Abstract
BACKGROUND Early life in-utero can have long-term influence on the mental health status of individuals in adulthood, such as depression. Age, gender, socio-economic status, education, and geography are demographic factors shown to be particularly vulnerable towards the development of depressive symptoms. In addition, climate risks on depression include sunlight, rain, and temperature. However, whether climate factors in early life have a long-term influence on depression related to demographic vulnerability remains unknown. Here, the present study explored the association between birth seasonality and adulthood depressive symptoms. METHODS We employed data from the project of Chinese Labour-forces Dynamic Survey (CLDS) 2016, containing the epidemiological data of depressive symptoms with a probability proportional to size cluster and random cluster sampling method in 29 provinces of China. A final sample size of 16,185 participants was included. Birth seasonality included spring (March, April, and May), summer (June, July, and August), autumn (September, October, and November), and winter (December, January, and February). RESULTS We found that born in Autumn peaked lowest rate of having depressive symptoms (16.8%) and born in Summer (vs. Autumn) had a significant higher ratio (OR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.02, 1.29) when controlling for demographic variables. In addition, demographic odds ratio of having depressive symptoms differed between people born in different seasons, particular for age and geography. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that birth seasonality influences the sensitive link of depressive symptoms with age and geography. It implicates early life climate environment may play a role in the development of adulthood depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Introduction Real-time evaluations of the severity of depressive symptoms are of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). In clinical practice, the evaluation approaches are mainly based on psychological scales and doctor-patient interviews, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Also, the accuracy of results mainly depends on the subjective judgment of the clinician. With the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, more and more machine learning methods are used to diagnose depression by appearance characteristics. Most of the previous research focused on the study of single-modal data; however, in recent years, many studies have shown that multi-modal data has better prediction performance than single-modal data. This study aimed to develop a measurement of depression severity from expression and action features and to assess its validity among the patients with MDD. Methods We proposed a multi-modal deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to evaluate the severity of depressive symptoms in real-time, which was based on the detection of patients' facial expression and body movement from videos captured by ordinary cameras. We established behavioral depression degree (BDD) metrics, which combines expression entropy and action entropy to measure the depression severity of MDD patients. Results We found that the information extracted from different modes, when integrated in appropriate proportions, can significantly improve the accuracy of the evaluation, which has not been reported in previous studies. This method presented an over 74% Pearson similarity between BDD and self-rating depression scale (SDS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and Hamilton depression scale (HAMD). In addition, we tracked and evaluated the changes of BDD in patients at different stages of a course of treatment and the results obtained were in agreement with the evaluation from the scales. Discussion The BDD can effectively measure the current state of patients' depression and its changing trend according to the patient's expression and action features. Our model may provide an automatic auxiliary tool for the diagnosis and treatment of MDD.

Abstract
Sunlight has been reported to have various beneficial effects on human health. Although research indicates an association between sunlight exposure and depressive symptoms, no study has examined it among the older adult population, especially among elderly Chinese women. This cross-sectional study addresses the aforesaid gap by investigating this association in 1,429 Chinese women aged 60 years and older. Information on their sunlight exposure was collected through a self-reported questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). The logistic regression models revealed that greater exposure to sunlight is associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms. In the final adjusted model, when the short sunlight exposure category (reference) was compared with the medium and long ones, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the prevalence of depressive symptoms (SDS cutoff ≥ 45) were 0.84 (0.60, 1.19) and 0.62 (0.43, 0.91), respectively (p-value for trend = 0.01). This significant association did not change when the SDS cutoff points were altered to ≥ 40 and ≥ 50. Findings indicate that an increased sunlight exposure duration is associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms in elderly women.

Independent and Joint Impacts of Acid-Producing Diets and Depression on Physical Health among Breast Cancer Survivors. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13072422. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the independent and joint associations of acid-producing diets and depressive symptoms with physical health among breast cancer survivors. We studied a cohort of 2944 early stage breast cancer survivors who provided dietary, physical health, demographic, and lifestyle information at baseline, year 1, and year 4. We assessed the intakes of acid-producing diets via two commonly used dietary acid load scores: potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP). Physical health was measured using the Rand 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), consisting of physical functioning, role limitation due to physical function, bodily pain, general health, and overall physical health subscales. Increased dietary acid load and depression were each independently and significantly associated with reduced physical health subscales and overall physical health. Further, dietary acid load and depression were jointly associated with worse physical health. For instance, depressed women with dietary acid load higher than median reported 2.75 times the risk (odds ratio = 2.75; 95% confidence interval: 2.18–3.47) of reduced physical function and 3.10 times the risk of poor physical health (odds ratio = 3.10; 95% confidence interval: 2.53–3.80) compared to non-depressed women with dietary acid load lower than median. Our results highlight the need of controlling acid-producing diets and the access of mental care for breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessment has interest as an indicator of degree of affectation and prognosis in mental disorders. HRQoL is impaired in both Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), two conditions highly prevalent, although less studied when both are coexisting (SUD + MDD). Hence, we decided to explore HRQoL with the SF-36 survey in a sample of 123 SUD and 114 SUD + MDD patients (51 symptomatic and 63 asymptomatic of depressive symptoms) under treatment. We performed analyses to examine HRQoL among groups, and its predictive value at 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-ups through regression models. Patients with SUD + MDD had worse HRQoL than SUD patients and population norms. For Mental Health, Vitality, and General Health dimensions, lower scores were observed for SUD + MDD regardless the presence/absence of depressive symptoms. For Physical Functioning and Health Change, depressive symptomatology and not the comorbidity of SUD + MDD diagnoses explained HRQoL limitations. At 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-ups we observed two predictors of relapses, General Health for asymptomatic SUD + MDD, and Physical Functioning for SUD. Improving HRQoL in SUD + MDD may be targeted during patient's treatment; future studies should explore the influence of HRQoL on patient's prognosis taking into account the presence/absence of depressive symptomatology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the independent relationship between depressive symptoms and arterial stiffness in the general Chinese population, and to explore possible interactive factors in the relationship. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Consecutive participants who received routine health physical examination in an affiliated hospital of a comprehensive university in Hunan Province, China, between September 2013 and March 2014 were examined. After exclusion of subjects not meeting the criteria, a total of 1334 subjects aged 22-77 years were recruited for final analysis. MEASURES The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was employed to assess the degree of depressive symptoms: 0-4 no depressive symptoms, 5-9 mild depressive symptoms and 10-27 moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was measured to determine arterial stiffness. RESULTS There was a slight increase in baPWV across elevated degrees of depressive symptoms (p=0.025). Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that mild depressive symptoms and moderate to severe depressive symptoms were independently associated with baPWV compared with no depressive symptoms after adjusting for baseline confounders (beta-coefficient: 40.3, 95% CI 6.6 to 74.1; beta-coefficient: 87.7, 95% CI 24.0 to 151.5, respectively). Further stratified analyses indicated that the relationship between degree of depressive symptoms and baPWV was predominant in subjects who had normal or normal-high blood pressure, or combined with hypertension (p for interaction=0.016), or in subjects with diabetes mellitus (p for interaction=0.004), examined in multivariate linear regressions. In addition, after adjustment, a significant association between moderate to severe depressive symptoms and baPWV was also found in female subjects younger than 60 years, although the interactive effect was not significant (p for interaction=0.056). CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms are independently associated with arterial stiffness, especially in subjects whose blood pressures are beyond the optimal range and combined with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a global public health concern. In particular, treatment-resistant depression (TRD) represents a key unmet need in the management of MDD. A systematic review of the epidemiological and economic literature on the burden associated with an increasing number of treatment steps due to TRD/non-response within an MDD episode was performed to quantify the burden of TRD. METHODS Studies were identified in the PubMed/Medline databases through April 27th, 2017. Articles were limited to full-length peer-reviewed journal publications with no date restrictions. Economic and patient health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data on non-response by the number of treatment steps were quantified and, where appropriate, compared across studies; otherwise, comparative data within studies were reported. RESULTS The 12 studies on economic burden found an association between increasing levels of TRD/non-response and elevations in direct and indirect costs. Likewise, the 19 studies studying HRQoL burden found that increasing levels of TRD/non-response correlated with reduced patient HRQoL and health status. LIMITATIONS TRD is defined inconsistently, which results in notable heterogeneity between published studies and poses methodological challenges for between-study comparisons. It is unknown if the increased economic and patient HRQoL burden are due to factors associated with TRD/non-response in addition to those due to depression persistence or severity. CONCLUSIONS A consistent trend was observed such that medical costs increased and patient HRQoL and health status decreased by increasing level of TRD/non-response within an MDD episode. These findings highlight the need for improved therapies for TRD to help reduce disease burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient-perceived health-related quality of life has become an important outcome in health care as an indicator of treatment effectiveness and recovery for patients with substance use disorder. As no study has assessed health-related quality of life among male patients with substance use disorder and co-existing severe mental illness, we compared health-related quality of life among patients with substance use disorder and the following severe mental illness diagnosis in Barcelona, Spain: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and examined the associations with clinically related variables. Additionally, we compared results for health-related quality of life in patients with substance use disorder and severe mental illness, with Spanish population norms. METHODS We assessed 107 substance use disorder male patients using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey comparing results across three groups with: comorbid schizophrenia (n = 37), comorbid bipolar disorder (n = 34), and comorbid major depressive disorder (n = 36). Multiple analyses of variance were performed to explore health-related quality of life by the type of co-existing SMI and linear regression analyses examined clinical correlates for the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey dimensions for each group. RESULTS There were differences in Physical Functioning, Vitality and the Physical Composite Scale among groups. Poorer Physical Functioning was observed for patients with comorbid schizophrenia (80.13±3.27) and major depressive disorder (81.97±3.11) compared with comorbid bipolar disorder patients (94.26±1.93). Patients with substance use disorder and schizophrenia presented lower scores in Vitality (41.6±2.80) than those with co-existing bipolar disorder (55.68±3.66) and major depressive disorder (53.63±2.92). Finally, results in the Physical Composite Scale showed lower scores for patients with comorbid schizophrenia (51.06±1.41) and major depressive disorder (51.99±1.87) than for those with bipolar disorder (60.40±2.17). Moreover, all groups had poorer health-related quality of life, especially Social Functioning, Role-Emotional and Mental Health, compared with population norms. Different clinical variables (e.g. medical disease comorbidity, severity of addiction, psychiatric symptomatology, suicide attempts, drug relapses) were related to different health-related quality of life dimensions depending on the co-existing severe mental illness. CONCLUSIONS Among male patients with substance use disorder, co-existing severe mental illness may influence some health-related quality of life dimensions and clinically related variables. Such differences may require tailored therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measurements for inpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) before and after 6-week fluoxetine treatment, and to elucidate the factors related to the HRQOL changes. METHODS A total of 131 inpatients with MDD were enrolled to receive 20 mg of fluoxetine for 6 weeks. Symptom severity and adverse events were assessed at weeks 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) and UKU Side Effect Rating Scale, respectively. HRQOL was measured using the Short Form 36 (SF-36), including 8 subscales, physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS), at baseline and week 6. Spearman's coefficient, Cohen's d, and multiple linear regression model were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS One hundred and six patients completing all measures at weeks 0 and 6 entered the analysis. HAMD-17 negatively correlated with SF-36 at baseline and week 6. The HAMD-17 had a larger effect size than SF-36. MCS, rather than PCS, showed statistically significant improvement. After using multiple linear regression analysis, age at onset, HAMD-17 score change, and number of adverse events reported during the trial period were related to MCS change after adjusting for confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS Fluoxetine treatment was associated with an improvement in depressive symptomology and HRQOL. Depressive symptoms had a greater extent of change than HRQOL. Clinicians must consider the negative effects of adverse events caused by antidepressants on the improvement of HRQOL. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence and burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) among adults in urban China. METHODS Data were included from the 2012 China National Health and Wellness Survey. Respondents self-reporting physician diagnosis of depression and screening positive for MDD (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), plus those screening positive for MDD, but undiagnosed and not experiencing depression, were compared with non-depressed controls. Outcomes included health-related quality of life (HRQoL), productivity loss, and resource utilization. Multivariable models assessed outcomes as a function of MDD, controlling for covariates. RESULTS MDD prevalence was 6.0%; only 8.3% of these respondents were diagnosed, among whom 51.5% currently used prescription medication for depression. Adults with MDD (diagnosed or undiagnosed) reported significantly poorer HRQoL and greater productivity loss and resource utilization than controls. CONCLUSIONS MDD in urban China may be under-diagnosed and undertreated. Awareness and better access to treatments may help alleviate the burden of MDD.
