Abstract
Previous research suggests that heavy metals may be associated with increased susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori infection. This study investigated the effect of heavy metal exposure (Pb and Cd) on tooth loss and H. pylori infection in a Chinese rural population, who live near a mining and smelting area. Blood samples were collected from the study participants to estimate the lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) exposure levels. H. pylori infection was analyzed using the 14C-urea breath test, and the number of missing teeth (MT), filled teeth (FT), and missing or filled teeth (MFT) were counted by conducting a physical examination. Regression analysis was used to assess the difference between H. pylori-positive and -negative individuals in the MT, FT, and MFT groups, adjusting for confounders. The H. pylori infection prevalence was higher in individuals in the high Cd or high Pb groups than that in the low Cd or low Pb groups (p < 0.05). In addition, greater numbers of FT and MFT were observed in individuals in the high Pb group than those in the low Pb group (p < 0.05). We further found 8.7% (95% CI, 2.8−23.8%, p = 0.017) of the effect of the high BPb level on H. pylori infection risk could be statistically explained by FT using amediation analyses in adjusted models, and 6.8% (95% CI, 1.6−24.8%, p = 0.066) by MFT. Furthermore, FT and MFT were significantly associated with increased risk for H. pylori infection (odds ratio (OR) = 4.938, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.125−21.671; OR = 3.602, 95% CI: 1.218−10.648, respectively). Pb and Cd exposure may be associated with tooth loss and increased susceptibility to H. pylori infection, and tooth loss may be an independent risk factor for H. pylori infection.

Abstract
The multidisciplinary nature and long duration of birth cohort studies allow investigation of the relationship between general and oral health and indicate the most appropriate stages in life to intervene. To date, the worldwide distribution of oral health-related birth cohort studies (OHRBCSs) has not been mapped, and a synthesis of information on methodological characteristics and outcomes is not available. We mapped published literature on OHRBCSs, describing their oral health-related data and methodological aspects. A 3-step search strategy was adopted to identify published studies using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and OVID databases. Studies with baseline data collection during pregnancy or within the first year of life or linked future oral health data to exposures during either of these 2 life stages were included. Studies examining only mothers' oral health and specific populations were excluded. In total, 1,721 articles were suitable for initial screening of titles and abstracts, and 528 articles were included in the review, identifying 120 unique OHRBCSs from 34 countries in all continents. The review comprised literature from the mid-1940s to the 21st century. Fifty-four percent of the OHRBCSs started from 2000 onward, and 75% of the cohorts were from high-income and only 2 from low-income countries. The participation rate between the baseline and the last oral health follow-up varied between 7% and 93%. Ten cohorts that included interventions were mostly from 2000 and with fewer than 1,000 participants. Seven data-linkage cohorts focused mostly on upstream characteristics and biological aspects. The most frequent clinical assessment was dental caries, widely presented as decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT/dmft). Periodontal conditions were primarily applied as isolated outcomes or as part of a classification system. Socioeconomic classification, ethnicity, and country- or language-specific assessment tools varied across countries. Harmonizing definitions will allow combining data from different studies, adding considerable strength to data analyses; this will be facilitated by forming a global consortium.

Abstract
AIM Evidence for reducing Helicobacter (H.) pylori by periodontal therapy comes from small studies in China, limiting generalizability. To estimate the association between periodontal disease and anti-H. pylori IgG titer levels in a European country, we used population-based data from the Study of Health in Pomerania. MATERIALS AND METHODS For pocket depth as the primary exposure, we restricted the age range to participants younger than 60 years (n = 2,481) to avoid selection bias due to edentulism in this cross-sectional study. For the full age range up to 81 years, we chose the number of missing teeth (n = 3,705). RESULTS The association between pocket depth and the outcome was weak. Given the ceiling effect for the number of missing teeth (ordinal logistic regression; odds ratio of the interquartile range effect = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.3-1.9; p-value for linearity = 0.005), we checked whether wearing removable dental prosthesis was associated with higher anti-H. pylori IgG titer levels (odds ratio = 1.3; 95% CI: 1.1-1.5). CONCLUSIONS Tooth loss and wearing removable dental prosthesis were weakly to moderately associated with higher anti-H. pylori IgG titer levels in the general population of a European country.

Abstract
PURPOSE The authors recently reported high Helicobacter pylori sero-prevalence among African-Americans of high African ancestry. We sought to determine whether neighborhood-level socio-economic characteristics are associated with H. pylori prevalence and whether this helps explain the link between African ancestry and H. pylori. METHODS Antibodies to H. pylori proteins were assessed in the serum of 336 African-American and 329 white Southern Community Cohort Study participants. Prevalence odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for CagA+ and CagA- H. pylori were calculated using polytomous logistic regression in relation to 10 Census block group-level measures of socio-economic status. RESULTS After adjusting for individual-level characteristics, three neighborhood-level factors were significantly inversely related to CagA+ H. pylori: percent completed high school; median house values; and percent employed (comparing highest to lowest tertile, OR, 0.47, 95 % CI, 0.26-0.85; OR, 0.56, 95 % CI, 0.32-0.99; and OR, 0.59, 95 % CI, 0.34-1.03, respectively). However, accounting for these measures did not attenuate the association between African ancestry and CagA+ H. pylori, with African-Americans of low, medium, and high African ancestry maintaining two-, seven-, and ninefold increased odds, respectively, compared to whites. CONCLUSIONS Neighborhood-level measures of education, employment, and house values are associated with CagA+ H. pylori sero-prevalence, but do not explain the persistent strong relationship between African ancestry level and CagA+ H. pylori. The findings suggest that neighborhood socio-economic status can help to highlight high-risk areas for prevention and screening efforts and that the link between African ancestry and H. pylori may have a biological basis.

Abstract
This review summarizes epidemiologic studies published between April 2004 and March 2005. DNA of Helicobacter pylori was detected in river water, but the culture was unsuccessful. H. pylori infection was associated with Shigella infection. Despite many studies, predominant infection routes of H. pylori have not yet been clearly identified. In some limited populations in developing countries, H. pylori infection was rare or with strange distributions. Trials to reduce the H. pylori infection rate were performed including H. pylori eradication in total family units and fly control. The hypothesis of a causal role of Helicobacter species and H. pylori infection in cancer of the hepatobiliary tract was indeed confirmed.

Abstract
The involvement of Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenesis of extragastric diseases continues to be an interesting topic in the field of Helicobacter-related pathology. Although conflicting findings have been reported for most of the disorders, a role of H. pylori seems to be important especially for the development of cardiovascular and hematologic disorders. Previously isolated human and animal Helicobacter sp. flexispira and "Helicobacter heilmannii" strains have been validated using polyphasic taxonomy. A novel enterohepatic Helicobacter has been isolated from mastomys and mice, adding to the list of helicobacters that colonize the liver. Genetic targets that may aid the classification of novel Helicobacter species have emerged. Animal models of Helicobacter-induced gastric and hepatobiliary diseases have offered insights to the mechanisms associated with premalignant transformation.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the effects of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) adhesin conservatory region vaccine in the prevention and treatment of H. pylori infection in a mouse model.
METHODS: The study was divided into two parts. In the first part, the specific germ free C57BL/6 mice were orally immunized with vaccine (100 mg) plus cholera toxin (CT) (2 mg), vaccine (100 mg), CT(2 mg), or PBS once a week for four weeks. Two weeks after the last immunization, all animals were challenged by live H. pylori, and were sacrificed 4 weeks after the challenge. In the second part, H. pylori infected mice were treated in the same way as in the first part. Four weeks after the last treatment, all animals were sacrificed, and the stomach biopsies were collected to detect H. pylori by the semi-quantitative bacterial culture assay.
RESULTS: The prophylactic rate from H. pylori infection was 61.5% (16/26) in the mice immunized with vaccine plus CT. The eradication rate of the vaccine plus CT group was 38.5% (10/26). No protective or therapeutic effect was observed in all other 3 groups. The H. pylori colony density in the vaccine plus CT group was significantly lower than those inother three groups in the second part of experiment (P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: The vaccine consisting of adhesin conservatory region and adjuvant is not only effective in the prevention, but also in the treatment of H. pylori infection.
