Review on the Scientific and Technological Breakthroughs in Thermal Emission Engineering

The emission of thermal radiation is a physical process of fundamental and technological interest. From different approaches, thermal radiation can be regarded as one of the basic mechanisms of heat transfer, as a fundamental quantum phenomenon of photon production, or as the propagation of electromagnetic waves. However, unlike light emanating from conventional photonic sources, such as lasers or antennas, thermal radiation is characterized for being broadband, omnidirectional, and unpolarized. Due to these features, ultimately tied to its inherently incoherent nature, taming thermal radiation constitutes a challenging issue. Latest advances in the field of nanophotonics have led to a whole set of artificial platforms, ranging from spatially structured materials and, much more recently, to time-modulated media, offering promising avenues for enhancing the control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves, from far- to near-field regimes. Given the ongoing parallelism between the fields of nanophotonics and thermal emission, these recent developments have been harnessed to deal with radiative thermal processes, thereby forming the current basis of thermal emission engineering. In this review, we survey some of the main breakthroughs carried out in this burgeoning research field, from fundamental aspects to theoretical limits, the emergence of effects and phenomena, practical applications, challenges, and future prospects.

Quantum Thermodynamic Uncertainty Relations, Generalized Current Fluctuations and Nonequilibrium Fluctuation–Dissipation Inequalities

Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs) represent one of the few broad-based and fundamental relations in our toolbox for tackling the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium systems. One form of TUR quantifies the minimal energetic cost of achieving a certain precision in determining a nonequilibrium current. In this initial stage of our research program, our goal is to provide the quantum theoretical basis of TURs using microphysics models of linear open quantum systems where it is possible to obtain exact solutions. In paper [Dong et al., Entropy 2022, 24, 870], we show how TURs are rooted in the quantum uncertainty principles and the fluctuation–dissipation inequalities (FDI) under fully nonequilibrium conditions. In this paper, we shift our attention from the quantum basis to the thermal manifests. Using a microscopic model for the bath’s spectral density in quantum Brownian motion studies, we formulate a “thermal” FDI in the quantum nonequilibrium dynamics which is valid at high temperatures. This brings the quantum TURs we derive here to the classical domain and can thus be compared with some popular forms of TURs. In the thermal-energy-dominated regimes, our FDIs provide better estimates on the uncertainty of thermodynamic quantities. Our treatment includes full back-action from the environment onto the system. As a concrete example of the generalized current, we examine the energy flux or power entering the Brownian particle and find an exact expression of the corresponding current–current correlations. In so doing, we show that the statistical properties of the bath and the causality of the system+bath interaction both enter into the TURs obeyed by the thermodynamic quantities.

Enhancement of lateral Casimir force on a rotating particle near hyperbolic metamaterial

Enhancement of weak Casimir forces is extremely important for their practical detection and subsequent applications in variety of scientific and technological fields. We study the lateral Casimir forces acting on the rotating particles with small radius of 50 nm as well as that with large radius of 500 nm near the hyperbolic metamaterial made of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires. It is found that the lateral Casimir force acting on the small particle of 50 nm near hyperbolic metamaterial with appropriate filling fraction can be enhanced nearly four times comparing with that acting on the same particle near SiC bulk in the previous study. Such enhancement is caused by the coupling between the resonance mode excited by nanoparticle and the hyperbolic mode supported by hyperbolic metamaterial. The results obtained in this study provide an efficient method to enhance the interaction of nanoscale objects.

Negative Differential Friction Predicted in 2D Ferroelectric In2 Se3 Commensurate Contacts

At the macroscopic scale, the friction force (f) is found to increase with the normal load (N), according to the classic law of Da Vinci-Amontons, namely, f = µN, with a positive definite friction coefficient (μ). Here, first-principles calculations are employed to predict that, the static force f, measured by the corrugation in the sliding potential energy barrier, is lowered upon increasing the normal load applied on one layer of the recently discovered ferroelectric In₂ Se₃ over another commensurate layer of In₂ Se₃ . That is, a negative differential friction coefficient μ can be realized, which thus simultaneously breaking the classic Da Vinci-Amontons law. Such a striking and counterintuitive observation can be rationalized by the delicate interplay of the interfacial van der Waals repulsive interactions and the electrostatic energy reduction due to the enhancement of the intralayer SeIn ionic bonding via charge redistribution under load. The present findings are expected to play an instrumental role in design of high-performance solid lubricants and mechanical-electronic nanodevices.

Rotational Doppler cooling and heating

Doppler cooling is a widely used technique to laser cool atoms, molecules, and nanoparticles by exploiting the Doppler shift associated with translational motion. The rotational Doppler effect arising from rotational coordinate transformation should similarly enable optical manipulation of the rotational motion of nanosystems. Here, we show that rotational Doppler cooling and heating (RDC and RDH) effects embody rich and unexplored physics, including an unexpected strong dependence on particle morphology. For geometrically constrained particles, cooling and heating are observed at red- or blue-detuned laser frequencies relative to particle resonances. In contrast, for nanosystems that can be modeled as solid particles, RDH appears close to resonant illumination, while detuned frequencies produce cooling of rotation. We further predict that RDH can lead to optomechanical spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, where an achiral particle under linearly polarized illumination starts spontaneously rotating. Our results open up new exciting possibilities to control the rotational motion of nanosystems.

Nonadditive Enhancement of Nonequilibrium Atom-Surface Interactions

The motion-induced drag force acting on a particle moving parallel to an arrangement of N objects is analyzed. Particular focus is placed on the nonequilibrium statistics of the interaction and on the interplay between the system's geometry and the different dissipative processes occurring in realistic setups. We show that the drag force can exhibit a markedly nonadditive enhancement with respect to the corresponding additive approximation. The specific case of a planar cavity-a relevant configuration for many experiments-is calculated, showing an enhancement of about one order of magnitude. This and similar configurations are of significant potential interest for future measurements that aim to detect the drag force.
