Publication trends of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry (JERD) stands out as one of the most prominent international journals publishing research in esthetic dentistry. This study analyzed articles published by JERD since the year 2000 through bibliometric analysis.

METHODOLOGY

The search was conducted in January 2024 using Scopus. The following data were extracted from the articles: citation count, year, language, access type, funding agency, study design, theme (general and specific), country, institution, authors, and keywords. The VOSviewer software was used to generate collaborative network maps among the data. Dimensions were consulted to measure altmetric data. Google Trends was used to investigate the global popularity of JERD research.

RESULTS

A total of 1394 articles were included in this analysis. Citation count ranged from 0 to 625 (average: 16.9). Articles were published between 2000 and 2023. Laboratory studies were more prevalent (n = 850), with the most investigated general theme being restorative procedures (n = 882), and the highlighted specific theme being the use of composite resin (n = 327). The United States had the highest number of articles (n = 640), with the diverse distribution among other countries. The most common keyword was "cad/cam" (n = 63). VOSviewer demonstrated high collaboration among countries. Intense mentions were identified primarily on Facebook. According to Google Trends, Egypt was the country that searched for JERD the most.

CONCLUSIONS

JERD exhibited significant growth in the number of published articles and their diversity by topics, types, origin (country), number of citations, and impact factor.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The JERD is a journal that publishes studies influencing clinical practice. Identifying the key characteristics of this journal is essential for charting future paths.

Exploring vital pulp Therapies: A bibliometric analysis of the most cited articles

Aim

The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the most cited articles on vital pulp therapies.

Methodology

Bibliographical data related to the abstract, citations, keywords, and other relevant information was extracted using different combinations of keywords. Further evaluation and visualization of the selected data were performed with the help of various tools, including MS Excel, Microsoft Word, Google open refine, BibExcel, and VOS viewer. An initial search revealed 91 documents, of which 40 were chosen for further analysis. We used the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Spearman correlation coefficient test, and our adopted significance level was p < 0.05.

Results

In total, the articles received 1,905 citations, with six of them receiving at least 100 citations. Among the top 40 articles, the United States of America (10 articles) and Ireland (6 articles) were the countries with the highest number of cited articles. The journals "Journal of Endodontics" (14 articles; 650 citations) and "International Endodontic Journal" (13 articles; 577 citations) published most of the articles among the 50 most cited ones. Duncan H. was the author with the highest number of works cited (11 articles; 339 citations). Of the articles, systematic reviews accounted for 32%, literature reviews for 14%, in vitro experimental studies for 12%, clinical trials for 8%. Among the biomaterials used in vital pulp therapies, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was discussed in 37 articles (74%), followed by calcium hydroxide, mentioned in 30 studies (60%). Interestingly, the publication year did not demonstrate a significant impact on citation count.

Conclusion

The present study provided a detailed list of the top 50 most cited and classic articles on vital pulp therapies. This will help researchers, students, and clinicians in the field of endodontics with an impressive source of information.

Bibliometric analysis and visualization of top papers in dentistry from 2012 to 2022 based on essential science indicators

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to analyze and visualize the top dental papers from 2012 to 2022 using data from essential science indicators (ESIs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present study was conducted using library and retrospective bibliometric analysis methods. Additionally, a science map has been created. Web of Science was searched on January 18, 2023. The results were limited to the top papers in ESIs. The bibliometric information of the top papers was evaluated. Next, the VOSviewer was used to perform a co-occurrence analysis and visualize data.

RESULTS

The findings showed that Mariano Belén Sanz and Maurizio S. Tonetti were the top two authors. The University of London and the University of Bern had the highest number of articles. These articles were published in 55 journals. According to the analysis of keyword co-occurrence, the most frequently used keywords in the field of dentistry include "periodontitis," "dental implants," "periodontal disease," "mechanical properties," "peri-implantitis," "oral health," "dental caries," "dental materials," "3D printing."

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study enable readers to pinpoint the authors, organizations, countries, and journals that have made the biggest contributions to the list of the most often cited dentistry papers. In medicine, bibliometric citation analysis is frequently used to assist researchers in learning the fundamentals of a subject and pinpoint subtopics of broad interest for additional study.

A scoping review about LGBTQIAP+ people in oral health research

Oral health personnel must acknowledge the health needs of sexual and gender minorities. They should consult scientific literature to deepen their knowledge about sexuality, gender identity, general and oral health status, and treatment disparities among LGBTQIA+ people. The aim of this scoping review was to portray the development and current stage of internationally indexed literature approaching the oral health of this population. In this study, the search strategy used consisted of combinations of subject descriptors (MeSH terms), in two concept blocks: LGBTQIAP+ people and oral health. Global literature was searched through Medline (PUBMED), Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and Scopus electronic databases, with no language or date restrictions. Records were selected and evaluated by two independent reviewers, under the supervision of three senior reviewers and the inclusion criteria resulted in 189 eligible papers. Since the first study was published in 1974, numbers increased over the decades, reaching 67 (35.4%) in 2010-2019. The most frequently studied populations were North American (42.9%) and European (19.0%) and the most frequent language of publication was English (99.0%). There were 38 open access papers (20.1%). Medical (57.7%) and dental journals (20.1%) predominated. Cross-sectional studies were found more frequently (65.1%), followed by the cohort type (11.1%). Oral manifestation of STI (58.7%) was the topic most frequently addressed. The search for literature approaching the oral health of LGBTQIAP+ people showed evidence of the need to encourage research reported in papers made easily available, with more robust scientific evidence, and on a broader scope of topics, including oral health needs and treatment, and planning of oral health services.

The Top 100 Most-Cited Articles on Permanent Teeth Avulsion: A Bibliometric Analysis

INTRODUCTION

Knowledge of bibliometric indices on the avulsion of permanent teeth can help researchers to identify gaps in the literature. The aim of this study was to analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the 100 most-cited articles on the avulsion of permanent teeth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two researchers conducted an unfiltered search in the Core Collection section of the Web of Science (WoS-CC) database. The following data were extracted: position in the citation list, total number and density of citations, title, authors, institution, country, year of publication, journal, keywords, study design, tooth storage medium, and other topics of interest. Bibliometric networks were generated and analyzed using the VOSviewer software. Descriptive analysis and a Poisson regression analysis were performed (P < .05).

RESULTS

The number of citations per article varied between 31 and 407. The average was 70.05, and 13 articles received more than 100 citations. J.O. Andreasen (n = 13) and M. Trope (n = 15) were the authors who contributed most often to publications. The United States was the country with the highest number of articles (n = 31). Authors associated with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (n = 9) and University of North Carolina, USA (n = 10) showed higher productivity. In vitro/animal model studies were the most frequent study designs (n = 50), and the most-discussed topic of interest was prognosis (n = 47). There was strong clustering among 13 research groups.

CONCLUSION

Observational studies, published by authors from Europe and about prognosis or treatment presented more citation ratio in WoS-CC. Clinical studies on permanent tooth avulsion are needed to increase the quality of scientific evidence and provide insights for health professionals and public policy makers.

Bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited articles on bone grafting in dentistry

AIM

This bibliometric study analyzed the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles on bone grafts in dentistry.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A database search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection using a specific search strategy. Scopus and Google Scholar were also consulted for citation comparisons. Data extracted included: title, citation metrics, publication year, journal, study design, graft material, surgical technique, authors, institution, and country. Bibliometric networks were generated using VOSviewer.

RESULTS

The identified articles were published between 1991 and 2019. Citation counts ranged from 120 to 1161 (mean: 240, 30). Clinical Oral Implants Research was the most cited journal (5175 citations; 25/100). Xenogeneic bone graft material was the most frequently used (5130 citations; 22/100). Europe had 62 articles (14,604 citations), and the United States was the most prominent country (5209 citations; 22/100). The University of Bern had the highest number of citations (2565 citations; 13/100), with Buser D as the author with the largest number of articles (2648 citations; 12/100).

CONCLUSION

This study shows the scientific progress on bone grafts in dentistry. The use of xenogeneic grafts for horizontal and/or vertical ridge augmentation was the most prominent trend.

Leadership through a gender lens: Disparities in Dental Research

This study aimed to analyze the 100 most-cited papers in Dentistry, with a focus on female leadership in dental research. Papers were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS- CC) in the category 'Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine'. Gender was assessed through WoS-CC, Scopus, ResearchGate, social media, institutional websites, and software that assigns gender according to first names (https://genderapi.io). Characteristics of authors in leadership roles were retrieved, such as affiliation, publication history, citations, H factor, and i500. The 100 most-cited papers in Dentistry were authored by 394 researchers, 326 (82.7%) men, and 68 (17.3%) women - there were 4.8 male authors for each female. Among the lead authors, there were 11.3 males for each female. Among female senior authors, there were 7 males for each female. Among lead/senior authors of the 100 most-cited papers (first and last authors, respectively), 18 were women. There was an increase in the participation of women in the top cited papers regardless of authorship role across the six decades, with a peak of two female authors in the first decade of the 21st century. For female authors in leadership roles, their publication history shows the time between their first and last papers in WoS-CC ranged from 4 to 42 years for lead authors and 1 to 39 years for senior authors. Women were found to be largely underrepresented as leaders of the 100 most-cited papers, highlighting pervasive gender inequalities in dental research publications.

A bibliometric and visualization analysis of the aerosol research on the Himalayan glaciers

This research focuses on a bibliometric analysis of research on aerosols' impact on the glaciers in the Himalayan glacier region published in journals from all subject categories based on the Science Citation Index Expanded, collected from the Web of Science and Scopus database between January 2002 and April 2022. The indexing phrases like "aerosol," "glacier," and "snow" are commonly used terms and have been utilized to collect the related publications for this investigation. The document selections were based on years of publication, authorship, the scientific output of authors, distribution of publication by country, categories of the subjects, and names of journals in which scholarly papers were published. The number of articles on aerosols accelerating the melting of glaciers shows a notable increase in recent years, along with more glacier melting results from countries involved in climate science research. People's Republic of China (382) was the country with the highest publication output on aerosols impacting the melting of glaciers. The USA (367) was the most cited country, with about 17,500 total citations and 80.40 average citations per year from January 2002 to April 2022. The results reveal that research trends in the glaciers on aerosols' impact on the glaciers have been attractive in recent years, and the number of articles in this field keeps increasing fast. This study offers opportunities to track research trends, identify collaboration prospects, and inform climate policy. Integrating data sources and engaging the public will further enhance the impact and relevance of this critical research field.

Orthodontic Wires: A 12-Year Bibliometric Study

Aims and Objectives

To perform a bibliometric study to identify and evaluate articles associated with "orthodontic wires" indexed in six databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, Lilacs, and Google Scholar) from 2010 to 2022.

Materials and Methods

The search strategy in PubMed combined different medical subject heading terms with free-text words and was adjusted for each selected database. The retrieved documents were original English articles containing the keywords used in the search strategies related to orthodontic wires. Collected data consisted of journal name, nationality, field, JIF-2 and JIF-5, SJR, CiteScore, Q and H-index, and categorization of the study.

Results

In total, 417 articles were retrieved from the initial search. After the exclusion criteria, 257 articles remained. The most common theme was mechanical properties, with basic studies as the main categorization.

Conclusions

This bibliometric survey provides an overview of orthodontic wires publications that might help orthodontists to understand the tendency of the studies on this subject. The retrieved papers were published in 100 journals, including 15 orthodontic journals, mainly in the first and second quartiles. Europe and America were the continents with the highest number of papers. The United States was the country with the highest number of journals on the topic. AJODO presented the highest h-index among the retrieved orthodontic journals. Brazil represented the principal institutions of origin of the listed articles. There was a tendency to increase the number of publications on orthodontic wires over the years. These findings indicate that research on orthodontic wires is still contemporary and relevant.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Top 100 Most-Cited Papers Concerning Dental Fluorosis

A high number of citations can indicate the potential of any specific paper to influence other research and generate changes in clinical practice. Analyzing the most-cited papers in a certain scientific field may assist researchers to identify the influential papers as well their main characteristics. The present study aimed to analyze the 100 most-cited papers concerning dental fluorosis (DF) through a bibliometric review. A search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database in November 2021. The papers were displayed in descending order according to the number of citations in WoS-CC. Two independent researchers performed the selection. Scopus and Google Scholar were used to compare the number of citations with WoS-CC. The following data were extracted from the papers: title, authors, number and density of citations, institution, country, continent, year of publication, journal title, keywords, study design, and theme. Collaborative networks were generated using the VOSviewer software. The top 100 most-cited papers were published between 1974 and 2014 and were cited 6,717 times (ranging from 35 to 417). Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (24%), Journal of Dental Research (21%), Journal of Public Health Dentistry (17%), and Caries Research (13%) published the most papers. Observational studies (60%) and literature reviews (19%) were the most common study designs. The main topics were epidemiology (44%) and fluoride intake (32%). The countries with the highest number of papers were the USA (44%), Canada (10%), and Brazil (9%). The University of Iowa (USA) had the most papers (12%). Levy SM was the author with the highest number of papers (12%). The 100 most-cited papers on DF were mainly observational studies focused on epidemiology and originated in North America. There were few interventional studies and systematic reviews among the most-cited papers concerning this topic.

Tooth auto-transplantation: A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles

BACKGROUND/AIM

Tooth auto-transplantation has recently gained high clinical acceptance. The aim of this study was to identify the top 100 most-cited articles regarding tooth auto-transplantation, to analyse multiple citations and publication metrics and to outline the historical scientific advancements in this field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An advanced search of the Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science 'Core Collection' and Elsevier's Scopus databases utilising specific keywords related to tooth auto-transplantation between 1971 and 2021 was performed. The retrieved articles were ranked in descending order based on their Web of Science citation counts and further cross-matched with citation data from Scopus. The extracted data included citation counts, citation density, level of evidence, year of publication, contributing authors names and institutes, corresponding author's address, journal of publication, journal local citations index, cumulative growth index, keywords and keywords Plus. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and graphical mapping.

RESULTS

A total of 1290 articles were retrieved. The top 100 most-cited articles received a total of 4899 (Web of Science) and 5250 (Scopus) citations. Among these, cohort studies (29%) and case series (18%) were the most common study designs. Scandinavian countries produced major contributions in defining the top 100 most-cited articles and ranked within the top 5 countries based on the number of publications and citations per year. The greatest contributing authors were Schwartz O (n = 12), Andreasen JO (n = 8) and Paulsen HU (n = 6), and they were affiliated with Copenhagen, Denmark. The top contributing journals were American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology, European Journal of Orthodontics, Dental Traumatology and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis revealed a large geographical scientific interest and broad development in the field of tooth auto-transplantation spanning multiple dental disciplines.

Role of mineral trioxide aggregate in dentistry: A bibliometric analysis using Scopus database

OBJECTIVES

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has a long history of providing predictable clinical outcomes in dental applications especially in endodontic procedures. This bibliometric analysis aimed at evaluating the advancements of research in mineral trioxide aggregate and its use in the field of dentistry, together with the detection of most significant authors, organizations, countries, journals, papers, and the exploration of commonly used keywords using a structured approach.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

The search was conducted using the Elsevier's Scopus database, gathering publication information related to MTA published from 1993 and 2021 July. Metadata comprising of titles, abstracts, keywords, authors, organizations, and countries were obtained. Bibliometric evaluators with respect to authors, articles published, journals, keywords, and top countries were scrutinized. Data was analyzed using VOS viewer.

RESULTS

Between 1993 and 2021, an uptrend in the research performed on MTA was identified. Researchers from United States, Brazil, and Iran actively contributed on MTA, while papers from USA were highly cited. The Journal of Endodontics along with International Endodontic Journal were the top contributing academic journals. Hacettepe University, Turkey and Cardiff University from United Kingdom were the top most contributing organizations. Mahmoud Torabinejad was the most cited author. Most commonly used keywords included Mineral trioxide aggregate, silicate, oxide, root canal filling material.

CONCLUSION

The global rise in the number of publications on mineral trioxide aggregate, tremendous networking and citations have been identified amongst various organizations, authors, and nations through this bibliometric analysis.

A Bibliometric Mapping Study of the Literature on Oral Health-related Quality of Life

BACKGROUND

Oral health is an indispensable component of overall health, and oral health status significantly influences people's physical, mental, and social well-being. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), an important and widely used dental patient-reported outcome (dPRO), is attracting more and more researchers' attention and interest. This study aimed to analyze and map the existing scientific literature regarding OHRQoL through a bibliometric approach, including a summary of the characteristics of OHRQoL-related publications, the identification of prolific entities, high-frequency keywords analysis, and research trend analysis via periodic high-impact keywords.

METHODS

A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection to collect OHRQoL-related original research and review articles. After examination and deduplication, the following bibliometric information was extracted from each article: title, abstract, keywords, authors, affiliations, geographic origin (countries/regions), year of publication, journal name, and references. Various scientometric mapping tools including Microsoft Office spreadsheet, VOSviewer, Biblioshiny R-package software, and Scimago Graphica were used to analyze basic bibliometric parameters, leading producers, high-impact keywords, and research trends.

RESULTS

A total of 3324 OHRQoL-related articles (3119 original research articles and 205 review papers) were collected, which received 65,704 citations. A total of 9950 authors from 2429 organizations contributed to this body of research. Prolific authors from Europe, USA, Brazil, New Zealand, China, and Canada were identified, and they also centered collaboration clusters in the co-author network. Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology was the most prolific journal. Twenty-one keywords with more than 200 occurrences, and 23 keywords with more than 150 occurrences, were identified for publications of 1994-2021 and 2012-2021, respectively. Keyword analysis revealed hot topics such as instrument development and validation, studies targeting children and adolescents, as well as clinical studies in operative dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, and community dentistry. Oral Health Impact Profile is the most commonly used instrument in OHRQoL-related research.

CONCLUSIONS

OHRQoL is an impactful topic in dental health care as it is not only useful in dental research and patient-centered clinical outcome measures but also provides valuable guidance in dental public health administration and policy making. OHRQoL-related research presents a dynamic landscape and is expected to continue presenting high productivity and broad application in the future.

Effects of Photobiomodulation on Oral Mucositis: Visualization and Analysis of Knowledge

This review article mapped and analyzed the most cited articles on the association of photobiomodulation (PBM) with oral mucositis (OM) and the evolution of clinical protocols in the area. A comprehensive search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database, leading to the extraction of information such as title, authors, abstract, journal name, number, average of citations, study design, year of publication, institutions, continents, countries, type of laser used, irradiated anatomical points, primary anti-cancer therapy, and laser parameters. Among those, clinical trials and literature reviews were the most common study designs. The main type of laser used was the InGaAlP diode, with a wavelength ranging from 630-660 nm, power going in 40-100 mW, and energy density ranging from 0.375-22 J/cm². As for the anatomical sites irradiated by PBM, the cheek mucosa, upper and lower lips, lateral tongue, and bottom of the mouth stood out. This analysis highlights an increasing interest in PBM as a supportive treatment in cases of OM, as well as the evolution of the technique, types of laser devices, and protocols used.

Profile of brazilian research productivity grant holders with a background in pediatric dentistry

This study outlines the profile of research productivity grant holders of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico [CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development)] in the field of pediatric dentistry. A cross-sectional study with data collected from the Brazilian academic curriculum vitae database. The eligibility criterion was being a research productivity grant holder in pediatric dentistry from 2018 to 2020. In the period of interest, 215 individuals were research productivity grant holders in the field of dentistry, 33 of whom had graduate degrees (specialization, master's or doctorate) in pediatric dentistry. The period of scientific production and work concluded of advising of scientific initiation, master, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees was 2010 to 2020. Descriptive analysis was performed and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze associations (5% significance level) between productivity grant level (2, 1D, 1C, 1B or 1A) and year of obtainment of the doctoral degree. The VOSviewer (version 1.6.17) was used to present graphically the interinstitutional collaborations. The sample was composed of Level 2 researchers (66.7%), women (66.7%), researchers linked to institutions in the southeastern region of Brazil (81.8%), with a doctoral degree concluded prior to 2002 (51.5%), began working as a professor at a higher education institution prior to 2007 (78.8%) and the title of full professor (45.5%). No significant association was found between productivity grant level and year of conclusion of the doctoral degree (p = 0.10). Median (interquartile range) of scientific articles was 119 (37-312). The prevalence of citations (57.52%) and JCR articles (62.76%) was higher among female researchers. In conclusion, CNPq research productivity grant holders in pediatric dentistry are essentially represented by females from the southeast region of the country (UFMG and USP). However, males have proportionally greater productivity.

A bibliometric and subject analysis of 3300 most‐cited articles in dentistry

Objectives

This study aims to analyze the publications that have studied top‐cited articles in dentistry.

Material and Methods

The study is applied research in terms of the purpose and scientometrics descriptive in terms of type, which has been done using the Retrospective Bibliometric Analysis. To retrieve the 100 most‐cited studies in Scopus, an advance search was used. The search results indicate that 33 articles focused on analyzing the 100 most‐cited publications on oral and dental subjects. The bibliographic information, including author, journal, country, institution, citation count, and citation density was analyzed. Then the full text of the articles was reviewed to identify the most productive journal, country, and institute in publishing the 100 most‐cited articles and also article type, study design, level of evidence, and the most important subjects among the 100 most‐cited papers.

Results

In these 33 articles, the topics of 3300 most‐cited articles were introduced, as well as the introduction of the core journals, countries, and institutes in publishing top‐cited articles. The most common research topics in the field of dentistry cover a range of dental public health and pediatric dentistry to adhesive restorative dentistry and implantology. Dental materials, oral medicine, and pathology seem like inseparable topics of common research in dentistry. J Dent Res, which was mentioned in nine articles, was introduced as the journal with the publication of articles of highest citation. J Clin Periodontol and Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology were in the second place, being mentioned in five articles. The USA, and two institutions the University of Texas, and the University of Michigan are orderly core country and institute for the production of most‐cited articles.

Conclusion

Researchers and specialists can get familiar with the most productive author, journals, countries, and different institutes for publishing high‐quality articles in the field of oral and dental subjects by the means of the results of this article. Furthermore, the results of this study ranked the most cited article topics, which are of interest for publication, demonstrating the future map road oral and dental research.

Research Hotspots and Trends of Peripheral Nerve Injuries Based on Web of Science From 2017 to 2021: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is very common in clinical practice, which often reduces the quality of life of patients and imposes a serious medical burden on society. However, to date, there have been no bibliometric analyses of the PNI field from 2017 to 2021. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research and frontier trends in the field of PNI research from a bibliometric perspective.

Methods

Articles and reviews on PNI from 2017 to 2021 were extracted from the Web of Science database. An online bibliometric platform, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software were used to generate viewable views and perform co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, and burst analysis. The quantitative indicators such as the number of publications, citation frequency, h-index, and impact factor of journals were analyzed by using the functions of “Create Citation Report” and “Journal Citation Reports” in Web of Science Database and Excel software.

Results

A total of 4,993 papers was identified. The number of annual publications in the field remained high, with an average of more than 998 publications per year. The number of citations increased year by year, with a high number of 22,272 citations in 2021. The United States and China had significant influence in the field. Johns Hopkins University, USA had a leading position in this field. JESSEN KR and JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE were the most influential authors and journals in the field, respectively. Meanwhile, we found that hot topics in the field of PNI focused on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and satellite glial cells (SGCs) for neuropathic pain relief and on combining tissue engineering techniques and controlling the repair Schwann cell phenotype to promote nerve regeneration, which are not only the focus of research now but is also forecast to be of continued focus in the future.

Conclusion

This is the first study to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications related to PNI from 2017 to 2021, whose bibliometric results can provide a reliable source for researchers to quickly understand key information in this field and identify potential research frontiers and hot directions.

A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles on keratoconus

PURPOSE

To explore the characteristics of the top 100 most-cited articles on keratoconus research.

METHODS

The Web of Science database was searched to identify papers published from 1950 to 2020. A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles was conducted in the current study. The Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted to test the citation differences between basic research, clinical research, and reviews. The Spearman correlation analysis was used to investigate the association between citations and publication year. The VOSviewer software was used to create networks of co-authorship and keywords map.

RESULTS

The median values of the number of citations, citations/year since publication, and citations since 2013 were 186.5, 13.90, and 11, respectively. A total of 79% of articles were clinical research. Reviews exhibited a higher value of citations/year since publication and citations since 2013 than basic research (all P < 0.05). The number of publications, total number of citations, citations/year since publication and citations since 2013 on the top 100 most-cited articles list increased with an increase in the publication year in three article types (all P < 0.05). The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery had the highest number of articles. There were 37 articles from the USA. Rabinowitz, YS was the most-cited author with the greatest total link strength. Extensive collaboration existed among the main core nodes containing "cross-linking," "refractive surgery," and "penetrating keratoplasty."

CONCLUSIONS

The present study focused on the comprehensive analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles on keratoconus research, providing insight into keratoconus research developments over the past decades.

The 100 most-cited papers in dentistry for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders: Bibliometric profile of scientific research

AIM

To conduct a bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited papers in dentistry for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A search strategy was constructed and conducted at the Web of Science in the category of "Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine". The following information was extracted from each paper: title, authorship, year of publication, title of the journal, study subject, study design, age range of sample participants, type of disability, institution, country and continent, number of citations and citation density. Google Scholar and Scopus were used to crosscheck the number of citations of the most-cited papers. The VOSviewer software was used to generate bibliometric network maps. The papers received 4453 citations in Web of Science, ranging from 30 to 106 citations. Most papers were published by the USA (35%), had an observational design (78%) and the main subject was epidemiology (31%). Most studies focused on individuals with Down syndrome (34%) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (18%) and were published in the Journal of Periodontology (10%) and the Pediatric Dentistry Journal (7%).

CONCLUSION

Most of the studies included in this review were characterized as epidemiological studies. Future research should focus on behavior guidance, dental education, and access to dental services.

Research trends in the field of ambient air quality monitoring and management in South Africa: A bibliometric review

Air pollution is a leading environmental-health challenge facing the world today. Besides, the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic has also put some spotlight on issues related to air pollution as both attack the same human respiratory organs. The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of research performance, trends and evolution in the field of ambient air quality monitoring and management in South Africa over the last decade (2010-2021) through the application of a bibliometric approach and a data mining software VOSViewer. Findings were that there has been a steady increase in the number of ambient air quality monitoring and management publications per year. Over the period under review, 2014 contributed 14 % while 2020 contributed 27 % of the total publications. Also, the study established that throughout the period South African scientist collaborated extensively with scientists from Finland, the United States of America, France, and Switzerland. Besides raising awareness levels in the field, the increase in studies can also assist policy formulation and development. In the meantime, the South African National government has also put in place several mitigation strategies to reduce emissions for example the enactment of ambient air quality guidelines.

A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series in Endodontic journals

AIM

To identify the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series published in Endodontic journals and to analyse their bibliometric characteristics.

METHODOLOGY

The Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and PubMed databases were used to identify the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series in Endodontic journals. Complete bibliographic records of the selected case reports and case series were exported in plain text or BibTeX format and imported into the R environment for statistical computing and graphics. The following parameters were then analysed: names and affiliations of the authors, title, year of publication, journal of publication, first author, corresponding author, literature cited within reports, language, citation counts, impact factor of the journal, keywords, Keywords Plus and research topic.

RESULTS

In total, 88 case reports and 12 case series published in English between 1977 and 2016 were identified as the most-cited reports in the field of Endodontics. The terms "case report(s)" or "case series" were not included in the title of 57 articles. The number of authors per report ranged from one to seven, with the average number of co-authors per report being 3.14. The most-cited author was M Trope (University of Pennsylvania, USA). The University of Washington and Private Practice, Cetraro, Italy, were the most productive institutions. The country whose case reports received the largest total number of citations was the United States. The largest number of the most-cited reports appeared in 2002, 2004 and 2007 (n = 7, respectively). According to the WoS database, the total number of citations ranged from 42 to 453, with the average number of citations per report being 79.97. The majority of the top 100 most-cited articles were published in the Journal of Endodontics and the International Endodontic Journal. The most frequently used author keywords were revascularization and mineral trioxide aggregate. The majority of the case reports and case series dealt with topics related to pulp regeneration.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive overview on the progress, trends and current directions in clinical practice within the field of Endodontics.

Global Trends in Cosmetics Use-Related Adverse Effects: A Bibliometric Analysis of Literature Published during 1957–2021

Cosmetic and beauty products, though not essential for physical health, go a long way in providing mental well-being and confidence, and hence are used substantially. Increasing utilization of varying cosmetic products leads to a multitude of adverse effects. There is more awareness about cosmeceutics, cosmetic products and their adverse effects, and studies on the same are currently trending. Bibliometrics has become a prominent and growing field of research in recent years. The aim of this research was to assess bibliometric features and conduct systematic trend analysis on the literature available on cosmetics’ adverse effects. We analyzed all the published documents that included the keywords “cosmetics” and “adverse effects” between 1957 and 2021. We performed a detailed scientometric and bibliometric assessment in this field. A total of 4127 articles were retrieved from the databases provided by Scopus, which most were original articles. The United States ranked first and dominated the literature with 1292 (31.44%) documents followed by South Korea 7.47%. Harvard medical school was the most productive institution (1.16%). The study of the adverse effects of cosmetics should be supported and taken up by the researchers/authors from developing and underdeveloped countries.

Top 100 most-cited oral health-related quality of life papers: Bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study assessed the features of the 100 most-cited papers on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).

METHODS

The 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers were collected from Web of Science, adopting a combined keyword search strategy. Google Scholar and Scopus databases were searched to compare citations. The following data were extracted from papers: title of the paper, number of citations, authorship, country, year of publication, title of the journal, study design, sample size, topic and OHRQoL instruments used. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

The number of citations of the top 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers ranged from 73 to 949. Fifty-six papers received at least 100 citations and two received more than 400 citations. Most papers were from Canada (23%) and had been published in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (37%). David Locker was the most-cited author (25 papers; 3,521 citations). The cross-sectional study design was the most common (68%). The impact of oral health conditions on OHRQoL (43%) was the most frequent topic, and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) was the most commonly used OHRQoL instrument (48%).

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric analysis highlighted the characteristics of the 100 most-cited OHRQoL papers, demonstrating that this field is far from saturated. This list of the most-cited articles can provide a reference point to guide oral health research, education and services.

The top 100 most-cited papers authored by Dr. Jens Ove Andreasen: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND/AIM

Dr. Jens Ove Andreasen, the "father" of dental traumatology, passed away on September 26, 2020. As a tribute, the aim of this study was to catalog and analyze the top 100 most-cited papers (co)authored by Dr. Andreasen.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A bibliometric analysis was conducted on October 21, 2020, in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database. The numbers of citations in the WoS "All Databases" section, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were cross-matched. Two researchers collected the following bibliometric data: title, number of citations, authors, country, year, journals, study design, and theme. The VOSviewer software was used to generate collaborative network maps for the authors and keywords.

RESULTS

Of 194 papers identified in WoS-CC, a list was compiled with the 100 most-cited papers (co)authored by Dr. Andreasen. The number of citations of each paper ranged from 24 to 365 (mean: 85.4). Nine papers were cited more than 200 times. Most papers were published in Dental Traumatology (55%), between the 1990's and 2000's (60%), with a laboratory design (40%). One hundred and nine (co)authors, from 19 countries were identified in the top 100 most-cited papers. Dental traumatology was the most studied theme (52%).

CONCLUSIONS

The top 100 most-cited papers (co)authored by Dr. Jens Ove Andreasen were composed mainly of laboratory and observational studies, published mostly in Dental Traumatology. The present study was a humble homage to highlight the importance of his research and work. However, his legacy goes beyond the numbers and will always remain unsurpassed.

The Top 100 Most Cited Articles Published in Dentistry: 2020 Update

This bibliometric review is aimed to analyze the top 100 most-cited publications in dentistry and to compare its outcomes. A literature search was performed using Elsevier's Scopus, without any restriction of language, publication year, or study design. Of 336,381 articles, the top 100 were included based on their citation count, which ranged from 638 to 4728 citations (Feijoo et al., 326 to 2050). The most productive decade was the 2000s, with 40 articles on the list (Feijoo et al., 1980s: 26). Marx RE (7%) was the major contributor in this study (Feijoo et al., Socransky SS: 9%), and almost half (48%) of articles were from the USA. Of the top 100 articles, 26% focused on periodontology (Feijoo et al., periodontology: 43%), while 17% of the total were published in the Journal of Dental Research (Feijoo et al., Journal of Clinical Periodontology: 20%). Most of the publications were narrative reviews/expert opinion (36%), (Feijoo et al., case series: 22%), and were within the evidence level V (64%) (Feijoo et al., 54%). The citation count that a paper secures is not necessarily a reflection of research's quality, however, the current analysis provides the latest citation trends in dentistry.
