Abstract
PURPOSE This study's purpose was to investigate how nurses, using a picture schedule, enable or hinder the realization of disabled children's agency in the preparation for an MRI procedure carried out under general anaesthesia. METHODS A qualitative observation study was used to explore the interaction of nurses and children. The data consisted of video recordings of 25 preparation situations of 3 (3-8 years old) children (with challenges in communication and/or cognitive skills) with 4 nurses. Verbal and nonverbal communication was analysed with interventionist applied conversation analysis. RESULTS What was most crucial was how the picture schedule was used during the interaction. Reciprocal information sharing, responding to the child's initiatives by negotiating and allowing the child to take physical action with the picture schedule enabled the realization of the child's agency. CONCLUSIONS The preparation process should aim to help the child prepare in his/her own way. The preparation tools should encourage reciprocal interaction in informing and in responding to the children's initiatives. The preparation practices should include enough time for the child's initiatives and physical participation. The results can be used in assessing preparation tools and how they are used from the perspective of the child's agency.

Abstract
Determining the child's best interests in a hospital setting will ideally involve the combined views of children, parents, and healthcare professionals. However, few studies have explored parents' experiences of their child's best interests when they engage with the healthcare system. Therefore, this study aimed to explore parents' experiences of their child's best interests during hospitalisation. A descriptive qualitative inductive design using face-to-face parent-child combined interviews, analysed by latent content analysis, was used. Sixteen parents recruited from a tertiary hospital in Western Australia were interviewed. Collaboration, development of trustworthy relationships, and effective communication were essential in shaping parents' experiences of their child's best interests during hospitalisation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited qualitative research focussed specifically on what it is like for children and young people with intellectual disabilities coming into hospital, with much of the evidence-base being about those with Autism Spectrum Condition or adults with intellectual disabilities. AIM To share rich detail of the emotional and physical impact on children and young people with intellectual disabilities of attending hospital, from their own and their parent's perspective. METHODS Talking Mats interviews, sticker survey and photography with children and young people with intellectual disabilities, and in-depth interviews, hospital diaries and photography with their parents. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The multiple and compounding layers of complexity surrounding hospital care of children and young people with intellectual disabilities resulted in challenges associated with loss of familiarity and routine, undergoing procedures, managing sensory overload, managing pain and having a lack of safety awareness. An individualised approach to their care is needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Effective healthcare communication (HCC) is critical for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who may have complex healthcare needs. The goal of this study was to gain family caregiver and provider perspectives on facilitators and challenges to effective HCC for youth with IDD. METHODS Caregivers of, and providers for youth with IDD were recruited from the community to participate in virtual focus group (FG) sessions. FGs were 60-90 min long and were facilitated by a research team consisting of caregivers and providers. The FGs were recorded, transcribed, and coded inductively for HCC themes. RESULTS Nineteen stakeholders participated in the FGs (caregivers: n = 14; providers: n = 5). Twenty-three themes were coded from the transcripts and were categorized by whether they focused on providers, caregivers, or healthcare systems. CONCLUSIONS Provider behaviors such as active listening and demonstrating humility were found to be critical for effective HCC. Fewer caregiver factors, such as advocacy, and systems factors such as visit format, emerged from the FG data. FG themes represent challenges that future interventions must address. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Efforts to improve HCC, and thus healthcare outcomes for youth with IDD, should address challenges identified by caregivers and providers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify children and young people's preferences for effective healthcare communication. DESIGN A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted to identify evidence from children and young people on effective healthcare communication. Electronic databases and reference lists of relevant articles were searched to July 2020. RESULTS A total of 13 studies were included. Five major themes were identified: medical information (timing, amount, coordination and futures), person not patient (creating relationships, time, nurse involvement, sensitivity), type of communication (creative and interactive, behavioural, talking and listening, written communication), consultations (first impressions, with and without parents, actively promoting involvement, open and honest, age appropriate) and communication with parents (using parental knowledge, support). CONCLUSIONS Research in this area remains sparse and consistent implementation is debateable. Children and young people articulate a preference for two-way healthcare communication. General principles for effective communication are identified as well as the need to avoid making assumptions and to tailor approaches to individuals. Establishing and maintaining relationships is essential and requires time and resources. Parents and carers have a positive role in healthcare communication which needs to be balanced with the needs and rights of children. All these factors also apply to children with communication difficulties or from marginalised groups, but additional extra support may be required. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42019145539.

Abstract
Experience Based Co-Design (EBCD) and co-production are interdisciplinary collaborative approaches to improve health care services by involving all stakeholders. These approaches capture the experiences of all stakeholders who come in contact with services and use experiences as evidence to promote and implement service changes. The use of psychotropic medications for behaviours that challenge (BtC) in people with intellectual disabilities (ID) is a complex issue because of its off-licence use and use in combination with other medications for physical and psychiatric co-morbidities, which leads to overmedication of people with ID. As support staff plays a pivotal role in the prescribing for people with ID, we have developed a staff training programme, SPECTROM, to help reduce overmedication. A project team developed SPECTROM under the guidance of a Programme Development Group (PDG) consisting of 21 stakeholders. The PDG analysed data from a literature review, four focus groups and a co-design event day involving 26 stakeholders. In this paper, we have presented data based on the findings from the co-design event day, primarily on the issue of support staff effectively liaising with professionals such as doctors, nurses, and other community learning disability team members. In-depth information and recommendations were proposed at the co-design event, which helped develop the draft SPECTROM. The draft was finalised after receiving feedback from 56 stakeholders. Co-production and a modified EBCD can be successfully used to create training interventions and improve health care services. More research should utilise co-production and EBCD and use service users' experiences to develop interventions and improve health care services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with learning disabilities (LD) are more likely to have health conditions that require hospital attendance than children without LD. Like all children, they can experience fear and distress related to procedural anxiety. Parents play a key role in managing procedural anxiety in children with LD. No previous published qualitative studies have explored parental experiences of caring for a child with LD and procedural anxiety in hospital. OBJECTIVES To explore how parents experienced caring for their child with LD and procedural anxiety in hospital. METHODS A purposive sample of six participants were recruited through a Facebook group for parents of children with LD. Remote semi-structured interviews were conducted via telephone, Microsoft Teams or Whatsapp. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. RESULTS Five key themes were generated: (1) Emotional toll: parents characterized their experiences as highly emotional; reporting feeling stressed, anxious and worried. (2) Restraint and holding: parents spoke of their experiences of restraint which was largely viewed as negative and sometimes inappropriate. (3) Advocacy: parents articulated their responsibility as advocates for their children. (4) Going it alone: parents were extremely proactive in managing their child's anxieties but some also felt highly-pressurized and isolated. (5) Inconsistency and uncertainty: parents experienced inconsistency and uncertainty in their children's care from healthcare professionals which led to anxiety and frustration. CONCLUSION Parents of children with both LD and procedural anxiety experienced many challenges. Parents' expertise must be utilized by clinicians when caring for children with LD and procedural anxiety whilst ensuring appropriate support for parents. Nurses require specific training in psychosocial interventions to enhance care for children with LD and procedural anxiety. Further research identifying effective nursing strategies to enhance parental experiences would be beneficial to improve care to this patient group.

Abstract
Patients and families experiencing developmental disabilities (DDs) may lack trust in physicians due to negative experiences in healthcare. DDs include conditions impairing physical, learning, language, or behavior areas, beginning during the developmental period and impacting daily functioning ('Developmental Disabilities'). Medical students generally do not receive standard training to effectively communicate with and diagnose patients with DDs. ARIE is a program for medical students to meet and learn from these patients and their families. Students learn about these families' experiences during home visits, guided by standardized interview questions and surveys about families' trust in physicians. Families did not appear to strongly trust physicians, with no significant changes after the program. Families shared they experienced physicians' lack of empathy and knowledge when caring for patients with DDs. Families wanted future physicians to be empathetic and informed when treating children with disabilities. Students reported increased comfort and confidence in interacting with patients with DDs as well as their families after completing the training program. Implementing a service-learning model focused on DDs at other medical schools, incorporating training with communication techniques and home visits, can increase students' confidence and experiences when engaging with patients with DDs and their families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of disabled children report poorer inpatient experiences when they stay in hospital, and some staff report finding communicating with disabled children challenging. This study tested the feasibility of implementing a training package for staff on paediatric wards to improve communication with disabled children, especially those with communication difficulties, and their families. The package was developed with parent carers and clinicians, and comprises a manual, a video of parent carers talking about real experiences, discussion points and local resources. The 50-minutes training is intended for in-house delivery by local facilitators. METHODS Thirteen training sessions were delivered in paediatric wards across four hospitals in England, totalling 123 staff who took part. Participants completed questionnaires before (n = 109) and after (n = 36) training, and a sample of champions (senior clinicians) and facilitators were interviewed at the end of the study. RESULTS Facilitators found the training easy to deliver, and participants felt they took away important messages to improve their practice. After the training, further changes were reported at an organizational level, including offering further training and reviewing practices. CONCLUSIONS This study provides supporting evidence for the implementation of a low-cost, minimal-resource training package to support staff communication with children and their families in hospitals. It provides promising indication of impact on behavioural change at the individual and organizational level. PATIENT AND PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Parent carers identified the need and helped to develop the training, including featuring in the training video. They were also consulted throughout the study on research design, delivery and reporting.

Abstract
Children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) can have complex health conditions that require intense and ongoing care management by multiple healthcare professionals (HCPs). Families often experience frustrations and challenges sharing necessary information about their children's unique emotional and communicative needs with HCPs. In turn, these needs are often poorly documented and shared with other HCPs. This contributes to compromised care and frustrations for families and HCPs. We conducted a qualitative study using focus groups to examine how 10 parents and 3 HCPs experienced provision of care for children with ID, as well as their suggestions for developing a one-page personal health profile (PHP) to improve communication. Parents suggested including behavioural descriptors rather than diagnoses. All participants believed a one-page PHP that was child and parent led would be very helpful and would improve communication between HCPs, parents and children leading to effective and supportive care.

Abstract
Purpose Children with complex medical needs often require extensive hospitalizations in the first years of life. Many of these children also experience complex communication needs and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies to interact with health care staff. Unfortunately, suboptimal communication experiences have been reported among these children, their families, and hospital staff; however, no studies have described the patterns of interactions beyond measures of self-report. The purpose of this study was to describe child-parent-provider interaction patterns that occurred in an inpatient unit. Method Observational techniques were used to systematically describe the interactions of a 28-month-old child with complex communication needs, her parents, and 26 health care providers on an inpatient rehabilitation unit over 10 days. Results Results indicated that substantial variability in the child's routine occurred across days and providers. Interactions were generally short and occurred for only a small proportion of the child's waking hours. The child and her mother actively communicated to varying degrees across sessions, yet health care providers often dominated interactions. The child used multiple modes of communication in each interaction; however, no aided AAC systems were used despite availability. Conclusions Training is urgently required to equip health care providers to (a) incorporate the use of aided AAC strategies during inpatient interactions and (b) increase the active participation of both children with complex communication needs and their parents during these interactions. Abstract
Background In 2020, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) became law in Sweden. This puts extra demands on Swedish health care for children in need. This study aimed to investigate children's experiences and paediatric nurses' experiences of caring in accordance with the UNCRC. Methods Interviews were conducted in 2019 with 10 children and 13 nurses at a paediatric clinic in western Sweden. Child and nurse data were analysed separately with qualitative content analysis. The results are presented as a synthesis of the combined analysis of both data sets. Results Children did not always meet health‐care professionals with the necessary competence to care for them, and they were not always cared for in a child‐friendly environment. Even though nurses in paediatric care had the competence necessary to meet children's rights in health care, organizational issues made it challenging. Providing health care in accordance with the UNCRC principles required time and competence. Sufficient time to help children participate in their care and ensure that they feel secure was considered necessary—regardless of the health‐care context. Conclusion Health‐care encounters without the necessary time or competence can affect children and future encounters negatively. Instruments to safeguard children's rights in health care need to be developed and implemented, such as a documentation system to make children's rights visible and/or UNCRC certification. Implementation of UNCRC principles in all health‐care situations for children as standardized care requires competence, involvement, strong leadership and economic support. Children's voices in research can assist in guiding care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically identify and synthesize peer-reviewed qualitative evidence of the parental experience of hospitalization with a child with Intellectual Disability. SEARCH STRATEGY Key words, synonyms and MeSH subject headings that related to the three key concepts of parental experience, children with Intellectual Disability and hospital settings were applied to six electronic databases: Medline, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science. Titles and abstracts of publications between January 2000 and February 2019 were screened for relevance. INCLUSION CRITERIA Empirical qualitative research involved participants aged 0-18 years, involved children with Intellectual Disability, involved participants hospitalized as an in-patient and involved participants focused on parent perspective. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Data were extracted and synthesized using a meta-narrative approach. RESULTS Eleven publications met the inclusion criteria. Data synthesis revealed three research traditions contributing to this meta-narrative: Paediatric Nursing Practice, Intellectual Disability Healthcare and Patient Experience. A total of five themes were identified: (a) being more than a parent, (b) importance of role negotiation, (c) building trust and relationships, (d) the cumulative effect of previous experiences of hospitalization and (e) knowing the child as an individual. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION This review presents a working model for professional-parent partnership for the safe care of children with Intellectual Disability in hospital. Shifting paediatric healthcare to whole of hospital/multidisciplinary models of care that centre on the child will necessitate partnerships with the parent to identify and manage the needs of the child with Intellectual Disability, in order to achieve safe and equitable care for these children.

Abstract
When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, one of the most challenging tasks facing health-care professionals is how to communicate this to the child, and to their parents or caregivers. Evidence-based guidelines are urgently needed for all health-care settings, from tertiary referral centres in high-income countries to resource limited environments in low-income and middle-income countries, where rates of child mortality are high. We place this Review in the context of children's developing understanding of illness and death. We review the effect of communication on children's emotional, behavioural, and social functioning, as well as treatment adherence, disease progression, and wider family relationships. We consider the factors that influence the process of communication and the preferences of children, families, and health-care professionals about how to convey the diagnosis. Critically, the barriers and challenges to effective communication are explored. Finally, we outline principles for communicating with children, parents, and caregivers, generated from a workshop of international experts.

Abstract
Objective: To identify pediatric patients with sensory sensitivities during a hospital visit, and to implement a clinical pathway that can meet their sensory needs. The goal is to remove barriers to care delivery that is related to the sensory need for pediatric patients who present with an acute medical illness. Methods: The clinical pathway (identified as 'Sensory Pathway') was developed as a joint effort between key stakeholders within the community and medical providers. The pathway was conducted in a tertiary pediatric hospital from September 2016-April 2019. The main components of this pathway included- 1. Staff training; 2. Provision of sensory toolkits and story board; 3. Early collaboration with allied professionals; and 4. Early and continuous parental involvement. The Sensory Pathway was implemented first in the emergency department, followed by inpatient units. Patients triggered the pathway through caregiver or staff identification. Demographic of patients who triggered the pathway was extracted. A detailed qualitative analysis of any parents' feedback received was performed. Results: A cohort of patients with sensory needs was identified amongst pediatric patients who presented to the hospital with an acute illness. The most common comorbidity associated with sensory sensitivity/need was Autism Spectrum Disorder (48%), followed by cerebral palsy (22.8%) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (16%). 1337 patients (51.8%) had a single comorbidity while 45.9% patients had more than one comorbidity. Only 1.3% patients had a known diagnosis of sensory processing disorder. The pathway was triggered in 2,580 patient visits with 1643 patients and 937 repeat visits. The vast majority of patients who triggered the pathway had a medical presenting complaint (vs. behavioral). The following themes emerged from the parents' feedback: 1. Additional help received specific to the child's sensory needs; 2. Feeling of comfort; and 3. Improved overall experience. Conclusion: The Sensory Pathway identified a unique profile of pediatric patients who have sensory needs during their hospital stay. The pathway was successfully implemented for children with sensory need in our hospital across a wide range of demographic and with varied medical illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical encounters for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are stressful to patients, families and health care providers. It is recognized that parents best anticipate needs of children with ASD. Including a family in the plan of care for the child is imperative. In response to the need for targeted, tailored care, an inter-professional surgical services team convened to determine best practices for addressing a behavioral and developmental plan for children with ASD in the surgical services arena. PURPOSE This evidence based practice project was conducted to optimize best practices for perioperative staff in caring for children with ASD through a targeted, individualized plan of care for the autistic child and his or her family. METHODS Psychosocial and medical care strategies were utilized to create a coping plan with standardized questions. The coping plan allowed for tailored interventions specific to each child's needs. CONCLUSION Actively reducing the anxiety a child experiences in a current encounter is paramount to the success of future visits. The coping plan is a formalized summary aimed at helping healthcare providers give individualized care, thereby decreasing the anxiety of both the parent and child. The individualized plan outlines the needs of the patient and allows for the medical team to make adaptations to lessen the stressors a health care visit can present. Plans are shared with the medical team, documented, and updated in the electronic medical record for future encounters. Information captured includes: previous healthcare experiences, sensory sensitivities, communication methods, stressors and coping suggestions. Utilizing best practice, patients are able to receive individualized care to foster positive coping experiences within healthcare.

Abstract
Background Children and young people (CYP) with learning disabilities (LD) are a vulnerable population with increased risk of abuse and accidental injury and whose parents have reported concerns about the quality, safety and accessibility of their hospital care. The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) view of best practice for this group of patients includes: access to senior LD nurse provision; a clearly visible flagging system for identifying them; the use of hospital passports; and defined communication strategies (Glasper, Comp Child Adolesc Nurs 40:63-67, 2017). What remains unclear is whether these recommendations are being applied and if so, what difference they are making. Furthermore, what we do not know is whether parental concerns of CYP with LD differ from parents of other children with long-term conditions. The aims of this study were to 1) describe the organisational context for healthcare delivery to CYP with LD and their families and 2) compare staff perceptions of their ability to identify the needs of CYP with and without LD and their families and provide high quality care to effectively meet these needs. Methods Individual interviews (n = 65) and anonymised online survey (n = 2261) were conducted with hospital staff working with CYP in 15 children’s and 9 non-children’s hospitals in England. The majority of interviews were conducted over the telephone and recorded and transcribed verbatim. Health Research Authority was obtained and verbal or written consent for data collection was obtained from all interview participants. Results The nature and extent of organisational policies, systems and practices in place within hospitals to support the care of CYP with LD differs across England and some uncertainty exists within and across hospitals as to what is currently available and accessed. Staff perceived that those with LD were included less, valued less, and less safe than CYP without LD. They also reported having less confidence, capability and capacity to meet the needs of this population compared to those without LD. Conclusion Findings indicate inequality with regards the provision of high quality hospital care to children and young people with LD that meets their needs. There is a pressing need to understand the impact this has on them and their families. Trial registration The study has been registered on the NIHR CRN portfolio 20461 (Phase 1), 31336 (Phases 2-4). Abstract
BACKGROUND The need to review health service provision for children and young people (CYP) with disabilities and their families in the United Kingdom has been expressed in multiple reports: the most consistent message being that services need to be tailored to meet their individual needs. Our aim was to understand the hospital-related needs and experiences of CYP with intellectual disabilities. METHOD An ethnographic study of a neurosciences ward and outpatient department was conducted within a paediatric tertiary hospital setting. RESULTS Five themes, developed using the acronym LEARN, explained what is important to CYP with intellectual disabilities in hospital: (i) little things make the biggest difference, (ii) eliminate unnecessary waiting, (iii) avoid boredom, (iv) routine and home comforts are key and (v) never assume. CONCLUSIONS It is imperative that the present authors continue to challenge the idea that it is acceptable to exclude CYP with intellectual disabilities from research because of their inability to participate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To deliver quality healthcare to diverse patients, effective commmunication is key. Little evidence exists about what factors influence nurse-to-parent communication in culturally sensitive pediatric care. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore factors that influence nurse-to-parent communication in the provision of culturally sensitive pediatric care. DESIGN This study employed a qualitative content analysis. METHOD The participants included 25 nurses and 9 parents from pediatric wards of hospitals located in Northwest and Central Iran. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman's method of content analysis. RESULTS Factors that influenced the nurse-to-parent communication in pediatric culturally sensitive care were 1-organizational factors (inefficient policies and professional factors) and 2-human factors (nurse-related factors and unique characteristics of the family). Sub-categories included: lack of definitive policies for delivering cultural healthcare, insufficient cultural healthcare education, professional status of nursing in society, time, individual characteristics, cultural knowledge, cultural differences, and family's health literacy. CONCLUSION The Iranian healthcare system requires a paradigm shift regarding the provision of culturally sensitive care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop and test the feasibility of a novel parent-inspired training intervention for hospital ward staff to improve communication with disabled children when inpatients. DESIGN Training content and delivery strategies were informed by the iterative process of Intervention Mapping and developed in collaboration with parents of disabled children. SETTING UK University Hospital children's ward. SUBJECTS 80 medical, nursing, allied health professionals, clerical and housekeeping staff on a children's ward. METHODS Themes identified in previous qualitative research formed the basis of the training. Learning objectives included prioritising communication, cultivating empathy, improving knowledge and developing confidence. Participant feedback was used to refine content and delivery. Intervention documentation adheres to the Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist. RESULTS Highlighting mandated National Health Service policies and involving the hospital Patient and Carer Experience Group facilitated management support for the training. Eighty staff participated in one of four 1-hour sessions. A paediatric registrar and nurse delivered sessions to mixed groups of staff. General feedback was very positive. The intervention, fully documented in a manual, includes videos of parent carers discussing hospital experiences, interactive tasks, small group discussion, personal reflection and intention planning. Generic and local resources were provided. CONCLUSION It was feasible to deliver this new communication training to hospital ward staff and it was positively received. Early feedback was encouraging and indicates a commitment to behaviour change. Further piloting is required to establish the transferability of the intervention to other hospitals, followed by consideration of downstream markers to evaluate the effects on disabled children's inpatient experience. Organisational and cultural change is required to support individual behaviour change.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite evidence of health inequalities for adults with intellectual disability (ID) there has yet to be a comprehensive review of how well hospital services are meeting the needs of children and young people (CYP) with ID and their families. We do not know how relevant existing recommendations and guidelines are to CYP, whether these are being applied in the paediatric setting or what difference they are making. Evidence of parental dissatisfaction with the quality, safety and accessibility of hospital care for CYP with ID exists. However, the extent to which their experience differs from parents of CYP without ID is not known and the views and experiences of CYP with ID have not been investigated. We will compare how services are delivered to, and experienced by CYP aged 5-15 years with and without ID and their families to see what inequalities exist, for whom, why and under what circumstances. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will use a transformative, mixed methods case study design to collect data over four consecutive phases. We will involve CYP, parents and hospital staff using a range of methods; interviews, parental electronic diary, hospital and community staff questionnaire, patient and parent satisfaction questionnaire, content analysis of hospital documents and a retrospective mapping of patient hospital activity. Qualitative data will be managed and analysed using NVivo and quantitative data will be analysed using parametric and non-parametric descriptive statistics. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study will run from December 2015 to November 2018. We have Health Authority Approval (IRAS project ID: 193932) for phase 1 involving staff only and ethical and Health Authority Approval for phases 2-4 (IRAS project ID: 178525). We will disseminate widely to relevant stakeholders, using a range of accessible formats, including social media. We will publish in international peer-reviewed journals and present to professional, academic and lay audiences through national and international conferences.

Abstract
This ethnographic study sought parent, patient and staff views about the needs of children and young people with learning disability and their families during hospitalization. Reported here are data from 27 staff. The need for individualized care was identified, based on gaining appropriate experience and training, identifying the population, focussing on the "little things", creating a safe, familiar environment and accessing and using appropriate resources. Parents played a central role in staff's delivery of individualized care. A lack of staff experience, knowledge and communication about learning disability can mean they rely on parent's input rather than forming a true partnership with them.
