Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to examine prospective associations of sleep characteristics (duration, timing, quality) with dietary and anthropometric measures among toddlers born preterm (<35 weeks). METHODS Children participated in the Omega Tots trial at 10-17 months' corrected age (Ohio, USA; 26 April 2012 to 6 April 2017). Caregivers reported toddlers' sleep at baseline using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire. After 180 days, caregivers reported toddlers' past month diet in a food frequency questionnaire, and anthropometry was measured using standardised protocols. The toddler diet quality index (TDQI: higher scores indicating better quality), and weight-for-length, triceps skinfold and subscapular skinfold z-scores were calculated. Linear and logistic regression assessed adjusted associations with dietary and anthropometric outcomes at 180-day follow-up (n = 284), and linear mixed models assessed changes in anthropometry. RESULTS Daytime sleep was associated with lower TDQI (βadj per hour = -1.62 (95% CI: -2.71, -0.52)) whereas night-time sleep was associated with higher TDQI (βadj = 1.01 (95% CI: 0.16, 1.85)). Night-time awakenings and caregiver-reported sleep problems were also associated with lower TDQI. Night awakening duration and sleep-onset latency were associated with higher triceps skinfold z-score. CONCLUSION Daytime and night-time caregiver-reported sleep showed opposite associations with diet quality, suggesting that sleep timing may be important.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of feeding to sleep during infancy and subsequent childhood health burdens. STUDY DESIGN Information was collected from the parents of children who participated in the national health screening survey when the child was 9-12 months old. The exposure group included participants who were fed to sleep. The primary outcome was all-cause hospital admission (inpatient care, intensive care unit [ICU] admission, or general anesthesia) after age 24 months. Secondary outcomes were subsequent childhood diseases (ie, adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, acute otitis media, asthma, pneumonia, and aspiration pneumonia), and growth status, as measured by weight-to-age and height-to-age z-scores. RESULTS The study cohort consisted of 224 075 children who participated in the health screening program, 29 392 of whom (13.1%; 51% males) were fed to sleep. Exposure was associated with an increased risk of all-cause hospitalization after age 24 months (hazard ratio [HR], 1.05; 95% CI, 1.03-1.07), but not with admission to an ICU or receipt of general anesthesia. This also was related to adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.01-1.15), dental caries (HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.23-1.40), asthma (HR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.14-1.24), pneumonia (HR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.07-1.13), overweight (HR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.03-1.09), and obesity (HR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06-1.16). CONCLUSIONS Several adverse health outcomes are related to feeding to sleep during early childhood.

Screen Time and Its Association with Vegetables, Fruits, Snacks and Sugary Sweetened Beverages Intake among Chinese Preschool Children in Changsha, Hunan Province: A Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
(1) Introduction: Screen time may influence preschoolers’ food consumption. However, there is limited evidence regarding preschoolers, especially in China. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between screen time and the consumption of vegetables, fruits, snacks, and sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs). (2) Methods: Participants (1567 caregivers) were recruited from six kindergartens in Hunan, China. Caregivers completed the questionnaire, which included the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and questions regarding their children’s daily screen time. (3) Results: The mean screen time of preschoolers was 1.36 ± 1.26 h, and the proportion of children who spent more than one hour on screens was 54.3% in the overall sample. Children with longer screen time consumed vegetables and fruits less frequently, while having a higher consumption of snacks and SSBs. After adjustment of sociodemographic confounders, children’s eating behaviors and parental feeding practices, the association of screen time with vegetables and SSBs still remained significant. (4) Conclusions: Screen time exposure needs to be monitored in preschool children, which was negatively associated with their consumption of vegetables and fruits, whereas it was positively associated with snacks and SSBs. Future research should focus more on the impact of screen time on children’s unhealthy behaviors and dietary patterns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Short sleep duration is related to risk for obesity in preschool children. However, the underlying mechanism(s) are not clear. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the relationship between sleep characteristics with body composition, energetics and weight-regulating behaviors in preschool-aged children; and the longitudinal associations between children's sleep and eating patterns with body composition at 1-year follow-up. METHODS Data were drawn from a longitudinal study of 118 children aged 3-5 years. Sleep (duration, midpoint, regularity) and physical activity (PA) were measured by accelerometry over 6 consecutive days; total energy expenditure (TEE) using the doubly-labeled water method; body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, and %body fat) by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; and dietary intake (energy intake, timing) using two 24-h recalls. Multivariable regression was used to estimate interindividual associations of sleep parameters with body composition, PA, TEE and dietary outcomes; and to examine the relationship between sleep and dietary behaviors with body composition one year later. RESULTS Cross-sectionally, later sleep midpoint was associated with greater fat mass (0.33; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.60) and %body fat (0.92; 95% CI: 0.15, 1.70). Later sleep midpoint was associated with delayed morning (0.51; 95% CI: 0.28, 0.74) and evening meal times (0.41; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.53), higher nighttime (45.6; 95% CI: 19.7, 71.4), and lower morning (-44.8; 95% CI: -72.0, -17.6) energy intake. Longitudinally, shorter sleep duration (-0.02; 95% CI: -0.03, -0.00) and later meal timing (0.83; 95% CI: 0.24, 1.42) were associated with higher %body fat 1 year later. CONCLUSIONS Shorter sleep duration and later meal timing are associated with adiposity gain in preschoolers.

Abstract
Background The i♥rhythm project is a mobile health adaptation of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy designed to promote healthy sleep and behavioral rhythms among 5-8-year olds during summer for the prevention of accelerated summer weight gain. Objective This pilot study will examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the i♥rhythm intervention. This will ensure that the research protocol and procedures work as desired and are acceptable to families in preparation for the fully powered randomized controlled trial. The proposed study will examine the willingness of participants to participate in the intervention and determine whether modifications to the intervention, procedures, and measures are needed before conducting a fully powered study. We will assess our ability to (1) recruit, consent, and retain participants; (2) deliver the intervention; (3) implement the study and assessment procedures; (4) assess the reliability of the proposed measures; and (5) assess the acceptability of the intervention and assessment protocol. Methods This study will employ a single-blinded 2-group randomized control design (treatment and no-treatment control) with randomization occurring after baseline (Time 0) and 3 additional evaluation periods (postintervention [Time 1], and 9 months [Time 2] and 12 months after intervention [Time 3]). A sample of 40 parent-child dyads will be recruited. Results This study was approved by the institutional review board of Baylor College of Medicine (H-47369). Recruitment began in March 2021. As of March 2022, data collection and recruitment are ongoing. Conclusions This study will address the role of sleep and circadian rhythms in the prevention of accelerated summer weight gain and assess the intervention’s effects on the long-term prevention of child obesity. The impact of reducing the frequency of night feeding on infant BMI. Pediatr Res 2022; 91:254-260. Abstract
BACKGROUND Teaching caregivers to respond to normal infant night awakenings in ways other than feeding is a common obesity prevention effort. Models can simulate caregiver feeding behavior while controlling for variables that are difficult to manipulate or measure in real life. METHODS We developed a virtual infant model representing an infant with an embedded metabolism and his/her daily sleep, awakenings, and feeds from their caregiver each day as the infant aged from 6 to 12 months (recommended age to introduce solids). We then simulated different night feeding interventions and their impact on infant body mass index (BMI). RESULTS Reducing the likelihood of feeding during normal night wakings from 79% to 50% to 10% lowered infant BMI from the 84th to the 75th to the 62nd percentile by 12 months, respectively, among caregivers who did not adaptively feed (e.g., adjust portion sizes of solid foods with infant growth). Among caregivers who adaptively feed, all scenarios resulted in relatively stable BMI percentiles, and progressively reducing feeding probability by 10% each month showed the least fluctuations. CONCLUSIONS Reducing night feeding has the potential to impact infant BMI, (e.g., 10% lower probability can reduce BMI by 20 percentile points) especially among caregivers who do not adaptively feed. IMPACT Teaching caregivers to respond to infant night waking with other soothing behaviors besides feeding has the potential to reduce infant BMI. When reducing the likelihood of feeding during night wakings from 79% to 50% to 10%, infants dropped from the 84th BMI percentile to the 75th to the 62nd by 12 months, respectively, among caregivers who do not adaptively feed. Night-feeding interventions have a greater impact when caregivers do not adaptively feed their infant based on their growth compared to caregivers who do adaptively feed. Night-feeding interventions should be one of the several tools in a multi-component intervention for childhood obesity prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the relationship between dietary practices and sleep in young children. METHODS In this study, 2-y-old children (n = 6327) and their mothers were enrolled at birth and during pregnancy, respectively. The study obtained maternal demographic, health, and lifestyle data during late pregnancy. Parents reported the 2-y-old child's dietary practices on a food frequency questionnaire, as well as sleep duration and night-waking frequency. Measures of dietary intake quantified servings per day for each food group (grouped as low/moderate/high intake). Sleep measures were as inadequate sleep when <11 h sleep in a 24-h period and increased night waking when waking ≥2 times per night. Multivariable logistic regression analyses examined associations between toddler diet and sleep, which were described using adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS In this study, 2-y-old children (n = 6288) slept for a mean of 12.3 hours (standard deviation: ±1.5 hours) over a 24-h period, with 734 children (12%) getting <11 h of sleep in 24 h. Increased night waking occurred in 1063 children (17%). Compared with low intake, high soft drink/snack/fast food intake was associated with inadequate sleep (OR: 1.37) and increased night waking (OR: 1.34). High milk/cheese/yoghurt intake (OR: 1.55) was associated with increased odds of night waking, but moderate (OR: 0.81) or high (OR: 0.78) vegetable intake was associated with decreased odds of night waking. Exposure to screens (OR: 1.28) and heavy maternal cigarette smoking (OR: 2.20) were also associated with inadequate sleep and increased night waking, respectively. CONCLUSIONS At age 2 y, higher consumption of soft drinks/snacks/fast foods is associated with shorter, more disrupted sleep. Conversely, higher vegetable consumption is associated with less disrupted sleep. Dietary modifications may improve toddlers' sleep.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine total sleep duration in infancy and the associations of insufficient sleep duration with later weight gain and the risk of overweight in a longitudinal twin cohort study. METHODS The data for this study are from the Longitudinal Twin Study (LoTiS), a twin-pregnancy birth cohort study that was carried out in China (n = 186 pairs). The sleep data were collected at 6 months using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire that was completed by parents with the assistance of a research assistant. Anthropometric data were obtained from the children's health clinic records at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. RESULTS There were no significant differences between infants with insufficient sleep and those with sufficient sleep in terms of height, weight, body mass index, incidence of overweight, and body fat mass, while infants with insufficient sleep duration were predisposed to gain excessive weight from 6 to 12 and 6 to 18 months of age (all P < .05). After adjusting for confounding variables, insufficient sleep duration was found to be correlated with excessive weight gain from 6 to 18 months of age (odds ratio: 3.47; 95% confidence interval, 1.23-9.78). The relationship was more pronounced in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins. CONCLUSIONS Insufficient total sleep duration at the age of 6 months is correlated with the risk of excessive weight gain at 18 months of age in twins, particularly in monozygotic twins. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to summarize correlates of sleep duration in children under 5 years of age. METHODS Six electronic databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus) were searched from inception to May 2019. Observational studies and intervention studies reporting cross-sectional results from baseline data were considered. Data were extracted using a predesigned form and potential correlates were categorized following a sociological framework. RESULTS One-hundred and sixteen studies, representing 329,166 children, met the inclusion criteria, with a high risk of bias in 62 included studies. A total of 83 correlates of sleep duration were identified. Among the associations studied four or more times, correlates of nap duration were child's age and nighttime sleep onset/bedtime; correlates of nighttime sleep duration were household income, parent marital status, parental adiposity level, nighttime sleep duration at younger age, nighttime sleep onset/bedtime, nighttime sleep wakeup time, and frequency of current bedtime routine; correlate of total sleep duration was screen time. CONCLUSIONS Young children from low-income households, single families, or having overweight parents may be at risk for short sleep duration. Promoting healthy sleep duration from an early age appears essential. Effective practices may include encouraging an earlier bedtime, limiting screen time, and establishing a regular bedtime routine. The absence of consistent evidence in the psychological, cognitive, and emotional domain as well as the physical environmental domain warrants further research.

Abstract
PURPOSE Parents find it challenging to follow recommendations to brush young children after feeds at night despite the increase caries risk. This study compared three clinical recommendations (dilution, rinsing and wiping) on plaque pH after formula consumption. METHODS Eighteen subjects were recruited. The five interventions with 2-week washout between visits included: Rinse with undiluted formula for 30 s (UF); rinse with 50% diluted formula for 30 s (DF); rinse with undiluted formula for 30 s, followed by rinsing with water for 1 minute (UF/R); rinse with undiluted formula for 30 s, followed by wiping (UF/W); rinse with 10% sucrose for 30 s as control (C). Plaque samples were collected at baseline, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 min after the intervention and pH measured using the plaque sampling method. RESULTS UF/R resulted in significantly smaller pH drops at 5, 10 and 20 min compared to UF. It also resulted in higher minimum pH (UF/R: 6.34 ± 0.36 Vs UF: 6.06 ± 0.40, p = 0.02), smaller maximum pH drop (UF/R: 0.63 ± 0.35 Vs UF: 0.90 ± 0.49, p = 0.03), smaller sum of change of hydrogen ion concentration (UF/R: 9.22 × 10-7 ± 7.8 × 10-7 Vs UF: 2.30 × 10-6 ± 2.6 × 10-6, p = 0.04), and smaller area under the curve (UF/R: 7.70 ± 5.44 Vs UF: 13.44 ± 9.44, p = 0.02). DF and UF/W did not result in any significant pH change compared to UF. CONCLUSIONS Of the three clinical recommendations, only rinsing with water for 1 min after undiluted formula reduced plaque acidogenicity. Teeth wiping with a moist cloth and 50% dilution of infant formula did not have an effect on plaque acidity.

Abstract
Background Rapid weight gain (RWG) during infancy increases the risk of excess weight later in life. Nutrition- and feeding practices associated with RWG need to be further examined. The present study aimed to examine nutrition- and feeding practice-related risk factors for RWG during the first year of life. Methods A population-based longitudinal birth cohort study of 1780 infants, classified as having RWG or non-RWG during 0–3-4, 0–6 and 6–12 months. RWG was defined as a change > 0.67 in weight standard deviation scores. Associations between nutrition- and feeding practice-related factors and RWG were examined with logistic regression models. Results Of the participating infants, 47% had RWG during 0–3-4 months, 46% during 0–6 months and 8% during 6–12 months. In the fully adjusted models, bottle-feeding at birth and at 3–4 months and nighttime meals containing formula milk were positively associated with RWG during 0–3-4 months (p < 0.05 for all). Breastfeeding at 3–4 months and nighttime meals containing breast milk were negatively associated with RWG during this period (p < 0.001). Bottle-feeding at birth, 3–4 and 6 months and nighttime meals containing formula milk at 3–4 months were positively associated with RWG during 0–6 months (p < 0.01 for all). Breastfeeding at 3–4 and 6 months was negatively associated with RWG (p < 0.01). During 6–12 months, only bottle-feeding at 3–4 months was positively associated with RWG (p < 0.05). Conclusions RWG was more common during the first 6 months of life and bottle-feeding and formula milk given at night were risk factors for RWG during this period. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although insufficient sleep has emerged as a strong, independent risk factor for obesity in children, the mechanisms by which insufficient sleep leads to weight gain are uncertain. Observational research suggests that being tired influences what children eat more than how active they are, but only experimental research can determine causality. Few experimental studies have been undertaken to determine how reductions in sleep duration might affect indices of energy balance in children including food choice, appetite regulation, and sedentary time. The primary aim of this study is to objectively determine whether mild sleep deprivation increases energy intake in the absence of hunger. METHODS The Daily, Rest, Eating, and Activity Monitoring (DREAM) study is a randomized controlled trial investigating how mild sleep deprivation influences eating behaviour and activity patterns in children using a counterbalanced, cross-over design. One hundred and ten children aged 8-12 years, with normal reported sleep duration of 8-11 h per night will undergo 2 weeks of sleep manipulation; seven nights of sleep restriction by going to bed 1 hr later than usual, and seven nights of sleep extension going to bed 1 hr earlier than usual, separated by a washout week. During each experimental week, 24-h movement behaviours (sleep, physical activity, sedentary behaviour) will be measured via actigraphy; dietary intake and context of eating by multiple 24-h recalls and wearable camera images; and eating behaviours via objective and subjective methods. At the end of each experimental week a feeding experiment will determine energy intake from eating in the absence of hunger. Differences between sleep conditions will be determined to estimate the effects of reducing sleep duration by 1-2 h per night. DISCUSSION Determining how insufficient sleep predisposes children to weight gain should provide much-needed information for improving interventions for the effective prevention of obesity, thereby decreasing long-term morbidity and healthcare burden. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Short sleep duration and poor dietary habits may contribute to increased adiposity; however, the impact of the interaction between these variables on adiposity is less understood. To evaluate research investigating the combined effects of sleep and diet on adiposity in infants, toddlers, and young children. METHODS Systematic searches of electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science) from inception through April 2017 were conducted. All studies published in English that had at least 1 sleep (e.g., sleep duration and night awakenings), diet (e.g., 24-hour diet recall and breastfeeding duration), and adiposity (e.g., body mass index z-score and weight-for-length) measure were eligible for inclusion. Abstract and full-text article reviews were conducted by 2 independent reviewers. Data were extracted into a standardized spreadsheet. RESULTS Of the 17 full-text articles reviewed, 14 studies were included. Mediation (n = 2) and moderation (n = 2) were seldom used. Investigation of the combined effects of sleep and diet on adiposity demonstrated a substantial lack of evidence. Synthesis of articles suggests that the relationship between sleep and diet may be interactive and their effects additive in their impact when targeted simultaneously within interventions. CONCLUSION Without consideration of interaction effects among variables of interest, a substantial gap in the literature persists. Both diet and sleep need to be assessed simultaneously and repetitively in future longitudinal research.

Abstract
High protein intake in young children is associated with excess gains in weight and body fat, but the specific role of different protein sources has yet to be described. The study aimed to investigate the role of different types of protein in the post-weaning stage on weight, BMI and overweight/obesity at 60 months. Intakes of animal, dairy and plant protein and a dietary pattern characterising variation in protein types at 21 months of age were estimated using a 3-d diet diary in a cohort of 2154 twins; weight and height were recorded every 3 months from birth to 60 months. Longitudinal mixed-effect models investigated the associations between sources of protein intake or dietary pattern scores and BMI, weight and overweight/obesity from 21 months up to 60 months. Adjusting for confounders, dairy protein intake at 21 months was positively associated with greater weight (46 (95 % CI 21, 71) g and BMI up to 60 months (0·04 (95 % CI 0·004, 0·070) kg/m2) and the odds of overweight/obesity at 3 years (OR 1·12; 95 % CI 1·00, 1·24). Milk showed associations of similar magnitude. A dietary pattern low in dairy protein and high in plant protein was associated with lower weight gain up to 60 months, but not overweight/obesity. Intake of dairy products in early childhood is most strongly associated with weight gain, compared with other protein sources. A dietary pattern characterised by lower protein intake and greater protein source diversity at 2 years may confer a lower risk of excess weight gain.

Abstract
This paper presents a conceptual model and reviews the empirical evidence to support a nightly bedtime routine as a key factor in the promotion of not only healthy sleep, but also of broad development and wellbeing in early childhood. A bedtime routine embodies the characteristics of nurturing care and early child stimulation, which are deemed to be essential for positive outcomes, especially for at-risk children. Furthermore, common, adaptive components of a bedtime routine can contribute to an array of positive developmental outcomes beyond improved sleep, inclusive of language development, literacy, child emotional and behavioral regulation, parent-child attachment, and family functioning, among other outcomes. These bedtime routine components include activities in the broad domains of nutrition (e.g., feeding, healthy snack), hygiene (e.g., bathing, oral care), communication (e.g., reading, singing/lullabies) and physical contact (e.g., massage, cuddling/rocking). A bedtime routine can provide multiple benefits to child and family functioning at a time of day that many parents are present with their children. Although additional research on hypothesized routine-related child outcomes and mechanisms of action are needed, promoting a bedtime routine may be a feasible and cost-effective method to promote positive early childhood development worldwide, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged and other at-risk young children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A short sleep duration is associated with a higher obesity risk from midchildhood onward. However, whether sleep duration in early childhood is associated with body composition and cardiometabolic health remains unclear. This study aims to examine the prospective association of sleep duration in infancy and early childhood with body composition and cardiometabolic health at 6 years of age. METHODS Data were available for 5161 children from a population-based cohort in the Netherlands. Sleep duration was assessed at ages 2, 6, 24, and 36 months by parental reports. When children were 6 years old, measures of body composition (iDXA), blood pressure, insulin, and lipid levels were collected. Longitudinal associations among sleep duration, body composition, and cardiometabolic health were studied with multivariable linear regression analyses. In addition, potential bidirectional associations between sleep duration and BMI were studied by using cross-lagged modeling. RESULTS Shorter sleep duration at 2 months predicted higher BMI and fat mass in 6-year-old children, accounting for confounders and BMI at 2 months (e.g., for BMI, per hour sleep, B = -0.018, 95% CI = -0.026; -0.009). No temporal relationships among sleep duration at other ages, later body composition, and cardiometabolic outcomes were found. The cross-lagged model indicated a bidirectional association between sleep duration and BMI in early life (2 to 6 months of age). CONCLUSIONS Shorter sleep duration at 2 months, but not at later ages, predicted poorer body composition 6 years later. We found no clear evidence for an effect of sleep duration in early life on cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Childhood obesity is a growing health concern for Korean-Americans (KA). The purpose of this study was to develop a culturally appropriate Korean-language version of the Family Nutrition Physical Activity (FNPA) instrument and evaluate its comprehensibility and cultural appropriateness of the FNPA for KAs. DESIGN AND METHODS The FNPA was translated into Korean and cognitive interviews were conducted with 19 KA mothers in the Chicago metropolitan area. RESULTS Overall, participants reported that the FNPA is easy to understand and said they had no difficulty answering items using a 4-point Likert scale. Six out of 20 items had minor revisions due to: items that were not specific enough, had confusing wording, or led to incorrect interpretations. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive interviews confirmed the cultural appropriateness of the translated FNPA in the KA context. It is crucial that child's age and cultural aspects of a child's household routines should be taken into consideration when the original FNPA is being used with culturally diverse populations. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Health care professionals may use the FNPA when assessing family environment in their efforts to prevent and control childhood obesity among KAs.

Abstract
Early life nutrition and feeding practices are important modifiable determinants of subsequent obesity, yet little is known about the circadian feeding pattern of 12-month-old infants. We aimed to describe the 24-h feeding patterns of 12-month-old infants and examine their associations with maternal and infant characteristics. Mothers from a prospective birth cohort study (n 431) reported dietary intakes of their 12-month-old infants and respective feeding times using 24-h dietary recall. Based on their feeding times, infants were classified into post-midnight (00.00-05.59 hours) and pre-midnight (06.00-23.59 hours) feeders. Mean daily energy intake was 3234 (sd 950) kJ (773 (sd 227) kcal), comprising 51·8 (sd 7·8) % carbohydrate, 33·9 (sd 7·2) % fat and 14·4 (sd 3·2) % protein. Mean hourly energy intake and proportion of infants fed were lower during post-midnight than pre-midnight hours. There were 251 (58·2 %) pre-midnight and 180 (41·8 %) post-midnight feeders. Post-midnight feeders consumed higher daily energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein intakes than pre-midnight feeders (all P<0·001). The difference in energy intake originated from energy content consumed during the post-midnight period. Majority (n 173) of post-midnight feeders consumed formula milk during the post-midnight period. Using multivariate logistic regression with confounder adjustment, exclusively breast-feeding during the first 6 months of life was negatively associated with post-midnight feeding at 12 months (adjusted OR 0·31; 95 % CI 0·11, 0·82). This study provides new insights into the circadian pattern of energy intake during infancy. Our findings indicated that the timing of feeding at 12 months was associated with daily energy and macronutrient intakes, and feeding mode during early infancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diet is a modifiable factor associated with pediatric obesity outcomes, but few studies have evaluated the relationships of sleep duration and regularity on dietary intake of young preschool-aged children. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether short sleep duration and irregular sleep timing were associated with greater calorie, carbohydrate and fat consumption among young children with obesity from low-income families. METHODS Fifty-one ethnically diverse children aged 2 to 4 years were recruited from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children clinics in a southeast Texas county. Sleep behaviors were parent reported using the Child Sleep Assessment tool. Dietary intake data were obtained by 24-hour recall interviews (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day). RESULTS Short sleep duration (<11 hr) was highly prevalent among this cohort of preschool-aged children. Short sleep duration was associated with greater fat and decreased carbohydrate consumption. Children with greater variability in sleep duration and timing had greater energy intake from fat and protein sources. CONCLUSION Allowing for the opportunity to educate parents on the importance of maintaining regular, adequate sleep and relationships between sleep and dietary intake may decrease the risk of childhood obesity in this high-risk pediatric population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obese adults have a higher risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA); however, the relationship between childhood obesity and adult OSA risk is unclear. Objectives This study aimed to examine overweight/obesity (OW) in childhood and risk of OSA in middle age. METHODS Childhood OW status was classified as never OW, weight cycling, persistent OW and incident OW. After 35 years of follow-up, high risk for OSA was determined by a positive score in ≥2 domains on the Berlin Questionnaire with obesity removed from scoring. RESULTS At initial assessment, mean (SD) age was 9.9 (2.9) years, and 23.9% were OW. Overall, 25.7% had scores indicating a high risk for OSA. Compared with participants who were never OW, those with persistent OW and incident OW were 1.36 (95%CI: 1.04-1.77) and 1.47 (1.11-1.96) times more likely to be high risk for OSA, after adjustment for multiple risk factors and adult OW status. Participants with an OW duration of 1-4 years, 5-8 years, and 8+ years were 0.96 (0.44-2.09), 1.20 (0.70-2.04) and 1.52 (1.22-1.90) times more likely to be high risk for OSA compared with those who were never OW (P for trend: 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that childhood OW is associated with a high risk of OSA in middle age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Inadequate sleep during infancy is associated with adverse outcomes for infants and families. We sought to improve sleep behaviors and duration through a responsive parenting (RP) intervention designed for obesity prevention. METHODS The Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) study is a randomized trial comparing a RP intervention with a safety control. Primiparous mother-newborn dyads were randomized after childbirth, and research nurses delivered intervention content at home visits at infant ages 3, 16, 28, and 40 weeks and at a research center visit at 1 year. The RP sleep component included developmentally appropriate messages about bedtime routines, sleep location and behaviors, and responses to wakings. Portions of the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire were administered 2, 8, and 52 weeks after birth with expanded sleep-related data collection at 16 and 40 weeks. RESULTS Two hundred and seventy-nine dyads completed the first home visit; 90.7% completed the 1-year visit. Compared with controls, RP group infants were less likely to have prolonged bedtime routines >45 minutes and more likely to have earlier bedtimes at 16 and 40 weeks. They were less likely to be fed immediately before bed and more likely to self-soothe to sleep. At 8, 16, and 40 weeks, RP group nocturnal sleep duration was longer by 35, 25, and 22 minutes, respectively (P < .05 for all). Sleep duration at 1 year was similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS The INSIGHT RP intervention positively influenced developmentally appropriate bedtime routines, sleep-related behaviors, and sleep duration for infants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shorter sleep is a risk factor for weight gain in young children. Experimental studies show that sleep deprivation is associated with higher nighttime energy intake, but no studies have examined the patterning of energy intake in relation to nighttime sleep duration in young children. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study were to test the hypothesis that shorter-sleeping children would show higher nighttime energy intake and to examine whether the additional calories were from drinks, snacks or meals. METHODS Participants were 1278 families from the Gemini twin cohort, using data from one child per family selected at random to avoid clustering effects. Nighttime sleep duration was measured at 16 months of age using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire. Energy intake by time of day and eating episode (meal, snack, drink) were derived from 3-day diet diaries completed when children were 21 months. RESULTS Consistent with our hypothesis, shorter-sleeping children consumed more calories at night only (linear trend P < 0.001), with those sleeping <10 h consuming on average 120 calories (15.2% of daily intake) more at night than those sleeping ≥13 h. The majority of nighttime intake was from milk drinks. Associations remained after adjusting for age, sex, birth weight, gestational age, maternal education, weight and daytime sleep. CONCLUSIONS Shorter-sleeping, young children consume more calories, predominantly at night, and from milk drinks. Parents should be aware that providing milk drinks at night may contribute to excess intake. This provides a clear target for intervention that may help address associations between sleep and weight observed in later childhood.

Abstract
Background: Higher food intake is implicated in the elevated risk of obesity associated with shorter sleep in children, but the mechanisms driving higher intake are uncertain. Research in adults suggests that acute sleep deprivation affects brain reward systems, which increases responsiveness to palatable foods. However, there have been few studies addressing habitual sleep duration, and few in children, among whom the strongest associations with body mass index (BMI) are seen. Objective: The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that shorter-sleeping children are more food responsive and explore the mediation of the relationship between sleep and weight by food responsiveness (FR). Methods: Participants were families from Gemini, a UK twin birth cohort, who had provided complete information on their children's sleep and appetite at age 5 years (n=1008). One child from each twin pair was randomly selected for analyses. Nighttime sleep duration was calculated from parent-reported bedtime and wake time, and categorised as shorter, adequate or longer according to age-specific reference values. FR was assessed with the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. BMI s.d. scores (BMI-SDS) were calculated from parent-measured heights and weights using the UK 1990 reference data and were available for 494 children. Results: There was a significant linear association between shorter sleep and higher FR at age 5 years (P for linear trend=0.032), which was maintained after adjusting for age, sex, birth weight, maternal education and BMI-SDS. In the subset with BMI data at age 5 years, shorter sleep was associated with higher BMI-SDS (P=0.026) as expected. Testing for mediation by adding FR to the model attenuated the linear relationship to borderline significance (P=0.049), suggesting partial mediation. Conclusions: Shorter sleep in childhood is associated with higher FR, which may partly explain the association between shorter sleep and adiposity in childhood.
