Asian carp: A threat to American lakes, a feast on Chinese tables

Chemical Composition and Elements Concentration of Fillet, Spine and Bones of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) in Relation to Nutrient Requirements for Minerals

The aim of the study was to compare the content of major components, selected elements and heavy metals in the fillet, spine and bones of a carp (Cyprinus carpio). Moreover, the extent to which a prepared portion of carp tissue (100 g of fillet and 10 g of carp spine or bones) met the requirements for analyzed elements in adults (women and men) and children was calculated. The proximate composition (total protein, total lipid, ash, moisture) and mineral content of the fish samples were determined. The nutrient composition presented fluctuations among the different tissues. Moisture was the main constituent in the fillet and in the spine with 77.8% and 56.0%, respectively, whereas in bones, the main ingredient was ash (36.2%). All carp tissues were good sources of protein, with 16.5%, 21.0% and 17.0% in spine, bones and fillet, respectively. The most abundant main elements were the potassium in the fillet (4005 mg kg-1) and calcium in the bones (116,463 mg kg-1). The most abundant trace elements were iron in fillet and zinc in bones and spine. Carp meat can be considered a safe foodstuff in terms of concentrations of Hg, Pb and Cd, as the levels of these contaminants were less than FAO and European Commission maximum guidelines.

Unlocking the secrets of crude myofibril-bound serine protease from grass carp: The role in degrading myofibrillar proteins

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) are used as raw material for conventional surimi products in Southern China. However, endogenous serine proteases deteriorated the texture of the surimi gel. To unlock the mechanism behind, the present study isolated the crude myofibril-bound serine protease (cMBSP) in grass carp and studied its effects on surimi gel. The cMBSP activity was the highest at 40 °C and pH 8.0, and it remained stable at 20-55 °C neutral pH. Additionally, it was susceptible to serine protease inhibitors and high concentrations of Na+. The maximum degradation of myosin heavy chain by cMBSP was observed at 50 °C. Protein unc-45 homolog B (a myosin chaperone) is one of the apparent degradation products according to mass spectrometry. The cMBSP caused lower water holding capacity and deteriorated texture in the surimi gel. This study expanded insights about the mechanism of surimi gel degradation by cMBSP, which provided theoretical basis for enhancing surimi quality.

Carp scales derived double cross-linking hydrogels achieve collagen peptides sustained-released for bone regeneration

Collagen peptide exhibits a great activity in osteogenic differentiation and wound healing. However, uncontrolled collagen peptide release in bone defects leads to unsatisfactory bone regeneration. In this work, we prepared collagen peptide loaded calcium alginate hydrogel (SA-CP/Ca) derived from Asia carp scales by mixing sodium alginate solution, collagen peptides, calcium carbonate, covalent cross-linking agents N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) in one pot. Physically and chemically double cross-linking realized higher crosslink density, smaller porosity and pore size, and higher energy storage modulus and loss modulus, achieving sustained release of collagen peptides. The release profile is fitted to Keppas-Sahlin model, to find SA-CP/Ca hydrogels are more inclined to release collagen peptides through expansion and degradation. The compatibility and osteogenic ability of SA-CP/Ca are demonstrated in vitro and in vivo.

Morphological, histological and phylogenetic identification of three species of Myxobolus (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) infecting different carp lineages in China

The global cultivation of common carp Cyprinus carpio is developed primarily for either food or recreational purposes and myxosporean infections causing significant economic losses are regularly troublesome for carp farmers. However, most myxosporean species are poorly characterized, making it difficult to correctly elaborate on their parasitism mode and determine pathogenicity. Here, based on an integrative approach, we supplemented fundamental information on three Myxobolus species infecting different carp lineages in China. Myxobolus elliptoides Wu et Chen, 1987; Nine new species of Myxosporida from freshwater fish of Wuhu lake, Hubei, China. Acta Hydrobiologica Sinica, 11, 161 formed yellowish pseudocysts in the anal fin of common carp and were observed with ellipsoidal myxospores and two polar capsules of distinct dimensions. The dermal tissue within the fin ray was regarded as the type site for growing plasmodia of M. elliptoides. Myxobolus basilamellaris Lom et Molnar, 1983; Myxobolus basilamellaris sp. n. (myxozoa, Myxosporea), a parasite of the gills of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). Folia Parasitologica, 30, 1 aggregated ellipsoidal myxospores at the base of the gill filaments of koi carp juvenile, causing significant tissue damage. Myxobolus artus Achmerov, 1960, enwrapped in diffuse pseudocysts, was observed throughout the trunk muscle of mirror carp. Its oblate myxospores were asymmetrical and contained two unequal-sized polar capsules. According to the localization of large plasmodia, inter- and intramuscular preferences were displayed by M. artus. For precise species identification, we provided the SSU rDNA sequences for each species of Myxobolus. Among them, M. elliptoides was molecularly characterized for the first time, showing the highest 94.21% identity to Thelohanellus sinensis (KY469292). Phylogenetically, the affinity of both M. artus and M. basilamellaris to their conspecific species derived from different carp lineages was highly supported. Moreover, the intermixed cluster of Myxobolus species, including M. elliptoides, with those of Thelohanellus species provided evidence for querying the monophyletic evolution history of these taxa. This work updates the appreciation of the concerned species and enhances our understanding of the parasite fauna of common carp.

Understanding and mitigating thiaminase activity in silver carp

A deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), an essential cofactor for enzymes involved in metabolic processes, can be caused by the enzyme thiaminase. Thiaminase in food stocks has been linked to morbidity and mortality due to thiamine depletion in many ecologically and economically important species. Thiaminase activity has been detected in certain bacteria, plants, and fish species, including carp. The invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) presents an enormous burden to ecosystems throughout the Mississippi River watershed. Its large biomass and nutritional content offer an attractive possibility as a food source for humans, wild animals, or pets. Additionally, harvesting this fish could alleviate some of the effects of this species on waterways. However, the presence of thiaminase would detract from its value for dietary consumption. Here we confirm the presence of thiaminase in several tissues from silver carp, most notably the viscera, and systematically examine the effects of microwaving, baking, dehydrating, and freeze-drying on thiaminase activity. Certain temperatures and durations of baking and microwaving reduced thiaminase activity to undetectable levels. However, caution should be taken when carp tissue is concentrated by processes without sufficient heat treatment, such as freeze-drying or dehydration, which results in concentration, but not inactivation of the enzyme. The effects of such treatments on the ease of extracting proteins, including thiaminase, and the impact on data interpretation using the 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) thiaminase assay were considered.

Indigenous Land-Based Approaches to Well-Being: The Niska (Goose) Harvesting Program in Subarctic Ontario, Canada

Historically, goose harvesting provided a source of culturally significant, safe, and nutritious food for the Omushkego Cree of subarctic Ontario, Canada. Disruptions stemming from colonization and climate change have led to a decrease in harvesting, resulting in higher rates of food insecurity. The aim of the Niska program was to reconnect Elders and youth to revitalize goose harvesting activities and associated Indigenous knowledge within the community. The program and evaluation were built using a two-eyed seeing (Etuaptmumk) and community-based participatory research approach. Salivary cortisol, a biomedical measure of stress, was collected before (n = 13) and after (n = 13) participation in the spring harvest. Likewise, cortisol samples were collected before (n = 12) and after (n = 12) the summer harvest. Photovoice and semi-directed interviews were employed after the spring (n = 13) and summer (n = 12) harvests to identify key elements of well-being from an Indigenous perspective. The changes observed in cortisol levels for the spring (p = 0.782) and summer (p = 0.395) harvests were not statistically significant. However, there was a noteworthy increase in the subjective well-being observed through the qualitative measures (semi-directed interviews and photovoice), highlighting the importance of using multiple perspectives when assessing well-being, especially in Indigenous peoples. Future programs should incorporate multiple perspectives when addressing complex environmental and health issues, such as food security and environmental conservation, especially in Indigenous homelands worldwide.

6His-tatritin promotes antimicrobial defense via regulating immune ability and intestinal microbial community in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

Antimicrobial peptides are small, cationic, and amphiphilic peptides found in most organisms, and many of these peptides have broad antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative, -positive bacteria and fungi. In the present study, a derivative of antimicrobial peptide Tatritin, 6His-Tatritin, was designed and expressed by Pichia pastoris using a constitutive vector pGAPZαA with the promoter of pGAP. The 6His-Tatritin had a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity based on the Oxford cup method and the micro broth dilution test. In addition, to explore the role of 6His-Tatritin in vivo, grass carps (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) were infected with Aeromonas hydrophila after they were fed with 6His-Tatritin as feed additives for 28 days. The results revealed that 6His-Tatritin could significantly up-regulate the expression levels of Hepcidin, Leap-2b, Nrf-2, CuZn-SOD and LZM (P < 0.05). In addition, 6His-Tatritin could significantly reduce the mortality (P < 0.05) and the intestinal injury of grass carps infected with bacteria. The 16S sequencing analysis showed that the structure of microbial community in intestine of fish was more diversified compared with control after treatment with 6His-Tatritin. In summary, the peptide of 6His-Tatritin could promote antimicrobial defense via regulating immune ability and intestinal microbial community in grass carp. This study provides an effective method and approach for the application of antimicrobial peptide Tatritin in aquaculture, and also provides insights into the function of antimicrobial peptides in immunity against pathogens in fish.

COVID-19's effect on the spatial integration of fish markets: Evidence from carp price in China

While curbing the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), lockdown policies and "stay-at-home" restrictions caused massive supply chain disruptions worldwide. This led to breaks in spatial market integration, which could further lead to market inefficiency and resource misallocation. Taking daily price data from 2016 to 2021, this study investigates COVID-19's effect on the spatial market integration of fish in China using cointegration tests. We find a high degree of spatial market integration for fish in China before the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, our results show that COVID-19's effect on the spatial market integration of fish varies spatially in China. Specifically, COVID-19 reduces the degree of spatial market integration in most provinces, especially those with high infection rates. Meanwhile, the degree of spatial market integration in provinces with low infection rates remains high. Therefore, the government should be regionally specific when formulating market recovery policies.

Bacterial communities in co-cultured fish intestines and rice field soil irrigated with aquaculture wastewater

In some regions, integrated rice-fish farms have been developed to balance the needs of aquaculture wastewater discharge and rice field irrigation. In this type of aqua-agriculture system, soil is irrigated with aquaculture wastewater, and intestinal bacteria in cultured fish species likely impact soil bacteria through irrigation. However, little is known about the relationship between soil bacteria and intestinal bacteria in some carp species commonly co-cultured in some Asian regions. Therefore, we co-cultured five carp species in aquaculture ponds and used the aquaculture wastewater to irrigate rice fields for over 5 years, and then compared carp intestinal bacterial communities with rice field soil bacterial communities. The results from analysis of similarity and SourceTracker analysis showed that a low similarity (R = 0.7908, P = 0.001) and contribution (an average of 9.9% of bacterial genera) of intestinal bacteria to soil bacterial communities although 77.5% of soil bacterial genera were shared by intestinal bacteria. Our results also indicated that intestinal bacteria in the numerically dominant fish species in the co-culture system do not necessarily impact soil bacteria more significantly than those of less abundant carp species, and that intestinal bacterial communities in one single fish species may impact certain soil bacterial phyla more significantly than others. Our results provide a better understanding of the impact of aquaculture wastewater on rice fields and will be helpful for the development of this type of aqua-agriculture system.

Mechanism of Inosine Monophosphate Degradation by Specific Spoilage Organism from Grass Carp in Fish Juice System

Microbial growth strongly affects the quality and flavor of fish and fish products. This study aimed to explore the role and function of grass carp-borne microorganisms in the degradation of inosine monophosphate (IMP) related compounds in a fish juice system during chill storage (4 °C. Prokaryotic transcriptomic analysis was used to explore the microbial contribution to metabolic pathways and related enzymes. The degree of microbial contribution was verified by the activity of enzymes and metabolite content. Collectively, there were multiple IMP relative product degradation pathways. A. rivipollensis degraded IMP by producing 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT) while S. putrefaciens degraded IMP mainly by alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Hypoxanthine (Hx) was degraded to uric acid (Ua) induced by P. putida and S. putrefaciens mainly with producing xanthine oxidase (XOD), while A. rivipollensis almost could not produce XOD. This work can used as a guide and provide basic knowledge for the quality and flavor control of aquatic products.

Indigenous Land-Based Approaches to Well-Being: The Amisk (Beaver) Harvesting Program in Subarctic Ontario, Canada

The act of decolonizing knowledge systems involves recovering and renewing traditional, non-commodified cultural patterns, such as the sustenance of intergenerational relationships and traditional practices. A decline in beaver harvesting, which was once an integral part of the Omushkego Cree culture, has resulted in an overabundance of beavers and dams, which has negatively affected communities by increasing the local flooding events and impacting the water quality. The aim of the Amisk (beaver) program was to reconnect the Elders and youth to revitalize traditional on-the-land activities and, in the present case, beaver harvesting and associated activities within the community. The program and evaluation were built using a two-eyed seeing (Etuaptmumk) and community-based participatory research approach. Salivary cortisol, a biomedical measure of stress, was collected before and after participation in the program. Photovoice, along with semi-directed interviews, were employed to identify the key elements of well-being from a First Nations’ perspective. For the beaver harvesting activities, the changes observed in the cortisol concentrations were not statistically significant (p = 0.094). However, the act of beaver dam removal was associated with a statistically significant increase in the post-participation cortisol concentration (p = 0.021). It was noteworthy that increased stress during the removal of the beaver dams–as indicated by the elevated post-activity cortisol levels–were not reflected in a decrease in the qualitative measures (semi-directed interviews and photovoice) of well-being from an Indigenous perspective. In fact, there was a noted increase in the subjective well-being of the participants, which highlights the importance of multiple perspectives when assessing well-being, especially in Indigenous peoples. However, the cortisol findings of the present pilot project need to be interpreted with caution, due to the limited sample sizes.

Asian Carp, an Alternative Material for Surimi Production: Progress and Future

Asian carp is a general designation for grass carp, silver carp, bighead carp, and black carp. These fish species belong to the family Cyprinidae. In 2018, more than 18.5 million tons of Asian carp were produced globally. Asian carp can be used for producing surimi, a stabilized myofibrillar protein concentrate that can be made into a wide variety of products such as imitation crab sticks, fish balls, fish cakes, fish tofu, and fish sausage. Surimi is usually made from marine fish, but Asian carp have been widely used for surimi production in China. The quality of surimi is affected by various factors, including the processing methods and food additives, such as polysaccharides, protein, salt, and cryoprotectant. With an impending shortage of marine fish due to overfishing and depletion of fish stocks, Asian carp have a potential to serve as an alternative raw material for surimi products thanks to their high abundancy, less emissions of greenhouse gases from farming, desirable flesh color, and sufficient gel forming ability. The utilization of Asian carp in surimi production could also contribute to relieving the overflow of Asian carp in the United States.

Planktonic bacteria in white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and channel catfish (Letalurus punetaus) aquaculture ponds in a salt-alkaline region

Aquaculture in salt-alkaline regions is encouraged in China, and culture of many aquatic species has been introduced into these areas. In this study, we cultured two species, white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and channel catfish (Letalurus punetaus) separately in aquaculture ponds in a salt-alkaline region in northwest China and assessed the impacts of the aquaculture operations on the planktonic bacterial community in the culture ponds. Culture of both species decreased the planktonic bacterial diversity and altered the bacterial community structure in the aquaculture ponds compared with the source water. Among the 10 dominant bacterial phyla, 8 were significantly correlated with environmental parameters; the exception was Actinobacteriota, the most dominant phylum, and Firmicutes. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota abundances showed significant positive correlations with alkalinity, whereas Patescibacteria, Cyanobacteria, Planctomycetota, and Verrucomicrobiota abundance were positively correlated with salinity. Linear regression analysis showed that alkalinity was positively correlated with bacterial beta diversity and salinity was negatively correlated with that. In addition, white shrimp aquaculture significantly lowered the alkalinity, which suggests that culture of this species in inland salt-alkaline regions is a potential dealkalization solution.
