Cloning and nucleotide sequence of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa glucose-selective OprB porin gene and distribution of OprB within the family Pseudomonadaceae

Genome-Wide Analysis of Sugar Transporters Identifies the gtsA Gene for Glucose Transportation in Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501

Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501 possesses an extraordinary number of transporters which confer this rhizosphere bacterium with the sophisticated ability to metabolize various carbon sources. However, sugars are not a preferred carbon source for P. stutzeri A1501. The P. stutzeri A1501 genome has been sequenced, allowing for the homology-based in silico identification of genes potentially encoding sugar-transport systems by using established microbial sugar transporters as a template sequence. Genomic analysis revealed that there were 10 sugar transporters in P. stutzeri A1501, most of which belong to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family (5/10); the others belong to the phosphotransferase system (PTS), major intrinsic protein (MIP) family, major facilitator superfamily (MFS) and the sodium solute superfamily (SSS). These systems might serve for the import of glucose, galactose, fructose and other types of sugar. Growth analysis showed that the only effective medium was glucose and its corresponding metabolic system was relatively complete. Notably, the loci of glucose metabolism regulatory systems HexR, GltR/GtrS, and GntR were adjacent to the transporters ABC^MalEFGK, ABC^GtsABCD, and ABC^MtlEFGK, respectively. Only the ABC^GtsABCD expression was significantly upregulated under both glucose-sufficient and -limited conditions. The predicted structure and mutant phenotype data of the key protein GtsA provided biochemical evidence that P. stutzeri A1501 predominantly utilized the ABC^GtsABCD transporter for glucose uptake. We speculate that gene absence and gene diversity in P. stutzeri A1501 was caused by sugar-deficient environmental factors and hope that this report can provide guidance for further analysis of similar bacterial lifestyles.

Structure, function and regulation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa porins

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the γ-proteobacteria. Like other members of the Pseudomonas genus, it is known for its metabolic versatility and its ability to colonize a wide range of ecological niches, such as rhizosphere, water environments and animal hosts, including humans where it can cause severe infections. Another particularity of P. aeruginosa is its high intrinsic resistance to antiseptics and antibiotics, which is partly due to its low outer membrane permeability. In contrast to Enterobacteria, pseudomonads do not possess general diffusion porins in their outer membrane, but rather express specific channel proteins for the uptake of different nutrients. The major outer membrane 'porin', OprF, has been extensively investigated, and displays structural, adhesion and signaling functions while its role in the diffusion of nutrients is still under discussion. Other porins include OprB and OprB2 for the diffusion of glucose, the two small outer membrane proteins OprG and OprH, and the two porins involved in phosphate/pyrophosphate uptake, OprP and OprO. The remaining nineteen porins belong to the so-called OprD (Occ) family, which is further split into two subfamilies termed OccD (8 members) and OccK (11 members). In the past years, a large amount of information concerning the structure, function and regulation of these porins has been published, justifying why an updated review is timely.

iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis of the global response to 17β-estradiol in estrogen-degradation strain Pseudomonas putida SJTE-1

Microorganism degradation is efficient to remove the steroid hormones like 17β-estradiol (E2); but their degradation mechanism and metabolic network to these chemicals are still not very clear. Here the global responses of the estrogen-degradation strain Pseudomonas putida SJTE-1 to 17β-estradiol and glucose were analyzed and compared using the iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantization) strategy combined with LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry). 78 proteins were identified with significant changes in expression; 45 proteins and 33 proteins were up-regulated and down-regulated, respectively. These proteins were mainly involved in the processes of stress response, energy metabolism, transportation, chemotaxis and cell motility, and carbon metabolism, considered probably responding to 17β-estradiol and playing a role in its metabolism. The up-regulated proteins in electron transfer, energy generation and transport systems were thought crucial for efficient uptake, translocation and transformation of 17β-estradiol. The over-expression of carbon metabolism proteins indicated cells may activate related pathway members to utilize 17β-estradiol. Meanwhile, proteins functioning in glucose capture and metabolism were mostly down-regulated. These findings provide important clues to reveal the 17β-estradiol degradation mechanism in P. putida and promote its bioremediation applications.

The fitness costs and trade-off shapes associated with the exclusion of nine antibiotics by OmpF porin channels

The trade-off relationship between antibiotic exclusion and nutrient access across the Gram-negative outer membrane is determined by structural constraints in porin channels. The precise nutritional cost of exclusion is unknown for different antibiotics, as are the shapes of the nutrition-susceptibility trade-off. Using a library of 10 engineered isogenic Escherichia coli strains with structural modifications of OmpF porin expressed at a constant level, susceptibilities were measured for nine antibiotics and the nutritional fitness costs estimated by competitions in chemostats. Different antibiotics exhibited a remarkably varied range of geometries in the nutrition-susceptibility trade-off, including convex, concave and sigmoidal trade-off shapes. The trade-off patterns predict the possibility of adaptations in contributing to antibiotic resistance; exclusion of amoxicillin or trimethoprim in ompF mutants can occur with little loss of fitness whereas kanamycin and streptomycin exclusion has a high cost. Some individual OmpF changes even allow positive correlations (trade-ups), resulting in increased fitness and decreased susceptibility specifically to cephalexin or ciprofloxacin. The surprising plasticity of the nutrition-exclusion relationship means that there are no generalisable rules that apply to decreasing susceptibility for all antibiotics. The protein changes are exquisitely specific in determining nutritional fitness and adaptive outcomes in a structural constraint trade-off.

How Porin Heterogeneity and Trade-Offs Affect the Antibiotic Susceptibility of Gram-Negative Bacteria

Variations in porin proteins are common in Gram-negative pathogens. Altered or absent porins reduce access of polar antibiotics across the outer membrane and can thus contribute to antibiotic resistance. Reduced permeability has a cost however, in lowering access to nutrients. This trade-off between permeability and nutritional competence is the source of considerable natural variation in porin gate-keeping. Mutational changes in this trade-off are frequently selected, so susceptibility to detergents and antibiotics is polymorphic in environmental isolates as well as pathogens. Understanding the mechanism, costs and heterogeneity of antibiotic exclusion by porins will be crucial in combating Gram negative infections.

A proteomic approach of SigX function in Pseudomonas aeruginosa outer membrane composition

SigX is one of the 19 extracytoplasmic function sigma factors that have been predicted in the human opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa genome. SigX is involved in the transcription of oprF, encoding the major outer membrane protein OprF, a pleiotropic porin that contributes to the maintaining of the wall structure, and is essential to P. aeruginosa virulence. This study aimed to get further insights into the functions of SigX. We performed here an outer membrane subproteome of a sigX mutant. Proteomic investigations revealed lower production of 8 porins among which 4 gated channels involved in iron or hem uptake, OprF, and the three substrate-specific proteins OprD, OprQ and OprE. On the other side, the glucose-specific porin OprB and the lipid A 3-O-deacylase that is involved in LPS modification were up-regulated. Our results indicate that SigX may be involved in the control and/or regulation of the outer membrane composition.

BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

A proteomic approach was used herein to get further insights into SigX functions in P. aeruginosa. The data presented here suggest that SigX is involved in the outer membrane protein composition, and could be linked to a regulatory network involved in OM homeostasis.

Molecular uptake of chitooligosaccharides through chitoporin from the marine bacterium Vibrio harveyi

BACKGROUND

Chitin is the most abundant biopolymer in marine ecosystems. However, there is no accumulation of chitin in the ocean-floor sediments, since marine bacteria Vibrios are mainly responsible for a rapid turnover of chitin biomaterials. The catabolic pathway of chitin by Vibrios is a multi-step process that involves chitin attachment and degradation, followed by chitooligosaccharide uptake across the bacterial membranes, and catabolism of the transport products to fructose-6-phosphate, acetate and NH(3).

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

This study reports the isolation of the gene corresponding to an outer membrane chitoporin from the genome of Vibrio harveyi. This porin, expressed in E. coli, (so called VhChiP) was found to be a SDS-resistant, heat-sensitive trimer. Immunoblotting using anti-ChiP polyclonal antibody confirmed the expression of the recombinant ChiP, as well as endogenous expression of the native protein in the V. harveyi cells. The specific function of VhChiP was investigated using planar lipid membrane reconstitution technique. VhChiP nicely inserted into artificial membranes and formed stable, trimeric channels with average single conductance of 1.8±0.13 nS. Single channel recordings at microsecond-time resolution resolved translocation of chitooligosaccharides, with the greatest rate being observed for chitohexaose. Liposome swelling assays showed no permeation of other oligosaccharides, including maltose, sucrose, maltopentaose, maltohexaose and raffinose, indicating that VhChiP is a highly-specific channel for chitooligosaccharides.

CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE

We provide the first evidence that chitoporin from V. harveyi is a chitooligosaccharide specific channel. The results obtained from this study help to establish the fundamental role of VhChiP in the chitin catabolic cascade as the molecular gateway that Vibrios employ for chitooligosaccharide uptake for energy production.

A novel host-responsive sensor mediates virulence and type III secretion during Pseudomonas aeruginosa-host cell interactions

Sensitive sensory mechanisms are instrumental in affording Pseudomonas aeruginosa the capacity to establish diverse yet severe human infections, which can manifest themselves in long-term untreatable disease. The ability of P. aeruginosa to tightly regulate gene expression and virulence factor production, in response to activation of these sensory components, enables the pathogen to sustain infection despite the host immune response and aggressive antibiotic treatment. Although a number of factors are recognized as playing a role in early infection, very little is known regarding the sensors involved in this process. In this study, we identified P. aeruginosa PA3191 as a novel host-responsive sensor that plays a key role during P. aeruginosa-host interactions and is required for optimum colonization and dissemination in a mouse model of infection. We demonstrated that PA3191 contributed to modulation of the type III secretion system (T3SS) in response to host cells and T3SS-inducing conditions in vitro. PA3191 (designated GtrS) acted in concert with the response regulator GltR to regulate the OprB transport system and subsequently carbon metabolism. Through this signal transduction pathway, T3SS activation was mediated via the RsmAYZ regulatory cascade and involved the global anaerobic response regulator Anr.

Functional characterization of pfm in protein secretion and lung infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients cause progressive airway obstruction and tissue damage, which is the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with CF. This paper describes the functional characterization of the pfm gene (open reading frame PA2950) of P. aeruginosa. Using DNA microarrays, we found that the transcriptional levels of type II secretory system genes were significantly reduced in the pfm mutant strain. The type-II-dependent exoprotein LasB could not be secreted normally. The pfm gene was identified as a gene involved in bacterial protein secretion that was critical for the extracellular release of elastase in P. aeruginosa. The abilities to induce lung injury by wild-type and pfm mutant P. aeruginosa were evaluated in a murine acute lung infection model. The results showed that the pathogenicity and virulence of the pfm mutant strain was significantly reduced compared with that of the wild-type strain. The pfm gene and its expression product, as potential new drug targets against P. aeruginosa infection, have important research significance.

Repression of the glucose-inducible outer-membrane protein OprB during utilization of aromatic compounds and organic acids in Pseudomonas putida CSV86

Pseudomonas putida CSV86 shows preferential utilization of aromatic compounds over glucose. Protein analysis and [¹⁴C]glucose-binding studies of the outer membrane fraction of cells grown on different carbon sources revealed a 40 kDa protein that was transcriptionally induced by glucose and repressed by aromatics and succinate. Based on 2D gel electrophoresis and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, the 40 kDa protein closely resembled the porin B of P. putida KT2440 and carbohydrate-selective porin OprB of various Pseudomonas strains. The purified native protein (i) was estimated to be a homotrimer of 125 kDa with a subunit molecular mass of 40 kDa, (ii) displayed heat modifiability of electrophoretic mobility, (iii) showed channel conductance of 166 pS in 1 M KCl, (iv) permeated various sugars (mono-, di- and tri-saccharides), organic acids, amino acids and aromatic compounds, and (v) harboured a glucose-specific and saturable binding site with a dissociation constant of 1.3 µM. These results identify the glucose-inducible outer-membrane protein of P. putida CSV86 as a carbohydrate-selective protein OprB. Besides modulation of intracellular glucose-metabolizing enzymes and specific glucose-binding periplasmic space protein, the repression of OprB by aromatics and organic acids, even in the presence of glucose, also contributes significantly to the strain's ability to utilize aromatics and organic acids over glucose.

Multivariate analysis of microarray data by principal component discriminant analysis: prioritizing relevant transcripts linked to the degradation of different carbohydrates in Pseudomonas putida S12

The value of the multivariate data analysis tools principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component discriminant analysis (PCDA) for prioritizing leads generated by microarrays was evaluated. To this end, Pseudomonas putida S12 was grown in independent triplicate fermentations on four different carbon sources, i.e. fructose, glucose, gluconate and succinate. RNA isolated from these samples was analysed in duplicate on an anonymous clone-based array to avoid bias during data analysis. The relevant transcripts were identified by analysing the loadings of the principal components (PC) and discriminants (D) in PCA and PCDA, respectively. Even more specifically, the relevant transcripts for a specific phenotype could also be ranked from the loadings under an angle (biplot) obtained after PCDA analysis. The leads identified in this way were compared with those identified using the commonly applied fold-difference and hierarchical clustering approaches. The different data analysis methods gave different results. The methods used were complementary and together resulted in a comprehensive picture of the processes important for the different carbon sources studied. For the more subtle, regulatory processes in a cell, the PCDA approach seemed to be the most effective. Except for glucose and gluconate dehydrogenase, all genes involved in the degradation of glucose, gluconate and fructose were identified. Moreover, the transcriptomics approach resulted in potential new insights into the physiology of the degradation of these carbon sources. Indications of iron limitation were observed with cells grown on glucose, gluconate or succinate but not with fructose-grown cells. Moreover, several cytochrome- or quinone-associated genes seemed to be specifically up- or downregulated, indicating that the composition of the electron-transport chain in P. putida S12 might change significantly in fructose-grown cells compared to glucose-, gluconate- or succinate-grown cells.

Identification and characterization of the gltK gene encoding a membrane-associated glucose transport protein of pseudomonas aeruginosa

The Pseudomonas aeruginosa oprB gene encodes the carbohydrate-selective OprB porin, which translocates substrate molecules across the outer membrane to the periplasmic glucose-binding protein. We identified and cloned two open reading frames (ORFs) flanking the oprB gene but are not in operonic arrangement with the oprB gene. The downstream ORF encodes a putative polypeptide homologous to members of a family of transcriptional repressors, whereas the oprB gene is preceded by an ORF encoding a putative product, which exhibits strong homology to several carbohydrate transport ATP-binding cassette (ABC) proteins. The genomic copy of the upstream ORF was mutagenized by homologous recombination. Analysis of the deletion mutant in comparison with the wild type revealed a significant reduction in [14C] glucose transport activity in the mutant strain, suggesting that this ORF likely encodes the inner membrane component of the glucose ABC transporter. It is thus designated gltK gene to reflect its homology to the Pseudomona fluorescens mtlK and its involvement in the high-affinity glucose transport system. Multiple alignment analysis revealed that the P. aeruginosa gltK gene product is a member of the MalK subfamily of ABC proteins.

[Interactions of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa outer membrane proteins with plasma fibronectins. Bacterial adhesin investigation]

Pseudomonas aeruginosa adherence is a complex phenomenon largely mediated by pili involving specific receptor-ligand interactions. Anti-fibronectin antibodies as well as plasmatic fibronectin are able to inhibit P. aeruginosa adherence onto A549 cells showing that matricial fibronectin is an actual receptor for this bacterium. Experiments performed in vitro with human plasmatic fibronectin used as receptor and outer membrane proteins of P. aeruginosa as ligands show the presence of four fibronectin-binding proteins. These proteins with molecular mass of 70 +/- 2, 60 +/- 2, 48 +/- 2 and 36 +/- 1 kDa should be adhesins of P. aeruginosa on epithelial cell matrix in a non-pilus mediated adherence.

Multiple environmental factors regulate the expression of the carbohydrate-selective OprB porin of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

In response to low extracellular glucose concentration, Pseudomonas aeruginosa induces the expression of the outer membrane carbohydrate-selective OprB porin. The promoter region of the oprB gene was cloned into a lacZ transcriptional fusion vector, and the construct was mobilized into P. aeruginosa OprB-deficient strain, WW100, to evaluate additional environmental factors that influence OprB porin gene expression. Growth temperature, pH of the growth medium, salicylate concentration, and carbohydrate source were found to differentially influence porin expression. This expression pattern was compared to those of whole-cell [14C]glucose uptake under conditions of high osmolarity, ionicity, variable pH, growth temperatures, and carbohydrate source. These studies revealed that the high-affinity glucose transport genes are down-regulated by salicylic acid, differentially regulated by pH and temperature, and are specifically responsive to exogenous glucose induction.Key words: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, OprB porin, glucose transport, regulation.

Effect of nutrient limitation on adhesion characteristics of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes a variety of diseases in humans including lung and ocular infections. Infections of the cornea are usually associated with wearing contact lenses and can result in loss of vision. This study aimed to determine the effect of carbon or nitrogen limitation on the adhesion to contact lenses of a strain of Ps. aeruginosa isolated from contact lens-related corneal inflammation. Cells were grown in a continuous culture apparatus in varying levels of glucose or ammonia to effect nutrient limitation. Adhesion to contact lenses was measured as total counts and viable counts. The cell surface hydrophobicity and charge were measured using adhesion to surface-modified Sepharose. Changes in lipopolysaccharide were determined using 1D SDS-PAGE and changes in cell-surface proteins were measured using 2D gel electrophoresis. The more the cultures were nitrogen limited, the greater the increase in adhesion to unworn hydrogel contact lenses 0.3 x 10(3) - 2.2 x 10(3) cells/mm2 on Etafilon A lenses. Cells that were carbon limited showed a greater increase in adhesion to contact lenses when the lenses had been coated in artificial tears. It appeared that lipopolysaccharide may have been involved in the constitutive adhesion to unworn lenses that occurred during C-limitation, whereas changes in the outer membrane proteins contributed to the increased adhesion under nitrogen limitation, or the change in adhesion that occurred to carbon-limited cells using contact lenses coated in artificial tears. Nine cell-surface proteins appeared during nitrogen limitation with kDa/pI of 75/4.8, 4.9, 5.0; 62/5.6; 89/6.5; 38/6.4; 28/1.5; 18/6.4; 12/4.5. Any or all of these may have been involved in the increased adhesion and further experiments are underway to examine this possibility.

Are bacterial proteins part of the matrix of kidney stones?

An extracellular protein, produced from Pseudomonas fluorescens strain D with molecular mass of 41.5 kDa was partially purified. Its first 12 amino acid sequence shows strong similarity to a sequence reported to belong to a protein isolated from a urate-calcium oxalate stone (Binnette & Binnette, Scan Microsc1994; 2: 233-239). A possible involvement of bacterial proteins in stone matrix is discussed.

Channel specificity and secondary structure of the glucose-inducible porins of Pseudomonas spp

The OprB porin-mediated glucose transport system was investigated in Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Burkholderia cepacia, and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Kinetic studies of [U-14C]glucose uptake revealed an inducible system of low Km values (0.3-5 microM) and high specificity for glucose. OprB homologs were purified and reconstituted into proteoliposomes. The porin function and channel preference for glucose were demonstrated by liposome swelling assays. Examination of the periplasmic glucose-binding protein (GBP) components by Western immunoblotting using P. aeruginosa GBP-specific antiserum revealed some homology between P. aeruginosa GBP and periplasmic proteins from P. fluorescens and P. chlororaphis but not B. cepacia. Circular dichroism spectropolarimetry of purified OprB-like porins from the three species revealed beta sheet contents of 31-50% in agreement with 40% beta sheet content for the P. aeruginosa OprB porin. These findings suggest that the high-affinity glucose transport system is primarily specific for glucose and well conserved in the genus Pseudomonas although its outer membrane component may differ in channel architecture and specificity for other carbohydrates.

Bacterial genetic loci implicated in the Pseudomonas putida GR12-2R3--canola mutualism: identification of an exudate-inducible sugar transporter

Pseudomonas putida GR12-2R3 promotes the emergence and growth of diverse plant species. Analyses of TnphoA insertion mutations are revealing bacterial characteristics pertinent to the plant-microbe interaction. Pseudomonas putida PG269 is a TnphoA insertion derivative of GR12-2R3 that expresses canola seed exudate-inducible alkaline phosphatase (PhoA) activity. It promoted the growth of canola roots, as well as strain GR12-2R3, and outgrew its parent when they were cocultured in the presence of canola roots or in liquid seed exudate medium. (In contrast, mutant PG126 failed to promote canola root growth and was outgrown by its parent strain.) The PhoA activity of strain PG269 was induced by glucosamine and other sugars; glucosamine inhibited the growth of strain GR12-2R3 and stimulated the growth of strain PG269. Strain PG269 contained two TnphoA insertions: seiA1::TnphoA and seiB1::TnphoA. Strain PG312, which contained only insertion seiA1::TnphoA, shared all aspects of the PG269 phenotype, except the ability to outcompete strain GR12-2R3 during coculture. Insertion seiA1::TnphoA interrupted an open reading frame related in sequence to members of the MalF family of sugar transporter subunits. The PhoA-inducing fraction of canola seed exudate was hydrophilic, low in molecular weight, and heat stable. It cochromatographed with basic amino acids and amino sugars, and was inactivated by strains GR12-2R3 and PG269. Gene seiA may encode a subunit of an ABC transporter with broad specificity for glucose and related sugars whose expression can be induced by exudate sugars.

Molecular characterization of the Serratia marcescens OmpF porin, and analysis of S. marcescens OmpF and OmpC osmoregulation

Serratia marcescens is a nosocomial pathogen with a high incidence of beta-lactam resistance. Reduced amounts of outer-membrane porins have been correlated with increased resistance to beta-lactams but only one porin, OmpC, has been characterized at the molecular level. In this study we present the molecular characterization of a second porin, OmpF, and an analysis of the expression of S. marcescens porins in response to various environmental changes. Two porins were isolated from the outer membrane using urea-SDS-PAGE and the relative amounts were shown to be influenced by the osmolarity of the medium and the presence of salicylate. From a S. marcescens genomic DNA library an 8 kb EcoRI fragment was isolated that hybridized with an oligonucleotide encoding the published N-terminal amino acid sequence of the S. marcescens 41 kDa porin. A 41 kDa protein was detected in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli NM522 carrying the cloned S. marcescens DNA. The cloned gene was sequenced and shown to code for a protein that shared 60-70% identity with other known OmpF and OmpC sequences. The upstream DNA sequence of the S. marcescens gene was similar to the corresponding E. coli ompF sequence; however, a regulatory element important in repression of E. coli ompF at high osmolarity was absent. The cloned S. marcescens OmpF in E. coli increased in expression in conditions of high osmolarity. The potential involvement of micF in the observed osmoregulation of S. marcescens porins is discussed.

A two-component response regulator, gltR, is required for glucose transport activity in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1

A 729-bp open reading frame (gltR) was identified in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 that encodes a product homologous to the two-component response regulator family of proteins. Disruption of gltR caused loss of glucose transport activity. Restoration of gltR resulted in wild-type levels of glucose transport. These findings indicate that gltR is required for expression of the glucose transport system in P. aeruginosa.

The OprB porin plays a central role in carbohydrate uptake in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Using interposon mutagenesis, we have generated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which lack or overexpress the substrate-selective OprB porin of this species. A marked decrease or increase in the initial uptake of glucose by these strains verified the role of OprB in facilitating the diffusion of glucose across the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa. However, we also demonstrated that the loss or overexpression of OprB had a similar effect on the uptake of three other sugars able to support the growth of this bacterium (mannitol, glycerol, and fructose). This effect was restricted to carbohydrate transport; arginine uptake was identical in mutant and wild-type strains. These results indicated that OprB cannot be considered strictly a glucose-selective porin; rather, it acts as a central component of carbohydrate transport and is more accurately described as a carbohydrate-selective porin.
