Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study answers the PECO question: "In adults with dental implants (P), do subjects suffering from type-2 diabetes or prediabetes (E) have worse peri-implant conditions (O) than subjects without type-2 diabetes and prediabetes (C)?". Prediabetes (5.7-6.4 % HbA1c), and the different qualities of glycemic control in type-2 diabetes; well-controlled (>8 % HbA1c), and poorly controlled (>8 % HbA1c) individuals; were classified according to the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association. DATA Predefined search keys were used with search terms including: Dental implant, diabetes mellitus, glycemic control and HbA1c. SOURCES An electronic search in the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane libraries were conducted without any filters or language restrictions. Additionally, manual search of the reference lists were carried out to identify all relevant articles. STUDY SELECTION Eligibility criteria were cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies that answerd our PECO question with at least 1 year of follow-up. From a total of 2660 records, 35 articles (1761 individuals) were included in the analysis. Meta-analytic difference in means for crestal bone loss was 1.2 mm [95 % CI=0.4; 2.1] in patients with prediabetes, 1.8 mm [CI=1.0; 2.7] in poorly controlled patients, whereas 0.4 mm [CI=-0.3; 1.1] in well-controlled individuals. Meta-regression showed that 1 % increase in HbA1c increased crestal bone loss by 0.24 mm. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the study, patients with poorly controlled type-2 diabetes or prediabetes may have worse peri-implant conditions compared to patients without diabetes and well-controlled type-2 diabetes. Well-controlled type-2 diabetes is not a risk indicator for peri-implant diseases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians should measure blood HbA1c levels when planning implant-supported restorations, thus patients with undiagnosed or poorly controlled type-2 diabetes can be identified, that allows for glycemic level adjustment prior to dental implant surgery, ensuring peri-implant health. Abstract
Together with diabetic osteoporosis (DOP), diabetes patients experience poor peri-implant osteogenesis following implantation for dentition defects. Zoledronate (ZOL) is widely used to treat osteoporosis clinically. To evaluate the mechanism of ZOL for the treatment of DOP, experiments with DOP rats and high glucose-grown MC3T3-E1 cells were used. The DOP rats treated with ZOL and/or ZOL implants underwent a 4-week implant-healing interval, and then microcomputed tomography, biomechanical testing, and immunohistochemical staining were performed to elucidate the mechanism. In addition, MC3T3-E1 cells were maintained in an osteogenic medium with or without ZOL to confirm the mechanism. The cell migration, cellular actin content, and osteogenic differentiation were evaluated by a cell activity assay, a cell migration assay, as well as alkaline phosphatase, alizarin red S, and immunofluorescence staining. The mRNA and protein expression of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), phosphorylated AMPK (p-AMPK), osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), and collagen type I (Col-I) were detected using real-time quantitative PCRs and western blot assays, respectively. In the DOP rats, ZOL markedly improved osteogenesis, enhanced bone strength and increased the expression of AMPK, p-AMPK, and Col-I in peri-implant bones. The in vitro findings showed that ZOL reversed the high glucose-induced inhibition of osteogenesis via the AMPK signaling pathway. In conclusion, the ability of ZOL to promote osteogenesis in DOP by targeting AMPK signaling suggests that therapy with ZOL, particularly simultaneous local and systemic administration, may be a unique approach for future implant repair in diabetes patients.

Abstract
It could conceivably be hypothesized that a link exists between an altered microbiota due to local hyperglycemia and the increased risk of caries in diabetes mellitus (DM). This systematic review aimed to perform a cross-study comparison into the salivary microbiota of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) compared to adults without T2D, particularly focusing on the abundance of acid-associated bacteria. This report follows PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Studies using next-generation sequencing and other molecular techniques are included. The methodological quality of individual studies was assessed using appropriate Joanna Briggs Institute tools. The certainty of the evidence considering the effect direction was evaluated using the GRADE approach. From 2060 titles retrieved, 12 were included in the data synthesis, totalling 873 individuals with T2D and controls evaluated across the literature. Weighted averages of blood glucose levels (HbA1c—fasting blood glucose) were 8.21%—172.14 mg/dL and 5.12%—84.53 mg/dL for T2D and controls, respectively. In most studies, the relative abundance of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria was higher in diabetics when compared to their normoglycaemic controls. Whilst the evidence certainty was very low, there was a consistent Proteobacteria depletion and Firmicutes enrichment in T2D. As for the acid-associated genera, there was consistent enrichment of Lactobacillus and Veillonela for T2D. Tannerella/T. forsythia was enriched in T2D saliva, but the certainty is low. Further well-designed cohorts are needed to clarify the distribution of acid-associated microorganisms in the saliva of adults with T2D and how this can be clinically manifested (PROSPERO = CRD42021264350).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This randomized clinical trial assessed changes in protein biomarker levels and bacterial profiles after surgical reconstructive therapy of peri-implantitis and investigated whether the adjunctive use of Er:YAG laser impacts protein biomarker and microbial outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-four patients received surgical reconstructive therapy for peri-implantitis with guided bone regeneration following mechanical debridement with (test) or without (control) the adjunctive irradiation of Er:YAG laser. Bacterial and peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) samples were collected over 6 months and analyzed with bacterial qPCR and luminex multiplex assays. RESULTS Surgical reconstructive treatment significantly affected the concentration of PICF protein biomarkers, including a 50% reduction in IL-1β between 2 and 4 weeks (p < .0001). Both MMP-9 (p < .001) and VEGF (p < .05) levels steadily decreased after treatment. In the laser group, the peak increase in IL-1β was attenuated at 2 weeks, followed by significant reduction in MMP-9 (p < .01) and VEGF (p < .05) across all follow-up appointments compared with the control nonlaser group. The total bacterial load was reduced 2 weeks after treatment, especially in the laser group, but recolonized to presurgical levels after 4 weeks in both groups (p < .01). The composition of selective pathogens varied significantly over the follow-up, but recolonization patterns did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS Reconstructive therapy of peri-implantitis significantly altered PICF protein biomarker and microbial levels during the healing process. The adjunctive use of Er:YAG laser significantly modulated the inflammatory response through reduced levels of MMP-9 and VEGF during the postsurgical period. The bacterial load was reduced immediately after therapy, but recolonization was observed by 4 weeks in both groups.

Abstract
Personalized Oral Healthcare has recently become the new trend word in medicine and dentistry. In this context, saliva diagnostics using various biomarkers seem to be the gateway to personalized dental diagnostics and therapy. But the terminology is not (yet) uniformly defined, furthermore it is unclear to what extent which salivary markers play a relevant role in the therapeutic decision making. In this Scoping Review, an electronic search was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science databases using medical subject headings (MESH terms) “saliva”, “biomarker”, “personality/persons”, and “dentistry”. Only human studies were included, in which repeated salivary measurements were performed to analyze monitoring effects with at least ten patients per group. PRISMA-ScR and Tricco guidelines were followed: (i) to examine what salivary biomarkers have been explored in terms of personalized oral healthcare and precision dentistry, (ii) to investigate the clinical relevance for oral health and its correlation to systemic health, and (iii) to summarize an outlook for future developments based on these results. Out of 899 studies, a total of 57 were included for data extraction in this Scoping Review, mainly focusing on periodontal therapy and patient monitoring. Salivary biomarkers have shown the potential to change the field of dentistry in all dental disciplines as a key for personalized workflows. The increasing interest in dental research is obvious, demonstrated by the growing number of publications in recent years. At this time, however, the predominant discipline is periodontology, which allows biomarker-based monitoring of the disease prevention and progression. The studies included showed heterogeneous methods using manifolds biomarkers. Therefore, no uniformly accepted concept can be presented today. Further clinical research with well-defined outcomes including standardized procedures is necessary.

Changes in salivary biomarkers associated with periodontitis and diabetic neuropathy in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Sci Rep 2022; 12:11284. Abstract
The objective of this pilot clinical study was to identify salivary biomarkers that are associated with periodontal disease and measures of diabetic autonomic dysfunction. Saliva samples from 32 participants were obtained from 3 groups: healthy (H), type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), and type 1 diabetes mellitus with neuropathy (DMN). Based on the periodontal examination, individuals’ mean Periodontal Screening and Recording scores were categorized into two groups (periodontally healthy and gingivitis), and correlated to specific salivary inflammatory biomarkers assessed by a customized protein array and enzyme assay. The mean salivary IgA level in DM was 9211.5 ± 4776.4 pg/ml, which was significantly lower than H (17,182.2 ± 8899.3 pg/ml). IgA in DMN with healthy periodontium was significantly lower (5905.5 ± 3124.8 pg/ml) compared to H, although IgA levels in DMN patients with gingivitis (16,894. 6 ± 7084.3) were not. According to the result of a logistic regression model, IgA and periodontal condition were the indicators of the binary response given by H versus DM, and H versus DMN, respectively. These data suggest that selected salivary biomarkers, such as IgA, combined with a periodontal examination prior to obtaining salivary samples can offer a non-invasive method to assess risk for developing diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract
Background and objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) refers to a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired secretion or action of insulin. The high levels of glucose in the blood can negatively affect the healing processes through alterations in vascularization, bone remodeling, and with increased susceptibility to infections. Diabetes mellitus is therefore a risk factor not only for many systemic diseases, but also for localized problems such as peri-implantitis. The objective of this systematic review was to identify a clear relationship between peri-implant inflammation indices and glycemic levels, through the investigation of prospective studies that report data on a short-term follow-up period. Our hypothesis was that peri-implant inflammatory indices may already present themselves in a statistically significant way as altered in patients with DM compared to patients without DM. Materials and methods: This review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Results: More than 992 records were identified in the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial electronic databases and only seven studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis report worse outcomes in patients with DM, even in the short period of six months, for peri-implatitis inflammation indices, such as Marginal bone loss (standardized (Std). mean difference (MD) 12\6 months 0.81 [0.45, 1.17]\1.82 [0.53, 3.10]), Bleeding on probing (Std. MD 12\6 months 2.84 [1.34, 4.34]\3.44 [1.41, 5.50]), Probing depth (Std. MD 12\6 months 1.14 [0.60, 1.68]\2.24 [0.66, 3.83]), and the plaque index (Std. MD 12 months 2.83 [0.09, 5.57]). Conclusion: The literature linking glycaemic control to peri-implant disease is highly heterogeneous due to lack of consistency of the definition of peri-implantitis and its clinical indicators among studies. Therefore, interpretation of finding and relevance to clinical practice should be considered on individual bases. In the era of personalized medicine, the clinician should utilize individualized information from translational researches and analyze all risk factors to provide the patient with evidence-based treatment options.

Abstract
AdipoRon is an oral active synthetic small molecule with biological functions similar to adiponectin (APN). It is an APN receptor agonist that can improve insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. However, the role of AdipoRon in bone metabolism and related molecular mechanisms remains to be investigated. To explore the effect of AdipoRon on bone absorption and bone integration of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice with implants, we established surgery-induced model of osseointegration of dental implantation in T2DM mice of C57BL/6 db/db and normal mice homologous to diabetic mice. Micro-CT was used to analyze the femurs with the implant in the mice to detect the bone mass, H&E, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), and Safranin O-fast green staining was performed to analyze the bone formation and bone resorption. Bone integration-related markers as Rankl, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), osteoprotegerin (OPG), osteopontin (OPN), and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) were also measured using immunohistochemistry. Our results indicated that diabetic mice showed a lower bone mass and decreased the osteoblast differentiation. AdipoRon attenuated diabetes-impaired bone volume (BV)/total volume (TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), and bone integration-related markers variation and promoted bone hyperplasia as well as repressed the osteoclast formation, especially in diabetic mice. AdipoRon may improve the osseointegration of dental implants in mice with T2DM by promoting osteogenesis and inhibiting bone resorption, and AdipoRon may serve as a promising oral strategy to improve the osseointegration ability of patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Saliva has the potential to be used as a diagnostic and monitoring tool for various diseases if biomarkers of an adequate sensitivity and specificity could be identified. Several reviews and even meta-analyses have been performed in recent years, which have found some candidate biomarkers for periodontitis, like macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha, interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, matrix metalloproteinase-8, or hemoglobin. However, none of those are currently in use to replace conventional periodontal diagnostics with a periodontal probe. For periimplantitis, to date, heterogeneity of different study protocols and implant types did not permit to discover clear biomarkers, which were able to distinguish between healthy and diseased implants. Few proinflammatory cytokines, similar to periodontitis, have been characterized as adjunct tools to clinical diagnosis. The additional determination of antimicrobial peptides, bone turnover markers, and bacteria could help to enhance sensitivity and specificity in a combined model for periodontitis and periimplantitis. Furthermore, proteomic approaches might be preferred over single biomarker determinations. A global consensus is also needed to harmonize salivary sampling methods as well as procedures of biomarker analysis to ensure future comparability.

Abstract
Background This 6-months randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the efficacy of indocyanine green mediated photodynamic therapy (ICG-PDT) as an adjunct to peri‑implant manual debridement (PIMD) versus PIMD alone among Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients in the treatment of peri‑implantitis. Methods A total of 48 DM patients having 64 implants were treated with either ICG-PDT + PIMD (n = 35 implants) or PIMD alone (n = 29 implants). Clinical (probing depth [PD], bleeding on probing [BOP], and plaque index [PI]) and radiographic (peri‑implant crestal bone loss [PCBL]) peri‑implant variables were recorded. Bacterial species including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola were evaluated from peri‑implant plaque biofilms. Levels of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 were assessed after the collection of peri‑implant sulcular fluid. All the evaluations were carried out at baseline, 3- and 6-months. The significance level was set to p < 0.05. Results All clinical parameters significantly reduced within both treatment groups (P<0.05). Intra-group comparison indicates that there was statistically significant reduction in PD and suppuration for ICG-PDT group (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the BOP between ICG-PDT and PIMD groups at both follow-up periods (P<0.001). However, there was a significant difference for PD (P = 0.001), suppuration (P = 0.01), and PCBL (P = 0.04) on 6 months follow-up between ICG-PDT and PIMD groups, respectively. Only ICG-PDT showed a significant reduction in P. gingivalis and T. denticola on both 3 months and 6 months follow-up compared to baseline. PIMD showed a statistically significant reduction only on 3 months follow-up compared to baseline. This reduction was maintained for both the species when dental implants were treated with ICG-PDT. However, PIMD failed to maintain this reduction until 6 months. Only at 3 months assessment that both treatment groups showed statistically significant reduction in IL-1β and IL-6 with no significant difference between the groups. Both biomarkers failed to maintain the reduction in both groups and significantly increased levels for IL-1β was noted at 6 months follow up Conclusion Multiple application of indocyanine-green mediated photodynamic therapy resulted in improved clinical and microbial parameters among type 2 DM subjects in the treatment of peri‑implantitis. This clinical trial was registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration and Results System with registration record number: NCT04833569.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To comprehensively evaluate implant survival, clinical and biochemical parameters, as well as possible dose-response relationship with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in patients with differing diabetic control. METHODOLOGY Five electronic databases were searched for studies that compared implant outcomes in patients with differing HbA1c values. Research quality was evaluated using Risk of Bias in Nonrandomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool. Narrative synthesis and meta-analysis were performed for survival rate, plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth, and marginal bone loss (MBL). Categorical dose-response meta-analysis (DRMA) was conducted according to length of follow-up. RESULTS Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Prospective studies were mostly of moderate quality, but non-prospective papers had serious to critical risk of bias. Survival rate was high for the first 3 years (92.6%-100%) for patients with HbA1c less than 8%. Meta-analysis revealed worsening clinical parameters with increasing HbA1c. DRMA further established a significant dose-response relationship between glycemic control with BOP (10% more bleeding, 95% CI 0.05-0.16, P = .008) and MBL (0.05 mm more bone loss, 95% CI 0.01-0.09, P = .002) per HbA1c category, but no association with probing pocket depth. Osseointegration progressed at a slower rate, and inflammatory cytokines and bone biomarkers were adversely affected in patients with HbA1c above 8%. CONCLUSION Moderate evidence suggests a high short-term survival but possible dose-response trend of worsening BOP and MBL in association with glycemic control. Clinically, HbA1c values must be considered for risk assessment before placement and throughout the lifespan of the implant placed in a patient with diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the possible association between diabetes mellitus and dental implant complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic literature review was conducted to answer the following PICO (Participants, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome) question: Is there association between diabetes mellitus and dental implant complications? Two independent searchers performed a literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and EMBASE databases for studies published until February 2020, focussing on studies including continuous outcomes, marginal bone loss (primary outcome), probing depth, and bleeding upon probing (secondary outcomes). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS A final total of 10 published studies were included in this systematic review. There were statistically significant differences between the groups with regard to marginal bone loss (p < .00001), probing depth (p < .00001) and bleeding around dental implants (p < .00001), and subjects without diabetes had lower complication rates. Additionally, in the subgroup analysis performed with loading time and HbA1c levels, a more evident association was found in immediate loading for probing depth. Moreover, the analysis results of bleeding around dental implants suggested that as HbA1c level increases, the bleeding of the tissues surrounding the implant will also increase. With regard to dental implant complications, there were statistically significant differences favouring patients without diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Literature has reported that up to 50% of dental implants may be affected by peri-implantitis, a bacteria-induced chronic inflammatory process, which promotes osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and inhibits bone formation, leading to progressive bone loss around implants. Current evidence points toward an increased risk for the development of peri-implantitis in both obesity/metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) conditions relative to the healthy population. Currently, there is no effective treatment for peri-implantitis and the 50% prevalence in MetS and DM, along with its predicted increase in the worldwide population, presents a major concern in implant dentistry as hyperglycemic conditions are associated with bone-healing impairment; this may be through dysfunction of osteocalcin-induced glucose metabolism. The MetS/DM proinflammatory systemic condition and altered immune/microbiome response affect both catabolic and anabolic events of bone-healing that include increased osteoclastogenesis and compromised osteoblast activity, which could be explained by the dysfunction of insulin receptor that led to activation of signals related with osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, chronic hyperglycemia along with associated micro- and macro-vascular ailments leads to delayed/impaired wound healing due to activation of pathways that are particularly important in initiating events linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis; this may be through deactivation of AKT/PKB protein, which possesses a pivotal role in drive survival and eNOS signaling. This review presents an overview of the local and systemic mechanisms synergistically affecting bone-healing impairment in MetS/DM individuals, as well as a rationale for hierarchical animal model selection, in an effort to characterize peri-implantitis disease and treatment.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present systematic literature review was to evaluate bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD), and marginal bone loss (MBL) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) control patients. METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, and ScienceDirect. The search included prospective human clinical studies that analyzed the success of dental implants in T2DM control patients. For inclusion, studies should have had a minimum of 1-year follow up and should have assessed the following parameters: MBL, BOP and PD. Prior to meta-analysis, all of the studies were assessed for quality, bias, and heterogeneity. RESULTS Risk of bias analysis indicated that all studies were of moderate quality. After a full-text evaluation, only seven studies met the inclusion criteria for this meta-analysis, with a combined total of 443 patients and 530 dental implants. The meta-analysis indicated a statistically significant difference between parameters of implants placed in the glycemic-controlled group and healthy group in MBL (P < .001), BOP (P < .04), and PD (P < .001). CONCLUSION The results of the present study indicated that, despite being glycemic controlled, patients with T2DM were associated with a higher risk of peri-implant disease.

BACKGROUND Studies assessing peri-implant clinical and marginal bone resorption (MBR) around narrow diameter implants (NDIs) placed in different glycemic levels are uninvestigated. OBJECTIVE The present 3-year retrospective follow-up investigation was designed to explore clinical and radiographic status of NDIs placed in individuals with different glycemic control levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels ≥6.5% (Group-1), 5.7%-6.4% (Group-2), and 4.0%-5.0% (Group-3) were included. Clinical indices evaluating bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque scores (PI), peri-implant probing depth (PD), and MBR were recorded around NDIs at 1-, 2-, and 3-year follow-up. Serum HbA1c test was carried out for all patients to assess the profile of glycosylated hemoglobin at 1 and 3 years of follow-up. RESULTS A significant reduction in mean HbA1c levels from year 1 to year 3 follow-up period was seen in Group-1 only. PI varied from 0.40 in Group 1 at 2 year and 0.42 at 3-year follow-up to 0.18 at 2-year (P = 0.032) and 0.17 at 3-year (P = 0.018) follow-up, respectively. Greater BOP was noted in Group 1 (0.53) as compared with Group 2 (0.42) and Group 3 (0.21) (P = 0.048) at 3-year follow-up. PD after 3 year ranged from 2.04 mm in Group 3 to 2.32 mm in Group 1 that showed statistically significant difference (P = 0.037). No statistical significant differences were observed in MBR at any time point between the groups. CONCLUSION The results of this short-term follow-up study indicate that NDIs show clinical and radiographic stability, provided oral cleanliness and glycemic levels are relatively maintained. Further long-term clinical studies are needed to evaluate implant stability over the period along with controlled glycemic status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most accurate data help to minimize possible mistakes on a patient´s evaluation, as more robust findings are necessary to establish a correct diagnosis, prognosis and, consequently, better treatment. PURPOSE Could biomarker levels in the saliva help to distinguish between healthy implants and implants with peri-implant disease? MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic database search of Pubmed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, OVID and Scielo was performed. The articles and abstracts identified were considered relevant if they compared cytokine levels in saliva from patients with healthy implants to those in saliva from patients with untreated peri-implantitis. RESULTS Lower salivary levels of interleukin 1β were found in healthy implants than in inflamed implants. A significantly positive correlation was found between the salivary levels of IL-6 and peri-implant inflammatory conditions. The salivary concentrations of total antioxidants, urate and ascorbate were higher in healthy implants than in inflamed implants. The data extracted from the 6 studies evaluated in this review revealed heterogeneity in relation to the clinical parameters assessed, implant restoration, bone loss and peri-implant disease definitions. CONCLUSIONS There was no clear, developed basis for using any specific biomarker in a clinical setting to distinguish between healthy implants and those with peri implant disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A close relationship between poor glycemic control and peri-implant break down has been demonstrated. It is hypothesized that levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in peri-implant sulcular fluid (PISF) are higher with increased glycemic levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. PURPOSE In the present study, we examined the clinical and radiographic peri-implant parameters and levels of AGEs among different glycemic levels in diabetic patients and assessed whether the levels of AGEs correlate with clinical peri-implant parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-three patients who participated in this study were divided into four groups; Group-1: HbA1c 6.1%-8%; Group-2: HbA1c 8.1%-10%; Group-3: HbA1c > 10%; Group-4: non-diabetic individuals with HbA1c < 6%. Peri-implant plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD) and crestal bone loss (CBL) were recorded. Levels of AGEs in PISF were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Between-group comparison of means was verified with Kruskal-Wallis test and Pearson correlation coefficient for correlations of AGE levels with peri-implant parameters. RESULTS Peri-implant PI, BOP, PD, and CBL were significantly higher in group-1, -2, and -3 as compared to non-diabetic patients (P < .05). These parameters were significantly higher in group-2 and group-3 versus group-1 (P < .01). Mean PI, BOP, PD, and CBL were comparable between group-2 and group-3 patients (P > .05). Mean levels of AGEs in PISF were significantly higher in relation to higher levels of HbA1c levels. Significant positive correlations were found between AGEs and PD (P = .0221) and CBL (P = .0425); and significant negative correlation was found for PI (P = .0376) in patients with HbA1c levels >10%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Clinical and radiographic peri-implant parameters were poor and levels of AGEs were significantly high in patients with high glycemic levels. These findings suggest that AGEs may be considered as potential marker of inflammation in diabetic individuals with peri-implantitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Implant-supported overdentures are an alternative predictable rehabilitation method that has a high impact on improving the patient's quality of life. However, some biological complications may interfere with the maintenance and survival of these overdenture implants. The goal of this article was to assess the factors that affect peri-implant success, through a hypothetical prediction model for biological complications of implant overdentures. METHODS A retrospective observational, prevalence study was conducted in 58 edentulous Caucasian patients rehabilitated with implant overdentures. A total of 229 implants were included in the study. Anamnestic, clinical, and implant-related parameters were collected and recorded in a single database. "Patient" was chosen as the unit of analysis, and a complete screening protocol was established. The data analytical study included assessing the odds ratio, concerning the presence or absence of a particular risk factor, by using binary logistic regression modeling. Probability values (p values) inferior to 0.05 were considered as representing statistically significant evidence. RESULTS The performed prediction model included the following variables: mean probing depth, metal exposure, IL1B_allele2, maxillary edentulousness, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The F. nucleatum showed significant association with the outcome. Introducing a negative coefficient appeared to prevent complications or even boost the biological defense when associated with other factors. CONCLUSIONS The prediction model developed in this study could serve as a basis for further improved models that would assist clinicians in the daily diagnosis and treatment planning practice of oral rehabilitation with implant overdentures.

Abstract
Eye-derived fluids, including tears, aqueous humour and vitreous humour often contain molecular signatures of ocular disease states. These signatures can be composed of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, proteases and soluble receptors. However, the small quantities (<10 µl) of these fluids severely limit the detection of these proteins by traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or Western blot. To maximise the amount of information generated from the analysis of these specimens, many researchers have employed multiplex immunoassay technologies for profiling the expression or modification of multiple proteins from minute sample volumes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate implant survival and primary stability parameters in patients with diabetes with different levels of glycosylated hemoglobin Alc (HbA1c) treated with immediate placement and provisionalization of implant-supported, single-tooth replacements over 2 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-five patients were divided into three groups according to their HbA1c levels: 33 patients in Group 1 (<6, control group); 30 patients in Group 2 (6.1-8); and 22 patients in Group 3 (8.1-10). Each patient received one-one-piece implant in the anterior zone of the upper maxillary. The implant survival rate was analyzed for each group, together with three variables to evaluate the general state of peri-implant health: probe depth, bleeding on probing, marginal bone loss. RESULTS Marginal bone loss increased in relation with higher HbA1c levels. For marginal bone loss in Group 1, mean resorption values ranged from 0.51 after 6 months to 0.72 after 2 years in comparison with respective values of 1.33 and 1.92 in Group 3. This pattern was repeated for bleeding on probing, both parameters showing significant differences between groups. For bleeding on probing, mean bleeding levels varied from 0.36 in Group I at 6 months after implant placement, to 0.59 in Group 3 (P = 0.041 between the three groups). Peri-implant pocket depth showed the same tendency to increase in relation to HbA1C but differences between groups did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Patients with diabetes can receive implant-based treatments with immediate loading safely, providing they present moderate HbA1c values.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the release of bone markers during osseointegration of immediately loaded and nonloaded implants. Forty patients who were indicated for rehabilitation with dental implants randomly received either implant and prosthesis placement within 72 hours (group IM) or implant insertion and no prosthesis placement (group NL). Peri-implant crevicular fluid was collected immediately after implant insertion and 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after surgery and levels of osteoprotegerin, transforming growth factors, osteocalcin, osteopontin, and parathyroid hormone were evaluated using Luminex assay. Bleeding index and peri-implantar sulcus depth were also evaluated. The data were compared using statistical tests (α = 5%). No statistical difference was found regarding demographic and clinical parameters (p > .05). Transforming growth factors, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, and parathyroid hormone presented an earlier release peak in group IM than in NL group (p < .05). Osteocalcin achieved higher levels in group IM versus group NL between 7 and 30 days of evaluation (p < .05). It may be concluded that earlier loading positively modulates bone mediators release around immediately loaded implants when compared with nonloaded dental implants.
