Multimodal surface coils for low field MR imaging

Low field MRI is safer and more cost effective than the high field MRI. One of the inherent problems of low field MRI is its low signal-to-noise ratio or sensitivity. In this work, we introduce a multimodal surface coil technique for signal excitation and reception to improve the RF magnetic field (B1) efficiency and potentially improve MR sensitivity. The proposed multimodal surface coil consists of multiple identical resonators that are electromagnetically coupled to form a multimodal resonator. The field distribution of its lowest frequency mode is suitable for MR imaging applications. The prototype multimodal surface coils are built, and the performance is investigated and validated through numerical simulation, standard RF measurements and tests, and comparison with the conventional surface coil at low fields. Our results show that the B1 efficiency of the multimodal surface coil outperforms that of the conventional surface coil which is known to offer the highest B1 efficiency among all coil categories, i.e., volume coil, half-volume coil and surface coil. In addition, in low-field MRI, the required low-frequency coils often use large value capacitance to achieve the low resonant frequency which makes frequency tuning difficult. The proposed multimodal surface coil can be conveniently tuned to the required low frequency for low-field MRI with significantly reduced capacitance value, demonstrating excellent low-frequency operation capability over the conventional surface coil.

Prevalence of Rathke Cleft and Other Incidental Pituitary Gland Findings on Contrast-Enhanced 3D Fat-Saturated T1 MPRAGE at 7T MRI

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

A cleftlike nonenhancing hypointensity was observed repeatedly in the pituitary gland at the adenohypophysis/neurohypophysis border on contrast-enhanced 3D fat-saturated T1-MPRAGE using clinical 7T MRI. Our primary goal was to assess the prevalence of this finding. The secondary goals were to evaluate the frequency of other incidental pituitary lesions, MRI artifacts, and their effect on pituitary imaging on the contrast-enhanced 3D fat-saturated T1 MPRAGE at 7T.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred patients who underwent 7T neuroimaging between October 27, 2021, and August 10, 2023, were included. Each case was evaluated for cleftlike pituitary hypointensity, pituitary masses, and artifacts on contrast-enhanced 3D fat-saturated T1 MPRAGE. Follow-up examinations were evaluated if present. The average prevalence for each finding was calculated, as were descriptive statistics for age and sex.

RESULTS

A cleftlike hypointensity was present in 66% of 7T MRIs. There were no significant differences between the "cleftlike present" and "cleftlike absent" groups regarding sex (P = .39) and age (P = .32). The cleftlike hypointensity was demonstrated on follow-up MRIs in 3/3 patients with 7T, 1/12 with 3T, and 1/5 with 1.5T. A mass was found in 22%, while 75% had no mass and 3% were indeterminate. A mass was found in 18 (27%) of the cleftlike present and 4 (13%) of the cleftlike absent groups. The most common mass types were Rathke cleft cyst in 7 (31.8%) patients, "Rathke cleft cyst versus entrapped CSF" in 6 (27.3%), and microadenoma in 6 (22.2%) in the cleftlike present group. There were no significant differences in the mass types between the cleftlike present and cleftlike absent groups (P = .23). Susceptibility and/or motion artifacts were frequent using contrast-enhanced 3D fat-saturated T1 MPRAGE (54%). Artifact-free scans were significantly more frequent in the cleftlike present group (P = .03).

CONCLUSIONS

A cleftlike nonenhancing hypointensity was frequently seen on the contrast-enhanced 3D fat-saturated T1 MPRAGE images at 7T MRI, which most likely represents a normal embryologic Rathke cleft remnant and cannot be seen in lower-field-strength MRIs. Susceptibility and motion artifacts are common in the sella. They may affect image quality, and the artifacts at 7T may lead to an underestimation of the prevalence of the Rathke cleft and other incidental findings.

Performance of receive head arrays versus ultimate intrinsic SNR at 7 T and 10.5 T

PURPOSE

We examined magnetic field dependent SNR gains and ability to capture them with multichannel receive arrays for human head imaging in going from 7 T, the most commonly used ultrahigh magnetic field (UHF) platform at the present, to 10.5 T, which represents the emerging new frontier of >10 T in UHFs.

METHODS

Electromagnetic (EM) models of 31-channel and 63-channel multichannel arrays built for 10.5 T were developed for 10.5 T and 7 T simulations. A 7 T version of the 63-channel array with an identical coil layout was also built. Array performance was evaluated in the EM model using a phantom mimicking the size and electrical properties of the human head and a digital human head model. Experimental data was obtained at 7 T and 10.5 T with the 63-channel array. Ultimate intrinsic SNR (uiSNR) was calculated for the two field strengths using a voxelized cloud of dipoles enclosing the phantom or the digital human head model as a reference to assess the performance of the two arrays and field depended SNR gains.

RESULTS

uiSNR calculations in both the phantom and the digital human head model demonstrated SNR gains at 10.5 T relative to 7 T of 2.6 centrally, ˜2 at the location corresponding to the edge of the brain, ˜1.4 at the periphery. The EM models demonstrated that, centrally, both arrays captured ˜90% of the uiSNR at 7 T, but only ˜65% at 10.5 T, leading only to ˜2-fold gain in array SNR in going from 7 to 10.5 T. This trend was also observed experimentally with the 63-channel array capturing a larger fraction of the uiSNR at 7 T compared to 10.5 T, although the percentage of uiSNR captured were slightly lower at both field strengths compared to EM simulation results.

CONCLUSIONS

Major uiSNR gains are predicted for human head imaging in going from 7 T to 10.5 T, ranging from ˜2-fold at locations corresponding to the edge of the brain to 2.6-fold at the center, corresponding to approximately quadratic increase with the magnetic field. Realistic 31- and 63-channel receive arrays, however, approach the central uiSNR at 7 T, but fail to do so at 10.5 T, suggesting that more coils and/or different type of coils will be needed at 10.5 T and higher magnetic fields.

Coupled stack-up volume RF coils for low-field open MR imaging

Background

Low-field open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, typically operating at magnetic field strengths below 1 Tesla, has greatly expanded the accessibility of MRI technology to meet a wide range of patient needs. However, the inherent challenges of low-field MRI, such as limited signal-to-noise ratios and limited availability of dedicated radiofrequency (RF) coils, have prompted the need for innovative coil designs that can improve imaging quality and diagnostic capabilities.

Purpose

In response to these challenges, we introduce the coupled stack-up volume coil, a novel RF coil design that addresses the shortcomings of conventional birdcage in the context of low-field open MRI.

Methods

The proposed coupled stack-up volume coil design utilizes a unique architecture that optimizes both transmit/receive efficiency and RF field homogeneity and offers the advantage of a simple design and construction, making it a practical and feasible solution for low-field MRI applications. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the theoretical framework, design considerations, and experimental validation of this innovative coil design.

Results

We demonstrate the superior performance of the coupled stack-up volume coil in achieving 47.7% higher transmit/receive efficiency and 68% more uniform magnetic field distribution compared to traditional birdcage coils in electromagnetic simulations. Bench tests results show that the B1 field efficiency of coupled stack-up volume coil is 57.3% higher compared with that of conventional birdcage coil.

Conclusions

The proposed coupled stack-up volume coil outperforms the conventional birdcage coil in terms of B1 efficiency, imaging coverage, and low-frequency operation capability. This design provides a robust and simple solution to low-field MR RF coil design.

Ultra-High Contrast MRI: The Whiteout Sign Shown with Divided Subtracted Inversion Recovery (dSIR) Sequences in Post-Insult Leukoencephalopathy Syndromes (PILS)

Ultra-high contrast (UHC) MRI describes forms of MRI in which little or no contrast is seen on conventional MRI images but very high contrast is seen with UHC techniques. One of these techniques uses the divided subtracted inversion recovery (dSIR) sequence, which, in modelling studies, can produce ten times the contrast of conventional inversion recovery (IR) sequences. When used in cases of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), the dSIR sequence frequently shows extensive abnormalities in white matter that appears normal when imaged with conventional T2-fluid-attenuated IR (T2-FLAIR) sequences. The changes are bilateral and symmetrical in white matter of the cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres. They partially spare the anterior and posterior central corpus callosum and peripheral white matter of the cerebral hemispheres and are described as the whiteout sign. In addition to mTBI, the whiteout sign has also been seen in methamphetamine use disorder and Grinker's myelinopathy (delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy) in the absence of abnormalities on T2-FLAIR images, and is a central component of post-insult leukoencephalopathy syndromes. This paper describes the concept of ultra-high contrast MRI, the whiteout sign, the theory underlying the use of dSIR sequences and post-insult leukoencephalopathy syndromes.

RF coil design strategies for improving SNR at the ultrahigh magnetic field of 10.5 Tesla

Purpose

To develop multichannel transmit and receive arrays towards capturing the ultimate-intrinsic-SNR (uiSNR) at 10.5 Tesla (T) and to demonstrate the feasibility and potential of whole-brain, high-resolution human brain imaging at this high field strength.

Methods

A dual row 16-channel self-decoupled transmit (Tx) array was converted to a 16Tx/Rx transceiver using custom transmit/receive switches. A 64-channel receive-only (64Rx) array was built to fit into the 16Tx/Rx array. Electromagnetic modeling and experiments were employed to define safe operation limits of the resulting 16Tx/80Rx array and obtain FDA approval for human use.

Results

The 64Rx array alone captured approximately 50% of the central uiSNR at 10.5T while the identical 7T 64Rx array captured ∼76% of uiSNR at this lower field strength. The 16Tx/80Rx configuration brought the fraction of uiSNR captured at 10.5T to levels comparable to the performance of the 64Rx array at 7T. SNR data obtained at the two field strengths with these arrays displayed dependent increases over a large central region. Whole-brain high resolution T 2 * and T 1 weighted anatomical and gradient-recalled echo EPI BOLD fMRI images were obtained at 10.5T for the first time with such an advanced array, illustrating the promise of >10T fields in studying the human brain.

Conclusion

We demonstrated the ability to approach the uiSNR at 10.5T over the human brain with a novel, high channel count array, achieving large SNR gains over 7T, currently the most commonly employed ultrahigh field platform, and demonstrate high resolution and high contrast anatomical and functional imaging at 10.5T.

Dual-Tuned Coaxial-Transmission-Line RF Coils for Hyperpolarized 13C and Deuterium 2H Metabolic MRS Imaging at Ultrahigh Fields

OBJECTIVE

Information on the metabolism of tissues in healthy and diseased states plays a significant role in the detection and understanding of tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Hyperpolarized carbon-13 magnetic resonance imaging (13C-HPMRI) and deuterium metabolic imaging (2H-DMI) are two emerging X-nuclei used as practical imaging tools to investigate tissue metabolism. However due to their low gyromagnetic ratios (ɣ13C = 10.7 MHz/T; ɣ2H = 6.5 MHz/T) and natural abundance, such method required a sophisticated dual-tuned radiofrequency (RF) coil.

METHODS

Here, we report a dual-tuned coaxial transmission line (CTL) RF coil agile for metabolite information operating at 7T with independent tuning capability. The design analysis has demonstrated how both resonant frequencies can be individually controlled by simply varying the constituent of the design parameters.

RESULTS

Numerical results have demonstrated a broadband tuning range capability, covering most of the X-nucleus signal, especially the 13C and 2H spectra at 7T. Furthermore, in order to validate the feasibility of the proposed design, both dual-tuned 1H/13C and 1H/2H CTLs RF coils are fabricated using a semi-flexible RG-405 .086" coaxial cable and bench test results (scattering parameters and magnetic field efficiency/distribution) are successfully obtained.

CONCLUSION

The proposed dual-tuned RF coils reveal highly effective magnetic field obtained from both proton and heteronuclear signal which is crucial for accurate and detailed imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE

The successful development of this new dual-tuned RF coil technique would provide a tangible and efficient tool for ultrahigh field metabolic MR imaging.

A Metamaterial-like Structure Design Using Non-uniformly Distributed Dielectric and Conducting Strips to Boost the RF Field Distribution in 7 T MRI

Metamaterial-based designs in ultra-high field (≥7 T) MRI have the promise of increasing the local magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal and potentially even the global efficiency of both the radiofrequency (RF) transmit and receive resonators. A recently proposed metamaterial-like structure-comprised of a high-permittivity dielectric material and a set of evenly distributed copper strips-indeed resulted in a local increase in RF transmission. Here, we demonstrate that non-uniform designs of this metamaterial-like structure can be used to boost the ultimate RF field distribution. A non-uniform dielectric distribution can yield longer electric dipoles, thus extending the RF transmit field coverage. A non-uniform distribution of conducting strips enables the tailoring of the local electric field hot spots, where a concave distribution resulted in lower power deposition. Simulations of the brain and calf regions using our new metamaterial-like design, which combines non-uniform distributions of both the dielectric and conducting strips, revealed a 1.4-fold increase in the RF field coverage compared to the uniform distribution, and a 1.5-2-fold increase in the transmit efficiency compared to the standard surface-coil.

Subwavelength dielectric waveguide for efficient travelling-wave magnetic resonance imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has diverse applications in physics, biology, and medicine. Uniform excitation of nuclei spins through circular-polarized transverse magnetic component of electromagnetic field is vital for obtaining unbiased tissue contrasts. However, achieving this in the electrically large human body poses a significant challenge, especially at ultra-high fields (UHF) with increased working frequencies (≥297 MHz). Canonical volume resonators struggle to meet this challenge, while radiative excitation methods like travelling-wave (TW) show promise but often suffer from inadequate excitation efficiency. Here, we introduce a new technique using a subwavelength dielectric waveguide insert that enhances both efficiency and homogeneity at 7 T. Through TE11-to-TM11 mode conversion, power focusing, wave impedance matching, and phase velocity matching, we achieved a 114% improvement in TW efficiency and mitigated the center-brightening effect. This fundamental advancement in TW MRI through effective wave manipulation could promote the electromagnetic design of UHF MRI systems.

Cerebral Microvascular Perfusion Assessed in Elderly Adults by Spin-Echo Dynamic Susceptibility Contrast MRI at 7 Tesla

Perfusion measures of the total vasculature are commonly derived with gradient-echo (GE) dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) MR images, which are acquired during the early passes of a contrast agent. Alternatively, spin-echo (SE) DSC can be used to achieve specific sensitivity to the capillary signal. For an improved contrast-to-noise ratio, ultra-high-field MRI makes this technique more appealing to study cerebral microvascular physiology. Therefore, this study assessed the applicability of SE-DSC MRI at 7 T. Forty-one elderly adults underwent 7 T MRI using a multi-slice SE-EPI DSC sequence. The cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) were determined in the cortical grey matter (CGM) and white matter (WM) and compared to values from the literature. The relation of CBV and CBF with age and sex was investigated. Higher CBV and CBF values were found in CGM compared to WM, whereby the CGM-to-WM ratios depended on the amount of largest vessels excluded from the analysis. CBF was negatively associated with age in the CGM, while no significant association was found with CBV. Both CBV and CBF were higher in women compared to men in both CGM and WM. The current study verifies the possibility of quantifying cerebral microvascular perfusion with SE-DSC MRI at 7 T.

Identifying potential imaging markers for diffusion property changes in a mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Application of the continuous time random walk model to ultrahigh b-value diffusion-weighted MR images of spinal cord tissue

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) explores tissue microstructures by analyzing diffusion-weighted signal decay measured at different b-values. While relatively low b-values are used for most dMRI models, high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) techniques have gained interest given that the non-Gaussian water diffusion behavior observed at high b-values can yield potentially valuable information. In this study, we investigated anomalous diffusion behaviors associated with degeneration of spinal cord tissue using a continuous time random walk (CTRW) model for DWI data acquired across an extensive range of ultrahigh b-values. The diffusion data were acquired in situ from the lumbar level of spinal cords of wild-type and age-matched transgenic SOD1G93A mice, a well-established animal model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) featuring progressive degeneration of axonal tracts in this tissue. Based on the diffusion decay behaviors at low and ultrahigh b-values, we applied the CTRW model using various combinations of b-values and compared diffusion metrics calculated from the CTRW model between the experimental groups. We found that diffusion-weighted signal decay curves measured with ultrahigh b-values (up to 858,022 s/mm2 in this study) were well represented by the CTRW model. The anomalous diffusion coefficient obtained from lumbar spinal cords was significantly higher in SOD1G93A mice compared with control mice (14.7 × 10-5  ± 5.54 × 10-5  vs. 7.87 × 10-5  ± 2.48 × 10-5  mm2 /s, p = 0.01). We believe this is the first study to illustrate the efficacy of the CTRW model for analyzing anomalous diffusion regimes at ultrahigh b-values. The CTRW modeling of ultrahigh b-value dMRI can potentially present a novel approach for noninvasively evaluating alterations in spinal cord tissue associated with ALS pathology.

Use of a Commercial 7-T MRI Scanner for Clinical Brain Imaging: Indications, Protocols, Challenges, and Solutions-A Single-Center Experience

The first commercially available 7-T MRI scanner (Magnetom Terra) was approved by the FDA in 2017 for clinical imaging of the brain and knee. After initial protocol development and sequence optimization efforts in volunteers, the 7-T system, in combination with an FDA-approved 1-channel transmit/32-channel receive array head coil, can now be routinely used for clinical brain MRI examinations. The ultrahigh field strength of 7-T MRI has the advantages of improved spatial resolution, increased SNR, and increased CNR but also introduces an array of new technical challenges. The purpose of this article is to describe an institutional experience with the use of the commercially available 7-T MRI scanner for routine clinical brain imaging. Specific clinical indications for which 7-T MRI may be useful for brain imaging include brain tumor evaluation with possible perfusion imaging and/or spectroscopy, radiotherapy planning; evaluation of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, evaluation of Parkinson disease and guidance of deep brain stimulator placement, high-detail intracranial MRA and vessel wall imaging, evaluation of pituitary pathology, and evaluation of epilepsy. Detailed protocols, including sequence parameters, for these various indications are presented, and implementation challenges (including artifacts, safety, and side effects) and potential solutions are explored.

Innovations in imaging modalities: a comparative review of MRI, long-axial field-of-view PET, and full-ring CZT-SPECT in detecting bone metastases

The accurate diagnosis of bone metastasis, a condition in which cancer cells have spread to the bone, is essential for optimal patient care and outcome. This review provides a detailed overview of the current medical imaging techniques used to detect and diagnose this critical condition focusing on three cardinal imaging modalities: positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Each of these techniques has unique advantages: PET/CT combines functional imaging with anatomical imaging, allowing precise localization of metabolic abnormalities; the SPECT/CT offers a wider range of radiopharmaceuticals for visualizing specific receptors and metabolic pathways; MRI stands out for its unparalleled ability to produce high-resolution images of bone marrow structures. However, as this paper shows, each modality has its own limitations. The comprehensive analysis does not stop at the technical aspects, but ventures into the wider implications of these techniques in a clinical setting. By understanding the synergies and shortcomings of these modalities, healthcare professionals can make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Furthermore, at a time when medical technology is evolving at a breakneck pace, this review casts a speculative eye towards future advances in the field of bone metastasis imaging, bridging the current state with future possibilities. Such insights are essential for both clinicians and researchers navigating the complex landscape of bone metastasis diagnosis.

Feasibility of Accelerated Prostate Diffusion-Weighted Imaging on 0.55 T MRI Enabled With Random Matrix Theory Denoising

INTRODUCTION

Prostate cancer diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) MRI is typically performed at high-field strength (3.0 T) in order to overcome low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of prostate DWI at low field enabled by random matrix theory (RMT)-based denoising, relying on the MP-PCA algorithm applied during image reconstruction from multiple coils.

METHODS

Twenty-one volunteers and 2 prostate cancer patients were imaged with a 6-channel pelvic surface array coil and an 18-channel spine array on a prototype 0.55 T system created by ramping down a commercial magnetic resonance imaging system (1.5 T MAGNETOM Aera Siemens Healthcare) with 45 mT/m gradients and 200 T/m/s slew rate. Diffusion-weighted images were acquired with 4 non-collinear directions, for which b = 50 s/mm 2 was used with 8 averages and b = 1000 s/mm 2 with 40 averages; 2 extra b = 50 s/mm 2 were used as part of the dynamic field correction. Standard and RMT-based reconstructions were applied on DWI over different ranges of averages. Accuracy/precision was evaluated using the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and image quality was evaluated over 5 separate reconstructions by 3 radiologists with a 5-point Likert scale. For the 2 patients, we compare image quality and lesion visibility of the RMT reconstruction versus the standard one on 0.55 T and on clinical 3.0 T.

RESULTS

The RMT-based reconstruction in this study reduces the noise floor by a factor of 5.8, thereby alleviating the bias on prostate ADC. Moreover, the precision of the ADC in prostate tissue after RMT increases over a range of 30%-130%, with the increase in both signal-to-noise ratio and precision being more prominent for a low number of averages. Raters found that the images were consistently of moderate to good overall quality (3-4 on the Likert scale). Moreover, they determined that b = 1000 s/mm 2 images from a 1:55-minute scan with the RMT-based reconstruction were on par with the corresponding images from a 14:20-minute scan with standard reconstruction. Prostate cancer was visible on ADC and calculated b = 1500 images even with the abbreviated 1:55-minute scan reconstructed with RMT.

CONCLUSIONS

Prostate imaging using DWI is feasible at low field and can be performed more rapidly with noninferior image quality compared with standard reconstruction.

A 32-Channel Sleeve Antenna Receiver Array for Human Head MRI Applications at 10.5 T

For human brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high channel count ( ≥ 32 ) radiofrequency receiver coil arrays are utilized to achieve maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and to accelerate parallel imaging techniques. With ultra-high field (UHF) MRI at 7 tesla (T) and higher, dipole antenna arrays have been shown to generate high SNR in the deep regions of the brain, however the array elements exhibit increased electromagnetic coupling with one another, making array construction more difficult with the increasing number of elements. Compared to a classical dipole antenna array, a sleeve antenna array incorporates the coaxial ground into the feed-point, resulting in a modified asymmetric antenna structure with improved intra-element decoupling. Here, we extended our previous 16-channel sleeve transceiver work and developed a 32-channel azimuthally arranged sleeve antenna receive-only array for 10.5 T human brain imaging. We experimentally compared the achievable SNR of the sleeve antenna array at 10.5 T to a more traditional 32-channel loop array bult onto a human head-shaped former. The results obtained with a head shaped phantom clearly demonstrated that peripheral intrinsic SNR can be significantly improved compared to a loop array with the same number of elements- except for the superior part of the phantom where sleeve antenna elements are not located.

Evaluating increases in sensitivity from NORDIC for diverse fMRI acquisition strategies

As the neuroimaging field moves towards detecting smaller effects at higher spatial resolutions, and faster sampling rates, there is increased attention given to the deleterious contribution of unstructured, thermal noise. Here, we critically evaluate the performance of a recently developed reconstruction method, termed NORDIC, for suppressing thermal noise using datasets acquired with various field strengths, voxel sizes, sampling rates, and task designs. Following minimal preprocessing, statistical activation (t-values) of NORDIC processed data was compared to the results obtained with alternative denoising methods. Additionally, we examined the consistency of the estimates of task responses at the single-voxel, single run level, using a finite impulse response (FIR) model. To examine the potential impact on effective image resolution, the overall smoothness of the data processed with different methods was estimated. Finally, to determine if NORDIC alters or removes temporal information important for modeling responses, we employed an exhaustive leave-p-out cross validation approach, using FIR task responses to predict held out timeseries, quantified using R². After NORDIC, the t-values are increased, an improvement comparable to what could be achieved by 1.5 voxels smoothing, and task events are clearly visible and have less cross-run error. These advantages are achieved with smoothness estimates increasing by less than 4%, while 1.5 voxel smoothing is associated with increases of over 140%. Cross-validated R²s based on the FIR models show that NORDIC is not measurably distorting the temporal structure of the data under this approach and is the best predictor of non-denoised time courses. The results demonstrate that analyzing 1 run of data after NORDIC produces results equivalent to using 2 to 3 original runs and that NORDIC performs equally well across a diverse array of functional imaging protocols. Significance Statement: For functional neuroimaging, the increasing availability of higher field strengths and ever higher spatiotemporal resolutions has led to concomitant increase in concerns about the deleterious effects of thermal noise. Historically this noise source was suppressed using methods that reduce spatial precision such as image blurring or averaging over a large number of trials or sessions, which necessitates large data collection efforts. Here, we critically evaluate the performance of a recently developed reconstruction method, termed NORDIC, which suppresses thermal noise. Across datasets varying in field strength, voxel sizes, sampling rates, and task designs, NORDIC produces substantial gains in data quality. Both conventional t-statistics derived from general linear models and coefficients of determination for predicting unseen data are improved. These gains match or even exceed those associated with 1 voxel Full Width Half Max image smoothing, however, even such small amounts of smoothing are associated with a 52% reduction in estimates of spatial precision, whereas the measurable difference in spatial precision is less than 4% following NORDIC.

Germany's journey toward 14 Tesla human magnetic resonance

Multiple sites within Germany operate human MRI systems with magnetic fields either at 7 Tesla or 9.4 Tesla. In 2013, these sites formed a network to facilitate and harmonize the research being conducted at the different sites and make this technology available to a larger community of researchers and clinicians not only within Germany, but also worldwide. The German Ultrahigh Field Imaging (GUFI) network has defined a strategic goal to establish a 14 Tesla whole-body human MRI system as a national research resource in Germany as the next progression in magnetic field strength. This paper summarizes the history of this initiative, the current status, the motivation for pursuing MR imaging and spectroscopy at such a high magnetic field strength, and the technical and funding challenges involved. It focuses on the scientific and science policy process from the perspective in Germany, and is not intended to be a comprehensive systematic review of the benefits and technical challenges of higher field strengths.

Commissioning of the Iseult CEA 11.7 T whole-body MRI: current status, gradient-magnet interaction tests and first imaging experience

OBJECTIVES

The Iseult MRI is an actively shielded whole-body magnet providing a homogeneous and stable magnetic field of 11.7 T. After nearly 20 years of research and development, the magnet successfully reached its target field strength for the first time in 2019. This article reviews its commissioning status, the gradient-magnet interaction test results and first imaging experience.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Vibration, acoustics, power deposition in the He bath, and field monitoring measurements were carried out. Magnet safety system was tested against outer magnetic perturbations, and calibrated to define a safe operation of the gradient coil. First measurements using parallel transmission were also performed on an ex-vivo brain to mitigate the RF field inhomogeneity effect.

RESULTS

Acoustics measurements show promising results with sound pressure levels slightly above the enforced limits only at certain frequency intervals. Vibrations of the gradient coil revealed a linear trend with the B₀ field only in the worst case. Field monitoring revealed some resonances at some frequencies that are still under investigation.

DISCUSSION

Gradient-magnet interaction tests at up to 11.7 T are concluded. The scanner is now kept permanently at field and the final calibrations are on-going to pave the road towards the first acquisitions on volunteers.

A hybrid FDTD/MoM algorithm with a conformal Huygens' equivalent surface for MRI RF coil design and analysis

Accurate design and analysis of radiofrequency (RF) coils are crucial for ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. To improve the numerical accuracy of electromagnetic (EM) simulations, we propose a hybrid finite difference time domain (FDTD)/method of moments (MoM) method. Unlike conventional cuboid-like Huygens' equivalent surfaces (HES), we proposed to use a conformal HES to interface the EM data of the FDTD and MoM zone. The shape and size of the conformal surface can be adjusted to fit different RF coil models, thus broadening the application range of the hybrid FDTD/MoM method. Two numerical models: an 8-channel ellipse array, and an 8-channel bent dipole array, are simulated and compared with the conventional HES counterpart. Numerical results demonstrate the capability of the conformal HES method in the analysis of RF coils.

Improved sensitivity and microvascular weighting of 3T laminar fMRI with GE-BOLD using NORDIC and phase regression

INTRODUCTION

Functional MRI with spatial resolution in the submillimeter domain enables measurements of activation across cortical layers in humans. This is valuable as different types of cortical computations, e.g., feedforward versus feedback related activity, take place in different cortical layers. Laminar fMRI studies have almost exclusively employed 7T scanners to overcome the reduced signal stability associated with small voxels. However, such systems are relatively rare and only a subset of those are clinically approved. In the present study, we examined if the feasibility of laminar fMRI at 3T could be improved by use of NORDIC denoising and phase regression.

METHODS

5 healthy subjects were scanned on a Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma 3T scanner. To assess across-session reliability, each subject was scanned in 3-8 sessions on 3-4 consecutive days. A 3D gradient echo EPI (GE-EPI) sequence was used for BOLD acquisitions (voxel size 0.82 mm isotopic, TR = 2.2 s) using a block design finger tapping paradigm. NORDIC denoising was applied to the magnitude and phase time series to overcome limitations in temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR) and the denoised phase time series were subsequently used to correct for large vein contamination through phase regression.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

NORDIC denoising resulted in tSNR values comparable to or higher than commonly observed at 7T. Layer-dependent activation profiles could thus be extracted robustly, within and across sessions, from regions of interest located in the hand knob of the primary motor cortex (M1). Phase regression led to substantially reduced superficial bias in obtained layer profiles, although residual macrovascular contribution remained. We believe the present results support an improved feasibility of laminar fMRI at 3T.

A hybrid FDTD/MoM algorithm with a non-uniform grid for MRI RF coil design

In ultra-high-field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications, the design and analysis of high-frequency radio frequency (RF) coils requires full-wave electromagnetic (EM) methods that can handle complex field-tissue interactions. Using a Huygens' equivalent surface, the Method of Moments (MoM) and the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) algorithm can be combined to accurately model the high-frequency RF coils. In previous research, a uniform FDTD mesh structure was considered, providing a compromised solution for coil-tissue interactions. This paper proposes a hybrid FDTD/MoM algorithm with non-uniform meshes. The fine mesh domain is set at the Huygens' surface, and the other domain uses coarse meshes. The proposed algorithms are strictly validated, and their computational performance is compared against conventional methods. Results show that the new algorithm can improve the calculation efficiency without losing accuracy. Specifically, compared with the uniform FDTD method, the numerical difference between both hybrid methods remains at 3.2%. Still, the calculation time of the non-uniform grid algorithm is reduced by 64.2%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new algorithm for modeling RF coils for UHF-MRI applications.

Design of standalone wireless impedance matching (SWIM) system for RF coils in MRI

The radio frequency (RF) power transfer efficiency of transmit coils and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receive signal chain are directly dependent on the impedance matching condition presented by a loaded coil, tuned to the Larmor frequency. Sub-optimal impedance condition of receive coils significantly reduces coil sensitivity and image quality. In this study we propose a Standalone Wireless Impedance Matching (SWIM) system for RF coils to automatically compensate for the impedance mismatch caused by the loading effect at the target frequency. SWIM uses a built-in RF generator to produce a calibration signal, measure reflected power as feedback for loading change, and determine an optimal impedance. The matching network consists of a capacitor array with micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) RF switches to electronically cycle through different input impedance conditions. Along with automatic calibration, SWIM can also perform software detuning of RF receive coils. An Android mobile application was developed for real-time reflected power monitoring and controlling the SWIM system via Bluetooth. The SWIM system can automatically calibrate an RF coil in 3 s and the saline sample SNR was improved by 24% when compared to a loaded coil without retuning. Four different tomatoes were imaged to validate the performance of SWIM.

A New Combination of Radio-Frequency Coil Configurations Using High-Permittivity Materials and Inductively Coupled Structures for Ultrahigh-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging

In ultrahigh-field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the RF power required to excite the nuclei of the target object increases. As the strength of the main magnetic field (B0 field) increases, the improvement of the RF transmit field (B1+ field) efficiency and receive field (B1- field) sensitivity of radio-frequency (RF) coils is essential to reduce their specific absorption rate and power deposition in UHF MRI. To address these problems, we previously proposed a method to simultaneously improve the B1+ field efficiency and B1- field sensitivity of 16-leg bandpass birdcage RF coils (BP-BC RF coils) by combining a multichannel wireless RF element (MCWE) and segmented cylindrical high-permittivity material (scHPM) comprising 16 elements in 7.0 T MRI. In this work, we further improved the performance of transmit/receive RF coils. A new combination of RF coil with wireless element and HPM was proposed by comparing the BP-BC RF coil with the MCWE and the scHPM proposed in the previous study and the multichannel RF coils with a birdcage RF coil-type wireless element (BCWE) and the scHPM proposed in this study. The proposed 16-ch RF coils with the BCWE and scHPM provided excellent B1+ field efficiency and B1- field sensitivity improvement.

Parallel transmit (pTx) with online pulse design for task-based fMRI at 7 T

PURPOSE

Parallel transmission (pTx) is an approach to improve image uniformity for ultra-high field imaging. In this study, we modified an echo planar imaging (EPI) sequence to design subject-specific pTx pulses online. We compared its performance against EPI with conventional circularly polarised (CP) pulses.

METHODS

We compared the pTx-EPI and CP-EPI sequences in a short EPI acquisition protocol and for two different functional paradigms in six healthy volunteers (2 female, aged 23-36 years, mean age 29.2 years). We chose two paradigms that are typically affected by signal dropout at 7 T: a visual objects localiser to determine face/scene selective brain regions and a semantic-processing task.

RESULTS

Across all subjects, pTx-EPI improved whole-brain mean temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR) by 11.0% compared to CP-EPI. We also compared the ability of pTx-EPI and CP-EPI to detect functional activation for three contrasts over the two paradigms: face > object and scene > object for the visual objects localiser and semantic association > pattern matching for the semantic-processing paradigm. Across all three contrasts, pTx-EPI showed higher median z-scores and detected more active voxels in relevant areas, as determined from previous 3 T studies.

CONCLUSION

We have demonstrated a workflow for EPI acquisitions with online per-subject pulse calculations. We saw improved performance in both tSNR and functional acquisitions from pTx-EPI. Thus, we believe that online calculation pTx-EPI is robust enough for future fMRI studies, especially where activation is expected in brain areas liable to significant signal dropout.

Parallel transmission 2D RARE imaging at 7T with transmit field inhomogeneity mitigation and local SAR control

PURPOSE

We develop and test a parallel transmit (pTx) pulse design framework to mitigate transmit field inhomogeneity with control of local specific absorption rate (SAR) in 2D rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement (RARE) imaging at 7T.

METHODS

We design large flip angle RF pulses with explicit local SAR constraints by numerical simulation of the Bloch equations. Parallel computation and analytical expressions for the Jacobian and the Hessian matrices are employed to reduce pulse design time. The refocusing-excitation "spokes" pulse pairs are designed to satisfy the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) condition using a combined magnitude least squares-least squares approach.

RESULTS

In a simulated dataset, the proposed approach reduced peak local SAR by up to 56% for the same level of refocusing uniformity error and reduced refocusing uniformity error by up to 59% (from 32% to 7%) for the same level of peak local SAR compared to the circularly polarized birdcage mode of the pTx array. Using explicit local SAR constraints also reduced peak local SAR by up to 46% compared to an RF peak power constrained design. The excitation and refocusing uniformity error were reduced from 20%-33% to 4%-6% in single slice phantom experiments. Phantom experiments demonstrated good agreement between the simulated excitation and refocusing uniformity profiles and experimental image shading.

CONCLUSION

PTx-designed excitation and refocusing CPMG pulse pairs can mitigate transmit field inhomogeneity in the 2D RARE sequence. Moreover, local SAR can be decreased significantly using pTx, potentially leading to better slice coverage, enabling larger flip angles or faster imaging.

Inconsistencies in atlas-based volumetric measures of the human nucleus basalis of Meynert: A need for high-resolution alternatives

The nucleus basalis of Meynert (nbM) is the major source of cortical acetylcholine (ACh) and has been related to cognitive processes and to neurological disorders. However, spatially delineating the human nbM in MRI studies remains challenging. Due to the absence of a functional localiser for the human nbM, studies to date have localised it using nearby neuroanatomical landmarks or using probabilistic atlases. To understand the feasibility of MRI of the nbM we set our four goals; our first goal was to review current human nbM region-of-interest (ROI) selection protocols used in MRI studies, which we found have reported highly variable nbM volume estimates. Our next goal was to quantify and discuss the limitations of existing atlas-based volumetry of nbM. We found that the identified ROI volume depends heavily on the atlas used and on the probabilistic threshold set. In addition, we found large disparities even for data/studies using the same atlas and threshold. To test whether spatial resolution contributes to volume variability, as our third goal, we developed a novel nbM mask based on the normalized BigBrain dataset. We found that as long as the spatial resolution of the target data was 1.3 mm isotropic or above, our novel nbM mask offered realistic and stable volume estimates. Finally, as our last goal we tried to discern nbM using publicly available and novel high resolution structural MRI ex vivo MRI datasets. We find that, using an optimised 9.4T quantitative T₂^⁎ ex vivo dataset, the nbM can be visualised using MRI. We conclude caution is needed when applying the current methods of mapping nbM, especially for high resolution MRI data. Direct imaging of the nbM appears feasible and would eliminate the problems we identify, although further development is required to allow such imaging using standard (f)MRI scanning.

A Monopole and Dipole Hybrid Antenna Array for Human Brain Imaging at 10.5 Tesla

In this letter, we evaluate antenna designs for ultra-high frequency and field (UHF) human brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 10.5 tesla (T). Although MRI at such UHF is expected to provide major signal-to-noise gains, the frequency of interest, 447 MHz, presents us with challenges regarding improved B₁ ⁺ efficiency, image homogeneity, specific absorption rate (SAR), and antenna element decoupling for array configurations. To address these challenges, we propose the use of both monopole and dipole antennas in a novel hybrid configuration, which we refer to as a mono-dipole hybrid antenna (MDH) array. Compared to an 8-channel dipole antenna array of the same dimensions, the 8-channel MDH array showed an improvement in decoupling between adjacent array channels, as well as ~18% higher B₁ ⁺ and SAR efficiency near the central region of the phantom based on simulation and experiment. However, the performances of the MDH and dipole antenna arrays were overall similar when evaluating a human model in terms of peak B₁ ⁺ efficiency, 10 g SAR, and SAR efficiency. Finally, the concept of an MDH array showed an advantage in improved decoupling, SAR, and B₁ ⁺ near the superior region of the brain for human brain imaging.

Magnetic field strength dependent SNR gain at the center of a spherical phantom and up to 11.7T

PURPOSE

The SNR at the center of a spherical phantom of known electrical properties was measured in quasi-identical experimental conditions as a function of magnetic field strength between 3 T and 11.7 T.

METHODS

The SNR was measured at the center of a spherical water saline phantom with a gradient recalled echo sequence. Measurements were performed at NeuroSpin at 3, 7, and 11.7 T. The phantom was then shipped to Maastricht University and then to the University of Minnesota for additional data points at 7, 9.4, and 10.5 T. Experiments were carried out with the exact same type of birdcage volume coil (except at 3 T, where a similar coil was used) to attempt at isolating the evolution of SNR with field strength alone. Phantom electrical properties were characterized over the corresponding frequency range.

RESULTS

Electrical properties were found to barely vary over the frequency range. Removing the influence of the flip-angle excitation inhomogeneity was crucial, as expected. After such correction, measurements revealed a gain of SNR growing as B₀ ^{1.94 ± 0.16} compared with B₀ ^2.13 according to ultimate intrinsic SNR theory.

CONCLUSIONS

By using quasi-identical experimental setups (RF volume coil, phantom, electrical properties, and protocol), this work reports experimental data between 3 T and 11.7 T, enabling the comparison with SNR theories in which conductivity and permittivity can be assumed to be constant with respect to field strength. According to ultimate SNR theory, these results can be reasonably extrapolated to the performance of receive arrays with greater than about 32 elements for central SNR in the same spherical phantom.

Ultra-high field (10.5T) diffusion-weighted MRI of the macaque brain

Diffu0sion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides information about the barriers to the diffusion of water molecules in tissue. In the brain, this information can be used in several important ways, including to examine tissue abnormalities associated with brain disorders and to infer anatomical connectivity and the organization of white matter bundles through the use of tractography algorithms. However, dMRI also presents certain challenges. For example, historically, the biological validation of tractography models has shown only moderate correlations with anatomical connectivity as determined through invasive tract-tracing studies. Some of the factors contributing to such issues are low spatial resolution, low signal-to-noise ratios, and long scan times required for high-quality data, along with modeling challenges like complex fiber crossing patterns. Leveraging the capabilities provided by an ultra-high field scanner combined with denoising, we have acquired whole-brain, 0.58 mm isotropic resolution dMRI with a 2D-single shot echo planar imaging sequence on a 10.5 Tesla scanner in anesthetized macaques. These data produced high-quality tractograms and maps of scalar diffusion metrics in white matter. This work demonstrates the feasibility and motivation for in-vivo dMRI studies seeking to benefit from ultra-high fields.

Cortical layer-specific differences in stimulus selectivity revealed with high-field fMRI and single-vessel resolution optical imaging of the primary visual cortex

The mammalian neocortex exhibits a stereotypical laminar organization, with feedforward inputs arriving primarily into layer 4, local computations shaping response selectivity in layers 2/3, and outputs to other brain areas emanating via layers 2/3, 5 and 6. It cannot be assumed a priori that these signatures of laminar differences in neuronal circuitry are reflected in hemodynamic signals that form the basis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Indeed, optical imaging of single-vessel functional responses has highlighted the potential limits of using vascular signals as surrogates for mapping the selectivity of neural responses. Therefore, before fMRI can be employed as an effective tool for studying critical aspects of laminar processing, validation with single-vessel resolution is needed. The primary visual cortex (V1) in cats, with its precise neuronal functional micro-architecture, offers an ideal model system to examine laminar differences in stimulus selectivity across imaging modalities. Here we used cerebral blood volume weighted (wCBV) fMRI to examine if layer-specific orientation-selective responses could be detected in cat V1. We found orientation preference maps organized tangential to the cortical surface that typically extended across depth in a columnar fashion. We then examined arterial dilation and blood velocity responses to identical visual stimuli by using two- and three- photon optical imaging at single-vessel resolution-which provides a measure of the hemodynamic signals with the highest spatial resolution. Both fMRI and optical imaging revealed a consistent laminar response pattern in which orientation selectivity in cortical layer 4 was significantly lower compared to layer 2/3. This systematic change in selectivity across cortical layers has a clear underpinning in neural circuitry, particularly when comparing layer 4 to other cortical layers.

Ultra-High-Field MRI in the Diagnosis and Management of Gliomas: A Systematic Review

Importance:

Gliomas, tumors of the central nervous system, are classically diagnosed through invasive surgical biopsy and subsequent histopathological study. Innovations in ultra-high field (UHF) imaging, namely 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (7T MRI) are advancing preoperative tumor grading, visualization of intratumoral structures, and appreciation of small brain structures and lesions.

Objective

Summarize current innovative uses of UHF imaging techniques in glioma diagnostics and treatment.

Methods

A systematic review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines was performed utilizing PubMed. Case reports and series, observational clinical trials, and randomized clinical trials written in English were included. After removing unrelated studies and those with non-human subjects, only those related to 7T MRI were independently reviewed and summarized for data extraction. Some preclinical animal models are briefly described to demonstrate future usages of ultra-high-field imaging.

Results

We reviewed 46 studies (43 human and 3 animal models) which reported clinical usages of UHF MRI in the diagnosis and management of gliomas. Current literature generally supports greater resolution imaging from 7T compared to 1.5T or 3T MRI, improving visualization of cerebral microbleeds and white and gray matter, and providing more precise localization for radiotherapy targeting. Additionally, studies found that diffusion or susceptibility-weighted imaging techniques applied to 7T MRI, may be used to predict tumor grade, reveal intratumoral structures such as neovasculature and microstructures like axons, and indicate isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 mutation status in preoperative imaging. Similarly, newer imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy and chemical exchange saturation transfer imaging can be performed on 7T MRI to predict tumor grading and treatment efficacy. Geometrical distortion, a known challenge of 7T MRI, was at a tolerable level in all included studies.

Conclusion

UHF imaging has the potential to preoperatively and non-invasively grade gliomas, provide precise therapy target areas, and visualize lesions not seen on conventional MRI.

A Comparative Study of Birdcage RF Coil Configurations for Ultra-High Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Improvements in transmission and reception sensitivities of radiofrequency (RF) coils used in ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are needed to reduce specific absorption rates (SAR) and RF power deposition, albeit without applying high-power RF. Here, we propose a method to simultaneously improve transmission efficiency and reception sensitivity of a band-pass birdcage RF coil (BP-BC RF coil) by combining a multi-channel wireless RF element (MCWE) with a high permittivity material (HPM) in a 7.0 T MRI. Electromagnetic field (EM-field) simulations, performed using two types of phantoms, viz., a cylindrical phantom filled with oil and a human head model, were used to compare the effects of MCWE and HPM on BP-BC RF coils. EM-fields were calculated using the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method and analyzed using Matlab software. Next, to improve RF transmission efficiency, we compared two HPM structures, namely, a hollow cylinder shape HPM (hcHPM) and segmented cylinder shape HPM (scHPM). The scHPM and MCWE model comprised 16 elements (16-rad BP-BC RF coil) and this coil configuration demonstrated superior RF transmission efficiency and reception sensitivity along with an acceptable SAR. We expect wider clinical application of this combination in 7.0 T MRIs, which were recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

7 Tesla and Beyond: Advanced Methods and Clinical Applications in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

ABSTRACT

Ultrahigh magnetic fields offer significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio, and several magnetic resonance applications additionally benefit from a higher contrast-to-noise ratio, with static magnetic field strengths of B0 ≥ 7 T currently being referred to as ultrahigh fields (UHFs). The advantages of UHF can be used to resolve structures more precisely or to visualize physiological/pathophysiological effects that would be difficult or even impossible to detect at lower field strengths. However, with these advantages also come challenges, such as inhomogeneities applying standard radiofrequency excitation techniques, higher energy deposition in the human body, and enhanced B0 field inhomogeneities. The advantages but also the challenges of UHF as well as promising advanced methodological developments and clinical applications that particularly benefit from UHF are discussed in this review article.

A 16-Channel Dipole Antenna Array for Human Head Magnetic Resonance Imaging at 10.5 Tesla

For ultra-high field and frequency (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the associated short wavelengths in biological tissues leads to penetration and homogeneity issues at 10.5 tesla (T) and require antenna transmit arrays for efficiently generated 447 MHz B₁⁺ fields (defined as the transmit radiofrequency (RF) magnetic field generated by RF coils). Previously, we evaluated a 16-channel combined loop + dipole antenna (LD) 10.5 T head array. While the LD array configuration did not achieve the desired B₁⁺ efficiency, it showed an improvement of the specific absorption rate (SAR) efficiency compared to the separate 8-channel loop and separate 8-channel dipole antenna arrays at 10.5 T. Here we compare a 16-channel dipole antenna array with a 16-channel LD array of the same dimensions to evaluate B₁⁺ efficiency, 10 g SAR, and SAR efficiency. The 16-channel dipole antenna array achieved a 24% increase in B₁⁺ efficiency in the electromagnetic simulation and MR experiment compared to the LD array, as measured in the central region of a phantom. Based on the simulation results with a human model, we estimate that a 16-channel dipole antenna array for human brain imaging can increase B₁⁺ efficiency by 15% with similar SAR efficiency compared to a 16-channel LD head array.

Neuroimaging at 3T vs 7T: Is It Really Worth It?

Food and Drug Administration approval of 7T MR imaging allows ultrahigh-field neuroimaging to extend from the research realm into the clinical realm. Increased signal is clinically advantageous for smaller voxels and thereby high spatial resolution imaging, with additional advantages of increased tissue contrast. Susceptibility, time-of-flight signal, and blood oxygen level-dependent signal also have favorable clinical benefit from 7T. This article provides a survey of clinical cases showcasing some advantages of 7T.

Progress in Imaging the Human Torso at the Ultrahigh Fields of 7 and 10.5 T

Especially after the launch of 7 T, the ultrahigh magnetic field (UHF) imaging community achieved critically important strides in our understanding of the physics of radiofrequency interactions in the human body, which in turn has led to solutions for the challenges posed by such UHFs. As a result, the originally obtained poor image quality has progressed to the high-quality and high-resolution images obtained at 7 T and now at 10.5 T in the human torso. Despite these tremendous advances, work still remains to further improve the image quality and fully capitalize on the potential advantages UHF has to offer.

Evaluation of 8-Channel Radiative Antenna Arrays for Human Head Imaging at 10.5 Tesla

For human head magnetic resonance imaging at 10.5 tesla (T), we built an 8-channel transceiver dipole antenna array and evaluated the influence of coaxial feed cables. The influence of coaxial feed cables was evaluated in simulation and compared against a physically constructed array in terms of transmit magnetic field (B₁⁺) and specific absorption rate (SAR) efficiency. A substantial drop (23.1% in simulation and 20.7% in experiment) in B₁⁺ efficiency was observed with a tight coaxial feed cable setup. For the investigation of the feed location, the center-fed dipole antenna array was compared to two 8-channel end-fed arrays: monopole and sleeve antenna arrays. The simulation results with a phantom indicate that these arrays achieved ~24% higher SAR efficiency compared to the dipole antenna array. For a human head model, we observed 30.8% lower SAR efficiency with the 8-channel monopole antenna array compared to the phantom. Importantly, our simulation with the human model indicates that the sleeve antenna arrays can achieve 23.8% and 21% higher SAR efficiency compared to the dipole and monopole antenna arrays, respectively. Finally, we obtained high-resolution human cadaver images at 10.5 T with the 8-channel sleeve antenna array.

Displacement current distribution on a high dielectric constant helmet and its effect on RF field at 10.5 T (447 MHz)

PURPOSE

Investigating the designs and effects of high dielectric constant (HDC) materials in the shape of a conformal helmet on the enhancement of RF field and reduction of specific absorption rate at 10.5 T for human brain studies.

METHODS

A continuous and a segmented four-piece HDC helmet fit to a human head inside an eight-channel fractionated-dipole array were constructed and studied with a phantom and a human head model using computer electromagnetic simulations. The simulated transmit efficiency and receive sensitivity were experimentally validated using a phantom with identical electric properties and helmet-coil configurations of the computer model. The temporal and spatial distributions of displacement currents on the HDC helmets were analyzed.

RESULTS

Using the continuous HDC helmet, simulation results in the human head model demonstrated an average transmit efficiency enhancement of 66%. A propagating displacement current was induced on the continuous helmet, leading to an inhomogeneous RF field enhancement in the brain. Using the segmented four-piece helmet design to reduce this effect, an average 55% and 57% enhancement in the transmit efficiency and SNR was achieved in human head, respectively, along with 8% and 28% reductions in average and maximum local specific absorption rate.

CONCLUSION

The HDC helmets enhanced the transmit efficiency and SNR of the dipole array coil in the human head at 10.5 T. The segmentation of the helmet to disrupt the continuity of circumscribing displacement currents in the helmet produced a more uniform distribution of the transmit field and lower specific absorption rate in the human head compared with the continuous helmet design.

ULTRAHIGH FIELD and ULTRAHIGH RESOLUTION fMRI

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become one of the most powerful tools for investigating the human brain. Ultrahigh magnetic field (UHF) of 7 Tesla has played a critical role in enabling higher resolution and more accurate (relative to the neuronal activity) functional maps. However, even with these gains, the fMRI approach is challenged relative to the spatial scale over which brain function is organized. Therefore, going forward, significant advances in fMRI are still needed. Such advances will predominantly come from magnetic fields significantly higher than 7 Tesla, which is the most commonly used UHF platform today, and additional technologies that will include developments in pulse sequences, image reconstruction, noise suppression, and image analysis in order to further enhance and augment the gains than can be realized by going to higher magnetic fields.

Comparison of 16-Channel Asymmetric Sleeve Antenna and Dipole Antenna Transceiver Arrays at 10.5 Tesla MRI

Multi-element transmit arrays with low peak 10 g specific absorption rate (SAR) and high SAR efficiency (defined as ( [Formula: see text]SAR [Formula: see text] are essential for ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. Recently, the adaptation of dipole antennas used as MRI coil elements in multi-channel arrays has provided the community with a technological solution capable of producing uniform images and low SAR efficiency at these high field strengths. However, human head-sized arrays consisting of dipole elements have a practical limitation to the number of channels that can be used due to radiofrequency (RF) coupling between the antenna elements, as well as, the coaxial cables necessary to connect them. Here we suggest an asymmetric sleeve antenna as an alternative to the dipole antenna. When used in an array as MRI coil elements, the asymmetric sleeve antenna can generate reduced peak 10 g SAR and improved SAR efficiency. To demonstrate the advantages of an array consisting of our suggested design, we compared various performance metrics produced by 16-channel arrays of asymmetric sleeve antennas and dipole antennas with the same dimensions. Comparison data were produced on a phantom in electromagnetic (EM) simulations and verified with experiments at 10.5 Tesla (T). The results produced by the 16-channel asymmetric sleeve antenna array demonstrated 28 % lower peak 10 g SAR and 18.6 % higher SAR efficiency when compared to the 16-channel dipole antenna array.

A self-decoupled 32-channel receive array for human-brain MRI at 10.5 T

PURPOSE

Receive array layout, noise mitigation, and B₀ field strength are crucial contributors to SNR and parallel-imaging performance. Here, we investigate SNR and parallel-imaging gains at 10.5 T compared with 7 T using 32-channel receive arrays at both fields.

METHODS

A self-decoupled 32-channel receive array for human brain imaging at 10.5 T (10.5T-32Rx), consisting of 31 loops and one cloverleaf element, was co-designed and built in tandem with a 16-channel dual-row loop transmitter. Novel receive array design and self-decoupling techniques were implemented. Parallel imaging performance, in terms of SNR and noise amplification (g-factor), of the 10.5T-32Rx was compared with the performance of an industry-standard 32-channel receiver at 7 T (7T-32Rx) through experimental phantom measurements.

RESULTS

Compared with the 7T-32Rx, the 10.5T-32Rx provided 1.46 times the central SNR and 2.08 times the peripheral SNR. Minimum inverse g-factor value of the 10.5T-32Rx (min[1/g] = 0.56) was 51% higher than that of the 7T-32Rx (min[1/g] = 0.37) with R = 4 × 4 2D acceleration, resulting in significantly enhanced parallel-imaging performance at 10.5 T compared with 7 T. The g-factor values of 10.5 T-32 Rx were on par with those of a 64-channel receiver at 7 T (eg, 1.8 vs 1.9, respectively, with R = 4 × 4 axial acceleration).

CONCLUSION

Experimental measurements demonstrated effective self-decoupling of the receive array as well as substantial gains in SNR and parallel-imaging performance at 10.5 T compared with 7 T.

Generation of acoustic-Brownian noise in nuclear magnetic resonance under non-equilibrium thermal fluctuations

We present an analytical study on generation of acoustic-Brownian noise in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) induced as a result of thermal fluctuations of the magnetic moments under non-equilibrium thermal interactions which has not been explored independent of Nyquist–Johnson noise until now. The mechanism of physical coupling between non-equilibrium thermal fluctuations and magnetic moments is illustrated using Lighthill’s formulation on suspension dynamics. We discover that unlike Nyquist–Johnson noise which has a uniform spectral density across a range of frequencies, the spectral dependence of acoustic-Brownian noise decreases with an increase in frequency and resembles Brownian noise associated with a particle in a potential well. The results have applications in the field of image enhancement algorithm as well as noise reduction instrumentation in NMR systems.

Ultra-high field (10.5 T) resting state fMRI in the macaque

Resting state functional connectivity refers to the temporal correlations between spontaneous hemodynamic signals obtained using functional magnetic resonance imaging. This technique has demonstrated that the structure and dynamics of identifiable networks are altered in psychiatric and neurological disease states. Thus, resting state network organizations can be used as a diagnostic, or prognostic recovery indicator. However, much about the physiological basis of this technique is unknown. Thus, providing a translational bridge to an optimal animal model, the macaque, in which invasive circuit manipulations are possible, is of utmost importance. Current approaches to resting state measurements in macaques face unique challenges associated with signal-to-noise, the need for contrast agents limiting translatability, and within-subject designs. These limitations can, in principle, be overcome through ultra-high magnetic fields. However, imaging at magnetic fields above 7T has yet to be adapted for fMRI in macaques. Here, we demonstrate that the combination of high channel count transmitter and receiver arrays, optimized pulse sequences, and careful anesthesia regimens, allows for detailed single-subject resting state analysis at high resolutions using a 10.5 Tesla scanner. In this study, we uncover thirty spatially detailed resting state components that are highly robust across individual macaques and closely resemble the quality and findings of connectomes from large human datasets. This detailed map of the rsfMRI 'macaque connectome' will be the basis for future neurobiological circuit manipulation work, providing valuable biological insights into human connectomics.

Evaluation of a 16-channel transceiver loop + dipole antenna array for human head imaging at 10.5 tesla

We evaluated a 16-channel loop + dipole (LD) transceiver antenna array with improved specific absorption rate (SAR) efficiency for 10.5 Tesla (T) human head imaging apsplications. Three different array designs with equal inner dimensions were considered: an 8-channel dipole antenna, an 8-channel loop, and a 16-channel LD antenna arrays. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and B1 + efficiency (in units of μT per √W) were simulated and measured in 10.5 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments. For the safety validation, 10 g SAR and SAR efficiency (defined as the B1 + over √ (peak 10 g SAR)) were calculated through simulation. Finally, high resolution porcine brain images were acquired with the 16-channel LD antenna array, including a fast turbo-spin echo (TSE) sequence incorporating B1 shimming techniques. Both the simulation and experiments demonstrated that the combined 16-channel LD antenna array showed similar B1 + efficiency compared to the 8-channel dipole antenna and the 8-channel loop arrays in a circular polarized (CP) mode. In a central 2 mm × 2 mm region of the phantom, however, the 16-channel LD antenna array showed an improvement in peak 10 g SAR of 27.5 % and 32.5 % over the 8-channel dipole antenna and the 8-channel loop arrays, respectively. We conclude that the proposed 16-channel head LD antenna array design is capable of achieving ~7% higher SAR efficiency at 10.5 T compared to either the 8-channel loop-only or the 8-channel dipole-only antenna arrays of the same dimensions.

Numerical and Workbench Design of 2.35 T Double-Tuned (¹H/²³Na) Nested RF Birdcage Coils Suitable for Animal Size MRI

The birdcage Radio Frequency (RF) coil is one of the most used configurations in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners for the detection of the proton (¹H) signal over a large homogeneous volume. More recently, birdcage RF coils have been successfully used also in the field of X-nuclei MRI, where the signal of a second nucleus (e.g. ¹³C, ²³Na, ³¹P, and many others) needs to be detected with high sensitivity and spatial homogeneity. To this purpose several technical solutions have been adopted to design Double Tuned (DT) volume RF coils, including the recent configuration of the nested birdcage RF coils. One of the main problems in the design of DT RF coils is the decoupling between the ¹H and X channels, and a number of solutions have been adopted over the years. In this work, based on numerical and workbench methods, we report the decoupling optimization of DT (¹H/²³Na) nested RF birdcage coils suitable for 2.35 T MRI scanners encompassing an inner Low-Pass (LP) birdcage used for X-nuclei, an outer High-Pass (HP) birdcage for ¹H and an external cylindrical RF shield. We show that a suitable geometrical selection of the two coaxial RF birdcage coils (relative angular orientation, diameters and lengths) and RF shield (diameter, length) allows a significant decoupling optimization. We also provide valuable information about the RF B₁⁺ field homogeneity and efficiency. Our approach was validated both with numerical simulations and workbench testing using DT nested RF coil prototypes.

Frontiers of Sodium MRI Revisited: From Cartilage to Brain Imaging

Sodium magnetic resonance imaging (²³ Na-MRI) is a highly promising imaging modality that offers the possibility to noninvasively quantify sodium content in the tissue, one of the most relevant parameters for biochemical investigations. Despite its great potential, due to the intrinsically low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of sodium imaging generated by low in vivo sodium concentrations, low gyromagnetic ratio, and substantially shorter relaxation times than for proton (¹ H) imaging, ²³ Na-MRI is extremely challenging. In this article, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature that has been published in the last 10-15 years and which has demonstrated different technical designs for a range of ²³ Na-MRI methods applicable for disease diagnoses and treatment efficacy evaluations. Currently, a wider use of 3.0T and 7.0T systems provide imaging with the expected increase in SNR and, consequently, an increased image resolution and a reduced scanning time. A great interest in translational research has enlarged the field of sodium MRI applications to almost all parts of the body: articular cartilage tendons, spine, heart, breast, muscle, kidney, and brain, etc., and several pathological conditions, such as tumors, neurological and degenerative diseases, and others. The quantitative parameter, tissue sodium concentration, which reflects changes in intracellular sodium concentration, extracellular sodium concentration, and intra-/extracellular volume fractions is becoming acknowledged as a reliable biomarker. Although the great potential of this technique is evident, there must be steady technical development for ²³ Na-MRI to become a standard imaging tool. The future role of sodium imaging is not to be considered as an alternative to ¹ H MRI, but to provide early, diagnostically valuable information about altered metabolism or tissue function associated with disease genesis and progression. 10.5 T MRI static field effects on human cognitive, vestibular, and physiological function

PURPOSE

To perform a pilot study to quantitatively assess cognitive, vestibular, and physiological function during and after exposure to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system with a static field strength of 10.5 Tesla at multiple time scales.

METHODS

A total of 29 subjects were exposed to a 10.5 T MRI field and underwent vestibular, cognitive, and physiological testing before, during, and after exposure; for 26 subjects, testing and exposure were repeated within 2-4 weeks of the first visit. Subjects also reported sensory perceptions after each exposure. Comparisons were made between short and long term time points in the study with respect to the parameters measured in the study; short term comparison included pre-vs-isocenter and pre-vs-post (1-24 h), while long term compared pre-exposures 2-4 weeks apart.

RESULTS

Of the 79 comparisons, 73 parameters were unchanged or had small improvements after magnet exposure. The exceptions to this included lower scores on short term (i.e. same day) executive function testing, greater isocenter spontaneous eye movement during visit 1 (relative to pre-exposure), increased number of abnormalities on videonystagmography visit 2 versus visit 1 and a mix of small increases (short term visit 2) and decreases (short term visit 1) in blood pressure. In addition, more subjects reported metallic taste at 10.5 T in comparison to similar data obtained in previous studies at 7 T and 9.4 T.

CONCLUSION

Initial results of 10.5 T static field exposure indicate that 1) cognitive performance is not compromised at isocenter, 2) subjects experience increased eye movement at isocenter, and 3) subjects experience small changes in vital signs but no field-induced increase in blood pressure. While small but significant differences were found in some comparisons, none were identified as compromising subject safety. A modified testing protocol informed by these results was devised with the goal of permitting increased enrollment while providing continued monitoring to evaluate field effects.
