The effect of amplitude modulation on subharmonic imaging with chirp excitation

Low Thermal Conductivity Materials and Very Low Heat Power: A Demanding Challenge in the Detection of Flaws in Multi-Layer Wooden Cultural Heritage Objects Solved by Pulse-Compression Thermography Technique

An inlay sample with artificial defects was inspected via the pulse-compression thermography (PuCT) technique. The sample belongs to the cultural heritage field, and it was realized by a professional restorer based on his long-time experience, imitating historical art crafting styles. The tesserae composing the inlay were not treated by any protective paints, so that external thermal stimuli may cause physical/mechanical alterations of the cell walls, with consequent colour changes, cracks, and eventually damage to its surface. To avoid any alteration of the sample, the PuCT technique was used for inspecting the inlay sample as it allows the heating power to be very low, while assuring enough thermal contrast for the defects to be detected after the exploitation of the pulse-compression algorithm. Even if a maximum ΔT slightly exceeding 1 °C was detected during the PuCT test of the inlay sample, it is shown that this is enough for detecting several defects. Further, image processing based on the Hilbert transform increases defect detection and characterization. In addition, a novel normalization technique, i.e., a pixel-by-pixel data normalization with respect to the absorbance estimated by considering a characteristic value of the compression peak, is introduced here for the first time. The proposed normalization enhances the defect detection capability with respect to the standard pixel-by-pixel amplitude visualization. This has been demonstrated for two experimental setups, both exploiting the same LED chips system as heating source but different thermal camera sensors, i.e., one in the mid-infrared spectrum, the other in the far infrared one. Thus, the present work is also the first small-scale test of a future portable system that will include low-power LED chip feed in DC by metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) devices, and a handy far-infrared camera.

Ultrasonic Propagation in Highly Attenuating Insulation Materials

Experiments have been performed to demonstrate that ultrasound in the 100-400 kHz frequency range can be used to propagate signals through various types of industrial insulation. This is despite the fact that they are highly attenuating to ultrasonic signals due to scattering and viscoelastic effects. The experiments used a combination of piezocomposite transducers and pulse compression processing. This combination allowed signal-to-noise levels to be enhanced so that signals reflected from the surface of an insulated and cladded steel pipe could be obtained.

Delamination Detection in Polymeric Ablative Materials Using Pulse-Compression Thermography and Air-Coupled Ultrasound

Ablative materials are used extensively in the aerospace industry for protection against high thermal stresses and temperatures, an example being glass/silicone composites. The extreme conditions faced and the cost-risk related to the production/operating stage of such high-tech materials indicate the importance of detecting any anomaly or defect arising from the manufacturing process. In this paper, two different non-destructive testing techniques, namely active thermography and ultrasonic testing, have been used to detect a delamination in a glass/silicone composite. It is shown that a frequency modulated chirp signal and pulse-compression can successfully be used in active thermography for detecting such a delamination. Moreover, the same type of input signal and post-processing can be used to generate an image using air-coupled ultrasound, and an interesting comparison between the two can be made to further characterise the defect.

Orthogonal Chirp Coded Excitation in a Capacitive Micro-machined Ultrasonic Transducer Array for Ultrasound Imaging: A Feasibility Study

It has been reported that the frequency bandwidth of capacitive micro-machined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) is relatively broader than that of other ceramic-based conventional ultrasonic transducers. In this paper, a feasibility study for orthogonal chirp coded excitation to efficiently make use of the wide bandwidth characteristic of CMUT array is presented. The experimental result shows that the two orthogonal chirps mixed and simultaneously fired in CMUT array can be perfectly separated in decoding process of the received echo signal without sacrificing the frequency bandwidth each chirp. The experimental study also shows that frequency band-divided orthogonal chirps are successfully compressed to two short pulses having the -6 dB axial beam-width of 0.26- and 0.31-micro second for high frequency and low frequency chirp, respectively. B-mode image simulations are performed using Field II to estimate the improvement of image quality assuming that the orthogonal chirps designed for the experiments are used for simultaneous transmission multiple-zone focusing (STMF) technique. The simulation results show that the STMF technique used in CMUT array can improve the lateral resolution up to 77.1% and the contrast resolution up to 74.7%, respectively. It is shown that the penetration depth also increases by more than 3 cm.

HIFU Drive System Miniaturization Using Harmonic Reduced Pulsewidth Modulation

Switched excitation has the potential to improve on the cost, efficiency, and size of the linear amplifier circuitry currently used in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) systems. Existing switching schemes are impaired by high harmonic distortion or lack array apodisation capability, so require adjustable supplies and/or large power filters to be useful. A multilevel pulsewidth modulation (PWM) topology could address both of these issues but the switching-speed limitations of transistors mean that there are a limited number of pulses available in each waveform cycle. In this study, harmonic reduction PWM (HRPWM) is proposed as an algorithmic solution to the design of switched waveforms. Its appropriateness for HIFU was assessed by design of a high power five-level unfiltered amplifier and subsequent thermal-only lesioning of ex vivo chicken breast. Three switched waveforms of different electrical powers (16, 26, 35 W) were generated using the HRPWM algorithm. Lesion sizes were measured and compared with those made at the same electrical power using a linear amplifier and bi-level excitation. HRPWM produced symmetric, thermal-only lesions that were the same size as their linear amplifier equivalents ( ). At 16 W, bi-level excitation produced smaller lesions but at higher power levels large transients in the acoustic waveform nucleated undesired cavitation. These results demonstrate that HRPWM can minimize HIFU drive circuity size without the need for filters to remove harmonics or adjustable power supplies to achieve array apodisation.

Combining Acoustic Trapping With Plane Wave Imaging for Localized Microbubble Accumulation in Large Vessels

The capability of accumulating microbubbles using ultrasound could be beneficial for enhancing targeted drug delivery. When microbubbles are used to deliver a therapeutic payload, there is a need to track them, for a localized release of the payload. In this paper, a method for localizing microbubble accumulation with fast image guidance is presented. A linear array transducer performed trapping of microbubble populations interleaved with plane wave imaging, through the use of a composite pulse sequence. The acoustic trap in the pressure field was created parallel with the direction of flow in a model of a vessel section. The acoustic trapping force resultant from the large gradients in the acoustic field was engendered to directly oppose the flowing microbubbles. This was demonstrated numerically with field simulations, and experimentally using an Ultrasound Array Research Platform II. SonoVue microbubbles at clinically relevant concentrations were pumped through a tissue-mimicking flow phantom and exposed to either the acoustic trap or a control ultrasonic field composed of a single-peak acoustic radiation force beam. Under the flow condition at a shear rate of 433 s^-1, the use of the acoustic trap led to lower speed estimations ( ) in the center of the acoustic field, and an enhancement of 71% ± 28%( ) in microbubble image brightness.

Ultrasound Open Platforms for Next-Generation Imaging Technique Development

Open platform (OP) ultrasound systems are aimed primarily at the research community. They have been at the forefront of the development of synthetic aperture, plane wave, shear wave elastography, and vector flow imaging. Such platforms are driven by a need for broad flexibility of parameters that are normally preset or fixed within clinical scanners. OP ultrasound scanners are defined to have three key features including customization of the transmit waveform, access to the prebeamformed receive data, and the ability to implement real-time imaging. In this paper, a formative discussion is given on the development of OPs from both the research community and the commercial sector. Both software- and hardware-based architectures are considered, and their specifications are compared in terms of resources and programmability. Software-based platforms capable of real-time beamforming generally make use of scalable graphics processing unit architectures, whereas a common feature of hardware-based platforms is the use of field-programmable gate array and digital signal processor devices to provide additional on-board processing capacity. OPs with extended number of channels (>256) are also discussed in relation to their role in supporting 3-D imaging technique development. With the increasing maturity of OP ultrasound scanners, the pace of advancement in ultrasound imaging algorithms is poised to be accelerated.

A New Dynamic Complex Baseband Pulse Compression Method for Chirp-Coded Excitation in Medical Ultrasound Imaging

Chirp-coded excitation can increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) without degrading the axial resolution. Effective pulse compression (PC) is important to maintain the axial resolution and can be achieved with radio frequency (RF) and complex baseband (CBB) data (i.e., and , respectively). can further reduce the computational complexity compared to ; however, suffers from a degraded SNR due to tissue attenuation. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic CBB PC method ( that can improve the SNR while compensating for tissue attenuation. The compression filter coefficients in the method are generated by dynamically changing the demodulation frequencies along with the depth. For PC, the obtained coefficients are independently applied to the in-phase and quadrature components of the CBB data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, simulation, phantom, and in vivo studies were conducted, and all three studies showed improved SNR, i.e., maximally 3.87, 7.41, and 5.75 dB, respectively. In addition, the measured peak range sidelobe level of the proposed method yielded lower values than the and , and it also derived a suitable target location, i.e., a <0.07-mm target location error, while maintaining the axial resolution. In an in vivo abdominal experiment, the method depicted brighter and clearer features in the hyperechoic region because highly correlated signals were produced by compensating for tissue attenuation. These results demonstrated that the proposed method can improve the SNR of chirp-coded excitation while preserving the axial resolution and the target location and reducing the computational complexity.

Combining Subharmonic and Ultraharmonic Modes for Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging: A Preliminary Evaluation

Contrast-enhanced intra-vascular ultrasound (CE-IVUS) imaging could provide clinicians a valuable tool to assess cardiovascular risk and guide the choice of therapeutic strategies. In this technical note, we evaluated the feasibility of combining subharmonic and ultraharmonic imaging to improve the performance of CE-IVUS. Vessel phantoms perfused with phospholipid-shelled ultrasound contrast agents were visualized using subharmonic, ultraharmonic and combined CE-IVUS modes with commercial peripheral and coronary imaging catheters. Flow channels as small as 0.8 mm and 0.5 mm were imaged at 12-MHz and 30-MHz transmit frequencies, respectively. Subharmonic and ultraharmonic imaging modes achieved a contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR) up to 18.1 ± 1.8 dB and 19.6 ± 1.9 dB at 12-MHz, and 8.8 ± 1.8 and 12.5 ± 1.1 dB at 30-MHz transmit frequencies, respectively. Combining these modes improved the CTR to 32.5 ± 3.0 dB and 25.0 ± 1.6 dB at 12-MHz and 30-MHz transmit frequencies. These results underscore the potential of combined-mode CE-IVUS imaging. Furthermore, the demonstration of this approach with commercial catheters may serve as a first step toward the clinical translation of CE-IVUS.

Investigation of Non-linear Chirp Coding for Improved Second Harmonic Pulse Compression

Non-linear frequency-modulated (NLFM) chirp coding was investigated to improve the pulse compression of the second harmonic chirp signal by reducing the range side lobe level. The problem of spectral overlap between the fundamental component and second harmonic component (SHC) was also investigated. Therefore, two methods were proposed: method I for the non-overlap condition and method II with the pulse inversion technique for the overlap harmonic condition. In both methods, the performance of the NLFM chirp was compared with that of the reference LFM chirp signals. Experiments were performed using a 2.25 MHz transducer mounted coaxially at a distance of 5 cm with a 1 mm hydrophone in a water tank, and the peak negative pressure of 300 kPa was set at the receiver. Both simulations and experimental results revealed that the peak side lobe level (PSL) of the compressed SHC of the NLFM chirp was improved by at least 13 dB in method I and 5 dB in method II when compared with the PSL of LFM chirps. Similarly, the integrated side lobe level (ISL) of the compressed SHC of the NLFM chirp was improved by at least 8 dB when compared with the ISL of LFM chirps. In both methods, the axial main lobe width of the compressed NLFM chirp was comparable to that of the LFM signals. The signal-to-noise ratio of the SHC of NLFM was improved by as much as 0.8 dB, when compared with the SHC of the LFM signal having the same energy level. The results also revealed the robustness of the NLFM chirp under a frequency-dependent attenuation of 0.5 dB/cm·MHz up to a penetration depth of 5 cm and a Doppler shift up to 12 kHz.

An Adaptive Array Excitation Scheme for the Unidirectional Enhancement of Guided Waves

Control over the direction of wave propagation allows an engineer to spatially locate defects. When imaging with longitudinal waves, time delays can be applied to each element of a phased array transducer to steer a beam. Because of the highly dispersive nature of guided waves (GWs), this beamsteering approach is suboptimal. More appropriate time delays can be chosen to direct a GW if the dispersion relation of the material is known. Existing techniques, however, need a priori knowledge of material thickness and acoustic velocity, which change as a function of temperature and strain. The scheme presented here does not require prior knowledge of the dispersion relation or properties of the specimen to direct a GW. Initially, a GW is generated using a single element of an array transducer. The acquired waveforms from the remaining elements are then processed and retransmitted, constructively interfering with the wave as it travels across the spatial influence of the transducer. The scheme intrinsically compensates for the dispersion of the waves, and thus can adapt to changes in material thickness and acoustic velocity. The proposed technique is demonstrated in simulation and experimentally. Dispersion curves from either side of the array are acquired to demonstrate the scheme's ability to direct a GW in an aluminum plate. The results show that unidirectional enhancement is possible without a priori knowledge of the specimen using an arbitrary pitch array transducer. The experimental results show a 34-dB enhancement in one direction compared with the other.

Characterisation of Liposome-Loaded Microbubble Populations for Subharmonic Imaging

Therapeutic microbubbles could make an important contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Acoustic characterisation was performed on microfluidic generated microbubble populations that either were bare or had liposomes attached. Through the use of broadband attenuation techniques (3-8 MHz), the shell stiffness was measured to be 0.72 ± 0.01 and 0.78 ± 0.05 N/m and shell friction was 0.37 ± 0.05 and 0.74 ± 0.05 × 10^-6 kg/s for bare and liposome-loaded microbubbles, respectively. Acoustic scatter revealed that liposome-loaded microbubbles had a lower subharmonic threshold, occurring from a peak negative pressure of 50 kPa, compared with 200 kPa for equivalent bare microbubbles. It was found that liposome loading had a negligible effect on the destruction threshold for this microbubble type, because at a mechanical index >0.4 (570 kPa), 80% of both populations were destroyed.

Ultrasonic propagation in finite-length granular chains

A narrowband ultrasound source has been used to generate solitary wave impulses in finite-length chains of spheres. Once the input signal is of sufficient amplitude, both harmonics and sub-harmonics of the input frequency can be generated as non-linear normal modes of the system, allowing a train of impulses to be established from a sinusoidal input. The characteristics of the response have been studied as a function of the physical properties of the chain, the input waveform and the level of static pre-compression. The results agree with the predictions of a theoretical model, based on a set of discrete dynamic equations for the spheres for finite-length chains. Impulses are only created for very small pre-compression forces of the order of 0.01N, where strongly non-linear behaviour is expected.

Subharmonic, non-linear fundamental and ultraharmonic imaging of microbubble contrast at high frequencies

There is increasing use of ultrasound contrast agent in high-frequency ultrasound imaging. However, conventional contrast detection methods perform poorly at high frequencies. We performed systematic in vitro comparisons of subharmonic, non-linear fundamental and ultraharmonic imaging for different depths and ultrasound contrast agent concentrations (Vevo 2100 system with MS250 probe and MicroMarker ultrasound contrast agent, VisualSonics, Toronto, ON, Canada). We investigated 4-, 6- and 10-cycle bursts at three power levels with the following pulse sequences: B-mode, amplitude modulation, pulse inversion and combined pulse inversion/amplitude modulation. The contrast-to-tissue (CTR) and contrast-to-artifact (CAR) ratios were calculated. At a depth of 8 mm, subharmonic pulse-inversion imaging performed the best (CTR = 26 dB, CAR = 18 dB) and at 16 mm, non-linear amplitude modulation imaging was the best contrast imaging method (CTR = 10 dB). Ultraharmonic imaging did not result in acceptable CTRs and CARs. The best candidates from the in vitro study were tested in vivo in chicken embryo and mouse models, and the results were in a good agreement with the in vitro findings.

Superharmonic imaging with chirp coded excitation: filtering spectrally overlapped harmonics

Superharmonic imaging improves the spatial resolution by using the higher order harmonics generated in tissue. The superharmonic component is formed by combining the third, fourth, and fifth harmonics, which have low energy content and therefore poor SNR. This study uses coded excitation to increase the excitation energy. The SNR improvement is achieved on the receiver side by performing pulse compression with harmonic matched filters. The use of coded signals also introduces new filtering capabilities that are not possible with pulsed excitation. This is especially important when using wideband signals. For narrowband signals, the spectral boundaries of the harmonics are clearly separated and thus easy to filter; however, the available imaging bandwidth is underused. Wideband excitation is preferable for harmonic imaging applications to preserve axial resolution, but it generates spectrally overlapping harmonics that are not possible to filter in time and frequency domains. After pulse compression, this overlap increases the range side lobes, which appear as imaging artifacts and reduce the Bmode image quality. In this study, the isolation of higher order harmonics was achieved in another domain by using the fan chirp transform (FChT). To show the effect of excitation bandwidth in superharmonic imaging, measurements were performed by using linear frequency modulated chirp excitation with varying bandwidths of 10% to 50%. Superharmonic imaging was performed on a wire phantom using a wideband chirp excitation. Results were presented with and without applying the FChT filtering technique by comparing the spatial resolution and side lobe levels. Wideband excitation signals achieved a better resolution as expected, however range side lobes as high as -23 dB were observed for the superharmonic component of chirp excitation with 50% fractional bandwidth. The proposed filtering technique achieved >50 dB range side lobe suppression and improved the image quality without affecting the axial resolution.
