Strong rashba-type spin polarization of the photocurrent from bulk continuum States: experiment and theory for Bi(111)

MX family: an efficient platform for topological spintronics based on Rashba and Zeeman-like spin splittings

Taking various combinations of M = (Mo, W) and X = (C, S, Se) as examples, we propose that MX (M = transition metals, X = IV,V or VI elements) family can establish an excellent platform for both conventional and topological spintronics applications based on anisotropic Rashba-like and non-magnetic Zeeman-type spin splittings with electrically tunable nature. In particular, we observe sizeable Zeeman-like and Rashba-like spin splittings with an anisotropic nature. Meanwhile, they exhibit Rashba-like and topologically robust helical edge states when grown in ferroelectric and paraelectric phases, respectively. These MX monolayers are realized to be quantum valley Hall insulators due to valley contrasting Berry curvatures. The carriers in these MX monolayers can be selectively excited from opposite valleys depending on the polarity of circularly polarized light. The amplitude of the spin splitting can be further tuned by applying external means such as strain, electric field or alloy engineering. Furthermore, considering graphene sheet over the WC monolayer as a prototype example, we show that these MX monolayers can boost the relativistic effect by coupling with the systems exhibiting extremely weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Depending on the surface of WC monolayer in contact with the graphene sheet, graphene over WC monolayer passes through the transformation from the semiconducting junction to the Shotcky barrier-free contact. Finally, we reveal that these MX monolayers could also be grown on the substrates such as WS2(001)and GaTe (001) with type-II band alignment, where electron and hole become layer splitted across the interface. Our analysis should be fairly applied to other systems with strong SOC and an equivalent geometrical structure to the MX monolayers.

Hidden spin-orbital texture at the [Formula: see text]-located valence band maximum of a transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor

Finding stimuli capable of driving an imbalance of spin-polarised electrons within a solid is the central challenge in the development of spintronic devices. However, without the aid of magnetism, routes towards this goal are highly constrained with only a few suitable pairings of compounds and driving mechanisms found to date. Here, through spin- and angle-resolved photoemission along with density functional theory, we establish how the p-derived bulk valence bands of semiconducting 1T-HfSe2 possess a local, ground-state spin texture spatially confined within each Se-sublayer due to strong sublayer-localised electric dipoles orientated along the c-axis. This hidden spin-polarisation manifests in a 'coupled spin-orbital texture' with in-equivalent contributions from the constituent p-orbitals. While the overall spin-orbital texture for each Se sublayer is in strict adherence to time-reversal symmetry (TRS), spin-orbital mixing terms with net polarisations at time-reversal invariant momenta are locally maintained. These apparent TRS-breaking contributions dominate, and can be selectively tuned between with a choice of linear light polarisation, facilitating the observation of pronounced spin-polarisations at the Brillouin zone centre for all kz. We discuss the implications for the generation of spin-polarised populations from 1T-structured transition metal dichalcogenides using a fixed energy, linearly polarised light source.

On the problem of Dirac cones in fullerenes on gold

Artificial graphene based on molecular networks enables the creation of novel 2D materials with unique electronic and topological properties. Landau quantization has been demonstrated by CO molecules arranged on the two-dimensional electron gas on Cu(111) and the observation of electron quantization may succeed based on the created gauge fields. Recently, it was reported that instead of individual manipulation of CO molecules, simple deposition of nonpolar C₆₀ molecules on Cu(111) and Au(111) produces artificial graphene as evidenced by Dirac cones in photoemission spectroscopy. Here, we show that C₆₀-induced Dirac cones on Au(111) have a different origin. We argue that those are related to umklapp diffraction of surface electronic bands of Au on the molecular grid of C₆₀ in the final state of photoemission. We test this alternative explanation by precisely probing the dimensionality of the observed conical features in the photoemission spectra, by varying both the incident photon energy and the degree of charge doping via alkali adatoms. Using density functional theory calculations and spin-resolved photoemission we reveal the origin of the replicating Au(111) bands and resolve them as deep leaky surface resonances derived from the bulk Au sp-band residing at the boundary of its surface projection. We also discuss the manifold nature of these resonances which gives rise to an onion-like Fermi surface of Au(111).

Coexisting unconventional Rashba- and Zeeman-type spin splitting in Pb-adsorbed monolayer WSe2

Based on first-principles calculations, the unconventional Rashba- and Zeeman-type spin splitting can simultaneously coexist in the Pb-adsorbed monolayer WSe₂system. The first two adsorption configurationst₁andt₂show remarkable features under the spin-orbit coupling, in which two split energy branches show same spin states at the left or right side of Γ, and the spin polarization is reversed for both Rashba band branches. For the second adsorption configuration, an energy gap was observed near the unconventional spin polarization caused by the repelled Rashba bands for avoid crossing, and this gap can produce non-dissipative spin current by applying the voltage. The results fort₂configuration with spin reversal show that the repel band gap and Rashba parameter can be effectively regulated within the biaxial strain range of -8% to 6%. By changing the adsorption distancedbetween Pb and the neighboring Se atom layer, the reduceddcaused the transfer from Rashba-type to Zeeman-type spin splitting. This predicted adsorption system would be promising for spintronic applications.

Surface Modification and Subsequent Fermi Density Enhancement of Bi(111)

Defects introduced to the surface of Bi(111) break the translational symmetry and modify the surface states locally. We present a theoretical and experimental study of the 2D defects on the surface of Bi(111) and the states that they induce. Bi crystals cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) at low temperature (110 K) and the resulting ion-etched surface are investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) as well as spectroscopy (STS) techniques in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STS measurements of cleaved Bi(111) reveal that a commonly observed bilayer step edge has a lower density of states (DOS) around the Fermi level as compared to the atomic-flat terrace. Following ion bombardment, the Bi(111) surface reveals anomalous behavior at both 110 and 300 K: Surface periodicity is observed by LEED, and a significant increase in the number of bilayer step edges and energetically unfavorable monolayer steps is observed by STM. It is suggested that the newly exposed monolayer steps and the type A bilayer step edges result in an increase to the surface Fermi density as evidenced by UPS measurements and the Kohn-Sham DOS. These states appear to be thermodynamically stable under UHV conditions.

Rashba Effect and Raman Spectra of Tl2O/PtS2 Heterostructure

The possibility to achieve charge-to-spin conversion via Rashba spin-orbit effects provides stimulating opportunities toward the development of nanoscale spintronics. Here, we use first-principles calculations to study the electronic and spintronic properties of Tl₂O/PtS₂ heterostructure, for which we have confirmed the dynamical stability by its positive phonon frequencies. An unexpectedly high binding energy of -0.38 eV per unit cell depicts strong interlayer interactions between Tl₂O and PtS₂. Interestingly, we discover Rashba spin-splittings (with a large α _R value) in the valence band of Tl₂O stemming from interfacial spin-orbit effects caused by PtS₂. The role of van der Waals binding on the orbital rearrangements has been studied using the electron localization function and atomic orbital projections, which explains in detail the electronic dispersion near the Fermi level. Moreover, we explain the distinct band structure alignment in momentum space but separation in real space of Tl₂O/PtS₂ heterostructure. Since two-dimensional (2D) Tl₂O still awaits experimental confirmation, we calculate, for the first time, the Raman spectra of pristine Tl₂O and the Tl₂O/PtS₂ heterostructure and discuss peak positions corresponding to vibrational modes of the atoms. These findings offer a promising avenue to explore spin physics for potential spintronics applications via 2D heterostructures.

Cubic Rashba Effect in the Surface Spin Structure of Rare-Earth Ternary Materials

Spin-orbit interaction and structure inversion asymmetry in combination with magnetic ordering is a promising route to novel materials with highly mobile spin-polarized carriers at the surface. Spin-resolved measurements of the photoemission current from the Si-terminated surface of the antiferromagnet TbRh_{2}Si_{2} and their analysis within an ab initio one-step theory unveil an unusual triple winding of the electron spin along the fourfold-symmetric constant energy contours of the surface states. A two-band k·p model is presented that yields the triple winding as a cubic Rashba effect. The curious in-plane spin-momentum locking is remarkably robust and remains intact across a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in spite of spin-orbit interaction on Rh atoms being considerably weaker than the out-of-plane exchange field due to the Tb 4f moments.

Topological electronic structure and Rashba effect in Bi thin layers: theoretical predictions and experiments

The goal of the present review is to cross-compare theoretical predictions with selected experimental results on bismuth thin films exhibiting topological properties and a strong Rashba effect. The theoretical prediction that a single free-standing Bi(1 1 1) bilayer is a topological insulator has triggered a large series of studies of ultrathin Bi(1 1 1) films grown on various substrates. Using selected examples we review theoretical predictions of atomic and electronic structure of Bi thin films exhibiting topological properties due to interaction with a substrate. We also survey experimental signatures of topological surface states and Rashba effect, as obtained mostly by angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

Non-trivial surface states of samarium hexaboride at the (111) surface

The peculiar metallic electronic states observed in the Kondo insulator, samarium hexaboride (SmB₆), has stimulated considerable attention among those studying non-trivial electronic phenomena. However, experimental studies of these states have led to controversial conclusions mainly due to the difficulty and inhomogeneity of the SmB₆ crystal surface. Here, we show the detailed electronic structure of SmB₆ with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the three-fold (111) surface where only two inequivalent time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIM) exist. We observe the metallic two-dimensional state was dispersed across the bulk Kondo gap. Its helical in-plane spin polarisation around the surface TRIM indicates that SmB₆ is topologically non-trivial, according to the topological classification theory for weakly correlated systems. Based on these results, we propose a simple picture of the controversial topological classification of SmB₆.

Samarium hexaboride has unusual electronic properties that have been suggested to arise from topological effects. Here the authors present spin-resolved ARPES measurements of the (111) surface and observe surface states that may give insight into the bulk topological properties.

Hosting of surface states in spin-orbit induced projected bulk band gaps of W(1 1 0) and Ir(1 1 1)

Spin-momentum locking of surface states has attracted great interest in recent years due to envisioned technological applications in the field of spintronics. Normal metal surfaces like W(1 1 0) and Ir(1 1 1) show surface states with energy dispersions and spin-polarization textures, which are reminiscent of topologically non-trivial surface states. In order to understand this phenomenon the connection of bulk and surface states has to be explored. Using time-of-flight momentum microscopy with soft x-ray excitation, we present a comprehensive analysis of the bulk bands of W and Ir. Surface states are determined by the same method with photon excitation in the vacuum ultraviolet region. The superposition of both spectral densities reveals the hosting of surface states within the gap structure of bulk bands projected on the surface Brillouin zone. Quantitative differences in the extension of experimental and theoretical local band gaps indicate an underestimation of electron correlation effects in theory.

Spin Polarization and Attosecond Time Delay in Photoemission from Spin Degenerate States of Solids

After photon absorption, electrons from a dispersive band of a solid require a finite time in the photoemission process before being photoemitted as free particles, in line with recent attosecond-resolved photoemission experiments. According to the Eisenbud-Wigner-Smith model, the time delay is due to a phase shift of different transitions that occur in the process. Such a phase shift is also at the origin of the angular dependent spin polarization of the photoelectron beam, observable in spin degenerate systems without angular momentum transfer by the incident photon. We propose a semiquantitative model which permits us to relate spin and time scales in photoemission from condensed matter targets and to better understand spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) experiments on spin degenerate systems. We also present the first experimental determination by SARPES of this time delay in a dispersive band, which is found to be greater than 26 as for electrons emitted from the sp-bulk band of the model system Cu(111).

Direct observation of spin-layer locking by local Rashba effect in monolayer semiconducting PtSe2 film

The generally accepted view that spin polarization in non-magnetic solids is induced by the asymmetry of the global crystal space group has limited the search for spintronics materials mainly to non-centrosymmetric materials. In recent times it has been suggested that spin polarization originates fundamentally from local atomic site asymmetries and therefore centrosymmetric materials may exhibit previously overlooked spin polarizations. Here, by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of helical spin texture in monolayer, centrosymmetric and semiconducting PtSe2 film without the characteristic spin splitting in conventional Rashba effect (R-1). First-principles calculations and effective analytical model analysis suggest local dipole induced Rashba effect (R-2) with spin-layer locking: opposite spins are degenerate in energy, while spatially separated in the top and bottom Se layers. These results not only enrich our understanding of the spin polarization physics but also may find applications in electrically tunable spintronics.

Decay length of surface-state wave functions on Bi(1 1 1)

We calculate the decay length in surface normal direction of the surface-state wave functions on a clean Bi(1 1 1) surface as a function of two-dimensional (2D) wave vector [Formula: see text] along the [Formula: see text] line. For this purpose, we perform a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation for semi-infinite Bi(1 1 1) by employing the surface embedded Green's function technique. The decay length of the two surface bands is found to be  ∼24 Bi bilayers at [Formula: see text], while it remains less than 5 Bi bilayers when [Formula: see text] is away from [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. At [Formula: see text], the degenerate surface bands are split from the upper boundary energy of the projected bulk valence bands only by 5 meV. In spite of this, the decay length of these bands at [Formula: see text] is less than 10 Bi bilayers due to the large effective mass (small curvature) of the highest valence band in the surface normal direction.

Quasi 2D electronic states with high spin-polarization in centrosymmetric MoS2 bulk crystals

Time reversal dictates that nonmagnetic, centrosymmetric crystals cannot be spin-polarized as a whole. However, it has been recently shown that the electronic structure in these crystals can in fact show regions of high spin-polarization, as long as it is probed locally in real and in reciprocal space. In this article we present the first observation of this type of compensated polarization in MoS2 bulk crystals. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we directly observed a spin-polarization of more than 65% for distinct valleys in the electronic band structure. By additionally evaluating the probing depth of our method, we find that these valence band states at the point in the Brillouin zone are close to fully polarized for the individual atomic trilayers of MoS2, which is confirmed by our density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we show that this spin-layer locking leads to the observation of highly spin-polarized bands in ARPES since these states are almost completely confined within two dimensions. Our findings prove that these highly desired properties of MoS2 can be accessed without thinning it down to the monolayer limit.

Multichannel Exchange-Scattering Spin Polarimetry

Electron spin plays important roles in determining the physical and chemical properties of matter. However, measurements of electron spin are of poor quality, impeding the development of material sciences, because the spin polarimeter has a low efficiency. Here, we show an imaging-type exchange-scattering spin polarimeter with 6786 channels and an 8.5×10^{-3} single channel efficiency. As a demonstration, the fine spin structure of the electronic states in bismuth (111) is investigated, for which strong Rashba-type spin splitting behavior is seen in both the bulk and surface states. This improvement paves the way to study novel spin related phenomena with unprecedented accuracy.

Spin-orbit coupling at surfaces and 2D materials

Spin-orbit interaction gives rise to a splitting of surface states via the Rashba effect, and in topological insulators it leads to the existence of topological surface states. The resulting k(//) momentum separation between states with the opposite spin underlies a wide range of new phenomena at surfaces and interfaces, such as spin transfer, spin accumulation, spin-to-charge current conversion, which are interesting for fundamental science and may become the basis for a breakthrough in the spintronic technology. The present review summarizes recent theoretical and experimental efforts to reveal the microscopic structure and mechanisms of spin-orbit driven phenomena with the focus on angle and spin-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy.

One-dimensional edge states with giant spin splitting in a bismuth thin film

To realize a one-dimensional (1D) system with strong spin-orbit coupling is a big challenge in modern physics, since the electrons in such a system are predicted to exhibit exotic properties unexpected from the 2D or 3D counterparts, while it was difficult to realize genuine physical properties inherent to the 1D system. We demonstrate the first experimental result that directly determines the purely 1D band structure by performing spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Bi islands on a silicon surface that contains a metallic 1D edge structure with unexpectedly large Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling suggestive of the nontopological nature. We have also found a sizable out-of-plane spin polarization of the 1D edge state, consistent with our first-principles band calculations. Our result provides a new platform to realize exotic quantum phenomena at the 1D edge of the strong spin-orbit-coupling systems.

Large spin splitting of metallic surface-state bands at adsorbate-modified gold/silicon surfaces

Finding appropriate systems with a large spin splitting of metallic surface-state band which can be fabricated on silicon using routine technique is an essential step in combining Rashba-effect based spintronics with silicon technology. We have found that originally poor structural and electronic properties of the Au/Si(111) √3 x √3 surface can be substantially improved by adsorbing small amounts of suitable species (e.g., Tl, In, Na, Cs). The resultant surfaces exhibit a highly-ordered atomic structure and spin-split metallic surface-state band with a momentum splitting of up to 0.052 Å(-1) and an energy splitting of up to 190 meV at the Fermi level. The family of adsorbate-modified Au/Si(111) √3 x √3 surfaces, on the one hand, is thought to be a fascinating playground for exploring spin-splitting effects in the metal monolayers on a semiconductor and, on the other hand, expands greatly the list of material systems prospective for spintronics applications.

Tunable Rashba effect in two-dimensional LaOBiS2 films: ultrathin candidates for spin field effect transistors

Rashba spin splitting is a two-dimensional (2D) relativistic effect closely related to spintronics. However, so far there is no pristine 2D material to exhibit enough Rashba splitting for the fabrication of ultrathin spintronic devices, such as spin field effect transistors (SFET). On the basis of first-principles calculations, we predict that the stable 2D LaOBiS2 with only 1 nm of thickness can produce remarkable Rashba spin splitting with a magnitude of 100 meV. Because the medium La2O2 layer produces a strong polar field and acts as a blocking barrier, two counter-helical Rashba spin polarizations are localized at different BiS2 layers. The Rashba parameter can be effectively tuned by the intrinsic strain, while the bandgap and the helical direction of spin states sensitively depends on the external electric field. We propose an advanced Datta-Das SFET model that consists of dual gates and 2D LaOBiS2 channels by selecting different Rashba states to achieve the on-off switch via electric fields.

Coherent phonon coupling to individual Bloch states in photoexcited bismuth

We investigate the temporal evolution of the electronic states at the bismuth (111) surface by means of time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The binding energy of bulklike bands oscillates with the frequency of the A(1g) phonon mode, whereas surface states are insensitive to the coherent displacement of the lattice. A strong dependence of the oscillation amplitude on the electronic wave vector is correctly reproduced by ab initio calculations of electron-phonon coupling. Besides these oscillations, all the electronic states also display a photoinduced shift towards higher binding energy whose dynamics follows the evolution of the electronic temperature.

Complex spin texture in the pure and Mn-doped topological insulator Bi2Te3

Topological insulators are characterized by the presence of spin-momentum-locked surface states with Dirac points that span the fundamental bulk band gap. We show by first-principles calculations that the surface state of the insulator Bi2Te3 survives upon moderate Mn doping of the surface layers. The spin texture of both undoped and Mn-doped Bi2Te3 is much more complicated than commonly believed, showing layer-dependent spin reversal and spin vortices.

Three-dimensional spin rotations at the Fermi surface of a strongly spin-orbit coupled surface system

The spin texture of the metallic two-dimensional electron system (sqrt[3]×sqrt[3])-Au/Ge(111) is revealed by fully three-dimensional spin-resolved photoemission, as well as by density functional calculations. The large hexagonal Fermi surface, generated by the Au atoms, shows a significant splitting due to spin-orbit interactions. The planar components of the spin exhibit a helical character, accompanied by a strong out-of-plane spin component with alternating signs along the six Fermi surface sections. Moreover, in-plane spin rotations toward a radial direction are observed close to the hexagon corners. Such a threefold-symmetric spin pattern is not described by the conventional Rashba model. Instead, it reveals an interplay with Dresselhaus-like spin-orbit effects as a result of the crystalline anisotropies.

Spin-orbit-induced photoelectron spin polarization in angle-resolved photoemission from both atomic and condensed matter targets

The existence of highly spin polarized photoelectrons emitted from non-magnetic solids as well as from unpolarized atoms and molecules has been found to be very common in many studies over the past 40 years. This so-called Fano effect is based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in the photoionization or the photoemission process. In a non-angle-resolved photoemission experiment, circularly polarized radiation has to be used to create spin polarized photoelectrons, while in angle-resolved photoemission even unpolarized or linearly polarized radiation is sufficient to get a high spin polarization. In past years the Rashba effect has become very important in the angle-resolved photoemission of solid surfaces, also with an observed high photoelectron spin polarization. It is the purpose of the present topical review to cross-compare the spin polarization experimentally found in angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy of condensed matter with that of free atoms, to compare it with the Rashba effect and topological insulators to describe the influence and the importance of the spin-orbit interaction and to show and disentangle the matrix element and phase shift effects therein.The relationship between the energy dispersion of these phase shifts and the emission delay of photoelectron emission in attosecond-resolved photoemission is also discussed. Furthermore the influence of chiral structures of the photo-effect target on the spin polarization, the interferences of different spin components in coherent superpositions in photoemission and a cross-comparison of spin polarization in photoemission from non-magnetic solids with XMCD on magnetic materials are presented; these are all based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in angle-resolved photoemission.

Can spin-polarized photoemission measure spin properties in condensed matter?

Photoemitted electrons move in a vacuum; their quantum state can be completely characterized in terms of energy, momentum and spin polarization by spin-polarized photoemission experiments. A review article in this issue by Heinzmann and Dil (2012 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 24 173001) considers whether the measured spin properties, i.e. the magnitude and direction of the spin polarization vector, can be traced back to the quantum state from which these electrons originate. The careful conclusion is that they can, which is highly relevant in view of the current interest in these experiments and their application to topological insulators, where the spin-orbit interaction produces spin-polarized surface states.

Tunable spin polarization in bismuth ultrathin film on Si(111)

We performed a spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of bismuth ultrathin film on Si(111) with various film thickness d. We found that the spin polarization of spin-split Rashba surface states near the Brillouin-zone boundary, which is high (0.7) at d = 40 BL (bilayers), is gradually reduced on decreasing d and almost vanishes at d = 8 BL. This finding provides a novel method to generate spin-polarized electrons with tunable spin-polarization.

Full characterization and optimization of a femtosecond ultraviolet laser source for time and angle-resolved photoemission on solid surfaces

A novel experimental apparatus for time and angle-resolved photoemission on solid surfaces is presented. A 6.28 eV laser source operating at 250 kHz repetition rate is obtained by frequency mixing in nonlinear beta barium borate crystals. This UV light source has a high photon flux of 10(13) photons/s with relatively low number of photons/pulse so that Fermi surface mapping over a wide region of the Brillouin zone is possible while mitigating space charge effects. The UV source has been fully characterized spatially, spectrally, and temporally. Its potential for time and angle-resolved photoemission is demonstrated through Fermi surface mapping and photoexcited electron dynamics in Bismuth. True femtosecond time resolution <65 fs is obtained while the energy resolution of 70 meV appears to be mainly limited by the laser bandwidth.

Electronic structure study of ultrathin Ag(111) films modified by a Si(111) substrate and √3 × √3-Ag2Bi surface

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments show that the electronic structure of a Ag(111) film grown on Si(111) is markedly perturbed by the formation of a √3 × √3-Ag(2)Bi Rashba-type surface alloy. Four spin-split surface states, with different band dispersions and energy contours, intercept and hybridize selectively with the sp-derived quantum well states of the Ag layer. Detailed two-dimensional band mapping of the system was carried out and constant energy contours at different energies result in hexagonal-, star- and flower-like distortions of the quantum well states as a result of various interactions. Further wavy-like modulations of the electronic structure of the film are found to originate from umklapp reflections of the Ag film states according to the surface periodicity.

Giant Rashba-type spin splitting in bulk BiTeI

There has been increasing interest in phenomena emerging from relativistic electrons in a solid, which have a potential impact on spintronics and magnetoelectrics. One example is the Rashba effect, which lifts the electron-spin degeneracy as a consequence of spin-orbit interaction under broken inversion symmetry. A high-energy-scale Rashba spin splitting is highly desirable for enhancing the coupling between electron spins and electricity relevant for spintronic functions. Here we describe the finding of a huge spin-orbit interaction effect in a polar semiconductor composed of heavy elements, BiTeI, where the bulk carriers are ruled by large Rashba-like spin splitting. The band splitting and its spin polarization obtained by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are well in accord with relativistic first-principles calculations, confirming that the spin splitting is indeed derived from bulk atomic configurations. Together with the feasibility of carrier-doping control, the giant-Rashba semiconductor BiTeI possesses excellent potential for application to various spin-dependent electronic functions.

Giant out-of-plane spin component and the asymmetry of spin polarization in surface Rashba states of bismuth thin film

We have performed high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of bismuth thin film on Si(111) to investigate the spin structure of surface states. Unlike the conventional Rashba splitting, the magnitude of the in-plane spin polarization is asymmetric between the two elongated surface hole pockets across the zone center. Moreover, we uncovered a giant out-of-plane spin polarization as large as the in-plane counterpart which switches the sign across the Γ-M line. We discuss the present finding in terms of the symmetry breaking and the many-body effects.
