Empathy amongst dental students: An institutional cross-sectional survey in Poland and Croatia

Measuring satisfaction with dental education among dentists and dental students in Croatia: A cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

The study aimed to determine satisfaction level with the quality of education among dental students and dentists in Croatia based on the acquired knowledge and clinical and soft skills.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 533 dentists and dental students. The questionnaire consisted of four sections with closed-ended questions. The first section included personal and professional data, whereas the second to fourth sections assessed satisfaction with learned basic dental, professional technical or clinal and interpersonal social or soft skills on a 5-point Likert scale. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U-test and linear regression analysis. The significance level was set at .05.

RESULTS

When comparing satisfaction scores between dentists and dental students in terms of basic dental knowledge and skills learned, students showed higher satisfaction scores for the categories of "Emergency Medical Situations" (p = .005) and "Ergonomic Principles of Work" (p = .004). Dentists, on the other hand, showed higher satisfaction for the categories "Selection and use of local anaesthetics and local antibiotics" (p = .005, p = .026; respectively). For the type of technical skills from the different areas of dentistry, dentists were most satisfied with "Oral Surgery" (4.26 ± 0.85), while students were most satisfied with "Oral Medicine" (4.29 ± 0.89). Finally, when comparing satisfaction scores with social skills, dentists had lower satisfaction scores in all categories studied (p ≤ .05).

CONCLUSION

Dental students showed higher overall satisfaction than dentists. The most significant satisfaction was expressed in technical skills learned, and the most considerable dissatisfaction was recorded in the unmeasurable skills category focused on "Career management".

Empathy of dental students and educators in French hospitals: A cross-sectional study

Empathy is a key factor in the dentist-patient relationship. The aim of this study was to determine empathy in dental students and educators in French hospital dental services. A cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students and educators who practiced in 10 hospital dental services affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Lorraine in France. A questionnaire was self-administered online using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE). The study included 209 participants comprising 50 students in fourth year, 66 students in fifth year, 48 students in sixth year, and 45 educators. Participants were 63.6% females, aged 27 ± 8 years. The mean empathy score was 109.40 ± 11.65. The sub-scores of the three dimensions were 57.02 ± 6.64 for Perspective Taking, 42.56 ± 6.22 for Compassionate Care, and 9.78 ± 2.61 for Walking in the Patient's Shoes. Females showed significant higher empathy scores than males (111.36 vs. 105.84). The empathy score was correlated with age and insignificantly decreased during clinical training (from 110.06 in fourth year to 106.63 in sixth year). French dental students and educators showed high levels of empathy.

Extreme Situation Experienced by Dental Students of the Medical University of Silesia Due to the SARS-CoV-2 Epidemic during the First Lockdown

The pandemic declared in many countries in 2020 due to COVID-19 led to the freezing of economies and the introduction of distance learning in both schools and universities. This unusual situation has affected the mental state of citizens, which has the potential to lead to the development of post-traumatic stress and depression. This study aimed to assess the level of stress in dental students in the context of the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic. A survey on the PSS-10 scale was prepared to measure the level of perceived stress. The study included 164 dental students at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The results showed the impact of COVID-19 on the stress of students, with 67.7% reporting high levels of stress. The study also revealed that stress was higher among older female students. This paper recommends that the university provide more intensive psychological care as psychological first aid strategies in epidemics or natural disasters and to consider telemedicine in order to deliver services due to the limitations of the pandemic.

Causes and Severity of Dentophobia in Polish Adults-A Questionnaire Study

Introduction: A phobia is defined as an irrational fear, the intensity of which is inadequate to the circumstances, and it leads to the avoidance of situations that trigger it. A person with dentophobia avoids dental treatment, even when the pain in the teeth or oral cavity exceeds their fear. Fear and anxiety are the most common emotional states experienced by patients in dental offices. The aim of the study was to determine the following: the probable causes of dentophobia, which procedures patients fear the most, and the subjective feeling of fear on a point scale. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted in the form of an anonymous online questionnaire and its printed equivalent. The survey was available from 23 January to 16 March 2020, and it was addressed to adult respondents. In total, 130 respondents and 102 dental students took part in the survey. Results: It is worthwhile emphasizing that the main reason for dentist visits (for almost one-third of men and almost one-fifth of women surveyed) is a toothache. Periodontal problems (2.2%), tooth extractions (1.8%), and prosthetic consultations (0.9%) were relatively rare reasons for the respondents to visit a dentist. The vast majority of respondents see the cause of dentophobia as being related to their previous bad experiences. The second most frequently chosen answer is anxiety, which is caused by the sounds of dental apparatus. Conclusions: Pain is the most common reason given for fear of visiting a dentist, as well as the cause of dentophobia. Pain reduction can positively affect the frequency of visits to a dentist, thus, improving the condition of the oral cavity of patients.
