Abstract
Background: It has been well established that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is strongly associated with obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and dyslipidemia. However, the effects of different lipid parameters on hs-CRP levels are less deliberated. The purpose of the study was to compare the relative contribution of triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) to the levels of hs-CRP. Methods: Three hundred seventy-eight subjects without known history of diabetes were recruited for the study. No concomitant antilipid or antidiabetes agents were allowed. Each subject received anthropometric measurements, fasting sampling for lipid profile and hs-CRP, and a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test for the measurements of insulin resistance (surrogated by insulin sensitivity index ISI0,120). Results: Levels of hs-CRP levels were positively correlated with Log (TG) and negatively correlated with HDL-C in partial correlation after adjustments for confounding variables, but not with LDL-C. The hs-CRP levels in the three groups by tertiles of LDL-C were similar. Subsequently, we found that body mass index (first step), Log (ISI0,120) (second step), and Log (TG) (third step) independently predicted the variance of Log (hs-CRP) in stepwise multiple regression. However, both HDL-C and LDL-C failed to be entered into the models to explain Log (hs-CRP). Conclusions: Our data demonstrated that Log (TG) was a major lipid determinant of hs-CRP levels. The contribution of LDL-C to the levels of hs-CRP might be insignificant.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation are features of metabolic syndrome (MetS) that can contribute to the shortening of telomere length (TL), a marker of cellular ageing. Research indicates that exercise can positively influence MetS-associated conditions and TL. However, the effects of low-volume exercise types on TL are still unknown. We investigated the impact of very-low-volume high-intensity interval training (LV-HIIT), one-set resistance training (1-RT), and whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) on TL, inflammation, and cardiometabolic indices in 167 MetS patients. Data were derived from two randomized controlled trials where patients were allocated to an exercise group (2 sessions/week, for 12 weeks) or a control group. All groups received standard-care nutritional weight loss counselling. TL was determined as the T/S ratio (telomere to single-copy gene amount). All groups significantly reduced body weight (p < 0.05), but the T/S-ratio (p < 0.001) only increased with LV-HIIT. OS-related inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein) only decreased (p < 0.05) following LV-HIIT. The MetS severity z-score improved with LV-HIIT (p < 0.001) and 1-RT (p = 0.014) but not with WB-EMS. In conclusion, very-low-volume exercise modalities have differential effects on telomeres, inflammation, and cardiometabolic health. Only LV-HIIT but not strength-based low-volume exercise increased TL in MetS patients, presumably due to superior effects on OS-related inflammatory markers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oxidative stress known as a predictive marker for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases could be measured through pro-oxidant antioxidant balance (PAB). The present study aimed to evaluate PAB and its association with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the serum of postmenopausal women with diabetes mellitus. METHODS In this case-control study, 99 diabetic and 100 healthy postmenopausal women without diabetes mellitus were recruited. Serum PAB values, hs-CRP, lipid profile, insulin, and vitamin D levels were measured. Moreover, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR, HOMA-β and QUICKI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. RESULTS Serum PAB, hs-CRP, insulin resistance, HOMA-β, QUICKI, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) levels were significantly higher in the postmenopausal women with diabetes mellitus, while there was no significant difference in the total cholesterol (TC), serum insulin, WC, WHR, WHtR and vitamin D levels between the groups. Pearson correlation coefficient showed that HDL-C and insulin levels were directly correlated with serum PAB. Also, there was a significant direct relationship between LDL-C and insulin levels and hs-CRP. There was no meaningful relationship between serum insulin and vitamin D levels and other assessed parameters. Backward logistic regression showed a positive relationship between diabetes mellitus and serum PAB and an inverse relationship with serum HDL levels. CONCLUSIONS Serum PAB, hs-CRP concentration, and lipid profile were significantly different between postmenopausal women with and without diabetes mellitus. These differences may contribute to the development of coronary complications.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and in depression. Fatigue is the most disabling symptom in patients with MS and could also be a part of depressive symptomatology. In this study, we measured the serum levels of uric acid (UA) as a marker of oxidative stress and C-reactive protein (CRP) as an inflammatory marker, in 98 patients with MS in relapse and remitting phase of illness and 35 healthy subjects. Degree of depressive symptomatology and fatigue were assessed with Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Further, we examined the possible correlation of these biomarkers with symptoms of depression and fatigue. Relapse and remitting MS had a lower serum UA levels than controls (236.97 ± 9.25 µmol/L vs. 268.27 ± 0.09 µmol/L vs. 314.82 ± 11.02 µmol/L; p = 0.000), while sera levels of CRP were higher in relapse than remitting patients (4.46 ± 0.40 mg/L vs. 1.01 ± 0.38 mg/L; p = 0.000). Patients in relapse had higher BDI scores (15.68 ± 16.62 vs. 8.36 ± 7.10; p = 0.045). Decreased UA levels showed weak negative correlation with the presence of sadness and disturbed daily activities, higher CRP levels positively correlated with severe depression and the correlation between depression and fatigue was also observed (p < 0.05). It is possible that decreased UA levels lead to sadness, disturbed daily activities and severe disability. Every attack of CRP elevation in relapse could additionally precipitate the depression onset. The clinicians must pay special attention to early detection of fatigue because it could precede depression and improve further treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Oxidative stress describes an imbalance between production and degradation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage macromolecules. However, ROS may also serve as signaling molecules activating cellular pathways involved in cell proliferation and adaptation. This review describes alterations in metabolic diseases including obesity, insulin resistance, and/or diabetes mellitus as well as responses to acute and chronic physical exercise. RECENT FINDINGS Chronic upregulation of oxidative stress associates with the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D). While single bouts of exercise can transiently induce oxidative stress, chronic exercise promotes favorable oxidative adaptations with improvements in muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and glucose uptake. Although impaired antioxidant defense fails to scavenge ROS in metabolic diseases, chronic exercising can restore this abnormality. The different metabolic effects are likely due to variability of reactive species and discrepancies in temporal (acute vs. chronic) and local (subcellular distribution) patterns of production.

Abstract
Aim Serum albumin concentration is associated with both type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS). We sought to investigate whether baseline serum albumin and change in serum albumin could be independent risk factors for prediabetes in subjects without MetS. We further examined the effect of serum albumin on progression to overt diabetes in subjects who developed prediabetes. Methods Among 10,792 participants without diabetes and MetS who consecutively underwent yearly health check-ups over six years, 9,807 subjects without incident MetS were enrolled in this longitudinal retrospective study. The risk of developing prediabetes (impared fasting glucose or hemoglobin A1c) was analyzed according to baseline and percent change in serum albumin concentration using Cox regression analysis. Serial changes in serum albumin concentration were measured from baseline to one year before prediabetes diagnosis, and then from the time of prediabetes diagnosis to progression to overt diabetes or final follow-up. Results A total of 4,398 incident cases of prediabetes developed during 35,807 person-years (median 3.8 years). The hazard ratio for incident prediabetes decreased as percent change in serum albumin concentration (quartiles and per 1%) increased in a crude and fully adjusted model. However, baseline serum albumin concentration itself was not associated with prediabetic risk. Serum albumin levels kept increasing until the end of follow-up in prediabetic subjects who returned to normal glycemic status, whereas these measures did not change in prediabetic subjects who developed type 2 diabetes. Serum albumin concentration measured at the end of follow-up was the highest in the regression group, compared to the stationary (p = 0.014) or progression groups (p = 0.009). Conclusions Increase in serum albumin concentration might protect against early glycemic deterioration and progression to type 2 diabetes even in subjects without MetS.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of oral hormone therapy (HT) on oxidative stress (OS) in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome (MetS). A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial was carried out. We formed four groups of 25 women each; healthy (HW) and MetS women (MSW) were assigned to HT (1 mg/day of estradiol valerate plus 5 mg/10 day of medroxiprogesterone) or placebo. We measured plasma lipoperoxides, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, total plasma antioxidant status and uric acid, as OS markers. Alternative cut-off values of each parameter were defined and a stress score (SS) ranging from 0 to 7 was used as total OS. MetS was defined according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) criteria. Participants were seen at baseline, 3 and 6 months. After 6 months, MetS decreased in MSW-HT (48%), their triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) improved; in the other groups no difference was found. SS in MSW-HT decreased (3.8 ± 0.3 to 1.7 ± 0.3, p < 0.05) and OS was also reduced (44%), this effect was evident since 3 mo. HW-HT with high OS also decreased (40%). In placebo groups there was no change. Our findings suggest that HT improve lipids and OS associated to MetS in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of abdominal obesity among women in UAE is exceptionally high. However, its impact on cardiovascular health has not been adequately investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate: (1) correlations between inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers vs. anthropometric and metabolic measures; (2) rates of dyslipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension and (3) risks of cardiovascular disease. METHODS One hundred ten "healthy" overweight/obese Emirati women attending nutrition counselling clinics were randomly recruited. All participants had completed questionnaire, physical examination and laboratory assessment. RESULTS The participants' mean ± SD of age, body mass-index, waist circumference were 39 ± 9 years, 34 ± 6 kg/m(2) and 100 ± 13 cm respectively. Among the studied women 45 % met diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome showing a positive correlation of hsCRP with BMI (p = 0.002), body fat (p = 0.002) and waist circumference (p = 0.018). There was positive correlation of IL-6 with waist circumference (p = 0.019) and adiponectin with HDL (p = 0.007). Prevalence of HDL <1.3 mmol/L or triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/L were 82 %, dysglycemia 31 %, and hypertension 27 and 37 % of women had either 'high' or 'moderate' calculated cardiovascular 10-year risk score. CONCLUSION The levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers were highly prevalent among overweight/obese Emirati women and this may predispose to increasing cardiovascular risks at relatively young age. Thus effective strategies to impact cardiovascular burden and conducting outcome studies assessing the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and addressing obesity prevention among women are urgently needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sulfur mustard (SM) is a strong alkylating agent that primarily targets the skin, eye and lung. The current study evaluated the pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) assay in human serum of SM-exposed patients. DESIGN AND METHODS sera of 35 SM-exposed patients and 19 healthy volunteers were recruited. Both groups had nonsmoker and nonalcoholic people with no diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and other pulmonary diseases (COPD because of smoking, asthma and so on). All patients had documented exposure to SM. The PAB was measured. RESULTS SM-exposed patients with normal values for pulmonary function test and severe obstructive pulmonary disease demonstrated a significant increase in PAB value in compared with healthy volunteers (the PAB values in healthy volunteers, normal and severe patients were 48.74 ± 21.07 HK, 101.45 ± 32.68 HK and 120.23 ± 31.55 HK, respectively). However, the level of oxidation is not related to the severity of disease defined by spirometry findings. A significant negative correlation was established between the PAB value and FEV1. CONCLUSIONS The increased PAB value in chemical casualties showed that these patients are exposed to oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Apolipoprotein A-II (ApoA-II) constitutes approximately 20% of the total HDL protein content. The results of various studies on the relationship between cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the plasma ApoA-II level are contradictory. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between ApoA-II polymorphism and oxidative stress (OS) as a risk factor for CVD. METHODS The present comparative study was carried out on 180 obese and non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes, with equal numbers of CC, TC, and TT genotypes of ApoA-II -265T/C gene. The ApoA-II genotype was determined by the TaqMan assay method. The anthropometric measurements and serum levels of lipid profile, superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and 8-isoprostaneF2α were measured. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding factors, in the total study population and in obese and non-obese groups, the subjects with CC genotype had a lower mean serum SOD activity (p=0.002, p=0.007 and p=0.005, respectively) and higher mean 8-isoprostaneF2α concentration (p<0.001, p=0.003 and p=0.004, respectively) than the T-allele carriers. In the TT/TC group, the mean 8-isoprostanF2α concentration was significantly higher in the obese subjects than the non-obese subjects (p=0.009). In the CC group, no significant differences were found in the OS factors between obese and non-obese groups. CONCLUSION The T allele in patients with type 2 diabetes is a protective factor against OS; obesity inhibits this protective effect. The results of this study represent the anti-atherogenic properties of ApoA-II. However, further studies are needed in this field.

Abstract
Menopause is a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. MetS is a constellation of interdependent factors such as insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The prevalence of MetS in postmenopause is due to loss of the protective role of estrogens and increased circulating androgens resulting in changes to body fat distribution and development of abdominal obesity. Excessive visceral adipose tissue plays an important role due to synthesis and secretion of bioactive substances such as adipocytokines, proinflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species, prothrombotic, and vasoconstrictor factors. MetS may also impact risk assessment of breast cancer, osteoporosis and chronic kidney disease, and quality of life during the menopausal transition. Increased MetS has stimulated the exploration of new laboratory tests for early detection and therapies.

Abstract
The production of oxygen free radicals in type 2 diabetes mellitus contributes to the
development of complications, especially the cardiovascular-related ones.
Peroxiredoxins (PRDXs) are antioxidant enzymes that combat oxidative stress. The aim
of this study was to investigate the associations between the levels of PRDX isoforms
(1, 2, 4, and 6) and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Fifty-three patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (28F/25M) and 25 healthy control
subjects (7F/18M) were enrolled. We measured the plasma levels of each PRDX isoform
and analyzed their correlations with cardiovascular risk factors. The plasma PRDX1,
-2, -4, and -6 levels were higher in the diabetic patients than in the healthy
control subjects. PRDX2 and -6 levels were negatively correlated with diastolic blood
pressure, fasting blood sugar, and hemoglobin A1c. In contrast, PRDX1 levels were
positively correlated with low-density lipoprotein and C-reactive protein levels.
PRDX4 levels were negatively correlated with triglycerides. In conclusion, PRDX1, -2,
-4, and -6 showed differential correlations with a variety of traditional
cardiovascular risk factors. These results should encourage further research into the
crosstalk between PRDX isoforms and cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
AbstractC-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation. Atherosclerosis is now recognized as inflammatory disease, and it seems that CRP directly contributes to atherogenesis. Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) molecule increases the uptake of lipid products by macrophages leading to cholesterol accumulation and subsequent foam cell formation. The elevated levels of high sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) and oxidized LDL (OxLDL) in the blood were found to be associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In this review, we highlighted the evidence that CRP and OxLDL are involved in interrelated (patho) physiological pathways. The findings on association between hsCRP and OxLDL in the clinical setting will be also summarized.

Abstract
Our aim was to evaluate lipid peroxidation, expressed as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite + nitrate) expressed as NOx, and TBARS/NOx ratio in a group of subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS). In this regard we enrolled 106 subjects with MS defined according to the IDF criteria, subsequently subdivided into diabetic (DMS) and nondiabetic (NDMS) and also into subjects with a low triglycerides/HDL-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) index or with a high TG/HDL-C index. In the entire group and in the four subgroups of MS subjects we found an increase in TBARS and NOx levels and a decrease in TBARS/NOx ratio in comparison with normal controls. Regarding all these parameters no statistical difference between DMS and NDMS was evident, but a significant increase in NOx was present in subjects with a high TG/HDL-C index in comparison with those with a low index. In MS subjects we also found a negative correlation between TBARS/NO x ratio and TG/HDL-C index. Considering the hyperactivity of the inducible NO synthase in MS, these data confirm the altered redox and inflammatory status that characterizes the MS and suggest a link between lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and insulin resistance, evaluated as TG/HDL-C index.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is associated with both healthy aging and age-related disease states. In connection with oxidative stress, immunity is also a major component as a result of the chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with the development of tissue aging. Here we show that long-term treatment with the antioxidant tempol extends life-span in mice. Tempol-treated mice exhibited a reduction in mortality at 20 months. Tempol drinking did not have any effect on body weight, amount of visceral adipose tissue, or plasma biochemical parameters in aged mice. Body temperature of aged control mice (which drank only water) was significantly lower than young mice, but this reduction of body temperature was partially restored in aged mice which drank tempol. Plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and C-reactive protein were significantly increased in the control aged mice compared with young mice, but levels of both were normalized by tempol drinking. One of the endogenous antioxidants, ascorbic acid, was significantly increased in the plasma of mice which consumed tempol. The proportion of CD4 lymphocytes in the blood of aged tempol-treated mice was partially increased in comparison to aged control mice. These results suggest that the reduction of mortality by tempol is due to amelioration of chronic inflammation and improved function of the immune system through antioxidant effects.

Abstract
Background High-cholesterol diet (HCD) increases the oxidative stress in different tissues leading to many diseases. Rutin (RT) is a natural flavonoid (vitamin p), which possesses an antioxidant activity with protective potential. The present study aimed to examine the potential effects of rutin on hypercholesterolemia-induced hepatotoxicity in rat. Methods Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: GI) control (Rat chow), GII) Rutin (0.2% in rat chow), GIII) HCD (1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid in rat chow) and GIV) rutin (0.2%) + HCD. Results Rutin in combination with HCD induced a significant protective effect against the hepatotoxicity by reducing the plasma level of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The HCD (GII) showed a decrease in glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and increase in glutathione S transferase α (GSTα), sulfiredoxin-1(Srx1), glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) genes expression levels. Conclusion Treatment with rutin reversed all the altered genes induced by HCD nearly to the control levels. The present study concluded that the HCD feedings altered the expression levels of some genes involved in the oxidative stress pathway resulting in DNA damage and hepatotoxicity. Rutin have a hepatoprotective effect through the mechanism of enhancing the antioxidant effect via amelioration of oxidative stress genes.

Abstract
AIMS High ankle-brachial index (ABI) is marker of increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, while the relationship and mechanism between high ABI and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are unclear. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship and possible mechanism of MetS with high ABI. METHODS 341 participants without CRF were recruited. Among these participants, 58 participants (ABI ≥ 1.3) were include in high ABI group and the other 283 participants (0.9 < ABI < 1.3) were include in normal ABI group. Furthermore, these 341 participants were also divided into MetS group (n = 54) and non-MetS group (n = 287). All participants received examinations including body mass index (BMI), ABI and related biochemical parameters. RESULTS Compared with non-MetS group, the prevalence of high ABI was higher in MetS group (27.8% vs. 15%, p < 0.05). Participants with 3-4 metabolic risk factors had higher prevalence of high ABI than those with 0-1 metabolic risk factors (27.8% vs. 12.7%, p < 0.05). The prevalence of high ABI in overweight participants was higher than those with normal body weight. And the participants with hypertension also had higher prevalence of high ABI than normotensive participants. BMI, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were all higher in high ABI group than normal ABI group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS More metabolic risk factors have increased the risk of high ABI. Inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with prevalence of high ABI in metabolic syndrome patients without chronic renal failure.
