Abstract
Tools and resources that could increase dog vaccination coverage have become increasingly critical towards progressing the goal to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies by 2030. In this regard, dog collars that are fitted during vaccination campaigns could potentially enhance owner participation. The use of dog collars will, however, increase the cost per dog vaccinated and the impact and benefit of this practice should be elucidated. This study evaluated the impact of dog collars by testing the perception and related behavioural influences in communities in Zanzibar. In this cross-sectional investigation-conducted approximately two months after the implementation of a mass dog vaccination (MDV) where dog collars were provided to vaccinated dogs-data were collected from 600 respondents in 56 municipal wards in Zanzibar. Descriptive analyses and logistic regressions were undertaken to determine the impact the collars had on respondents with regards to (i) engaging with the community dogs, (ii) health seeking behaviour after exposure, and (iii) overall participation during dog vaccination campaigns. From the data, it was evident that the collars had a positive impact on the community's perception of dogs, with 57% of the respondents feeling safer around a dog with a collar, while 66% of the respondents felt less safe around a dog without a collar. Furthermore, the collars had a positive impact on participation during dog vaccination campaigns. Of the 142 respondents who owned dogs, 64% reported that the collars made them more likely to take their dogs for vaccination, and 95% felt that the collar was an important sign of the dog's vaccination status. This study demonstrated that dog collars could not only improve participation during dog vaccination campaigns, but that they could also play a significant role in the community's perception of rabies vaccination campaigns and vaccinated dogs in general.

Abstract
The management of canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is complex, and it needs to be multimodal, combining topical and systemic therapies. Given that the currently available options are not always totally effective and might have some associated adverse effects, novel alternatives are needed. For this reason, a new collar for CAD was developed with 2.5% of a sphingomyelin-rich lipid extract (LE) with proven benefits for skin health. The release of the active ingredient when incorporated into the collar was tested in vitro, showing an adequate kinetic profile. Then, the efficacy and safety of the collar were assessed in 12 client-owned dogs with CAD in a pilot study. After eight weeks, the dogs experienced significant clinical improvements on the Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (CADESI)-4, Pruritus Index for Canine Atopic Dermatitis (PCAD) and Pruritus Visual Analogue Scale (PVAS) scores, without any adverse effects. Additionally, further in vitro studies were performed, indicating that this LE collar should be compatible with antiparasitic collars (with deltamethrin or imidacloprid/flumethrin) if worn simultaneously. Given the observed benefits of this LE collar, combining it with other CAD therapies could potentially allow for drug sparing, reduction in adverse effects, enhanced owner compliance, and reduced treatment costs.

Abstract
Introduction: Limb-salvage surgery using endoprosthetic replacements (EPRs) is frequently used to reconstruct segmental bone defects, but the reconstruction longevity is still a major concern. In EPRs, the stem-collar junction is the most critical region for bone resorption. We hypothesised that an in-lay collar would be more likely to promote bone ongrowth in Proximal Femur Reconstruction (PFR), and we tested this hypothesis through validated Finite Element (FE) analyses simulating the maximum load during walking. Methods: We simulated three different femur reconstruction lengths (proximal, mid-diaphyseal, and distal). For each reconstruction length one in-lay and one traditional on-lay collar model was built and compared. All reconstructions were virtually implanted in a population-average femur. Personalised Finite Element models were built from Computed Tomography for the intact case and for all reconstruction cases, including contact interfaces where appropriate. We compared the mechanical environment in the in-lay and on-lay collar configurations, through metrics of reconstruction safety, osseointegration potential, and risk of long-term bone resorption due to stress-shielding. Results: In all models, differences with respect to intact conditions were localized at the inner bone-implant interface, being more marked in the collar-bone interface. In proximal and mid-diaphyseal reconstructions, the in-lay configuration doubled the area in contact at the bone-collar interface with respect to the on-lay configuration, showed less critical values and trends of contact micromotions, and consistently showed higher (roughly double) volume percentages of predicted bone apposition and reduced (up to one-third) percentages of predicted bone resorption. In the most distal reconstruction, results for the in-lay and on-lay configurations were generally similar and showed overall less favourable maps of the bone remodelling tendency. Discussion: In summary, the models corroborate the hypothesis that an in-lay collar, by realising a more uniform load transfer into the bone with a more physiological pattern, creates an advantageous mechanical environment at the bone-collar interface, compared to an on-lay design. Therefore, it could significantly increase the survivorship of endo-prosthetic replacements.

Abstract
The sound amplification ratios of sealed air chambers with different shapes were quantitatively compared to design a body-conduction microphone to measure animal scratching sounds. Recently, quantitative monitoring of scratching intensity in dogs has been required. We have already developed a collar with a body-conduction microphone to measure body-conducted scratching sounds. However, the air chamber, one of the components of the body-conduction microphone, has not been appropriately designed. This study compared the amplification ratios of air chambers with different shapes through numerical analysis and experiments. According to the results, the horn-shaped air chamber achieved the highest amplification performance, at least for sound frequencies below 3 kHz. The simulated amplification ratio of the horn-shaped air chamber with a 1 mm height and a 15 mm diameter was 52.5 dB. The deformation of the bottom of the air chamber affected the amplification ratio. Adjusting the margin of the margined horn shape could maintain its amplification ratio at any pressing force. The simulated and experimental amplification ratios of the margined horn-shaped air chamber were 53.4 dB and 19.4 dB, respectively.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Systematic Review. OBJECTIVES To determine the radiographic and clinical utility of postoperative orthoses following cervical spine surgery. METHODS We performed a search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline Ovid, and SCOPUS databases from inception until November 2021. Eligible studies included outcomes of postoperative bracing vs no bracing following cervical spine surgery. The primary outcome of interest was fusion rates after cervical surgery in braced vs unbraced patients. Secondary outcomes included patient reported outcomes and complication rates. RESULTS A total of 3232 titles were initially screened. After inclusion criteria were applied, 7 studies (550 patients) were included, which compared results of braced vs unbraced patients after cervical spine surgery. These studies showed acceptable reliability for inclusion based on the Methodical Index for Non-Randomized studies and Critical Appraisal Skills Programme assessment tools. There were no significant differences in fusion rates or complications between braced vs unbraced patients identified in any study. Patient reported pain and quality of life measures between braced and unbraced groups varied amongst studies, without any clear overall advantages favoring either method. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review found that external bracing, though widely used following cervical spine surgery, may not offer any advantages in patient-reported outcomes, as compared to not bracing. In regard to the effect of bracing on fusion rates, no strong consensus can be made as the methods of fusion assessment in the included studies were heterogenous and suboptimal. Future high-quality studies using recommended methods of fusion assessment are needed to adequately address this important question.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although mostly used in the management of spinal trauma, hard collar immobilisation is also used as an adjunct to recovery after elective cervical spine surgery. Many surgeons believe that bracing reduces the risk of non-union and pain and provides a subjective sense of security for patients. There is little if any, evidence for this practice and immobilisation can be a direct cause of adverse events. The primary aim of this study was to provide an updated assessment of post-operative bracing practice in UK spinal surgeons, including the indications, rationale and perspectives on compliance and complications. METHODS Neurosurgeons and spinal orthopaedic surgeons completed a web-based survey distributed by email to members of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and the British Association of Spinal Surgeons (BASS). Professional information captured included level of experience and whether surgeons had a specialist interest in spinal surgery. Questions first focused on the frequency and duration of hard collar immobilisation for common decompressive procedures. Later questions captured surgeon rationale, perceptions of patient compliance, complications, and collar removal. RESULTS A total of 86 surgeons completed the survey, of whom 83% were spinal specialists. In total, 33 (38%) surgeons recommend a hard collar following at least one of the elective procedures listed. Collars were most commonly recommended following cervical corpectomy (30%). The support of fusion and bone healing was the most common rationale (82%), with post-operative pain (45%) and limiting patient activity (39%) also considered. Most surgeons (69%) believed that their patients were compliant. All listed types of complications were reported, with impaired activities of daily living (41%) and impaired sleep (34%) the most frequently cited. CONCLUSIONS Current post-operative use of hard collars is much lower in the United Kingdom than previously reported in the United States. Surgeon decision-making is inconsistent and may benefit from greater standardisation. Future work is needed to help develop guidelines as a move away from arbitrary to evidence-based practice.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an imidacloprid 10% and flumethrin 4.5% polymer matrix collar against the developmental stages of Haemaphysalis longicornis infesting dogs using the hair from treated dogs in a semi-in-vitro assay set. When incubated with 0.5 g of the hair collected from the dogs installed with the drug-embedded collar after 10 days, average death rate of the larval, nymphal, and adult H. longicornis was 21.5%, 77.9%, and 100% at 30 min, 1 hr, and 2 hr, respectively. This study showed the larval stages as well as the nymphal and adult stages of H. longicornis ticks are killed upon contact with the hair from dogs treated with the collar within 2 hr.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine the repellency and efficacy of a 10% imidacloprid/4.5% flumethrin (Seresto® , Elanco) collar over an 8-month period against the eastern paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) on cats. METHODS Two non-blinded, open gender, randomised, placebo-controlled pen studies were conducted, with 26 cats enrolled in each study. Prior to inclusion, cats were immunised with I. holocyclus holocyclotoxin. Cats were treated on Day 0 with either an imidacloprid/flumethrin or placebo collar. Tick infestations with 20 unfed adult female eastern paralysis ticks commenced on Day 7, and were repeated monthly for 8 months. Repellency was determined by comparing the mean number of attached ticks on imidacloprid/flumethrin treated cats, to placebo collar treated cats at 6 and 24 h post infestation. Efficacy was determined by comparing the mean number of live ticks on imidacloprid/flumethrin collar treated cats to placebo collar treated cats at 72 h post infestation. RESULTS Efficacy was 100% (P < 0.001) at 72 h, and repellency was greater than 96% (P < 0.001) at 24 h for every tick challenge in each of the two studies, from Day 7 to the final infestation at 8 months for imidacloprid/flumethrin collar treated cats. CONCLUSIONS In two pen studies, an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar controlled and repelled the eastern paralysis tick (I. holocyclus) on cats for 8-months. The marked repellency effect in addition to controlling tick paralysis would be beneficial in preventing tick bites and their sequelae.

Abstract
The use of sensor technologies to monitor cows' behavior is becoming commonplace in the context of dairy production. This study aimed at validating a commercial collar-based sensor system, the AFICollar® (Afimilk, Kibbutz Afikim, Israel), designed to monitor dairy cattle feeding and ruminating behavior. Additionally, the performances of two versions of the software for behavior classification, the current software AFIfarm® 5.4 and the updated version AFIfarm® 5.5, were compared. The study involved twenty Holstein-Friesian cows fitted with the collars. To evaluate the sensor performance under different feeding scenarios, the animals were divided into four groups and fed three different types of feed (total mixed ration, long hay, animals allowed to graze). Recordings of hourly rumination and feeding time produced by the sensor were compared with visual observation by scan sampling at 1 minute intervals using Spearman correlation, concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), Bland-Altman plots and linear mixed models for assessing the precision and accuracy of the system. The analyses confirmed that the updated software version V5.5 produced better detection performance than the current V5.4. The updated software version produced high correlations between visual observations and data recorded by the sensor for both feeding (r = 0.85, CCC = 0.86) and rumination (r = 0.83, CCC = 0.86). However, the limits of agreement for both behaviors remained quite wide (feeding: -19.60 min/h, 17.46 min/h; rumination: -15.80 min/h, 15.00 min/h). Type of feed did not produce significant effects on the agreement between visual observations and sensor recordings. Overall, the results indicate that the system can provide farmers with adequately accurate data on feeding and rumination time, and can be used to support herd management decisions. Despite all this, the precision of the system remained relatively limited, and should be improved with further developments in the classification algorithm.

Abstract
Leash pulling is a concern for dog owners and can be detrimental to the health and welfare of dogs. Neck-collars and back-connection harnesses are popular restraint types. Harnesses have been proposed as a better and more considerate option for canine health and welfare. Anecdotally, dogs pull more when wearing a back-connection harness; however, there is no scientific evidence for this perception. This study aimed to investigate how strongly dogs pull on the lead to achieve a food treat or toy under restraint by a neck-collar versus a back-connection harness. A within-subject counterbalanced design was used for the study, involving 52 shelter dogs. A customised canine leash tension metre was connected to the collar or harness to record the pulling of the dogs, including measuring the maximal and mean leash tension, and the time spent pulling. In addition, dog behaviours were recorded using two cameras from two separate directions. The maximal and mean leash tension and the pulling time were greater under restraint by harness when attracting dogs with food treats. No significant difference between harness and collar was found in potential stress-related behaviours (e.g. tail and ear positions, lip-licking, and panting). However, dogs looked at the experimenter more often when restrained by harness than collar in the food treat attraction test. No significant difference was detected between harness and collar with respect to leash tension and stress-related behaviours in the toy attraction test. These findings suggest that dogs tend to pull stronger and more steadily when wearing a back-connection harness compared to a neck collar to reach the food treat but not the toy.

Abstract
Simple Summary To increase the probability of reunions occurring between owners and lost pets, tracking devices are applied to pets. The pet’s position is determined by satellites (e.g., GPS) and transmitted by radio frequencies (RFs) to a mobile phone. In this study, the health risks from exposure to radio frequencies emitted by radios, TVs, mobile networks, indoor devices (e.g., WLAN, Bluetooth), mobile phones, and in the use of such tracking devices were investigated. The radiation exposure was found to be well below international limit values, which means that adverse health effects are unlikely to occur. The risk of high exposure of pets is mainly caused by indoor RF-emitting devices, such as WLAN devices. This exposure can be limited through a reduction in the exposure time and an increase in the distance between the animal and the RF-emitting device. Even though the exposure of pets to total radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) levels was found to be below the limit values—and, therefore, not a health risk—recommendations are given for the use of tracking devices and to limit the exposure to indoor devices. Abstract Every year, approximately 3% of cats and dogs are lost. In addition to passive methods for identifying pets, radiofrequency tracking devices (TDs) are available. These TDs can track a pet’s geographic position, which is transmitted by radio frequencies. The health risk to the animals from continuous exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) was reviewed. Fourteen out of twenty-one commercially available TDs use 2G, 3G, or 4G mobile networks, and the others work with public frequencies, WLAN, Bluetooth, etc. The exposure of pets to RF-EMFs was assessed, including ambient exposure (radios, TVs, and base stations of mobile networks), exposure from indoor devices (DECT, WLAN, Bluetooth, etc.), and the exposure from TDs. The exposure levels of the three areas were found to be distinctly below the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) reference levels, which assure far-reaching protection from adverse health effects. The highest uncertainty regarding the exposure of pets was related to that caused by indoor RF-emitting devices using WLAN and DECT. This exposure can be limited considerably through a reduction in the exposure time and an increase in the distance between the animal and the RF-emitting device. Even though the total RF-EMF exposure level experienced by pets was found to be below the reference limits, recommendations were derived to reduce potential risks from exposure to TDs and indoor devices.

Abstract
No definite consensus exists for the clearance of the cervical spine (C-spine)
after blunt trauma, despite many validated algorithms, recommendations and
guidelines. We intend to answer the most relevant questions with which physicians
are confronted when clearing C-spines after blunt trauma in emergency departments
(EDs). To exclude significant C-spine injuries we designed an algorithm to be
compatible with clinical practice, to simplify patient management and avoid
unrewarding evaluation. We conducted an exploratory PubMed search including articles published from January
2000 to October 2018. Keywords used were “cervical spine”,
“injury”, “clearance”, “Canadian C-spine
Rule”, “CCR” and “national emergency x-radiography
utilization study”. Clinical and experimental studies were included in a
detailed review. We based our literature review on 33 articles. While answering fundamental triage
questions from daily clinical practice, the current literature is discussed in
detail. We designed an algorithm for the C-spine clearance suitable for any trauma
centre with a high-quality multiplanar reconstruction computerized tomography (CT)
scan continuously available. The high sensitivity of the Canadian C-spine Rule (CCR) prevents missing C-spine
injuries while limiting the amount of unnecessary radiologic examinations. Plain
radiographs were fully abandoned for C-spine clearance. A negative CT scan is
sufficient to clear the majority of C-spine injuries and allows for collar removal.
In case of motor symptoms or radio-clinical discrepancy, the advice of a specialized
spine surgeon must be requested. Magnetic resonance imaging must not be routinely
used. Neck pain despite negative imaging is not a reason to delay removal of stiff
cervical collars.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study is to elucidate the current practice patterns of Canadian neurosurgeons with regards to anterior cervical discectomy (ACD). Methods A one-page questionnaire was sent out using SurveyMonkey to all neurosurgeon members of the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation (CNSF). End points were surgeon preference for ACD surgical method, graft source, the length of collar usage and the recommended time before returning to work. Results Response rate was 74.0%. Of the responders, 75.0% performed single level ACD and 18.3% had completed spine fellowships. The majority (68.2%) chose ACD with fusion and plating (ACDFP) as their preferred method with allograft being the most popular choice of fusion material (44.3%). Most of the respondents did not prescribe collars (60.9%) and when they did, hard collar was prescribed most often (76.9%) and AspenTM collar was the most popular choice (67.7%). The majority of surgeons chose 'other' as their response for length of time for collar use (40.0%) while allowing them to take their collars off at night (78.1%). Most of the surgeons recommended physiotherapy post-operatively (58.1%) and time to physiotherapy was 6-8 weeks. Recommended back to work time was 6 weeks for 44.9% of respondents. In the cross analysis, surgeons who performed ACDF were more likely to prescribe collars (50%, P=0.01) versus surgeons who performed ACDFP (21.7%, P=0.01). Conclusions Our survey is an up to date description of current practice patterns for ACD amongst Canadian neurosurgeons.

Abstract
CONTEXT Cooling the torso and neck can improve exercise performance and capacity in a hot environment; however, the proposed mechanisms for the improvements often differ. OBJECTIVE To directly compare the effects of cooling the neck and torso region using commercially available devices on exercise capacity in a hot environment (temperature = 35°C ± 0.1°C, relative humidity = 50.1% ± 0.7%). DESIGN Crossover study. SETTING Laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS Eight recreationally active, nonheat-acclimated men (age = 24 ± 4 years, height = 1.82 ± 0.10 m, mass = 80.3 ± 9.7 kg, maximal power output = 240 ± 25 W). INTERVENTION(S) Three cycling capacity tests at 60% maximal power output to volitional exhaustion: 1 with no cooling (NC), 1 with vest cooling (VC), and 1 with a neck cooling collar (CC). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Time to volitional exhaustion, rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, torso and neck skin temperature, body mass, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, thermal sensation, and feeling scale were measured. RESULTS Participants cycled longer with VC (32.2 ± 9.5 minutes) than NC (27. 6 ± 7.6 minutes; P = .03; d = 0.54) or CC (30.0 ± 8.8 minutes; P = .02; d = 0.24). We observed no difference between NC and CC (P = .12; d = 0.31). Neck and torso temperature and perceived thermal sensation were reduced with the use of cooling modalities (P < .001), but no other variables were affected. CONCLUSIONS Cycling capacity in the heat improved when participants used a commercially available cooling vest, but we observed no benefit from wearing a commercially available CC. The vest and the collar did not alter the heart rate, rectal temperature, skin temperature, or sweat-loss responses to the cycling bout.

Abstract
Vitamin C has efficient antioxidant properties and is involved in important physiological processes such as collagen synthesis. As such, vitamin C deficiency leads to serious complications, including vascular diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin C treatment on collar-induced intimal thickening. Rabbits were fed a normocholesterolemic diet and a non-occlusive silicon collar was placed around the left carotid artery for 3, 7, and 14 days. The rabbits were treated with or without vitamin C (150 mg/kg/day). Collar-induced intimal thickening became apparent at day 7. The effect of the collar on intimal thickening was more prominent at day 14. Vitamin C treatment significantly inhibited collar-induced intimal thickening at day 14. The placement of the collar around the carotid artery decreased maximum contractile responses against contractile agents (KCl, phenylephrine, 5-hydroxytryptamine). The effect of the collar on contractile responses was enhanced as days elapsed. Decreased contractile responses of collared carotid arteries normalized at day 14 in the vitamin C treatment group. Vitamin C treatment also restored sensitivity to phenylephrine. The collar also significantly decreased acetylcholine-induced relaxations at day 3 and day 7. Acetylcholine-induced relaxations normalized in collared-arteries in the placebo group at day 14. Vitamin C treatment significantly increased acetylcholine-induced relaxations of both normal and collared carotid arteries at day 14. MMP-9 expression increased in collared arteries at day 3 and day 7 but did not change at day 14. MMP-2 expression increased in collared arteries at day 14. However, vitamin C treatment reduced collar-stimulated expression of MMP-2 at day 14. These findings indicate that vitamin C may have potentially beneficial effects on the early stages of atherosclerosis. Furthermore these results, for the first time, may indicate that vitamin C can also normalize decreased contractile response through perivascular collar placement.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the beneficial effects of a far-infrared-emitting collar (FIRC) on the management of neck disorders. A neck disorder is generalized as neck muscle pain and its relative mental disorders because the etiologies of the neck's multidimensional syndrome are either muscle impairment or psychiatric distress. This is the first study to determine the efficacy of a FIRC by evaluating objective physical evidence and psychometric self-reports using a parallel-arm randomized sham-controlled and single-blinded design. In this trial, 60 participants with neck disorders were observed at baseline and post-intervention. Compared to the placebo group after a 30-min intervention, the FIRC demonstrated a statistically significant biological effect in elevating skin temperature and promoting blood circulation with p-values 0.003 and 0.020, respectively. In addition, FIRC application significantly reduced neck muscle tension, relieved pain, ameliorated fatigue, improved depression, and decreased anxiety. The FIRC could therefore be a potential treatment for neck disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Management of the cervical spine following blunt trauma is commonplace. In 2013, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) published practice guidelines drawn from evidence dating to 2011. Since then, further publications have emerged that are reviewed, and a simple management algorithm produced to assist practitioners in Australian trauma centres. These publications attempt to shed light on two controversial scenarios, those being the management of symptomatic patients with negative computed tomography (CT) and management of the obtunded patient. METHODS The search strategy mirrored that of the AANS/CNS guidelines. A search of the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) database for manuscripts published between January 2011 and October 2014 was conducted. One reviewer extracted data from studies assessing the performance of various imaging modalities in identifying traumatic cervical spine injuries. In clinical scenarios where little evidence has emerged since the AANS/CNS guidelines, key manuscripts published prior to 2011 were identified from bibliographies. RESULTS Awake, asymptomatic patients may be 'cleared' without further imaging. Awake, symptomatic patients without pathology on CT and without neurological deficit can safely be 'cleared' without magnetic resonance imaging. There is no longer a role for flexion-extension films. In the obtunded patient, findings remain conflicting. CONCLUSION Several of these findings represent a departure from previous practices, including clearance of patients with non-neurological symptoms on the basis of CT and the exclusion of flexion-extension film in detecting injury. Management of the obtunded patient remains controversial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND cervical sprain or whiplash incidence has high costs in medical care, disabilities and work absences. The aim was to demonstrate that disability days caused by cervical sprain I and II are reduced without the use of neck immobilizer collar (NIC). METHODS a transverse study in 100 patients with cervical sprain I and II at the emergency room was evaluated. The use of the collar and disability days was measured. Descriptive statistics were used. RESULTS patients treated with NIC and anti-inflammatory medications (AI) were 68 % of patients and 32 % of patients were treated without NIC and only with AI. The mean work absence was 11.75 days in 86 % of patients, 74.4 % used NIC. Within the patients (14 %) that had no work absence, only 28.6 % used NIC with a χ(2) = 11.63 and a p < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS the days of disability and recovery were lower in patients who did not use the collar.

Abstract
The vertebrate oral region represents a key interface between outer and inner environments, and its structural and functional design is among the limiting factors for survival of its owners. Both formation of the respective oral opening (primary mouth) and establishment of the food-processing apparatus (secondary mouth) require interplay between several embryonic tissues and complex embryonic rearrangements. Although many aspects of the secondary mouth formation, including development of the jaws, teeth or taste buds, are known in considerable detail, general knowledge about primary mouth formation is regrettably low. In this paper, primary mouth formation is reviewed from a comparative point of view in order to reveal its underestimated morphogenetic diversity among, and also within, particular vertebrate clades. In general, three main developmental modes were identified. The most common is characterized by primary mouth formation via a deeply invaginated ectodermal stomodeum and subsequent rupture of the bilaminar oral membrane. However, in salamander, lungfish and also in some frog species, the mouth develops alternatively via stomodeal collar formation contributed both by the ecto- and endoderm. In ray-finned fishes, on the other hand, the mouth forms via an ectoderm wedge and later horizontal detachment of the initially compressed oral epithelia with probably a mixed germ-layer derivation. A very intriguing situation can be seen in agnathan fishes: whereas lampreys develop their primary mouth in a manner similar to the most common gnathostome pattern, hagfishes seem to undergo a unique oropharyngeal morphogenesis when compared with other vertebrates. In discussing the early formative embryonic correlates of primary mouth formation likely to be responsible for evolutionary-developmental modifications of this area, we stress an essential role of four factors: first, positioning and amount of yolk tissue; closely related to, second, endoderm formation during gastrulation, which initiates the process and constrains possible evolutionary changes within this area; third, incipient structure of the stomodeal primordium at the anterior neural plate border, where the ectoderm component of the prospective primary mouth is formed; and fourth, the prime role of Pitx genes for establishment and later morphogenesis of oral region both in vertebrates and non-vertebrate chordates.

Abstract
A cross-sectional national random digit dial telephone interview was conducted between September and November 2010. There were 1,015 households that had owned a dog or cat within the past five years. Of these 817 households owned dogs and 506 owned cats. Fourteen percent of dogs (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 11-16%) and 15% (95% CI: 12-18%) of cats were lost in the past five years. No owner demographic variables were associated with losing a pet. Ninety three percent (95% CI: 86-97%) of dogs and 75% (95% CI: 64-85%) of cats were recovered. For dogs, searching the neighborhood and returning on their own were the most common methods of finding the dog; 14% were found through an identification tag. For cats, returning on their own was most common. Dogs were more likely than cats to be lost more than once. Cats were less likely than dogs to have any type of identification. Knowledge of the successful methods of finding dogs and cats can provide invaluable help for owners of lost pets. Since 25% of lost cats were not found, other methods of reuniting cats and their owners are needed. Collars and ID tags or humane trapping could be valuable approaches.

Abstract
PURPOSE We evaluated the results of more than 10 years of follow-up of total hip arthroplasty using a second-generation cementless femoral prosthesis with a collar and straight distal fixation channels. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred five patients (129 hips) who underwent surgery between 1991 and 1996 for primary total hip arthroplasty using cementless straight distal fluted femoral stems were followed for more than 10 years. Ninety-four hips in 80 patients were available for clinical and radiologic analysis. The mean age at the time of surgery was 47 years, and the mean duration of follow-up was 14.3 years. RESULTS The mean Harris hip scores had improved from 58 points to 88 points at the time of the 10-year follow-up. Activity-related thigh pain was reported in nine hips (10%). At the last follow-up, 93 stems (99%) were biologically stable and one stem (1%) was revised because of loosening. No hip had distal diaphyseal osteolysis. Proximal femoral stress-shielding was reported in 86 hips (91%). We found no significant relationship between collar-calcar contact and thigh pain, stem fixation status, or stress-shielding. The cumulative survival of the femoral stem was 99% (95% confidence interval, 98-100%) after 10 years. CONCLUSION The long-term results of total hip arthroplasty using a second-generation cementless femoral prosthesis with a collar and straight distal fixation channels were satisfactory; however, the high rate of proximal stress-shielding and the minimal effect of the collar indicate the need for some changes in the stem design.

Abstract
A review of the literature was conducted to find publications relating to neck collars / rolls and prevention of sports injury, particularly burners and other cervical spine injuries, as well as in preventing excessive motion of the cervical spine. MEDLINE (1970-2005), Cinahl (1982-2005), Alt Health Watch (1990-2005), AMED (1995-2005), and the Index to Chiropractic Literature (1985-2005) databases were searched. To date there has been very little documented study into the ability of cervical collars/neck rolls to prevent excessive motion of the cervical spine or to prevent injury. Neck rolls/braces are capable of limiting cervical hyperextension under laboratory conditions, but the same can not be said for their ability to limit lateral flexion. Only one empirical study could be identified that looked at the ability of a collar to prevent burners and other neck injuries in athletes. Further laboratory and on-field studies are clearly needed.

Abstract
Hypersensitivity to serotonin (5-HT) develops in rabbit collared carotid arteries. Previous data demonstrated the involvement of 5-HT(1)-like receptors which are not active in normal carotid arteries. This study investigated the interaction in the rabbit carotid artery between 5-HT and a moderate tone as this can uncover functional 5-HT(1)-like receptors. Furthermore, the expression of messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein of 5-HT(1B), 5-HT(1D) and 5-HT(2A) receptors was addressed. Silicone collars were placed around the carotid arteries of male New Zealand White rabbits for 1 week. Rings from inside (=collar) and outside (=sham) the collar were either mounted in isolated organ baths for isometric force measurements or frozen in liquid nitrogen to isolate total RNA or proteins which were subsequently analysed by respectively reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. In sham and collared rings concentration-response curves (CRC's) to 5-HT were monophasic. Only in collared segments the presence of a 5-HT(2A) antagonist (spiperone or ketanserin, 0.1 microM) revealed a biphasic CRC which was even more pronounced when a moderate tone was induced by KCl pointing to functional 5-HT(1)-like receptors. The rabbit carotid artery constitutively expressed 5-HT(1B) and 5-HT(2A) mRNA, not 5-HT(1D) mRNA. Manipulation of the carotid artery increased the 5-HT(1B) mRNA level. Collar placement raised it even further. The 5-HT(2A) mRNA level remained unchanged. All the anti-5-HT receptor antibodies tested resulted in variable, non specific patterns with multiple bands. In conclusion, collar placement elevates mRNA expression and activity of the 5-HT(1B) receptor in the rabbit carotid artery.

Abstract
In humans intimal thickening is aprerequisite of atherosclerosis. Application of a silicone collar around the rabbit carotid artery induces an intimal thickening but in addition it increases the sensitivity to the vasoconstrictor action of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). The 5-HT receptors involved in collar-induced hypersensitivity to 5-HT were investigated using several agonists and antagonists. One week after placement of collars around both carotid arteries of anaesthetized rabbits, rings (2 mm width) from inside (=collar) and outside (=sham) the collars were mounted in organ baths (10 ml) for isometric force measurements at 6 g loading tension. Collared rings were more sensitive to the contractile effect of 5-HT (7.6 fold) and 5-carboxamidotryptamine (31 fold, 5-CT, 5-HT1 agonist) in cumulative concentration response curves. Sumatriptan (5-HT1B/1D agonist) caused concentration-dependent constrictions in collared rings only. Collar placement did not significantly alter pA2 values (Schild regression) or apparent pKb values (non-linear regression) of spiperone and methysergide (mixed 5-HT2A/5-HT1 antagonists) or ketanserin and ritanserin (5-HT2A antagonists), indicating unchanged binding characteristics of the 5-HT2A receptor. However, the reduced slope of the Schild regression pointed to a heterogeneous receptor population in collared rings. In contrast, the apparent pKb value of methiothepin (5-HT1B antagonist) was significantly reduced by collar placement, and its antagonism shifted from non-surmountable in sham rings to surmountable in collared segments. Taken together, this study demonstrates that the serotonergic receptor involved in the hypersensitivity to 5-HT of rabbit collared carotid artery is a 5-HT1B receptor subtype.
