Contrasting effects of altered precipitation regimes on soil nitrogen cycling at the global scale

Effects of landscape changes on water quality: A global meta-analysis

Landscape changes resulting from anthropogenic activities and climate changes severely impact surface water quality. A global perspective on understanding their relationship is a prerequisite for pursuing equity in water security and sustainable development. A sequent meta-analysis synthesizing 625 regional studies from 63 countries worldwide was conducted to analyze the impacts on water quality from changing landscape compositions in the catchment and explore the moderating factors and temporal evolution. Results exhibit that total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water are mostly concerned and highly responsive to landscape changes. Expansion of urban lands fundamentally degraded worldwide water quality over the past 20 years, of which the arid areas tended to suffer more harsh deterioration. Increasing forest cover, particularly low-latitude forests, significantly decreased the risk of water pollution, especially biological and heavy metal contamination, suggesting the importance of forest restoration in global urbanization. The effect size of agricultural land changes on water quality was spatially scale-dependent, decreasing and then increasing with the buffer radius expanding. Wetland coverage positively correlated with organic matter in water typified by COD, and the correlation coefficient peaked in the boreal areas (r=0.82, p<0.01). Overall, the global impacts of landscape changes on water quality have been intensifying since the 1990s. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps still exist in developing areas, especially in Africa and South America, where the water quality is sensitive to landscape changes and is expected to experience dramatic shifts in foreseeable future development. Our study revealed the worldwide consistency and heterogeneity between regions, thus serving as a research roadmap to address the quality-induced global water scarcity under landscape changes and to direct the management of land and water.

Aridity threshold for alpine soil nitrogen isotope signature and ecosystem nitrogen cycling

Determination of tipping points in nitrogen (N) isotope (δ15N) natural abundance, especially soil δ15N, with increasing aridity, is critical for estimating N-cycling dynamics and N limitation in terrestrial ecosystems. However, whether there are linear or nonlinear responses of soil δ15N to increases in aridity and if these responses correspond well with soil N cycling remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated soil δ15N and soil N-cycling characteristics in both topsoil and subsoil layers along a drought gradient across a 3000-km transect of drylands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We found that the effect of increasing aridity on soil δ15N values shifted from negative to positive with thresholds at aridity index (AI) = 0.27 and 0.29 for the topsoil and subsoil, respectively, although soil N pools and N transformation rates linearly decreased with increasing aridity in both soil layers. Furthermore, we identified markedly different correlations between soil δ15N and soil N-cycling traits above and below the AI thresholds (0.27 and 0.29 for topsoil and subsoil, respectively). Specifically, in wetter regions, soil δ15N positively correlated with most soil N-cycling traits, suggesting that high soil δ15N may result from the "openness" of soil N cycling. Conversely, in drier regions, soil δ15N showed insignificant relationships with soil N-cycling traits and correlated well with factors, such as soil-available phosphorus and foliage δ15N, demonstrating that pathways other than typical soil N cycling may dominate soil δ15N under drier conditions. Overall, these results highlight that different ecosystem N-cycling processes may drive soil δ15N along the aridity gradient, broadening our understanding of N cycling as indicated by soil δ15N under changing drought regimes. The aridity threshold of soil δ15N should be considered in terrestrial N-cycling models when incorporating 15N isotope signals to predict N cycling and availability under climatic dryness.

Differential responses of soil extracellular enzyme activity and stoichiometry to precipitation changes in a poplar plantation

Changes in precipitation patterns can significantly affect belowground processes. Although soil extracellular enzymes play a vital role in several biogeochemical processes, our knowledge of how precipitation changes affect soil extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) and stoichiometry remains insufficient. In this study, we investigated the activities of C-acquiring enzyme (β-1,4-glucosidase), N-acquiring enzymes (β-N-acetylglucosaminidase and leucine aminopeptidase), and P-acquiring enzyme (acid phosphatase) under different precipitation scenarios [ambient precipitation (CK), 30% decrease in precipitation (moderate DPT), 50% decrease in precipitation (extreme DPT), 30% increase in precipitation (moderate IPT), and 50% increase in precipitation (extreme IPT)] in a poplar plantation. We found soil EEA exhibited more pronounced increases to moderate IPT compared to moderate DPT (positive asymmetry), the opposite trend (negative asymmetry) was observed under extreme precipitation; whereas soil EEA C:N:P stoichiometry exhibited negative asymmetry at moderate precipitation changes, and exhibited positive asymmetry at extreme precipitation changes. Under moderate precipitation changes, the asymmetry of soil EEA was mainly regulated by asymmetries of respective microbial biomass and litter mass; the asymmetry of soil EEA stoichiometry was mainly regulated by asymmetries of respective soil stoichiometric ratios and litter mass. Furthermore, under extreme precipitation changes, the asymmetries of soil EEA and stoichiometry were best explained by the asymmetry of soil moisture. Our results provide the first evidence of double asymmetric responses of soil EEA and stoichiometry to precipitation changes and highlight the need to consider this asymmetry when modeling the dynamics of biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems.

Grazing and precipitation addition reduces the temporal stability of aboveground biomass in a typical steppe of Chinese Loess Plateau

Few studies on the effects of human activities and global climate change on temporal stability have considered either grazing or precipitation addition (PA). How community stability responds to the interaction between PA and grazing in a single experiment remains unknown. We studied the impact of grazing and PA on the temporal stability of communities in four years field experiment conducted in a typical steppe, adopting a randomized complete block design with grazing was the main block factor and PA was the split block factor. Grazing and PA had negative impacts on the temporal stability of communities. PA reduced the community stability through decreasing the stability of subordinate and community species richness (SR), whereas grazing reduced the community stability through decreasing the stability of the SR and dominant species. In contrast, grazing and PA maintained community stability through increasing species asynchronism and promoting the decoupling of asynchronism and stability. Our results revealed the different mechanisms of grazing and PA on community stability. Exploring the response characteristics of population dynamics to global climate change and pasture management is key to understanding future climate scenarios and changes in community stability under grazing.

The trait co-variation regulates the response of bryophytes to nitrogen deposition: A meta-analysis

The nitrogen deposition has the potential to alter the trait composition of plant communities by affecting the fitness and physiological adaptation of species, consequently exerting an influence on ecosystem processes. Despite the importance of bryophytes in nutrient and carbon dynamics across different ecosystems, there is a lack of research examining the relationship between nitrogen deposition and the co-variation of bryophyte traits. To address this gap, a meta-analysis was conducted using data from 27 independent studies to investigate potential associations between trait co-variation of bryophytes and nitrogen deposition. The results revealed that interspecific variability regulates the influence of nitrogen deposition on bryophytes by affecting trait co-variation. Multiple correspondence analysis identified six combinations of closely related traits. For example, species with unbranched main stems frequently exhibit robust leaf midribs, leading to leaf wrinkling and leaf clasping around the stem as a response to water loss. Some weft or mat species tend to obtain resources (nitrogen) through their scale hairs on the main stem. Some species with narrow leaves require leaf teeth to maintain a normal leaf shape. The subgroup analyses indicated that certain traits, including unbranched main stem, changes in leaf morphology, robust leaf midrib, main stem without scale hairs, narrow leaf, leaf margin with teeth, undeveloped apophysis, and erect capsule minimize interaction with pollutants and represent a resource strategy. Conversely, functional traits representing a resource acquisition strategy, such as branched main stem, no changes in leaf morphology, short and weak leaf midrib, main stem with scale hairs, broad leaf, leaf margin without teeth, developed apophysis, and non-erect capsule increase pollutant exposure. Overall, our results suggest that anthropogenic global change may significantly impact bryophytes due to changes in their individual physiology and colony ecological indicators caused by increased nitrogen deposition.

C:N:P stoichiometry of plants, soils, and microorganisms: Response to altered precipitation

Precipitation changes modify C, N, and P cycles, which regulate the functions and structure of terrestrial ecosystems. Although altered precipitation affects above- and belowground C:N:P stoichiometry, considerable uncertainties remain regarding plant-microbial nutrient allocation strategies under increased (IPPT) and decreased (DPPT) precipitation. We meta-analyzed 827 observations from 235 field studies to investigate the effects of IPPT and DPPT on the C:N:P stoichiometry of plants, soils, and microorganisms. DPPT reduced leaf C:N ratio, but increased the leaf and root N:P ratios reflecting stronger decrease of P compared with N mobility in soil under drought. IPPT increased microbial biomass C (+13%), N (+15%), P (26%), and the C:N ratio, whereas DPPT decreased microbial biomass N (-12%) and the N:P ratio. The C:N and N:P ratios of plant leaves were more sensitive to medium DPPT than to IPPT because drought increased plant N content, particularly in humid areas. The responses of plant and soil C:N:P stoichiometry to altered precipitation did not fit the double asymmetry model with a positive asymmetry under IPPT and a negative asymmetry under extreme DPPT. Soil microorganisms were more sensitive to IPPT than to DPPT, but they were more sensitive to extreme DPPT than extreme IPPT, consistent with the double asymmetry model. Soil microorganisms maintained stoichiometric homeostasis, whereas N:P ratios of plants follow that of the soils under altered precipitation. In conclusion, specific N allocation strategies of plants and microbial communities as well as N and P availability in soil critically mediate C:N:P stoichiometry by altered precipitation that need to be considered by prediction of ecosystem functions and C cycling under future climate change scenarios.

Soil biogeochemical responses to multiple co-occurring forms of human-induced environmental change

Human activities cause a multitude of environmental issues, including increased temperatures and altered precipitation patterns associated with climate change, air pollution, and other impacts of urbanization. One area highly affected by these issues is the Sonoran Desert, specifically the Phoenix metropolitan area where urbanization is among the most rapid in the United States. Most studies investigate these multiple environmental change factors independently or sometimes in pairs, but rarely all together as co-occurring forms of change. We examined how the simultaneous manipulation of increasing temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, nitrogen deposition, and urbanization influenced soil respiration and mineral N pools in the Sonoran Desert. Soil was collected from urban and exurban sites, from both nitrogen-fertilized and control plots. To simulate projected climate change, the soils were incubated in microcosm at the annual average Phoenix temperature as well a 2 ℃ increase under a factorial precipitation treatment of decreased frequency and increased pulse size. Our results show that C and N dynamics were altered by all four forms of environmental change. However, the dominance of significant 3- and 4-way interactions among the four environmental factors for both respiration and mineral N pools demonstrates that the impact of any given form of environmental change will depend on the levels of the other environmental factors. In other words, the cumulative effect of altered precipitation, fertilization, temperature, and urbanization on soil biogeochemical processes is not necessarily predictable from their individual impact.
