Abstract
When exposed to light, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) become photoactivated and create electron/hole pairs as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS). We examined the ROS production and degradation of a widely used azo dye, FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine), triggered by photoactivated TiO2 NPs. Degradation was found to follow pseudo-first order reaction kinetics where the rate constant increased with TiO2 NP concentration. Depositing Au on the surface of TiO2 largely enhanced electron transfer and ROS generation, which consequently accelerated dye degradation. Alkaline conditions promoted ROS generation and dye degradation. Results from electron spin resonance spin-trap spectroscopy suggested that at pH 7.4, both hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen ((1)O2) were responsible for dye discoloration, whereas at pH 5, the consumption of (1)O2 became dominant. Implications for dye degradation in foods and other consumer products that contain both TiO2 and FD&C Yellow No. 5 as ingredients are discussed.

Abstract
Absorption and fluorescence spectra of three anthraquinone dyes with various substituents and molecular size were studied in different solvents. The photo-physical behavior of a dissolved dye depends strongly on the solvent-solute interactions and solvent nature. The solvatochromic method was used to investigate dipole moments of these dyes in ground and excited states. The spectral variations were analyzed by means of linear solvation energy relationships concept proposed by Kamlet and Taft. The results conceive the nature and extend of, specific and non-specific, solvent-solute interactions.

Abstract
Photophysical properties of 2,6-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone (2,6-DAAQ) dye have been investigated in different solvents and solvent mixtures. The fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, radiative rate constants, nonradiative rate constants and absorption and fluorescence spectral characteristics show unusual deviations in the lower polarity aprotic solvents in comparison to those in other aprotic solvents of medium to higher polarities. The results indicate that the dye exists in different structural forms in the lower and in the medium to higher polarity solvents. Drawing an analogy with the results reported for other amino-substituted dyes, it is inferred that 2,6-DAAQ dye adopts a planar intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) structure in medium to higher polarity solvents, where the amino lone pairs are in good resonance with the anthraquinone pi-cloud. In the lower polarity solvents, however, the dye is inferred to exist in a nonplanar structure where the amino lone pairs are not in good resonance with the anthraquinone pi-cloud. Due to these structural differences, the dye displays significantly different photophysical behavior in the lower polarity solvents than in the other solvents of medium to higher polarities. Supportive evidence for the above structural changes has been obtained from ab initio quantum chemical calculations on the structures of the dye under different conditions. Unusual deviations in the photophysical properties of 2,6-DAAQ dye in protic solvents in comparison to those in aprotic solvents of similar polarities are attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding effect involving the OH groups of the protic solvents and the quinonoid oxygens of the dye.

Abstract
Because of promising clinical results obtained with photodynamic therapy, more and more photosensitizers continue to be isolated (from natural sources), synthesized and evaluated, the development of which is considered to be a key factor for the successful clinical application of photodynamic therapy. Porphyrins and their analogs (as classical types of phototherapeutic agents) have been extensively reviewed. In this review, we have attempted to summarize the phototherapeutic potential (in particular, anticancer and antiviral aspects) of nonporphyrin photosensitizers (as a new generation of phototherapeutic agents) in more detail, which have been relatively much less reviewed hitherto. They include anthraquinones, anthrapyrazoles, perylenequinones, xanthenes, cyanines, acridines, phenoxazines and phenothiazines. They have shown certain phototherapeutic advantages over the presently used porphyrins. Some anthraquinones, perylenequinones, cyanines, phenoxazines and phenothiazines exhibit strong light absorption in the 'phototherapeutic window' (600-1000 nm), high photosensitizing efficacy and low delayed skin photosensitivity. Some of the nonporphyrin photosensitizers (such as rhodamine 123, merocyanine 540 and some cyanine cationic dyes) demonstrate higher selectivity for tumor cells. They can also be explored in connection with selective carcinoma photolysis strategy based on mitochondrion-, lysosome- or DNA-directed localization mode.
