Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) are thought to impact carcinogenesis by affecting cell signaling. A case-control study including 250 patients with urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) and 250 controls was conducted. Plasma FAs composition was assessed using capillary gas chromatography. Associations of individual and classes of FAs with UBC were controlled for the main risk factors for UBC. Plasma FAs profile was different in patients compared to controls. Higher levels (third tertile vs. first tertile) in palmitic acid (PA) [multi-adjusted OR (95% CI), 1.83 (1.14-2.92)], and n - 6:n - 3 FA ratio [4.13 (2.38-7.16)] were associated with increased risk for UBC [multi-adjusted OR (95% CI), 1.83 (1.14-2.92)]. In contrast, higher levels (third tertile vs. first tertile) in oleic [0.54 (0.34-0.86)], dihomo-γ-linolenic (DGLA) [0.47 (0.29-0.74)], eicosapentaenoic (EPA) [0.32 (0.19-0.52)], and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids [0.33 (0.20-0.53)] were associated with lower risk for UBC. Although the study design does not allow proving causality, the findings suggest a possible protective role of oleic acid and marine n - 3 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) against bladder carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Aims The aim of this study was to determine non-occupational risk factors for bladder cancer in Serbia. Methods and design A hospital-based, case-control study included 130 newly diagnosed bladder cancer patients and the same number of individually matched controls with respect to sex, age (± 2 years) and type of residence (rural or urban), from the Clinical Center of Serbia in Belgrade and from the Clinical Center in Kragujevac in central Serbia. The study took place from June 1997 to March 1999. Results According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, there was an association between: frequency of daily urination (OR = 0.18; 95% CI = 0.08-0.39); consumption of liver (OR = 13.81; 95% CI = 2.49-76.69), canned meat (OR = 8.38; 95% CI = 1.74-40.36), fruit juices (OR = 0.08; 95% CI = 0.01-0.56); the highest fertile of pork (OR = 4.55; 95% CI = 1.30-15.93), cabbage (OR = 0.25; 95% CI = 0.06-1.01) and vinegar (OR = 4.41; 95% CI = 1.18-16.50) intake and risk for bladder cancer. Conclusions Consumption of liver, canned meat, pork (h vs I tertile) and vinegar (m vs I tertile) was indicated as a risk factor for bladder cancer, whereas frequent daily urination, consumption of fruit juices and cabbage (h vs I fertile) were indicated as protective factors.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested that dietary factors may be important in the development of bladder cancer. We examined macronutrient intake in relation to risk of urothelial cell carcinoma among 469,339 men and women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. Associations were examined using Cox regression, stratified by sex, age at recruitment and centre and further adjusted for smoking status and duration, body mass index and total energy intake. After an average of 11.3 years of follow-up, 1,416 new cases of urothelial cell carcinoma were identified. After allowing for measurement error, a 3% increase in the consumption of energy intake from animal protein was associated with a 15% higher risk (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3-30%; p(trend) = 0.01) and a 2% increase in energy from plant protein intake was associated with a 23% lower risk (95% CI: 36-7%, p(trend) = 0.006). Dietary intake of fat, carbohydrate, fibre or calcium was not associated with risk. These findings suggest that animal and/or plant protein may affect the risk of urothelial cell carcinoma, and examination of these associations in other studies is needed.

Abstract
The modifying potential of diacylglycerol (DAG) oil on tumor development was investigated in a medium-term multi-organ carcinogenesis bioassay. DAG oil is a cooking oil that contains >80% diglycerides, <20% triglycerides and <5% monoglycerides. Male 6-week-old F344 rats (20 in each group) were sequentially treated with five carcinogens for initiation in different organ target sites for 4 weeks (DMBDD treatment), and then administered DAG oil at dietary levels of 0% (control), 1.375%, 2.75% or 5.5% [triacylglycerol (TGs), with the same fatty acid composition as DAG oil were also added at dietary levels of 5.5%, 4.125%, 2.75% and 0%, respectively, to maintain the same lipid level], or 5.5% high linoleic acid TG (HLTG), 5.5% high oleic acid TG (HOTG), or 5.5% medium-chain TG (MCTG) (as reference substances, mostly consisting of triacylglycerols) admixed into AIN-93G semi-synthetic diet, for an additional 24 weeks. Controls received standard diet without any supplementation as non-treated control. All animals were killed at the end of week 28, and the major organs were carefully examined for preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions. No DAG oil treatment-related changes were noted in survival, general conditions, body weights, food consumption and organ weights. Upon quantitative analysis of glutathione S-transferase placental form (GST-P) positive foci of the liver, DAG oil was not found to exert any effects. The incidence of colon adenomas was significantly increased in rats given 1.375% DAG oil, but not 2.75% and 5.5% DAG oil, when compared to the control (5.5% TG group) value. Furthermore, incidences and multiplicity of hyperplasias and adenomas and/or adenocarcinomas were comparable across all DAG oil-treated groups. In contrast, incidences of colon adenomas and/or adenocarcinomas were significantly increased in rats given 5.5% HOTG, and adenomas with MCTG, but not 5.5% HLTG, as compared to the 5.5% TG value. Preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions induced by DMBDD treatment in various organs other than the large intestine were comparable in all cases. Thus, the current results indicate that DAG oil may not exert modifying potential on tumor development, even in the colon because of the lack of dose-dependence. DAG oil was equivalent to HOTG (standard cocking oil composed of naturally occurring fatty acids), with regard to colon tumor development. Further dose-response study concerning HOTG may be needed to confirm whether the enhancing effect of large intestine carcinogenesis exert or not.

Abstract
Fruit and vegetable intake has been linked to bladder cancer risk; however, evidence for other foods or specific dietary factors is inconclusive. The association between diet and bladder cancer risk was evaluated among 912 incident bladder cancer cases and 873 controls in Spain. Data were consistent with a reduced bladder cancer risk associated with high fruit intake; however, the association was significant only among current smokers (OR (95% CI) for 5th versus 1st quintile: 0.5 (0.3-0.9), p trend=0.009). Evaluation of food subgroups showed significant inverse associations with high intakes of berries, Liliaceae vegetables and yellow-orange vegetables. The latter association was stronger among individuals with the GSTM1 present than the null genotype (0.4 (0.2, 0.7) and 0.9 (0.6, 1.3), respectively; p for interaction=0.04). Meat or fish intake, their cooking methods or level of doneness, or heterocyclic amine intakes were not significantly associated with risk. Intake of folate, other B-vitamins (B12, B6, B2) and retinol was also associated with a reduced risk, the strongest associations being for vitamin B6 (0.6 (0.4, 0.8) p trend=0.0006) and retinol (0.6 (0.4-0.9) p trend=0.004). Our findings indicate that fruit and vegetable intake, as well as B-vitamin and retinol intake might be associated with a reduced bladder cancer risk.

Abstract
To investigate possible relationships between diet and risk for bladder cancer in Serbia, the hospital-based case-control study was carried out. This study included 130 newly diagnosed bladder cancer patients and the same number of controls matched by sex, age (%+/-%2 years) and type of residence (rural or urban). Dietary information was obtained by using a food frequency questionnaire. Initial case-control comparisons were based on tertiles of average daily intake of control group. The odds ratios (ORs) were computed for each tertile, with the lowest tertile defined as the referent category. All variables (food items) significantly related to bladder cancer were included in multivariable logistic regression analysis. According to this analysis, risk factors for bladder cancer appeared to be consumption of liver (OR=6.60, 95%CI=1.89-23.03), eggs (OR=3.12, 95%CI=1.10-8.80), pork (OR=2.99, 95%CI=1.16-7.72), and pickled vegetable (OR=3.25, 95%CI=1.36-7.71). A protective effect was found for dietary intake of kale (OR=0.21, 95%CI=0.06-0.73), cereals (OR=0.19, 95%CI=0.06-0.62), tangerines (OR=0.21, 95%CI=0.07-0.68), cabbage (OR=0.27, 95% CI=0.11-0.68), and carrots (OR=0.15, 95%CI=0.05-0.41). The study indicated a potentially important role for dietary fat and pickled vegetables in bladder carcinogenesis. An inverse association was recorded between consumption of fruits, vegetables and cereals, and the development of bladder cancer.

Abstract
A number of experimental and epidemiological studies indicate that dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a modulatory role in the development of several cancers. However, literature on the importance of dietary PUFA in urinary-tract tumourigenesis is scarce, and even contradictory. Therefore, our purpose was to evaluate comparatively, several urothelial cellular parameters linked to neoplasia when 180 BALB/c mice were initiated with the tumourigenic agent melamine and fed with two amounts of different PUFA. In experiment 1, mice were fed with 6% of fish oil (enriched in n-3 PUFA, FO), corn oil (enriched in n-6, CO) and olein (enriched in n-9, an EFA deficiency inducer) formulae plus two chow-fed control lots with (CM) and without (C) melamine treatment. In experiment 2, each of the three varieties of PUFA were offered at 10%. Following 18-22 weeks of melamine treatment, animals were autopsied. The liver fatty acid profile showed a close correlation with the dietary sources, exhibiting in the O group macroscopic and biochemical EFA-deficient (EFAD) characteristics. The frequency of simple urothelial hyperplasias (H) and dysplasia/carcinoma in situ (D/CIS) was significantly lower in the FO group, whereas both types of lesions increased in the CO and O groups, compared to the C and CM mice. Increased proliferation and abnormal luminal localized mitosis were more frequently recorded in EFAD mice, whereas abnormal apoptotic/mitosis ratio increased in both olein- and corn-oil-fed animals. This study shows that dietary PUFA modulate differentially normal and pre-neoplastic proliferation when induced by the tumorigenic agent melamine. Fish oil, rich in n-3 fatty acids, exhibits a clear antipromoting activity, whereas the role of n-6 and n-9 PUFA derivatives needs further research.

Abstract
Data derived from laboratory investigations suggest that a number of dietary variables may contribute to bladder carcinogenesis. Although bladder cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer in men in the United States, dietary studies are few. The authors examined the relations between intakes of macro- and micronutrients and the risk of bladder cancer among men in the prospective Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. Each participant completed a 131-item food frequency questionnaire in 1986 and in 1990, from which nutrient intakes were calculated. During 12 years of follow-up, 320 cases of bladder cancer were diagnosed. No association was observed for total caloric or macronutrient intake and bladder cancer risk. Similarly, we found no relation for dietary intake of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, or water-soluble vitamins and bladder cancer risk. Total vitamin E intake and vitamin E supplements were inversely associated with risk. In addition, a dose-response relation was observed for duration of vitamin E supplement use. A suggestive inverse association was seen with dose of vitamin C supplement use. More studies are needed to determine the role of vitamins E and C supplement intake in bladder carcinogenesis.
