Abstract
BACKGROUND There was an inequality in utilizing oral and dental healthcare utilization. Although people living with HIV need more oral and dental services they receive less and they have many unmet needs about their teeth health. Therefore, the present study aimed to find the factors related to unmet dental service needs (UDSN) among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) through a scoping review study. METHODS This scoping review was done based on the Arksey and O'Malley framework. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Proquest were searched for finding the relevant studies. After searching the mentioned databases, 10,431 papers were retrieved. All papers were screened and finally, 20 papers were included for synthesis. RESULTS The results showed UDSN ranged between 17-90.4% which in most studies was reported more than 50%. Reported related factors were classified into demographic, access, Health Conditions Exacerbating Dental Needs (HCEDN), health care provider, and patient status categories. The results also show that there is a high prevalence of HCEDN among PLWHA, such as untreated dental caries, dry mouth, enamel hypoplasia, and ulcers. DISCUSSION The results provide valuable information for improving access and UDSN among PLWHA. The results suggest the need for further research to explore the causal relationships between these factors and unmet need of dental service, and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions that aim to overcome the barriers and enhance the facilitators of unmet dental service need among this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize evidence of the effectiveness of school-based oral health education interventions on oral health status and oral hygiene behaviors among schoolchildren. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted across seven databases MEDLINE Ovid, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO-APA PsycInfo, ProQuest, and CINAHL, with two independent reviewers screening titles and abstracts including full texts. Data extraction procedure and quality appraisal of this umbrella review adhered to the JBI critical appraisal checklist. Systematic reviews of RCTs in which schoolchildren of 5 to 18 years of age received oral health education in a classroom-based school setting from dentists, schoolteachers, or caregivers were included. Key outcome measures included distinct oral health indices, as well as knowledge, attitudes, and practices. RESULTS A total of 27 relevant systematic reviews were included for the umbrella review. Methodological quality was substantial among most systematic reviews, thus enhancing the strength of reliability of findings. Nineteen were graded excellent (scores 30 to 33), four were classified as good quality (scores 26 to 29), four rated as fair quality (scores 21 to 25) and none rated as poor-quality (scores 20 or below). Numerous studies from various nations were identified, with reviews peaking in 2019 and 2021. The overlap assessment reveals slight degree of overlap (3.73% overlap, -0.45% CCA-corrected covered area). Meta-analyses show that oral health education interventions had a favorable impact on a number of outcomes, such as reduced plaque and gingivitis, enhanced knowledge, attitude, and behavior, and improved oral cleanliness. CONCLUSION(S) This umbrella review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the effectiveness of oral health education interventions in school settings. Positive outcomes in plaque reduction and gingivitis prevention affirm the benefits of these programs, though the evidence for caries prevention remains inconclusive. The findings highlight the broader impact of these interventions on students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches and further research to optimize oral health education. This review serves as a valuable resource for educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers dedicated to improving pediatric oral health. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023401903.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the landscape of preventive strategies and interventions directed to achieve oral health equity, with particular emphasis on the interplay between dental caries prevention, individual behaviors, and population-level strategies across various demographic and geographic regions. METHODS This scoping review was guided by Peters et al.'s framework, which incorporates four key concepts aimed at reducing caries: education for individuals and healthcare providers, behavioral modifications, addressing broader social determinants of health, and extending oral health education programs beyond traditional dental settings. A systematic search was conducted across five databases, from 2011 to 2022. RESULTS This review identified 107 studies highlighting three main themes: behavioral practices (N = 33), which focused on reducing the prevalence of caries, improving oral hygiene practices, and enhancing overall oral health knowledge; educational interventions (N = 39), which explored strategies to integrate oral health with broader public health initiatives; and dietary interventions (N = 35), which emphasized the critical relationship between diet and oral health. CONCLUSION This SR highlights the critical need for comprehensive multilevel approaches that address the complex interplay between nutrition, oral health, and sociodemographic factors, while emphasizing the critical relationship between societal factors and individual health behaviors. Multifaceted interventions that include behavioral change, education, and dietary modifications are crucial for improving oral and overall health outcomes across diverse populations. Comprehensive strategies should prioritize medical-dental integration and data-driven approaches to effectively reduce oral health disparities for vulnerable populations, promoting long-term health equity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim was to conduct a process evaluation of a multicomponent behaviour change intervention to reduce dental caries in secondary school children in the UK. The intervention was evaluated in the BRIGHT randomised controlled trial which investigated clinical and cost-effectiveness. The trial involved 4680 participants from 42 schools with a follow-up period of 2.5 years. Schools with an above-average proportion of free school meal (FSM) eligibility, an indicator of low household income, were recruited. The intervention, an oral health classroom-based session (CBS) delivered by school staff and twice-daily text messages aimed to improve toothbrushing frequency with fluoride toothpaste. METHODS Key components of process evaluations were examined: Implementation (fidelity, dose delivered, adaptations and reach), mechanisms of impact (acceptability and dose received) and influential contextual factors. Data collection ran alongside that of the outcome evaluation. Mixed-methods data collection comprised pupil self-reported questionnaires, staff feedback questionnaires, CBS and text message delivery logs and semi-structured interviews/focus groups with school staff and pupils. Quantitative data were summarised descriptively, while framework analysis was applied to the qualitative data. RESULTS The intervention was generally implemented as intended, albeit with some schools not confirming CBS delivery and a technical problem resulting in text messages being stopped prematurely. Some adaptations to the CBS were made by school staff. In terms of reach, 21.9% (n = 1025) of participants were FSM-eligible. At baseline, 77.6% (n = 3631) of randomised participants reported brushing at least twice daily with no difference over time in the social cognitive determinants of toothbrushing behaviour. The intervention was generally found to be acceptable with varying levels of participant responsiveness reported. The actual dose received was unclear; some schools did not provide a CBS attendance register, and some participants reported blocking or muting the text messages. CONCLUSIONS This evaluation raises the question of whether the intervention dose and quality of delivery were sufficient to support the required behaviour change mechanisms. Moreover, a high proportion of participants brushed twice daily at baseline; this also calls into question the intervention's ability to bring about significant change. The trial findings did not favour the implementation of the two-component intervention (CBS and text messages) within a school setting. However, with oral health as part of the general health school curriculum, the BRIGHT CBS could be adopted within the UK curriculum as it was co-developed with young people and was found acceptable to pupils and teachers. Abstract
Background Selfies have been defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, and are a continuing growing trend among Millennials and Gen Z". Narcissism refers to a personality trait of an extraordinary self-awareness and adoration. Studies have shown a close relationship between selfie-taking behavior, narcissism and oral health. Hence, a study was conducted with aim of assessing correlations between perceived health, perceived oral health, selfie-taking behavior, narcissism and oral health behavior in an adolescent population. Methods An analytical cross-sectional questionnaire study was designed using relevant literature for collating information on sociodemographic characteristics, frequency of dental visits, selfie-taking behavior and perceived oral health. Oral health examination was performed to assess decay and plaque using DMFT index and Plaque index. Narcissism was assessed using The Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory Short Form. Results The study included a sample of 163 participants. The associations between selfies taken per day and perceived oral health was statistically significant (p value 0.047*). Binary logistic regression models were constructed, which were significant for perceived oral health and grandiose fantasy. Plaque Scores showed significant corelations between indifference, manipulativeness, thrill seeking and age. Step forward binary regression demonstrated a significant odds ratio for grandiose narcissism followed by selfie-taking behavior. Conclusion This study revealed a correlation between perceived oral health and selfie-taking behaviour. Further studies are required to assess selfie-taking behaviour and oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bullying is the intentional, repeated and prolonged aggressive behavior towards victim(s) who feel powerless to defend themselves. It could influence adolescents' mental health. Some adolescents possess coping skills which enable them to overcome such adversities. The present study assessed the association between bullying, sense of coherence (SOC), resistance to peer influence (RPI) and oral health in Egyptian adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional survey that included 12-16 year old adolescents attending 6 schools in Damanhour, Egypt was conducted from March to December 2023. Data were collected through clinical examination and self-administered questionnaires. Clinical examination assessed dental caries (DMFT), oral hygiene (plaque index) and gingival condition (gingival index). Toothbrushing frequency and sugar consumption were assessed by (World Health Organization-child form), bullying (Revised Olweus Bully Victim Questionnaire), SOC (Sense of Coherence Scale-Short Form) and RPI (Resistance to Peer Influence Questionnaire). The independent variables were bullying, SOC and RPI. The dependent variables were untreated caries, gingival inflammation and toothbrushing frequency. Multivariable multilevel regression assessed the relationship between the independent and dependent variables after adjusting for potential confounders. Adjusted regression coefficients (B), adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Effect modifications by SOC and RPI were evaluated. RESULTS The response rate was 95.25% (N = 602), mean (SD) age was 14.01 (1.15). Half of the students (49.83%) were girls. About 42% had untreated caries, only 15.78% brushed their teeth twice daily and the mean (SD) gingival index was 1.57 (0.40). About 25% were victims, (9.30%) bullies and (18.60%) bully-victims. Victims showed significantly lower odds of twice daily toothbrushing (AOR = 0.52, p = 0.04). Bullies and bully-victims showed non-significantly higher odds of untreated caries (AOR = 1.42, p = 0.25), (AOR = 1.21, p = 0.42), respectively. Bullying was not associated with gingival inflammation. Higher SOC and RPI mitigated the impact of bullying on untreated caries and toothbrushing frequency. CONCLUSION Bullying was associated with higher odds of untreated caries and lower odds of twice daily toothbrushing in Egyptian adolescents. Higher SOC and RPI alleviated this relationship, highlighting the importance of individual coping strategies to oral health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The adolescent diet is high in sugars compared with other age groups. Effective approaches to support sugar reduction by adolescents are needed as part of caries prevention. OBJECTIVE To systematically review peer-reviewed evidence (1990 to 2023) to identify effective behavior change techniques (BCTs) for sugars reduction in adolescents aged 10 to 16 y. METHODS Nine databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, Dental and Oral Sciences Source, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched. Identified articles were screened independently in duplicate for eligibility. Interventions were eligible if they aimed to change adolescent dietary behavior(s) and reported pre- and postsugar-relevant outcome measures. Interventions from included studies were coded using a 93-item BCT Taxonomy (Michie Taxonomy v1). Risk of bias was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Evidence synthesis by vote counting (number of studies showing positive versus null or negative effects) was applied to BCTs that were present in more than 5 interventions. RESULTS Of 16,271 articles identified, 764 were screened in full, yielding 35 studies (in 43 papers), of which 3 were uncodeable. BCTs coded in interventions covered 11 of 16 BCT clusters and 25 of 93 individual BCTs in the BCT taxonomy. The median number of BCTs applied per study was 3 (interquartile range 2-6). Evidence synthesis indicated that the BCTs most positively associated with a positive reduction in sugars were (with the percentage of strong-/moderate-quality studies applying these techniques that successfully reduced sugars intake in brackets) feedback on behavior (100%), information on social and environmental consequences (100%), problem solving (75%), and social comparison (75%). CONCLUSION Notwithstanding limitations in available data, the current evidence most strongly supports the use of BCTs relating to feedback on behavior, providing information on the social and environmental consequences, include problem solving and making social comparisons, to lower sugars intake in adolescents. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study will enable clinicians to provide more effective dietary advice when supporting dietary behavior change to reduce sugars intake in adolescents. The results may also be used by researchers to guide future directions for research into effective sugars reduction in adolescents.

Abstract
AIM To assess the effectiveness of a school-based oral health promotion program on dental caries of permanent dentition among Iraqi children. METHODS A cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted with a parallel study group, comprising 8-10-year-old schoolchildren, 186 in each group. At the beginning of the study, subjects in the intervention group received oral health education and a single dose of 5% sodium fluoride varnish for all teeth surfaces while the control group only received oral health education. The primary outcome data in this study were caries increment and incidence after six months. The secondary outcome data was any change in oral health behaviors in the students of both groups after 3 months. The caries status was recorded according to International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). Statistical analyses included the Chi-square test, McNemar test, independent t-test, simple and multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS Study participants included 372 children with no significant difference in baseline characteristics between intervention and control groups. An increase was evident in the mean scores of DMFS, DMFT, number of children with DMFT > 0, and DS > 0 for both control and intervention groups at six-month follow-up but this increase was significantly higher for the control than intervention group (P < .001). Among all variables included in the multiple logistic regression model, just being in the intervention group showed a significant effect in which children in the control group had a 4.2-fold (95% CI: 2.36-7.54) greater chance for developing new caries than children in the intervention group. There was a statistically significant increase in the percentage of children with favourable levels of behaviors between baseline and 3-month follow-up (P < .05, P < .001). CONCLUSION Providing access to oral health services such as oral examination, fluoride varnish application, and oral health education to reduce dental caries and improve oral health practices seems to be effective among primary schoolchildren.

Abstract
Background The presence of dental caries impacts on children's daily lives, particularly among those living in deprived areas. There are successful interventions across the United Kingdom for young children based on toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste. However, evidence is lacking for oral health improvement programmes in secondary-school pupils to reduce dental caries and its sequelae. Objectives To determine the clinical and cost effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention promoting toothbrushing for preventing dental caries in secondary-school pupils. Design A multicentre, school-based, assessor-blinded, two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial with an internal pilot and embedded health economic and process evaluations. Setting Secondary schools in Scotland, England and Wales with above-average proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals. Randomisation occurred within schools (year-group level), using block randomisation stratified by school. Participants Pupils aged 11-13 years at recruitment, who have their own mobile telephone. Interventions Two-component intervention based on behaviour change theory: (1) 50-minute lesson delivered by teachers, and (2) twice-daily text messages to pupils' mobile phones about toothbrushing, compared with routine education. Main outcome measures Primary outcome: presence of at least one treated or untreated carious lesion using DICDAS4-6MFT (Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth) in any permanent tooth, measured at pupil level at 2.5 years. Secondary outcomes included: number of DICDAS4-6MFT; presence and number of DICDAS1-6MFT; plaque; bleeding; twice-daily toothbrushing; health-related quality of life (Child Health Utility 9D); and oral health-related quality of life (Caries Impacts and Experiences Questionnaire for Children). Results Four thousand six hundred and eighty pupils (intervention, n = 2262; control, n = 2418) from 42 schools were randomised. The primary analysis on 2383 pupils (50.9%; intervention 1153, 51.0%; control 1230, 50.9%) with valid data at baseline and 2.5 years found 44.6% in the intervention group and 43.0% in control had obvious decay experience in at least one permanent tooth. There was no evidence of a difference (odds ratio 1.04, 95% confidence interval 0.85 to 1.26, p = 0.72) and no statistically significant differences in secondary outcomes except for twice-daily toothbrushing at 6 months (odds ratio 1.30, 95% confidence interval 1.03 to 1.63, p = 0.03) and gingival bleeding score (borderline) at 2.5 years (geometric mean difference 0.92, 95% confidence interval 0.85 to 1.00, p = 0.05). The intervention had higher incremental mean costs (£1.02, 95% confidence interval -1.29 to 3.23) and lower incremental mean quality-adjusted life-years (-0.003, 95% confidence interval -0.009 to 0.002). The probability of the intervention being cost-effective was 7% at 2.5 years. However, in two subgroups, pilot trial schools and schools with higher proportions of pupils eligible for free school meals, there was an 84% and 60% chance of cost effectiveness, respectively, although their incremental costs and quality-adjusted life-years remained small and not statistically significant. The process evaluation revealed that the intervention was generally acceptable, although the implementation of text messages proved challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic hampered data collection. High rates of missing economic data mean findings should be interpreted with caution. Conclusions Engagement with the intervention and evidence of 6-month change in toothbrushing behaviour was positive but did not translate into a reduction of caries. Future work should include work with secondary-school pupils to develop an understanding of the determinants of oral health behaviours, including toothbrushing and sugar consumption, particularly according to free school meal eligibility. Abstract
BACKGROUND An increasing number of care-dependent older people living at home need external support to receive regular dental care. OBJECTIVES To investigate the use of oral health care services among old home care clients who participated in an intervention study focusing on oral self-care and nutrition. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study employed data from the multidisciplinary Nutrition, Oral Health and Medication (NutOrMed) intervention study with a population-based sample of 245 home care clients (74% female) aged 75 or more divided in intervention (n = 140) and two control groups (n = 105). The data were collected through interviews at baseline and 6-month follow-up. RESULTS At baseline, 43% of participants reported visits to oral health care within the previous year. At 6-month follow-up, this proportion was 51%. In the intervention group, the corresponding figures were 46% and 53%, and in the controls 39% and 48%. Adjusted regression analyses showed that this change was statistically significant (p = 0.008). In addition, higher education and toothache or other discomfort related to teeth or dentures at baseline were associated with increased use after the 6-month follow-up (OR = 1.1, 95% CI = 1.0-1.2; OR = 3.4, 95% CI = 1.5-7.9) but being edentulous indicated the opposite (OR = 0.2, 95% CI = 0.1-0.4). Belonging to the intervention group was not associated with increased use. CONCLUSIONS In older adults, any efforts to raise awareness of oral health are of great potential to increase use of services.

Abstract
In Australia, dental caries are observed in almost half of children starting school. Oral health promotion programs are being implemented in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings to promote oral health. This study examined children's perceptions of one such program, the Bright Smiles Bright Futures (BSBF) program in ECEC settings in New South Wales, Australia. Data were collected using focus group discussions from 15 children aged 3-5 years, transcribed verbatim, and analysed through inductive thematic analysis. Three themes were identified as follows: (i) oral health knowledge of children, (ii) oral hygiene practices routine and skills development, and (iii) evaluation of the oral health promotion kit and opportunities for improvement. Children's perspectives highlight the BSBF program's success in communicating key messages to promote oral health. The integration of family-centric approaches, acknowledgement of children's preferences, and the use of interactive tools collectively enhance the overall effectiveness of the oral health promotion program.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review to examine and summarize the characteristics of research related to mental health (MH) screenings and/or referrals to treatment in dental practices. METHODS We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for Scoping Reviews and searched multiple databases for terms connected with dental care, MH concerns, screening, and referral. Included articles: (1) described care provided in a dental practice, (2) described a situation where the patient is experiencing the potential MH problem, (3) did not involve dental anxiety exclusively, and (4) involved some form of MH screening and/or referral to treatment. Article analysis included a summary of key study characteristics, types of evidence, study design, and central concepts and definitions. RESULTS The search generated 2050 records, with 26 ultimately included. Most studies involved only adults (22, 85%), but only three (12%) reported on rurality (two urban; one mixed) and only two each (8%) reported race or ethnicity. Fifteen (58%) articles were prospective and 11 (42%) were retrospective. The studies varied widely in study designs, from 11 (42%) cross-sectional methodologies to only one (4%) randomized controlled trial. Thirty-four screening tools were used to screen for symptoms of 43 MH conditions, with depression and anxiety screened for most frequently. Few articles discussed making referrals, practice workflows, or follow-up outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Included studies provide evidence of viable options for dental practitioners regarding MH screening, referring, and conducting follow-up, but lack specificity regarding these processes. Overall, more research is needed to clarify what workflows are most efficient for dental practitioners and efficacious in identifying patients with MH concerns.

Abstract
Introduction Maintaining well-being is crucial, especially in challenging conditions, considering the common public health issue of dental caries. Within the context of adolescent oral health, this research explores the techniques employed by dental professionals to potentially foster hope -a positive manner that promotes well-being- in adolescents during consultations, opening a window into the realm of patient engagement and well-being. Materials and methods Data were collected through observations conducted at public dental clinics in Norway, with the participation of three dental professionals and four adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 years. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Practices were observed from dental professionals in their interactions with adolescents, which align with features of hope. Result Three core themes were identified: (1) bonding strategies; (2) verbal and non-verbal strategies for creating positive relationships; and (3) adolescents' empowerment in dental consultations. Conclusion Although a new concept within oral health promotion, it seems that dental professionals in this study were observed to be facilitating hope in adolescents when they were providing their dental care. Consideration should be given to the potential for future approaches to be developed for use in dental consultations to facilitate hope strategically. While these approaches are likely to contribute to improving patient-centredness, consideration is needed of challenges and barriers to their implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of oral health education programs on the oral health of primary school students. METHODS In this randomized controlled trial study, 190 elementary fifth-grade female students were chosen using the multistage cluster sampling method. In this study, the Plaque Index (PI), Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), Community Periodontal Index (CPI), tooth brushing using fluoride toothpaste, dental flossing frequency and factors affecting them were determined according to social cognitive theory (SCT). Interventions were implemented using the play method and with the help of three pamphlets, five posters, a celebration of oral health, and the creation of a Telegram group. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics indexes, t tests, paired sample t tests, chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation tests. RESULTS The results showed that 3 months after the intervention, compared to before the intervention, the percentage of participants in the intervention group who brushed their teeth twice or more per day increased by 48.5%, and the percentage of participants who used dental floss at least once per day increased by 64.2%. The rate of gum bleeding decreased by 6.3%. The good OHI-S rate increased by 44.4%. Dental plaque decreased by 38.1%. CONCLUSION The results demonstrated that a gamification design can be effective and useful in promoting the oral health of students. Abstract
Background Unless a health intervention is acceptable to target audience and aligns with their needs and preferences, there is increased likelihood that they would not engage with and benefit from it as planned. Despite that, there is paucity of studies exploring acceptability of oral health promotion interventions prior to implementation. This cross-sectional study was designed to investigate Egyptian women's "prospective acceptability" to use mobile technologies in promoting access to oral health services. Methods A total of 959 participants completed a questionnaire, based on Sekhon's theoretical framework of acceptability, either in-person or virtually. Data was collected on sociodemographics, smartphones' ownership and usage patterns, acceptability to use mHealth interventions, and any potential motivators and barriers. Chi-square test was used for descriptive statistics and regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of acceptability to use digital technology in improving oral and dental health. Results 83 % of women residing in urban settings versus 80.7% in rural settings believed that mHealth could improve health outcomes. WhatsApp was identified by 68% of participants as the preferred application for adopting mobile health services. Health awareness (36.8%) and effort & time saving (29%) were the most commonly cited motivators for using mHealth while lack of time (33%) and privacy issues (14.2%) were the main barriers. Conclusions mHealth is perceived as a highly acceptable approach for promoting oral health among Egyptian women. However, mHealth interventions should take into consideration privacy concerns and personal security when targeting this group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescents living in rural areas are more likely to have poorer oral health compared with their metropolitan counterparts. Co-design is emerging as an effective method for developing health promotion programs that meets the needs of stakeholders; however, little evidence exists to inform successful co-designed oral health promotion programs for rural adolescents. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to understand the value of a co-designed oral health promotion program undertaken with rural adolescents in northeast Victoria with objectives to: Co-design an oral health promotion program with rural adolescents. Evaluate the program for appropriateness, acceptability, and feasibility. Make recommendations for program refinement and scalability. DESIGN Study participants included year 11 and 12 students in a rural secondary school in Northern Victoria (n=2), who collaboratively along with schoolteachers, and the local health service staff led by an oral health therapist, co-designed, and delivered an oral gealth promotion program in their schools. This qualitative study used semi-structured group interviews (n = 8) to evaluate the co-design process and impact. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed using a co-design evaluation toolkit as a framework for analysis. FINDINGS Qualitative inductive analysis revealed three main thematic categories around participant benefits (intended and unintended learning outcomes; interpersonal skills), the quality of the process (value of co-design, qualities of facilitators, and engagement); and scalability and replicability. CONCLUSION The study indicates that co-design was both acceptable and appropriate for designing an oral health promotion program for rural adolescents delivering unexpected benefits. Building the capacity of schoolteachers could offer sustainable and cost-effective solutions for scalability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral health is a significant part of general health. Poor oral health can influence an individual's appearance, self-esteem, eating, and speaking. The use of mobile phone apps has been growing in the field of medicine, including dentistry. However, to date, there is no evidence related to the availability of mobile apps focusing on various branches of dentistry. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature on the use of patient-oriented mobile phone apps in oral health and summarize the key findings. METHODS A scoping review of published scientific literature on the use of patient-oriented mobile phone apps in oral health was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute. A search was performed in PubMed and Scopus for studies published between January 2000 and June 2021 that were written in English. All study types except for those reporting developmental protocols were included in this review. In total, 2 reviewers independently screened the studies using the eligibility criteria. The study protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework registries in June 2021. RESULTS The initial search yielded a total of 977 studies, 45 (4.6%) of which met the inclusion criteria. All the studies (45/45, 100%) were published after 2009. Most studies (31/45, 69%) concerned oral health promotion using mobile phone apps, followed by behavior management (5/45, 11%). More than half (23/45, 51%) of the included studies were conducted in Asian countries. Overall, 31% (14/45) of the studies focused on adolescents. A total of 51% (23/45) of the studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Approximately 39% (9/23) of the included RCT studies reported a substantial reduction in dental plaque, and 26% (6/23) of the studies reported significant improvement in gingival health. Regarding dental anxiety management, 13% (3/23) of the RCT studies reported a significant decrease in mean heart rate and lower Facial Image Scale scores. CONCLUSIONS According to the literature, the use of mobile apps in oral health is increasing among patients, mainly children and adolescents. Many studies that have used mobile apps have focused on promoting oral health. However, other areas such as diagnostic and remote consultations (teledentistry) have until recently been neglected despite their great potential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coordinated Oral health Promotion (CO-OP) Chicago is a cluster randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of a community health worker (CHW) intervention to improve tooth brushing in low-income children. METHODS Four hundred twenty children under 3 years old (mean 21.5 months) were recruited from 20 sites in or near Chicago, IL. Children were identified mainly as Black race (41.9%) or Hispanic ethnicity (53.8%) and most (85.2%) had Medicaid. Intervention families were offered four CHW home visits over 1 year. Brushing frequency was self-reported. Plaque score was determined from images collected in homes using disclosing solution. Analyses used GEE logistic models with variable selection at p < .05. RESULTS At enrolment, 45.0% of families reported twice a day or more child brushing frequency, and child plaque scores were poor (mean of 1.9, SD: 0.6). Data were obtained from 87.1% of children at 6 months and 86.2% at 12 months. In the CHW intervention arm (10 sites, N = 211), 23.7% received 4 visits, 12.8% 3 visits, 21.3% 2 visits, 23.2% 1 visit and 19% no visits from CHWs. No intervention effect was seen for brushing frequency or plaque score. Child brushing frequency improvement over time was associated with a range of child and caregiver factors. The only factor associated with a change in plaque score over time was parent involvement in brushing. CONCLUSIONS Oral-health-specific CHW services were not associated with improved brushing behaviours in these young children. However, caregiver involvement with brushing supported more quality brushing. More robust interventions are needed to support families during this critical developmental period.

Abstract
Oral health is an indicator of patients' overall quality of life. Poor oral health among adolescents with asthma can affect their health in adulthood. This study researched the association between asthma and oral health symptoms in South Korean adolescents. Data from the 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey were used. A total of 44,940 students participated in this study. The dependent variables were self-reported oral health symptoms. Asthma was the primary independent variable based on diagnosis in the past 12 months. The chi-squared test and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used. Students with asthma were associated with oral health symptoms, compared with those without asthma (boys, odds ratio (OR): 1.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-1.66; girls, OR: 1.94, 95% CI = 1.40-2.69). Poor health habits, such as low physical activity, higher sweetened beverage consumption, and fewer sleeping hours, were associated with oral health symptoms. Students who did not receive asthma treatment also had higher oral health symptoms (boys, OR: 1.29, 95% CI = 1.13-1.48, girls, OR: 1.34, 95% CI = 1.15-1.57). Students with absence due to asthma had a higher risk of oral health than those without asthma (boys, OR: 1.31, 95% CI = 1.17-1.46, girls OR: 1.28, 95% CI = 1.12-1.46). Students with asthma had a high risk of poor oral health among South Korean adolescents, suggesting more attention be given to regular dental check-ups and maintaining oral hygiene.

Abstract
Background Due to some unique physical, social and psychological features in the adolescent population, adolescents can be a time of heightened caries activity and periodontal disease. Oral health-related behaviors can be modified to improve oral health status. The family networks and the built environment can promote or inhibit health behaviors. The aim of this study is to implement and evaluate a behavior theory-based, integrated family intervention via mobile messaging to improve oral health of adolescents. Methods This is a three-arm parallel-design cluster-randomized controlled trial. This trial will allocate 12 local secondary schools (clusters) in Hong Kong to three test or comparison groups with a ratio 1:1:1. The enrolled Form II to IV students (ages 12 to 15) will be eligible for participation. The intervention to three study groups will be (i) Health Belief Model (HBM)-based mobile messaging to the adolescents and their parents, which will consist of several blocks of HBM-based messages and reinforcement during 24 weeks; (ii) same HBM-based messaging to adolescents only; and (iii) delivering e-version of oral health education pamphlets to adolescents. The primary outcome will be caries increment 2 years post-intervention. Changes in oral health self-efficacy and behaviors, oral hygiene, and gingival status will be the secondary outcomes. Discussion No school dental care service is available to secondary school students in Hong Kong. This study will be the first to test a theory-driven and family-engaged preventive intervention among adolescents in Hong Kong. Findings will contribute to developing a low-cost, feasible, and efficient oral health preventive program for adolescents. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.govNCT05448664. Registered on 7 July 2022.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral health condition in adolescence impacts the oral well-being throughout life. This study aimed to determine the association between environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure and oral health in adolescents, using nationally representative data. METHODS Using data from the 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, we assessed self-reported data on ETS exposure and oral health symptoms in 37,591 non-smoking adolescents. The dependent variables were self-reported oral health symptoms of adolescents (tooth fracture, dental pain, and gum bleeding). ETS exposure was the primary independent variable. Chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to examine these relationships. RESULTS ETS exposure was positively associated with oral symptoms compared to no-ETS exposure in adolescents [boys, odds ratio (OR) 1.56, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.46-1.66; girls, OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.41-1.60]; individuals with good oral health habits such as frequent tooth brushing [boys, three times or more a day, OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.24-1.53] and less soda consumption [girls, less than once a day, OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.29-2.33] had a weaker association. ETS exposure was positively associated with dental pain [boys, OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.45-1.66; girls, OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.41-1.60] and gum bleeding [boys, OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.29-1.58; girls, OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.21-1.44]; however, tooth fracture was significantly associated only in girls [OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.13-1.45]. CONCLUSIONS ETS in various environments is negatively associated with oral health in adolescents. This association could vary depending on health habits. Sophisticated policies to protect South Korean adolescents from ETS can be developed from these findings.

Abstract
Background The Brushing RemInder 4 Good oral HealTh (BRIGHT) trial is investigating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a multi-component behaviour change intervention to reduce the prevalence of dental caries in young people from deprived areas aged 11–13 years. Mobile health has gained popularity in delivering behaviour change interventions for improving oral health. The intervention, based on behaviour change theory, consists of two components; a single classroom-based session embedded in the school curriculum and a series of follow-up text messages (SMS) delivered twice daily to participants. This element of the process evaluation aimed to explore the acceptability of the BRIGHT intervention for pupils and school staff. Methods Qualitative study, based on the concept of acceptability. Focus groups were conducted with 50 pupils, from six secondary schools across the UK, who had received the intervention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 members of staff. Purposive maximum variation sampling was used. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a framework approach. Results In line with the theoretical framework of acceptability, affective attitude, perceived effectiveness, ethicality, burden and self-efficacy were identified as factors that affect the acceptability of the BRIGHT intervention. Pupil participants appreciated learning about the consequences of inadequate brushing particularly the photographs of carious teeth during the classroom-based session. More detailed information on brushing techniques and follow-up lessons on oral health were recommended by pupils. In terms of the SMS, the data suggest that pupil participants found them to be helpful reminders for brushing their teeth. To further improve acceptability, more choice over the timing of the messages and greater interactivity to reduce tedium were suggested. Staff participants recognised the value of the lesson and reported that in general the content was suitable for their pupils. Having the lesson material prepared for them, having the necessary support and whether it was included in the curriculum, were factors that improved acceptability. Conclusion Overall, pupils and staff found the BRIGHT intervention acceptable and made some suggestions which could be adopted in any subsequent implementation of the intervention. Abstract
Objectives
Dental caries is the most common preventable childhood condition. Non-dental professionals and health workers are often well placed to support parents in adopting positive oral health behaviours for their children. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of behaviour change interventions and their individual component behaviour change techniques (BCTs), that were delivered by non-dental professionals and health workers.
Methods
A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, TRoPHI and PROQUEST from inception until March 2021 was conducted. Randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies for improving oral health outcomes in children were included. Quality assessment was carried out using Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and ROBINS-I tool. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger’s regression intercept. Effect sizes were estimated as standardised mean difference (SMD) and odds ratio/risk ratio for proportions. Meta-analyses were performed for studies reporting mean decayed, missing, filled surfaces (dmfs) and mean decayed, missing, filled, teeth (dmft) indices. Behaviour change technique coding was performed using behaviour change technique taxonomy v1 (BCTTv1).
Results
Out of the 9,101 records retrieved, 36 studies were included with 28 showing a significant effect either in clinical and/or behavioural/knowledge outcomes. Most studies (n = 21) were of poor methodological quality. The pooled SMD for caries experience showed statistically significant result for caries prevention at surface level -0.15 (95% CI -0.25, -0.04) and at the tooth level -0.24 (95% CI -0.42, -0.07). In 28 effective interventions, 27 individual BCTs were identified and the most frequently used were: “Instructions on how to perform the behaviour” and “Information about health consequences”.
Conclusion
There is low quality of evidence suggesting non-dental professionals and health workers may help improve oral health outcomes for children. To confirm these findings, further high-quality studies incorporating a variety of BCTs in their interventions for adoption of good oral health behaviours are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries in adolescents remains a significant public health problem with few oral health promotion interventions aimed at reducing dental caries in secondary school-aged students. Previous oral health and mobile health (mHealth) research has suggested the need for the development of a school-based behaviour change intervention incorporating a digital component. This study aimed to describe the development process of a behaviour change intervention to improve the oral health of students aged 11-16 years attending secondary schools in the UK. METHODS A six-step process was used to develop the complex intervention informed by behaviour change theory and involving students, young people, parents and teachers in the process. The steps were: (1) identifying the target behaviours, namely tooth brushing with a fluoride toothpaste (2) identifying the theoretical basis and developing the causal model (3) reviewing the relevant literature and developing the logic model (4) designing the intervention with young people, parents and school staff (5) specifying the intervention content and (6) translating this content into features of the intervention and piloting. RESULTS The resultant intervention included a quality-assured classroom-based session (CBS) (guided by a lesson plan and teaching resources), delivered by school teachers which was embedded within the school curriculum. This CBS was followed by a series of (Short Message Service) SMS texts delivered twice daily to student's mobile telephones with the content, duration and timing of the messages informed by involvement of students and young people. CONCLUSIONS An intervention to improve the oral health of secondary school students through improved tooth brushing was rigorously developed based on behaviour change theory and work with young people, parents and school staff. Further research is needed to evaluate the outcomes and processes involved following the delivery of this intervention. BRIGHT Trial Trial Registration ISRCTN12139369.

Abstract
Background In Turkey, dental caries is a disease which still has been considering as a real public health problem. School children of lower socioeconomic status had greater caries experience and higher caries severity in both primary and permanent dentitions. Aims To determine the frequency of dental caries and its related factors among boarding school children. Patients and Methods Cross-sectional study. We examined 1307 boarding school children aged 7-14 for caries status and its related factors. Data on dental health and its related factors were obtained from the archive of Ege Oral Health and Dentistry Association. Comparisons of caries severity (as decayed/missing/filled primary teeth, dmft/decayed/missing/filled permanent teeth, DMFT and significant caries index,) and examination years were made. Caries trend were also identified. Correlations between caries severity and its related factors were also performed. SPSS 20.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results DMFT and SiC for DMFT of all children were 2.35 and 5.04, respectively. 70-year-old had the highest dmft, whereas 14-year-olds had the highest DMFT. No correlation was found between decreased dmft and tooth brushing frequency, regular dental check-ups, and oral hygiene status. There was a weak correlation between decreased DMFT and increased number of dental visits in 2008 and 2009. In children received more than one examination and/or treatment (n = 269), the SiC index for dmft was 10.52 in 2002. In 2004, the index decreased to 3.57. The SiC for DMFT was 4.09 in 2002 and 2004. No correlation was identified between decreased dmft and DMFT and tooth brushing frequency, regular dental check-ups, and oral hygiene status both for the years of 2002 and 2004. The mean dmft of 32 children had prophylaxis for dental caries in 2002 was significantly decreased in 2004. Conclusion Caries prevalence and severity of boarding school children were high even they were followed-up regularly.

Abstract
The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the acceptability of an oral health-related mobile application developed for young children based on the feedback given by the children and their parents. Another aim was to evaluate the self-reported change in children’s oral health behaviors during a short test period. The application—a virtual pet integrated into a child’s daily routines—aimed to promote oral hygiene and dietary behaviors in children. A total of 36 4–12-year-old voluntary children were given a mobile phone with the installed application. After the 5-week testing period, the feasibility of the application and possible changes in the children’s oral health behaviors were asked using an electronic questionnaire. Most of the children considered the application clear (n = 34), amusing (n = 31), and useful (n = 29). The children’s tooth brushing manners improved both qualitatively and quantitatively: the time used for tooth brushing increased and the children learned how to brush different tooth surfaces. Mobile applications can be fun and useful in oral health promotion; while playing, children can learn good oral health-related behaviors. Mobile applications integrate oral health promotion into children’s daily environment and routines.
