Abstract
As a group, health care workers (HCWs) were vulnerable to poor mental health (MH) prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The added burdens of COVID-19 have put extra stressors on the health system and its most precious resource-its workers. This pandemic has exacerbated already poor MH in HCWs, leading to a workforce that is burnt out and struggling to cope with growing demands. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, risk factors for poor HCW mental health have been identified. The changes in practices brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and identified as risk factors for poor MH that were experienced in other areas of health care and medical establishments were also witnessed by HCWs working in cytology. Indeed, all health care staff have been affected by this pandemic, and we now know that MH problems in HCWs are negatively impacting the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath as they adversely influence quality of care. The question is then rightfully asked: Will we, as health care staff working in medical establishments, ever be the same again, or has COVID-19 forever changed our working lives? Fortunately, protective factors and multi-level interventions associated with adaptive MH outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic have also been identified. In this article, we conclude that whilst working life is unlikely to return to pre-pandemic practices, the health care system now has an opportunity to promote individual and systemic growth by adhering to the principles that protect HCWs' MH and mitigate burnout during these challenging times.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the use of cell block (CB) preparation from fine-needle aspiration cytology for diagnosing oral and maxillofacial diseases. STUDY DESIGN We performed a retrospective analysis of 568 samples collected by our laboratory for CB preparation from fine-needle aspiration cytology of the oral and maxillofacial region between January 2001 and October 2021. We performed cytologic diagnoses and compared them with the available histopathologic diagnoses to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of CB preparation for identifying malignant lesions. RESULTS The most frequent diagnosis was pleomorphic adenoma (n = 44, 7.7%), followed by metastatic squamous-cell carcinoma (n = 28, 4.9%) and odontogenic keratocyst (n = 26, 4.6%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of CB preparation, which revealed detailed morphologic and architectural patterns, were 70.0%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 62.5%, and 80.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Cell block preparation from fine-needle aspiration cytology of the oral and maxillofacial region may be a useful adjunctive diagnostic tool for diagnosing oral and maxillofacial diseases because it reveals morphologic and architectural patterns similar to those shown on histopathologic slides, leading to the better categorization of diseases.

Abstract
Objective In this review, we evaluate the role of liquid biopsy in managing lung cancer patients during the still ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) healthcare emergency. Background The novel influenza coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2) has upended several aspects of our lives, including medical activities. In this setting, many routine cancer diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been suspended, leading to delays in diagnosis, treatments, and, ultimately, increases in cancer mortality rates. Equally drastic has been the impact of COVID-19 on clinical trials, many of which have been stalled or have never begun. This has left many patients who were hoping to receive innovative treatments in a limbo. Although, as of today, the introduction of drastic security measures has been crucially important to contain the pandemic, one cannot ignore the need to continue providing chronically ill patients all the health care they need, in terms of detection, prevention, and treatment. In these unprecedented times, liquid biopsy, more than ever before, may play a relevant role in the adequate management of these frail patients. Methods we performed a deep analysis of the recent international literature published in English on PUBMED in the last six months focused on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the management of lung cancer patients, focusing the attention on the role of liquid biopsy. Conclusions COVID-19 pandemic has significantly modified our lives and overall medical practice. In these unprecedented times, liquid biopsy may represent a valid and less time-consuming diagnostic approach than conventional tissue and cytological specimens.

Abstract
PURPOSE The rising cancer burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) stresses already weak health care systems and poses unique challenges. In resource-constrained LMICs and in circumstances where most patients must pay out of pocket for diagnostic tests, these may not be available or affordable for many. Cytopathology provides a simple, inexpensive, standardized, and low-technology diagnostic procedure that is increasingly used as an effective tool to address the hurdles faced in cancer control programs in LMICs. This review explores the potential role of cytopathology in LMICs in reducing the cancer burden. METHODS This review studied the existing literature across the globe regarding the utilization of cytopathology as a diagnostic or screening tool for various types of malignancies as well as its advantages and disadvantages, depending on the local situation. RESULTS Apart from the usefulness of cytopathology, this review also sheds light on the barriers to using cytopathology in LMICs. Most recently, SARS-CoV-2 has produced several unique challenges for cytopathology. These are being met with innovative measures to combat the effects of the pandemic and ensure the safe delivery of essential cytopathology services. CONCLUSION The usefulness of cytopathologic techniques has been demonstrated via various studies, even during the recent pandemic. If cytology is to be used appropriately, the focus needs to be on integrating it into the national cancer screening and diagnostic programs as well as providing well-trained human resources.

Abstract
Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide but recent years have seen a rapidly rising proportion of cases of advanced non-small cell carcinoma amenable to increasingly targeted therapy, initially based on the differential response to systemic treatment of tumours of squamous or glandular differentiation. In two-thirds of the cases, where patients present with advanced disease, both primary pathological diagnosis and biomarker testing is based on small biopsies and cytopathological specimens. The framework of this article is an overview of the technical aspect of each stage of the specimen pathway with emphasis on maximising potential for success when using small cytology samples. It brings together the current literature addressing pre-analytical and analytical aspects of specimen acquisition, performing rapid onsite evaluation, and undertaking diagnostic and predictive testing using immunocytochemistry and molecular platforms. The advantages and drawbacks of performing analysis on cell block and non-cell block specimen preparations is discussed.

Abstract
Objective Currently, it is thought that uterine cervix mucosal samples present a low risk of SARS‐CoV‐2 exposure. So far, there is no evidence of SARS‐CoV‐2 detection in Papanicolaou (Pap) smears. Nevertheless, clinicians could be exposed unaware to the coronavirus while performing and handling a Pap smear. We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the presence of SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA in cervical liquid‐based cytology (LBC) samples in women who tested positive for a nasopharyngeal COVID‐19 PCR test. Methods From our laboratory database, we identified patients with data on a cervical cancer screening LBC sample paired with a positive nasopharyngeal COVID‐19 PCR test. Relevant LBC samples taken within an incubation period of 14 days and post‐onset RNA shedding interval of 25 days were subsequently tested for SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA using RT‐PCR tests. Results The study group consisted of 102 women. Of those, 23 LBC samples were tested. SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA was detected in one LBC sample from a 26‐year‐old asymptomatic woman taken six days before reporting headaches and knee arthralgia with a positive nasopharyngeal SARS‐CoV‐2 RT‐PCR test. Conclusions It is possible to detect SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA in cervical LBC samples at an early asymptomatic stage of COVID‐19. In general, this finding is infrequent in asymptomatic women who tested SARS‐CoV‐2 positive within an incubation of 14 days and a post‐onset RNA shedding period of 25 days. We fully support the current thinking that cervical LBC samples from asymptomatic women pose a low risk of SARS‐CoV‐2 exposure and can be handled in the frame of good microbiological practice and procedures. This is the first dedicated study of the infectious potential of COVID‐19 in PAP smears. It includes one positive liquid‐based cytology sample paired with a positive nasopharyngeal swab RT‐ PCR SARS CoV‐2 test. The significance of this finding is discussed. Finally, the current approach to handling LBC samples is reinforced.

Abstract
Since the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak was declared a pandemic, the magnitude of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has continued to grow, putting an unprecedented strain on all medical fields. Its effects on cytopathology workloads have been dramatic. Indeed, despite the implementation of several laboratory biosafety recommendations, cytological screening activities and cytological sampling of patients at low risk of malignancy have been postponed to limit the risk of contagion and to lessen the strain on overwhelmed hospital facilities. In this scenario, a drastic reduction in the total number of cytological specimens has been observed worldwide. This review summarizes the current evidence of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cytopathology practice by focusing on its impact on cytological sample workload.
