Tick paralysis in dogs and cats in Australia: treatment and prevention deliverables from 100 years of research

The weather determined how 'hot' the tick paralysis season was in eastern Australia: 2018-2024

The eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, is a tick of much veterinary importance in Australia. Each year, thousands of dogs and cats present to veterinary clinics and hospitals with signs of tick paralysis. In a previous paper, we constructed two models to explain prevalence and temporal distributions of tick paralysis cases presenting to emergency veterinary hospitals in South East Queensland (2009-2020) and the Northern Beaches of Sydney (1999-2017). The first model accounted for the intensity of the clinical burden of tick paralysis based on the prevalence of cases of tick paralysis in the tick paralysis season whereas the second model accounted for the start of the tick paralysis season. In the present paper, we test our models further, with much additional data from 2021 to 2023 (South East Queensland) and from 2018 to 2023 (Northern Beaches of Sydney). During the defined tick paralysis season in these locations, 10.3 % (3207 of 31,217) of veterinary-consultations were for tick paralysis. On average, predictions for the prevalence of cases of tick paralysis were 1.3 % (0.013) away from the actual prevalence whereas predictions for the start of the tick paralysis season were 1.7 weeks away from the actual start of the season. The prediction of the prevalence of tick paralysis cases was most accurate for Brisbane and least accurate for the Northern Beaches of Sydney whereas, curiously, the prediction for the start of the tick paralysis season was most accurate for the Northern Beaches of Sydney and least accurate for Brisbane. We re-fitted the models with the new data. We predict that about 10 % (Sunshine Coast), 5 % (Brisbane), 7 % (Gold Coast) and 12 % (Northern Beaches of Sydney) of veterinary-consultations in the tick paralysis season of 2024 will be cases of tick paralysis, resulting in a tick paralysis clinical burden intensity of similar magnitude to previous years. Such predictions allow for timely public education campaigns around the importance of prevention and appropriate resource planning for veterinary clinics.

Apparent tick paralysis by Otobius megnini in a cat

In this study, we report a rare case of tick paralysis in a cat induced by Otobius megnini infestation. An 11-month-old female cat was admitted to a private veterinary clinic in Luling Texas, USA presenting with depression, tachycardia, and flaccid paralysis of the entire body. The four recovered ticks were morphologically and molecularly identified as O. megnini nymphs. Following initial tick removal and treatment with 0.1% milbemycin oxime in the ear canal on the first day of hospitalization, and additional tick removal and topical selamectin treatment on the second day of hospitalization the animal gradually improved. The recovery of the cat after tick removal supports the diagnosis of tick toxicosis. While tick antiserum is not available in North America, prevention of tick infestation and tick-induced paralysis can be effectively accomplished using repellent collars and the compliant use of other ectoparasiticide products year-round.

The weather determines the number of cases of tick paralysis in dogs and cats in eastern Australia, caused by Ixodes holocyclus, the eastern paralysis tick

We studied over 222,000 cases of emergency veterinary consultations in four regions along the eastern coast of Australia. We found that cases of tick paralysis (TP) caused by the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, accounted for 7.5% of these cases: >16,000 cases. The season of TP and the number (prevalence) of TP cases varied among regions and over the years. Our study of the association between weather and (i) the start of the season of TP, and (ii) the number of TP cases revealed much about the intricate relationship between the weather and I. holocyclus. We studied the effect of the hypothetical availability of isoxazoline-containing tick-preventative medicines and found that an increase in the availability of these medicines had significantly contributed to the decrease in TP cases. We found that the weather in winter accounted for the time of the year the season of TP starts whereas the weather in summer accounted for the number of TP cases in the TP season. Last, through a study of the effects of shifts in the climate under four hypothetical scenarios (warmer/cooler and drier/wetter than average), we propose that the start of the season of TP depends on how soon the weather in winter becomes suitable for the activity (e.g. host-seeking) and the development of I. holocyclus nymphs, and that the number of TP cases during the TP season depends on how many engorged female ticks and their eggs survive during summer.

Year-round efficacy of a single treatment of fluralaner injectable suspension (Bravecto Quantum™) against repeated infestations with Rhipicephalus sanguineus (sensu lato) and Ctenocephalides felis in dogs

BACKGROUND

Poor owner compliance with monthly control measures means that dogs in Australia can remain susceptible to infestations with fleas, present throughout the whole year, and brown dog ticks, which thrive in tropical and subtropical areas. A 150 mg/ml injectable fluralaner suspension (Bravecto Quantum™) was developed to help ensure year-round protection against these parasites. A study investigated the persistent efficacy of this formulation against repeated challenges with Rhipicephalus sanguineus (sensu lato) and Ctenocephalides felis throughout 12 months following a single subcutaneous treatment.

METHODS

Twenty dogs were blocked by pre-treatment R. sanguineus s.l. counts and randomized to an untreated control group or to a group treated once, on day 0, with the fluralaner injection (15 mg/kg). Infestations of 50 mixed-sex, unfed adult R. sanguineus s.l. and up to 100 C. felis were done on days 7, 14, 35, 63, 91, 126, 154, 182, 210, 245, 273, 301, 336 and 365. Live flea and tick counts were completed 48 h post-infestation. Flea infestations were also done on day -1, with counts on day 2. Infestations were considered adequate if at each evaluation, at least six dogs in the control group retained at least 20% of tick challenges and 25% of flea challenges.

RESULTS

The fluralaner injectable suspension was well tolerated. Efficacy against existing flea infestations was > 99% (arithmetic and geometric means) at 48 h post-treatment. At all subsequent assessments throughout the year following treatment, efficacy against fleas remained at 100%. Arithmetic mean tick count reductions relative to the control group ranged from 97.6% to 100% from day 7 through 11 months and was 92.6% at 12 months (geometric means 95.2% to 100% through 12 months).

CONCLUSION

The injectable fluralaner suspension was effective against fleas and brown dog ticks for 12 months following a single treatment. Compared with more frequently administered products where compliance may be suboptimal, the year-round efficacy of this veterinarian-administered fluralaner formulation has the potential to improve owner compliance for control of fleas and ticks. In turn, by reducing the detrimental effects of flea and tick infestations and risk of transmission of flea- and tick-borne pathogens, canine health can be enhanced.

Year-round efficacy of a single treatment of fluralaner injectable suspension (Bravecto QuantumTM) against repeated infestations with Ixodes holocyclus in dogs

BACKGROUND

The longer the duration of protection of an acaricide against canine infestation with Ixodes holocyclus, the lower the risk of gaps in tick control programs that will place dogs at risk of potentially fatal tick-induced paralysis. Two studies investigated the duration of efficacy provided by a novel injectable suspension of fluralaner (Bravecto QuantumTM) against this tick species.

METHODS

In both studies, 20 clinically healthy dogs were randomized to an untreated control group or to a group treated once, on Day 0, with the injectable fluralaner suspension (15 mg/kg). Dogs were infested with up to 25 unfed adult female I. holocyclus ticks on Day -1, during Weeks 1 and 2, and then at intervals no greater than approximately 3 months for the 13 months following treatment. Ticks were assessed in situ at 24 and 48 h and assessed and removed at 72 h following treatment and each subsequent infestation. Efficacy was determined by comparing arithmetic mean live tick (attached or free) counts in the treated group with the control group.

RESULTS

The untreated control dogs maintained adequate infestations for efficacy evaluations at all assessment weeks, with mean tick counts ranging from 16.2 to 21.6 in Study 1 and 14.0 to 23.5 in Study 2. The efficacy of fluralaner injectable suspension against existing infestations, determined 72 h following treatment administration, was 64.1% in Study 1 and 42.7% in Study 2. Efficacy against post-treatment infestations in Study 1 ranged from 95.7 to 100% from Week 1 through Week 57; in Study 2 efficacy was 100% at every assessment from Week 1 through Week 57. No treatment-related adverse events were recorded in either study.

CONCLUSION

The injectable fluralaner suspension was highly effective against I. holocyclus infestations of dogs from one week through 13 months following a single treatment. By placing treatment with the veterinarian, killing ticks within 72 h of attachment, and providing a full year of protection, fluralaner injectable suspension can help facilitate owner compliance with tick control treatment recommendations, thus reducing the risk of canine tick paralysis.

Two seasons of tick paralysis in Victoria yet one season in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia

We studied 22,840 cases of tick paralysis in dogs and cats that were attributable to infestation with the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus. We report that the mortality rates from the holocyclotoxins of the tick or from euthanasia due to complications arising from tick paralysis in dogs and cats were 10% and 8%, respectively. The distribution of cases of tick paralysis among the 52 weeks of 22 years (1999 to 2020, inclusive) in four regions along the eastern coast of Australia revealed much about how the life-cycle of this tick varied among regions. The four regions in our study were: (i) Cairns, Innisfail, and surrounding postcodes in Far North Queensland; (ii) South East Queensland; (iii) Northern Beaches of Sydney in New South Wales; and (iv) the Shire of East Gippsland in Victoria. We found that the season of tick paralysis started earlier in more northerly latitudes than in more southerly latitudes. We also found that Victoria has two seasons of tick paralysis, one from approximately the third week of February to the first week of May, and another from approximately the third week of September to the third week of December, whereas all of the other regions we studied in eastern Australia only had one season of tick paralysis. When we studied the two seasons of tick paralysis in Victoria, we found a statistically significant negative correlation between the number of cases of tick paralysis between the two seasons: the more cases in one season, the fewer the cases in the next season. One possible explanation for the negative correlation may be immunity to I. holocyclus acquired by dogs and cats in the first season.

Positive Airway Cultures in Dogs and Cats Receiving Mechanical Ventilation for Tick Paralysis

Animals with tick paralysis often require mechanical ventilation (MV) but previous publications have identified knowledge gaps regarding the development of bacterial pneumonia, and the specific pathogens involved. The objectives of this study were to describe the clinical course and culture and susceptibility profiles of bacteria isolated from airway samples of dogs and cats mechanically ventilated for tick paralysis that had positive airway cultures. Medical records were reviewed, and cases included if they had a positive airway sample culture during MV for tick paralysis. Twenty-four dogs and two cats were included. Most (85%) received empirical antimicrobials before airway sampling. The most common organisms isolated included Staphylococcus spp. (11), Klebsiella spp. (9), Enterococcus faecalis (8), Escherichia coli (6), Enterococcus faecium (3), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (4), and Mycoplasma spp. (3). Evidence of aspiration pneumonia was present in 22/25 (88%) cases that had thoracic radiographs performed. Seventy-seven percent of cases received antimicrobials to which the cultured bacteria were susceptible during hospitalisation. The median duration of MV was 4 days (range 1-10). Most (77%) survived to discharge, 19% were euthanised, and one died. In a multivariable logistic regression analysis it was identified that selection of antimicrobials to which the causative bacteria are susceptible was associated with survival to discharge (Odds ratio 45.8, p = 0.014; 95%CI 1.98-14,808), as was length of MV, with every day an animal is ventilated associated with a 4.7 times increased chance of survival (p = 0.015; 95% CI 1.21-78.4).

Safety and efficacy of a purified canine immunoglobulin G formulation for treatment of 76 cats clinically affected by the Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus)

Acute adverse reactions in cats administered unrefined canine paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) antiserum are commonly observed by veterinarians and can lead to significant morbidity and potentially fatal. A purified antiserum canine IgG concentrate was chromatographically prepared and aseptically formulated in single doses containing the equivalent of 5 mL of unrefined tick antiserum (TAS). The IgG was used for slow intravenous infusion into clinically affected cats at multiple veterinary clinics on the eastern seaboard of Australia. Overall, 72/76 (95%) of cats survived hospital discharge, an efficacy comparable to published data. A subset of 22 cats previously treated with unrefined TAS and considered high risk were included in the dataset. The safety profile was excellent with 0/76 acute adverse reactions although 2/76 (2.6%) developed mild facial swelling within 2 h of infusion that responded to the antihistamine. In conclusion, cats intravenously infused with purified IgG from canine TAS did not exhibit the expected frequency of acute adverse reactions during infusion and it was both safe and effective for the treatment of tick paralysis in cats.

Mortality, incidence and seasonality of canine and feline patients treated with tick antiserum in three far North Queensland veterinary clinics from 2000 to 2020

Tick paralysis is a paralysis caused by bites from Ixodes holocyclus, affecting an estimated 10,000 companion animals in Australia annually. Despite tick antiserum being the cornerstone of treatment, there are no large-scale general practice studies that examine survival outcomes in tick antiserum-treated animals. In this retrospective study, clinical records from three far north Queensland general practice veterinary clinics were searched for tick antiserum-treated canine and feline patients were seen between 2000 and 2020. Patient records were assessed for survival outcomes, then logistic regression and Bayesian structural time-series model were used to assess trends in incidence and mortality and the relationship between these and time of year, rainfall, and species. The study included 2019 dog and 953 cat records. When patients with unknown outcomes were removed, canine mortality was 11.8% (213/1799) and feline mortality was 5.3% (46/872). Dogs were found to have 2.41 odds of dying following treatment than cats. August and September had the highest mean number of monthly treatments, and rainfall in the previous 5-8 months was positively correlated with the number of patients treated in each month. The odds of mortality did not vary significantly by month or season, and from 2015 onwards, there was a significant decrease in the proportion of dogs treated by the clinics. Overall, this study provides new information on tick antiserum treatment outcomes in general practice as well as new information on tick paralysis incidence in far north Queensland.

A remarkable assemblage of ticks from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber

Four fossil ticks (Arachnida: Parasitiformes: Ixodida) are described from mid-Cretaceous (ca. 100 Ma) Burmese amber of Myanmar. Ixodes antiquorum sp. nov. (Ixodidae) is the first Mesozoic record of Ixodes and the oldest representative of the most species-rich extant tick genus. Its affinities appear to lie with modern Australian forms, consistent with the hypothesis that Burmese amber hosted Gondwanan faunal elements. Even more remarkable is Khimaira fossus gen. et sp. nov. which combines a body resembling that of a soft tick (Argasidae) with a basis capitulum more like that of a hard tick (Ixodidae). We refer it to Khimairidae fam. nov. as a possible transitional form between the two main families of ticks alive today. Another member of the extinct Deinocrotonidae is described as Deinocroton copia sp. nov., while the first described adult female for Cornupalpatum burmanicum is associated with a dinosaur feather barb.

Near-term forecasting of companion animal tick paralysis incidence: An iterative ensemble model

Tick paralysis resulting from bites from Ixodes holocyclus and I. cornuatus is one of the leading causes of emergency veterinary admissions for companion animals in Australia, often resulting in death if left untreated. Availability of timely information on periods of increased risk can help modulate behaviors that reduce exposures to ticks and improve awareness of owners for the need of lifesaving preventative ectoparasite treatment. Improved awareness of clinicians and pet owners about temporal changes in tick paralysis risk can be assisted by ecological forecasting frameworks that integrate environmental information into statistical time series models. Using an 11-year time series of tick paralysis cases from veterinary clinics in one of Australia's hotspots for the paralysis tick Ixodes holocyclus, we asked whether an ensemble model could accurately forecast clinical caseloads over near-term horizons. We fit a series of statistical time series (ARIMA, GARCH) and generative models (Prophet, Generalised Additive Model) using environmental variables as predictors, and then combined forecasts into a weighted ensemble to minimise prediction interval error. Our results indicate that variables related to temperature anomalies, levels of vegetation moisture and the Southern Oscillation Index can be useful for predicting tick paralysis admissions. Our model forecasted tick paralysis cases with exceptional accuracy while preserving epidemiological interpretability, outperforming a field-leading benchmark Exponential Smoothing model by reducing both point and prediction interval errors. Using online particle filtering to assimilate new observations and adjust forecast distributions when new data became available, our model adapted to changing temporal conditions and provided further reduced forecast errors. We expect our model pipeline to act as a platform for developing early warning systems that can notify clinicians and pet owners about heightened risks of environmentally driven veterinary conditions.

Eight-month repellency and efficacy of an imidacloprid/flumethrin (Seresto® ) collar against the eastern paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) on cats

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to determine the repellency and efficacy of a 10% imidacloprid/4.5% flumethrin (Seresto^® , Elanco) collar over an 8-month period against the eastern paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) on cats.

METHODS

Two non-blinded, open gender, randomised, placebo-controlled pen studies were conducted, with 26 cats enrolled in each study. Prior to inclusion, cats were immunised with I. holocyclus holocyclotoxin. Cats were treated on Day 0 with either an imidacloprid/flumethrin or placebo collar. Tick infestations with 20 unfed adult female eastern paralysis ticks commenced on Day 7, and were repeated monthly for 8 months. Repellency was determined by comparing the mean number of attached ticks on imidacloprid/flumethrin treated cats, to placebo collar treated cats at 6 and 24 h post infestation. Efficacy was determined by comparing the mean number of live ticks on imidacloprid/flumethrin collar treated cats to placebo collar treated cats at 72 h post infestation.

RESULTS

Efficacy was 100% (P < 0.001) at 72 h, and repellency was greater than 96% (P < 0.001) at 24 h for every tick challenge in each of the two studies, from Day 7 to the final infestation at 8 months for imidacloprid/flumethrin collar treated cats.

CONCLUSIONS

In two pen studies, an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar controlled and repelled the eastern paralysis tick (I. holocyclus) on cats for 8-months. The marked repellency effect in addition to controlling tick paralysis would be beneficial in preventing tick bites and their sequelae.

Tick paralysis in Australian birds caused by Ixodes holocyclus

Tick paralysis is an uncommon cause of neuromuscular paralysis affecting 0.12% of wild birds presented to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Queensland, with a strong seasonal predilection towards spring and summer. Clinical signs and progression of paralysis showed similarities to companion animals and were consistent across 20 species. Tick location, number of engorged ticks and number of clinical signs did not affect the outcome; however, all mortalities occurred within 4 days of admission. Treatment with canine-derived tick antiserum resulted in clinical improvement within 24 h and a recovery rate of 73%. Average time to resolution of clinical signs was 4.3 days, with juvenile birds recovering more quickly than adults. The treatment and release of wild birds affected by tick paralysis are both achievable and rewarding, further research is required to establish treatment guidelines in birds.

Entomopathogenic Fungi and Bacteria in a Veterinary Perspective

Simple Summary

Several fungal species are well suited to control arthropods, being able to cause epizootic infection among them and most of them infect their host by direct penetration through the arthropod’s tegument. Most of organisms are related to the biological control of crop pests, but, more recently, have been applied to combat some livestock ectoparasites. Among the entomopathogenic bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis, innocuous for humans, animals, and plants and isolated from different environments, showed the most relevant activity against arthropods. Its entomopathogenic property is related to the production of highly biodegradable proteins. Entomopathogenic fungi and bacteria are usually employed against agricultural pests, and some studies have focused on their use to control animal arthropods. However, risks of infections in animals and humans are possible; thus, further studies about their activity are necessary.

Abstract

The present study aimed to review the papers dealing with the biological activity of fungi and bacteria against some mites and ticks of veterinary interest. In particular, the attention was turned to the research regarding acarid species, Dermanyssus gallinae and Psoroptes sp., which are the cause of severe threat in farm animals and, regarding ticks, also pets. Their impact on animal and human health has been stressed, examining the weaknesses and strengths of conventional treatments. Bacillus thuringiensis, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae are the most widely employed agents. Their activities have been reviewed, considering the feasibility of an in-field application and the effectiveness of the administration alone or combined with conventional and alternative drugs is reported.

Protecting dogs and cats against the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus (Acari: Ixodidae): A review of the Australian acaricide registration process

Tick control is mainly achieved through the use of effective ectoparasiticides that can be either dermally or systemically distributed in/on the host. Before any acaricide can be legally made available to veterinarians and pet owners, it must demonstrate efficacy in a series of well-designed dose confirmation studies. The data generated during these studies are then reviewed by government regulators and used for the registration of the acaricide. In Australia, the most significant tick species is the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus. This three-host tick produces a potent neurotoxin (holocyclotoxin) that induces a rapidly ascending flaccid paralysis that can be fatal to companion animals and larger mammals such as cattle and horses. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is the national Australian regulator which sets the data requirements for the registration of acaricides. This paper reviews the requirements set by the APVMA and puts them in direct context with the biology, distribution and reported acaricide susceptibility of I. holocyclus. An overview of acaricides currently registered in Australia for the control of I. holocyclus in dogs and cats, their reported efficacy data and the conduct of I. holocyclus efficacy trials are also provided.

Importation of Ticks on Companion Animals and the Risk of Spread of Tick-Borne Diseases to Non-Endemic Regions in Europe

Increased human mobility elevates the risk of exposure of companion animals travelling with their owners or imported from other regions to tick attacks. In this study, we highlight the potential role of dogs and cats taken for tourist trips or imported animals in the spread of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. The Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick, which is a vector of numerous pathogens causing diseases in animals and humans, is imported most frequently from endemic areas to many European countries. Additionally, alien tick species with high epizootic and epidemiological importance can be imported on dogs from other continents. Companion animals play an even greater role in the spread of autochthonous tick species and transmission of tick pathogens to other animals and humans. Although the veterinary and medical effects of the parasitism of ticks carried by companion animals travelling with owners or imported animals are poorly assessed, these animals seem to play a role in the rapid spread of tick-borne diseases. Development of strategies for protection of the health of companion animals in different geographic regions should take into account the potential emergence of unknown animal tick-borne diseases that can be transmitted by imported ticks.

Efficacy of combination products containing sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) or afoxolaner and milbemycin (NexGard Spectra®) against induced infestations of Ixodes holocyclus in dogs

BACKGROUND

The Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, causes tick paralysis in dogs and cats in the eastern coastal regions of Australia. Prevention is the best option to protect dogs against this potentially fatal disease and sarolaner provides rapid and sustained efficacy against I. holocyclus. In this laboratory study, the efficacy of two combination endectocides containing sarolaner + moxidectin + pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) and afoxolaner + milbemycin (NexGard Spectra^®) was evaluated against an artificial infestation of I. holocyclus.

METHODS

Twenty-four (n =24) foxhounds were randomly allocated to three treatment groups and artificially infested with 30 adult female viable ticks on Days - 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. On Day 0, dogs in each treatment group were treated with either Drontal^® (control group), Simparica Trio™ at the label dose to provide minimum doses of sarolaner (1.2 mg/kg), moxidectin (24 µg/kg) and pyrantel (5 mg/kg) or NexGard Spectra^® to provide minimum doses of afoxolaner (2.5 mg/kg) and milbemycin (0.5 mg/kg). Live tick counts were performed at 48 and 72 hours after treatment and after each re-infestation on Days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. Efficacy was determined at each time point relative to counts for control dogs based on geometric means.

RESULTS

Against an existing infestation, efficacy of both Simparica Trio™ and NexGard Spectra^® was 99.6% and 100% at 48 and 72 h time points, respectively (P = 1.000). Against subsequent weekly infestations, treatment with Simparica Trio™ and NexGard Spectra^® resulted in efficacy of ≥ 97.7% and ≥ 95.5% (P ≥ 0.0911), respectively at the 48 h time point and at the 72 h time point, Simparica Trio™ and NexGard Spectra^® resulted in efficacy of ≥ 99.0% and ≥ 98.4% (P ≥ 0.0511), respectively. There were no treatment-related adverse events in the study.

CONCLUSIONS

Single doses of Simparica Trio™ and NexGard Spectra^® were highly efficacious and provided comparable efficacy against the Australian paralysis tick, I. holocyclus for up to 35 days.

Invasive rabbits host immature Ixodes ticks at the urban-forest interface

Introduced wildlife may be important alternative hosts for generalist ticks that cause health issues for humans and companion animals in urban areas, but to date are rarely considered as part of the tick-host community compared to native wildlife. In Australia, European rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, are a widespread and abundant invasive species common to a range of human-modified ecosystems. To understand the potential role of rabbits in the life cycle of Australian ticks, we investigated the seasonal abundance of all tick life stages (larva, nymph, and adult) on rabbits collected from pest control programs in two urban forest remnants in Sydney, Australia. We also recorded whether larvae, nymphs, and adults were attached to the head, body, or limbs of rabbits to reveal patterns of tick attachment. Of the 2426 Ixodes ticks collected from 42 rabbits, larvae were by far the most abundant life stage (2360), peaking in abundance in autumn, while small numbers of nymphs (62) and adults (4) were present in winter and summer respectively. Larvae were found all over the body, whereas adults and nymphs were predominantly attached to the head, suggesting that the mature life stages use the host landscape differently, or that adults or nymphs may be groomed off the body. The most abundant tick species, as determined by morphology and DNA sequencing, was Ixodes holocyclus, a generalist tick responsible for significant human and companion animal health concerns in Australia. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding the role of introduced wildlife in tick dynamics particularly in novel ecosystems where non-native hosts may be more abundant than native hosts.
