Abstract
In recent years, there has been a surge in the production of kombucha-a functional beverage obtained via microbial fermentation of tea. However, fresh, unpasteurized kombucha is sensitive to quality deterioration as a result of, among other factors, oxidation. The addition of hops seems to be promising, due to their antioxidative properties, which may improve the stability of kombucha. However, aiming at retaining the highest antioxidative properties of kombucha, it remains unclear at which stage of the production process hops should be added. The study investigated the effect of hop supplementation during kombucha production on the basic physicochemical, antioxidative, and sensory properties of kombucha. Cascade hops in the concentrations 0.5 and 2 g/L were added at the onset of tea infusion and to the fresh, unpasteurized kombucha. The addition of hops (particularly at the pre-fermentation stage of production) led to a significant decrease in radical formation in the produced kombucha measured by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), which correlated with the higher DPPH antiradical activity and the elevated bitter α-acid content. From the sensory perspective, the post-fermentation addition of hops to kombucha resulted in a significantly higher rating of the overall quality. This enhancement was directly associated with heightened bitterness, increased presence of fruity and citrusy aromas, and a simultaneous reduction in the intensities of acetic and tea-related attributes. The data presented in this study are relevant for kombucha producers, who want to deliver a sensory-novel product in combination with an improved oxidative stability. KEY POINTS: • Hop addition in kombucha production improves the antioxidative activity of the beverage. • Hop α-acids display higher antioxidative properties in kombucha than polyphenols. • Oxidative stability of kombucha fortified with hops depends on the timing of hops addition. • Hop addition enriches the taste and aroma attributes of kombucha.

Abstract
The study evaluated the anti-hyperlipidemic effects of myrcenol and curzerene on a high fat diet induced hyperlipidemia rat model. Thirty male albino rats were fed on a high-fat diet for four months. The HFD-induced hyperperlipidemia rats were treated with rosuvastatin (10 mg/kg), curzerene (130 mg/kg) and myrcenol (100 mg/kg) for four weeks. Blood samples were collected for further analysis. Aorta and heart were harvested for histopathological evaluation. Hepatic lipase and HMG-CoA reductase were determined by ELISA. FST and Y-maze tests were performed to assess the stress level in hyperlipidemia rats. The phytochemical compounds (Curzerene and Myrcenol) and the standard drug (Rosuvastatin) resulted in decreased body weight as well as reduced levels of LDL, TG, TC, AST and ALT as compared to the diseased group. Additionally, the treated groups displayed improved HDL levels and less depressed behavior. The ELISA results revealed that the Curzerene and myrcenol had significantly increased the protein concentration of hepatic lipase than the diseased group whereas both compounds significantly lowered the HMG-CoA reductase concentrations compared to the diseased group. The findings suggested that myrcenol and curzerene had the potential to be therapeutic agents for managing hyperlipidemia and reducing the risk of heart-related conditions associated with high lipid levels.

Abstract
Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are widely recognized for their use in brewing, but they also possess significant pharmacological properties due to their rich bioactive compounds, with many varieties exhibiting diverse characteristics. This study investigates the chemical composition and biological activities of extracts from six hop varieties, focusing on quantifying xanthohumol and lupulone using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Total Phenolic Content (TPC) analysis. The hop varieties demonstrated significant variability in bioactive compound concentrations, with Aurora showing the highest xanthohumol (0.665 mg/g) and Zwiegniowski the highest lupulone (9.228 mg/g). TPC analysis revealed Aurora also had the highest phenolic content (22.47 mg GAE/g). Antioxidant activities were evaluated using DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP assays, with Aurora and Oregon Fuggle displaying the most potent capacities. Aurora, in particular, showed the highest activity across multiple assays, including significant acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and tyrosinase inhibition, with IC50 values of 24.39 mg/mL, 20.38 mg/mL, and 9.37 mg/mL, respectively. The chelating activity was also assessed, with Apolon demonstrating the strongest metal ion binding capacity (IC50 = 1.04 mg/mL). Additionally, Aurora exhibited the most effective hyaluronidase inhibition (IC50 = 10.27 mg/mL), highlighting its potential for anti-inflammatory applications. The results underscore the influence of genetic and environmental factors on the bioactive compound profiles of hop varieties and their biological activity offering promising avenues for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. However, further studies are needed to fully understand the potential interactions between hop cones components.

Abstract
Cohumulone and colupulone are representatives of α- and β-acids, respectively. These compounds are important antimicrobial hop (Humulus lupulus) constituents, where cohumulone is an important source of the bitter taste of beer. In this study, we examined the pH dependence of UV/Vis spectra of both compounds while CD spectra of cohumulone were also measured at various wavelengths. This facilitated the examination of the protolytic equilibrium of both compounds, where the second pKa value of cohumulone was determined for the first time. Additionally, comparing experimental spectra with spectra calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) enabled the determination of the most likely deprotonation positions and corresponding species most likely present in the aqueous solution at various pH values. Last but not least, comparing calculated and experimental CD spectra of cohumulone facilitated the determination of the absolute stereoconfiguration of cohumulone.

Abstract
With the rapid growth of the world's population, the demand for food is also increasing. Poultry accounts for 40% of the global meat sector and therefore represents a significant area for further growth. One starting point for increasing production is to refine the composition of feed to improve the efficiency of growth and nutrient utilization, prevent disease and at the same time reduce environmental impact. Similar considerations have led to the long-standing sub-therapeutic use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal husbandry, which is associated with the threat of rising antimicrobial resistances and the resulting consequences for human and animal health. In order to circumvent these drawbacks, an increasing number of alternative feed additives are becoming more prevalent. The use of phytogenic feed additives, which includes hops (Humulus lupulus), is regarded as a viable alternative. In addition to its natural availability, hops have been demonstrated to exhibit antimicrobial effects and there is increasing evidence of growth-promoting effects in vivo. © 2024 The Author(s). Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of temperature on the potential extraction of bioactive compounds from aqueous hop extract samples. The main bioactive components were characterised and analysed by LC-MS/MS, FT-IR, phenolic compounds and total flavonoids. Antifungal activity was evaluated in vitro and in vivo in bell peppers. LC-MS/MS analysis demonstrated increases and decreases of bioactive compounds in both extracts depending on the extraction temperature of 25 or 65 °C. The bioactive compounds showed significant changes in the bands between 2786 to 3600 cm-1 and 1022 to 1729 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum. The highest antifungal activity against the microorganisms was observed in the EkuanotMT extract at an extraction temperature of 65 °C. The in vivo test with bell peppers presented antifungal activity during five days of evaluation under normal environmental conditions without refrigeration, presenting ≤ 52% of the disease due to F. oxysporum and A. solani.

Abstract
Modern production of vegetable oils has reached impressive levels, and the ever-growing quantities of waste cooking oil (WCO) provide a local source of raw materials for innovative materials. The WCO composite production process involves a series of reactions, including polymerisation, esterification, and transesterification, which lead to the hardening of composite materials. In light of the growing problem of bacterial and fungal diseases, materials with high strength properties and biocidal properties are being sought. Fungal infections of the skin are a widespread problem, and the number of cases is steadily increasing. This article presents a study of the antibacterial potential of WCO-based composites enriched with hops or sorrel root in the context of their application in the construction industry. The compressive and flexural strength of the oil composites, their absorbability and hydrophobicity, and their effects on Gram-positive (S. aureus and S. epidermidis) and Gram-negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa) bacteria and fungi (A. niger, P. anomala) were investigated. Maximum split tensile strength (4.3 MPa) and flexural strength (5.1 MPa) were recorded for oil-hop composites. Oil composites enriched with curly sorrel and hops showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus at 27% and 25%. High biocidal activity (up to 70%) was recorded against E. coli and against S. epidermidis (up to 99%) due to the action of composites with curly sorrel. The antifungal activities of composites with hops was 15% and 19% for P. anomala and A. niger, respectively, while with curly sorrel they were 42% and 30%.

Abstract
The presence of mycotoxins and other toxic metabolites in hops (Humulus lupulus L.) was assessed for the first time. In total, 62 hop samples were sampled in craft breweries, and analyzed by a multi-toxin LS-MS/MS method. The study collected samples from craft breweries in all of the Croatian counties and statistically compared the results. Based on previous reports on Alternaria spp. and Fusarium spp. contamination of hops, the study confirmed the contamination of hops with these toxins. Alternaria toxins, particularly tenuazonic acid, were found in all tested samples, while Fusarium toxins, including deoxynivalenol, were present in 98% of samples. However, no Aspergillus or Penicillium metabolites were detected, indicating proper storage conditions. In addition to the Alternaria and Fusarium toxins, abscisic acid, a drought stress indicator in hops, was also detected, as well as several unspecific metabolites. The findings suggest the need for monitoring, risk assessment, and potential regulation of Alternaria and Fusarium toxins in hops to ensure the safety of hop usage in the brewing and pharmaceutical industries. Also, four local wild varieties were tested, with similar results to the commercial varieties for toxin contamination, but the statistically significant regional differences in toxin occurrence highlight the importance and need for targeted monitoring.

Abstract
The economic impact of necrotizing enteritis (NE) resulting from Clostridium perfringens infection has been significant within the broiler industry. This study primarily investigated the antibacterial efficacy of hexahydrocolupulone against C. perfringens, and its pharmacokinetics within the ileal contents of broiler chickens. Additionally, a dosing regimen was developed based on the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model specific to broiler chickens. Results of the study indicated that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexahydrocolupulone against C. perfringens ranged from 2 mg/L to 16 mg/L in MH broth. However, in ileal content, the MIC ranged from 8 mg/L to 64 mg/L. The mutation prevention concentration (MPC) in the culture medium was found to be 128 mg/L. After oral administration of hexahydrocolupulone at a single dosage of 10-40 mg/kg bodyweight, the peak concentration (Cmax), maximum concentration time (Tmax), and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) in ileal content of broiler chickens were 291.42-3519.50 μg/g, 1-1.5 h, and 478.99-3121.41 μg h/g, respectively. By integrating the in vivo PK and ex vivo PD data, the AUC0-24h/MIC values required for achieving bacteriostatic, bactericidal, and bacterial eradication effects were determined to be 36.79, 52.67, and 62.71 h, respectively. A dosage regimen of 32.9 mg/kg at 24 h intervals for a duration of 3 days would yield therapeutic efficacy in broiler chickens against C. perfringens, provided that the MIC below 4 mg/L.

Abstract
Neuropathy affects 7-10% of the general population and is caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system. The limitations of current therapies highlight the necessity of a new innovative approach to treating neuropathic pain (NP) based on the close correlation between oxidative stress, inflammatory process, and antioxidant action. The advantageous outcomes of a novel combination composed of Hop extract, Propolis, Ginkgo Biloba, Vitamin B, and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) used as a treatment was evaluated in this study. To assess the absorption and biodistribution of the combination, its bioavailability was first examined in a 3D intestinal barrier model that replicated intestinal absorption. Further, a 3D nerve tissue model was developed to study the biological impacts of the combination during the essential pathways involved in NP. Our findings show that the combination could cross the intestinal barrier and reach the peripheral nervous system, where it modulates the oxidative stress, inflammation levels, and myelination mechanism (increased NRG, MPZ, ERB, and p75 levels) under Schwann cells damaging. This study proves the effectiveness of Ginkgo Biloba, Propolis, Hop extract, Vitamin B, and PEA in avoiding nerve damage and suggests a potential alternative nutraceutical treatment for NP and neuropathies.

Abstract
The larval stage of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l) is responsible for cystic echinococcosis (CE), a long-term infection affecting humans and animals worldwide, and constitutes a serious public health concern. If left untreated, CE can cause serious damage to multiple organs, especially the liver and lungs. Regarding the treatment, in the last few years, the use of pharmacological treatment has increased, suggesting that in the future, drug therapy may replace surgery for uncomplicated cysts. However, the only available anthelmintic drug to treat this infection is the albendazole, which has an efficacy that does not exceed 50%. On the basis of the above-mentioned evidence, new and improved alternative treatments are urgently needed. The use of natural products and their active fractions and components holds great promise as a valuable resource for the development of novel and effective therapies. Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) is a bittering agent in the brewing industry for which the sedative, digestive, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects have been reported. The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro efficacy of methanolic extracts from the leaves of hop varieties against E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s) protoscoleces. Varieties Mapuche and Victoria caused a stronger protoscolicidal effect compared to the Bullion, Cascade, and Traful varieties (P < 0.01), coinciding with their highest content of flavonoids, total polyphenols, and saponins. The viability of protoscoleces treated with the varieties Mapuche and Victoria decreased to approximately 50% at days 5 y 8, respectively, showing alterations such as soma contraction and impaired microtriches. After 18 days of treatment with both varieties, protoscoleces were completely altered both structurally and ultrastructurally. In conclusion, the methanolic extracts of the H. lupulus varieties Mapuche and Victoria demonstrated a marked in vitro effect against E. granulosus s.s. protoscoleces. The beer-making industry exclusively uses hop cones, leaving behind large amounts of hop leaves as an agricultural by-product that is not being utilized. On the basis of our study, we propose that hop leaves could also be used as a source of secondary metabolites with anthelmintic activity.

Abstract
The antiviral properties of the extracts of Vespa crabro nests collected from the Black Sea, Turkey have been investigated on Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf) cell cultures of Autographa californica multicapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV). The effect of nests on cell viability and cytotoxicity analysis and the antiviral assay was studied, and the cytopathic effects of the virus were detected. The nest's viral content was identified. The impact of nest extracts on the protein synthesis of the virus was investigated. Also interaction with pUC18 plasmid DNA was investigated, to analyse the protective effects of the Vespa crabro nest extract againist to hydroxyl radical-mediated DNA damage. 50 µg/ml concentration of ethanol, acetone, and petroleum ether extracts of the nests reduced the cytopathic effects of baculovirus on Sf cells. The extracts delayed infection above 25 µg/ml concentration. When the effects of nest extracts on virus titer were evaluated; the 50 µg/ml concentration of the acetone extract of the nest showed the highest effect (75%) reducing the virus titer. 25 µg/ml concentration of the ethanol extract of the nest showed the lowest effect (33.33%) with a reduction. The presence of polyhedrin protein was observed at 25 µg/ml concentrations of acetone and petroleum ether extracts. When the potential of the nest extracts to repair DNA damage, the nest extracts were found to have a concentration-dependent repair feature in different applications. As a result of bioactive component analysis, (Z) 9-Tricosane and (cis)-2-nonadecene (1.65%) were found to have the highest % areas. In other respects, 1H-Purine-6-amine, 2-dodecanol and hexadecanoic acid compaunds were Additionally, 1H-Purine-6-amine, 2-dodecanol and hexadecanoic acid compounds, which are associated with antiviral activity, also determined in the biocomponent analysis. Abstract
The medical plant research has received more attention among researchers especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. This research performed to evaluate the antifungal, anti-lung cancer (A549), and anti-hyperglycemic activities of aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata flower. Interestingly, A. paniculata flower aqueous extract contains pharmaceutically valuable phytochemicals such as alkaloid, phenolics, terpenoids, tannins, flavonoids, and protein. It also showed fine antifungal activity against test fungal pathogens in the following order as: Aspergillus niger > Fusarium solani > Trichoderma harzianum > A. parasiticus > P. expansum > Penicillium janthinellum with lowest MIC values as ranged from 100 to 300 μg mL-1. Interestingly, this aqueous extract also showed considerable anti-lung cancer activity, evidenced by dose and time dependent lung cancer cell line (A549) growth/proliferation inhibition/cytotoxicity activity (65%) at 300 μg mL-1 concentration. This can be achieved by plant extract through inducing the secretion of apoptosis related proteins such as TNF α, IFN-γ, and ınterleukin 2 leads to apoptosis in A549 cells. It also showed fine anti-diabetic activity by inhibiting α -amylase (58.41%) than α-glucosidase (54.74%) at 200 μg mL-1 concentration. The UV as well as FTIR results demonstrated that the aqueous extract of A. paniculata flower contains pharmaceutically valuable bioactive compounds, which may be responsible for the wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract
World beer production generates large volumes of waste discharged with every brew. Recently, new methods of reducing and reusing hops waste: hot trub (HT), and brewer-spent hops (BSH) are being exploited to improve the circular economy processes. This review outlines the current achievements in the management of hops waste. Following an in-depth review of various scientific publications, current strategies are discussed as a sustainable alternative to food waste exploitation and an inexpensive source of valuable compounds. Moreover, key aspects concerning the nutritional value of hops waste and the potential to enhance the functional properties of food and beverages are highlighted. Due to their nutritional composition, hops residues may be used as prospective sources of added-value co-products or additives for food enrichment, especially for products rich in fat, or as a new source of vegetable protein.

Abstract
Hop (Humulus lupulus) is a perennial herbaceous vine belonging to the family Cannabaceae. This crop is commercially grown for the brewing industry for its bitter and aromatic flavor, as well as its antiseptic properties. In June 2021, leaf spot and blight was observed on common hop plants in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. The typical symptoms were small to large, dark-brown, necrotic lesions with yellow halos on the leaves. This study aimed to clarify the causal agent of this disease. Two fungal species, Alternaria alternata and Bipolaris sorokiniana, were isolated from the diseased leaf samples and identified by combining morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis using sequence datasets of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), Alt a1, rpb2, endoPG, and OPA10-2; and ITS, gpd, and tef1, respectively. Pathogenicity of the fungal isolates on detached leaves and living plants revealed that B. sorokiniana is the causal pathogen of this disease, while A. alternata is potentially a saprophyte. Fungicide sensitivity of the pathogen B. sorokiniana was further estimated in vitro using three classes of fungicides represented by fluxapyroxad, pyraclostrobin, and hexaconazole. The effective concentrations that inhibited 50% of spore germination (EC50) were 0.72, 1.90, and 0.68 μg ml-1, respectively. Moreover, all of these fungicides were able to control B. sorokiniana on detached common hop leaves at their recommended concentrations. In conclusion, this study reports leaf spot and blight of common hop caused by B. sorokiniana for the first time and proposes potential fungicides for this disease.

Abstract
The antioxidant activity (AA) of hop extracts obtained from different hop genotypes (n = 14) was studied. For comparison, the purified β-acids-rich fraction and α-acids-with-β-acids-rich fraction were also used to test the antioxidative potential. The AA of purified hydroacetonic hop extracts was investigated using the Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP), Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC) and Intracellular Antioxidant (IA) methods. The FRAP values in different hop genotypes ranged between 63.5 and 101.6 μmol Trolox equivalent (TE)/g dry weight (DW), the ORAC values ranged between 1069 and 1910 μmol TE/g DW and IA potential values ranged between 52.7 and 118.0 mmol TE/g DW. Significant differences in AA between hop genotypes were observed with all three methods. AAs were determined using three different methods, which did not highly correlate with each other. We also did not find significant correlations between AA and different chemical components, which applies both to AA determined using individual methods as well as the total AA. Based on this fact, we assume that the synergistic or antagonistic effects between hop compounds have a more pronounced effect on AA than the presence and quantity of individual hop compounds.

Abstract
Dry-hopping is the addition of hops to the wort on the cold side of the brewing process. Unlike standard hop additions, its main purpose is not to produce a characteristic bitterness but to extract as much of the hop essential oils as possible, which are largely lost in the standard hopping process. When dry-hopped, it is possible to obtain a beer with an aroma that is difficult to achieve when hops are used on the hot side of the brewing process. As a result, this process has become very popular in recent years, particularly in beers that belong to the 'craft beer revolution' trend. In addition, the usefulness of this process is increasing with the development of new hop varieties with unique aromas. This article presents the main components of hops, focusing on those extracted during the process. Changes in the composition of beer bittering compounds and essential oils resulting from this process are discussed. This paper presents the current state of the knowledge on the factors affecting the degree of extraction, such as hop dosage, the time, and temperature of the process. Issues such as process-related physicochemical changes, hop creep, low flavor stability, haze formation, and green flavor are also discussed.

Abstract
Currently, the leaves of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.) are an unexploited and still little-investigated agricultural by-product. In our study, with the aim of exploring the metabolome of dried hop leaves (Chinook cultivar), a metabolomic approach was applied using multiple analytical tools such as SPME/GC-MS, GC-MS, PTR-ToF-MS, and NMR to identify the secondary metabolites. The obtained results showed the presence of a high number of components belonging to different chemical classes. In fact, thanks to the multi-methodological approach, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with low molecular weight, terpenic compounds, fatty acids, sugars, amino acids, organic acids, and alcohols have been detected and identified. Among the revealed terpenes in the untreated matrix, the sesquiterpenes α-humulene, β-caryophyllene, and α-copaene were the most abundant. Among the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, palmitic and linolenic acids, respectively, were those with the highest relative percentages. Particularly relevant was the sugar content, where sucrose was the main exponent while glutamate and asparagine were the principal detected amino acids. Conversely, alcohols and organic acids were the least abundant compound classes, and xanthohumol was also identified in the methanolic extract.

Abstract
This study examined the chemical composition and anti-coccal properties of essential oils and methanolic extracts of six different Humulus lupulus L. varieties from Poland: Iunga, Marynka, Sybilla, Magnum, Tradition and Chinook. The activity of an α-acid-enriched fraction of methanolic extracts was also studied. The chemical composition of essential oils and extracts was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) techniques. The compounds characteristic to H. lupulus extracts include xanthohumol, α-acids, β-acids, and prenylated flavonoids. Essential oil compositions showed a high prevalence of monoterpene hydrocarbon, myrcene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, α-humulene and β-caryophyllene. The antimicrobial activity was investigated against eight human cocci pathogenic strains: Staphylococcus aureus MRSA (ATCC 43300), S. aureus MRSA (29213), S. aureus MSSA (ATCC 29213), S. epidermidis (ATCC 12228), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), E. faecalis VRE (ATCC 51299), E. faecium (ATCC 19434) and Micrococcus luteus (ATCC 10240). The lowest minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were obtained for extracts and essential oils from Iunga hop samples. Extracts were significantly more active than essential oils. The most susceptible strain to both essential oils and extracts was M. luteus, whilst the least susceptible was E. faecium. The antimicrobial activity correlated with a high concentration of xanthohumol of active extracts rather than with the content of α-acids. Xanthohumol showed considerable activity against MRSA with an MIC value of 3.9 µg/mL. The activity of the α-acid-enriched fraction was mediocre compared to the results of all extracts.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting millions of people each year. Fortunately, the last decades have been marked by considerable advances in the field of cancer therapy. Researchers have discovered many natural substances, some of which are isolated from plants that have promising anti-tumor activity. Among these, essential oils (EOs) and their constituents have been widely studied and shown potent anticancer activities, both in vitro and in vivo. However, despite the promising results, the precise mechanisms of action of EOs and their bioactive compounds are still poorly understood. Further research is needed to better understand these mechanisms, as well as their effectiveness and safety in use. Furthermore, the use of EOs as anticancer drugs is complex, as it requires absolute pharmacodynamic specificity and selectivity, as well as an appropriate formulation for effective administration. In this study, we present a synthesis of recent work on the mechanisms of anticancer action of EOs and their bioactive compounds, examining the results of various in vitro and in vivo studies. We also review future research prospects in this exciting field, as well as potential implications for the development of new cancer drugs.

Abstract
Hop is widely used in beer brewing and as a medicinal product. The present study comprehensively analyzed the main molecular determinants of the antibacterial activity of hop extracts. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against Bacillus subtilis between 31.25 and 250 µg/mL were found in the ethanolic extracts of five hop varieties for beer brewing, but not in the tea hop sample. Activity-guided fractionation revealed the highest antibacterial activity for lupulone and adlupulone (MIC 0.98 µg/mL). Metabolome profiling and subsequent multistep statistical analysis detected 33 metabolites out of 1826 features to be associated with the antibacterial activity including humulone, adhumulone, colupulone, lupulone, and adlupulone. Xanthohumol, the three humulone- and three lupulone congeners were quantified in the hop extracts by a validated ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method. Considering concentrations and MICs, colupulone and lupulone were identified as major contributors to the antibacterial activity of hop extract with the highest antibacterial activity values (concentration/MIC) of 1.59 and 2.56.

Abstract
Hop cones are well-known for their antimicrobial properties, attributed to their specialized metabolites. Thus, this study aimed to determine the in vitro antifungal activity of different hop parts, including by-products such as leaves and stems, and some metabolites against Venturia inaequalis, the causal agent of apple scab. For each plant part, two types of extracts, a crude hydro-ethanolic extract and a dichloromethane sub-extract, were tested on spore germination of two strains with different sensitivities to triazole fungicides. Both extracts of cones, leaves and stems were able to inhibit the two strains, whereas rhizomes did not show activity. The apolar sub-extract of leaves appeared as the most active modality tested with half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 5 and 10.5 mg·L-1 on the sensitive strain and the strain with reduced sensitivity, respectively. Differences in activity level between strains were noticed for all active modalities tested. Sub-extracts of leaves were then separated into seven fractions by preparative HPLC and tested on V. inaequalis. One fraction, containing xanthohumol, was especially active on both strains. This prenylated chalcone was then purified by preparative HPLC and showed significant activity against both strains, with IC50 of 1.6 and 5.1 mg·L-1. Therefore, xanthohumol seems to be a promising compound to control V. inaequalis.

Abstract
Hop essential oil (EO) generates interest for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, in addition to the volatile compounds that are responsible for the hop aroma in beer. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, EO yield, and antibacterial activity of hop essential oil from hops of the Chinook variety against lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus casei) at different times of extraction. EO extraction was performed by hydrodistillation at different times. By analyzing the chemical composition by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined. The major compounds of hop EO were α-humulene, β-myrcene, and β-caryophyllene, and the extraction yields were 0.67, 0.78, and 0.85% mass of EO per mass of hops pelletized hops (m/m), for extractions of 90, 180, and 300 min, respectively. The EO obtained in 90 min was efficient against L. casei at 2.5 mg/mL (MIC) and 5.0 mg/mL (MBC), and the 300 min one against L. brevis at 2.5 mg/mL (MIC) and 25 mg/mL (MBC). The antibacterial activity was affected by the chemical makeup of the oil, revealing that the hop EO extracted in 300 min was the most efficient among the other extraction times.

Abstract
Hops extracts and their derivatives have many important biological activities, among them, excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties make them a promising food preservative. However, poor water solubility limits their application in the food industry. This work aimed to improve the solubility of Hexahydrocolupulone (HHCL) by preparing solid dispersion (SD) and investigating the application of the obtained products (HHCL-SD) in actual food systems. HHCL-SD was prepared by solvent evaporation with PVPK30 as a carrier. The solubility of HHCL was dramatically increased to 24.72 mg/mL(25 ℃)by preparing HHCL-SD, much higher than that of raw HHCL (0.002 mg/mL). The structure of HHCL-SD and the interaction between HHCL and PVPK30 were analyzed. HHCL-SD was confirmed to have excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, the addition of HHCL-SD proved to be beneficial for the sensory, nutritional quality, and microbiological safety of fresh apple juice, hence prolonging its shelf-life.

Abstract
The inflorescences of Humulus lupulus L. are the most valuable ingredient in the brewing industry. Only female cones are used as their bitterness and aroma, much associated with beer, are granted by the production of resins and essential oils, respectively. The traditional brewing process for the extraction of the organic volatiles in hops is called dry hopping. It consists of extended maceration at low temperature after the fermentation phase. New extraction technologies can improve extraction rates and product quality while saving time and money. This article proves that multiple-effect fractional condensation under a vacuum is suitable for flavouring applications and especially for performing dry hopping without contamination risks and reductions in hop amounts. This technique leads to the recovery of aqueous aromatic fractions that are very rich in hop sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes. These suspensions are extremely stable when stored at 5-8 °C and avoid degradation even after several months. This feature is crucial for the marketing of non-alcoholic beverages, where the dilution of essential oils is otherwise problematic.

Abstract
In this study, freeze-drying microencapsulation was proposed as a technology for the production of powdered hop extracts with high stability intended as additives/ingredients in innovative formulated food products. The effects of different carriers (maltodextrin, Arabic gum, and their mixture in 1:1 w/w ratio) on the physical and techno-functional properties, bitter acids content, yield and polyphenols encapsulation efficiency of the powders were assessed. Additionally, the powders' stability was evaluated for 35 days at different temperatures and compared with that of non-encapsulated extract. Coating materials influenced the moisture content, water activity, colour, flowability, microstructure, and water sorption behaviour of the microencapsulates, but not their solubility. Among the different carriers, maltodextrin showed the lowest polyphenol load yield and bitter acid content after processing but the highest encapsulation efficiency and protection of hop extracts' antioxidant compounds during storage. Irrespective of the encapsulating agent, microencapsulation did not hinder the loss of bitter acids during storage. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of freeze-drying encapsulation in the development of functional ingredients, offering new perspectives for hop applications in the food and non-food sectors.

Abstract
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arthropod-borne virus that belongs to the genus Alphavirus (family Togaviridae). CHIKV causes chikungunya fever, which is mostly characterized by fever, arthralgia and, sometimes, a maculopapular rash. The bioactive constituents of hops (Humulus lupulus, Cannabaceae), mainly acylphloroglucinols, known as well as α- and β-acids, exerted distinct activity against CHIKV, without showing cytotoxicity. For fast and efficient isolation and identification of such bioactive constituents, a silica-free countercurrent separation method was applied. The antiviral activity was determined by plaque reduction test and was visually confirmed by a cell-based immunofluorescence assay. All hops compounds demonstrated a promising post-treatment viral inhibition, except the fraction of acylphloroglucinols, in mixture. β-acids fraction of 125 µg/mL expressed the strongest virucidal activity (EC50 = 15.21 µg/mL), in a drug-addition experiment on Vero cells. Hypothesis for mechanism of action were proposed for acylphloroglucinols based on their lipophilicity and chemical structure. Therefore, inhibition of some steps of the protein kinase C (PKC) transduction cascades was also discussed.

Abstract
The antimicrobial activity of hop extracts obtained from different hop genotypes were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus. In this study the pure xanthohumol, purified β-acids rich fraction, as well as α-acids with β-acids rich fraction were used to test antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus; whereby, the antimicrobial activity of different hop extracts against Lactobacillus acidophilus was studied for the first time. Microbial susceptibility to purified hydroacetonic extracts from different hop varieties was investigated by the broth microdilution assay to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The hop hydroacetonic extracts were more effective against Staphylococcus aureus than against Lactobacillus acidophilus. Strong inverse correlations of MIC and MBC values were obtained with xanthohumol, cohumulone, n+adhumulone, colupulone and n+adlupulone contents, suggesting that the identified chemical hop compounds are directly responsible for antimicrobial effects. Moreover, the effect of the growth medium strength on the MIC values of hop extracts against Staphylococcus aureus was systematically investigated for the first time. The current study also reveals the effect of different hop extracts on Staphylococcus aureus, which responds to their presence by lag phase extension and generation time prolongation.

Abstract
The metabolic and mechanical stresses associated with muscle-fatiguing exercise result in perturbations to bodily tissues that lead to exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), a state of fatigue involving oxidative stress and inflammation that is accompanied by muscle weakness, pain and a reduced ability to perform subsequent training sessions or competitions. This review collates evidence from previous research on a wide range of nutritional compounds that have the potential to speed up post-exercise recovery. We show that of the numerous compounds investigated thus far, only two-tart cherry and omega-3 fatty acids-are supported by substantial research evidence. Further studies are required to clarify the potential effects of other compounds presented here, many of which have been used since ancient times to treat conditions associated with inflammation and disease.

Abstract
The present study investigated the potential antioxidant applications of Humulus lupulus L. as raw extract and nanoformulated in liposomes. H. lupulus is commonly used as a food ingredient, but it is also a promising source of specialized metabolites with health-promoting effects. In the extract obtained by hydroalcoholic maceration, 24 compounds were characterized using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. The extract exhibited an interesting antioxidant activity in in vitro spectrophotometric and cell assays. The extract was nanoformulated into liposomes to exploit and improve its beneficial proprieties. The in vitro assays revealed that, after incorporation into liposomes, the extract's antioxidant activity was preserved and even improved. Moreover, a lower dose of the extract was required to prevent reactive oxygen species overproduction when included in the nanoformulation. These results confirm the advantages of nanoformulating herbal extract to maximize its health-promoting effects for a potential pharmaceutical application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As climate change proceeds, the management of the population of mosquitoes becomes more and more challenging. Insect adulticides and larvicides constitute significant control techniques, with the latter being considered the leading mosquito control method. However, the development of mosquito resistance development and the adverse side effects caused by the extensive use of synthetic insecticides have turned research towards the discovery of environmentally-friendly solutions. Plants and bacteria have historically proven to be a good source of insecticidally active compounds, which may possess novel modes of action to overcome current resistance mechanisms and could also possess favorable human and environmental safety profiles. A previous study demonstrated that the naturally occurring prenylated acyl phloroglucinol deoxycohumulone is a potent larvicidal agent against Culex pipiens. Herein the structural characteristics that improve it are explored by evaluating colupulone and novel geranylated analogues. RESULTS Colupulone, a prenylated acyl phloroglucinol isolated from Humulus lupulus, colupone, and novel geranylated acyl phloroglucinol congeners, were synthesized and evaluated against Cx. pipiens larva. Results indicated that selected derivatives exhibited superior potency than deoxycohumulone (LC50 43.7 mg L-1 ). Thus, strong activity was observed for colupulone (LC50 19.7 mg L-1 ), and some novel geranyl analogues of deoxycohumulone reaching at LC50 17.1 mg L-1 , while colupone and similar compounds were almost inactive. CONCLUSION The results determined the relationship between the target activity and the chemical structure of the tested compounds, and they revealed significantly improved larvicidal candidates. These results highlight the potential of the acyl phloroglucinol chemistry for further development of mosquito larvicides. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bitter flavors and antioxidant activities are critical characteristics and indicators, respectively, of beer quality. To gain a better understanding of dry-hopped beer's bitterness, this work comprehensively evaluated the perceived bitterness intensity and bitterness attributes from aspects of beer aroma and non-volatile bitter compounds using sensory analysis under two conditions: (i) with and (ii) without nose clips. To quantify bitter and volatile compounds, the work conducted chromatographic analyses: high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Simultaneously, this work assessed the antioxidant activity of commercially dry-hopped beers. RESULTS First, dry-hopped beer in this study contained abundant non-volatile bitter compounds (hop bitter acids, polyphenols and flavonoids), and aroma was validated using HPLC, UPLC-MS and GC-MS methods. Moreover, the bitter-tasting perception test findings demonstrated that many dry-hopped beers had a higher bitterness intensity when evaluated without a nose clip, whereas this phenomenon was adverse in several ale beers. Additionally, the 'lingering' and 'harsh' characteristics were diminished when beer aroma was blocked out (with nose clip) for dry-hopped beer. Meanwhile, most dry-hopped beers had greater antioxidant activity than ale beers (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION This work revealed the bitterness complexity of dry-hopped beer; besides non-volatile bitter compounds, beer aroma had an impact on the perceived bitterness intensity and attributes, and dry-hopped beer had a relatively intense antioxidant capacity. This study facilitated the development of a detailed knowledge about the assessment of bitter-tasting perceptions in dry-hopped beers and provided a basis for the development of functional beer benefiting human health. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Aging is a natural biological process that manifests as the progressive loss of function in cells, tissues, and organs. Because mechanisms that are meant to promote cellular longevity tend to decrease in effectiveness with age, it is no surprise that aging presents as a major risk factor for many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and diabetes. Oxidative stress, an imbalance between the intracellular antioxidant and overproduction of reactive oxygen species, is known to promote the aging process. Autophagy, a major pathway for protein turnover, is considered as one of the hallmarks of aging. Given the progressive physiologic degeneration and increased risk for disease that accompanies aging, many studies have attempted to discover new compounds that may aid in the reversal of the aging process. Here, we summarize the antiaging mechanism of natural or naturally derived synthetic compounds involving oxidative stress and autophagy. These compounds include: 2-cyano-3,12-dioxoolean-1,9-dien-28-oic acid (CDDO) derivatives (synthetic triterpenoids derived from naturally occurring oleanolic acid), caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE, the active ingredient in honey bee propolis), xanthohumol (a prenylated flavonoid identified in the hops plant), guggulsterone (a plant steroid found in the resin of the guggul plant), resveratrol (a natural phenol abundantly found in grape), and sulforaphane (a sulfur-containing compound found in cruciferous vegetables).

Abstract
Scutellaria (Lamiaceae) comprises over 360 species. Based on its morphological structure of calyx, also known as Skullcap, it is herbaceous by habit and cosmopolitan by habitat. The species of Scutellaria are widely used in local communities as a natural remedy. The genus contributed over three hundred bioactive compounds mainly represented by flavonoids and phenols, chemical ingredients which serve as potential candidates for the therapy of various biological activities. Thus, the current review is an attempt to highlight the biological significance and its correlation to various isolated bioactive ingredients including flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, alkaloids, and steroids. However, flavonoids were the dominant group observed. The findings of the Scutellaria reveal that due to its affluent basis of numerous chemical ingredients it has a diverse range of pharmacological potentials, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifeedant, enzyme inhibition, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic significance. Currently, various bioactive ingredients have been investigated for various biological activities from the genus Scutellaria in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, these data help us to highlight its biomedical application and to isolate the responsible compounds to produce innovative medications as an alternative to synthetic drugs.

Abstract
When confronted with non-psychotic mental disorders, pregnant women often refrain from using synthetic drugs and resort to herbal medicines such as St. John’s wort, California poppy, valerian, lavender, and hops. Nevertheless, these herbal medicines have not yet been officially approved in pregnancy due to lack of safety data. Using a variety of in vitro methods (determination of cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, genotoxicity, effects on metabolic properties, and inhibition/induction of differentiation) in a commonly used placental cell line (BeWo b30), we were previously able to show that extracts from these plants are likely to be safe at the usual clinical doses. In the present work, we wanted to extend our safety assessment of these herbal medicines by 1) looking for possible effects on gene expression and 2) using the same in vitro methods to characterize effects of selected phytochemicals that might conceivably lead to safety issues. Proteomics results were promising, as none of the five extracts significantly affected protein expression by up- or down-regulation. Protopine (contained in California poppy), valerenic acid (in valerian), and linalool (in lavender) were inconspicuous in all experiments and showed no adverse effects. Hyperforin and hypericin (two constituents of St. John’s wort) and valtrate (typical for valerian) were the most obvious phytochemicals with respect to cytotoxic and apoptotic effects. A decrease in cell viability was evident with hypericin (≥1 µM) and valtrate (≥10 µM), whereas hyperforin (≥3 µM), hypericin (30 µM) and valtrate (≥10 µM) induced cell apoptosis. None of the tested phytochemicals resulted in genotoxic effects at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 µM and thus are not DNA damaging. No decrease in glucose consumption or lactate production was observed under the influence of the phytochemicals, except for valtrate (at all concentrations). No compound affected cell differentiation, except for hyperforin (≥1 µM), which had an inhibitory effect. This study suggests that extracts from St. John’s wort, California poppy, valerian, lavender, and hops are likely to be safe during pregnancy. High plasma concentrations of some relevant compounds—hyperforin and hypericin from St. John’s wort and valtrate from valerian—deserve special attention, however.

Abstract
This study evaluates the content of essential oils (EOs) and prenylated flavonoid Xanthohumol (XN) in extracts of Slovenian hops, cultivar Aurora, obtained by using fluids of different polarity. It is a continuation of our previous work, investigating the extraction of bitter acids from hops. Extraction was conducted semi-continuously, using sub- and supercritical fluids of different polarity, i.e., carbon dioxide (CO2) and propane as non-polar and dimethyl ether (DME) as the polar solvent. The experiments explored a temperature range between 20 °C and 80 °C and pressures ranging from 50 bar to 150 bar. The content of XN in extracts was analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography and experiments demonstrated the largest concentration of XN was obtained using DME. In order to analyse the EO components in extracts, connected with a distinct odour, the steam distillation of extracts was performed and GC analysis was employed. Hop oil derived from CO2 extracts at specific conditions, had the highest relative concentration of linalool, β-caryophyllene and α-humulene, and oil derived from propane extracts had the highest content of all other five selected components (myrcene, geraniol, farnesene, α-selinene and δ-cadinene). The relative content of the investigated EO components in DME extracts was similar to that in propane extracts.

Abstract
This work involves a comprehensive chemical composition analysis of leaf and cone samples of Lithuanian hop varieties. This study aimed to determine the chemometric properties of the leaves and cones of five Lithuanian hop varieties. Determined properties were the following: (a) xanthohumol content, (b) phenolic compounds, (c) flavonoids, (d) radical scavenging activity, and (e) the qualitative composition of volatile compounds. The total content of phenolic compounds in aqueous 75% methanolic extracts varied between 31.4-78.2 mg of rutin equivalents (RE)/g, and the concentration of flavonoids was between 11.0-23.3 mg RE/g. Radical scavenging activity varied between 34.4-87.2 mg RE/g. A QUENCHER analysis procedure showed 91.7-168.5 mg RE/g of the total phenolic compound content, 12.7-21.4 mg RE/g of flavonoids, and 48.4-121.0 mg RE/g of radical scavenging activity. 'Fredos taurieji' and 'Fredos derlingieji' varieties have shown maximum values of phenolic compounds and radical scavenging activity both in leaf and cone suspensions. These varieties accumulated a higher amount of xanthohumol in leaves. The concentration of xanthohumol in the samples varied between 0.0014-0.2136% of dry mass, with the highest concentration in the cones of 'Kauno gražieji'. We identified 19 volatile compounds in leaves, and in cones, we identified 32. In both of them, α-humulene and β caryophyllene dominated. 'Raudoniai' leaves were exceptional in their aroma due to dominating compound nagina ketone (Kovats index 1306). The QUENCHER procedure has shown a great potential for the unextractable residue of hop raw material. Further investigation and valorization of different hop biomass components, not only cones, are essential.

Abstract
Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are edible flowers commonly used to add flavour and aroma to beer, besides they have rich chemical diversity and medicinal potential. In this work, an ex vivo anti-inflammatory assay via the LPS-induced signalling pathway and metabolomics approaches were performed to evaluate the ability of hops to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) inflammatory mediator and analyze which metabolites produced by the nine different hop cultivars are potential anti-inflammatory markers. Columbus, Chinook and Hallertau Mittelfrüh hop cultivars yielded extracts with PGE2 release inhibition rates of 86.7, 92.5 and 73.5 %, respectively. According to the multivariate statistical analysis, the majority of the metabolites correlated with the activity were prenylated phloroglucinol and phenolic homologs. These results suggest promissory anti-inflammatory hop metabolites.

Abstract
We demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of Humulus lupulus (HL) extract on solar simulator-irradiated primary human keratinocytes (PHKs) by analyzing ERK and p38 MAPK phosphorylation and production of IL-6 and IL-8. The anti-inflammatory effect of topically applied HL was further tested in vivo on human skin. To this end, we developed an oil-in-water (O/W) and a water-in-oil (W/O) cream with a lipid content of 40%. The anti-inflammatory effect of 1% HL extract incorporated in these two vehicles was assessed in a randomized, prospective, placebo controlled, double-blind UVB erythema study with 40 healthy volunteers. Hydrocortisone acetate (HCA) in the corresponding vehicle served as positive control. Surprisingly, both HL and HCA were only effective in the O/W system but not in the W/O formulation. Release studies using vertical diffusion cells (Franz cells) revealed that HCA was released in much higher amounts from the O/W cream compared to the W/O formulation. In summary, we have shown that 1% HL extract exerts anti-inflammatory effects comparable to 1% HCA, but only when incorporated in our O/W cream. Our findings confirm the critical role of the vehicle in topical anti-inflammatory systems.

Abstract
Since the last few decades, the green synthesis of metal nanoparticles was one of the most thrust areas due to its widespread application. The study proposed using wasted and unusable Humulus lupulus (Hops) extract to synthesize silver nanoparticles for biomedical application. The environment around us gives us many scopes to use the waste from environmental sources and turn it into something valuable. The spent Hops extract was used to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNP@HOPs), and the synthesized product exhibited an excellent therapeutic effect in terms of anti-bacterial and anti-cancer agents. The synthesis was optimized considering different factors like time and the concentration of AgNO3. The silver nanoparticles were characterized in detail using different characterization techniques XRD, DLS, TEM, BET, XPS, Raman Spectroscopy, SEM, EDAX, AFM, which revealed the uniqueness of the silver nanoparticles. The average hydrodynamic size was found to be 92.42 ± 2.41 with a low polydispersity index. The presence of Ag-C and Ag-O bonds in the AgNP@HOPs indicated that it is composed of organo-silver and silver oxides. The nanoparticles were found to be spherical with an average size of 17.40 nm. The AgNPs were lethal to both E. coli and S. aureus with a MIC-50 of 201.881 μg/mL and 213.189 μg/mL, respectively. The AgNP@HOPs also exhibited an anti-cancer effect with an IC-50 of 147.175. The AgNP@HOPs exhibited less cytotoxicity and genotoxicity against normal cells and exhibited superior haemocompatibility (major criteria for drug selection). There are indeed various reports on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, but this study proposes a green method for producing non-genotoxic, non-hemolytic organometallic silver nanoparticles using waste material with considerable therapeutic index from the environmental source with potential application in the medical industry. This work could be taken forward for in-vivo studies and for pre clinical studies.

Abstract
Hops are abundant in natural bioactive compounds. In this work, nine prenylated bitter compounds from hop were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. As a result, four flavonoids and one phloroglucinol (lupulone, LP) outperformed acarbose in inhibiting α-glucosidase. Isoxanthohumol (IX) and LP with two types of structures were selected for inhibition mechanism studies by spectroscopic methods and molecular dynamics simulation (MD). Results showed that IX acted as noncompetitive inhibitor and bound to α-glucosidase in allosteric sites via hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic, van der Waals (vdW), and electrostatic force, whereas LP was uncompetitive inhibitor and bound to catalytic sites via hydrophobic and vdW interactions. Notably, the conformation around binding site of α-glucosidase formed stable α-helix and tightened after binding IX and LP, respectively, which helped to elucidate noncompetitive and uncompetitive inhibitory mechanisms. This work demonstrated that two types of prenylated bitter compounds are discrepant in their mechanisms of interaction with α-glucosidase.

Abstract
Hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.) has been used by humans for ages, presumably first as a herbal remedy, then in the manufacturing of different products, from which beer is the most largely consumed. Female hops cones have different useful chemical compounds, an important class being antioxidants, mainly polyphenols. This narrative review describes the main antioxidants in hops, their bioavailability and biological effects, and the results obtained by now in the primary and secondary prevention of several non-communicable diseases, such as the metabolic syndrome related diseases and oncology. This article presents in vitro and in vivo data in order to better understand what was accomplished in terms of knowledge and practice, and what needs to be clarified by additional studies, mainly regarding xantohumol and its derivates, as well as regarding the bitter acids of hops. The multiple protective effects found by different studies are hindered up to now by the low bioavailability of some of the main antioxidants in hops. However, there are new promising products with important health effects and perspectives of use as food supplements, in a market where consumers increasingly search for products originating directly from plants.

Abstract
The biopreservation of beer, using only antimicrobial agents of natural origin to ensure microbiological stability, is of great scientific and commercial interest. This review article highlights progress in the biological preservation of beer. It describes the antimicrobial properties of beer components and microbiological spoilage risks. It discusses novel biological methods for enhancing beer stability, using natural antimicrobials from microorganisms, plants, and animals to preserve beer, including legal restrictions. The future of beer preservation will involve the skilled knowledge-based exploitation of naturally occurring components in beer, supplementation with generally regarded as safe antimicrobial additives, and mild physical treatments.

Abstract
Abstract Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are one of the vital raw materials of brewing and their form of storage directly influences the final organoleptic sensations of beers. When hops are incorrectly stored, the degradation of important bitter compounds occurs fast. In the present work, it was used the ultraviolet/visible and near infrared regions, maximized by Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatographic (UPLC) analyses, to identify the best way to store hops, by varying the (i) storage temperature, (ii) contact with atmospheric air, and (iii) storage time. For that, three different varieties of commercial hops were stored for six months (Hersbrucker, Magnum and Zeus). The chemometric results obtained with the Ultraviolet/ Visible (UV-Vis) and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) data demonstrated the hop degradation kinetics under different storage conditions, while the chromatographic results provided the quantification of this degradation. Together, the results indicated that hops stored at low temperatures (≤ -10 °C) under a vacuum plastic bag presented the lower α - acids degradation rates over the months of the study.
