Abstract
BACKGROUND IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine modulating inflammation and metabolic pathways. Its proinflammatory effect plays a significant role in organ failure pathogenesis, commonly elevated in systemic inflammatory conditions. Extracorporeal blood purification devices, such as the Advanced Organ Support (ADVOS) multi hemodialysis system, might offer potential in mitigating IL-6's detrimental effects, yet its efficacy remains unreported. METHODS We conducted a proof-of-concept in vitro study to assess the ADVOS multi system's efficacy in eliminating IL-6. Varying concentrations of IL-6 were introduced into a swine blood model and treated with ADVOS multi for up to 12 h, employing different blood and concentrate flow rates. IL-6 reduction rate, clearance, and dynamics in blood and dialysate were analyzed. RESULTS IL-6 clearance rates of 0.70 L/h and 0.42 L/h were observed in 4 and 12-h experiments, respectively. No significant differences were noted across different initial concentrations. Reduction rates ranged between 40 and 46% within the first 4 h, increasing up to 72% over 12 h, with minimal impact from flow rate variations. Our findings suggest that an IL-6-albumin interaction and convective filtration are implicated in in vitro IL-6 elimination with ADVOS multi. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates for the first time an efficient and continuous in vitro removal of IL-6 by ADVOS multi at low blood flow rates. Initial concentration-dependent removal transitions to more consistent elimination over time. Further clinical investigations are imperative for comprehensive data acquisition.

Abstract
PURPOSE It was of great significance to identify someone with a high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence and make a diagnosis as early as possible. Therefore, we aimed to develop and validate a new, objective, and accurate prediction model, and convert it into a nomogram to make a personalized prediction of cancer occurrence in cirrhotic patients with different etiologies. METHODS The present study included 938 patients with cirrhosis from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2012. Patients were prospectively followed-up until January 1, 2018. We used a competing risk model and the Fine-Gray test to develop and validate the prediction model and to plot a nomogram based on the model established. RESULTS At the end of follow-up, 202 (21.5%) patients developed HCC, with a 5-year incidence of 19.0% (corrected for competing risk model). Based on the competing risk regression method, we built a prediction model including age, gender, etiology, lymphocyte, and A/G ratio. Three groups with different risks were generated on account of tertiles of the 5-year risk predicted by the model. The cumulative 1-, 3-, and 5-year incidences of HCC were 2.0%, 20.8%, and 42.3% in high-risk group, 0.9%, 10.1%, and 17.7% in medium-risk group, and 0%, 2.0%, 8.5% in low-risk group (P < 0.001). The model showed excellent discrimination and calibration in predicting the risk of HCC occurrence in patients with all-cause cirrhosis. CONCLUSION The model could make an individual prediction of cancer occurrence and stratify patients based on predicted risk, regardless of the causes of cirrhosis.

Abstract
Objective Various studies have investigated the predictive significance of numerous peripheral blood biomarkers in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, their predictive values have not been validated. This study assessed and evaluated the ability of common nutritional or inflammatory indicators to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with SCLC who received first-line chemotherapy. Methods Between January 2008 and July 2019, 560 patients with SCLC were enrolled at the Sichuan University West China Hospital. Eleven nutritional or inflammatory indices obtained before chemotherapy were evaluated. The cutoff values of continuous peripheral blood indices were confirmed through maximally selected rank statistics. The relationship of peripheral blood indices with OS was investigated through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Harrell's concordance (C-index) and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve were used to evaluate the performance of these indices. Results A total of 560 patients with SCLC were enrolled in the study. All the patients received first-line chemotherapy. In the univariate Cox analysis, all indices, except the Naples score, were related to OS. In the multivariate analysis, albumin-globulin ratio was an independent factor linked with prognosis. All indices exhibited poor performance in OS prediction, with the area under the curve ranging from 0.500 to 0.700. The lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were comparatively superior predictors with C-index of 0.568 and 0.550, respectively. The LDH showed incremental predictive values, whereas the PNI showed diminishing values as survival time prolonged, especially for men or smokers. The LDH with highest sensitivity (0.646) and advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) with highest specificity (0.952) were conducive to identifying death and survival at different time points. Conclusion Common inflammatory or nutritional biomarkers are only marginally useful in predicting outcomes in patients with SCLC receiving first-line chemotherapy. Among them, LDH, PNI, and ALI are relatively promising biomarkers for prognosis evaluation.

Abstract
Background It has been proven that the ratio of albumin to globulin (A/G) is a typical biomarker for monitoring inflammation and nutritional status. But the potential role of A/G in stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remained unknown. Patients and methods Following inclusion criteria, 5,173 AIS patients were included and segmented into SAP (n = 897) and non-SAP (n = 4,276) groups. The differences in variables between groups were compared. The logistic regression model was used to determine the association between A/G and SAP, and a forest plot was drawn. Results Compared with the non-SAP group, the SAP group had a lower A/G level (P < 0.001). Then, A/G was divided into quartiles. In comparison to Q3 (A/G = 1.25–1.39), logistic regression revealed that patients with a lower A/G (A/G ≤ 1.09) had a higher risk of SAP (OR = 1.96, 95% CI, 1.56–2.46, P < 0.001). On the contrary, those with a higher A/G (A/G ≥ 1.4) had a lower SAP risk (OR = 0.73, 95% CI, 0.54–0.97, P = 0.029). Conclusion The study revealed that a low A/G level was associated with an increased SAP risk. Appropriate preventative measures for SAP should be taken in AIS patients with a low A/G level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between the dynamic alterations of nutritional indexes before and after surgery, and the prognosis of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after radical surgery are unclear. Methods: This study enrolled 100 NSCLC patients in stages I-III who received radical surgery. The preoperative and postoperative 6-month levels of nine nutrition-related indicators were assessed in patients. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves as well as Cox regression models. RESULTS Patients had better disease-free survival (DFS) with baseline total protein (TP) >76.66 g/L (75% vs. 50%, P = .027), baseline albumin (ALB) >37.7 g/L (60% vs. 26.7%, P = .002), baseline albumin to globulin ratio (AGR) >1.31 (63.5% vs. 40.5%, P = .006), or baseline globulin (GLOB) <31.42 g/L (39.4% vs. 62.7%, P = .037). Moreover, patients with increased hematocrit (HCT) (69.8% vs. 43.9% P = .013) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (73.2% vs. 42.4%, P = .014) at the postoperative 6-month examination had superior DFS. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses demonstrated that age >65 years, adenocarcinoma (pathological type), higher baseline TP, and post-surgery elevated HCT independently predicted favorable DFS. CONCLUSION Lower baseline TP and decreased postoperative HCT levels are independent predictors of prognosis in NSCLC following radical surgical procedures.

Abstract
Background Past studies have identified fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR) as a novel prognostic immune biomarker in various diseases. Here, we investigated the prognostic value of FAR in all combined cancer mortality. Methods We extracted patient data from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care Database III. FAR was measured prior to hospital admission. Only first admission data from each patient were used. Baseline data were extracted within 24 h after admission. The clinical endpoints were 90- and 365-day all-cause cancer mortality. Cox proportional hazards models and subgroup analyses were used to determine the relationship between FAR and these clinical endpoints. Results A total of 652 eligible patients were enrolled. Upon adjusting for age and gender, multivariate analysis revealed correlation between higher FAR values and increased risk of all-cause mortality. After adjusting for more confounding factors, higher FAR values significantly correlated with 90- and 365-day all-cause mortality relative to low FAR values (tertile 3 vs tertile 1: HR, 95% CI: 1.65, 1.15-2.39; 1.52, 1.10-2.10). Conclusion Our findings indicate that FAR may predict the risk of cancer mortality and is an independent prognostic indicator of all-cause mortality in cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Accurate identification of ideal candidates for cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) is an unmet need. We tested the association between preoperative value of systemic albumin to globulin ratio (AGR) and overall survival (OS) as well as cancer-specific survival (CSS) in mRCC patients treated with CN. Methods mRCC patients treated with CN were included. The overall population was therefore divided into two AGR groups using cut-off of 1.43 (low, <1.43 vs. high, ≥1.43). Univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses tested the association between AGR and OS as well as CSS. The discrimination of the model was evaluated with the Harrel’s concordance index (C-index). The clinical value of the AGR was evaluated with decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Among 613 mRCC patients, 159 (26%) patients had an AGR <1.43. Median follow-up was 31 (IQR: 16–58) months. On univariable analysis, low preoperative serum AGR was significantly associated with both OS (HR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.26–1.89, P<0.001) and CSS (HR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.27–1.90, P<0.001). On multivariable analysis, AGR <1.43 was associated with worse OS (HR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.23–1.85, P<0.001) and CSS (HR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.24–1.86, P<0.001). The addition of AGR only minimally improved the discrimination of a base model that included established clinicopathologic features (C-index=0.640 vs. C-index=0.629). On DCA, the inclusion of AGR marginally improved the net benefit of the prognostic model. Low AGR remained independently associated with OS and CSS in the IMDC intermediate risk group (HR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.16–1.99, P=0.002). Conclusions In our study, low AGR before CN was associated with worse OS and CSS, particularly in intermediate risk patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent five years, reports regarding albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and the survival of gastric cancer (GC) have emerged rapidly, yet their association remains controversial. This meta-analysis was aimed to provide an insight into the prognostic significance of pretreatment AGR in GC. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, WanFang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and VIP databases were searched for relevant studies, from inception to September 30, 2020. Individual hazard ratios (HRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined by Stata 12.0 software to evaluate the association between pretreatment AGR and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival/progression-free survival (DFS/PFS). RESULTS A total of 8,305 patients with GC from 12 studies were included for further analysis. Pooled analyses indicated that low AGR was closely associated with worse OS (HR = 1.531, 95% CI: 1.300-1.803, P < 0.001) and worse DFS/PFS (HR = 2.008, 95% CI: 1.162-3.470, P = 0.012) in GC patients. Moreover, subgroup analyses demonstrated that the association between low AGR and worse OS remained constant despite variations in country, tumor stage, cut-off value, cut-off selection and treatment method. CONCLUSION AGR could act as an efficient prognostic indicator for GC, and that low pretreatment AGR predicts poor prognosis in GC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the prognostic value of systemic inflammatory biomarkers (albumin/globulin ratio [AGR], neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio [NLR], and platelet/lymphocyte ratio [PLR]) in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and further develop a novel prognostic score (AGR-NLR). METHODS A large-scale prospective study enrolling 792 eligible patients from December 2002 to June 2018 was carried out at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. Three multivariate Cox regression models were performed to assess the association of overall survival (OS) with systemic inflammatory biomarkers, quantified by Akaike information criterion (AIC). Then, a novel AGR-NLR score was established and incorporated into a prognostic nomogram. RESULTS In the univariate analysis, the increased AGR was associated with a reduced risk of death. Conversely, the higher NLR and PLR, the worse the OS. In the multivariate Cox regression models, AGR and NLR were stably independent prognostic indicators in all models, with Model 2 showing a lowest AIC (AGR: HR = 0.56, 95%CI: 0.41-0.78; NLR: HR = 1.80, 95%CI: 1.07-3.04). Then, a novel AGR-NLR score was established, which showed a more excellent performance than either AGR or NLR alone (area under curve [AUC]: 0.589, 0.559, and 0.556, respectively). The C-index of the nomogram based on AGR-NLR was superior to that of traditional TNM staging system (C-index: 0.658 versus. 0.596, p < .001). Similar results were also showed by decision curve analysis, indicating the nomogram had more positive net benefit compared to TNM staging system. CONCLUSION The novel AGR-NLR score is strongly associated with outcome in patients with OSCC and could be serve as a useful tool to accurately predict the OS of OSCC patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Liver failure is characterized by compromised hepatic detoxification, protein synthesis, and metabolic derangements leading to an accumulation of a broad spectrum of water-soluble and lipophilic toxins as well as immune system mediators. Exploring complex detoxification mechanisms to therapeutically target those components, this article will focus on similarities, differences, and potential synergies in the mechanism of albumin dialysis and hemoperfusion. METHODS An in vitro two-compartment model for the comparison of liver support techniques was used to compare MARS albumin dialysis modified with novel charcoal adsorbents to CytoSorb hemoperfusion with added hemodialysis for effects on marker molecule removal. RESULTS MARS and CytoSorb performed similar in the removal of water-soluble toxins. Ammonia removal was increased using CytoSorb. CytoSorb lead to a statistically significant reduction of albumin-bound toxins, total bilirubin and subfractions. Bile acid removal was comparable. MARS demonstrated no removal of cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), whereas CytoSorb allowed for near complete removal. Notably, CytoSorb displayed 50% of lipophilic substance and cytokine removal during the first hour of treatment. CONCLUSION Compared to MARS, CytoSorb hemoperfusion leads to an initially fast removal of cytokines, TNF-α and IL-6, as well as reduction of albumin-bound toxins such as indirect bilirubin and bile acids in our model. The initial removal is also associated with removal of albumin.

Abstract
The aim of this document was to inform the scientific community of sparse preliminary results regarding advanced supportive therapies and technology-driven systems in addition to highlighting the benefits and possibilities of performing concise research during challenging times. Advanced organ support for lung and heart offers the possibility to buy the time needed for recovery. However, remaining a bridging strategy, extracorporeal life support cannot act as the ultimate treatment for the underlying COVID-19 disease. Appropriate patient selection criteria addressed by experts and scientific organizations, such as Extracorporeal Life Support Organization and World Health Organization, may provide significant help in the difficult decision-making and to reduce mortality in patients with profound respiratory and/or cardiac failure due to COVID-19. Severe, systemic cytokine-mediated inflammation associated with the SARS-CoV-2 has also been described. Effects of crosstalk between coagulation and inflammatory pathways appear to significantly affect disease progression and lead to poor outcomes. Multiple therapeutic strategies, including antibody therapies (such as Tocilizumab, Sarilumab, Siltuximab), therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), and blood purification techniques for direct removal of cytokines, including filtration, dialysis (diffusion), and adsorption are available. Further, we believe, that research should be facilitated and promoted, particularly under the guidance of recognized scientific societies or expert-based multicenter investigation, with rapid communication of critical and relevant information to enhance better appraisal of patient profiles, complications, and treatment modalities.

Abstract
The fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR), reflecting the systemic coagulation, nutritional and inflammation status of patients, has matured into a prognostic marker for several tumor types. However, only a few studies have assessed the utility of the FAR as a prognostic indicator in patients with advanced gastric cancer (GC) receiving first-line chemotherapy. In the present study, 273 patients with advanced GC who received first-line chemotherapy between January 2014 and January 2019 at the Cancer Hospital of China Medical University (Shenyang, China) were retrospectively analyzed. Using the cut-off values determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the patients were divided into low-FAR (≤10.03) and high-FAR (>10.03), low-fibrinogen (<3.8 g/l) and high-fibrinogen (≥3.8 g/l), and low-albumin (<40.55 g/l) and high-albumin (≥40.55 g/l) groups. The associations of the pretreatment FAR and clinicopathological characteristics with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. In order to estimate the prognostic value of the FAR for patients with poor prognosis or normal fibrinogen and albumin levels, subgroup analyses were performed. The FAR had a higher area under the ROC curve (0.690; 95% CI: 0.628–0.752; P<0.001) compared with either fibrinogen or albumin alone, which are common indicators of coagulation, nutritional and inflammatory indices. A high FAR was significantly associated with a more advanced stage, peritoneal metastasis, increased CA72-4 levels and anemia (all P<0.05). On survival analysis, a low FAR was associated with a longer PFS and OS compared with a high FAR (202 vs. 130 days and 376 vs. 270 days, respectively; both P<0.001), while the hazard ratio (HR) and P-values of the FAR were lower compared with those of fibrinogen and albumin alone on multivariate analysis (PFS: HR=0.638, 95% CI: 0.436–0.932, P=0.020; OS: HR=0.568, 95% CI: 0.394–0.819, P=0.002). Subgroup analysis indicated that among patients with poor prognosis, including multiple metastases, TNM stage IV and abnormal CA72-4 levels, the FAR may be used as an accurate prognostic marker (all P<0.05), and may also reliably identify patients with poor prognosis among those with normal fibrinogen and albumin levels (all P<0.001). The FAR was indicated to be a valuable marker for predicting PFS and OS in patients with advanced GC receiving first-line chemotherapy and is superior to either fibrinogen or albumin alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The serum albumin, albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) have been recommended to represent the nutritional and inflammatory status. Thus, they may be potential prognostic biomarkers for cancer. However, contradictory results were reported in different studies on glioma. The goal of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to re-evaluate their prognostic potential for glioma. METHODS Databases of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched to enroll all the studies investigating the prognostic significance of albumin, AGR, and PNI for glioma. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using STATA 13.0 software to indicate the intensity of association. RESULTS Eleven studies with 2928 cases were included. Overall meta-analysis showed that the prognostic values of albumin, AGR, and PNI were limited for glioma (P > .05). However, subgroup analysis demonstrated a high preoperative serum albumin was significantly related with excellent OS of patients with GBM (HR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.91-0.99, P = .018), while high PNI (HR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.43-0.73, P < .001) and AGR (HR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.34-0.96, P = .034) may be a protective factor of favorable OS for patients with high-grade gliomas. Furthermore, integration of all studies with multivariate analysis and clear cut-off also proved reduced preoperative serum albumin, AGR, and PNI were predictors of poor prognosis for patients with gliomas. CONCLUSION Preoperative serum albumin, AGR, and PNI may represent promising biomarkers to predict the prognosis in patients with glioma, especially for high-grade.

Abstract
Objective The preoperative value of albumin level and albumin/globulin ratio (AGR) has been discovered to be a possibility for predicting gastric cancer. However, their predictive accuracy remains unknown. This study’s objective is to evaluate the predictive value of albumin, globulin and AGR in gastric cancer. Methods A total of 3266 gastric cancer patients in our institution who underwent radical gastrectomy during the period from September 2008 to April 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Levels of preoperative serum albumin and globulin were recorded. The optimal cut off points of albumin, globulin and AGR were calculated using X-tile software. The association of albumin and AGR with clinicopathological features and eventual prognosis was analyzed. The survival predictive accuracy and prognostic discriminatory ability among different variables were analyzed. Results This study consisted of 2531 males (77.5%) and 735 females (22.5%). Ages ranged from 20 to 90, with a median age of 58.0 years. The optimal cut off values of albumin, globulin and AGR were set at 42.0, 28.2 and 1.80, respectively. Patients in the high albumin group and high AGR group were both associated with younger age, smaller tumor size, as well as earlier T and N stages. Univariate and multivariate analysis demonstrated that albumin level and AGR value were both significant prognostic factors, while globulin level was not. Furthermore, albumin level displayed a prognostic discriminatory ability and a predictive accuracy superior to that of AGR. The multivariate model based on albumin also revealed a superior predictive accuracy than that based on AGR. Conclusion Preoperative albumin level is superior to AGR value in the prediction of prognosis of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Purpose Preoperative nutrition-inflammation-based indicators have been reported to predict the prognosis of malignancies. We evaluated the prognostic significance of a combined score of the albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) for overall survival (OS) outcomes in patients with Siewert type 3 adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (S3-AEG). Patients and methods The prognostic significance of variables associated with 215 S3-AEG patients’ OS were assessed through univariate and multivariate analyses. The cutoff value of the preoperative AGR and PNI were calculated by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Patients with either an elevated AGR (≥1.72, cutoff value) or PNI (≥45.55, cutoff value) were given a score of 1; otherwise, they were given a score of 0. The AGR-PNI score ranged from 0 to 2. Results OS was independently associated with the N stage (HR: 0.336, 95% CI: 0.141–0.805, P=0.014) and AGR-PNI score (HR: 0.623, 95% CI: 0.487–0.797, P<0.001). Patients with AGR-PNI scores of 0, 1 and 2 had significant differences in OS (P=0.001). The prognostic role of AGR-PNI was significant in patients with stage I + II (P=0.043) and stage III S3-AEGs (P=0.003). ROC analysis indicated that the predictive ability of the AGR-PNI score was better than that of the other parameters. Conclusion The preoperative AGR-PNI score was a significant prognosticator of postoperative survival in patients with S3-AEG and could identify high-risk populations for reasonable therapy and effective follow-up.

Abstract
Background: Cervical carcinoma is the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) are indicators of systemic inflammation response correlated with tumor outcomes. Methods: This study recruited 110 patients with cervical cancer. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to pretreatment median values of CRP, ALB, GLB, LDH, and AGR. The post/preradiotherapy or post/pretreatment ratios were defined as rates of pretreatment CRP, ALB, GLB, LDH, and AGR values and the corresponding ones obtained after radiotherapy or whole treatment. Results: Higher pretreatment CRP or LDH levels were correlated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Increased post/preradiotherapy CRP ratio was correlated with worse PFS and OS, increased post/preradiotherapy LDH ratio was correlated with worse PFS. Increased post/pretreatment CRP ratio was correlated with worse PFS and OS, not-increased post/pretreatment AGR ratio was correlated with worse OS. Cox regression analysis model indicated that, moderately or poorly of differentiation, higher pretreatment CRP or LDH levels were independently associated with worse PFS, higher pretreatment CRP or LDH levels and increased post/pretreatment CRP ratio were independently associated with worse OS. Conclusion: CRP, LDH, or AGR are correlated with outcomes of resectable cervical cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated the clinical implications of the albumin to globulin ratio (AGR) in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (R-CHOP). METHODS Data of 232 patients with DLBCL treated with first-line R-CHOP from 2004 to 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients with AGR values ≥1.22 and <1.22 were assigned to the high and low AGR groups, respectively. Treatment response, treatment-related toxicity, and survival were compared according to the AGR. RESULTS The complete response rate was significantly lower in the low AGR group than in the high AGR group (59.1% vs. 81.3%; p < 0.001). Treatment-related mortality was also more frequent in the low AGR group than in the high AGR group (14.0% vs. 4.3%; p = 0.009). The low AGR group (median overall survival [OS] = 26.87 months; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 4.19-49.55) showed a significant decrease in OS compared to the high AGR group (median OS = 148.83 months; 95% CI = 76.26-221.41; p < 0.001). Progression-free survival (PFS) also decreased significantly in the low AGR group (median PFS = 14.29 months; 95% CI = 2.58-26.01) compared to the high AGR group (median PFS = 148.83 months; 95% CI = 76.21-221.45; p < 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, low AGR was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS and PFS. CONCLUSIONS Pretreatment AGR was useful for predicting treatment response, treatment-related toxicity, and prognosis in patients with DLBCL treated with R-CHOP. Further large prospective studies will be necessary to validate our findings.

Abstract
Background. The pretreatment albumin and globulin ratio (AGR) was an inflammation-associated factor which was related to the overall survival in various malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of AGR in patients with gastric cancer. Method. This retrospective study included 862 cases pathologically diagnosed with gastric cancer. All patients were randomly divided into the testing group (431 cases) and validation group (431 cases). The relationships of AGR with clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression methods. Results. In the testing group, the median overall survival was 26.90 months and the cutoff value of AGR was 1.50 based on R language. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that lower AGR was correlated with poorer overall survival. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that AGR was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (HR: 0.584, 95% CI = 0.351–0.973, and p = 0.039). In the validation group, the median overall survival was 24.10 months. Lower AGR (≤1.50) also had a significantly poorer overall survival by Kaplan-Meier analysis. According to multivariate analysis, the AGR was also confirmed to be an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (HR: 0.578, 95% CI = 0.373–0.897, and p = 0.015). Conclusions. Our study suggested that the pretreatment AGR could be a prognostic biomarker for overall survival in patients with gastric cancer.

As the official journal of The International Federation for Artificial Organs, The International Faculty for Artificial Organs, the International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support, the International Society for Pediatric Mechanical Cardiopulmonary Support, and the Vienna International Workshop on Functional Electrical Stimulation, Artificial Organs continues in the original mission of its founders "to foster communications in the field of artificial organs on an international level." Artificial Organs continues to publish developments and clinical applications of artificial organ technologies in this broad and expanding field of organ Replacement, Recovery, and Regeneration from all over the world. We were pleased to publish our second Virtual Issue in April 2016 on "Tissue Engineering in Bone" by Professor Tsuyoshi Takato. Our first was published in 2011 titled "Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping" by Dr. Ashraf Khir. Other peer-reviewed Special Issues this year included contributions from the 11th International Conference on Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Perfusion edited by Dr. Akif Ündar and selections from the 23rd Congress of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps edited by Dr. Bojan Biocina.
