Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify and evaluate psychological interventions or strategies designed to reduce relocation stress in older people making the permanent transition into residential aged care. METHOD A scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was conducted. An electronic search of nine databases and the search engine google scholar was completed in December 2022. Article screening and quality appraisal was undertaken independently by at least two reviewers. RESULTS Eight full-text articles were included for review, from which four psychological interventions were identified: 1) Resident peer support; 2) Life review; 3) Mental Health Service for Older Adults; 4) The Program to Enhance Adjustment to Residential Living. No interventions were implemented before transitioning into care; all were implemented within three months of resident relocation into an aged care facility. CONCLUSION The transition to residential aged care is an inherently distressing experience. The absence of interventions implemented during the pre- and mid-transition phases presents a gap in the literature and suggests an opportunity for early intervention. As population ageing continues to increase, there is a pressing need for the development and implementation of interventions aimed at reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety for older people undertaking this major life transition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify barriers and facilitators to pressure ulcer prevention behaviours in community-dwelling older people and their lay carers. DESIGN Theoretically informed qualitative interviews with two-phase, deductive then inductive, thematic analysis. SETTING The study was conducted in one geographical region in the UK, spanning several community National Health Service Trusts. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling older patients at risk of pressure ulcer development (n=10) and their lay carers (n=10). RESULTS Six themes and subthemes were identified: (1) knowledge and beliefs about consequences (nature, source, timing and taboo); (2) social and professional role and influences (who does what, conflicting advice and disagreements); (3) motivation and priorities (competing self-care needs and carer physical ability); (4) memory; (5) emotion (carer exhaustion and isolation, carergiver role conflict and patient feelings) and (6) environment (human resource shortage and equipment). CONCLUSIONS There is minimal research in pressure ulcer prevention in community-dwelling older people. This study has robustly applied the theoretical domains framework to understanding barriers and facilitators to pressure ulcer prevention behaviours. Our findings will support co-design of strategies to promote preventative behaviours and are likely to be transferable to comparable healthcare systems nationally and internationally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is increasing evidence that co-design can lead to more engaging, acceptable, relevant, feasible, and even effective interventions. However, no guidance is provided on the specific designs and associated methods or methodologies involved in the process. We propose the development of the Preferred Components for Co-design in Research (PRECISE) guideline to enhance the consistency, transparency, and quality of reporting co-design studies used to develop complex health interventions. OBJECTIVE The aim is to develop the first iteration of the PRECISE guideline. The purpose of the PRECISE guideline is to improve the consistency, transparency, and quality of reporting on studies that use co-design to develop complex health interventions. METHODS The aim will be achieved by addressing the following objectives: to review and synthesize the literature on the models, theories, and frameworks used in the co-design of complex health interventions to identify their common elements (components, values or principles, associated methods and methodologies, and outcomes); and by using the results of the scoping review, prioritize the co-design components, values or principles, associated methods and methodologies, and outcomes to be included in the PRECISE guideline. RESULTS The project has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. CONCLUSIONS The collective results of this project will lead to a ready-to-implement PRECISE guideline that outlines a minimum set of items to include when reporting the co-design of complex health interventions. The PRECISE guideline will improve the consistency, transparency, and quality of reports of studies. Additionally, it will include guidance on how to enact or enable the values or principles of co-design for meaningful and collaborative solutions (interventions). PRECISE might also be used by peer reviewers and editors to improve the review of manuscripts involving co-design. Ultimately, the PRECISE guideline will facilitate more efficient use of new results about complex health intervention development and bring better returns on research investments. Abstract
BACKGROUND There are divergent perspectives between midwives and pregnant women on how alcohol consumption during pregnancy could be addressed. Co-creation is an approach where lay people and professionals work together as equal partners, offering the opportunity to bridge the gap. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to evaluate how well we carried out authentic co-creation of an intervention to support midwives have a dialogue about alcohol consumption with pregnant women. PATIENT INVOLVEMENT Recent maternity service users including women with experience of harm due to alcohol during pregnancy provided feedback on the design, conduct and dissemination of the study. METHODS An iterative co-creation approach rooted in participatory research methods was used. Five online workshops were carried out with thirteen midwives and six maternity service users via Zoom July-August 2021. Data were analysed using the core values of co-create as a framework: equality, inclusivity, holistic, resource, positivity, transparency, iterative, and sustainability. RESULTS The co-creation process was productive and rewarding to midwives and maternity service users. There were positive experiences across the co-creation framework with some unintended positive consequences for maternity-service users. DISCUSSION This evaluation provides new knowledge on how well the co-creation process worked in relation to research involving a sensitive topic that can invite stigma. Co-creation projects require generous time and financial resources to ensure a high-quality process and robust outcome for all. PRACTICAL VALUE Co-creation of strategies involving both service providers and service users have potential to facilitate evidence-based practice. Abstract
BACKGROUND Social connection is a fundamental human need. Its absence can lead to loneliness and social isolation, adversely impacting health and well-being. Given their regular contact and trusted relationships with older people, practitioners delivering community-based primary care are well-positioned to address this issue. However, their contribution to addressing loneliness and social isolation is unclear. AIM This integrative review explores the contribution of the primary care workforce to interventions aimed at reducing loneliness and social isolation in community-dwelling older people. METHOD Using an integrative review method, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and PubMed were searched for original research published between 2000 and 2022. Fourteen papers reporting 13 primary studies were appraised for methodological quality and included in the review. Data were extracted into a summary table and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Included studies came from over six countries. Internationally, primary care services have diverse structures, funding and workforces influencing their response to loneliness and social isolation. All but one intervention was multi-component, with ten studies including a group-based activity and three providing primarily individual-level activities. Only six studies reported reductions in loneliness following the intervention. Three themes were identified: characteristics of interventions; implementation context, barriers and facilitators; and differing contributions of primary care practitioners in addressing loneliness and social isolation of older people. CONCLUSION There is increasing demand and scope for primary care practitioners to assist lonely and socially isolated older people. It is important to understand how to equip and incentivise these practitioners to routinely identify, assess and respond to lonely and socially isolated older people despite varying implementation contexts. There is a need for further research that explores how the primary care team can be better utilised to deliver effective interventions that reduce the health impacts of loneliness and social isolation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of using knowledge mobilisation interventions to alter and enhance mindlines and improve childhood eczema care. DESIGN The eczema mindlines study involved three stages: (1) mapping and confirming eczema mindlines, (2) intervention development and delivery and (3) analysis of intervention impact. The focus of this paper is on stage 3. Data analysis was guided by the Social Impact Framework to address the questions: (1) what is the impact of this study on individuals and groups? (2) what changes in behaviour and practice have occurred due to their involvement? (3) what mechanisms have enabled these impacts or changes to occur? and (4) what are the recommendations and questions arising from this research? SETTINGS A deprived inner-city neighbourhood in central England and national/international settings. PARTICIPANTS Patients, practitioners and wider community members exposed to the interventions locally, nationally and internationally. RESULTS Data revealed tangible multi-level, relational and intellectual impacts. Mechanisms supporting impact included: simplicity and consistency of messages adapted to audience, flexibility, opportunism and perseverance, personal interconnectivity and acknowledgement of emotion. Co-created knowledge mobilisation strategies to alter and enhance mindlines mediated through knowledge brokering were effective in producing tangible changes in eczema care practice and self-management and in 'mainstreaming' childhood eczema in positive way across communities. These changes cannot be directly attributed to the knowledge mobilisation interventions, however, the evidence points to the significant contribution made. CONCLUSION Co-created knowledge mobilisation interventions offer a valuable method of altering and enhancing eczema mindlines across lay-practitioner-wider society boundaries. The Social Impact Framework provides comprehensive method of understanding and documenting the complex web of impact occurring as a result of knowledge mobilisation. This approach is transferable to managing other long-term conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is general agreement regarding the relevance of community involvement in public health policy, practice, and research to reduce health inequities. OBJECTIVE This review aims to analyse the experiences of community engagement in public health actions, with particular attention to methodologies used and how community participation is articulated. METHOD AND ANALYSIS We searched the Web of Science, EBSCO, and ProQuest for scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals. We recorded methodological aspects, the approach to equity, actors that participated in the actions, and participation of the community in different phases (agenda setting, design, implementation, and evaluation). RESULTS Of 4331 records, we finally included 31 studies published between 1995 and 2021. Twelve studies referred to Community-Based Participatory Research as the framework used. The actions addressed equity, mainly by tackling economic vulnerability (n = 20, 64%) and racial discrimination (n = 18, 58%). Workshops were the most used method. Participation was frequently observed in the design and implementation phases of the action, but it was reduced to community feedback in the evaluation. CONCLUSIONS Co-created public health actions offer the opportunity to reduce health inequity and promote social change; yet, further effort is needed to involve communities in the entire cycle of decision making.

Abstract
PURPOSE Co-creation is identified as a concept with potential to address many challenges in modern healthcare systems. Its application within stroke rehabilitation is yet to be reviewed. The purpose of this paper is to identify when and how co-creation has been used in the literature to develop services and approaches to stroke survivor care and rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A scoping review was conducted guided by the framework outlined by Arksey and O'Malley. Articles were included if they involved co-creation with stroke survivors and identified co-creation as their methodology to develop post-stroke services. Quality appraisal of included articles was completed. RESULTS The search strategy identified 565 articles. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria. The results demonstrate that co-creation as a methodology to develop stroke rehabilitation services is a contemporary field, producing both technology and non-technology-based interventions, predominately in the community context. Co-creation application was inconsistent, with a plethora of methodologies used, and terminology to describe co-creation varying between the studies. CONCLUSIONS Co-creation in stroke rehabilitation is currently in an expanding and rudimentary phase. This review identified the variability of its application, with future work needed to establish clarity and consistency in terminology and methodologies utilised to operationalise co-creation in stroke rehabilitation.Implications for rehabilitationCo-creation is a contemporary and evolving service improvement approach in stroke rehabilitation, utilised most commonly in the community context.Inconsistent terminology and diverse methodologies are utilised to enact co-creation in stroke rehabilitation.Opportunities exist to advance co-creation in the stroke rehabilitation space through developing consistency in its application, and further investigation into its use with the stroke survivor population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Using the technique of co-production to develop research is considered good practice. Co-production involves the public, practitioners and academics working together as equals throughout a research project. Co-production may help develop alternative ways of delivering care for older adults that are acceptable to those who live and work in care homes. However, guidance about applying co-production approaches in this context is lacking. This scoping review aims to map co-production approaches used in care homes for older adults in previous research to support the inclusion of residents and care staff as equal collaborators in future studies. METHODS A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology. Seven electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed primary studies using co-production approaches in care home settings for older adults. Studies were independently screened against eligibility criteria by two reviewers. Citation searching was completed. Data relating to study characteristics, co-production approaches used, including any barriers and facilitators, was charted by one reviewer and checked by another. Data was summarised using tables and diagrams with an accompanying narrative description. A collaborator group of care home and health service representatives were involved in the interpretation of the findings from their perspectives. RESULTS 19 studies were selected for inclusion. A diverse range of approaches to co-production and engaging key stakeholders in care home settings were identified. 11 studies reported barriers and 13 reported facilitators affecting the co-production process. Barriers and facilitators to building relationships and achieving inclusive, equitable and reciprocal co-production were identified in alignment with the five NIHR principles. Practical considerations were also identified as potential barriers and facilitators. CONCLUSION The components of co-production approaches, barriers and facilitators identified should inform the design of future research using co-production approaches in care homes. Future studies should be explicit in reporting what is meant by co-production, the methods used to support co-production, and steps taken to enact the principles of co-production. Sharing of key learning is required to support this field to develop. Evaluation of co-production approaches, including participants' experiences of taking part in co-production processes, are areas for future research in care home settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide is a major public health risk requiring targeted suicide prevention interventions. The principles of co-production are compatible with tailoring suicide prevention interventions to meet an individual's needs. AIMS This review aimed to evaluate the role and effectiveness of co-produced community-based suicide prevention interventions among adults. METHODS Four electronic databases (PsycInfo, CINAHL, MEDLINE and web of science) were systematically searched. A narrative synthesis was conducted. RESULTS From 590 papers identified through searches, 14 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Most included studies elicited the views and perspectives of stakeholders in a process of co-design/co-creation of community-based suicide prevention interventions. CONCLUSION Stakeholder involvement in the creation of community-based suicide prevention interventions may improve engagement and give voice to those experiencing suicidal crisis. However, there is limited evaluation extending beyond the design of these interventions. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of co-produced community-based suicide prevention interventions. PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT This paper is a systematic review and did not directly involve patients and/or the public. However, the findings incorporate the views and perspectives of stakeholders as reported within the studies included in this review, and the findings may inform the future involvement of stakeholders in the design, development and delivery of community-based suicide prevention interventions for adults.

Abstract
Background The cocreation of eHealth solutions with potential users, or co-design, can help make the solution more acceptable. However, the co-design research approach requires substantial investment, and projects are not always fruitful. Researchers have provided guidelines for the co-design approach, but these are either applicable only in specific situations or not supported by empirical data. Ways to optimize the experience of the co-design process from the point of view of the participants are also missing. Scientific literature in the co-design field generally provides an extrinsic description of the experience of participants in co-design projects. Objective We addressed this issue by describing a co-design project and focusing on the participants’ experiences looking at what was significant from their point of view. Methods We used a qualitative situated cognitive anthropology approach for this study. Data were collected on a co-design research project that aimed to support the help-seeking process of caregivers of functionally dependent older adults. The methodology was based on the perspective of experience by Dewey and used the course-of-action theoretical and methodological framework. Data collection was conducted in 2 phases: observation of participants and recording of sessions and participant self-confrontation interviews using the session recordings. We interviewed 27% (20/74) of the participants. We analyzed the data through nonexclusive emerging categorization of themes using the constant comparative method. Results In total, 5 emerging themes were identified. The perception of extrinsic constraints and the effects of the situation was central and the most important theme, affecting other themes (frustrating interactions with others, learning together, destabilization, and getting personal benefits). Co-occurrences between codes allowed for a visual and narrative understanding of what was significant for the participants during this project. The results highlighted the importance of the role of the research team in preparing and moderating the sessions. They also provided a detailed description of the interactions between participants during the sessions, which is a core aspect of the co-design approach. There were positive and negative aspects of the participants’ experiences during this co-design project. Reflecting on our results, we provided potential affordances to shape the experience of participants in co-design. Conclusions Potential users are an essential component of the co-design research approach. Researchers and designers should seek to offer these users a positive and contributory experience to encourage participation in further co-design initiatives. Future research should explore how the proposed affordances influence the success of the intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Globally, the population is ageing, and more people live in residential care. Best practice in personal hygiene care may reduce distressing and debilitating skin and oral problems and improve resident outcomes. Although there is guidance on personal hygiene care, implementation may be a challenge. AIM To identify barriers and facilitators to delivering personal hygiene care for older persons in residential care settings. METHODS Systematic review reported according to PRISMA 2020 guidance. Databases MEDLINE, CIHAHL and PsychINFO were systematically searched using terms and synonyms 'barriers', 'facilitators', 'hygiene', 'older adults' and 'residential care'. Only empirical studies, reporting everyday skin and oral care, in English, peer reviewed and published from 2000 to 2021 were included. Due to methodological heterogeneity, a narrative synthesis was conducted. RESULTS Sixteen papers yielded nine categories of barrier or facilitator. Five related to skin and oral care: (i) knowledge, (ii) skills relating to hygiene care, (iii) skills relating to supporting 'uncooperative' behaviours, (iv) lack of resources and (v) time, workload and staffing levels. The remainder related only to oral care: (vi) resident, family or carer motivation, (vii) dislike of hygiene care, (viii) carer attitudes and beliefs and (ix) social influences and communication. Six papers reported interventions to optimise care. CONCLUSION This review highlights the persistent dearth of research into everyday personal hygiene practices, in particular skin hygiene in residential care. Existing literature identifies a range of barriers; however, there is a mismatch between these and reported interventions to improve practice. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Advances in implementation science to support optimal care have yet to be applied to interventions to support hygiene practices in care homes and it is imperative this is addressed. Future interventions should involve: (i) systematically and theoretically assessing barriers, (ii) application of tailored behaviour change techniques (iii) using these co-design pragmatic, locally acceptable strategies.

Abstract
Introduction Long‐term benzodiazepine receptor agonist (BZRA) use persists in healthcare settings worldwide and poses risks of patient harm. Objective This study aimed to develop an intervention to support discontinuation of long‐term BZRA use among willing individuals. Methods The intervention development process aligned with the UK Medical Research Council's complex intervention framework. This involved a previous systematic review of brief interventions targeting long‐term BZRA use in primary care and qualitative interviews based on the Theoretical Domains Framework that explored barriers and facilitators to discontinuing long‐term BZRA use. A codesign approach was used involving an active partnership between experts by experience, researchers and clinicians. Intervention content was specified in terms of behaviour change techniques (BCTs). Results The SAFEGUARDING‐BZRAs (Supporting sAFE and GradUAl ReDuctIon of loNG‐term BenZodiazepine Receptor Agonist uSe) toolkit comprises 24 BCTs and includes recommendations targeted at primary care‐based clinicians for operationalizing each BCT to support individuals with BZRA discontinuation. Conclusion The SAFEGUARDING‐BZRAs toolkit has been developed using a systematic and theory‐based approach that addresses identified limitations of previous research. Further research is needed to assess its usability and acceptability by service users and clinicians, as well as its potential to effectively support safe and gradual reduction of long‐term BZRA use. Patient or Public Contribution The qualitative interview phase included patients as participants. The codesign process included ‘experts by experience’ with either current or previous experience of long‐term BZRA use as collaborators.

Abstract
Background In patient care, demand is growing for digital health tools to enable remote services and enhance patient involvement. People with chronic conditions often have multiple health problems, and long-term follow-up is recommended to meet their needs and enable access to appropriate support. A digital tool for previsit preparation could enhance time efficiency and guide the conversation during the visit toward the patient’s priorities. Objective This study aims to develop a digital previsit tool and explore potential end user’s perceptions, using a participatory approach with stroke as a case example. Methods The digital tool was developed and prototyped according to service design principles, informed by qualitative participant data and feedback from an expert panel. All features were processed in workshops with a team that included a patient partner. The resulting tool presented questions about health problems and health information. Study participants were people with stroke recruited from an outpatient clinic and patient organizations in Sweden. Development and data collection were conducted in parallel. For conceptualization, the initial prototype was based on the Post-Stroke Checklist and research. Needs and relevance were explored in focus groups, and we used a web survey and individual interviews to explore perceived utility, ease of use, and acceptance. Data were thematically analyzed following the Framework Method. Results The development process included 22 participants (9 women) with a median age of 59 (range 42-83) years and a median of 51 (range 4-228) months since stroke. Participants were satisfied or very satisfied with using the tool and recommended its use in clinical practice. Three main themes were constructed based on focus group data (n=12) and interviews (n=10). First, valuable accessible information illuminated the need for information to confirm experiences, facilitate responses, and invite engagement in their care. Amendments to the information in turn reconfigured their expectations. Second, utility and complexity in answering confirmed that the questions were relevant and comprehensible. Some participants perceived the answer options as limiting and suggested additional space for free text. Third, capturing needs and value of the tool highlighted the tool’s potential to identify health problems and the importance of encouraging further dialog. The resulting digital tool, Strokehälsa [Strokehealth] version 1.0, is now incorporated into a national health platform. Conclusions The participatory approach to tool development yielded a previsit digital tool that the study group perceived as useful. The holistic development process used here, which integrated health information, validated questions, and digital functionality, offers an example that could be applicable in the context of other long-term conditions. Beyond its potential to identify care needs, the tool offers information that confirms experiences and supports answering the questions in the tool. Abstract
There is increased emphasis on adopting positive health and aging policy goals for heterogeneous older populations, and recognition of the role that participatory research approaches can play in supporting their implementation. However, questions remain about how to represent the marginalized experiences of some older populations within such processes. With a focus on older Irish ethnic Travelers and older homeless adults as two vulnerable populations in Ireland, this article presents and critically discusses a participatory approach developed to integrate marginalized older adult perspectives on positive health and aging in a multistakeholder research and development process. The qualitative methodology is first detailed, incorporating methods that harness collaboratively derived views and individual narratives (e.g., focus groups; consultation forums; in-depth interviews). Critical reflections on research implementation and specific considerations relevant to these populations are presented (e.g., trust building; one-to-one facilitation), with lessons then drawn for the design of multistakeholder participatory approaches with marginalized older populations.

Abstract
Background Previous screening interventions have demonstrated a series of features related to social determinants which have increased uptake in targeted populations, including the assessment of health beliefs and barriers to screening attendance as part of intervention development. Many studies cite the use of theory to identify methods of behaviour change, but fail to describe in detail how theoretical constructs are transformed into intervention content. The aim of this study was to use data from a qualitative exploration of cervical screening in women over 50 in the UK as the basis of intervention co-design with stakeholders using behavioural change frameworks. We describe the identification of behavioural mechanisms from qualitative data, and how these were used to develop content for a service-user leaflet and a video animation for practitioner training. The interventions aimed to encourage sustained commitment to cervical screening among women over 50, and to increase sensitivity to age-related problems in screening among primary care practitioners. Methods Secondary coding of a qualitative data set to extract barriers and facilitators of cervical screening attendance. Barrier and facilitator statements were categorised using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to identify relevant behaviour change techniques (BCTs). Key TDF domains and associated BCTs were presented in stakeholder focus groups to guide the design of intervention content and mode of delivery. Results Behavioural determinants relating to attendance clustered under three domains: beliefs about consequences, emotion and social influences, which mapped to three BCTs respectively: (1) persuasive communication/information provision; (2) stress management; (3) role modelling and encouragement. Service-user stakeholders translated these into three pragmatic intervention components: (i) addressing unanswered questions, (ii) problem-solving practitioner challenges and (iii) peer group communication. Based on (ii), practitioner stakeholders developed a call to action in three areas – clinical networking, history-taking, and flexibility in screening processes. APEASE informed modes of delivery (a service-user leaflet and a cartoon animation for practitioners). Conclusion The application of the TDF to qualitative data can provide an auditable protocol for the translation of qualitative data into intervention content. Abstract
Co-methodological working is gaining increasing traction in healthcare, but studies with older people have been slower to develop. Our aim was to investigate how and how well older people have been engaged in healthcare intervention design, development or delivery using co-methodologies. We conducted a systematic search of four electronic databases to identify international literature published between 2009 and November 2019. We included peer-reviewed empirical research of any design. Three authors screened papers. Our review is reported in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute manual for scoping reviews, we have referred to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement. We data extracted to a bespoke spreadsheet and used the Co:Create Co-production Matrix to guide quality appraisal. Included studies (n = 48) were diverse in nature of interventions, co-methodologies and reporting. We offer a narrative summary of included papers. Establishing how older people were engaged in co-methodological work was largely straightforward. How well this was done was more challenging, however we have identified gems of good practice and offered directions for future practice. The Co:Create Co-Production Matrix was the best fit for evaluating papers, however it is not intended as a measure per se. In essence we argue that notions of 'best' and 'scores' are an oxymoron in co-methodological working, what is important that: (a) researchers embrace these methods, (b) incremental change is the way forward, (c) researchers need to do what is right for people and purpose and (d) have time to consider and articulate why they are choosing this approach and how best this can be achieved for their particular situation. Future evaluation of participant's experience of the process would enable others to learn about what works for who and in what circumstances.
