, calcification occurs as a degenerative change and is predictive of a good prognosis. As for endometrial cancer and cervical cancer, calcification rarely occurs in these cancers. The mechanism of calcification in the gynecologic tumor microenvironments is not currently clear. One theory is that calcification occurs due to degeneration of the tumor cells; another theory is that calcification occurs in response to secretions from cells in the tumor microenvironment. Although previous studies have revealed a direct association between calcifications and gynecological tumors, this association has not been fully clarified. To better clarify the significance of calcification in terms of diagnosing and treating gynecological tumors, the associations between calcification and the different histologic stages and prognosis in gynecological tumors should be further studied. In particular, more attention should be paid to the morphological characteristics, chemical nature, and mechanism of calcifications in the gynecological tumor microenvironments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to determine if increasing post-therapy calcification in peritoneal metastases in recurrent low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas indicated response to therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients with histologically confirmed, recurrent low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma who received treatment at our institution between 2000 and 2014 was performed. Only patients who had calcified tumor implants and showed either interval increase or decrease in tumor calcification following therapy were included in the study. Pre- and post-therapy CT scans of these patients were reviewed by 2 radiologists independently. Changes in the tumor calcification status and tumor deposits size were correlated with serum CA-125 levels. Fisher's exact test was used to assess the association between peritoneal deposit and calcification status with serum CA-125 status. RESULTS 35 Patients were included in the study. Based on serial serum CA 125 levels, 22 patients (63%) had progressive disease, 12 (34%) had partial response and 1 (3%) had stable disease. Using RECIST 1.1, 16 had progressive disease, 3 had partial response and 16 had stable disease. In the patients with progressive disease, post-therapy tumor calcification increased in 77% and decreased in 23%. Fischer's exact test showed that serum CA 125 change was significantly associated with change in size of peritoneal deposits and calcification change. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary study shows that post-therapy increase in peritoneal implant calcification in low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas is not an indicator of response to therapy.
