Emergent Hyperuniformity in Periodically Driven Emulsions

Anomalous relaxation and hyperuniform fluctuations in center-of-mass conserving systems with broken time-reversal symmetry

We study the Oslo model, a paradigm for absorbing-phase transition, on a one-dimensional ring of L sites with a fixed global density ρ[over ¯]; we consider the system strictly above critical density ρ_{c}. Notably, microscopic dynamics conserve both mass and center of mass (CoM), but lack time-reversal symmetry. We show that, despite having highly constrained dynamics due to CoM conservation, the system exhibits diffusive relaxation away from criticality and superdiffusive relaxation near criticality. Furthermore, the CoM conservation severely restricts particle movement, causing the mobility-a transport coefficient analogous to the conductivity for charged particles-to vanish exactly. Indeed, the steady-state temporal growth of current fluctuation is qualitatively different from that observed in diffusive systems with a single conservation law. Remarkably, far from criticality where the relative density Δ=ρ[over ¯]-ρ_{c}≫ρ_{c}, the second cumulant, or the variance, 〈Q_{i}^{2}(T,Δ)〉_{c}, of current Q_{i} across the ith bond up to time T in the steady-state saturates as 〈Q_{i}^{2}〉_{c}≃Σ_{Q}^{2}(Δ)-constT^{-1/2}; near criticality, it grows subdiffusively as 〈Q_{i}^{2}〉_{c}∼T^{α}, with 0<α<1/2, and eventually saturates to Σ_{Q}^{2}(Δ). Interestingly, the asymptotic current fluctuation Σ_{Q}^{2}(Δ) is a nonmonotonic function of Δ: It diverges as Σ_{Q}^{2}(Δ)∼Δ^{2} for Δ≫ρ_{c} and Σ_{Q}^{2}(Δ)∼Δ^{-δ}, with δ>0, for Δ→0^{+}. Using a mass-conservation principle, we exactly determine the exponents δ=2(1-1/ν_{⊥})/ν_{⊥} and α=δ/zν_{⊥} via the correlation-length and dynamic exponents, ν_{⊥} and z, respectively. Finally, we show that in the steady state the self-diffusion coefficient D_{s}(ρ[over ¯]) of tagged particles is connected to activity through the relation D_{s}(ρ[over ¯])=a(ρ[over ¯])/ρ[over ¯].

Universal Hyperuniform Organization in Looped Leaf Vein Networks

The leaf vein network is a hierarchical vascular system that transports water and nutrients to the leaf cells. The thick primary veins form a branched network, while the secondary veins can develop closed loops forming a well-defined cellular structure. Through extensive analysis of a variety of distinct leaf species, we discover that the apparently disordered cellular structures of the secondary vein networks exhibit a universal hyperuniform organization and possess a hidden order on large scales. Disorder hyperuniform systems lack conventional long-range order, yet they completely suppress normalized infinite-wavelength density fluctuations like crystals. Specifically, we find that the distributions of the geometric centers associated with the vein network loops possess a vanishing static structure factor in the limit that the wave number k goes to 0, i.e., S(k)∼k^{α}, where α≈0.64±0.021, providing an example of class III hyperuniformity in biology. This hyperuniform organization leads to superior efficiency of diffusive transport, as evidenced by the much faster convergence of the time-dependent spreadability S(t) to its longtime asymptotic limit, compared to that of other uncorrelated or correlated disordered but nonhyperuniform organizations. Our results also have implications for the discovery and design of novel disordered network materials with optimal transport properties.

Interplay between an Absorbing Phase Transition and Synchronization in a Driven Granular System

Absorbing phase transitions (APTs) are widespread in nonequilibrium systems, spanning condensed matter, epidemics, earthquakes, ecology, and chemical reactions. APTs feature an absorbing state in which the system becomes entrapped, along with a transition, either continuous or discontinuous, to an active state. Understanding which physical mechanisms determine the order of these transitions represents a challenging open problem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Here, by numerical simulations and mean-field analysis, we show that a quasi-2D vibrofluidized granular system exhibits a novel form of APT. The absorbing phase is observed in the horizontal dynamics below a critical packing fraction, and can be continuous or discontinuous based on the emergent degree of synchronization in the vertical motion. Our results provide a direct representation of a feasible experimental scenario, showcasing a surprising interplay between dynamic phase transition and synchronization.

Vibrational properties of disordered stealthy hyperuniform 1D atomic chains

Disorder hyperuniformity is a recently discovered exotic state of many-body systems that possess a hidden order in between that of a perfect crystal and a completely disordered system. Recently, this novel disordered state has been observed in a number of quantum materials including amorphous 2D graphene and silica, which are endowed with unexpected electronic transport properties. Here, we numerically investigate 1D atomic chain models, including perfect crystalline, disordered stealthy hyperuniform (SHU) as well as randomly perturbed atom packing configurations to obtain a quantitative understanding of how the unique SHU disorder affects the vibrational properties of these low-dimensional materials. We find that the disordered SHU chains possess lower cohesive energies compared to the randomly perturbed chains, implying their potential reliability in experiments. Our inverse partition ratio (IPR) calculations indicate that the SHU chains can support fully delocalized states just like perfect crystalline chains over a wide range of frequencies, i.e.ω∈(0,100)cm-1, suggesting superior phonon transport behaviors within these frequencies, which was traditionally considered impossible in disordered systems. Interestingly, we observe the emergence of a group of highly localized states associated withω∼200cm-1, which is characterized by a significant peak in the IPR and a peak in phonon density of states at the corresponding frequency, and is potentially useful for decoupling electron and phonon degrees of freedom. These unique properties of disordered SHU chains have implications in the design and engineering of novel quantum materials for thermal and phononic applications.

Reversible, irreversible, and mixed regimes for periodically driven disks in random obstacle arrays

We examine an assembly of repulsive disks interacting with a random obstacle array under a periodic drive and find a transition from reversible to irreversible dynamics as a function of drive amplitude or disk density. At low densities and drives, the system rapidly forms a reversible state where the disks return to their exact positions at the end of each cycle. In contrast, at high amplitudes or high densities, the system enters an irreversible state where the disks exhibit normal diffusion. Between these two regimes, there can be an intermediate irreversible state where most of the system is reversible, but localized irreversible regions are present that are prevented from spreading through the system due to a screening effect from the obstacles. We also find states that we term "combinatorial reversible states" in which the disks return to their original positions after multiple driving cycles. In these states, individual disks exchange positions but form the same configurations during the subcycles of the larger reversible cycle.

Emergent Chirality and Hyperuniformity in an Active Mixture with Nonreciprocal Interactions

We investigate collective dynamics in a binary mixture of programmable robots in experiments and simulations. While robots of the same species align their motion direction, interaction between species is distinctly nonreciprocal: species A aligns with B and species B antialigns with A. This nonreciprocal interaction gives rise to the emergence of collective chiral motion that can be stabilized by limiting the robot angular speed to be below a threshold. Within the chiral phase, increasing the robot density or extending the range of local repulsive interactions can drive the system through an absorbing-active transition. At the transition point, the robots exhibit a remarkable capacity for self-organization, forming disordered hyperuniform states.

Correlated noise and critical dimensions

In equilibrium, the Mermin-Wagner theorem prohibits the continuous symmetry breaking for all dimensions d≤2. In this work, we discuss that this limitation can be circumvented in nonequilibrium systems driven by the spatiotemporally long-range anticorrelated noise. We first compute the lower and upper critical dimensions of the O(n) model driven by the spatiotemporally correlated noise by means of the dimensional analysis. Next we consider the spherical model, which corresponds to the large-n limit of the O(n) model and allows us to compute the critical dimensions and critical exponents, analytically. Both results suggest that the critical dimensions increase when the noise is positively correlated in space and time and decrease when anticorrelated. We also report that the spherical model with the correlated noise shows the hyperuniformity and giant number fluctuation even well above the critical point.

How does a hyperuniform fluid freeze?

All phase transitions can be categorized into two different types: continuous and discontinuous phase transitions. Discontinuous phase transitions are normally accompanied with significant structural changes, and nearly all of them have the kinetic pathway of nucleation and growth, if the system does not suffer from glassy dynamics. Here, in a system of barrier-controlled reactive particles, we find that the discontinuous freezing transition of a nonequilibrium hyperuniform fluid into an absorbing state does not have the kinetic pathway of nucleation and growth, and the transition is triggered by long-wavelength fluctuations. The transition rate decreases with increasing the system size, which suggests that the metastable hyperuniform fluid could be kinetically stable in an infinitely large system. This challenges the common understanding of metastability in discontinuous phase transitions. Moreover, we find that the "metastable yet kinetically stable" hyperuniform fluid features a scaling in the structure factor [Formula: see text] in 2D, which is the third dynamic hyperuniform state in addition to the critical hyperuniform state with [Formula: see text] and the nonequilibrium hyperuniform fluid with [Formula: see text].

Computational design of anisotropic stealthy hyperuniform composites with engineered directional scattering properties

Disordered hyperuniform materials are an emerging class of exotic amorphous states of matter that endow them with singular physical properties, including large isotropic photonic band gaps, superior resistance to fracture, and nearly optimal electrical and thermal transport properties, to name but a few. Here we generalize the Fourier-space-based numerical construction procedure for designing and generating digital realizations of isotropic disordered hyperuniform two-phase heterogeneous materials (i.e., composites) developed by Chen and Torquato [Acta Mater. 142, 152 (2018)1359-645410.1016/j.actamat.2017.09.053] to anisotropic microstructures with targeted spectral densities. Our generalized construction procedure explicitly incorporates the vector-dependent spectral density function χ[over ̃]_{_{V}}(k) of arbitrary form that is realizable. We demonstrate the utility of the procedure by generating a wide spectrum of anisotropic stealthy hyperuniform microstructures with χ[over ̃]_{_{V}}(k)=0 for k∈Ω, i.e., complete suppression of scattering in an "exclusion" region Ω around the origin in Fourier space. We show how different exclusion-region shapes with various discrete symmetries, including circular-disk, elliptical-disk, square, rectangular, butterfly-shaped, and lemniscate-shaped regions of varying size, affect the resulting statistically anisotropic microstructures as a function of the phase volume fraction. The latter two cases of Ω lead to directionally hyperuniform composites, which are stealthy hyperuniform only along certain directions and are nonhyperuniform along others. We find that while the circular-disk exclusion regions give rise to isotropic hyperuniform composite microstructures, the directional hyperuniform behaviors imposed by the shape asymmetry (or anisotropy) of certain exclusion regions give rise to distinct anisotropic structures and degree of uniformity in the distribution of the phases on intermediate and large length scales along different directions. Moreover, while the anisotropic exclusion regions impose strong constraints on the global symmetry of the resulting media, they can still possess structures at a local level that are nearly isotropic. Both the isotropic and anisotropic hyperuniform microstructures associated with the elliptical-disk, square, and rectangular Ω possess phase-inversion symmetry over certain range of volume fractions and a percolation threshold ϕ_{c}≈0.5. On the other hand, the directionally hyperuniform microstructures associated with the butterfly-shaped and lemniscate-shaped Ω do not possess phase-inversion symmetry and percolate along certain directions at much lower volume fractions. We also apply our general procedure to construct stealthy nonhyperuniform systems. Our construction algorithm enables one to control the statistical anisotropy of composite microstructures via the shape, size, and symmetries of Ω, which is crucial to engineering directional optical, transport, and mechanical properties of two-phase composite media.

Two-Dimensional Crystals far from Equilibrium

When driven by nonequilibrium fluctuations, particle systems may display phase transitions and physical behavior with no equilibrium counterpart. We study a two-dimensional particle model initially proposed to describe driven non-Brownian suspensions undergoing nonequilibrium absorbing phase transitions. We show that when the transition occurs at large density, the dynamics produces long-range crystalline order. In the ordered phase, long-range translational order is observed because equipartition of energy is lacking, phonons are suppressed, and density fluctuations are hyperuniform. Our study offers an explicit microscopic model where nonequilibrium violations of the Mermin-Wagner theorem stabilize crystalline order in two dimensions.

Hyperuniform jammed sphere packings have anomalous material properties

A spatial distribution is hyperuniform if it has local density fluctuations that vanish in the limit of long length scales. Hyperuniformity is a well known property of both crystals and quasicrystals. Of recent interest, however, is disordered hyperuniformity: the presence of hyperuniform scaling without long-range configurational order. Jammed granular packings have been proposed as an example of disordered hyperuniformity, but recent numerical investigation has revealed that many jammed systems instead exhibit a complex set of distinct behaviors at long, emergent length scales. We use the Voronoi tessellation as a tool to define a set of rescaling transformations that can impose hyperuniformity on an arbitrary weighted point process, and show that these transformations can be used in simulations to iteratively generate hyperuniform, mechanically stable packings of athermal soft spheres. These hyperuniform jammed packings display atypical mechanical properties, particularly in the low-frequency phononic excitations, which exhibit an isolated band of highly collective modes and a band gap around zero frequency.

Hyperuniform Active Chiral Fluids with Tunable Internal Structure

Large density fluctuations observed in active systems and hyperuniformity are two seemingly incompatible phenomena. However, the formation of hyperuniform states has been recently predicted in nonequilibrium fluids formed by chiral particles performing circular motion with the same handedness. Here we report evidence of hyperuniformity realized in a chiral active fluid comprised of pear-shaped Quincke rollers of arbitrary handedness. We show that hyperuniformity and large density fluctuations, triggered by dynamic clustering, coexist in this system at different length scales. The system loses its hyperuniformity as the curvature of particles' motion increases, transforming them into localized spinners. Our results experimentally demonstrate a novel hyperuniform active fluid and provide new insights into an interplay between chirality, activity, and hyperuniformity.

Reversible to Irreversible Transitions for Cyclically Driven Particles on Periodic Obstacle Arrays

We examine the collective dynamics of disks moving through a square array of obstacles under cyclic square wave driving. Below a critical density we find that system organizes into a reversible state in which the disks return to the same positions at the end of every drive cycle. Above this density, the dynamics are irreversible and the disks do not return to the same positions after each cycle. The critical density depends strongly on the angle θ between the driving direction and a symmetry axis of the obstacle array, with the highest critical densities appearing at commensurate angles such as θ=0{degree sign} and θ=45{degree sign} and the lowest critical densities falling at θ=arctan(0.618), the inverse of the golden ratio, where the flow is the most frustrated. As the density increases, the number of cycles required to reach a reversible state grows as a power law with an exponent near ν=1.36, similar to what is found in periodically driven colloidal and superconducting vortex systems.

Absorbing phase transitions in systems with mediated interactions

Experiments of periodically sheared colloidal suspensions or soft amorphous solids display a transition from reversible to irreversible particle motion that, when analyzed stroboscopically in time, is interpreted as an absorbing phase transition with infinitely many absorbing states. In these systems, interactions mediated by hydrodynamics or elasticity are present, causing passive regions to be affected by nearby active ones. We show that mediated interactions induce a universality class of absorbing phase transitions distinct from conserved directed percolation, and we obtain the corresponding critical exponents. We do so with large-scale numerical simulations of a minimal model for the stroboscopic dynamics of sheared soft materials and we derive the minimal field theoretical description.

Hyperuniformity and phase enrichment in vortex and rotor assemblies

Ensembles of particles rotating in a two-dimensional fluid can exhibit chaotic dynamics yet develop signatures of hidden order. Such rotors are found in the natural world spanning vastly disparate length scales — from the rotor proteins in cellular membranes to models of atmospheric dynamics. Here we show that an initially random distribution of either driven rotors in a viscous membrane, or ideal vortices with minute perturbations, spontaneously self assemble into a distinct arrangement. Despite arising from drastically different physics, these systems share a Hamiltonian structure that sets geometrical conservation laws resulting in prominent structural states. We find that the rotationally invariant interactions isotropically suppress long-wavelength fluctuations — a hallmark of a disordered hyperuniform material. With increasing area fraction, the system orders into a hexagonal lattice. In mixtures of two co-rotating populations, the stronger population will gain order from the other and both will become phase enriched. Finally, we show that classical 2D point vortex systems arise as exact limits of the experimentally accessible microscopic membrane rotors, yielding a new system through which to study topological defects.

Rotor-like dynamics is observed in many natural systems, from the rotor proteins in cellular membranes to atmospheric models. Here, the authors uncover geometrical conservation laws that limit distribution of driven rotors in a membrane or a soap film and allow to predict their structural states.

Effective Industry-Academia Collaboration Driving Polymer Innovation

Polymer science is one of the few fundamental research fields where the results can be transferred into real-life products almost immediately. Industries need collaborations with the best researchers (universities or national laboratories) to elevate the field and favor the development of new materials, which will boost the chemical and materials business economy and ensure that innovative and sustainable polymer products are constantly being brought to the market. The mechanisms to ensure a seamless and fruitful collaboration are numerous, but few approaches really manage to incorporate the full range of polymer research from a molecular understanding to a macroscopic control of properties. We review some of the main components of standard industry-academia collaborations and propose to develop polymer open centers that put the business development objective as the starting point of the collaboration and allow those to gather and focus on different scientific fields toward a common objective.

Towards Glasses with Permanent Stability

Unlike crystals, glasses age or devitrify over time, reflecting their nonequilibrium nature. This lack of stability is a serious issue in many industrial applications. Here, we show by numerical simulations that the devitrification of quasi-hard-sphere glasses is prevented by suppressing volume-fraction inhomogeneities. A monodisperse glass known to devitrify with "avalanchelike" intermittent dynamics is subjected to small iterative adjustments to particle sizes to make the local volume fractions spatially uniform. We find that this entirely prevents structural relaxation and devitrification over aging time scales, even in the presence of crystallites. There is a dramatic homogenization in the number of load-bearing nearest neighbors each particle has, indicating that ultrastable glasses may be formed via "mechanical homogenization." Our finding provides a physical principle for glass stabilization and opens a novel route to the formation of mechanically stabilized glasses.

Geometrical properties of mechanically annealed systems near the jamming transition

Geometrical properties of two-dimensional mixtures near the jamming transition point are numerically investigated using harmonic particles under mechanical training. The configurations generated by the quasi-static compression and oscillatory shear deformations exhibit anomalous suppression of the density fluctuations, known as hyperuniformity, below and above the jamming transition. For the jammed system trained by compression above the transition point, the hyperuniformity exponent increases. For the system below the transition point under oscillatory shear, the hyperuniformity exponent also increases until the shear amplitude reaches the threshold value. The threshold value matches with the transition point from the point-reversible phase where the particles experience no collision to the loop-reversible phase where the particles' displacements are non-affine during a shear cycle before coming back to an original position. The results demonstrated in this paper are explained in terms of neither of universal criticality of the jamming transition nor the nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Critical behavior of density-driven and shear-driven reversible-irreversible transitions in cyclically sheared vortices

Random assemblies of particles subjected to cyclic shear undergo a reversible–irreversible transition (RIT) with increasing a shear amplitude d or particle density n, while the latter type of RIT has not been verified experimentally. Here, we measure the time-dependent velocity of cyclically sheared vortices and observe the critical behavior of RIT driven by vortex density B as well as d. Critical pore radius and transport properties of disordered hard- and overlapping-sphere models

Transport properties of porous media are intimately linked to their pore-space microstructures. We quantify geometrical and topological descriptors of the pore space of certain disordered and ordered distributions of spheres, including pore-size functions and the critical pore radius δ_{c}. We focus on models of porous media derived from maximally random jammed sphere packings, overlapping spheres, equilibrium hard spheres, quantizer sphere packings, and crystalline sphere packings. For precise estimates of the percolation thresholds, we use a strict relation of the void percolation around sphere configurations to weighted bond percolation on the corresponding Voronoi networks. We use the Newman-Ziff algorithm to determine the percolation threshold using universal properties of the cluster size distribution. The critical pore radius δ_{c} is often used as the key characteristic length scale that determines the fluid permeability k. A recent study [Torquato, Adv. Wat. Resour. 140, 103565 (2020)10.1016/j.advwatres.2020.103565] suggested for porous media with a well-connected pore space an alternative estimate of k based on the second moment of the pore size 〈δ^{2}〉, which is easier to determine than δ_{c}. Here, we compare δ_{c} to the second moment of the pore size 〈δ^{2}〉, and indeed confirm that, for all porosities and all models considered, δ_{c}^{2} is to a good approximation proportional to 〈δ^{2}〉. However, unlike 〈δ^{2}〉, the permeability estimate based on δ_{c}^{2} does not predict the correct ranking of k for our models. Thus, we confirm 〈δ^{2}〉 to be a promising candidate for convenient and reliable estimates of the fluid permeability for porous media with a well-connected pore space. Moreover, we compare the fluid permeability of our models with varying degrees of order, as measured by the τ order metric. We find that (effectively) hyperuniform models tend to have lower values of k than their nonhyperuniform counterparts. Our findings could facilitate the design of porous media with desirable transport properties via targeted pore statistics.

Scalable Disordered Hyperuniform Architectures via Nanoimprint Lithography of Metal Oxides

Fabrication and scaling of disordered hyperuniform materials remain hampered by the difficulties in controlling the spontaneous phenomena leading to this novel kind of exotic arrangement of objects. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid top-down/bottom-up approach based on sol-gel dip-coating and nanoimprint lithography for the faithful reproduction of disordered hyperuniform metasurfaces in metal oxides. Nano- to microstructures made of silica and titania can be directly printed over several cm² on glass and on silicon substrates. First, we describe the polymer mold fabrication starting from a hard master obtained via spontaneous solid-state dewetting of SiGe and Ge thin layers on SiO₂. Then, we assess the effective disordered hyperuniform character of master and replica and the role of the thickness of the sol-gel layer on the metal oxide replicas and on the presence of a residual layer underneath. Finally, as a potential application, we show the antireflective character of titania structures on silicon. Our results are relevant for the realistic implementation over large scales of disordered hyperuniform nano- and microarchitectures made of metal oxides, thus opening their exploitation in the framework of wet chemical assembly.

Dynamic evolution of hyperuniformity in a driven dissipative colloidal system

Hyperuniformity is evolving to become a unifying concept that can help classify and characterize equilibrium and nonequilibrium states of matter. Therefore, understanding the extent of hyperuniformity in dissipative systems is critical. Here, we study the dynamic evolution of hyperuniformity in a driven dissipative colloidal system. We experimentally show and numerically verify that the hyperuniformity of a colloidal crystal is robust against various lattice imperfections and environmental perturbations. This robustness even manifests during crystal disassembly as the system switches between strong (class I), logarithmic (class II), weak (class III), and non-hyperuniform states. To aid analyses, we developed a comprehensive computational toolbox, enabling real-time characterization of hyperuniformity in real- and reciprocal-spaces together with the evolution of several order metric features, and measurements showing the effect of external perturbations on the spatiotemporal distribution of the particles. Our findings provide a new framework to understand the basic principles that drive a dissipative system to a hyperuniform state.

Barrier-controlled nonequilibrium criticality in reactive particle systems

Nonequilibrium critical phenomena generally exist in many dynamic systems, like chemical reactions and some driven-dissipative reactive particle systems. Here, by using computer simulation and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate the crucial role of the activation barrier on the criticality of dynamic phase transitions in a minimal reactive hard-sphere model. We find that at zero thermal noise, with increasing the activation barrier, the type of transition changes from a continuous conserved directed percolation into a discontinuous dynamic transition by crossing a tricritical point. A mean-field theory combined with field simulation is proposed to explain this phenomenon. The possibility of Ising-type criticality in the nonequilibrium system at finite thermal noise is also discussed.

Quantifying the long-range structure of foams and other cellular patterns with hyperuniformity disorder length spectroscopy

We investigate the local and long-range structure of several space-filling cellular patterns: bubbles in a quasi-two-dimensional foam, and Voronoi constructions made around points that are uncorrelated (Poisson patterns), low discrepancy (Halton patterns), and displaced from a lattice by Gaussian noise (Einstein patterns). We study local structure with distributions of quantities including cell areas and side numbers. The former is the widest for the bubbles making foams the most locally disordered, while the latter show no major differences between the cellular patterns. To study long-range structure, we begin by representing the cellular systems as patterns of points, both unweighted and weighted by cell area. For this, foams are represented by their bubble centroids and the Voronoi constructions are represented by the centroids as well as the points from which they are created. Long-range structure is then quantified in two ways: by the spectral density, and by a real-space analog where the variance of density fluctuations for a set of measuring windows of diameter D is made more intuitive by conversion to the distance h(D) from the window boundary where these fluctuations effectively occur. The unweighted bubble centroids have h(D) that collapses for the different ages of the foam with random Poissonian fluctuations at long distances. The area-weighted bubble centroids and area-weighted Voronoi points all have constant h(D)=h_{e} for large D; the bubble centroids have the smallest value h_{e}=0.084sqrt[〈a〉], meaning they are the most uniform. Area-weighted Voronoi centroids exhibit collapse of h(D) to the same constant h_{e}=0.084sqrt[〈a〉] as for the bubble centroids. A similar analysis is performed on the edges of the cells and the spectra of h(D) for the foam edges show h(D)∼D^{1-ε} where ε=0.30±0.15.

Circular swimming motility and disordered hyperuniform state in an algae system

Active matter comprises individually driven units that convert locally stored energy into mechanical motion. Interactions between driven units lead to a variety of nonequilibrium collective phenomena in active matter. One of such phenomena is anomalously large density fluctuations, which have been observed in both experiments and theories. Here we show that, on the contrary, density fluctuations in active matter can also be greatly suppressed. Our experiments are carried out with marine algae ([Formula: see text]), which swim in circles at the air-liquid interfaces with two different eukaryotic flagella. Cell swimming generates fluid flow that leads to effective repulsions between cells in the far field. The long-range nature of such repulsive interactions suppresses density fluctuations and generates disordered hyperuniform states under a wide range of density conditions. Emergence of hyperuniformity and associated scaling exponent are quantitatively reproduced in a numerical model whose main ingredients are effective hydrodynamic interactions and uncorrelated random cell motion. Our results demonstrate the existence of disordered hyperuniform states in active matter and suggest the possibility of using hydrodynamic flow for self-assembly in active matter.

Stone-Wales defects preserve hyperuniformity in amorphous two-dimensional networks

Disordered hyperuniformity (DHU) is a recently discovered novel state of many-body systems that possesses vanishing normalized infinite-wavelength density fluctuations similar to a perfect crystal and an amorphous structure like a liquid or glass. Here, we discover a hyperuniformity-preserving topological transformation in two-dimensional (2D) network structures that involves continuous introduction of Stone-Wales (SW) defects. Specifically, the static structure factor [Formula: see text] of the resulting defected networks possesses the scaling [Formula: see text] for small wave number k, where [Formula: see text] monotonically decreases as the SW defect concentration p increases, reaches [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text], and remains almost flat beyond this p. Our findings have important implications for amorphous 2D materials since the SW defects are well known to capture the salient feature of disorder in these materials. Verified by recently synthesized single-layer amorphous graphene, our network models reveal unique electronic transport mechanisms and mechanical behaviors associated with distinct classes of disorder in 2D materials.

Non-Gaussian tail in the force distribution: a hallmark of correlated disorder in the host media of elastic objects

Inferring the nature of disorder in the media where elastic objects are nucleated is of crucial importance for many applications but remains a challenging basic-science problem. Here we propose a method to discern whether weak-point or strong-correlated disorder dominates based on characterizing the distribution of the interaction forces between objects mapped in large fields-of-view. We illustrate our proposal with the case-study system of vortex structures nucleated in type-II superconductors with different pinning landscapes. Interaction force distributions are computed from individual vortex positions imaged in thousands-vortices fields-of-view in a two-orders-of-magnitude-wide vortex-density range. Vortex structures nucleated in point-disordered media present Gaussian distributions of the interaction force components. In contrast, if the media have dilute and randomly-distributed correlated disorder, these distributions present non-Gaussian algebraically-decaying tails for large force magnitudes. We propose that detecting this deviation from the Gaussian behavior is a fingerprint of strong disorder, in our case originated from a dilute distribution of correlated pinning centers.

Hyperuniform Structures Formed by Shearing Colloidal Suspensions

In periodically sheared suspensions there is a dynamical phase transition, characterized by a critical strain amplitude γ_{c}, between an absorbing state where particle trajectories are reversible and an active state where trajectories are chaotic and diffusive. Repulsive nonhydrodynamic interactions between "colliding" particles' surfaces have been proposed as a source of this broken time reversal symmetry. A simple toy model called random organization qualitatively reproduces the dynamical features of this transition. Random organization and other absorbing state models exhibit hyperuniformity, a strong suppression of density fluctuations on long length scales quantified by a structure factor S(q→0)∼q^{α} with α>0, at criticality. Here we show experimentally that the particles in periodically sheared suspensions organize into structures with anisotropic short-range order but isotropic, long-range hyperuniform order when oscillatory shear amplitudes approach γ_{c}.

Minimal statistical-mechanical model for multihyperuniform patterns in avian retina

Birds are known for their extremely acute sense of vision. The very peculiar structural distribution of five different types of cones in the retina underlies this exquisite ability to sample light. It was recently found that each cone population as well as their total population display a disordered pattern in which long-wavelength density fluctuations vanish [Jiao et al., Phys. Rev. E 89, 022721 (2014)PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.89.022721]. This property, known as hyperuniformity, is also present in perfect crystals. In situations like the avian retina in which both the global structure and that of each component display hyperuniformity, the system is said to be multihyperuniform. In this work, we aim at devising a minimal statistical-mechanical model that can reproduce the main features of the spatial distribution of photoreceptors in avian retina, namely the presence of disorder, multihyperuniformity, and local heterocoordination. This last feature is key to avoiding local clustering of the same type of photoreceptors, an undesirable feature for the efficient sampling of light. For this purpose, we formulate a minimal statistical-mechanical model that definitively exhibits the required structural properties: an equimolar three-component mixture (one component to sample each primary color: red, green, and blue) of nonadditive hard disks to which a long-range logarithmic repulsion is added between like particles. Interestingly, a Voronoi analysis of our idealized system of photoreceptors shows that the space-filling Voronoi polygons display a rather uniform area distribution, symmetrically centered around that of a regular lattice, a structural property also found in human retina. Disordered multihyperuniformity offers an alternative to generate photoreceptor patterns with minimal long-range concentration and density fluctuations. This is the key to overcoming the difficulties in devising an efficient visual system in which crystal-like order is absent.

Design of nearly perfect hyperuniform polymeric materials

Disordered hyperuniform materials are exotic amorphous systems that simultaneously exhibit anomalous suppression of long-range density fluctuations, comparable in amplitude to that of crystals and quasi-crystalline materials, while lacking the translational order characteristic of simple liquids. We establish a framework to quantitatively predict the emergence of hyperuniformity in polymeric materials by considering the distribution of localized polymer subregions, instead of considering the whole material. We demonstrate that this highly tunable approach results in arbitrarily small long-range density fluctuations in the liquid state. Our simulations also indicate that long-ranged density fluctuation of the whole polymeric material is remarkably insensitive to molecular topology (linear chain, unknotted ring, star, and bottlebrush) and depends on temperature in an apparently near universal fashion. Our findings open the way for the creation of nearly perfect hyperuniform polymeric materials.

Optimized Large Hyperuniform Binary Colloidal Suspensions in Two Dimensions

The creation of disordered hyperuniform materials with extraordinary optical properties (e.g., large complete photonic band gaps) requires a capacity to synthesize large samples that are effectively hyperuniform down to the nanoscale. Motivated by this challenge, we propose a feasible equilibrium fabrication protocol using binary paramagnetic colloidal particles confined in a 2D plane. The strong and long-ranged dipolar interaction induced by a tunable magnetic field is free from screening effects that attenuate long-ranged electrostatic interactions in charged colloidal systems. Specifically, we numerically find a family of optimal size ratios that makes the two-phase system effectively hyperuniform. We show that hyperuniformity is a general consequence of low isothermal compressibilities, which makes our protocol suitable to treat more general systems with other long-ranged interactions, dimensionalities, and/or polydispersity. Our methodology paves the way to synthesize large photonic hyperuniform materials that function in the visible to infrared range and hence may accelerate the discovery of novel photonic materials.

Disordered hyperuniformity in two-dimensional amorphous silica

Disordered hyperuniformity (DHU) is a recently proposed new state of matter, which has been observed in a variety of classical and quantum many-body systems. DHU systems are characterized by vanishing infinite-wavelength normalized density fluctuations and are endowed with unique novel physical properties. Here, we report the discovery of disordered hyperuniformity in atomic-scale two-dimensional materials, i.e., amorphous silica composed of a single layer of atoms, based on spectral-density analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Moreover, we show via large-scale density functional theory calculations that DHU leads to almost complete closure of the electronic bandgap compared to the crystalline counterpart, making the material effectively a metal. This is in contrast to the conventional wisdom that disorder generally diminishes electronic transport and is due to the unique electron wave localization induced by the topological defects in the DHU state.

Absorbing-State Transitions in Granular Materials Close to Jamming

We consider a model for driven particulate matter in which absorbing states can be reached both by particle isolation and by particle caging. The model predicts a nonequilibrium phase diagram in which analogs of hydrodynamic and elastic reversibility emerge at low and high volume fractions respectively, partially separated by a diffusive, nonabsorbing region. We thus find a single phase boundary that spans the onset of chaos in sheared suspensions to the onset of yielding in jammed packings. This boundary has the properties of a nonequilibrium second order phase transition, leading us to write a Manna-like mean field description that captures the model predictions. Dependent on contact details, jamming marks either a direct transition between the two absorbing states, or occurs within the diffusive region.

Experimental signatures of a nonequilibrium phase transition near the crossover point of a Langmuir monolayer

We investigate the response of the two-dimensional (2D) continuous non-particulate film of surfactant sorbitan tristearate confined at the air-water interface under oscillatory shear deformation. The time dependence of various rheological parameters show critical-like behavior at a value of strain amplitude close to the crossover point of elastic ([Formula: see text]) and viscous ([Formula: see text]) shear moduli. Imposing oscillatory shear of different strain amplitudes ([Formula: see text]) above and below the crossover strain amplitude ([Formula: see text]) over a large number of cycles, we quantify the temporal dependence of interfacial viscous modulus, phase angle ([Formula: see text]) as well as higher harmonic components of stress. The number of shear cycles ([Formula: see text]) required for these quantities to reach the steady state value diverges near [Formula: see text]. The steady state values of the third harmonic ([Formula: see text]) show order parameter like behavior indicating the importance of higher order harmonics near the nonequilibrium transition. We further show that the energy dissipation per cycle per unit volume has a marked change near [Formula: see text], consistent with continuum level nonequilibrium shear-transformation-zone model of amorphous viscoplasticity.

Hydrodynamics of random-organizing hyperuniform fluids

Disordered hyperuniform structures are locally random while uniform like crystals at large length scales. Recently, an exotic hyperuniform fluid state was found in several nonequilibrium systems, while the underlying physics remains unknown. In this work, we propose a nonequilibrium (driven-dissipative) hard-sphere model and formulate a hydrodynamic theory based on Navier-Stokes equations to uncover the general mechanism of the fluidic hyperuniformity (HU). At a fixed density, this model system undergoes a smooth transition from an absorbing state to an active hyperuniform fluid and then, to the equilibrium fluid by changing the dissipation strength. We study the criticality of the absorbing-phase transition. We find that the origin of fluidic HU can be understood as the damping of a stochastic harmonic oscillator in q space, which indicates that the suppressed long-wavelength density fluctuation in the hyperuniform fluid can exhibit as either acoustic (resonance) mode or diffusive (overdamped) mode. Importantly, our theory reveals that the damping dissipation and active reciprocal interaction (driving) are the two ingredients for fluidic HU. Based on this principle, we further demonstrate how to realize the fluidic HU in an experimentally accessible active spinner system and discuss the possible realization in other systems.

Hyperuniformity on spherical surfaces

We study and characterize local density fluctuations of ordered and disordered hyperuniform point distributions on spherical surfaces. In spite of the extensive literature on disordered hyperuniform systems in Euclidean geometries, to date few works have dealt with the problem of hyperuniformity in curved spaces. Indeed, some systems that display disordered hyperuniformity, like the spatial distribution of photoreceptors in avian retina, actually occur on curved surfaces. Here we will focus on the local particle number variance and its dependence on the size of the sampling window (which we take to be a spherical cap) for regular and uniform point distributions, as well as for equilibrium configurations of fluid particles interacting through Lennard-Jones, dipole-dipole, and charge-charge potentials. We show that the scaling of the local number variance as a function of the window size enables one to characterize hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform point patterns also on spherical surfaces.

Hyperuniform states generated by a critical friction field

Hyperuniform states are an efficient way to fill up space for disordered systems. In these states the particle distribution is disordered at the short scale but becomes increasingly uniform when looked at large scales. Hyperuniformity appears in several systems, in static or quasistatic regimes, as well as close to transitions to absorbing states. Here, we show that a vibrated granular layer, at the critical point of the liquid-to-solid transition, displays dynamic hyperuniformity. Prior to the transition, patches of the solid phase form, with length scales and mean lifetimes that diverge critically at the transition point. When reducing the wave number, density fluctuations encounter increasingly more patches that block their propagation, resulting in a static structure factor that tends to zero for small wave numbers at the critical point, which is a signature of hyperuniformity. A simple model demonstrates that this coupling of a density field to a highly fluctuating scalar friction field gives rise to dynamic hyperuniform states. Finally, we show that the structure factor detects better the emergence of hyperuniformity, compared to the particle number variance.

Disordered hyperuniform obstacles enhance sorting of dynamically chiral microswimmers

Disordered hyperuniformity, a brand new type of arrangement with novel physical properties, provides various practical applications in extensive fields. To highlight the great potential of applying disordered hyperuniformity to active systems, a practical example is reported here by an optimal sorting of dynamically chiral microswimmers in disordered hyperuniform obstacle environments in comparison with regular or disordered ones. This optimal chirality sorting stems from a competition between advantageous microswimmer-obstacle collisions and disadvantageous trapping of microswimmers by obstacles. Based on this mechanism, optimal chirality sorting is also realized by tuning other parameters including the number density of obstacles, the strength of driven force and the noise intensity. Our findings may open a new perspective on both theoretical and experimental investigations for further applications of disordered hyperuniformity in active systems.

Can a Large Packing be Assembled from Smaller Ones?

We consider zero temperature packings of soft spheres that undergo a jamming to unjamming transition as a function of packing fraction. We compare differences in the structure, as measured from the contact statistics, of a finite subsystem of a large packing to a whole packing with periodic boundaries of an equivalent size and pressure. We find that the fluctuations of the ensemble of whole packings are smaller than those of the ensemble of subsystems. Convergence of these two quantities appears to occur at very large systems, which are usually not attainable in numerical simulations. Finding differences between packings in two dimensions and three dimensions, we also consider four dimensions and mean-field models, and find that they show similar system size dependence. Mean-field critical exponents appear to be consistent with the 3D and 4D packings, suggesting they are above the upper critical dimension. We also find that the convergence as a function of system size to the thermodynamic limit is characterized by two different length scales. We argue that this is the result of the system being above the upper critical dimension.

Methodology to construct large realizations of perfectly hyperuniform disordered packings

Disordered hyperuniform packings (or dispersions) are unusual amorphous two-phase materials that are endowed with exotic physical properties. Such hyperuniform systems are characterized by an anomalous suppression of volume-fraction fluctuations at infinitely long-wavelengths, compared to ordinary disordered materials. While there has been growing interest in such singular states of amorphous matter, a major obstacle has been an inability to produce large samples that are perfectly hyperuniform due to practical limitations of conventional numerical and experimental methods. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a general theoretical methodology to construct perfectly hyperuniform packings in d-dimensional Euclidean space R^{d}. Specifically, beginning with an initial general tessellation of space by disjoint cells that meets a "bounded-cell" condition, hard particles of general shape are placed inside each cell such that the local-cell particle packing fractions are identical to the global packing fraction. We prove that the constructed packings with a polydispersity in size are perfectly hyperuniform in the infinite-sample-size limit, regardless of particle shapes, positions, and numbers per cell. We use this theoretical formulation to devise an efficient and tunable algorithm to generate extremely large realizations of such packings. We employ two distinct initial tessellations: Voronoi as well as sphere tessellations. Beginning with Voronoi tessellations, we show that our algorithm can remarkably convert extremely large nonhyperuniform packings into hyperuniform ones in R^{2} and R^{3}. Implementing our theoretical methodology on sphere tessellations, we establish the hyperuniformity of the classical Hashin-Shtrikman multiscale coated-spheres structures, which are known to be two-phase media microstructures that possess optimal effective transport and elastic properties. A consequence of our work is a rigorous demonstration that packings that have identical tessellations can either be nonhyperuniform or hyperuniform by simply tuning local characteristics. It is noteworthy that our computationally designed hyperuniform two-phase systems can easily be fabricated via state-of-the-art methods, such as 2D photolithographic and 3D printing technologies. In addition, the tunability of our methodology offers a route for the discovery of novel disordered hyperuniform two-phase materials.

Hyperuniformity of generalized random organization models

Studies of random organization models of monodisperse (i.e., identical) spherical particles have shown that a hyperuniform state is achievable when the system goes through an absorbing phase transition to a critical state. Here we investigate to what extent hyperuniformity is preserved when the model is generalized to particles with a size distribution and/or nonspherical shapes. We begin by examining binary disks in two dimensions and demonstrate that their critical states are hyperuniform as two-phase media, but not hyperuniform nor multihyperuniform as point patterns formed by the particle centroids. We further confirm the generality of our findings by studying particles with a continuous size distribution. Finally, to study the effect of rotational degrees of freedom, we extend our model to noncircular particles, namely, hard rectangles with various aspect ratios, including the hard-needle limit. Although these systems exhibit only short-range orientational order, hyperuniformity is still preserved. Our analysis reveals that the redistribution of the "mass" of the particles rather than the particle centroids is central to this dynamical process. The consideration of the "active volume fraction" of generalized random organization models may help to resolve which universality class they belong to and hence may lead to a deeper theoretical understanding of absorbing-state models. Our results suggest that general particle systems subject to random organization can be a robust way to fabricate a wide class of hyperuniform states of matter by tuning the structures via different particle-size and -shape distributions. This in turn potentially enables the creation of multifunctional hyperuniform materials with desirable optical, transport, and mechanical properties.

Universal hidden order in amorphous cellular geometries

Partitioning space into cells with certain extreme geometrical properties is a central problem in many fields of science and technology. Here we investigate the Quantizer problem, defined as the optimisation of the moment of inertia of Voronoi cells, i.e., similarly-sized ‘sphere-like’ polyhedra that tile space are preferred. We employ Lloyd’s centroidal Voronoi diagram algorithm to solve this problem and find that it converges to disordered states associated with deep local minima. These states are universal in the sense that their structure factors are characterised by a complete independence of a wide class of initial conditions they evolved from. They moreover exhibit an anomalous suppression of long-wavelength density fluctuations and quickly become effectively hyperuniform. Our findings warrant the search for novel amorphous hyperuniform phases and cellular materials with unique physical properties.

Disordered hyperuniformity implies a hidden order on length scales that can be found in various amorphous materials. Klatt et al. analyse the evolution of random point patterns using Llyod’s algorithm and show that they converge to an effectively hyperuniform state regardless of the initial conditions.

Nonequilibrium strongly hyperuniform fluids of circle active particles with large local density fluctuations

Disordered hyperuniform structures are an exotic state of matter having vanishing long-wavelength density fluctuations similar to perfect crystals but without long-range order. Although its importance in materials science has been brought to the fore in past decades, the rational design of experimentally realizable disordered strongly hyperuniform microstructures remains challenging. Here we find a new type of nonequilibrium fluid with strong hyperuniformity in two-dimensional systems of chiral active particles, where particles perform independent circular motions of the radius R with the same handedness. This new hyperuniform fluid features a special length scale, i.e., the diameter of the circular trajectory of particles, below which large density fluctuations are observed. By developing a dynamic mean-field theory, we show that the large local density fluctuations can be explained as a motility-induced microphase separation, while the Fickian diffusion at large length scales and local center-of-mass-conserved noises are responsible for the global hyperuniformity.

Hidden Hyperuniformity in Soft Polymeric Materials

We investigate the nature of long-range density fluctuations in melts of model "soft" polymers, specifically stars and bottlebrushes, over a wide temperature range by molecular dynamics simulation. The cores of the stars and the backbones of bottlebrush polymers are found to have a hyperuniform distribution; i.e., they exhibit anomalously small density fluctuations over a wide temperature range above the glass transition temperature. The hyperuniformity of these substituent polymer subregions is hidden since the fluid as a whole does not exhibit this property. These findings offer a strategy for the practical design of hyperuniform polymeric materials.

Hyperuniformity with no fine tuning in sheared sedimenting suspensions

Particle suspensions, present in many natural and industrial settings, typically contain aggregates or other microstructures that can complicate macroscopic flow behaviors and damage processing equipment. Recent work found that applying uniform periodic shear near a critical transition can reduce fluctuations in the particle concentration across all length scales, leading to a hyperuniform state. However, this strategy for homogenization requires fine tuning of the strain amplitude. Here we show that in a model of sedimenting particles under periodic shear, there is a well-defined regime at low sedimentation speed where hyperuniform scaling automatically occurs. Our simulations and theoretical arguments show that the homogenization extends up to a finite length scale that diverges as the sedimentation speed approaches zero.

Suspensions appear in a wide range of industrial settings, and dispersing particles in a uniform manner throughout a fluid remains challenging for applications. Wang et al. obtain hyperuniform mixtures without fine tuning by harnessing self-organized criticality due to slow sedimentation and shear.

Hyperuniformity in amorphous speckle patterns

Hyperuniform structures possess the ability to confine and drive light, although their fabrication is extremely challenging. Here we demonstrate that speckle patterns obtained by a superposition of randomly arranged sources of Bessel beams can be used to generate hyperunifrom scalar fields. By exploiting laser light tailored with a spatial filter, we experimentally produce (without requiring any computational power) a speckle pattern possessing maxima at locations corresponding to a hyperuniform distribution. By properly filtering out intensity fluctuation from the same speckle pattern, it is possible to retrieve an intensity profile satisfying the hyperuniformity requirements. Our findings are supported by extensive numerical simulations.

Cryptographic hashing using chaotic hydrodynamics

Fluids may store and manipulate information, enabling complex applications ranging from digital logic gates to algorithmic self-assembly. While controllable hydrodynamic chaos has previously been observed in viscous fluids and harnessed for efficient mixing, its application to the manipulation of digital information has been sparsely investigated. We show that chaotic stirring of a viscous fluid naturally produces a characteristic signature of the stirring process in the arrangement of particles in the fluid, and that this signature directly satisfies the requirements for a cryptographic hash function. This includes strong divergence between similar stirring protocols' hashes and avoidance of collisions (identical hashes from distinct stirs), which are facilitated by noninvertibility and a broad chaotic attractor that samples many points in the fluid domain. The hashing ability of the chaotic fluidic map implicates several unexpected mechanisms, including incomplete mixing at short time scales that produces a hyperuniform hash distribution. We investigate the dynamics of hashing using interparticle winding statistics, and find that hashing starts with large-scale winding of kinetically disjoint regions of the chaotic attractor, which gradually gives way to smaller scale braiding of single-particle trajectories. In addition to providing a physically motivated approach to implementing and analyzing deterministic chaotic maps for cryptographic applications, we anticipate that our approach has applications in microfluidic proof-of-work systems and characterizing large-scale turbulent flows from sparse tracer data.

Disordered hyperuniformity in two-component nonadditive hard-disk plasmas

We study the behavior of a classical two-component ionic plasma made up of nonadditive hard disks with additional logarithmic Coulomb interactions between them. Due to the Coulomb repulsion, long-wavelength total density fluctuations are suppressed and the system is globally hyperuniform. Short-range volume effects lead to phase separation or to heterocoordination for positive or negative nonadditivities, respectively. These effects compete with the hidden long-range order imposed by hyperuniformity. As a result, the critical behavior of the mixture is modified, with long-wavelength concentration fluctuations partially damped when the system is charged. It is also shown that the decrease of configurational entropy due to hyperuniformity originates from contributions beyond the two-particle level. Finally, despite global hyperuniformity, we show that in our system the spatial configuration associated with each component separately is not hyperuniform, i.e., the system is not "multihyperuniform."
