Correlation energy and spin polarization in the 2D electron gas

Nematic Metal in a Multivalley Electron Gas: Variational Monte Carlo Analysis and Application to AlAs

The two-dimensional electron gas is of fundamental importance in quantum many-body physics. We study a minimal extension of this model with C_{4} (as opposed to full rotational) symmetry and an electronic dispersion with two valleys with anisotropic effective masses. Electrons in our model interact via Coulomb repulsion, screened by distant metallic gates. Using variational Monte Carlo simulations, we find a broad intermediate range of densities with a metallic valley-polarized, spin-unpolarized ground state. Our results are of direct relevance to the recently discovered "nematic" state in AlAs quantum wells. For the effective mass anisotropy relevant to this system, m_{x}/m_{y}≈5.2, we obtain a transition from an anisotropic metal to a valley-polarized metal at r_{s}≈12 (where r_{s} is the dimensionless Wigner-Seitz radius). At still lower densities, we find a (possibly metastable) valley and spin-polarized state with a reduced electronic anisotropy.

Signatures of Correlated Defects in an Ultraclean Wigner Crystal in the Extreme Quantum Limit

Low-disorder two-dimensional electron systems in the presence of a strong, perpendicular magnetic field terminate at very small Landau level filling factors in a Wigner crystal (WC), where the electrons form an ordered array to minimize the Coulomb repulsion. The nature of this exotic, many-body, quantum phase is yet to be fully understood and experimentally revealed. Here we probe one of WC's most fundamental parameters, namely, the energy gap that determines its low-temperature conductivity, in record mobility, ultrahigh-purity, two-dimensional electrons confined to GaAs quantum wells. The WC domains in these samples contain ≃1000 electrons. The measured gaps are a factor of three larger than previously reported for lower quality samples, and agree remarkably well with values predicted for the lowest-energy, intrinsic, hypercorrelated bubble defects in a WC made of flux-electron composite fermions, rather than bare electrons. The agreement is particularly noteworthy, given that the calculations are done for disorder-free composite fermion WCs, and there are no adjustable parameters. The results reflect the exceptionally high quality of the samples, and suggest that composite fermion WCs are indeed more stable compared to their electron counterparts.

Stoner Ferromagnetism in a Momentum-Confined Interacting 2D Electron Gas

In this work we investigate the ground state of a momentum-confined interacting 2D electron gas, a momentum-space analog of an infinite quantum well. The study is performed by combining analytical results with a numerical exact diagonalization procedure. We find a ferromagnetic ground state near a particular electron density and for a range of effective electron (or hole) masses. We argue that this observation may be relevant to the generalized Stoner ferromagnetism recently observed in multilayer graphene systems. The collective magnon excitations exhibit a linear dispersion, which originates from a diverging spin stiffness.

Metal-Insulator Transition in a Semiconductor Heterobilayer Model

Transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices provide an exciting new platform for exploring and understanding a variety of phases of matter. The moiré continuum Hamiltonian, of two-dimensional jellium in a modulating potential, provides a fundamental model for such systems. Accurate computations with this model are essential for interpreting experimental observations and making predictions for future explorations. In this work, we combine two complementary quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo, to study the ground state of this Hamiltonian. We observe a metal-insulator transition between a paramagnet and a 120° Néel ordered state as the moiré potential depth and the interaction strength are varied. We find significant differences from existing results by Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalization studies. In addition, we benchmark density-functional theory, and suggest an optimal hybrid functional which best approximates our QMC results.

Spin independence of the strongly enhanced effective mass in ultra-clean SiGe/Si/SiGe two-dimensional electron system

The effective mass at the Fermi level is measured in the strongly interacting two-dimensional (2D) electron system in ultra-clean SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum wells in the low-temperature limit in tilted magnetic fields. At low electron densities, the effective mass is found to be strongly enhanced and independent of the degree of spin polarization, which indicates that the mass enhancement is not related to the electrons' spins. The observed effect turns out to be universal for silicon-based 2D electron systems, regardless of random potential, and cannot be explained by existing theories.

Eliminating Artificial Boundary Conditions in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Using Fourier Contour Deformation

We present an efficient method for propagating the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations in free space, based on the recently introduced Fourier contour deformation (FCD) approach. For potentials which are constant outside a bounded domain, FCD yields a high-order accurate numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation directly in free space, without the need for artificial boundary conditions. Of the many existing artificial boundary condition schemes, FCD is most similar to an exact nonlocal transparent boundary condition, but it works directly on Cartesian grids in any dimension, and runs on top of the fast Fourier transform rather than fast algorithms for the application of nonlocal history integral operators. We adapt FCD to time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), and describe a simple algorithm to smoothly and automatically truncate long-range Coulomb-like potentials to a time-dependent constant outside of a bounded domain of interest, so that FCD can be used. This approach eliminates errors originating from the use of artificial boundary conditions, leaving only the error of the potential truncation, which is controlled and can be systematically reduced. The method enables accurate simulations of ultrastrong nonlinear electronic processes in molecular complexes in which the interference between bound and continuum states is of paramount importance. We demonstrate results for many-electron TDDFT calculations of absorption and strong field photoelectron spectra for one and two-dimensional models, and observe a significant reduction in the size of the computational domain required to achieve high quality results, as compared with the popular method of complex absorbing potentials.

Interstitial-Induced Ferromagnetism in a Two-Dimensional Wigner Crystal

The two-dimensional Wigner crystal (WC) occurs in the strongly interacting regime (r_{s}≫1) of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The magnetism of a pure WC is determined by tunneling processes that induce multispin ring-exchange interactions, resulting in fully polarized ferromagnetism for large enough r_{s}. Recently, Hossain et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 117, 32244 (2020)PNASA60027-842410.1073/pnas.2018248117] reported the occurrence of a fully polarized ferromagnetic insulator at r_{s}≳35 in an AlAs quantum well, but at temperatures orders of magnitude larger than the predicted exchange energies for the pure WC. Here, we analyze the large r_{s} dynamics of an interstitial defect in the WC, and show that it produces local ferromagnetism with much higher energy scales. Three hopping processes are dominant, which favor a large, fully polarized ferromagnetic polaron. Based on the above results, we speculate concerning the phenomenology of the magnetism near the metal-insulator transition of the 2DEG.

Quantum electron liquid and its possible phase transition

Purely quantum electron systems exhibit intriguing correlated electronic phases by virtue of quantum fluctuations in addition to electron-electron interactions. To realize such quantum electron systems, a key ingredient is dense electrons decoupled from other degrees of freedom. Here, we report the discovery of a pure quantum electron liquid that spreads up to ~3 Å in a vacuum on the surface of an electride crystal. Its extremely high electron density and weak hybridization with buried atomic orbitals show the quantum and pure nature of the electrons, which exhibit a polarized liquid phase, as demonstrated by our spin-dependent measurement. Furthermore, upon enhancing the electron correlation strength, the dynamics of the quantum electrons change to that of a non-Fermi liquid along with an anomalous band deformation, suggestive of a transition to a hexatic liquid crystal phase. Our findings develop the frontier of quantum electron systems and serve as a platform for exploring correlated electronic phases in a pure fashion.

Anisotropic Two-Dimensional Disordered Wigner Solid

The interplay between the Fermi sea anisotropy, electron-electron interaction, and localization phenomena can give rise to exotic many-body phases. An exciting example is an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Wigner solid (WS), where electrons form an ordered array with an anisotropic lattice structure. Such a state has eluded experiments up to now as its realization is extremely demanding: First, a WS entails very low densities where the Coulomb interaction dominates over the kinetic (Fermi) energy. Attaining such low densities while keeping the disorder low is very challenging. Second, the low-density requirement has to be fulfilled in a material that hosts an anisotropic Fermi sea. Here, we report transport measurements in a clean (low-disorder) 2D electron system with anisotropic effective mass and Fermi sea. The data reveal that at extremely low electron densities, when the r_{s} parameter, the ratio of the Coulomb to the Fermi energy, exceeds ≃38, the current-voltage characteristics become strongly nonlinear at small dc biases. Several key features of the nonlinear characteristics, including their anisotropic voltage thresholds, are consistent with the formation of a disordered, anisotropic WS pinned by the ubiquitous disorder potential.

The Magnetic Genome of Two-Dimensional van der Waals Materials

Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as one of the most promising areas in condensed matter research, with many exciting emerging properties and significant potential for applications ranging from topological magnonics to low-power spintronics, quantum computing, and optical communications. In the brief time after their discovery, 2D magnets have blossomed into a rich area for investigation, where fundamental concepts in magnetism are challenged by the behavior of spins that can develop at the single layer limit. However, much effort is still needed in multiple fronts before 2D magnets can be routinely used for practical implementations. In this comprehensive review, prominent authors with expertise in complementary fields of 2D magnetism (i.e., synthesis, device engineering, magneto-optics, imaging, transport, mechanics, spin excitations, and theory and simulations) have joined together to provide a genome of current knowledge and a guideline for future developments in 2D magnetic materials research.

Competing correlated states around the zero-field Wigner crystallization transition of electrons in two dimensions

The competition between kinetic energy and Coulomb interactions in electronic systems leads to complex many-body ground states with competing orders. Here we present zinc oxide-based two-dimensional electron systems as a high-mobility system to study the low-temperature phases of strongly interacting electrons. An analysis of the electronic transport provides evidence for competing correlated metallic and insulating states with varying degrees of spin polarization. Some features bear quantitative resemblance to quantum Monte Carlo simulation results, including the transition point from the paramagnetic Fermi liquid to Wigner crystal and the absence of a Stoner transition. At very low temperatures, we resolve a non-monotonic spin polarizability of electrons across the phase transition, pointing towards a low spin phase of electrons, and a two-order-of-magnitude positive magnetoresistance that is challenging to understand within traditional metallic transport paradigms. This work establishes zinc oxide as a platform for studying strongly correlated electrons in two dimensions.

Many-Body Exciton and Intervalley Correlations in Heavily Electron-Doped WSe2 Monolayers

In monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, many-body correlations can manifest in optical spectra when electron-hole pairs (excitons) are photoexcited into a 2D Fermi sea of mobile carriers. At low carrier densities, the formation of charged excitons (X^±) is well documented. However, in WSe₂ monolayers, an additional absorption resonance, often called X^-', emerges at high electron density. Its origin is not understood. Here, we investigate the X^-' state via polarized absorption spectroscopy of gated WSe₂ monolayers in magnetic fields to 60T. Field-induced filling and emptying of the lowest optically active Landau level in the K' valley causes repeated quenching of the corresponding optical absorption. Surprisingly, these quenchings are accompanied by absorption changes to higher Landau levels in both K' and K valleys, which are unoccupied. These results cannot be reconciled within a single-particle picture, and demonstrate the many-body nature and intervalley correlations of the X^-' quasiparticle state.

Spontaneous Valley Polarization of Itinerant Electrons

Memory or transistor devices based on an electron's spin rather than its charge degree of freedom offer certain distinct advantages and comprise a cornerstone of spintronics. Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new field, valleytronics, which seeks to exploit an electron's valley index rather than its spin. An important component in this quest would be the ability to control the valley index in a convenient fashion. Here we show that the valley polarization can be switched from zero to 1 by a small reduction in density, simply tuned by a gate bias, in a two-dimensional electron system. This phenomenon, which is akin to Bloch spin ferromagnetism, arises fundamentally as a result of electron-electron interaction in an itinerant, dilute electron system. Essentially, the kinetic energy favors an equal distribution of electrons over the available valleys, whereas the interaction between electrons prefers single-valley occupancy below a critical density. The gate-bias-tuned transition we observe is accompanied by a sudden, twofold change in sample resistance, making the phenomenon of interest for potential valleytronic transistor device applications. Our observation constitutes a quintessential demonstration of valleytronics in a very simple experiment.

Wigner Crystallization of Electrons in a One-Dimensional Lattice: A Condensation in the Space of States

We study the ground state of a system of spinless electrons interacting through a screened Coulomb potential in a lattice ring. By using analytical arguments, we show that, when the effective interaction compares with the kinetic energy, the system forms a Wigner crystal undergoing a first-order quantum phase transition. This transition is a condensation in the space of the states and belongs to the class of quantum phase transitions discussed in [M. Ostilli and C. Presilla, J. Phys. A 54, 055005 (2021).JPAMB51751-811310.1088/1751-8121/aba144]. The transition takes place at a critical value r_{s}_{c} of the usual dimensionless parameter r_{s} (radius of the volume available to each electron divided by effective Bohr radius) for which we are able to provide rigorous lower and upper bounds. For large screening length these bounds can be expressed in a closed analytical form. Demanding Monte Carlo simulations allow to estimate r_{s}_{c}≃2.3±0.2 at lattice filling 3/10 and screening length 10 lattice constants. This value is well within the rigorous bounds 0.7≤r_{s}_{c}≤4.3. Finally, we show that if screening is removed after the thermodynamic limit has been taken, r_{s}_{c} tends to zero. In contrast, in a bare unscreened Coulomb potential, Wigner crystallization always takes place as a smooth crossover, not as a quantum phase transition.

Deformation of the Fermi surface of a spinless two-dimensional electron gas in presence of an anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential

We consider the stability of the circular Fermi surface of a two-dimensional electron gas system against an elliptical deformation induced by an anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential. We use the jellium approximation for the neutralizing background and treat the electrons as fully spin-polarized (spinless) particles with a constant isotropic (effective) mass. The anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential considered in this work is inspired from studies of two-dimensional electron gas systems in the quantum Hall regime. We use a Hartree-Fock procedure to obtain analytical results for two special Fermi liquid quantum electronic phases. The first one corresponds to a system with circular Fermi surface while the second one corresponds to a liquid anisotropic phase with a specific elliptical deformation of the Fermi surface that gives rise to the lowest possible potential energy of the system. The results obtained suggest that, for the most general situations, neither of these two Fermi liquid phases represent the lowest energy state of the system within the framework of the family of states considered in this work. The lowest energy phase is one with an optimal elliptical deformation whose specific value is determined by a complex interplay of many factors including the density of the system.

Observation of spontaneous ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional electron system

What are the ground states of an interacting, low-density electron system? In the absence of disorder, it has long been expected that as the electron density is lowered, the exchange energy gained by aligning the electron spins should exceed the enhancement in the kinetic (Fermi) energy, leading to a (Bloch) ferromagnetic transition. At even lower densities, another transition to a (Wigner) solid, an ordered array of electrons, should occur. Experimental access to these regimes, however, has been limited because of the absence of a material platform that supports an electron system with very high quality (low disorder) and low density simultaneously. Here we explore the ground states of interacting electrons in an exceptionally clean, two-dimensional electron system confined to a modulation-doped AlAs quantum well. The large electron effective mass in this system allows us to reach very large values of the interaction parameter [Formula: see text], defined as the ratio of the Coulomb to Fermi energies. As we lower the electron density via gate bias, we find a sequence of phases, qualitatively consistent with the above scenario: a paramagnetic phase at large densities, a spontaneous transition to a ferromagnetic state when [Formula: see text] surpasses 35, and then a phase with strongly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, suggestive of a pinned Wigner solid, when [Formula: see text] exceeds [Formula: see text] However, our sample makes a transition to an insulating state at [Formula: see text], preceding the onset of the spontaneous ferromagnetism, implying that besides interaction, the role of disorder must also be taken into account in understanding the different phases of a realistic dilute electron system.

Spontaneous Valley Polarization of Interacting Carriers in a Monolayer Semiconductor

We report magnetoabsorption spectroscopy of gated WSe_{2} monolayers in high magnetic fields up to 60 T. When doped with a 2D Fermi sea of mobile holes, well-resolved sequences of optical transitions are observed in both σ^{±} circular polarizations, which unambiguously and separately indicate the number of filled Landau levels (LLs) in both K and K^{'} valleys. This reveals the interaction-enhanced valley Zeeman energy, which is found to be highly tunable with hole density p. We exploit this tunability to align the LLs in K and K^{'}, and find that the 2D hole gas becomes unstable against small changes in LL filling and can spontaneously valley polarize. These results cannot be understood within a single-particle picture, highlighting the importance of exchange interactions in determining the ground state of 2D carriers in monolayer semiconductors.

Kohn-Sham equations with functionals from the strictly-correlated regime: investigation with a spectral renormalization method

We re-adapt a spectral renormalization method, introduced in nonlinear optics, to solve the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations of density functional theory, with a focus on functionals based on the strictly-correlated electrons (SCE) regime, which are particularly challenging to converge. Important aspects of the method are: (i) the eigenvalues and the density are computed simultaneously; (ii) it converges using randomized initial guesses; (iii) easy to implement. Using this method we could converge for the first time the Kohn-Sham equations with functionals that include the next leading term in the strong-interaction limit of density functional theory, the so called zero-point energy (ZPE) functional as well as with an interaction-strength-interpolation functional that includes both the exact SCE and ZPE terms. This work is the first building block for future studies on quantum systems confined in low dimensions with different statistics and long-range repulsions, such as localization properties of fermions and bosons with strong long-range repulsive interactions in the presence of a random external potential.

Itinerant-Electron Magnetism: The Importance of Many-Body Correlations

Do electrons become ferromagnetic just because of their repulsive Coulomb interaction? Our calculations on the three-dimensional electron gas imply that itinerant ferromagnetism of delocalized electrons without lattice and band structure, the most basic model considered by Stoner, is suppressed due to many-body correlations as speculated already by Wigner, and a possible ferromagnetic transition lowering the density is precluded by the formation of the Wigner crystal.

Improved transition metal surface energies from a generalized gradient approximation developed for quasi two-dimensional systems

Nonuniform density scaling in the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) regime is an important and challenging aspect of the density functional theory. Semilocal exchange-correlation energy functionals, developed by solving the dimensional crossover criterion in the quasi-2D regime, have great theoretical and practical importance. However, the only semilocal generalized gradient approximation (GGA) that has been designed to satisfy this criterion is the Q2D-GGA [L. Chiodo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 126402 (2012)]. Here, we establish the applicability, broadness, and accuracy of the Q2D-GGA functional by performing an extensive assessment of this functional for transition metal surface energies. The important characteristic of the surface density localization and oscillation due to the rearrangement of the d electrons is also shown for different metal surfaces.

Landau-Quantized Excitonic Absorption and Luminescence in a Monolayer Valley Semiconductor

We investigate Landau-quantized excitonic absorption and luminescence of monolayer WSe_{2} under magnetic field. We observe gate-dependent quantum oscillations in the bright exciton and trions (or exciton polarons) as well as the dark trions and their phonon replicas. Our results reveal spin- and valley-polarized Landau levels (LLs) with filling factors n=+0, +1 in the bottom conduction band and n=-0 to -6 in the top valence band, including the Berry-curvature-induced n=±0 LLs of massive Dirac fermions. The LL filling produces periodic plateaus in the exciton energy shift accompanied by sharp oscillations in the exciton absorption width and magnitude. This peculiar exciton behavior can be simulated by semiempirical calculations. The experimentally deduced g factors of the conduction band (g∼2.5) and valence band (g∼15) exceed those predicted in a single-particle model (g=1.5, 5.5, respectively). Such g-factor enhancement implies strong many-body interactions in gated monolayer WSe_{2}. The complex interplay between Landau quantization, excitonic effects, and many-body interactions makes monolayer WSe_{2} a promising platform to explore novel correlated quantum phenomena.

Adiabatic connection in density functional theory in two-dimensions: A semi-analytic wavefunction based study for two-electron atomic systems

This work focuses on studying the adiabatic-connection in density functional theory in two dimensions. It employs a recently developed accurate form of wavefunction for two-electron systems. The explicit semianalytic form of the wavefunction makes it possible to calculate ground state wavefunctions, energies, densities, and the resulting properties for the scaled Coulomb interaction between the electrons at fixed density accurately. The results so obtained for the correlation energies are then used as the reference values for studying the performance of two-dimensional correlation energy functionals.

Absence of Interlayer Tunnel Coupling of K-Valley Electrons in Bilayer MoS_{2}

In Bernal stacked bilayer graphene interlayer coupling significantly affects the electronic band structure compared to monolayer graphene. Here we present magnetotransport experiments on high-quality n-doped bilayer MoS_{2}. By measuring the evolution of the Landau levels as a function of electron density and applied magnetic field we are able to investigate the occupation of conduction band states, the interlayer coupling in pristine bilayer MoS_{2}, and how these effects are governed by electron-electron interactions. We find that the two layers of the bilayer MoS_{2} behave as two independent electronic systems where a twofold Landau level's degeneracy is observed for each MoS_{2} layer. At the onset of the population of the bottom MoS_{2} layer we observe a large negative compressibility caused by the exchange interaction. These observations, enabled by the high electronic quality of our samples, demonstrate weak interlayer tunnel coupling but strong interlayer electrostatic coupling in pristine bilayer MoS_{2}. The conclusions from the experiments may be relevant also to other transition metal dichalcogenide materials.

Spin-polarized electrons in monolayer MoS2

Coulomb interactions are crucial in determining the ground state of an ideal two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the limit of low electron densities¹. In this regime, Coulomb interactions dominate over single-particle phase-space filling. In silicon and gallium arsenide, electrons are typically localized at these low densities. In contrast, in transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), Coulomb correlations in a 2DEG can be anticipated at experimentally relevant electron densities. Here, we investigate a 2DEG in a gated monolayer of the TMD molybdenum disulfide². We measure the optical susceptibility, a probe of the 2DEG which is local, minimally invasive and spin selective³. In a magnetic field of 9.0 T and at electron concentrations up to n ≃ 5 × 10¹² cm^-2, we present evidence that the ground state is spin-polarized. Out of the four available conduction bands^4,5, only two are occupied. These two bands have the same spin but different valley quantum numbers. Our results suggest that only two bands are occupied even in the absence of a magnetic field. The spin polarization increases with decreasing 2DEG density, suggesting that Coulomb interactions are a key aspect of the symmetry breaking. We propose that exchange couplings align the spins⁶. The Bohr radius is so small⁷ that even electrons located far apart in phase-space interact with each other⁶.

Recent Developments in the Field of the Metal-Insulator Transition in Two Dimensions

We review the latest developments in the field of the metal-insulator transition in strongly-correlated two-dimensional electron systems. Particular attention is given to recent discoveries of a sliding quantum electron solid and interaction-induced spectrum flattening at the Fermi level in high-quality silicon-based structures.

Interactions and Magnetotransport through Spin-Valley Coupled Landau Levels in Monolayer MoS_{2}

The strong spin-orbit coupling and the broken inversion symmetry in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides results in spin-valley coupled band structures. Such a band structure leads to novel applications in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics. Density functional theory calculations as well as optical experiments have focused on spin-valley coupling in the valence band. Here we present magnetotransport experiments on high-quality n-type monolayer molybdenum disulphide (MoS_{2}) samples, displaying highly resolved Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at magnetic fields as low as 2 T. We find the effective mass 0.7m_{e}, about twice as large as theoretically predicted and almost independent of magnetic field and carrier density. We further detect the occupation of the second spin-orbit split band at an energy of about 15 meV, i.e., about a factor of 5 larger than predicted. In addition, we demonstrate an intricate Landau level spectrum arising from a complex interplay between a density-dependent Zeeman splitting and spin- and valley-split Landau levels. These observations, enabled by the high electronic quality of our samples, testify to the importance of interaction effects in the conduction band of monolayer MoS_{2}.

Quantum vortex melting and superconductor insulator transition in a 2D Josephson junction array in a perpendicular magnetic field via diffusion Monte Carlo

In this study, we simulated a quantum rotor model describing a Josephson junction array (JJA) in the phase representation at zero temperature in a perpendicular magnetic field [Formula: see text] (in units of [Formula: see text]) on a [Formula: see text] square lattice with spacing a for [Formula: see text]. The superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is tuned by the ratio of charging energy to Josephson coupling, U/J. Abrupt drops in the magnetization values were observed in the bigger lattices at certain values of B and U/J caused by the formation of vortices. Increasing U/J at a fixed B field causes quantum vortex melting. The magnetization drops to zero around [Formula: see text] indicating SIT. For B  =  0.1 the SIT occurs without an intermediate vortex state and the magnetization scales as [Formula: see text], whereas for B  =  0.4 the scaling is [Formula: see text] during the vortex melting. For B between 0.1 and 0.4 the scaling is not clear. We used the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method with a guiding wavefunction optimized using the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. The ground state energy is calculated easily in DMC and its error estimates were generally smaller than [Formula: see text], both with and without the guiding wavefunction. Quantities like magnetization and vorticity that do not commute with the Hamiltonian were calculated using an efficient forward walking algorithm. Their estimates are affected severely in absence of the guiding wavefunction. With the guiding wavefunction, errors for the magnetization were generally less than [Formula: see text] and going up to [Formula: see text] percent around the phase transition from the Meissner to the vortex state, and without the guiding wavefunction errors were generally higher than [Formula: see text] and going up to [Formula: see text] around the critical point.

Transport evidence for a sliding two-dimensional quantum electron solid

Ignited by the discovery of the metal-insulator transition, the behaviour of low-disorder two-dimensional (2D) electron systems is currently the focus of a great deal of attention. In the strongly interacting limit, electrons are expected to crystallize into a quantum Wigner crystal, but no definitive evidence for this effect has been obtained despite much experimental effort over the years. Here, studying the insulating state of a 2D electron system in silicon, we have found two-threshold voltage-current characteristics with a dramatic increase in noise between the two threshold voltages. This behaviour cannot be described within existing traditional models. On the other hand, it is strikingly similar to that observed for the collective depinning of the vortex lattice in type-II superconductors. Adapting the model used for vortexes to the case of an electron solid yields good agreement with our experimental results, favouring the quantum electron solid as the origin of the low-density state.

A review of the quantum Hall effects in MgZnO/ZnO heterostructures

This review visits recent experimental efforts on high mobility two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) hosted at the Mg _x Zn[Formula: see text]O/ZnO heterointerface. We begin with the growth of these samples, and highlight the key characteristics of ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy required for their production. The transport characteristics of these structures are found to rival that of traditional semiconductor material systems, as signified by the high electron mobility ([Formula: see text] cm² Vs^-1) and rich quantum Hall features. Owing to a large effective mass and small dielectric constant, interaction effects are an order of magnitude stronger in comparison with the well studied GaAs-based 2DES. The strong correlation physics results in robust Fermi-liquid renormalization of the effective mass and spin susceptibility of carriers, which in turn dictates the parameter space for the quantum Hall effect. Finally, we explore the quantum Hall effect with a particular emphasis on the spin degree of freedom of carriers, and how their large spin splitting allows control of the ground states encountered at ultra-low temperatures within the fractional quantum Hall regime. We discuss in detail the physics of even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states, whose observation and underlying character remain elusive and exotic.

Spin-helix Larmor mode

A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with equal-strength Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling sustains persistent helical spin-wave states, which have remarkably long lifetimes. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, there exist single-particle excitations that have the character of propagating helical spin waves. For magnon-like collective excitations, the spin-helix texture reemerges as a robust feature, giving rise to a decoupling of spin-orbit and electronic many-body effects. We prove that the resulting spin-flip wave dispersion is the same as in a magnetized 2DEG without spin-orbit coupling, apart from a shift by the spin-helix wave vector. The precessional mode about the persistent spin-helix state is shown to have an energy given by the bare Zeeman splitting, in analogy with Larmor’s theorem. We also discuss ways to observe the spin-helix Larmor mode experimentally.

Strongly Interaction-Enhanced Valley Magnetic Response in Monolayer WSe_{2}

We measure the doping dependence of the valley Zeeman splitting of the fundamental optical transitions in monolayer WSe_{2} under an out-of-plane magnetic field by optical reflection contrast and photoluminescence spectroscopy. A nonlinear valley Zeeman effect, correlated with an over fourfold enhancement in the g factor, is observed. The effect occurs when the Fermi level crosses the spin-split upper conduction band, corresponding to a change of the spin-valley degeneracy from two to four. The enhancement increases and shows no sign of saturation as the sample temperature decreases. Our result demonstrates the importance of the Coulomb interactions in the valley magnetic response of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors.

Exploration of near the origin and the asymptotic behaviors of the Kohn-Sham kinetic energy density for two-dimensional quantum dot systems with parabolic confinement

The behaviors of the positive definite Kohn-Sham kinetic energy density near the origin and at the asymptotic region play a major role in designing meta-generalized gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) for exchange in low-dimensional quantum systems. It is shown that near the origin of the parabolic quantum dot, the Kohn-Sham kinetic energy differs from its von Weizsäcker counterpart due to the p orbital contributions, whereas in the asymptotic region, the difference between the above two kinetic energy densities goes as ∼ρ(r)r². All these behaviors have been explored using the two-dimensional isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator as a test case. Several meta-GGA ingredients are then studied by making use of the above findings. Also, the asymptotic conditions for the exchange energy density and the potential at the meta-GGA level are proposed using the corresponding behaviors of the two kinetic energy densities.

Inhomogeneous phases in coupled electron-hole bilayer graphene sheets: Charge Density Waves and Coupled Wigner Crystals

Recently proposed accurate correlation energies are used to determine the phase diagram of strongly coupled electron-hole graphene bilayers. The control parameters of the phase diagram are the charge carrier density and the insulating barrier thickness separating the bilayers. In addition to the electron-hole superfluid phase we find two new inhomogeneous ground states, a one dimensional charge density wave phase and a coupled electron-hole Wigner crystal. The elementary crystal structure of bilayer graphene plays no role in generating these new quantum phases, which are completely determined by the electrons and holes interacting through the Coulomb interaction. The experimental parameters for the new phases lie within attainable ranges and therefore coupled electron-hole bilayer graphene presents itself as an experimental system where novel emergent many-body phases can be realized.

Density-Dependent Quantum Hall States and Zeeman Splitting in Monolayer and Bilayer WSe_{2}

We report a study of the quantum Hall states (QHS) of holes in mono- and bilayer WSe_{2}. The QHS sequence transitions between predominantly even and predominantly odd filling factors as the hole density is tuned in the range 1.6-12×10^{12}  cm^{-2}. Measurements in tilted magnetic fields reveal an insensitivity of the QHS to the in-plane magnetic field, evincing that the hole spin is locked perpendicular to the WSe_{2} plane. Furthermore, the QHS sequence is insensitive to an applied electric field. These observations imply that the QHS sequence is controlled by the Zeeman-to-cyclotron energy ratio, which remains constant as a function of perpendicular magnetic field at a fixed carrier density, but changes as a function of density due to strong electron-electron interaction.

Padé resummation of many-body perturbation theories

In a typical scenario the diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory generates asymptotic series. Despite non-convergence, the asymptotic expansions are useful when truncated to a finite number of terms. This is the reason for the popularity of leading-order methods such as the GW approximation in condensed matter, molecular and atomic physics. Appropriate truncation order required for the accurate description of strongly correlated materials is, however, not known a priori. Here an efficient method based on the Padé approximation is introduced for the regularization of perturbative series allowing to perform higher-order self-consistent calculations and to make quantitative predictions on the convergence of many-body perturbation theories. The theory is extended towards excited states where the Wick theorem is not directly applicable. Focusing on the plasmon-assisted photoemission from graphene, we treat diagrammatically electrons coupled to the excited state plasmons and predict new spectral features that can be observed in the time-resolved measurements.

Spin-Orbit Twisted Spin Waves: Group Velocity Control

We present a theoretical and experimental study of the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Coulomb interaction, and motion of conduction electrons in a magnetized two-dimensional electron gas. Via a transformation of the many-body Hamiltonian we introduce the concept of spin-orbit twisted spin waves, whose energy dispersions and damping rates are obtained by a simple wave-vector shift of the spin waves without SOC. These theoretical predictions are validated by Raman scattering measurements. With optical gating of the density, we vary the strength of the SOC to alter the group velocity of the spin wave. The findings presented here differ from that of spin systems subject to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our results pave the way for novel applications in spin-wave routing devices and for the realization of lenses for spin waves.

Finite-size effects and interactions in artificial graphene formed by repulsive scatterers

We carry out a numerical real-space study on electrons confined in a two-dimensional triangular lattice of repulsive scattering centres. The system represents a qualitative model of molecular graphene, where the electron gas is confined between the scattering molecules in a hexagonal configuration. Our main interest is, on one hand, in the comparability of a finite system (flake) and a fully periodic one, and, on the other hand, in the role of the Coulombic electron-electron interactions and the relative strength of the scattering centres. Our real-space study shows in detail how the density of states of the fully periodic system-containing the Dirac point-is gradually formed as the size of the flake is increased. Good qualitative agreement with the experimental density of states is obtained. Our study confirms the minor role of the electron-electron interactions with selected system parameters, and shows in detail that large scattering amplitudes are required to obtain a distinctive Dirac point in the density of states.

Magnetoluminescence and valley polarized state of a two-dimensional electron gas in WS2 monolayers

Materials often exhibit fundamentally new phenomena in reduced dimensions that potentially lead to novel applications. This is true for single-layer, two-dimensional semiconductor crystals of transition-metal dichalcogenides, MX2 (M = Mo, W and X = S, Se). They exhibit direct bandgaps with energies in the visible region at the two non-equivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone. This makes them suitable for optoelectronic applications that range from light-emitting diodes to light harvesting and light sensors, and to valleytronics. Here, we report the results of a magnetoluminescence study of WS2 single-layer crystals in which the strong spin-orbit interaction additionally locks the valley and spin degrees of freedom. The recombination of the negatively charged exciton in the presence of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is found to be circularly polarized at zero magnetic field despite being excited with unpolarized light, which indicates that the existence of a valley polarized 2DEG is caused by valley and spin locking and strong electron-electron interactions.

Valley polarization assisted spin polarization in two dimensions

Valleytronics is rapidly emerging as an exciting area of basic and applied research. In two-dimensional systems, valley polarization can dramatically modify physical properties through electron-electron interactions as demonstrated by such phenomena as the fractional quantum Hall effect and the metal-insulator transition. Here, we address the electrons' spin alignment in a magnetic field in silicon-on-insulator quantum wells under valley polarization. In stark contrast to expectations from a non-interacting model, we show experimentally that less magnetic field can be required to fully spin polarize a valley-polarized system than a valley-degenerate one. Furthermore, we show that these observations are quantitatively described by parameter-free ab initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We interpret the results as a manifestation of the greater stability of the spin- and valley-degenerate system against ferromagnetic instability and Wigner crystalization, which in turn suggests the existence of a new strongly correlated electron liquid at low electron densities.

Universal increase in the superconducting critical temperature of two-dimensional semiconductors at low doping by the electron-electron interaction

In two-dimensional multivalley semiconductors, at low doping, even a moderate electron-electron interaction enhances the response to any perturbation inducing a valley polarization. If the valley polarization is due to the electron-phonon coupling, the electron-electron interaction results in an enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature. By performing first-principles calculations beyond density functional theory, we prove that this effect accounts for the unconventional doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (T(c)) and of the magnetic susceptibility measured in Li(x)ZrNCI. Finally, we discuss what are the conditions for a maximal T(c) enhancement in weakly doped two-dimensional semiconductors.

Construction of the B88 Exchange-Energy Functional in Two Dimensions

We construct a generalized-gradient approximation for the exchange-energy density of finite two-dimensional systems. Guided by nonempirical principles, we include the proper small-gradient limit and the proper tail for the exchange-hole potential. The observed performance is superior to that of the two-dimensional local-density approximation, which underlines the usefulness of the approach in practical applications.

Scaling in the correlation energies of two-dimensional artificial atoms

We find an unexpected scaling in the correlation energy of artificial atoms, i.e., harmonically confined two-dimensional quantum dots. The scaling relation is found through extensive numerical examinations including Hartree-Fock, variational quantum Monte Carlo, density functional, and full configuration interaction calculations. We show that the correlation energy, i.e., the true ground-state total energy minus the Hartree-Fock total energy, follows a simple function of the Coulomb energy, confinement strength and number of electrons. We find an analytic expression for this function, as well as for the correlation energy per particle and for the ratio between the correlation and total energies. Our tests for independent diffusion Monte Carlo and coupled-cluster results for quantum dots-including open-shell data-confirm the generality of the scaling obtained. As the scaling also applies well to ≳100 electrons, our results give interesting prospects for the development of correlation functionals within density functional theory.

Excitons and biexcitons in symmetric electron-hole bilayers

Symmetric electron-hole bilayer systems have been studied at zero temperature using the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo method. A flexible trial wave function is used that can describe fluid, excitonic, and biexcitonic phases. We calculate condensate fractions and pair correlation functions for a large number of densities r(s) and layer separations d. At small d we find a one-component fluid phase, an excitonic fluid phase, and a biexcitonic fluid phase, and the transitions among them appear to be continuous. At d=0, excitons appear to survive down to about r(s)=0.5 a.u., and biexcitons form at r(s)>2.5 a.u.
