Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes requires experience and a specific infrastructure. Therefore, center size might influence outcome in diabetes treatment. OBJECTIVE To analyze the influence of center size on the quality of diabetes treatment in children and adolescents in Germany and Austria. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 2009 and 2018, we analyzed metabolic control, acute complications, and rates of recommended screening tests in the DPV cohort. Diabetes centers were classified according to the number of patients from "XS" to "XL" (<20 [XS], ≥20 to <50 [S], ≥50 to <100 [M], ≥100 to <200 [L], ≥200 [XL]). RESULTS Over the 10-year period, metabolic control improved significantly in "M", "L" and "XL" diabetes centers. Treatment targets are best achieved in "M" centers, while "XS" centers have the highest mean hemoglobin A1c. The relation between hemoglobin A1c and center size follows a "v-shaped" curve. In 2009, conventional insulin therapy was most frequently used in "XS" centers, but in 2018, there was no difference in mode of insulin therapy according to center size. Use of CSII and sensor augmented CSII/hybrid closed loop increased with center size. Patients cared for in "XS" diabetes centers had the fewest follow-up visits per year. The rates of severe hypoglycemia and DKA were lowest in "XL" diabetes centers, and the rate of DKA was highest in "XS" centers. CONCLUSION Center size influences quality of care in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes. Further investigations regarding contributing factors such as staffing and financial resources are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are not included in guidelines regarding diagnosis criteria for celiac disease (CD) without a diagnostic biopsy, due to lack of data. We explored whether tissue transglutaminase antibodies (anti-tTG) that were ≥ 10 times the upper limit of normal (10× ULN) predicted CD in T1D. METHODS Data from the Swedish prospective Better Diabetes Diagnosis study was used, and 2035 children and adolescents with T1D diagnosed between 2005-2010 were included. Of these, 32 had been diagnosed with CD before T1D. The children without CD were repeatedly screened for CD using anti-tTG antibodies of immunoglobulin type A. In addition, their human leukocyte antigen (HLA) were genotyped. All children with positive anti-tTG were advised to undergo biopsy. Biopsies were performed on 119 children and graded using the Marsh-Oberhüber classification. RESULTS All of the 60 children with anti-tTG ≥10x ULN had CD verified by biopsies. The degree of mucosal damage correlated with anti-tTG levels. Among 2003 screened children, 6.9% had positive anti-tTG and 5.6% were confirmed CD. The overall CD prevalence, when including the 32 children with CD before T1D, was 7.0% (145/2035). All but one of the children diagnosed with CD had HLA-DQ2 and/or DQ8. CONCLUSIONS As all screened children and adolescents with T1D with tissue transglutaminase antibodies above 10 times the positive value 10x ULN had CD, we propose that the guidelines for diagnosing CD in screened children, when biopsies can be omitted, should also apply to children and adolescents with T1D as a noninvasive method.

Abstract
Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are closely linked. Several studies have documented the increased prevalence of thyroid disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus and vice versa. This review critically discusses the different underlying mechanisms linking type 1 and 2 diabetes and thyroid dysfunction to demonstrate that the association of these two common disorders is unlikely a simple coincidence. We assess the current state of knowledge on the central and peripheral control of thyroid hormone on food intake and glucose and lipid metabolism in target tissues (such as liver, white and brown adipose tissue, pancreatic β cells, and skeletal muscle) to explain the mechanism linking overt and subclinical hypothyroidism to type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. We also elucidate the common susceptibility genes and the pathogenetic mechanisms contributing to the autoimmune mechanism involved in the onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus and autoimmune thyroid disorders. An untreated thyroid dysfunction can impair the metabolic control of diabetic patients, and this association can have important repercussions on the outcome of both of these disorders. Therefore, we offer recommendations for the diagnosis, management, and screening of thyroid disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus, including the treatment of diabetic patients planning a pregnancy. We also discuss the major causes of failure to achieve an optimal management of thyroid dysfunction in diabetic patients and provide recommendations for assessing and treating these disorders during therapy with antidiabetic drugs. An algorithm for a correct approach of these disorders when linked is also provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coeliac disease (CD) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) often coexist. This association warrants assessment for CD in patients with JIA. We evaluated the clinical relevance and cost-effectiveness of human leucocyte antigen (HLA) genotyping in first-line screening for development of CD in children with JIA. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS 95 patients with JIA were screened for CD using CD-specific antibodies. In case of positivity, a small intestinal biopsy was performed to confirm diagnosis. In addition, HLA genotyping was performed. 110 age-matched and sex-matched Caucasian children from the same geographical area served as controls. RESULTS CD was diagnosed in 4 of 95 patients with JIA (4.2%), a rate significantly higher compared with controls (p<0.02) and 14 times higher than in the general population. Twenty-six patients (27.4%) had one of the variants of the risk genotypes. All four patients diagnosed with CD had a HLA-DQ2.5 genotype: one was homozygote, the remainder heterozygote. Twenty-two patients are, judging by their HLA genotypes, at risk of developing CD and require repeated serological screening. None of the 69 patients without HLA-DQ2/DQ8 genotypes had CD-specific antibodies. Screening with HLA genotyping becomes cheaper than screening without after the second determination. CONCLUSIONS In our cohort of patients with JIA, lack of HLA-DQ2/DQ8 genotypes identified a majority not at risk of CD in whom repeated serological testing is unnecessary. Genotyping is nowadays the most efficient and cost-effective way to screen for CD risk in JIA.

Abstract
Basal insulin peglispro (BIL) consists of insulin lispro with a 20-kDa polyethylene glycol (PEG) moiety covalently attached to lysine B28. Because chronic parenteral administration of PEGylated proteins to animals has sometimes resulted in PEG vacuolation of tissue macrophages, renal tubular cells, and choroid plexus ependymal cells, we investigated whether chronic subcutaneous (sc) injection of BIL in rats (52 weeks) and dogs (39 weeks) was associated with systemic toxicities or other changes, including vacuolation of tissue macrophages, renal tubular cells, and ependymal cells. Rats and dogs received daily sc injections of BIL (rats: 0.17, 0.45, or 1.15 mg/kg/d and dogs: 0.025, 0.10, or 0.20 mg/kg/d) and the reference compound, HUMULIN N® (neutral protamine Hagedorn [NPH] human insulin; rats: 0.15 mg/kg/d and dogs: 0.02–0.03 mg/kg/d). Animals were evaluated for standard end points including mortality, clinical signs, body weights, toxicokinetics, glucodynamics, clinical pathology, and morphological pathology. Nonadverse injection site lipohypertrophy occurred for all BIL and NPH doses but more frequently with BIL. No BIL-related hyperplasia or neoplasia was observed. There was no vacuolation of tissue macrophages, renal tubular cells, or ependymal cells attributable to PEG. These studies demonstrate BIL is not associated with tissue vacuolation attributable to PEG at 4- to 6-fold multiple of the median clinical exposure in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children and adolescents is relatively often accompanied by other immunopathological diseases, autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) or celiac disease (CD). Our aim was to assess whether these conditions are associated with changes in the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in pediatric patients with T1D. In a cross-sectional study we identified eligible 332 patients with T1D aged 8-18 years, of whom 248 (75%) together with their parents responded to the PedsQL Generic and Diabetes Modules. Compared to 143 patients without thyroid autoantibodies, 40 patients with a thyroxine-treated AITD scored lower in the overall generic HRQOL (P = 0.014), as well as in the overall diabetes-specific HRQOL (P = 0.013). After adjustment for age, gender, duration of diabetes, type of diabetes treatment, and diabetes control, this association remained statistically significant for the generic HRQOL (P = 0.023). Celiac disease was not associated with a change in the generic or diabetes-specific HRQOL (P = 0.07 and P = 0.63, resp.). Parental scores showed no association with AITD or celiac disease, except a marginally significant decrease in the overall generic HRQOL (P = 0.039) in the T1D + AITD compared to T1D group. Our study indicates that, in pediatric patients with T1D, concomitant thyroxine-treated AITD is associated with lower quality of life.

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease (CD) are autoimmune diseases with clinical and pathogenic overlap. The mean prevalence of CD in patients with T1D is about 8 %. Classic intestinal symptoms of CD may not be present in T1D leading to the recommendation for active case finding in this higher risk group. Screening is done with sensitive and specific serologies including tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG. Positive serologies are confirmed by the presence of villous atrophy and increased intraepithelial lymphocytes on duodenal biopsy. A strict gluten free diet is recommended, although this can pose challenges for T1D patients who already have dietary restrictions. In aggregate, it appears as if the gluten free diet may help T1D management. T1D and CD have overlapping genetic and environmental risk factors. Among these, non-HLA genetic factors and the gut microbiome are among recent developments that will be discussed in this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Coeliac autoimmunity (CA) has a known association with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) for which screening is routinely recommended but less frequently followed. The impact of CA in T1DM has been variably reported. The aims of this study are as follows: (1) to study the prevalence of CA in patients with T1DM and (2) to study the impact of CA not only on nutritional parameters but also on glycaemic control, endocrine axes and bone health. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighty-six consecutive patients with T1DM were screened for CA using immunoglobulin A (IgA) tissue transglutaminase as a marker (TTG; IgG anti-gliadin in IgA-deficient case). CA positive (CA+) cases were compared with age-matched and sex-matched CA negative (CA-) T1DM cases for anthropometry, glycaemic control (assessed by glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and hypoglycaemic/hyperglycaemic episodes), endocrine (thyroid function, cortisol, growth hormone (GH) axis, gonadal axes), haematological (haemoglobin, iron profile and vitamin B12 status) and calcium metabolism parameters and bone densitometry (by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)). Consenting patients with CA also underwent upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy with duodenal biopsy. RESULTS Out of 86 patients, 11 (12.75%) screened positive for CA (seven patients underwent duodenal biopsies which were suggestive of Marsh grade III(2), II(3) and I(2) disease). The CA+ T1DM patients were comparable with CA- T1DM in terms of anthropometry. CA+ patients had higher HbA1c (10.7±1.8 vs. 8.4±1.0 (93±19 vs. 68±11 mmol/mol); p<0.01), more hypoglycaemic episodes (five vs. two; p<0.05), higher prevalence of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, lower insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels and lower bone mineral density (BMD) z-score at total body (-1.91±1.05 vs. -0.63±0.73; p<0.05) and lumbar spine (-1.69±0.92 vs. -0.36±0.93; p<0.05). The incidence of fractures in the past 3years was also more in CA+ patients than in CA- patients (four vs. one; p<0.05). CONCLUSION CA has an important autoimmune association with T1DM. The concomitant presence of CA adversely affects stature, bone health, glycaemic control and iron and B12 levels in T1DM. IgA sufficiency should be ensured before using an IgA-based screening test for CA.

Abstract
Obesity and diabetes are chronic diseases that affect people all over the world, and their incidence is increasing in both children and adults. Clinically, they affect a number of organs, including the skin. The cutaneous manifestations caused or aggravated by obesity and diabetes are varied and usually bear some relation to the time that has elapsed since the onset of the disease. They include soft fibromas, acanthosis nigricans, striae, xerosis, keratosis pilaris, plantar hyperkeratosis, fungal and bacterial skin infections, granuloma annulare, necrobiosis lipoidica, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. In this review article we present the skin changes found in children with diabetes mellitus and obesity and related syndromes and highlight the importance of the skin as a tool for establishing clinical suspicion and early diagnosis of systemic disease.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to determine the prevalence and clinical and temporal relationship of celiac disease (CD) in a population of Swedish children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) before, during, and after the Swedish epidemic of CD (birth cohorts 1984-1996). METHODS Retrospective chart review between 1995 and 2005 was conducted of 1151 children (0-18 years old, born 1981-2004) with T1DM. RESULTS A prevalence of 9.1% (95% CI: 7.2-11.2) of CD in T1DM children was found. No significant difference in prevalence of CD was observed in different birth years, in contrast to the Swedish epidemic of CD. Sixty-two percent of children diagnosed with CD after T1DM onset had pathological levels of antibodies within the first 24 months. The presence or absence of gastrointestinal symptoms had no predictable value for biopsy-confirmed CD or not. CONCLUSION The onset of CD in the T1DM population does not follow the pattern of the general population during the Swedish epidemic of CD. The shared genetic component in the human leukocyte antigen region in cases with comorbidity of CD and T1DM may overrule other CD-causing factors in the general population. Children with T1DM should be screened for CD at diagnosis and repeatedly at least during the first 2 years, even if asymptomatic.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate screening practices for celiac disease in patients with type 1 diabetes across North America. The research question investigated was whether diabetes centers screen for celiac disease in type 1 diabetes more frequently than other facilities. Research Design and Methods A survey with 27 questions on screening practices for celiac disease in patients with type 1 diabetes was designed by experts in celiac disease and diabetes. Surveys were sent by email to diabetes educators and dietitians throughout the United States and Canada between December 2010 and May 2011. Results There were 514 respondents from 484 endocrine clinics, diabetes clinics, private practices, community nutrition centers, and inpatient centers. Thirty-five percent of work locations screened for celiac disease, with endocrine clinics reporting screening at the highest frequency (80%). Tissue transglutaminase was the most common screening test used. The most frequently recommended treatment of confirmed celiac disease was a gluten-free diet. However, only 71% of respondents recommended biopsy in patients with positive serologies. Most respondents (55.3%) reported that the gluten-free diet resulted in symptom improvement in the majority of patients. Conclusions Staff at endocrine clinics were more likely to suggest screening for celiac disease in patients with type 1 diabetes. Both low screening frequency as well as inconsistency in management of positive celiac disease serological tests indicated an increase in education regarding celiac disease in patients with type 1 diabetes is required. In addition uniform guidelines should be developed.

Abstract
The nonclassic clinical presentation of celiac disease (CD) becomes increasingly common in physician's daily practice, which requires an awareness of its many clinical faces with atypical, silent, and latent forms. Besides the common genetic background (HLA DQ2/DQ8) of the disease, other non-HLA genes are now notably reported with a probable association to atypical forms. The availability of high-sensitive and specific serologic tests such as antitissue transglutuminase, antiendomysium, and more recent antideamidated, gliadin peptide antibodies permits to efficiently uncover a large portion of the submerged CD iceberg, including individuals having conditions associated with a high risk of developing CD (type 1 diabetes, autoimmune diseases, Down syndrome, family history of CD, etc.), biologic abnormalities (iron deficiency anemia, abnormal transaminase levels, etc.), and extraintestinal symptoms (short stature, neuropsychiatric disorders, alopecia, dental enamel hypoplasia, recurrent aphtous stomatitis, etc.). Despite the therapeutic alternatives currently in developing, the strict adherence to a GFD remains the only effective and safe therapy for CD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of celiac disease among type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients is 5-10 times higher than in the general population. Thus, evaluation of celiac serology is indicated at diagnosis of T1DM and on follow up. AIM This study was prompted by the observation that elevated anti-TTG antibody levels in diabetic children may spontaneously normalize despite continued consumption of gluten. The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of this phenomenon and associated factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS The files of all children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus from 2003-2009 at a tertiary pediatric medical center were reviewed for those with elevated serum levels of anti-TTG antibody. Clinical, medical, laboratory, and treatment data were collected. Findings were compared between patients diagnosed with celiac disease and patients with initially elevated anti-TTG antibody levels that spontaneously normalized. RESULTS Forty-eight of the 738 patients with type 1 diabetes attending our center (6.5%) had elevated anti-TTG antibody blood levels. Celiac disease was diagnosed in 23, and anti-TTG antibody levels normalized in 17 (35.4%), all of whom consumed gluten. At one-year follow-up, there was no significant difference between the groups in HbA1c level or change in anthropometric measurements. CONCLUSION Physicians treating children with type 1 diabetes and mildly elevated anti-TTG antibody levels might consider 12-month serologic follow-up on a gluten-containing diet rather than immediate duodenal biopsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Following the recommendations of The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) in 2000, our clinic started routine screening of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) for coeliac disease (CD). OBJECTIVES To determine the short-term clinical and metabolic effects of gluten free diet (GFD) in a group of children with T1D and confirmed CD. METHODS Data were collected on all children with T1D and CD between November 2000 and November 2007 before and 12 months after commencement of GFD. Data included the presence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, episodes of severe hypoglycaemia, daily insulin requirements, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), haemoglobin, and persistence of autoantibodies. The effects of GFD on these parameters were studied and compared with those from the revised ISPAD Guidelines in 2007. RESULTS Four hundred and sixty-eight children with T1D were screened, of whom 23 patients were diagnosed with CD. The mean age at diagnosis of T1D and CD was 6.8 years and 11.1 years, respectively. Ten out of 11 children showed improvement in their GI symptoms, while 6 out of 8 patients had no further severe hypoglycaemic episodes. Nine patients remained positive for antiendomysial antibodies after GFD. There was no significant change in the standard deviation score for height, weight, and BMI or the mean HbA1c and Hb before and after GFD. However the mean insulin requirement increased from 0.88 to 1.1 units/kg/day, which was statistically significant (p < 0.005). CONCLUSION In our experience, GFD showed short-term benefits by reducing GI symptoms and severe hypoglycaemia while the insulin requirement increased significantly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the extended family history of diabetes or autoimmune diseases in families with and without children having type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Three hundred case families and 381 control families were interviewed using structured questionnaires. RESULTS The proportion of case children having at least one relative with type 1 diabetes outside the nuclear family was higher than that of control children (50.3 vs. 31.8%, P < 0.001). The proportions of case and control children having relatives with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes were similar. Other autoimmune diseases occurred more frequently among the case children (9.7 vs. 1.1%, P < 0.001), in the case nuclear families (22.0 vs. 12.9%, P = 0.002) and in relatives outside the case nuclear family (72.0 vs. 62.2%, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Type 1 diabetes and autoimmune diseases not only cluster in the nuclear families of children with type 1 diabetes but are also overrepresented in their extended families.

Abstract
It has long been recognised that thyroid hormones have marked effects on glucose homeostasis. Glucose intolerance is associated with hyperthyroidism and most recently it was shown that hypothyroidism is characterised by insulin resistance. Although autoimmune thyroid disease is more prevalent in type 1 diabetes as a result of their common origin, in patients with type 2 diabetes the prevalence of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism is similar to that of the general population. However, in type 2 diabetic patients, the presence of the highly frequent sub-clinical forms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism should be ruled out since they may be associated with higher cardiovascular risk. While there are no doubts about the therapeutic impact of normalising hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, the information available about the benefit of treating subclinical thyroid disease in diabetes remains insufficient.

Abstract
Despite the advent of sensitive and specific serologic testing, routine screening for celiac disease (CD) in diabetic populations may not be universal practice, and many clinicians struggle to find the optimal approach to managing CD in pediatric Type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients. While some clinicians advocate screening for CD in all patients with T1D, others are unsure whether this is warranted. The diagnosis of patients who present with symptomatic CD, including malabsorption and obvious pathology upon biopsy, remains straightforward, with improvements noted on a gluten-free diet. Many patients identified by screening, however, tend to be asymptomatic. Evidence is inconclusive as to whether the benefits of screening and potentially treating asymptomatic individuals outweigh the harms of managing a population already burdened with a serious illness. This review focuses on current knowledge of CD in children and youth with T1D, highlighting important elements of the disease's pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic challenges.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with other autoimmune diseases such as celiac disease (CD) and Hashimoto thyroiditis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the screening frequency for CD and thyroid antibodies in a multicentre survey. METHODS The Diabetes Patienten Verlaufsdokumentationssystem (DPV) initiative is based on standardized, prospective, multicentre documentation in children and adolescents with diabetes. Data from 31,104 patients <18 yr of age (52% males, mean age 13.1 yr) with T1DM from 177 paediatric centres in Germany and Austria from 1995 until 2007 were analysed. RESULTS Of 31,104 patients, 16,994 patients (55%) were screened at least once for CD. In 1995, 44% of the patients were screened for CD compared with 68.6% in 2006. Annual screening for CD has also increased (11.9% in 1995 compared with 43.6% in 2006). Eleven per cent of the patients had positive antibodies for CD. Patients with positive antibodies were significantly younger at diabetes onset and had a significantly longer duration of diabetes (p < 0.001). Compared with screening for CD, screening for thyroid antibodies was performed more frequently (at least once in 62% of the patients). Fifteen per cent of the patients had positive thyroid antibodies. Screening for thyroid antibodies also increased from 62.6 to 72.9%, and annual screening frequency increased from 15.9 to 48.9%. CONCLUSION Screening for associated autoimmune diseases in children with T1DM has increased during the past decade. Eleven per cent of the patients had positive CD-specific antibodies, and 15% had positive thyroid antibodies. Screening for thyroid antibodies is performed more frequently than screening for CD.

Abstract
Patients with an autoimmune condition are known to be at higher risk of developing other autoimmune disorders. Type 1 diabetes may be associated with additional autoimmune disorders including autoimmune thyroid disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in a group of children, adolescents, and young adults with type 1 diabetes from northeastern Brazil as well as their significance for the development of thyroid disorders. The study design was cross-sectional and descriptive, analyzing young people with a previous type 1 diabetes diagnosis. Two hundred and fourteen children and adolescents with prior diagnosis of type 1 diabetes were evaluated. Antibodies to thyroperoxidase (anti-TPO) were determined in all patients and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. The anti-TPO antibody test was positive in 54 out of the 214 patients studied, resulting in an overall prevalence of 25.2%. Among the anti-TPO-positive subjects, females were predominant (72%) over males (28%) (p < 0.001). A total of 55.5% patients with positive anti-TPO antibodies had abnormal TSH levels. Clinically significant hypothyroidism was found in 29.6% and subclinical hypothyroidism in 22.2% of patients with positive anti-TPO. Hyperthyroidism was present in only 3% of them. Our results demonstrate the high prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis in patients with type 1 diabetes and the need for these patients of regular screening to make a precocious diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies and clinical significance of thyroid autoimmunity in children with the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 1. The study group comprised 222 children all with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 1 (122 boys) with a mean age 9.92 +/- 4.5 years, who were admitted to a regional diabetes division in 2000-2004. Assessment of ATA and ATG were performed and two emerging groups-ATA/ATG (+) and ATA/ATG (-) were compared, including anthropometric data, HbA1C, plasma lipids, TSH, fT4. Positive antibodies titre was found in 27 (12.16%) of the children. Apart from older age in the antibody positive group (11.67 vs. 9.67 years, p < 0.05), there were no significant differences among these groups regarding other clinical and laboratory characteristics. Concluding, the presence of thyroid autoantibodies in 12.16% of subjects with newly diagnosed diabetes confirms the necessity of screening of all children, especially adolescents from the time of diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 1 onwards. No association between existence of autoantibodies and the clinical status of a child at the presentation of diabetes was demonstrated by this study.
