A novel X-ray diffractometer for studies of liquid-liquid interfaces

Understanding and controlling the structure and function of liquid interfaces is a constant challenge in biology, nanoscience and nanotechnology, with applications ranging from molecular electronics to controlled drug release. X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence diffraction provide invaluable probes for studying the atomic scale structure at liquid-air interfaces. The new time-resolved laser system at the LISA liquid diffractometer situated at beamline P08 at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source in Hamburg provides a laser pump with X-ray probe. The femtosecond laser combined with the LISA diffractometer allows unique opportunities to investigate photo-induced structural changes at liquid interfaces on the pico- and nanosecond time scales with pump-probe techniques. A time resolution of 38 ps has been achieved and verified with Bi. First experiments include laser-induced effects on salt solutions and liquid mercury surfaces with static and varied time scales measurements showing the proof of concept for investigations at liquid surfaces.

Reconstructing the reflectivity of liquid surfaces from grazing incidence X-ray off-specular scattering data

The capillary wave model of a liquid surface predicts both the X-ray specular reflection and the diffuse scattering around it. A quantitative method is presented to obtain the X-ray reflectivity (XRR) from a liquid surface through the diffuse scattering data around the specular reflection measured using a grazing incidence X-ray off-specular scattering (GIXOS) geometry at a fixed horizontal offset angle with respect to the plane of incidence. With this approach the entire Qz -dependent reflectivity profile can be obtained at a single, fixed incident angle. This permits a much faster acquisition of the profile than with conventional reflectometry, where the incident angle must be scanned point by point to obtain a Qz -dependent profile. The XRR derived from the GIXOS-measured diffuse scattering, referred to in this paper as pseudo-reflectivity, provides a larger Qz range compared with the reflectivity measured by conventional reflectometry. Transforming the GIXOS-measured diffuse scattering profile to pseudo-XRR opens up the GIXOS method to widely available specular XRR analysis software tools. Here the GIXOS-derived pseudo-XRR is compared with the XRR measured by specular reflectometry from two simple vapor-liquid interfaces at different surface tension, and from a hexadecyltri-methyl-ammonium bromide monolayer on a water surface. For the simple liquids, excellent agreement (beyond 11 orders of magnitude in signal) is found between the two methods, supporting the approach of using GIXOS-measured diffuse scattering to derive reflectivities. Pseudo-XRR obtained at different horizontal offset angles with respect to the plane of incidence yields indistinguishable results, and this supports the robustness of the GIXOS-XRR approach. The pseudo-XRR method can be extended to soft thin films on a liquid surface, and criteria are established for the applicability of the approach.

Ordering of ionic liquids at a charged sapphire interface: Evolution with cationic chain length

HYPOTHESIS

Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) bulk's molecular layering dominates their structure also at the RTIL/sapphire interface, increasing the layer spacing with the cationic alkyl chain length n. However, the negatively-charged sapphire surface compresses the layers, increases the layering range, and affects the intra-layer structure in yet unknown ways.

EXPERIMENTS

X-ray reflectivity (XR) off the RTIL/sapphire interface, for a broad homologous RTIL series 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide, hitherto unavailable for any RTIL.

FINDINGS

RTIL layers against the sapphire, exhibit two spacings: da and db. da is n-varying, follows the behavior of the bulk spacing but exhibits a downshift, thus showing significant layer compression, and over twofold polar slab thinning. The latter suggests exclusion of anions from the interfacial region due to the negative sapphire charging by x-ray-released electrons. The layering range is larger than the bulk's. db is short and near n-independent, suggesting polar moieties' layering, the coexistence mode of which with the da-spaced layering is unclear. Comparing the present layering with the bulk's and the RTIL/air interface's provides insight into the Coulomb and dispersion interaction balance dominating the RTIL's structure and the impact thereon of the presence of a charged solid interface.

Tripling of the scattering vector range of X-ray reflectivity on liquid surfaces using a double-crystal deflector

The maximum range of perpendicular momentum transfer (q z) has been tripled for X-ray scattering from liquid surfaces when using a double-crystal deflector setup to tilt the incident X-ray beam. This is achieved by employing a higher-energy X-ray beam to access Miller indices of reflecting crystal atomic planes that are three times higher than usual. The deviation from the exact Bragg angle condition induced by misalignment between the X-ray beam axis and the main rotation axis of the double-crystal deflector is calculated, and a fast and straightforward procedure to align them is deduced. An experimental method of measuring scattering intensity along the q z direction on liquid surfaces up to q z = 7 Å-1 is presented, with liquid copper serving as a reference system for benchmarking purposes.

In Situ and Operando X-ray Scattering Methods in Electrochemistry and Electrocatalysis

Electrochemical and electrocatalytic processes are of key importance for the transition to a sustainable energy supply as well as for a wide variety of other technologically relevant fields. Further development of these processes requires in-depth understanding of the atomic, nano, and micro scale structure of the materials and interfaces in electrochemical devices under reaction conditions. We here provide a comprehensive review of in situ and operando studies by X-ray scattering methods, which are powerful and highly versatile tools to provide such understanding. We discuss the application of X-ray scattering to a wide variety of electrochemical systems, ranging from metal and oxide single crystals to nanoparticles and even full devices. We show how structural data on bulk phases, electrode-electrolyte interfaces, and nanoscale morphology can be obtained and describe recent developments that provide highly local information and insight into the composition and electronic structure. These X-ray scattering studies yield insights into the structure in the double layer potential range as well as into the structural evolution during electrocatalytic processes and phase formation reactions, such as nucleation and growth during electrodeposition and dissolution, the formation of passive films, corrosion processes, and the electrochemical intercalation into battery materials.

Ionic Liquid-Induced Assembly of DNA at Air-Water Interface

DNA nanotechnology is the future of many products in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Self-assembly of this negatively charged biopolymer at surfaces and interfaces is an essential step to elaborate its field of applications. In this study, the ionic liquid (IL) monolayer-assisted self-assembly of DNA macromolecules at the air-water interface has been closely monitored by employing various quantitative techniques, namely, surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherms, surface potential, interfacial rheology, and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). The π-A isotherms reveal that the IL 1,3-didecyl 3-methyl imidazolium chloride induces DNA self-assembly at the interface, leading to a thick viscoelastic film. The interfacial rheology exhibits a notable rise in the viscoelastic modulus as the surface pressure increases. The values of storage and loss moduli measured as a function of strain frequency suggest a relaxation frequency that depends on the length of the macromolecule. The XRR measurements indicate a considerable increase in DNA layer thickness at the elevated surface pressures depending on the number of base pairs of the DNA. The results are considered in terms of the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, allowing a quantitative conclusion about the arrangement of DNA strands underneath the monolayer of the ILs at the air-water interface.

Photoinduced bidirectional switching in lipid membranes containing azobenzene glycolipids

Following the reaction of biological membranes to external stimuli reveals fundamental insights into cellular function. Here, self-assembled lipid monolayers act as model membranes containing photoswitchable azobenzene glycolipids for investigating structural response during isomerization by combining Langmuir isotherms with X-ray scattering. Controlled in-situ trans/cis photoswitching of the azobenzene N = N double bond alters the DPPC monolayer structure, causing reproducible changes in surface pressure and layer thickness, indicating monolayer reorientation. Interestingly, for monolayers containing azobenzene glycolipids, along with the expected DPPC phase transitions an additional discontinuity is observed. The associated reorintation represents a crossover point, with the surface pressure and layer thickness changing in opposite directions above and below. This is evidence that the azobenzene glycolipids themselves change orientation within the monolayer. Such behaviour suggests that azobenzene glycolipids can act as a bidirectional switch in DPPC monolayers providing a tool to investigate membrane structure-function relationships in depth.

Role of chemisorbing species in growth at liquid metal-electrolyte interfaces revealed by in situ X-ray scattering

Liquid-liquid interfaces offer intriguing possibilities for nanomaterials growth. Here, fundamental interface-related mechanisms that control the growth behavior in these systems are studied for Pb halide formation at the interface between NaX + PbX₂ (X = F, Cl, Br) and liquid Hg electrodes using in situ X-ray scattering and complementary electrochemical and microscopy measurements. These studies reveal a decisive role of the halide species in nucleation and growth of these compounds. In Cl- and Br-containing solution, deposition starts by rapid formation of well-defined ultrathin (∼7 Å) precursor adlayers, which provide a structural template for the subsequent quasi-epitaxial growth of c-axis oriented Pb(OH)X bulk crystals. In contrast, growth in F-containing solution proceeds by slow formation of a more disordered deposit, resulting in random bulk crystal orientations on the Hg surface. These differences can be assigned to the interface chemistry, specifically halide chemisorption, which steers the formation of these highly textured deposits at the liquid-liquid interface.

Growth at liquid-liquid interfaces differ inherently from that on solids, making it attractive for nanomaterial formation. Here, the authors use X-ray scattering to derive a detailed microscopic picture of lead-halide growth on liquid mercury that reveals the key importance of anion adsorption.

Nondestructive Compression and Fluidization of Phospholipid Monolayers by Gaseous and Aerolized Perfluorocarbons: Promising Substances for Lung Surfactant Treatment

We present a surface-sensitive X-ray scattering study on the influence of gaseous and aerolized perfluorocarbons (FCs) on zwitterionic and anionic phospholipid Langmuir films, which serve as a simplified model system of lung surfactants. It was found that small gaseous FC molecules like F-propane and F-butane penetrate phospholipid monolayers and accumulate between the alkyl chains and form islands. This clustering process can trigger the formation of lipid crystallites at low initial surface pressures. In contrast, the large linear FC F-octyl bromide fluidizes membranes, causing a dissolution of crystalline domains. The bicyclic FC F-decalin accumulates between the alkyl chains of 1,2-dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine but cannot penetrate the more densely packed 1,2-dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid films because of its size. The effects of FCs on lung surfactants are discussed in the framework of currently proposed therapeutic methods for acute respiratory distress syndrome using FC gases, vapor, or aerosol ventilation causing monolayer fluidization effects. This study implies that the highly biocompatible and nontoxic FCs could be beneficial in the treatment of lung diseases with injured nonfunctional lung surfactants in a novel approach for ventilation.

X-ray reflectivity from curved surfaces as illustrated by a graphene layer on molten copper

The X-ray reflectivity technique can provide out-of-plane electron-density profiles of surfaces, interfaces, and thin films, with atomic resolution accuracy. While current methodologies require high surface flatness, this becomes challenging for naturally curved surfaces, particularly for liquid metals, due to the very high surface tension. Here, the development of X-ray reflectivity measurements with beam sizes of a few tens of micrometres on highly curved liquid surfaces using a synchrotron diffractometer equipped with a double crystal beam deflector is presented. The proposed and developed method, which uses a standard reflectivity θ-2θ scan, is successfully applied to study in situ the bare surface of molten copper and molten copper covered by a graphene layer grown in situ by chemical vapor deposition. It was found that the roughness of the bare liquid surface of copper at 1400 K is 1.25 ± 0.10 Å, while the graphene layer is separated from the liquid surface by a distance of 1.55 ± 0.08 Å and has a roughness of 1.26 ± 0.09 Å.

Assessment of nanoparticle immersion depth at liquid interfaces from chemically equivalent macroscopic surfaces

HYPOTHESIS

We test whether the wettability of nanoparticles (NPs) straddling at an air/water surface or oil/water interface can be extrapolated from sessile drop-derived macroscopic contact angles (mCAs) on planar substrates, assuming that both the nanoparticles and the macroscopic substrates are chemically equivalent and feature the same electrokinetic potential.

EXPERIMENTS

Pure silica (SiO₂) and amino-terminated silica (APTES-SiO₂) NPs are compared to macroscopic surfaces with extremely low roughness (root mean square [RMS] roughness ≤ 2 nm) or a roughness determined by a close-packed layer of NPs (RMS roughness ∼ 35 nm). Equivalence of the surface chemistry is assessed by comparing the electrokinetic potentials of the NPs via electrophoretic light scattering and of the macroscopic substrates via streaming current analysis. The wettability of the macroscopic substrates is obtained from advancing (ACAs) and receding contact angles (RCAs) and in situ synchrotron X-ray reflectivity (XRR) provided by the NP wettability at the liquid interfaces.

FINDINGS

Generally, the RCA on smooth surfaces provides a good estimate of NP wetting properties. However, mCAs alone cannot predict adsorption barriers that prevent NP segregation to the interface, as is the case with the pure SiO₂ nanoparticles. This strategy greatly facilitates assessing the wetting properties of NPs for applications such as emulsion formulation, flotation, or water remediation.

Self-Assembly of Graphene Oxide Nanoflakes in a Lipid Monolayer at the Air-Water Interface

The graphene family, especially graphene oxide (GO), has captured increasing prospects in the biomedical field due to its excellent physicochemical properties. Understanding the health and environmental impact of GO is of great importance for guiding future applications. Although their interactions with living organisms are omnipresent, the exact molecular mechanism is yet to be established. The cellular membrane is the first barrier for a foreign molecule to interact before entering into the cell. In the present study, a model system consisting of a lipid monolayer at the air-water interface represents one of the leaflets of this membrane. Surface pressure-area isotherms and advanced synchrotron X-ray scattering techniques have been employed to comprehend the interaction by varying the electrostatics of the membrane. The results depict a strong GO interaction with positively charged phospholipids, weak interaction with zwitterionic lipids, and interestingly negligible interaction with negatively charged lipids. GO flakes induce significant changes in the out-of-plane organization of a positively charged lipid monolayer with a minor influence on in-plane assembly of lipid chains. This interaction is packing-specific, and the influence of GO is much stronger at lower surface pressure. Even though for zwitterionic phospholipids, the GO flakes may partly insert into the lipid chains, the X-ray scattering results indicate that the flakes preferentially lie horizontally underneath the positively charged lipid monolayer. This in-depth structural description may pave new perspectives for the scientific community for the development of GO-based biosensors and biomedical materials.

Unexpected Order-Disorder Transition in Diacetylene Alcohol Langmuir Films

The phase diagram of the Langmuir film of diacetylene alcohol-henicosa-5,7-diyn-1-ol-is investigated by means of surface pressure versus surface area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, and grazing incident X-ray diffraction. Among the usual phases described in the generic phase diagram of small head group molecules, one observes an unexpected reversible transition from an ordered condensed phase to a disordered one upon increasing the surface pressure. We postulate that the origin of this unusual, unprecedented transition results from the competition between the interactions between the diacetylene blocks in the hydrophobic chain and the hydrogen bonds between head groups and water.

Synergistic and Competitive Adsorption of Hydrophilic Nanoparticles and Oil-Soluble Surfactants at the Oil-Water Interface

Fundamental insights into the interplay and self-assembly of nanoparticles and surface-active agents at the liquid-liquid interface play a pivotal role in understanding the ubiquitous colloidal systems present in our natural surroundings, including foods and aquatic life, and in the industry for emulsion stabilization, drug delivery, or enhanced oil recovery. Moreover, well-controlled model systems for mixed interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles and surfactants allow unprecedented insights into nonideal or contaminated particle-stabilized emulsions. Here, we investigate such a model system composed of hydrophilic, negatively, and positively charged silica nanoparticles and the oil-soluble cationic lipid octadecyl amine with in situ synchrotron-based X-ray reflectometry, which is analyzed and discussed jointly with dynamic interfacial tensiometry. Our results indicate that negatively charged silica nanoparticles only adsorb if the oil-water interface is covered with the positively charged lipid, indicating synergistic adsorption. Conversely, the positively charged nanoparticles readily adsorb on their own, but compete with octadecyl amine and reversibly desorb with increasing concentrations of the lipid. These results further indicate that with competitive adsorption, an electrostatic exclusion zone exists around the adsorbed particles. This prevents the adsorption of lipid molecules in this area, leading to a decreased surface excess concentration of surfactants and unexpectedly high interfacial tension.

Tunable side-bounce monochromator

Side-bounce beamlines with fixed-exit angles have been intended to operate with only one selected energy. However, a tunable monochromator in a new geometry is presented here that will make side-bounce beamlines energy tunable. It requires the addition of two more rotations. Analytic solutions for the values of these two rotation angles are provided. The validity of the new concept was checked by ray tracing and two-dimensional searches in the additional angles. Operational details on the new scheme, including the exit offset and steering of the beams, were determined. In addition to tunability, the new monochromator will reduce the loss from the polarization factor at low energies.

Nucleation and Growth of PbBrF Crystals at the Liquid Mercury-Electrolyte Interface Studied by Operando X-ray Scattering

Detailed in operando studies of electrochemically induced PbBrF deposition at the liquid mercury/liquid electrolyte interface are presented. The nucleation and growth were monitored using time-resolved X-ray diffraction and reflectivity combined with electrochemical measurements, revealing a complex potential-dependent behavior. PbBrF deposition commences at potentials above -0.7 V with the rapid formation of an ultrathin adlayer of one unit cell thickness, on top of which (001)-oriented three-dimensional crystallites are formed. Two potential regimes are identified. At low overpotentials, slow growth of a low surface density film of large crystals is observed. At high overpotentials, crossover to a potential-independent morphology occurs, consisting of a compact PbBrF deposit with a saturation thickness of 25 nm, which forms within a few minutes. This potential behavior can be rationalized by the increasing supersaturation near the interface, caused by the potential-dependent Pb²⁺ deamalgamation, which changes from a slow reaction-controlled process to a fast transport-controlled process in this range of overpotentials. In addition, growth on the liquid substrate is found to involve complex micromechanical effects, such as crystal reorientation and film breakup during dissolution.

Evolution and Reversible Polarity of Multilayering at the Ionic Liquid/Water Interface

Highly correlated positioning of ions underlies Coulomb interactions between ions and electrified interfaces within dense ionic fluids such as biological cells and ionic liquids. Recent work has shown that highly correlated ionic systems behave differently than dilute electrolyte solutions, and interest is focused upon characterizing the electrical and structural properties of the dense electrical double layers (EDLs) formed at internal interfaces. It has been a challenge for experiments to characterize the progressive development of the EDL on the nanoscale as the interfacial electric potential is varied over a range of positive and negative values. Here we address this challenge by measuring X-ray reflectivity from the interface between an ionic liquid (IL) and a dilute aqueous electrolyte solution over a range of interfacial potentials from -450 to 350 mV. The growth of alternately charged cation-rich and anion-rich layers was observed along with a polarity reversal of the layers as the potential changed sign. These data show that the structural development of an ionic multilayer-like EDL with increasing potential is similar to that suggested by phenomenological theories and MD simulations, although our data also reveal that the excess charge beyond the first ionic layer decays more rapidly than predicted.

FORTE - a multipurpose high-vacuum diffractometer for tender X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy at the SIRIUS beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL

A new high-vacuum multipurpose diffractometer (called FORTE from the French acronyms of the project) has recently been installed at the tender/hard X-ray SIRIUS beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL, France. The geometry chosen allows one to work either in the classical Eulerian four-circle geometry for bulk X-ray diffraction (XRD) or in the z-axis geometry for surface XRD. The diffractometer nicely fits the characteristics of the SIRIUS beamline, optimized to work in the 1.1-4.5 keV range, and allows one to perform unprecedented diffraction anomalous fine structure (DAFS) experiments in the tender X-ray region, also around non-specular reflections, covering a large reciprocal-space volume. Installation of an X-ray fluorescence detector on a dedicated flange allows simultaneous DAFS and X-ray absorption (XAS) measurements. The access to the tender X-ray region paves the way to resonant investigations around the L-edges of second-row transition elements which are constituents of functional oxide materials. It also enables access to several edges of interest for semiconductors. Finally, the control architecture based on synchronized Delta Tau units opens up exciting perspectives for improvement of the mechanical sphere of confusion.

Photoswitchable Glycolipid Mimetics: Synthesis and Photochromic Properties of Glycoazobenzene Amphiphiles

Glycolipids as constituents of cell membranes play an important role in cell membrane functioning. To enable the structural modification of membranes on demand, embedding of photosensitive glycolipid mimetics was envisioned and novel amphiphilic glycolipid mimetics comprising a photoswitchable azobenzene unit were synthesized. In this study, the photochromic properties of these glycolipid mimetics were analyzed by means of UV/Vis spectroscopy and reversible photoswitching. The glycolipids were based on a racemic glycerolipid derivative to be comparable in DPPC (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) phospholipid membrane monolayers. Carbohydrate head groups were altered between a β-glucoside and a β-lactosyl unit, as well as acyl chain lengths between C12 and C16, resulting in altered photoswitching. Langmuir isotherms showed that photoswitching of Langmuir films comprising the synthetic photosensitive glycoamphiphiles was successful.

X-ray reflectivity from curved liquid interfaces

X-ray reflectivity studies of the structure of liquid-vapour and liquid-liquid interfaces at modern sources, such as free-electron lasers, are currently impeded by the lack of dedicated liquid surface diffractometers. It is shown that this obstacle can be overcome by an alternative experimental approach that uses the natural curvature of a liquid drop for variation of the angle of incidence. Two modes of operation are shown: (i) sequential reflectivity measurements by a nanometre beam and (ii) parallel acquisition of large ranges of a reflectivity curve by micrometre beams. The feasibility of the two methods is demonstrated by studies of the Hg/vapour, H₂O/vapour and Hg/0.1 M NaF interface. The obtained reflectivity curves match the data obtained by conventional techniques up to 5α_c in micro-beam mode and up to 35α_c in nano-beam mode, allowing observation of the Hg layering peak.

Surface structure evolution in a homologous series of ionic liquids

Interfaces of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are important for both applications and basic science and are therefore intensely studied. However, the evolution of their interface structure with the cation's alkyl chain length [Formula: see text] from Coulomb to van der Waals interaction domination has not yet been studied for even a single broad homologous RTIL series. We present here such a study of the liquid-air interface for [Formula: see text], using angstrom-resolution X-ray methods. For [Formula: see text], a typical "simple liquid" monotonic surface-normal electron density profile [Formula: see text] is obtained, like those of water and organic solvents. For [Formula: see text], increasingly more pronounced nanoscale self-segregation of the molecules' charged moieties and apolar chains yields surface layering with alternating regions of headgroups and chains. The layering decays into the bulk over a few, to a few tens, of nanometers. The layering periods and decay lengths, their linear [Formula: see text] dependence, and slopes are discussed within two models, one with partial-chain interdigitation and the other with liquid-like chains. No surface-parallel long-range order is found within the surface layer. For [Formula: see text], a different surface phase is observed above melting. Our results also impact general liquid-phase issues like supramolecular self-aggregation and bulk-surface structure relations.

Surface induced smectic order in ionic liquids - an X-ray reflectivity study of [C22C1im]+[NTf2]. Phys Chem Chem Phys 2018;19:26651-26661. [PMID: 28960006 DOI: 10.1039/c7cp04852a]

Surface induced smectic order was found for the ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-docosylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethlysulfonyl)imide by X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence scattering experiments. Near the free liquid surface, an ordered structure of alternating layers composed of polar and non-polar moieties is observed. This leads to an oscillatory interfacial profile perpendicular to the liquid surface with a periodicity of 3.7 nm. Small angle X-ray scattering and polarized light microscopy measurements suggest that the observed surface structure is related to fluctuations into a metastable liquid crystalline SmA₂ phase that was found by supercooling the bulk liquid. The observed surface ordering persists up to 157 °C, i.e. more than 88 K above the bulk melting temperature of 68.1 °C. Close to the bulk melting point, we find a thickness of the ordered layer of L = 30 nm. The dependency of L(τ) = Λ ln(τ/τ₁) vs. reduced temperature τ follows a logarithmic growth law. In agreement with theory, the pre-factor Λ is governed by the correlation length of the isotropic bulk phase.

Molecular scale structure and dynamics at an ionic liquid/electrode interface

The structural arrangement and dynamics of ions near the IL/electrode interface during charging and discharging was studied by a combination of time resolved X-ray reflectivity and impedance spectroscopy.

Fast X-ray reflectivity measurements using an X-ray pixel area detector at the DiffAbs beamline, Synchrotron SOLEIL

This paper describes a method for rapid measurements of the specular X-ray reflectivity signal using an area detector and a monochromatic, well collimated X-ray beam (divergence below 0.01°), combined with a continuous data acquisition mode during the angular movements of the sample and detector. In addition to the total integrated (and background-corrected) reflectivity signal, this approach yields a three-dimensional mapping of the reciprocal space in the vicinity of its origin. Grazing-incidence small-angle scattering signals are recorded simultaneously. Measurements up to high momentum transfer values (close to 0.1 nm^-1, also depending on the X-ray beam energy) can be performed in total time ranges as short as 10 s. The measurement time can be reduced by up to 100 times as compared with the classical method using monochromatic X-ray beams, a point detector and rocking scans (integrated reflectivity signal).

Evidence of contact epitaxy in the self-assembly of HgSe nanocrystals formed at a liquid-liquid interface

The grazing incidence x-ray scattering results presented here show that the self-assembly process of HgSe nanocrystals formed at a liquid-liquid interface is quite different along the in-plane direction and across the interface. In situ x-ray reflectivity and ex situ microscopy measurements suggest quantized out-of-plane growth for HgSe nanoparticles of a size of about [Formula: see text] nm initially. Grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering measurements for films transferred from the water-toluene interface at various stages of reaction show that these nanoparticles first form random clusters with an average radius of 2.2 nm, giving rise to equally spaced rings of several orders. Finally, these clusters self-organize into face-centered cubic superstructures, giving sharp x-ray diffraction peaks oriented normal to the liquid-liquid interface with more than 100 nm-coherent domains. We also observed the x-ray diffraction pattern of the HgSe crystalline phase, with the superlattice peaks in these grazing incidence measurements of the transferred films. The electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy results support the x-ray observation of the self-organization of HgSe nanocrystals into close-packed superlattices. These results show that capillary wave fluctuation promotes the oriented attachment of clusters at the liquid-liquid interface, giving direct experimental evidence of contact epitaxy.

The Atomic scale structure of liquid metal-electrolyte interfaces

Electrochemical interfaces between immiscible liquids have lately received renewed interest, both for gaining fundamental insight as well as for applications in nanomaterial synthesis. In this feature article we demonstrate that the atomic scale structure of these previously inaccessible interfaces nowadays can be explored by in situ synchrotron based X-ray scattering techniques. Exemplary studies of a prototypical electrochemical system - a liquid mercury electrode in pure NaCl solution - reveal that the liquid metal is terminated by a well-defined atomic layer. This layering decays on length scales of 0.5 nm into the Hg bulk and displays a potential and temperature dependent behaviour that can be explained by electrocapillary effects and contributions of the electronic charge distribution on the electrode. In similar studies of nanomaterial growth, performed for the electrochemical deposition of PbFBr, a complex nucleation and growth behaviour is found, involving a crystalline precursor layer prior to the 3D crystal growth. Operando X-ray scattering measurements provide detailed data on the processes of nanoscale film formation.

Characterization of a Pt mirror to be used to deflect synchrotron radiation beam onto Langmuir monolayers

A homemade mirror for X-rays has been built to prepare a diffraction beamline for liquid surface diffraction and scattering measurements. This simple approach is in operation at the XRD2 bending-magnet beamline at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory.

Effect of cholesterol and ergosterol on the antibiotic amphotericin B interactions with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine monolayers: X-ray reflectivity study

Amphotericin B is a Streptomyces nodosus metabolite and one of the oldest polyene antibiotics used in the treatment of invasive systemic fungal infections. Despite its over 50-year existence in clinical practice and the recognition of amphotericin B as the gold standard in the treatment of serious systemic mycosis, it still remains one of the most toxic pharmaceuticals. Understanding of the processes at the molecular levels and the interactions between amphotericin B with lipid membranes containing sterols should elucidate the mechanisms of the action and toxicity of this widely used antibiotic. In this work, we use X-ray reflectivity to study the structural changes on a molecular scale after amphotericin B incorporation. These changes are accompanied by an increase in monolayer surface pressure which is more pronounced for ergosterol - rather than cholesterol-rich membranes. The data indicate that this difference is not due to the higher affinity of amphotericin B towards ergosterol-containing membranes but is rather due to a ~3Angstrom corrugation of the monolayer. Furthermore, the total quantity of amphotericin B incorporated into lipid monolayers containing cholesterol and ergosterol is the same.
