Evidence for a Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in α-RuCl_{3}

Suppression of antiferromagnetic order by strain-enhanced frustration in honeycomb cobaltate

Layered honeycomb cobaltates are predicted as promising for realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, a many-body quantum entangled ground state characterized by fractional excitations. However, they exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures, hindering the expected quantum state. We demonstrate that controlling the trigonal distortion of CoO6 octahedra is crucial to suppress antiferromagnetic order through enhancing frustration in layered honeycomb cobaltates. Using heterostructure engineering on Cu3Co2SbO6 thin films, we adjust the trigonal distortion of CoO6 octahedra and the resulting trigonal crystal field. The original Néel temperature of 16 kelvin in bulk Cu3Co2SbO6 decreases (increases) to 7.8 kelvin (22.7 kelvin) in strained Cu3Co2SbO6 films by decreasing (increasing) the magnitude of the trigonal crystal fields. The first-principles calculation suggests the enhancement of geometrical frustration as the origin of the suppression of antiferromagnetism. This finding supports the potential of layered honeycomb cobaltate heterostructures and strain engineering in realizing extremely elusive quantum phases of matter.

Gate-Controlled Anyon Generation and Detection in Kitaev Spin Liquids

Reliable manipulation of non-Abelian Ising anyons supported by Kitaev spin liquids may enable intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we introduce a standalone scheme for both generating and detecting individual Ising anyons using tunable gate voltages in a heterostructure containing a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid and a monolayer semiconductor. The key ingredients of our setup are a Kondo coupling to stabilize an Ising anyon in the spin liquid around each electron in the semiconductor, and a large charging energy to allow control over the electron numbers in distinct gate-defined regions of the semiconductor. In particular, a single Ising anyon can be generated at a disk-shaped region by gate tuning its electron number to one, while it can be interferometrically detected by measuring the electrical conductance of a ring-shaped region around it whose electron number is allowed to fluctuate between zero and one. We provide concrete experimental guidelines for implementing our proposal in promising candidate materials like α-RuCl_{3}.

Vacancy Spectroscopy of Non-Abelian Kitaev Spin Liquids

Spin vacancies in the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are known to harbor Majorana zero modes, potentially enabling topological quantum computing at elevated temperatures. Here, we study the spectroscopic signatures of such Majorana zero modes in a scanning tunneling setup where a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid with a finite density of spin vacancies forms a tunneling barrier between a tip and a substrate. Our key result is a well-defined peak close to zero bias voltage in the derivative of the tunneling conductance whose voltage and intensity both increase with the density of vacancies. This "quasi-zero-voltage peak" is identified as the closest analog of the zero-voltage peak observed in topological superconductors that additionally reflects the fractionalized nature of spin-liquid-based Majorana zero modes. We further highlight a single-fermion Van Hove singularity at a higher voltage that reveals the energy scale of the emergent Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid. Our proposed signatures are within reach of current experiments on the candidate material α-RuCl_{3}.

A setup for hard x-ray time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at SwissFEL

We present a new setup for resonant inelastic hard x-ray scattering at the Bernina beamline of SwissFEL with energy, momentum, and temporal resolution. The compact R = 0.5 m Johann-type spectrometer can be equipped with up to three crystal analyzers and allows efficient collection of RIXS spectra. Optical pumping for time-resolved studies can be realized with a broad span of optical wavelengths. We demonstrate the performance of the setup at an overall ∼180 meV resolution in a study of ground-state and photoexcited (at 400 nm) honeycomb 5d iridate α-Li2IrO3. Steady-state RIXS spectra at the iridium L3-edge (11.214 keV) have been collected and are in very good agreement with data collected at synchrotrons. The time-resolved RIXS transients exhibit changes in the energy loss region <2 eV, whose features mostly result from the hopping nature of 5d electrons in the honeycomb lattice. These changes are ascribed to modulations of the Ir-to-Ir inter-site transition scattering efficiency, which we associate to a transient screening of the on-site Coulomb interaction.

Emergence of the isotropic Kitaev honeycomb latticeα-RuCl3and its magnetic properties

We present a comprehensive investigation of the crystal and magnetic structures of the van der Waals antiferromagnetα-RuCl3using single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction. The crystal structure at room temperature is a monoclinic (C2/m). However, with decreasing temperature, a remarkable first-order structural phase transition is observed, leading to the emergence of a rhombohedral (R3-) structure characterized by three-fold rotational symmetry forming an isotropic honeycomb lattice. On further cooling, a zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order develops belowTN=6∼6.6K. The critical exponent of the magnetic order parameter was determined to beβ=0.11(1), which is close to the two-dimensional Ising model. Additionally, the angular dependence of the magnetic critical field of the zigzag antiferromagnetic order for the polarized ferromagnetic phase reveals a six-fold rotational symmetry within theab-plane. These findingsreflect the symmetry associated with the Ising-like bond-dependent Kitaev spin interactions and underscore the universality of the Kitaev interaction-dominated antiferromagnetic system.

Signatures of Fractional Statistics in Nonlinear Pump-Probe Spectroscopy

We show that the presence of anyons in the excitation spectrum of a two-dimensional system can be inferred from nonlinear spectroscopic quantities. In particular, we consider pump-probe spectroscopy, where a sample is irradiated by two light pulses with an adjustable time delay between them. The relevant response coefficient exhibits a universal form that originates from the statistical phase acquired when anyons created by the first pulse braid around those created by the second. This behavior is shown to be qualitatively unchanged by nonuniversal physics including nonstatistical interactions and small nonzero temperatures. In magnetic systems, the signal of interest can be measured using currently available terahertz-domain probes, highlighting the potential usefulness of nonlinear spectroscopic techniques in the search for quantum spin liquids.

Nonlocal Spin Correlation as a Signature of Ising Anyons Trapped in Vacancies of the Kitaev Spin Liquid

In the Kitaev chiral spin liquid, Ising anyons are realized as Z_{2} fluxes binding Majorana zero modes, which, however, are thermal excitations with finite decay rates. On the other hand, a lattice vacancy traps a Z_{2} flux even in the ground state, resulting in the stable realization of a Majorana zero mode in a vacancy. We demonstrate that spin-spin correlation functions between two vacancy sites exhibit long-range correlation arising from the fractionalized character of Majorana zero modes, in spite of the strong decay of bulk spin correlations. Remarkably, this nonlocal spin correlation does not decrease as the distance between two vacancy sites increases, signaling Majorana teleportation. Furthermore, we clarify that the nonlocal correlation can be detected electrically via the measurement of nonlocal conductance between two vacancy sites, which is straightforwardly utilized for the readout of Majorana qubits. These findings pave the way to the measurement-based quantum computation with Ising anyons trapped in vacancies of the Kitaev spin liquid.

Continuous Spin Excitations in the Three-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet K_{2}Ni_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}

Continuous spin excitations are widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of novel spin states in quantum magnets, such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Here, we report the observation of such kind of excitations in K_{2}Ni_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}, which consists of two sets of intersected spin-1 (Ni^{2+}) trillium lattices. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurement on single crystals clearly shows a dominant excitation continuum, which exhibits a distinct temperature-dependent behavior from that of spin waves, and is rooted in strong quantum spin fluctuations. Further using the self-consistent-Gaussian-approximation method, we determine that the fourth- and fifth-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are dominant. These two bonds together form a unique three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which we name as a "hypertrillium" lattice. Our results provide direct evidence for the existence of QSL features in K_{2}Ni_{2}(SO_{4})_{3} and highlight the potential for the hypertrillium lattice to host frustrated quantum magnetism.

Ultrafast Spin Dynamics and Photoinduced Insulator-to-Metal Transition in α-RuCl3

Laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization is a phenomenon of utmost interest and attracts significant attention because it enables potential applications in ultrafast optoelectronics and spintronics. As a spin-orbit coupling assisted magnetic insulator, α-RuCl3 provides an attractive platform to explore the physics of electronic correlations and unconventional magnetism. Using time-dependent density functional theory, we explore the ultrafast laser-induced dynamics of the electronic and magnetic structures in α-RuCl3. Our study unveils that laser pulses can introduce ultrafast demagnetizations, accompanied by an out-of-equilibrium insulator-to-metal transition in a few tens of femtoseconds. The spin response significantly depends on the laser wavelength and polarization on account of the electron correlations, band renormalizations, and charge redistributions. These findings provide physical insights into the coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in α-RuCl3 and shed light on suppressing the long-range magnetic orders and reaching a proximate spin liquid phase for two-dimensional magnets on an ultrafast time scale.

Possible intermediate quantum spin liquid phase in α-RuCl3 under high magnetic fields up to 100 T

Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of a field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform high-field magnetization measurements of α-RuCl3 up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c* axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 35 T and about 83 T, between which lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. This is in sharp contrast to the case with in-plane fields, where a single transition is found at around 7 T and the intermediate QSL phase is absent instead. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c* axis up to 90° (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the K-J-Γ-[Formula: see text] model for α-RuCl3 with a large Kitaev term we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.

Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na_{2}Co_{2}TeO_{6}

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na_{2}Co_{2}TeO_{6} in a broad magnetic field range (0  T≤B≤17.5  T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na_{2}Co_{2}TeO_{6} plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Polar magnetism and chemical bond inα-RuCl3

The micaceous black allotrope of ruthenium trichloride is the subject of many recent experimental and theoretical studies. Even so, its structural and magnetic properties remain undecided; monoclinic, trigonal and rhombohedral space groups for the crystal structure have been proposed on the basis of various types of experiments. The magnetic structure is often discussed in the context of the Kitaev state, but inevitably they are inconclusive discussions in the absence of structural and magnetic space groups. Johnsonet alinfer a candidate for the magnetic structure (C_c2/m) from results gathered in an extensive set of experiments on an untwined sample ofα-RuCl₃(Johnsonet al2015Phys. Rev.B92235119). The proposed zigzag antiferromagnetic ground state of Ru ions does not respond to bulk magnetic probes, with optical rotation and all forms of dichroism prohibited by symmetry. Experimental techniques exploited by Johnsonet alincluded x-ray and magnetic neutron diffraction. Properties of the candidate magnetic structure not previously explored include polar magnetism that supports Ru Dirac multipoles, e.g. a ruthenium anapole that is also known as a toroidal dipole. In a general case, Dirac dipoles are capable of generating interactions between magnetic ions, as in an electrical Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction (Kaplan and Mahanti 2011Phys. Rev.B83174432; Zhaoet al2021Nat. Mater.20341). Notably, the existence of Dirac quadrupoles in the pseudo-gap phases of cuprate superconductors YBCO and Hg1201 account for observed magnetic Bragg diffraction patterns. Dirac multipoles contribute to the diffraction of both x-rays and neutrons, and a stringent test of the magnetic structure C_c2/m awaits future experiments. From symmetry-informed calculations we show that, the magnetic candidate permits Bragg spots that arise solely from Dirac multipoles. Stringent tests of C_c2/m can also be accomplished by performing resonant x-ray diffraction with signal enhancement from the chlorineK-edge. X-ray absorption spectra published forα-RuCl₃possess a significant low-energy feature (Plumbet al2014Phys. Rev.B90041112(R)). Many experimental studies of other Cl-metal compounds concluded that identical features hallmark the chemical bond. Using a monoclinic C_c2/m structure, we predict the contribution to Bragg diffraction at the ClK-edge absorption. Specifically, the variation of intensity of Bragg spots with rotation of the sample about the reflection vector. The two principal topics of our studies, polar magnetism and the chemical bond in the black allotrope of ruthenium trichloride, are brought together in a minimal model of magnetic Ru ions in C_c2/m.

Ground-State Spin Dynamics in d1 Kagome-Lattice Titanium Fluorides

Many quantum magnetic materials suffer from structural imperfections. The effects of structural disorder on bulk properties are difficult to assess systematically from a chemical perspective due to the complexities of chemical synthesis. The recently reported S = 1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet, (CH₃NH₃)₂NaTi₃F₁₂, 1-Ti, with highly symmetric kagome layers and disordered interlayer methylammonium cations, shows no magnetic ordering down to 0.1 K. To study the impact of structural disorder in the titanium fluoride kagome compounds, (CH₃NH₃)₂KTi₃F₁₂, 2-Ti, was prepared. It presents no detectable structural disorder and only a small degree of distortion of the kagome lattice. The methylammonium disorder model of 1-Ti and order in 2-Ti were confirmed by atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The antiferromagnetic interactions and band structures of both compounds were calculated based on spin-polarized density functional theory and support the magnetic structure analysis. Three spin-glass-like (SGL) transitions were observed in 2-Ti at 0.5, 1.4, and 2.3 K, while a single SGL transition can be observed in 1-Ti at 0.8 K. The absolute values of the Curie-Weiss temperatures of both 1-Ti (-139.5(7) K) and 2-Ti (-83.5(7) K) are larger than the SGL transition temperatures, which is indicative of geometrically frustrated spin glass (GFSG) states. All the SGL transitions are quenched with an applied field >0.1 T, which indicates novel magnetic phases emerge under small applied magnetic fields. The well-defined structure and the lack of structural disorder in 2-Ti suggest that 2-Ti is an ideal model compound for studying GFSG states and the potential transitions between spin liquid and GFSG states.

Unveiling the S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb spin liquids

The S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb model (KHM) is a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state coupled to a static Z₂ gauge field. Employing an SO(6) Majorana representation of spin3/2’s, we find an exact representation of the conserved plaquette fluxes in terms of static Z₂ gauge fields akin to the S=1/2 KHM which enables us to treat the remaining interacting matter fermion sector in a parton mean-field theory. We uncover a ground-state phase diagram consisting of gapped and gapless QSLs. Our parton description is in quantitative agreement with numerical simulations, and is furthermore corroborated by the addition of a [001] single ion anisotropy (SIA) which continuously connects the gapless Dirac QSL of our model with that of the S=1/2 KHM. In the presence of a weak [111] SIA, we discuss an emergent chiral QSL within a perturbation theory.

Recently, material realizations of the spin 3/2 Kitaev honeycomb model have been proposed, but the model has not been solved by either analytical or numerical methods. Here the authors report exact results for the spin 3/2 model consistent with numerical simulations, and find gapped and gapless quantum spin liquids.

The non-centrosymmetric layered compounds IrTe2I and RhTe2I

The previously unreported layered compounds IrTe₂I and RhTe₂I were prepared by a high-pressure synthesis method. Single crystal X-ray and powder X-ray diffraction studies find that the compounds are isostructural, crystallizing in a layered orthorhombic structure in the non-centrosymmetric, non-symmorphic space group Pca2₁ (#29). Characterization reveals diamagnetic, high resistivity, semiconducting behavior for both compounds, consistent with the +3 chemical valence and d⁶ electronic configurations for both iridium and rhodium and the Te-Te dimers seen in the structural study. Electronic band structures are calculated for both compounds, showing good agreement with the experimental results.

Spin-glass transition in the spin–orbit-entangled Jeff = 0 Mott insulating double-perovskite ruthenate

We have successfully synthesized new Ru⁴⁺ double perovskite oxides SrLaInRuO₆ and SrLaGaRuO₆, which are expected to be a spin–orbit coupled J_eff = 0 Mott insulating ground state. Their magnetic susceptibility is much significant than that expected for a single Ru⁴⁺ ion for which exchange coupling with other ions is negligible. Their isothermal magnetization process suggests that there are about 20 percent isolated spins. These origins would be the Ru³⁺/Ru⁵⁺ magnetic defects, while the regular Ru⁴⁺ sites remain nonmagnetic. Moreover, SrLaGaRuO₆ shows a spin-glass-like magnetic transition at low temperatures, probably caused by isolated spins. The observed spin-glass can be interpreted by the analogy of a dilute magnetic alloy, which can be seen as a precursor to the mobile J_eff = 1 exciton as a dispersive mode as predicted.

Work statistics across a quantum critical surface

We study the universality of work statistics of a system quenched through a quantum critical surface. By using the adiabatic perturbation theory, we obtain the general scaling behavior for all cumulants of work. These results extend the studies of Kibble-Zurek mechanism scaling of work statistics from an isolated quantum critical point to a critical surface. As an example, we study the scaling behavior of work statistics in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model featured with a critical line. By utilizing the trace formula for quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian, we obtain the exact characteristic function of work of the 2D Kitaev model at zero temperature. The results confirm our prediction.

Honeycomb-Structure RuI3 , A New Quantum Material Related to α-RuCl3

The layered honeycomb lattice material α-RuCl₃ has emerged as a prime candidate for displaying the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state, and as such has attracted much research interest. Here a new layered honeycomb lattice polymorph of RuI₃ , a material that is strongly chemically and structurally related to α-RuCl₃ is described_. The material is synthesized at moderately elevated pressures and is stable under ambient conditions. Preliminary characterization reveals that it is a metallic conductor, with the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 0.35 K and an unusually large T-linear contribution to the heat capacity. It is proposed that this phase, with a layered honeycomb lattice and strong spin-orbit coupling, provides a new route for the characterization of quantum materials.

Theory of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Recent numerical studies indicate that the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb lattice model undergoes a magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition into a new spin-liquid phase. This intermediate-field phase has been previously characterized as a gapless spin liquid. By implementing a recently developed variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the zero-field model, we demonstrate that the field-induced spin liquid is gapped and belongs to Kitaev’s 16-fold way. Specifically, the low-field non-Abelian liquid with Chern number C = ±1 transitions into an Abelian liquid with C = ±4. The critical field and the field-dependent behaviors of key physical quantities are in good quantitative agreement with published numerical results. Furthermore, we derive an effective field theory for the field-induced critical point which readily explains the ostensibly gapless nature of the intermediate-field spin liquid.

Identification of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence

Quantum spin liquids realize massive entanglement and fractional quasiparticles from localized spins, proposed as an avenue for quantum science and technology. In particular, topological quantum computations are suggested in the non-abelian phase of Kitaev quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions, and detection of Majorana fermions is one of the most outstanding problems in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a concrete way to identify the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence. Topologically protected critical lines exist on a plane of magnetic field angles, and their shapes are determined by microscopic spin interactions. A chirality operator plays a key role in demonstrating microscopic dependences of the critical lines. We also show that the chirality operator can be used to evaluate topological properties of the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid without relying on Majorana fermion descriptions. Experimental criteria for the non-abelian spin liquid state are provided for future experiments.

Antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction inJeff1/2 cobalt honeycomb materials Na3Co2SbO6and Na2Co2TeO6

Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue for quantum magnetism research. We conclude that Na₃Co₂SbO₆and Na₂Co₂TeO₆are new honeycomb cobalt-based systems with AFM Kitaev interaction by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis. The spin-orbit excitons observed at 20-28 meV in both compounds strongly support the idea that Co²⁺ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangledJ_eff= 1/2 state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can describe the spin-wave excitations of both compounds with additional 3rd nearest-neighbor interaction. Our best-fit parameters show significant AFM Kitaev terms and off-diagonal symmetric anisotropy terms of a similar magnitude in both compounds. We also found a strong magnon-damping effect at the higher energy part of the spin waves, entirely consistent with observations in other Kitaev magnets. Our work suggests Na₃Co₂SbO₆and Na₂Co₂TeO₆as rare examples of the AFM Kitaev magnets based on the systematic studies of the spin waves and analysis.

Efficient Method for Prediction of Metastable or Ground Multipolar Ordered States and Its Application in Monolayer α-RuX_{3} (X=Cl, I)

Exotic high-rank multipolar order parameters have been found to be unexpectedly active in more and more correlated materials in recent years. Such multipoles are usually dubbed "hidden orders" since they are insensitive to common experimental probes. Theoretically, it is also difficult to predict multipolar orders via ab initio calculations in real materials. Here, we present an efficient method to predict possible multipoles in materials based on linear response theory under random phase approximation. Using this method, we successfully predict two pure metastable magnetic octupolar states in monolayer α-RuCl_{3}, which is confirmed by self-consistent unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. We then demonstrate that these octupolar states can be stabilized in monolayer α-RuI_{3}, one of which becomes the octupolar ground state. Furthermore, we also predict a fingerprint of an orthogonal magnetization pattern produced by the octupole moment that can be easily detected by experiment. The method and the example presented in this Letter serve as a guide for searching multipolar order parameters in other correlated materials.

Field-induced quantum spin disordered state in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na₂Co₂TeO₆ (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (⊥ b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets.

On the proximate Kitaev quantum-spin liquid α-RuCl3: thermodynamics, excitations and continua

This topical review provides an overview over recent thermodynamic, infrared, and THz results on the proximate Kitaev spin-liquid. Quantum-spin liquids are exotic phases characterized by the absence of magnetic ordering even at the lowest temperatures and by the occurrence of fractionalized spin excitations. Among those, Kitaev spin liquids are most fascinating as they belong to the rare class of model systems, that can be solved analytically by decomposing localized spinsS= 1/2 into Majorana fermions. The main aim of this review is to summarize experimental evidence obtained by THz spectroscopy and utilizing heat-capacity experiments, which point to the existence of fractionalized excitations in the spin-liquid state, which in α-RuCl₃exists at temperatures just above the onset of magnetic order or at in-plane magnetic fields just beyond the quantum-critical point where antiferromagnetic order becomes suppressed. Thermodynamic and spectroscopic results are compared to theoretical predictions and model calculations. In addition, we document recent progress in elucidating the sub-gap (<1 eV) electronic structure of the 4d⁵ruthenium electrons to characterize their local electronic configuration. The on-site excitation spectra of thedelectrons below the optical gap can be consistently explained using a spin-orbit coupling constant of ∼170 meV and the concept of multiple spin-orbital excitations. Furthermore, we discuss the phonon spectra of the title compound including rigid-plane shear and compression modes of the single molecular layers. In recent theoretical concepts it has been shown that phonons can couple to Majorana fermions and may play a substantial role in establishing the half-integer thermal quantum Hall effect observed in this material.

Identification of magnetic interactions and high-field quantum spin liquid in α-RuCl3

The frustrated magnet α-RuCl3 constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in α-RuCl3, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on α-RuCl3.

Sign Structure of Thermal Hall Conductivity and Topological Magnons for In-Plane Field Polarized Kitaev Magnets

The appearance of half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity in α-RuCl_{3} in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields has been taken as a strong evidence for the Kitaev spin liquid. Apart from the quantization, the observed sign structure of the thermal Hall conductivity is also consistent with predictions from the exact solution of the Kitaev honeycomb model. Namely, the thermal Hall conductivity changes sign when the field direction is reversed with respect to the heat current, which is perpendicular to one of the three nearest neighbor bonds on the honeycomb lattice. On the other hand, the thermal Hall conductivity is almost zero when the field is applied along the bond direction. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that such a peculiar sign structure of the thermal Hall conductivity is a generic property of the polarized state in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields. In this case, the thermal Hall effect arises from topological magnons with finite Chern numbers, and the sign structure follows from the symmetries of the momentum space Berry curvature. Using a realistic spin model with bond-dependent interactions, we show that the thermal Hall conductivity can have a magnitude comparable to that observed in the experiments. Hence, the sign structure alone cannot make a strong case for the Kitaev spin liquid. The quantization at very low temperatures, however, will be a decisive test as the magnon contribution vanishes in the zero temperature limit.

Spin Hamiltonians in Magnets: Theories and Computations

The effective spin Hamiltonian method has drawn considerable attention for its power to explain and predict magnetic properties in various intriguing materials. In this review, we summarize different types of interactions between spins (hereafter, spin interactions, for short) that may be used in effective spin Hamiltonians as well as the various methods of computing the interaction parameters. A detailed discussion about the merits and possible pitfalls of each technique of computing interaction parameters is provided.

Van Hove singularity in the magnon spectrum of the antiferromagnetic quantum honeycomb lattice

In quantum magnets, magnetic moments fluctuate heavily and are strongly entangled with each other, a fundamental distinction from classical magnetism. Here, with inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we probe the spin correlations of the honeycomb lattice quantum magnet YbCl₃. A linear spin wave theory with a single Heisenberg interaction on the honeycomb lattice, including both transverse and longitudinal channels of the neutron response, reproduces all of the key features in the spectrum. In particular, we identify a Van Hove singularity, a clearly observable sharp feature within a continuum response. The demonstration of such a Van Hove singularity in a two-magnon continuum is important as a confirmation of broadly held notions of continua in quantum magnetism and additionally because analogous features in two-spinon continua could be used to distinguish quantum spin liquids from merely disordered systems. These results establish YbCl₃ as a benchmark material for quantum magnetism on the honeycomb lattice.

Orbital Effects in Solids: Basics, Recent Progress, and Opportunities

The properties of transition metal compounds are largely determined by nontrivial interplay of different degrees of freedom: charge, spin, lattice, and also orbital ones. Especially rich and interesting effects occur in systems with orbital degeneracy. For example, they result in the famous Jahn-Teller effect, leading to a plethora of consequences for static and dynamic properties, including nontrivial quantum effects. In the present review, we discuss the main phenomena in the physics of such systems, paying central attention to the novel manifestations of those. After shortly summarizing the basic phenomena and their descriptions, we concentrate on several specific directions in this field. One of them is the reduction of effective dimensionality in many systems with orbital degrees of freedom due to the directional character of orbitals, with the concomitant appearance of some instabilities that lead in particular to the formation of dimers, trimers, and similar clusters in a material. The properties of such cluster systems, which are largely determined by their orbital structure, are discussed in detail, and many specific examples of those in different materials are presented. Another big field that has acquired special significance relatively recently is the role of the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The mutual influence of this interaction and the more traditional Jahn-Teller physics is treated in detail in the second part of the review. In discussing all of these questions, special attention is paid to novel quantum effects.

Electrical Access to Ising Anyons in Kitaev Spin Liquids

We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of Z_{2} vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons (Z_{2} vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.

Thermodynamic Perspective on Field-Induced Behavior of α-RuCl_{3}

Measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter (Γ_{B}) and specific heat on the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl_{3} are used to access in-plane field and temperature dependence of the entropy up to 12 T and down to 1 K. No signatures corresponding to phase transitions are detected beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region, but only a shoulderlike anomaly in Γ_{B}, involving an entropy increment as small as 10^{-5}Rlog2. These observations put into question the presence of a phase transition between the purported quantum spin liquid and the field-polarized state of α-RuCl_{3}. We show theoretically that at low temperatures Γ_{B} is sensitive to crossings in the lowest excitations within gapped phases, and identify the measured shoulderlike anomaly as being of such origin. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that the shoulderlike anomaly can be reproduced in extended Kitaev models that gain proximity to an additional phase at finite field without entering it. We discuss manifestations of this proximity in other measurements.

Quantum and Thermal Phase Transitions of the Triangular SU(3) Heisenberg Model under Magnetic Fields

We study the quantum and thermal phase transition phenomena of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on triangular lattice in the presence of magnetic fields. Performing a scaling analysis on large-size cluster mean-field calculations endowed with a density-matrix renormalization-group solver, we reveal the quantum phases selected by quantum fluctuations from the massively degenerate classical ground-state manifold. The magnetization process up to saturation reflects three different magnetic phases. The low- and high-field phases have strong nematic nature, and especially the latter is found only via a nontrivial reconstruction of symmetry generators from the standard spin and quadrupolar description. We also perform a semiclassical Monte Carlo simulation to show that thermal fluctuations prefer the same three phases as well. Moreover, we find that exotic topological phase transitions driven by the binding-unbinding of fractional (half-)vortices take place, due to the nematicity of the low- and high-field phases. Possible experimental realization with alkaline-earth-like cold atoms is also discussed.

Pulsed spallation neutron spectroscopy of low dimensional magnets: past, present, and future

The early 1990s saw the first useful application of pulsed neutron spectroscopy to the study of excitations in low dimensional magnetic systems, with Roger Cowley as a key participant in important early experiments. Since that time the technique has blossomed as a powerful tool utilizing vastly improved neutron instrumentation coupled with more powerful pulsed sources. Here we review representative experiments illustrating some of the fascinating physics that has been revealed in quasi-one and two dimensional systems.

Novel Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids in Kitaev Magnets

Quantum magnets with pure Kitaev spin exchange interactions can host a gapped quantum spin liquid with a single Majorana edge mode propagating in the counterclockwise direction when a small positive magnetic field is applied. Here, we show how under a sufficiently strong positive magnetic field a topological transition into a gapped quantum spin liquid with two Majorana edge modes propagating in the clockwise direction occurs. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is found to turn the nonchiral Kitaev's gapless quantum spin liquid into a chiral one with equal Berry phases at the two Dirac points. Thermal Hall conductance experiments can provide evidence of the novel topologically gapped quantum spin liquid states predicted.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma Chain and Emergent SU(2) Symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra "Γ term," using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)_{1} Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)_{1} predictions. A modified non-Abelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent "partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an O_{h}→D_{4} spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Magnon bound states versus anyonic Majorana excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet α-RuCl3

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as α-RuCl₃. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound (B = 7 − 10 T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here, we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.

α-RuCl₃ has properties consistent with predictions of a phase hosting fractionalized Majorana fermions but that could also be explained by conventional magnetic excitations. Here the authors find evidence for fractionalized quasiparticles by studying magnetic excitations across the field-temperature phase diagram.

Ab Initio Mismatched Interface Theory of Graphene on α-RuCl_{3}: Doping and Magnetism

Recent developments in twisted and lattice-mismatched bilayers have revealed a rich phase space of van der Waals systems and generated excitement. Among these systems are heterobilayers, which can offer new opportunities to control van der Waals systems with strong in plane correlations such as spin-orbit-assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl_{3}. Nevertheless, a theoretical ab initio framework for mismatched heterobilayers without even approximate periodicity is sorely lacking. We propose a general strategy for calculating electronic properties of such systems, mismatched interface theory (MINT), and apply it to the graphene/α-RuCl_{3} (GR/α-RuCl_{3}) heterostructure. Using MINT, we predict uniform doping of 4.77% from graphene to α-RuCl_{3} and magnetic interactions in α-RuCl_{3} to shift the system toward the Kitaev point. Hence, we demonstrate that MINT can guide targeted materialization of desired model systems and discuss recent experiments on GR/α-RuCl_{3} heterostructures.

Possible Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquid State in 2D Materials with S=3/2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) form an extremely unusual magnetic state in which the spins are highly correlated and fluctuate coherently down to the lowest temperatures, but without symmetry breaking and without the formation of any static long-range-ordered magnetism. Such intriguing phenomena are not only of great fundamental relevance in themselves, but also hold promise for quantum computing and quantum information. Among different types of QSLs, the exactly solvable Kitaev model is attracting much attention, with most proposed candidate materials, e.g., RuCl_{3} and Na_{2}IrO_{3}, having an effective S=1/2 spin value. Here, via extensive first-principles-based simulations, we report the investigation of the Kitaev physics and possible Kitaev QSL state in epitaxially strained Cr-based monolayers, such as CrSiTe_{3}, that rather possess a S=3/2 spin value. Our study thus extends the playground of Kitaev physics and QSLs to 3d transition metal compounds.

Randomly Hopping Majorana Fermions in the Diluted Kitaev System α-Ru_{0.8}Ir_{0.2}Cl_{3}

dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and Raman scattering measurements are combined to probe low-lying spin excitations in α-Ru_{1-x}Ir_{x}Cl_{3} (x≈0.2), which realizes a disordered spin liquid. At intermediate energies (ℏω>3  meV), Raman spectroscopy evidences linearly ω-dependent Majorana-like excitations, obeying Fermi statistics. This points to robustness of a Kitaev paramagnetic state under spin vacancies. At low energies below 3 meV, we observe power-law dependences and quantum-critical-like scalings of the thermodynamic quantities, implying the presence of a weakly divergent low-energy density of states. This scaling phenomenology is interpreted in terms of the random hoppings of Majorana fermions. Our results demonstrate an emergent hierarchy of spin excitations in a diluted Kitaev honeycomb system subject to spin vacancies and bond randomness.

Weak-field induced nonmagnetic state in a Co-based honeycomb

Layered honeycomb magnets are of interest as potential realizations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL), a quantum state with long-range spin entanglement and an exactly solvable Hamiltonian. Conventional magnetically ordered states are present for all currently known candidate materials, however, because non-Kitaev terms in the Hamiltonians obscure the Kitaev physics. Current experimental studies of the KQSL are focused on 4d or 5d transition metal-based honeycombs, in which strong spin-orbit coupling can be expected, yielding Kitaev interaction that dominates in an applied magnetic field. In contrast, for 3d-based layered honeycomb magnets, spin-orbit coupling is weak, and thus, Kitaev physics should be substantially less accessible. Here, we report our studies on BaCo₂(AsO₄)₂, for which we find that the magnetic order associated with the non-Kitaev interactions can be fully suppressed by a relatively low magnetic field, yielding a nonmagnetic material and implying the presence of strong magnetic frustration and weak non-Kitaev interactions.

Electronic Properties of α-RuCl_{3} in Proximity to Graphene

In the pursuit of developing routes to enhance magnetic Kitaev interactions in α-RuCl_{3}, as well as probing doping effects, we investigate the electronic properties of α-RuCl_{3} in proximity to graphene. We study α-RuCl_{3}/graphene heterostructures via ab initio density functional theory calculations, Wannier projection, and nonperturbative exact diagonalization methods. We show that α-RuCl_{3} becomes strained when placed on graphene and charge transfer occurs between the two layers, making α-RuCl_{3} (graphene) lightly electron doped (hole doped). This gives rise to an insulator-to-metal transition in α-RuCl_{3} with the Fermi energy located close to the bottom of the upper Hubbard band of the t_{2g} manifold. These results suggest the possibility of realizing metallic and even exotic superconducting states. Moreover, we show that in the strained α-RuCl_{3} monolayer the Kitaev interactions are enhanced by more than 50% compared to the unstrained bulk structure. Finally, we discuss scenarios related to transport experiments in α-RuCl_{3}/graphene heterostructures.

Nonsymmorphic-Symmetry-Protected Topological Magnons in Three-Dimensional Kitaev Materials

Topological phases in magnetic materials offer novel tunability of topological properties via varying the underlying magnetism. We show that three-dimensional Kitaev materials with nonsymmorphic symmetries can provide a great opportunity for controlling symmetry-protected topological nodal magnons. These materials are originally considered as strong candidates for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid due to the bond-dependent frustrating spin-exchange interactions. As a concrete example, we consider the symmetry and topology of the magnons in the canted zigzag ordered state in the hyperhoneycomb β-Li_{2}IrO_{3}, which can be obtained by applying a magnetic field in the counter-rotating spiral state at zero field. It is shown that the magnetic glide symmetries and the non-Hermitian nature of the bosonic magnons lead to unique topological protection that is different from the case of their fermionic counterparts. We investigate how such topological magnons can be controlled by changing the symmetry of the underlying spin-exchange interactions.

One Proximate Kitaev Spin Liquid in the K-J-Γ Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

In addition to the Kitaev (K) interaction, candidate Kitaev materials also possess Heisenberg (J) and off-diagonal symmetric (Γ) couplings. We investigate the quantum (S=1/2) K-J-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice by a variational Monte Carlo method. In addition to the "generic" Kitaev spin liquid (KSL), we find that there is just one proximate KSL (PKSL) phase, while the rest of the phase diagram contains different magnetically ordered states. The PKSL is a gapless Z_{2} state with 14 Majorana cones, which in contrast to the KSL has a gapless spin response. In a magnetic field applied normal to the honeycomb plane, it realizes two of Kitaev's gapped chiral spin-liquid phases, of which one is non-Abelian with Chern number ν=5 and the other is Abelian with ν=4. These two phases could be distinguished by their thermal Hall conductance.

Heisenberg-Kitaev physics in magnetic fields

Magnetic insulators in the regime of strong spin-orbit coupling exhibit intriguing behaviors in external magnetic fields, reflecting the frustrated nature of their effective interactions. We review the recent advances in understanding the field responses of materials that are described by models with strongly bond-dependent spin exchange interactions, such as Kitaev's celebrated honeycomb model and its extensions. We discuss the field-induced phases and the complex magnetization processes found in these theories and compare with experimental results in the layered Mott insulators [Formula: see text]-RuCl₃ and Na₂IrO₃, which are believed to realize this fascinating physics.

Vison Crystals in an Extended Kitaev Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We introduce an extension of the Kitaev honeycomb model by including four-spin interactions that preserve the local gauge structure and, hence, the integrability of the original model. The extended model has a rich phase diagram containing five distinct vison crystals, as well as a symmetric π-flux spin liquid with a Fermi surface of Majorana fermions and a sequence of Lifshitz transitions. We discuss possible experimental signatures and, in particular, present finite-temperature Monte Carlo calculations of the specific heat and the static vison structure factor. We argue that our extended model emerges naturally from generic perturbations to the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Magnetic properties of the BaNi2(As1-x V x )2O8 honeycomb system

The Kitaev model for magnetic interactions on a honeycomb lattice, which underlies the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in such systems, has long been established and experimentally confirmed. Current studies on Kitaev QSLs have focused on heavy-metal-based Mott insulators where strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to bond-dependent spin anisotropy. Here we examine a 3d transition-metal-based honeycomb lattice material BaNi₂(As_1-x V _x )₂O₈, where the SOC is weak but spin exchange coupling is strongly frustrated due to the crystal field. We present an investigation of the crystal structure and magnetization of this series of Ni-based honeycomb materials, providing an alternative perspective in the search for the QSL in 3d-element-based honeycomb systems.

Microscopic Mechanism for a Higher-Spin Kitaev Model

The spin S=1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions and strong Hund's coupling in transition metal cations. The S=1 Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions are generated from superexchange paths. Taking into account the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg term from direct-exchange paths, the Kitaev interaction dominates the physics of the S=1 system. Using an exact diagonalization technique, we show a finite regime of S=1 spin liquid in the presence of the Heisenberg interaction. Candidate materials are proposed, and generalization to higher spins is discussed.

Hidden Plaquette Order in a Classical Spin Liquid Stabilized by Strong Off-Diagonal Exchange

We report a new classical spin liquid in which the collective flux degrees of freedom break the translation symmetry of the honeycomb lattice. This exotic phase exists in the frustrated spin-orbit magnets where a dominant off-diagonal exchange, the so-called Γ term, results in a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy at the classical level. We demonstrate that the system undergoes a phase transition driven by thermal order by disorder at a critical temperature T_{c}≈0.04|Γ|. This transition reduces the emergent spherical spin symmetry to a cubic one: spins point predominantly toward the cubic axes, yet seem to remain disordered at T<T_{c}. Importantly, we show that the phase transition corresponds to a hidden plaquette ordering of hexagonal fluxes, which explicitly breaks the cubic symmetry, a scenario that is confirmed by our extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We further compute the dynamical structure factors of the spin-liquid phase and reveal unusual dynamical properties of the hexagonal flux parameters.

Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Elementary excitations in entangled states such as quantum spin liquids may exhibit exotic statistics different from those obeyed by fundamental bosons and fermions. Non-Abelian anyons exist in a Kitaev spin liquid-the ground state of an exactly solvable model. A smoking-gun signature of these excitations, namely a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity, was recently reported in α-RuCl₃. While fascinating, a microscopic theory for this phenomenon remains elusive because the pure Kitaev model cannot display this effect in an intermediate magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic theory of the Kitaev spin liquid emerging between the low- and high-field states. Essential to this result is an antiferromagnetic off-diagonal symmetric interaction which allows the Kitaev spin liquid to protrude from the ferromagnetic Kitaev limit under a magnetic field. This generic model displays a strong field anisotropy, and we predict a wide spin liquid regime when the field is perpendicular to the honeycomb plane.
