Abstract
Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) - which include electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, or simply e-cigs, and marijuana vaping have become increasingly popular. ENDS devices have been established as one of the tobacco quit methods and promoted to be safer compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes. Emerging evidence demonstrates that e-cigarette and marijuana vape use can be harmful, with potential associations with cancer. Herein, we summarize the level of evidence to date for altered immune response, with a focus on cancer risks in the offspring after maternal use of, or aerosol exposures from, ENDS or marijuana vape during pregnancy. From 27 published articles retrieved from PubMed, we sought to find out identified carcinogens in ENDS aerosols and marijuana vapor, which cross the placental barrier and can increase cancer risk in the offspring. Carcinogens in vaping aerosols include aldehydes, metals, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, tobacco alkaloids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds. Additionally, there was only one passive vaping exposure case study on a human fetus, which noted that glycerol, aluminum, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, selenium, and lead crossed from the mother to the offspring's cord blood. The carcinogens (metals) in that study were at lower concentrations compared to the mother's biological matrices. Lastly, we observed that in utero exposures to ENDS-associated chemicals can occur in vital organs such as the lungs, kidneys, brain, bladder, and heart. Any resulting DNA damage increases the risk of tumorigenesis. Future epidemiological studies are needed to examine the effects of passive aerosol exposures from existing and emerging electronic nicotine and marijuana products on developing offspring to cancer.

Abstract
Tobacco pollutants are prevalent in the environment, leading to inadvertent exposure of pregnant females. Studies of these pollutants' toxic effects on embryonic development have not fully elucidated the potential underlying mechanisms. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the developmental toxicity induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) at concentrations of 0.25, 1, and 2.5% using a zebrafish embryo toxicity test and integrated transcriptomic analysis of microRNA (miRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA). The findings revealed that CSE caused developmental toxicity, including increased mortality and decreased incubation rate, in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, CSE induced malformations and apoptosis, specifically in the head and heart of zebrafish larvae. We used mRNA and miRNA sequencing analyses to compare changes in the expression of genes and miRNAs in zebrafish larvae. The bioinformatics analysis indicates that the mechanism underlying CSE-induced developmental toxicity was associated with compromised genetic material damage repair, deregulated apoptosis, and disturbed lipid metabolism. The enrichment analysis and RT-qPCR show that the ctsba gene plays a crucial function in embryo developmental apoptosis, and the fads2 gene mainly regulates lipid metabolic toxicity. The results of this study improve the understanding of CSE-induced developmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos and contribute insights into the formulation of novel preventive strategies against tobacco pollutants during early embryonic development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the influence of pre-pregnancy maternal BMI and increases in maternal weight during pregnancy on perinatal and child outcomes at birth and at 5 years. RESEARCH DESIGN/SETTING A prospective cohort study was conducted between November 2016 and December 2021. The participants were a total of 115 women-child dyads, selected from among pregnant women receiving routine prenatal care in different health centres belonging to 2 health districts. Follow-ups were conducted with the women during pregnancy and with their children during the 10 days after birth and at 5 years. FINDINGS The total weight gain during pregnancy is influenced by an inadequate pre-pregnancy BMI (0.03; 95 % CI, 0.004 - 0.25; P=.001) and a greater increase in maternal BMI during the first and second term of pregnancy. A greater increase in BMI during pregnancy was associated with higher breastfeeding rates both in the short term (1.21; 95 % CI, 1.01-1.44; P = 0.04) and the long term (12 months: 1.30; 95 % CI, 1.02 - 1.67; P = 0.04; 24 months: 1.30; 95 % CI, 1.02 - 1.69; P = 0.04). No links were found between gains in maternal weight and the weight of the newborn, nor between maternal weight and/or pre-pregnancy BMI with the nutritional status of the child. KEY CONCLUSIONS After studying these results, it was concluded that promoting and implementing health and education policies focused on enhancing maternal nutritional status is essential to improve the nutritional status of children. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Healthy gestational weight gain (GWG) is an important issue to be addressed by the midwife in primary care, both in the preconception period and throughout pregnancy. As a result, it is important that the midwife is trained and has the appropriate resources and tools to work with pregnant women individually and collectively. In addition to paying attention to overweight and obese pregnant women, the midwife should also pay attention to women with a normal BMI, as they seem to have greater difficulty in maintaining a healthy weight gain. Another line of intervention to be addressed is breastfeeding (BF), where the midwife should be the main point of reference from the beginning of this process, taking into account the relationship between BMI and BF.

Abstract
Background Suicidal and self-injurious-related behaviors (SSIRBs) are a serious public health challenge in China. However, a comprehensive systematic review of psychosocial interventions for SSIRBs among Chinese adolescents has not been performed. To fill this gap, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine psychosocial interventions for SSIRBs among Chinese adolescents. Methods Eight international (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, Clinical Trial, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science) and four Chinese (Wanfang, SinoMed, CEPS, and CNKI) databases were searched from inception to 31 January 2023. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently conducted by two groups of researchers. Qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis were both used. Results The initial search yielded 16,872 titles. Of the 649 full texts reviewed, 19 intervention articles focusing on SSIRBs met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen out of the 19 included studies involved cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Seven non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) studies assessing self-injurious behaviors were included (six short-term studies and three long-term studies). Compared with long-term interventions [-1.30 (95% CI: -1.84, -0.76)], short-term psychosocial interventions had a higher standardized mean difference (SMD) value [1.86 (95% CI: -2.72, -0.99)]. Meta-regression showed an inverse relationship between the treatment response and sample size (slope = 0.068, Z = 2.914, p = 0.004) and proportion of females (slope = 1.096, Z = 5.848, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses showed that compared with the "less than 1 month" group [-0.494 (-0.783, -0.205)], in the "immediate postintervention" group, the pooled estimate was significantly lower [-2.800 (-4.050, -1.550), p < 0.001]. Conclusion Our review systematically summarized the key characteristics and effectiveness of existing psychosocial interventions for SSIRBs among Chinese adolescents. Short-term psychosocial interventions for NSSI were significantly effective in reducing self-injurious behavior scores, especially in the immediate postintervention period. More favorable treatment responses could be observed in both male and small samples.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) mediates the association between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and adverse neonatal outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) for singleton pregnancies. METHODS This cohort study collected 79437 maternal data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) between 2020 and 2021. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were applied to estimate the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and PIH in women receiving ART as well as the associations between pre-pregnancy BMI and PIH and adverse neonatal outcomes. The mediation effect of PIH on the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes was estimated according to the total effect, natural direct effect, natural indirect effect, and percentage of mediation. RESULTS There were 25769 participants had adverse neonatal outcomes at the end of the follow-up. After adjusting for confounding factors, an increased risk of PIH in women receiving ART was identified in those with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 [odds ratio (OR)=1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.84-2.01]. Pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 was associated with an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes (OR = 1.26, 95%CI:1.22-1.30). Women with PIH had an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes (OR = 1.79, 95%CI:1.71-1.87). The percentage mediated by PIH in the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes was 21.30%. CONCLUSION PIH partially mediated the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes in women receiving ART, which recommends that women control weight before receiving ART.

Abstract
Tobacco use during and around pregnancy can significantly increase the risk of stillbirth, congenital disabilities, premature birth, and low-weight birth. To establish maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks for primary care and dental providers and to facilitate cross-national learning, this scoping review aims: 1) to analyze the body of literature on maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, and strategies at the international and national level; 2) to identify common core elements; and 3) to identify gaps in the literature, and propose future initiatives and policy development directions. A systematic database search based on the JBI methodology and corresponding PRISMA-ScR guidelines will be conducted from January 2015 to August 2023. Searches in different databases will be combined with an expert survey among the members of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) - Oral Health, Tobacco Control, and the Women, Adolescent, and Children's Working Groups to evaluate the search outcomes and add maternal tobacco prevention and cessation frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, or strategies. Using a systematic review tool to support the screening, two independent reviewers will screen the titles and abstracts of all articles, in order to include the relevant ones for full-text screening, and an independent third author will resolve conflicts, if there is any discrepancy between the two independent reviewers' search. After a full-text review, data extraction will be conducted for analysis. Descriptive analyses include the publication year, country, legal quality, and target group addressed. A narrative synthesis will describe the scope and content of the frameworks, guidelines, recommendations, and strategies. The scoping review will serve as a stepping-stone to creating a WFPHA policy resolution on tobacco prevention and cessation framework for women of childbearing age led by the WFPHA Oral Health, Tobacco Control and the Women, Adolescent, and Children's Working Group members. This WFPHA policy resolution 'Maternal Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Recommendations for Primary Care Providers and Dental Providers' will be forwarded to the WFPHA General Council and the General Assembly for approval and will be disseminated to the WFPHA public health association members. Ultimately, this recommendation will be used by each national public health association to consider integrating it into their maternal health strategy.

Abstract
The rate of substance use is rising, especially among reproductive-age individuals. Emerging evidence suggests that paternal pre-conception and maternal prenatal substance use may alter offspring epigenetic regulation (changes to gene expression without modifying DNA) and outcomes later in life, including neurodevelopment and mental health. However, relatively little is known due to the complexities and limitations of existing studies, making causal interpretations challenging. This review examines the contributions and influence of parental substance use on the gametes and potential transmissibility to the offspring's epigenome as possible areas to target public health warnings and healthcare provider counseling of individuals or couples in the pre-conception and prenatal periods to ultimately mitigate short- and long-term offspring morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that maternal smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding may affect the occurrence of hypertension, but whether early life factors modify the impact of the offspring's genetic risk on hypertension is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among maternal smoking and breastfeeding with adult-onset hypertension and the modified impact of offspring genetic susceptibility. METHODS This study included 437,185 participants from the UK Biobank who were initially free of hypertension and provided a prospective cohort of individuals aged 40 to 69 years. The association of maternal smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding with hypertension was examined by using the Cox regression model. Then, a polygenic risk score (PRS) for hypertension was used to test the gene-environmental interaction on hypertension. RESULTS During a median follow-up period of 8.7 years, a total of 68,148 cases of hypertension were identified in this study. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of hypertension for maternal smoking and breastfeeding were 1.11 (1.09, 1.13) and 0.96 (0.94, 0.98), respectively. However, no evidence of an interaction between maternal smoking and breastfeeding was observed. Across all levels of genetic risk, including high genetic risk, maternal smoking and nonbreastfeeding had higher hypertension hazards than nonmaternal smoking and breastfeeding, respectively. The adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of hypertension were 1.80 (1.73, 1.87) in those who had high genetic predisposition plus maternal smoking and 1.67 (1.60-1.74) in those with nonbreastfeeding and high genetic risk. There were significant additive interactions between maternal smoking or breastfeeding and genetic factors on the incidence of hypertension. CONCLUSIONS Maternal smoking and nonbreastfeeding were associated with a higher risk of hypertension in adulthood and may attenuate the risk of hypertension related to genetic factors. These results suggested that adherence to nonmaternal smoking and breastfeeding was associated with a lower risk of hypertension among participants with all gradients of genetic risk.

Abstract
Allergic diseases affect millions of children and adolescents worldwide. In this Review, we focus on allergies to food and airborne allergens and provide examples of prevalence trends during a time when climate change is of increasing concern. Profound environmental changes have affected natural systems in terms of biodiversity loss, air pollution, and climate. We discuss the potential links between these changes and allergic diseases in children, and the clinical implications. Several exposures of relevance for allergic disease also correlate with epigenetic changes such as DNA methylation. We propose that epigenetics could be a promising tool by which exposures and hazards related to a changing environment can be captured. Epigenetics might also provide promising biomarkers and help to elucidate the mechanisms related to allergic disease initiation and progress.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that greater self-efficacy (SE) to modify smoking behaviors during treatment improves long-term post-treatment outcomes. Little is known about factors that might enhance SE for smoking abstinence and for reducing children's tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). The present study investigated hypothesized predictors of end-of-treatment SE to abstain from smoking and to protect children from TSE by conducting secondary multiple regression analyses of data (N = 327) from the Kids Safe and Smokefree (KiSS) behavioral intervention trial. KiSS aimed to reduce parental smoking and child TSE in urban, low-income, and minority communities. The results showed that partner support and initiating a planned quit attempt during treatment were positively related to SE to abstain from smoking and to reduce children's TSE (all p's < 0.001) at the end of treatment (EOT). Further, lower baseline nicotine dependence and the use of nicotine replacement were related to higher SE to abstain from smoking at EOT (p < 0.01), whereas more restrictive residential smoking rules and lower children's TSE at baseline was associated with higher SE to reduce children's TSE at EOT (all p's < 0.05). These findings inform theory and future intervention design, identifying individual and social-environmental factors that might enhance smoking-behavior-change SE.
