Abstract
Nanotechnology has shown great promise for researchers to develop efficient nanocarriers for better therapy, imaging, and sustained release of drugs. The existing treatments are accompanied by serious toxicity limitations, leading to severe side effects, multiple drug resistance, and off-target activity. In this regard, nanogels have garnered significant attention for their multi-functional role combining advanced therapeutics with imaging in a single platform. Nanogels can be functionalized to target specific tissues which can improve the efficiency of drug delivery and other challenges associated with the existing nanocarriers. Translation of nanogel technology requires more exploration towards stability and enhanced efficiency. In this review, we present the advances and challenges related to nanogels for cancer therapy, ophthalmology, neurological disorders, tuberculosis, wound healing, and anti-viral applications. A perspective on recent research trends of nanogels for translation to clinics is also discussed.

Abstract
Craniotomy, an essential neurosurgical operation, poses distinct difficulties in the realm of post-operative care, specifically with regard to the management of wounds. Efficient wound management is critical in order to optimize the surgical outcomes, reduce complications and facilitate a speedier recovery. The purpose of this comprehensive review was to assess contemporary wound management approaches as they pertain to improved recovery following craniotomy. This was achieved by contrasting conventional methods with more recent and innovative techniques and analysing the effects of these approaches on patient recovery and surgical results. An exhaustive literature search was undertaken, comprising narrative reviews, clinical studies, peer-reviewed articles and expert opinions. The emphasis was on the evolution of wound management strategies and techniques utilized after cranial section, as well as their contributions to patient recovery. The analysis reveals that while conventional wound management methods, including suturing and antiseptics, continue to be essential, innovative strategies such as negative pressure wound therapy, skin adhesives and advanced pain management protocols are becoming increasingly recognized. It has been demonstrated that these novel approaches improve recovery by decreasing the incidence of infections, enhancing patient comfort and producing superior cosmetic results. Nevertheless, obstacles continue to endure, including patient-specific variables, technological and financial considerations and the enduring consequences of recovery. Thus the treatment of wounds during craniotomy recuperation necessitates an integrated strategy that incorporates conventional techniques alongside contemporary advancements. Progress in this domain necessitates the customization of approaches to suit the unique requirements of each patient, the resolution of identified obstacles and an emphasis on ongoing investigation and interdisciplinary cooperation. The ever-changing terrain of wound management approaches underscores the ever-changing character of neurosurgical treatment and the continuous endeavour to enhance patient results following cranial resection.

Abstract
Chronic wound-associated pain negatively impacts the quality of life of individuals and their families. To date, little research exists that has explored collectively how individuals describe wound pain, strategies they use to manage pain, and the perceived effectiveness of such strategies. Therefore, qualitative, semi-structured interviews were carried out between June and August 2021 with 13 individuals to gain a deeper understand of the experience and impact of chronic wound-associated pain in this population. Data were analyzed following Braun and Clarke's approach for reflexive thematic analysis using MAXQdA®. Two themes and subthemes were identified. Theme 1 reflects participants' characterization of pain and how wound-associated pain affected their daily life and how they learned to accept it. Participants felt functionally impaired. In theme 2, participants described how they accepted to live with such a pain even though they received support to manage their chronic wound-associated pain, especially during the dressing-changes. Patients depended on their health care professionals and family support networks to cope with the pain. Coping with pain is exhausting contributing to poorer quality of life. Health care professionals should be aware of wound-associated pain during dressing changes. Patients recommended the need for further research on dressings and not drugs to manage pain.

Abstract
Robust and predictive pre-clinical models of recalcitrant diabetic wounds are critical for advancing research efforts toward improving healing. Murine models have logistic and genetic benefits versus larger animals; however, native murine healing inadequately represents clinically recalcitrant wounds in humans. Furthermore, current humanization techniques employing devices, deleterious mutations or chemical agents each carry model-specific limitations. To better replicate human wounds in a mouse, we developed a novel wound-edge inversion (WEI) technique that mimics the architecture of epibole and mitigates contracture, epithelialization, and consequently wound closure. In this study, we evaluated the reliability and durability of the WEI model in wild-type and obese diabetic mice and compared to healing after (i) punch biopsy, (ii) mechanical/silicone stenting or (iii) exogenous oxidative stressors. In wild-type mice, WEI demonstrated favourable closure characteristics compared to both control and stented wounds, however, wounds progressed to closure by 4 weeks. In contrast, diabetic WEI wounds persisted for 6-10 weeks with reduced contracture and epithelialization. In both diabetic and wild-type mice, WEI sites demonstrated persistence of inflammatory populations, absence of epithelialization, and histologic presence of alpha-SMA positive granulation tissue when compared to controls. We conclude that the WEI technique is particularly valuable for modelling recalcitrant diabetic wounds with sustained inflammation and dysfunctional healing.

Abstract
The assessment and management of impaired skin integrity as part of wound care is a common nursing task. Specific wound assessment tools may assist nurses to structure an assessment, but wider holistic factors also need to be considered. The TIMERS (tissue, inflammation and infection, moisture balance, edge, repair and regeneration, and social factors) tool offers a flexible approach to assessing wounds holistically and can be applied in all wound aetiologies. This article provides nurses with an overview of the assessment and management of impaired skin integrity using the TIMERS tool. It also discusses the importance of shared decision-making between nurses and patients when formulating a wound care regimen.

Abstract
Recently, bioelectronic devices extensively researched and developed through the convergence of flexible biocompatible materials and electronics design that enables more precise diagnostics and therapeutics in human health care and opens up the potential to expand into various fields, such as clinical medicine and biomedical research. To establish an accurate and stable bidirectional bio-interface, protection against the external environment and high mechanical deformation is essential for wearable bioelectronic devices. In the case of implantable bioelectronics, special encapsulation materials and optimized mechanical designs and configurations that provide electronic stability and functionality are required for accommodating various organ properties, lifespans, and functions in the biofluid environment. Here, this study introduces recent developments of ultra-thin encapsulations with novel materials that can preserve or even improve the electrical performance of wearable and implantable bio-integrated electronics by supporting safety and stability for protection from destruction and contamination as well as optimizing the use of bioelectronic systems in physiological environments. In addition, a summary of the materials, methods, and characteristics of the most widely used encapsulation technologies is introduced, thereby providing a strategic selection of appropriate choices of recently developed flexible bioelectronics.

Abstract
The expansion of primary care wound services serves to alleviate secondary and tertiary care utilization. However, patient satisfaction is required to ensure service uptake. In recent years, various community pharmacies in Australia have begun to offer dedicated wound clinics; however, evaluations of patient experiences have yet to be conducted. Thus, the present study seeks to explore: (1) the experiences and satisfaction of patients who have received wound care consultations for their acute wounds in a community pharmacy setting; and (2) how current pharmacy-based wound services can be improved. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with patients across five pharmacy-based wound care clinics in Western Australia. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and imported into QSR NVivo 12 Plus. Interview transcripts were coded and thematically analyzed using the framework method. Twelve interviews were required to reach data saturation. Five key themes emerged: the accessibility of wound services, the comprehensiveness of wound care services, confidence in wound care consultants, the awareness and promotion of wound services, and the expansion of wound care services. Overall, participants were satisfied with the accessibility and comprehensiveness of pharmacy-based wound service delivery, trusted the health care providers, and wanted the service to be expanded. The reported patient satisfaction, confidence in the health care provider, and desire to expand the service suggests there is potential for the service to grow in Australia. Due to the growing costs of wound care globally, there is scope to further evaluate and expand wound care services in the primary care setting on an international level.

Abstract
Following the healing of venous leg ulcers, the primary problems for nursing and patients are adhering to compression therapy and preventing ulcer recurrence. As a result, it is important that patients comprehend their situation. The purpose of this study is to see how an educational nursing intervention affected compression therapy adherence and recurrence of venous leg ulcers in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers. A quasi-experimental design was used, including an intervention, a control group, and before and after assessments. This study was conducted in one of Egypt's largest teaching hospitals associated with Menoufia University. The 20-month study included 80 adult patients with healed venous leg ulcers. Each participant was randomized to either a control (got regular leg ulcer information) or study (received educational interventions) group. The following tools were used in the study: bio-sociodemographic variables, knowledge evaluation, compression therapy adherence scale, and recurrence follow-up, after 3, 6, and 12 months of implementation. Furthermore, there is a statistically significant difference between the study groups during the pretest (r = 0.885, 0.774, and 0.477, p = 0.002). The use of nursing education increased patients' understanding and adherence to compression treatment substantially. As a consequence, those with chronic venous leg ulcers may be able to avoid recurrent venous leg ulcers.

Abstract
Human epithelia are constantly exposed to microorganisms present in the environment or residing as part of commensal flora. Despite this exposure, infections involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue in healthy individuals are, fortunately, quite rare. Many of the wounds that afflict the human body occur in individuals of ill health and/or where the mechanism of wounding is impeded by host immunological, physiological or regenerative dysfunction. The interplay between microorganisms and host immunity is complex and remains ill defined; however, the interpretation of downstream manifestations of the host response to invading microorganisms is still based largely on the clinical signs and symptoms of an active infectious process. In this review article we will provide a brief overview of the current challenges clinicians face in diagnosing wound infections, how chronic infections caused by biofilms are a major challenge, and how there have been minimal advancements in developing new diagnostics or therapeutics in the identification and management of wound infections.

Abstract
Chronic wounds are a major healthcare issue and can adversely affect the lives of millions of patients around the world. The current wound management strategies have limited clinical efficacy due to labor-intensive lab analysis requirements, need for clinicians' experiences, long-term and frequent interventions, limiting therapeutic efficiency and applicability. The growing field of flexible bioelectronics enables a great potential for personalized wound care owing to its advantages such as wearability, low-cost, and rapid and simple application. Herein, recent advances in the development of wearable bioelectronics for monitoring and management of chronic wounds are comprehensively reviewed. First, the design principles and the key features of bioelectronics that can adapt to the unique wound milieu features are introduced. Next, the current state of wound biosensors and on-demand therapeutic systems are summarized and highlighted. Furthermore, we discuss the design criteria of the integrated closed loop devices. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges in wearable bioelectronics for wound care are discussed.

Abstract
AIM To explore the extent of patients that choose to cease Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) prematurely in a clinical setting, and to explore the determinants of nonadherence. METHOD This study exists out of: (1) a retrospective study to assess the number of patients who ceased NPWT prematurely; (2) a narrative review (NR) to identify determinants of nonadherence; and (3) a survey among wound care specialists to explore specific determinants of nonadherence to NPWT. RESULTS (1) Based on the retrospective study, 20% ceased NPWT prematurely because of experienced limitations in daily activities. (2) Based on 22 studies, 23 determinants that might influence nonadherence were identified and added as questions in the survey. (3) Twenty-two percent (n = 136) wound care specialists completed the survey. Confidence with the healthcare team, consistency in therapy advices, coping with pain, former negative experiences with NPWT, a normal activity pattern, social support from family or friends, and support from the healthcare team were identified as highly relevant determinants of nonadherence to NPWT. Only religion scored distinctively lower. CONCLUSION This study is a first step in exploring the determinants of nonadherence to NPWT. In 20% NPWT was prematurely ceased at the request of the patient, this means that this therapy may have not been the best choice of therapy for this particular patient. The identification of potential determinants of nonadherence may help healthcare professionals in their dialogue with patients. The next step should be a prognostic study to assess which determinants best predict adherence to NPWT.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to explore the occurrence of venous leg ulcer recurrence and the relationship with self-efficacy, social support and quality of life. Furthermore, we investigated the lived experiences of those patients and their understanding of why they developed a recurrence. DESIGN We used a convergent parallel mixed method design consisting of a cohort and an interpretative phenomenological study arm. METHODS Consecutive patients (N = 145) were recruited into the study. Between 2014 and 2018, three primary care centres took part in the study. Data collection methods included chart review, administered questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. RESULTS The incidence of the venous leg ulcer recurrence was 33.1% within the study period. The scores for self-efficacy, social support and venous leg ulcer health-related quality of life show little variation between all measurement points and within subgroups. The qualitative findings identified two main themes: accidentally damaging the skin and avoiding venous leg ulcer recurrences. Venous leg ulcer recurrences frequently arose from accidents. Therefore, participants developed strategies to avoid additional ulcers. CONCLUSION To optimize recurrence prevention, improvements in knowledge of people with VLUs should be considered. IMPACT A mixed method, convergent, parallel design was used to explore the occurrence of venous leg ulcer recurrence and the relation of a venous leg ulcer recurrence with self-efficacy, social support and health-related quality of life. As well as the lived experiences of venous leg ulcer patients and why they developed a recurrence. The incidence of venous leg ulcer recurrences within the study period was 33.1%. Damaging the skin and avoiding a recurrence were the main identified themes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Venous leg ulcers (VLUs), the most common type of leg ulcerations, have long healing times and high recurrence rates; reimbursement rules and a general shortage of nursing staff have put self-treatment into focus. The study aimed to investigate why and how patients with VLUs self-treat their ulcers. METHODS Patients with VLUs (N = 32) were selected by criterion sampling for a multicentric qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed via inductive qualitative content analysis. RESULTS More than two-thirds of participants sometimes self-treated VLU and one quarter changed their prescribed treatment. Experiences were expressed through four themes as follows: (a) current local VLU therapy; (b) VLU self-treatment; (c) patient education; and (d) psychosocial issues. The main reasons for self-treatment were a lack of healthcare resources, reimbursement restrictions, and dissatisfaction with conventional treatment together with insufficient knowledge about the wound-healing process and possible side effects. No educational materials were provided for patients or caregivers. Many patients adopted homemade remedies. CONCLUSION Patients with VLUs practice self-care due to limited healthcare availability, a low awareness of the causes of their condition, and the effects of therapy on VLU healing. Future educational intervention is needed to enhance self-treatment.
